Fandom Eras in an Ongoing Canon

Something I've been thinking about recently, as I've been writing SxF fic for about one year, is the inherent uncertainty of writing for an ongoing canon as the characters evolve gradually with each new arc Endo creates.

For example, Twilight. We can joke about how the man is taking forever to acknowledge he loves his family, and the slow slow slow burn of Twiyor. But after 100+ chapters, he is indeed different from where he started. Chapter 1, he was willing to return a poor little kid to the orphanage like a defective toy when he realized she might not be a prodigy as he originally thought. He also left her at home alone and literally barricaded the door to keep her there.

Later, he acknowledges the trauma she must have faced as an orphan and becomes hyper-sensitive to little signs like how she arranges the sand table in his office (even if he reads her completely wrong).

By the time exams roll around, he avoids criticizing her for the Tonitrus bolt in math and gives her a genuine smile for her achievement in classical language, appreciating how she worked really hard.

With Yor, when he initially met her, he told himself he would figure out a way to trap her in the marriage if needed for the sake of the mission. Luckily he didn't have to do that, but the fact he remains that he was theoretically willing to. Then every ten to twenty chapters or so, Yor does something to surprise him with her kindness and strength and unconventional understanding of the world, and he grows to trust her and care for her wellbeing, to the point of taking a bullet for her and sparing Yuri.

In another 100 chapters, or by the end of the manga, whenever that will be, how much more will Twilight change?

As fan creators, how will our imagination of these characters change by then? Will we remember how we viewed season 1 Twilight? The fics we wrote and the characterizations we gave him? How about season 1 Yor, who had an obsession with knives and tended to imagine murder as the solution to any problem she couldn't solve immediately?

My main frame of reference is the ATLA fandom and how the characterization of Zuko and the flavor of Zutara fics changed over three seasons. Fics written during season 1 sometimes characterized him as a dark brooding villain with the trope of capturing or threatening Katara, mixed with uncomfortable power dynamics. Fics written during season 2 cast him as more vulnerable and uncertain, imagining how he might join Team Avatar, as we started to see him as the immature teenage dork he was all along. By season 3, immature teenage dork took over much of his fanfic persona as he finally joined the good guys in canon and added a fresh dynamic to the team. Fans wrote lots of friendship and redemption fics, diving into how he reconciled with Katara and won her over as a friend before pursuing her romantically.

I haven't participated in the ATLA fandom for a long time, but I imagine that few writers now will write fics based on season 1 Zuko, at least not with the fan-imagined version of him that was popular back then. Too much has changed about his canon character to make that palatable.

So, I wonder what it'll be like years from now when Twilight and Yor and other characters are notably different. What will it be like to look back on fanfics written in 2022-2025? Will we still enjoy them easily, or will we have to suspend disbelief as they'll feel like AUs with OOC characters?

Part of me feels sad about this, but I suppose this is always the risk of writing for an ongoing canon! At least I am not the only one risking so much of my own time on creating these stories out of love for these characters.

Why do you like jiang cheng?

At the risk of liking him for the wrong reasons, let me be verbose and annoying about it.

A short anecdote: I finished the donghua before the novel and I liked JC's aesthetic so I was happy to have that imagery in my head for the novel, but mostly I came out of the donghua like "cool story, the ending was frowny face though" and I came out of the novel like I was lost in the IKEA store "there's stuff here but it's not what I want and it's organized in a way that's hard to navigate through." Bit like giving me a puzzle to solve.

Anyway, imagine a cat bapping at a thing trying to get fandom to show me what to do with MDZS (i.e. reading fanfic) and then I come across anti-Jiang Cheng stuff.

I started then on Shuangjie reconciliation fic and quickly evolved into Jiang Cheng "Apologist" ((I actually don't think he has anything to apologize for even if he would do so anyway.))

I've been in the xianxia/wuxia sphere of media consumption for a year or so before trying out MDZS and JC just fits so well as the main character of his own story; destined for a position of power through birth, friends with someone in his life that causes conflict, seemingly betrayed by said friend when needing that friend the most, losing and losing and losing as his trust in said friend proves unfounded because the friend walks a path he can't follow, and then he's left with the tragedy that befell the world because--ultimately he trusted this friend too much.

It's a classic story of love and attachment and how good intentions can have massive consequences. Two men entwined by fate and in the end there's a battle on a hill (off screen in this case) where one is forced to "kill" the other.

MDZS could have ended with the past timeline, and I would have liked it more but at least in the present timeline we get Jiujiu and a-Ling.

Anyway: Excerpts and Commentary Below about WHY I LOVE JIANG CHENG, courtesy WANYIN

We stand by a badass mf in this house. The first thing we learn is that he gets credit for killing a big baddy and the second thing we learn is how fierce the rest of his reputation is. He brooks no shit and leaves no quarter. Amazing 💜

Well, I was done for at "gaze like two streaks of cold lightning" so RIP me, I guess. Reminds me of some antis that are like "you only like him because he's hot" which isn't true but it is a nice plus. He's described as inferior to LWJ so like, if it was only about hotness then wouldn't I like LWJ???

“I am his uncle. Do you have any last words?”

At the sound of that voice, every drop of blood in Wei Wuxian’s body seemed to surge to his head but then immediately drained away again. Thankfully, his face was already a mess of ghastly white, so it didn’t look strange when he went a little paler.

A man in purple attire strode over. He was dressed in a narrow-sleeved light robe, with his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. A silver bell dangled from his waist, yet there was no sound when he walked.

This young man had fine brows and almond eyes, with a chiseled handsomeness to his features. His eyes were deep and intense with a hint of aggression, his gaze like two streaks of cold lightning. He stopped and stood three meters away from Wei Wuxian. His expression was like that of a nocked arrow on a bow, ready to shoot, and even his composure was suffused with arrogant pride.

Jiang Cheng ruled the Jiang Clan of Yunmeng alone, so it could have been said that he was in a state of isolation.

🥺 Alone?? And he could still afford 400 Immortal Binding Nets? Self-sufficient king 🤩 And like, his reputation is so fierce and he's boiling over with anger in that scene, but still he restrains himself because he did the cost-benefit analysis! And then later he takes a huge risk on WWX, like he always does for WWX, and that doesn't work out for him--like it always does.

Seeing that nothing had happened to Jin Ling, Jiang Cheng was greatly relieved. However, that relief soon turned into a furious reprimand:

Parent behavior. Enough said.

He has a twisted smile when encountering a trigger for his PTSD and then he decides to fight it instead of letting it paralyze him. He's such a doer. Like, every other moment of the day he's carefully calculating pluses and minuses to every choice (valid) but when it comes to facing his personal demons he's ready to throw down. Excellent.

A moment later, Jiang Cheng’s lips pulled into a twisted smile. His left hand subconsciously began stroking that ring once more.

He said softly, “Excellent. Back, are you?”

He let go of his left hand, and a long whip dangled from it.

“Oh? Then please enlighten me, what is your type?”

Walking A-Spec flag very concerned about what the man who might be his shixiong thinks about him, more at eleven!

Wei Wuxian waved him off and then hooked his arm around Jiang Cheng’s shoulders. “Who cares? I’ll tease him a bit more before I go. You’ve already collected my corpse so many times. Once more won’t hurt.”

Okay but big lol that JC doesn't get to collect WWX's corpse that final time. //sounds of sobbing

A smile appeared on his face, but then he immediately humphed.

He's so grumpy and adorable! I love him! pre massacre JC is precious and I just want him to have someone to bring out that smile again.

He literally didn't have to do this. He makes all these excuses how he'll be embarrassed if WWX is rolling around 😂 Perfection. Boy, you are still carrying him and he doesn't want you to stop.

Jiang Cheng, walk slower, you’re gonna throw me off.”

Not only did Jiang Cheng want to throw Wei Wuxian off, but he practically wanted to bash his head into the ground to create a human crater. “So fussy even though I’m carrying you!”

“I didn’t tell you to carry me,” Wei Wuxian reasoned.

Jiang Cheng flew into a rage. “If I didn’t carry you, I think you’d hang out at their ancestral hall all day, rolling around on the floor. I can’t afford this embarrassment! Lan Wangji took fifty more strikes than you, but he walked away on his own, and you’re not embarrassed, pretending to be an invalid? I don’t want to carry you anymore. Get the hell off!”

“No, I’m wounded,” Wei Wuxian said.

Alrighty, like I'm just going through the entire book at this point.

Let me see if I can make this more concise:

Sacrifices himself despite his very dutiful nature that would oppose this. He throws away all his responsibilities for WWX, again and again, carrying on a tradition of favoring WWX over his own health and happiness. Citing: JFM favoring WWX to the detriment of his marriage, JYL dying to save WWX, and JC (exhausted and with little or no power) running into danger to save WWX ala distracting the Wen patrol and 2nd Siege.

Can't be honest in his affections and makes up excuses to do nice things for others.

Loves and understands his sister. She wanted JZX so he made it happen when LLJ had absolutely no reason to reinstate the marriage contract between Xuanli. JGS notes in the CR arc that he didn't want the marriage for his son in the first place and that there were better options than YMJ, and that was before the war! JC helped her get to Yiling to show off her wedding dress! Even though she married out he still felt so attached to her son he couldn't not co-parent Jin Ling.

Yes, he has Zidian, but he also has a second horsewhip that he keeps on him which is very exciting to know.

The narrative hates him but he survives. (He survives because the narrative hates him).

Most BAMF entrance in the novel at the temple scene with the busting the temple doors down and coming in from the rain with an umbrella. Like sure the narrative hates him but small blessings that rule of cool still counts for something.

Mama's boy.

Just some dude, shows up late to treasury room nonsense, knows all the gossip, no one has faith in him including himself, but he keeps going and doing what needs to be done even when he's so so tired and his shixiong shows up 3 months late with a ghoul lady and a latte, or disappears to liberate slave property without warning first and now he's called into a midnight meeting after trying to get some much needed rest and now he's got consequences to deal with. Someone help him!

An expert at sneering. Threats as a show of worry and care. This makes all the little and brief smiles so much more endearing.

Sandu Shengshou is an amazing title, get out of here if you don't agree. Holy Hand of the Three Poisons? Brutal, perfect 💜 It gets used like, ONCE. Crime against me personally.

But just as the Wei Wuxian of the past who’d extracted his golden core for Jiang Cheng had been unable to tell him the truth, the Jiang Cheng of the present could no longer bring himself to speak up.

I was wondering if you could go a little more into detail with Shaun's character please? Cuz I'm writing a fanfic AU of ur AU centered around him and I don't want it to be too off-character (cuz I most certainly can get carried away w my head canons lmao).

Ooo, let me think about this.

At his core Shaun is very much a protective older brother (even though he hatched out of their egg at the same time) who's entire world has evolved around Jacob. Ever since the Reaping of the Lambs and the deaths of their parents protecting Jacob became the sole driving force in Shaun's life. It was what kept him going through the darkest of days. As long as Jacob was alive he could keep going, keep fighting, and keep running.

Shaun is also bit of a brat. While he's super protective of Jacob everyone else is fair game. He likes teasing people who are far too serious as a way to cope with the horrors he's grown up with. He's also sarcastic sometimes, usually towards aforementioned serious people. He also likes to tell terrible jokes just to make Jacob smile during the worst of it. Almost all of his humor in this way is his own personal self-defense.

Shaun has found himself well educated completely by accident. He never meant to become a scholar, but having nothing to do but read Shamura's library for a hundred years in the afterlife has changed that. Combined with an excellent memory Shaun has become bit of a walking library himself when it comes to science, medicine, and history. He's also one of the few people outside of The Bishops that can actually read cursive.

Shaun does have some anger issues as a side effect of The Reaping. While he would never act on them himself (he has no real official training when it comes to battle) there's always a little voice within himself that wants to default to violence as the answer to all of his problems. Indeed the thought of just straight-up murdering the now-mortal bishops for revenge has come to him many times. But he would never pick up the blade himself out of anger. Now, if someone else was willing to do it...

At the same time Shaun has a good sense of justice. It's for that reason why he was so shocked to learn about what Jacob had done with the cult. To him society is all about protecting the innocent and punishing the guilty. So hearing about those same innocents being sacrificed for the sake of power was enough to push him over the edge. He would never pick up a weapon out of anger, yet he could probably talk himself into picking up one to protect those who need protecting.

And of course there's Shaun's greatest flaw: The fact that he got completely rizz'd up by Kallamar of all people. This confuses Kallamar most of all, really.

Reylo's indetroner equivalent to date.

I mean, Dongfang Qingcang = Kylo Ben to death. They both killed their father for essentially the same reason ! And Rey and Orchid are both in the same situation of not knowing who they are and no one knows who they are either. Girls without a home and family, and who would really want have that, who don't know who they are and think that basically they are nothing, and who are alone. There's also the color coding of the guy and the girl, the girl's powers generally linked to healing, not to mention the mystical connection of the two characters which essentially allows them to resurrect each other at the end. Then obviously, they are in enemy clans. He is from the tribe of the moon, and she, from that of the celestial. Then we discover that she is in fact the reincarnation of the former leader of another clan, which the Moon Tribe once decimated, so she is the equivalent of the goddess of nature. So in short, the heroine was nobody, but then discovers her true identity which further reinforces the supposed enemy aspect between the two characters. Like Rey when she discovers (unfortunately) that she is Palpatine's granddaughter. Without forgetting that the heroine's primordial form at the beginning is an orchid, that's her name, and you are well aware that an orchid is a plant that needs sunlight. Something said in the series itself, and where we see Dongfang Qingcang taking care of Orchid by making her be in contact with sunlight as much as possible. Not to mention that fairies are often symbolically associated with light in our culture. And even if Orchid is ultimately not a fairy, she thinks she is for the majority of the series and is designated as such by the title. Yes. No doubt. It's Reylo pure and simple.

We'll see how The Hurricane Wars trilogy evolves in the future...

Talasyn and Alaric's relationship is reminiscent of many other well-known fictional romantic relationships for me. (Just like Reylo, and of course, also like Dongfang Qingcang & Orchid, and they are all generally - so not all - the same)

There is Romeo & Juliet by the obvious appearance of the star-crossed lovers, from an enemy clan in the middle of war.

The obvious myth of Hades & Persephone. Because sometimes Persephone is called the Light of the Underworld and she is also sometimes depicted with a torch. So always associated with light. Hades is on the other hand associated with death and darkness. It is also often pointed out that they are a power couple.

Of course ; Beauty and the Beast. But in the sense that the trope is used today in the idea of ​​a man cathegorized as monstrous finally finding redemption / or evolved, through the romantic relationship he forms with a woman. (Let's be real, this is the direction we are heading)

The classics Jane Eyre & Mr Rochester ! The orphan heroine meeting a Byronic hero dressed in black. The emphasis of the relationship being on their spiritual / magical connection. (And probably later in the trilogy the emphasis for Talasyn & Alaric will be on their equality, like Jane & Rochester, I'd be hard-pressed, seeing as after all, it's taken from a Reylo fanfic and is about a trope of light / darkness, equality will inevitably come to the table at some point)

Erik & Christine from The Phantom of the Opera. The young orphaned woman associated to the light who finds herself in a complicated and tragic romantic relationship with a man having a traumatic past, and wearing a mask over his face. But who also offers to train the heroine and ends up doing so.

The other aspect of Reylo would be Darcy & Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice, but hey... as long as we don't get in the sequel the guy telling to the girl that she may be nothing according to her or for the others, but not for him like with Kylo (And Dongfang Qingcang from LBFAD) as equivalent to Darcy's failed declaration... well I can't really say. Hoping we will have it too !

I also hope that the connection between Talasyn & Alaric on a spiritual and magical level will strengthen even more, and also above all that the concept of equality will come to the table as their relationship evolves positively. (Which should normally be the case)

I just read a Sterek fic where Derek was already a True Alpha before the movie was even a thing that happened. I do not want to be accusatory, but do you have anymore instances of the writers taking ideas from fanfiction? Because there are so many stories where Derek stays an alpha even though the show tried to portray him as an incompetent one, and that seems to be the source of conflict among Scott Stans & Shippers who don't respect Scott. https://archiveofourown.org/works/28209924/chapters/69127125

i'm hesitant and wary to say they copied fanfic because that's really hard to prove and most creator's avoid it for legal reasons. however, given the history of teen wolf's interaction with and use of fandom i wouldn't be surprised if there was at minimum a cursory gander at what were the popular theories amongst fandom.

teen wolf still has an official tumblr after all.

off the top of my head stiles being possessed was a pretty hot idea amongst fandom back in 2012 because there was so much overlap between supernatural and teen wolf fans.

derek being a mechanic was pretty popular amongst au's but i'm sure jeff davis also saw the same photoshoot the rest of us did and probably had the same feelings about it.

derek remaining an alpha or becoming an alpha again is also super popular amongst fandom -- especially sterek fandom -- to this day.

personally, i think jeff always planned for derek to become an alpha again at some point but hoechlin left the show so derek's arc closed with him becoming an evolved werewolf and being triumphant over kate. derek wasn't so much incompetent (despite deaton's view) and more so inexperienced.

the failwolf accusations came from fandom making jokes and than it turning into some kind of ascended meme combined with a lot of fanon flanderization of derek's character.

i think people overlook the aspect of derek's arc where he has to overcome peter's influence over his ideas of power and control just as allison had to overcome gerard and kate's influence on her life. parallels parallels parallels y'all.

scott is a surprisingly divisive topic in fandom and derek and scott's relationship even more-so. it's messy and complicated. they both project a lot of their issues onto each other and it's part of their growth that they gradually overcome this.

i'm someone who likes scott. he's not perfect like some say. he doesn't always get his way like some seem to think. he fails a lot too. scott mccall is a messy bitch and the narrative does show that but like teen wolf's writing isn't the strongest.

it's one thing to not like scott. i can respect that. you're not always going to vibe and click with every character. i do, however, think there are those who do it in bad faith and are just downright rude.

people want to put derek and scott in competition. the only person who ever competed with derek was stiles fucking stilinksi in season 1 when he got in his feelings about derek teaching scott.

but really -- jeff wrote that movie by the seat of his pants because it in no way accounted for the two most central characters to the nogitsune plot wouldn't return. the whole thing waffled without stiles and kira being present. i don't necessarily put the blame on him entirely as i'm sure he was under time constraints by the studio.

you don't do two seasons of your six season show on the importance of stiles stilinski and than be able to have a functional narrative without him. scott mccall as a character doesn't make sense without his other half -- who is not allison.

but i think jeff really meant something with derek making the sacrifice to stop the nogtisune and "dying" in fire on top of the nemeton thereby earning alpha status again. i have theories about it bro.

Good Omens 2 ending was perfect, actually, and I'm gonna talk why, cos I got a lot to say.

Naturally, massive spoilers ahead!

The finale ended in a way that makes total sense to me. I hear y'all being like "this isn't canon, no, let them be happy, I hate this!" *proceeds to write a fix-it fanfic that's all fluff and kittens*, but just... listen to me for a moment.

Don't get me wrong, keep writing alternative endings for that temporary fix, but in terms of canon, I believe what Neil wrote is better than anything else that's gonna get create, more or less. Remember, it's important characters stay in-character.

Sure, I sobbed at 5am with a broken mind, heart, and hated everything in the moment, but letting it digest... it actually works very well. People want their "happiliy ever after", and I do too, eventually. But that time isn't now.

Also, side note, to anyone who sent Neil hate mail because of said ending, fuck you. Don't be a sensitive little shit and just accept that stories don't always have to be happy to still be good.

Here we have a 6000+ year relationship/friendship of two non-humans that don't know how to act around each other. THEY DON'T TALK, as Nina said. For them to suddenly get the talking bit down correctly was never going to happen. Which makes the ending so much worse. A quick kick up the backside from 2 people isn't the sudden fix-it to everything. They continued to STILL not talk, not taking even a single day to communicate, think of a plan, anything! I.e "Good luck", "Then there's nothing more to say." The Metatron told Aziraphale to take all the time he needed, and yet Az was gone within 15 mins. Crowley could've said something more, but instead chose to kiss Aziraphale.

Which while it was long overdue, I think it was still too fast. Aziraphale realized his love for Crowley in 1941, according to Michael, which is VERY late to the game, and in the 60s, he said Crowley moved too fast for him. I assume this is still the case, as the 60s wasn't that long ago in angel/demon years. The kiss probably frightened him, because we know what Aziraphale is like, has always BEEN like. He's cautious and jittery and incredibly soft. He's the emodiment of a kitten, and you need to treat him as such.

Had Crowely taken his time with Aziraphale instead, things might've been different. The outcome also might've remained the same, but there would at least be some communication, and probably much less heartbreak. In that moment, Crowley could've really poured his heart out into words, but he didn't. Even during the confession, he ended rather nonchalantly with a "you and me, what do you say?" This is after hearing Aziraphale's news. It's hardly romantic, and gives the same vibe as "let's shack up".

He should be using every ounce of his power to get Aziraphale to stay, but he doesn't. He says his piece, begins to walk off, rubs the non-relationship in Aziraphale's face, kisses him, and then leaves. All this sets up pefectly for a s3 to sort their shit out. I like that it wasn't just a fluffy arc where everything's suddenly perfect, because where would s3 go then? It would be less fun.

I like the angst. I want to enjoy a good show with conflict and difficulty and confusion and anger and whatever else. I want to watch this angel and demon evolve and go through it and realize and learn and love.

What happened at the end of s2; it was ineffable.

The romantic tension between Rapunzel and Eugene is keeping me hooked. How do you approach writing those romantic moments? The character development is spot on. Any challenges or joys in creating this alternate storyline? Can't wait for the next chapter! Keep up the awesome work!

Thank you! I'm definitely not the first person to write Eugene and Cassandra as twins! "Splitting Heirs" by @phantoms-lair and @providentially-demonic is a great fic that builds on a post-canon reveal of this idea, and it's a fabulous story. I would definitely recommend that fic if you love the idea of Cass and Eugene being twins! It can be found on A03!

Writing romantic moments, how do I approach them? Honestly, if there is a particular romantic scene I want to write, I often watch some of their romantic moments from Tangled or the show. I then think about how would these characters react in this situation considering their different upbringing? A lot of their romantic moments seem to just happen without me really having to think too much about it.

The only challenge to the storyline so far has been that it has consistently evolved. Varian and Quirin were never meant to be a part of it, but they have! I plan out a few chapters at a time.

The joy of creating this alternate storyline has been figuring out exactly how the characters would react in this situation. Cassandra, who has grown up loved but feeling empty is suddenly facing a reality that she has a connection to Eugene and doesn't know why. Rapunzel wants to break free and fall in love rather than marry someone she simply would not love. Though she's definitely head-over-heels for Eugene! I'm loving writing Eugene's powers. There is a scene I am really looking forward to writing, and it's going to be GREAT to get to that scene.

Another challenge is figuring out Gothel. She does believe Eugene is giving the Sundrop more power when he's in close connection to it. But she also knows she can't keep him around forever. The reveal that she always planned to kill him was one I was worried about. It seems to have worked though!

Writing Eugene and Cass bickering is so much fun. If they find out the truth about their connection, sparks will fly!

✍️ What’s your ideal writing setup?

I'm not at all particular about where I write as long as it's reasonably quiet and comfy, but I love to write outside in the summer and as soon as I get a new laptop battery I intend to one of those coffee shop writers sipping gravely on a latte while I think about whether my characters should get it on in a library or the kitchen

🚀 Do you like to outline your fic first or create as you go?

Definitely outline, but creating as I go within that outline. Some of the best moments of writing are when the characters come to life and insist on wrecking all your plans for them. Which means the outlines keep evolving.

👓 What helps you focus when you write?

Definitely music! I nearly always listen when I write. It also helps set the emotional tone (sometimes too much and then I have to go back and tone it down)

🦋 Which character is your favorite to write?

Snape. Always Snape. Grey, ambiguous, complex, lonely, loyal, brave. Queer-coded, autistic-coded, masks in public, doesn't fit into anyone's box. And most importantly, someone who pickles slimy things in a laboratory and lines up the jars on his shelves.

Sometimes I wish I could get deep into some other fandom and character but he keeps calling me back.

🦈 Which character is the toughest to write?

Definitely Remus. Because at heart he is a genuinely kind and gentl person, but it's hard to disentangle from his passive-aggressive self-loathing and anxious avoidance. Which is so human and relateable but also really hard to pin down.

💭 What inspires you and your writing?

As someone who loves people and is fascinated by people but is socially quite anxious, writing is a lifeline. I *have* to write. It's all about the vulnerability and intimacy. I'm an absolute fiend for these scared, lonely, closed-up characters learning to let their guard down and be vulnerable with someone, whether a friend or a lover or something in between. And letting themselves love in the midst of their grief, knowing that they could lose again, knowing that grief is, as told by WandaVision, love persevering.

(And on the smuttier side of things, I've come to realize that I have something of a thing for extremely repressed characters having an awakening. Which is why you tend to see a lot of Virgin!Snape tags in my fics. I also love exploring all the awkwardness that comes with being physical and how that ties in to being vulnerable.)

🚦What sort of endings do you prefer to write: ambiguous, bad, happily ever after, etc.?

Happily ever after but with a touch of something to make them feel real, maybe? Everything is okay but the characters have scars or regrets or losses, or they love each other but still have conflict.

Bittersweet endings are so powerful and memorable and beautiful and I love them and hate them and they make me want to chew my arm off. I've only written one, a conclusion to one of the storylines in Vulnera Sanentur and The Bollan Cross. I think about it all the time.

💛 What is the most impactful lesson you’ve learned about writing?

Write what you love. Always. Because there's at least one person out there who will love it too, and it's a story you'll always be able to keep and take with you. And if you're not enjoying it, you don't have to do it! Take a break, switch to a new project, write that self-indulgent thing you've always wanted to.

I am just really fucking mad, y'know?

The past couple months I've been doing a rewatch mostly while I'm working or cooking, separate from making my bf watch spn. I started my rewatch on S4, watching just the episodes with Cas, but when I got to S12, I watched every episode. Mostly because S12 is when I stopped watching it as it aired. I was not in love with the rock star Luci plot, and I had a lot going on and just kind of stopped. I didn't start watching again until 2022, so well after it ended and the ending/ Despair was already known to me.

I think the thing that kept me from getting back into it for so long was I was so burnt out on the mixed messages, gaslighting, and queerbaiting. Just. Over it. And then finding out how nothing paid off... It took me being mostly home with my infant for a year before I made an effort to catch up.

I've since found so much to love about those last few seasons. (and things to hate even harder)... but since this rewatch I've had plenty of time to ferally dig through Tumblr for all the destiel Easter eggs, watch Jackles try to make his own fixit fanfic, witness all the post finale canon events. So because I have been seeing so much more subtext this time around, and because today is the day I hit 15.18 again on the rewatch...

I'm just mad, man.

Maybe this dumb, campy ass, horror-themed soap opera would go away if the CW powers-that-be didn't annihilate the ending of a show that'd spent 15 YEARS developing complicated characters who evolved over time. By the end of the show, TFW changed in so many ways but also didn't. And so much of season 15 (not all) completely ignores the Sam and Dean and Cas of 2020.

One of the things that stands out so much to me, was the episode I am too lazy to look up, where Sam and Dean investigate the death of a childhood friend, it was Baba Yaga, there's childhood flashbacks. That young Dean was HORRIBLE to Sam. Awful. Told him he was too dumb to go to college. Dean Winchester did not say that shit to Sammy. That was insane.

And the way Dean treats Jack. They just gotta have the Dean/Sam headbutting and lying arc (which by this point is ridiculous) so Dean goes back to treating Jack like shit and saying horrible shit.

And after Despair? Dean is just... Fine. Normal. He gets one line where Jensen gets a chance to express Dean's grief. I hate it.

If they had just been loyal to the characters, all of them, spn wouldn't be trending in 2023. I want to punch something.

Hi! Let's go!!!!!

1 - Unsurprisingly, it's this one here. I used to write one-shots and AU ideas for a lot of fandons but I always wanted to write a big project, a full story, be it original or fanfic. And this is the first one.

2 - Since I was 12, I'd say. Though I barely posted any of them, they usually stay between me and my friends.

3 and 4 - (I haven't interacted much with the fandom)

5 - I guess it's Blanket. He's the OC who'll get the most focus out of them on SHoM, and I saw his story evolving as the fic itself did, which was pretty fun. And I love wolves and father figure characters :D

6 - I haven't read many, but I think my favorite was Blue Skies. It's an adorable sonilver one-shot and I love just everything about it.

7 - Again, unsurprisingly, this one. It means a lot to me in terms of it being my first project this big, but it also allows me to tell just the kind of story I want to write - One that focuses on character, trauma, emotions, relationships (platonic, romantic, family, all the kinds). One that has room to have jokes and silliness but can get serious and dark when it needs to. Sonic gave me the perfect terrain to do it and I'll forever hold this series in my heart for that. This fic is very personal and helped me with a lot of my own emotions, and I love sharing it with my close friends.

8 - Ooh, this one is hard. I do love all those little guys and I love love love writing them and seeing them come to life in my story. But, well, I'll be super predictable here and go with Sonic. What can I say, I projected so freaking much on him and he's such a fun protagonist to write. He was also my first real hero back when I was, like, 8, and his strong personality, defiance, humor and kindness stay as the definition of heroic for me to this day. But allow me to pick two honorable mentions: Dr Eggman. Ooooh, I love this guy so much (and I love love love writing him as the evilest mf around). His design is perfect, his voice is perfect, he's such a great, fun antagonist who's ALSO the biggest meme. (And his characterization in Sonic Unleashed is probably my favorite.) And Silver! I love his character, love his duality of kindness and violence, love his story, his powers, he's amazing. And his design is probably my favorite in the series.

Thoughts on Fionna an Cake S1 in general? Curious as to what you think of the new characters (such as scarab or the lemon carbs) + old characters' evolved characterizations (Prismo, Simon, Finn, Fionna. ect) （ if it's not too much of a hassle ofc. ）

Absolutely no hassle

I really enjoyed it, the themes were good and some of the lines are just living rent free in my head I do wish it had more time to explore characters or the other worlds but it's understandable why they didn't

(New Characters) Scarab: he's a completely stick in the mud loser, I love him. his whole motivation being he's mad at Prismo for having his dream job but also is so clearly jealous that people like Prismo is great Hunter: he's trying so hard to sound cool and mystical then is just the silliest man you've ever seen - what little screen time he had is 10/10 Lemon Carbs: I'm not sure about them being involved with food career wise, maybe I'm just put off because of Lemongrab's plot. It does bring up the question if Lemongrab 3 has an equivalent as well (or is this saying Simon still thinks of Lemongrab as two people?) Vampworld PB and Marceline: Both extremely cool. Fictional women who can and will kill make me happy. Plus the amount of tragedy each of them have is super compelling Winter King: Good design and made for a good episode but not really my cup of tea Candy Queen: I don't exactly get why she would kidnap Winter King since he doesn't seem to care about Betty (thus losing the princess motivation on his part) and Candy Queen doesn't have that kind of hang up as far as we know - but also she's silly so I don't care too much about the internal logic there

(Old characters) Prismo: Something is just so powerful about happy characters becoming depressed, and it's written so well. The way he talks and acts are still clearly Pirsmo, they didn't overhaul his personality because he's depressed but wrote his personality into his depression Fionna: It was a really good decision to make her defiant. In the AT fanfic episodes Fionna would often be treated as a plot device and have her personality taken away from her so to have her whole deal be her doing what she wants is really good Cake: I think she changed the most personality wise but I like it. Her refusing to read the room is just fun and I think works better for what they gave us then Cake's original more protective personality would have Simon: This seems natural and I like how they wrote him and the themes in his story but Fionna and Cake's add on to his and Betty's back story made it feel weird/uncomfortable. It made it more bitter then sweet for me I guess? Finn: I was a little thrown off by how he tried to help Simon because it felt more like how Jake would help someone then how Finn would (maybe that was the point though?) Farmwold Finn: I adore how serious he is. The juxtaposing of Fionna wanting magic and adventure to this Finn is really good Honestly loved the human versions for everyone else who reappeared in Fionna's world, Gary being a soft dork, Marshal- not helping his friend because he would have to talk to his mom but will call his mom to help a stranger because they're cute -Lee, and Elis P. is genuinely funny

Hyde's Long Way Home by @those70scomics

This is probably the one I reread the most, tied with the same creator's One Difference: Jackie and Hyde Don't Kiss (During the Summer), primarily because I just absolutely adore their writing and the way they so effortlessly write Jackie and Hyde, both as individuals and as a couple. It definitely helps that the story is set right at the start of the Chicago debacle, meaning there's canon divergence, and thank god for that; I'm a staunch season-eight denier. I'm also a sucker for a good groundhog day situation, and this work scratches that itch and then some. This one's definitely a lot heavier than some other fics I love—hence the mature rating—but it's oh-so worth it.

The Queen Of All My Dreams by @springsteenicious

Fantasy isn't normally a genre I consider when looking at Jackie/Hyde fanfiction, but this fic is wholly worth diving into a different genre, especially since it does the genre justice. The story begins a few days after Chicago and features a whole lot of magic and adventure, giving it a Lord of the Rings feel, minus the stuffiness of typical fantasy stories. The gang still very much feels like the gang, and everyone's character progression feels natural and not at all outlandish or forced, which many fix-it stories (can this be considered a fix-it? Maybe for season 7?) tend to struggle with.

Miracle by B_August (I don't know if they're on tumblr, but if they are, PLEASE send me their blog so I can follow it!)

Good lord, where to begin with this one? As you've probably guessed if you've read any of the stuff I've put out, I've got a soft spot for strong!Jackie, and an even softer spot for Jackie with powers. Miracle has absolutely all of that. It also features an incredibly sweet Steven Hyde, a surprisingly attentive Jack Burkhart, and my absolute favorite, the effervescent Buddy Morgan. It is a little out of character at times, sure, but the characterization makes sense for the point of the story in which things start changing, as well as the changed circumstances around the lives of the gang. There's also the added bonus of many, many DC references (a welcome side-effect of being a Superman story of sorts). I highly, HIGHLY recommend it!! Of All Things Creepy & Unnatural by CaedenceLaura

This one's over on fanfiction.net! It explores how the Jackie/Hyde dynamic might have evolved differently had the rest of the gang not learned of their relationship sooner. Personally, I really enjoyed the secret relationship aspect of this fic, and though they do get found out eventually, it's nice to see how having that extra time to themselves might've strengthened their bond. This fic isn't complete, but still worth a read!

Steven Who? by kezztip

This is another one that I reread quite frequently. There are few fics on this list that genuinely make me laugh out loud several times per read-through, but this one never fails to get me chuckling. The premise is just... I almost don't even want to say anything, just so you can read it for yourself. Going in blind might be the way with this one.

Heart Like Yours by @jacquelineshyde

Something in me is really drawn to the concept of Hyde realizing just how much he cares for Jackie a little too late. In most fics, the "little too late" aspect of that typically means that Jackie's moved on to some other guy or something like that; that's still relevant in this one, but she's also straight up in a coma, and to me that makes the despair of the situation all that tastier. Add to that some good ol' out-of-body action, and, well, you've got yourself a fun little If I Stay spin on our T7S universe.

Abigor were an Emperor, but was overthrown and people cut off his arms. This caused some kind of psychological trauma and he can't grown or regenerate he's arms anymore.

His true form, based on chinese spirit of west, white tiger Baihu (some sources say, Baihu guarded gates to hell, so, why this spirit can't be just a demon-liar?)

Fire: What’s a scene that you are dying to write?

There's a lot of them. But for the current big WIP, I'm both really hoping to get to part 2 (because part 1 really is just setting up the world the characters inhibit) so that the plot can really begin. And In particular, I'm really hoping to get to the bit where I go a little bit more into detail about the main antagonist's backstory, and how he ended up in his position of power.

Ice: What do you always get stuck on when writing?

It kind of depends. Usually when I'm stuck on writing, it's because I'm feeling tired from other life stuff. But generally I can keep writing and meet my daily goals by just... pushing myself to stick it out until it's done more or less ^^;. This style of writing and word-dumping when I'm too tired to write properly is producing this mess of a first draft which will no doubt be a headache to clean through, but hey, better than nothing.

Clouds: How clearly do you picture a scene before you start writing it down?

I think I generally need a rough idea about what I'm writing towards before I can properly write anything down. I don't think I necessarily picture anything really clearly, but as long as I have the outline, sitting down and writing it out tends to help that outline materialise into something more solid.

Spring: Have you ever scrapped (a huge chunk of) a story to start over?  Why did the change come about?

Yeah totally. I think I restarted writing this current WIP like three times before sticking with the current beginning. I needed to get myself to stop rewriting the intro, so I made myself stop at three times. But I think during the rewrite, I will have to redo the beginning now lol. There's one that'll be much more fitting I have in mind now, based on what the story is evolving to be.

I also restarted writing a bunch of my fanfics back in the day. Mostly because back then, I was mostly learning to write by producing huge quantities of stories. And if I couldn't keep writing until the story was done, I took it as a sign that something was wrong.

In particular, I restarted my Sonic Boom Skylanders angst fic at least three times before I got to the final version. This was a part of my NaNoWriMo project that year. I still counted all the words of fic that I wrote but never published towards the word count for the challenge, but the first two versions, when I tried to write them, about halfway through I felt like something was off and I couldn't figure out how to continue. So I just... dropped them. And restarted. Until I got to the final version.

I loved Midnight Meetings. You absolutely nailed all of the character's voices, and all of their interactions were perfectly in character and very entertaining.

Scar and Mumbo both trying to claim they're normal and average guys, and Grian thinking about how humans don't have tails when he is a (former) human with wings. Idiots unite. I am so fond of them.

Very curious what Bdubs might have had to say on the matter of Mumbo's claim to Boatem...

I also remain curious about Mumbo's shadow magic and why he has it as a Turned. I keep thinking back to that one line about Mumbo wondering if he made a deal with a higher power. I suspect I am barking up the wrong tree, but I have managed to convince myself it is somehow linked to the connection between the Watchers, the Void, and the Boatem hole.

Laughing at all of the vampires being like "Scar doesn't live here? Tubbo is leaving??? How do you live like this Mumbo???"

"I wanna bring some stuff back for Etho and the others" made me laugh. I realise Bdubs probably meant the rest of the coven by "the others" but for a second I did go "how big is this polycule???"

They're totally normal aren't they, the half-human Fae prince with way too much magic for his own health and the Vampire who was a Duke, a Governor, a Mayor and a Doctor who also has way too strong magic for his status? Totally normal. Okay but to be fair, Grian's definition of "human" is rather different from the Vampires' and Elf's definition. When they say "human" they mean humans and humanoid hybrids. When Grian says "human" he means just humans and not the hybrids....... for now. :) But yes they're all idiots I love them <3

Hmmmm Void Beasts? Well, in Midnight at least (bc Void Beasts are a thing in other MC fanfics if I am remembering correctly) a Void Beast is a creature of legend that is born and lives in the Void (which is, ofc, a central point of many of the religions of the world in Midnight), the only mortal creature that can survive there alongside the gods. Void Beasts themselves can't breathe oxygen, being evolved specifically for the Void. Xisuma can breathe oxygen, since he's a humanoid hybrid, but it's not the most comfortable thing for him which is why he wears his mask. Only a handful of people have seen him without the mask, as he only takes it off to feed. As for what Void Beasts look like- well. Hm :) I wonder about that heheh
