Could you plan the senior Fall Formal with your (hot) nemesis? Well, Whit has to. Frenemies Whit and Zay have been at odds for years (ever since he broke up with her freshman year in, like, the most embarrassing way imaginable), but when they're forced to organize their high school's Fall Formal together, everything changes. Has their friction been a big misunderstanding all along? Blisteringly funny and profoundly well-observed, The Fall of Whit Rivera is a snug and cozy autumn romcom that also touches on weighty issues like PCOS, grief, Dis/ability, sexuality, and class. Funny, honest, insightful, romantic, and poignant, it is Classic Crystal Maldonado—and it will have readers absolutely swooning. This is the book equivalent of a hot mug of cinnamon tea, a soft red scarf, and a fresh apple-cider muffin. Pumpkin spice lattes for everybody!

Book Blurb: Could you plan the Fall Formal with your (hot) nemesis? Whit Rivera is about to find out.
Frenemies Whit and Zay have been at odds for years (ever since he broke up with her in, like, the most embarrassing way imaginable), so when they’re forced to organize the fall formal together, it's a literal disaster. Sparks fly as Whitney—type-A, passionate, a perfectionist, and a certified sweater-weather fanatic—butts heads with Zay, a dry, relaxed skater boy who takes everything in stride. But not all of those sparks are bad. . . .
Has their feud been a big misunderstanding all along?
Blisteringly funny and profoundly well-observed, The Fall of Whit Rivera is a snug and cozy autumn romcom that also tackles weightier topics like PCOS, chronic illness, sexuality, fatphobia, Latine identity, and class. Funny, honest, insightful, romantic, and poignant, it is classic Crystal Maldonado—and it will have her legion of fans absolutely swooning.
Review:
Frenemies/exes are forced to work together to create the perfect fall formal but sparks are beginning to fly. Whit loves autumn, it's the time her grandparents fell in love, it's when Pumpkin spice lattes are back, and everything about it just makes her happy. Whit's been having a tough summer, having PCOS and all that comes with it, from gaining weight, losing hair, growing hair, the exhaustion, the pain, and just not being able to know what is happening to her. But with school back and the fall formal coming up, Whit is determined to make this fall the best one ever. Whit is a perfectionist, some might say a control freak, and is determined to do the best, but when she has to work with Isiah "Zay" her ex boyfriend who ghosted her in middle school, and the now very hot skater boy who takes everything in stride (the complete opposite of her), Whit knows its going to be a difficult time, or is it? The more time they spend together the more Whit finds herself falling for him. Yet she is also dealing with family drama, her chronic illness (that she's been keeping a secret) and her struggle with wanting to make the fall formal perfect. Can she get her perfect autumn or are some things out of her control? This was a really cozy autumn read, filled with second chance romance, the autumn vibes for days, and a Latina character who is dealing with PCOS. It had a lot of great diversity and the attention to family bound and culture was beautiful. The romance was sweet and I liked all the side characters and their plots too. I really liked seeing Whit grow and seeing her allow herself to relax and to overcome a lot of her struggles. It really was a fun read overall and the perfect book to add to your autumn tbr.
*Thanks Netgalley and Holiday House / Peachtree / Pixel+Ink, Holiday House for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

The Fall of Whit Rivera by Crystal Maldonado
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Whit Rivera was diagnosed with PCOS last summer, and struggled through many of the uncomfortable symptoms alone. She has (mostly) gotten to place where she has accepted her diagnosis, but with senior year starting will all her insecurities come back? Like why is her boyfriend Aiden being so distant, will everyone at school notice her weight gain, and will her sister Lilly fit in her freshman year? Whit’s problems only seem to magnify when she is chosen to lead the board to organize the Fall Fest with her ex, who she hates, Zay. Except when did Zay become so fit, and nice?
This book is such a sweet story! It has all the elements of a classic romcom with a cozy fall setting. The representation in the story was everywhere….chronic illness, LGBTQ+, Black and brown people, Latina culture, etc. This book is definitely for YA and teens, and the writing style catered to that (which is good, kids need to read stories with representation). But if you’re looking for a more adult romance this book isn’t it. I liked this book, and all the candied apple sweetness within!
Read if you love:
🧡: Enemies to Friends to Lovers
🌈: LGBTQ+ rep
✊🏽: Black/brown representation
🫔: Latino/a culture
😷: Chronic Illness rep
🧩: ASD rep

New Releases - Week of Oct. 9, 2023
We have history, fantasy, a contemporary rom-com, a memoir, and a retelling this week. It's quite a range in just four books. Does anything catch your eye?
Brooms by Jasmine Walls Levine Querido
It’s 1930s Mississippi. Magic is permitted only in certain circumstances, and by certain people. Unsanctioned broom racing is banned. But for those who need the money, or the thrills…it’s there to be found.
Meet Billie Mae, captain of the Night Storms racing team, and Loretta, her best friend and second-in-command. They’re determined to make enough money to move out west to a state that allows Black folks to legally use magic and take part in national races.
Cheng-Kwan – doing her best to handle the delicate and dangerous double act of being the perfect “son” to her parents, and being true to herself while racing.
Mattie and Emma — Choctaw and Black — the youngest of the group and trying to dodge government officials who want to send them and their newly-surfaced powers away to boarding school.
And Luella, in love with Billie Mae. Her powers were sealed away years ago after she fought back against the government. She’ll do anything to prevent the same fate for her cousins.
Brooms is a queer, witchy Fast and the Furious that shines light on history not often told – it’s everything you’d ever want to read in a graphic novel.
The Fall of Whit Rivera by Crystal Maldonado Holiday House
Frenemies Whit and Zay have been at odds for years (ever since he broke up with her in, like, the most embarrassing way imaginable), so when they’re forced to organize the fall formal together, it’s a literal disaster.
Huda F Cares by Huda Fahmy Dial Books
Huda and her sisters can’t believe it when her parents announce that they’re actually taking a vacation this summer . . . to DISNEY WORLD! But it’s not quite as perfect as it seems. First Huda has to survive a 24-hour road trip from Michigan to Florida, with her sisters annoying her all the way. And then she can’t help but notice the people staring at her and her family when they pray in public. Back home in Dearborn she and her family blend right in because there are so many other Muslim families, but not so much in Florida and along the way.
It’s a vacation of forced (but unexpectly successful?) sisterly bonding, a complicated new friendship, a bit more independence, and some mixed feelings about her family’s public prayers. Huda is proud of her religion and who she is, but she still sure wishes she didn’t care so much what other people thought.
Realm of Wonders (The Queen’s Council #3) by Alexandra Monir Disney Hyperion
Jasmine thought that she had earned her happily ever after when she and Aladdin defeated Jafar. Then her beloved father dies and, overnight, all her plans for the future change. Instead of her wedding, she’s now planning a funeral and a coronation—her coronation, to become the first woman to rule Agrabah. Jasmine has always been headstrong, but for the first time in her life, she finds herself faltering.
Then from beyond the grave, her father seems to pass along a message: Someone is coming. She must find the book. Before Jasmine can figure out what that means, her claim to the throne is called into question.
Her father’s old counsellors decree that the best way to determine the true ruler is a tournament; a series of tests, each one increasing in difficulty—and danger. Now, with help from the mystical Queen’s Council, Jasmine must assemble her own team of advisers, win the tournament, and uncover the mystery of her father’s last message, so she can prove to her people—and herself—that she deserves to rule Agrabah.

My lack of Youtube aside, I really love this tag and wanted to do for my own reading so far this year! I found the questions from Fangirl Fury however this tag was created by Ely and Chamie over on Youtube a long time ago to show your favourite books of the year, these are the books that stand out to me so far.
Best Book You’ve Read So Far: I am torn between Sea Of Tranqulity and The Kiss Quotient. Very different in style, they may be however these two books have such great characterisation and a writing style that just pulled me in. I loved every moment of reading these books and I'd highly recommend both reads to anyone.
Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far: I mean I know technically it's a prequel, but I'm going to say Day Of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon. The way she has created the world and how her characters linger in my mind long after the book has finished leaves me thinking I need to know more, I need to know what happened after this and I think that's a sign of a great, great book.
New Release(s) You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To (AKA here’s a glimpse at my TBR pile): Amari and The Great Game is a book I can't wait to read after the first one was just so good, I'm waiting for it from the library currently. When Women Were Dragons and Seasonal Fears are coming on holiday with me, I need to read those books as I've been looking forward to them for so long.
Biggest Disappointment: How To Kill Men And Get Away With It - The main character in this book was so awful and literally *hated women* I was like please let this woman get caught so I can stop reading this book. I also feel Death On Gokumon Island is not a bad book but no one warned me how slow it is. Great finale to the book though.
Biggest Surprise: I don't really have any surprises that come to mind, I feel like when you know your taste, you tend to give more books five stars (I don't take pride in how few five stars I give, I think that's generally a bad sign you still don't know what you like, call me controversial) but as someone not really into romance so much, maybe The Kiss Quotient and how much I loved it.
Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year: The Last Devil To Die by Richard Osman comes out later this year and it's definitely a book I want to read as soon as possible. The Fall Of Whit Rivera by Crystal Maldonado is also on my list too and whenever Silverborn comes out, I will be there. But the one I've got on preorder is the BTS book 'Beyond The Story' - 544 pages of photos, their history and QR codes that link to videos about their time as a group.
Favorite New Author (Debut or New to You): New to me, I would say for Helen Hoang, and I can't wait to read more of her books. Debut books I've read so far this year that stand out are 'Everyone's Invited' by Sara Soma - a non fiction book about feminism, Careless by Kirsty Capes is brilliant and the characterisation is incredible, Black Butterflies by Priscilla Morris also stands out.
What books would be the answer to these questions for you? I'd love to know!
Vee xo.

The Fall of Whit Rivera -  Crystal Maldonado

Read Date - November 2024
Length - 352 pages
Genre - Romance, LGBTQ+, Contemporary
Rating - 8/10
Stars - ★★★★☆
Notes - The beginning of this novel talking about PCOS and the love of autumn is a perfect start for me. It hits the nail on the head with the PCOS and gets a jump on one of the struggles in this book right away. It also addresses the main theme: Fall. I love fall. The talk of weight gain is beautifully crafted into the narrative to perfectly display the feelings of truly being fat. As someone who's just lost weight after being very fat, i heavily relate to Whit's talk of how different the shopping is, the way people treat you, and the way everyone comments on your body. Whit however, because of her PCOS, gained weight and couldn't lose it. Whit having to shave her face for the first time, as a woman, is a tough situation. The story of how Whit's Abuela met her Abuelo was so sweet. If i didnt have it as a library book, id have this entire section highlighted. The relationship between her and Aiden faltering out is sad but normal for teenage relationships. Whit finding it hard to give up control of her sister is a sweet scene. Her sister has autism, so she's always tried to protect her when her abuela couldn't, but her sister, lily, isn't a child anymore, and she wants to grow up, too. Aiden and Whit breaking up was so anticlimactic. He was basically emotionally cheating on her the entire time he was away. Whit navigating through her social faux pas with Isaiah was nice, and i'm glad there wasn't a miscommunication trope. I'm not a fan of that. The struggle between Whit and Lily growing apart because Lily is growing up is difficult, and while i understand, it's obvious that Whit is in the wrong here. Lily has to learn on her own. Whit slowly falling in love (and mainly crushing on Isaiah) was so sweet. It's very pining and puppy love. I think the fight between Lily and Whit is so cruelly accurate in the way that life IS like this and there's nothing we can do about it-- because it's LIFE. Lily isn't a baby anymore, and Whit has to let go of the control. I know I'm WAY LATE in this novel to mention how much i love the spanish, but i love the spanish because it reminds me of fall in New Mexico where i live. it's beautiful. The talk of Whit becoming an occupational therapist because her sister has autism is SO cool to me. That's why the clinic i go to for therapy for my autism was created-- because the owners brother had autism. It's such an amazing thing to do as a family member to go into a line of work that helps more people like your family. It's incredible to me, and i love that Whit is thinking about this. Whit's cyst rupturing was a shock that i wasn't expecting. She goes to the hospital, but she's worried about the cost of the hospital bill and the shitty healthcare system. Zay and Whitney getting together while she's sick in the hospital was so adorable for me. It was well timed and the way its phrased was perfect. Whitney missing the festival was sad, and i hope she gets to get better quick. The fall dance was so beautiful and i love that Lily was respected and wasn't forced into the spotlight. Isaiah and Whit are so cute together and i think it's nice that they played the boy band the rivera family is obsessed with. The boy band reuniting and them redoing the date they went on as kids was such an adorable ending to the book. The halloween trick or treating and fall festivities in this book are so amazing, and it really got me in the spirit for the rest of november. I loved this book a LOT.

Note
I have a lot of book recs with fat MCs! mostly YA because I’m not all that into adult romance which is what I find most fat positive adult books I’ve come across are.
I could probably write entire essays about each of these books but I’ll stick to titles, authors, and age range for the sake of keeping this post a reasonable length.
Middle Grade (recommended for ages 8-12)
Starfish by Lisa Fipps
Camp Sylvania by Julie Murphy
Barely Floating by Lilliam Rivera
Young Adult (recommended for ages 14-18)
The Dos and Donuts of Love by Adiba Jaigirdar
I’ll Be the One by Lyla Lee
Fat Chance, Charlie Vega by Crystal Maldonado
No Filter and Other Lies by Crystal Maldonado
The Fall of Whit Rivera by Crystal Maldonado
Out of Character by Jenna Miller
Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy
We Won’t End Up Together by Alex Nonymous
The No-Girlfriend Rule by Christen Randall
Adult (recommended for adults lol)
At First Spite by Olivia Dade
Sing Anyway by Anita Kelly
All of these are contemporary, mostly including romance, except for Camp Sylvania which is about vampires.
I’m assuming anon was looking for fiction but if you’re interested in nonfiction What We Don’t Talk About When We Talk About Fat by Aubrey Gordon is great.
Also bonus rec: I’m currently reading Fat Girl Dances With Rocks by Susan Stinson. It’s out of print and I’m not far enough in to say definitively that I think it’s good rep but I’m loving it so far.
Do you (or your followers) have any book recs with good fat characters
Really good question actually, I read a lot of books but I frankly only ever encounter the exact opposite (fatphobia) 😬 I feel like I've heard of some romance novels with fat protagonists but that's not really my genre of choice so I wouldn't be able to recommend any myself
Does anyone have any suggestions? I would be interested to hear them as well 🙏

Some years ago I got the idea of some MCU-ish story with cartoon heroes. I called it CCU (Cartoon Cinematic Universe, very original). It is a dead project I´m not working in, but I think I should at least talk about it.
I was inspired by two things. First, as I already said, the MCU. Just a bunch of interconnected movies. Then there is the fanfiction of the Heroes-Unite. This is a fanfiction I read about in Fanfiction.net that I love. Five teen heroes (Ben Tennyson, Kim Possible, Danny Fenton, Jake Long and Jenny Wakeman) form a team and fight evil. Usual stuff. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10115521/1/Heroes-Unite
So yeah, with all of this, I thought of these kind of movies. Here a list with some description. It is not perfect, so many ideas may be great copycats or terrible writing. I just wanted to share this.
Ben 10
Origin story of Ben Tennyson. Vilgax attacks Galvan Prime and Azmuth is forced to escape with the Omnitrix. He gets to Earth and, as he is dying, he gives the Omnitrix to Ben Tennyson. Now the kid must save the whole universe from Vilgax, who is approaching Earth to acquire the weapon.
Danny Phantom
Origin story of the halfa. Danny is a normal kid whit ghost hunter parents. They create a portal to the Ghost Zone, the place where almost all ghosts come from. Danny, in an accident, messes up with the portal and becomes Danny Phantom. While at first he wants to use his powers for good, the government and everyone in Amity Park think he is a monster. The Men in White, the government organization related to paranormal investigation, employ Vlad Masters to create another half-ghost that can stop Danny. But, Vlad gets out of control and, wishing to just follow his own interests, becomes a menace for the world. It is up to Danny Phantom to save the day.
Ben 15
Ben, five years after getting the Omnitrix, tries to unlock the powers hidden in the artifact. His best friend, Kevin Levin, helps him to do so, but accidentally the alien DNA gets stuck in Kevin. He now blames Tennyson for making him a monster, and seeks for vengeance.
American Dragon
Jake Long is in secret the American Dragon and protects the magical world from all kind of dangers. The worst of them is the Huntsclan, an organization that wants the destruction of all magical creatures. Jake isn´t alone, as his girlfriend, Rose, works as a spy under the name of Huntsgirl. During one battle with the Huntsclan, the magical world is revealed to the humans. The Dragon Council take Jake´s powers. With the American Dragon out of the picture, the Huntsman recollects the Aztec Skulls to wipe out all magical creatures from the planet. Can a powerless Jake recover his powers and stop the Huntsclan?
Kim Possible
Kim is a student with a hobby to stop villains during her free time, making her some half-time superhero. Her father was employed by the Plumbers to create a weapon to destroy all paranormal activity in Amity Park. When the weapon is ready, Dr. Drakken and his assistant, Shego, steal the weapon and use it as a threat for their purposes. Now Kim Possible and her allies must save the day.
XJ-9
Dr. Norman Wakeman, a Plumber afraid of all the world threats of the last year, creates a robot called XJ-9 to protect the Earth. She names her Jenny. Meanwhile, many alien races fight over the Earth´s rule, mainly Vilgax and the Irkens. Taking advantage of that situation, Vexus mobilizes her Cluster to attack the planet. XJ-9 must stop her.
The Heroes United: ZIM Invasion
The Irkens send their best agent, Zim, to get data from the planet Earth and steal Dr. Possible´s missile. The Irkens are about to conquer everything. Max Tennyson, in response, creates a team of teen heroes to protect the world. Ben Tennyson, Kim Possible, Danny Phantom, Jake Long and Jenny Wakeman are the last hope for everyone.
This is just Phase 1. Later I wanted to include El Tigre: The adventures of Manny Rivera, Randy Cunningham: 9th grade ninja, Gravity Falls, Wander Over Yonder, Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Star vs the Forces of Evil, and Samurai Jack. I also wanted to include the Villains-Unite from the fanfiction (the arch-enemy team) for Phase 2 and Aku as the Thanos for Phase 3. Maybe I´ll write about it later. Have a nice day.
But, anyways, I recommend you to read my fanfiction of the Dragon Knight. It has this cartoons, Marvel, DC and an original Mexican superhero. It is great! https://archiveofourown.org/works/30829988
