A common joke that comes with freshwater lakes is that they are superior to the saltwater because they are "shark-free." While indeed many ponds and rivers can rest easy knowing they don't have razor-toothed flesh eating fish within them, that comfort cannot be given to all freshwater bodies. One must remember that every ecosystem has its predators, with issues only arising when they get too big or aggressive. Yes, the lakes don't have sharks, but they have other fish that some would consider even worse...
The native Americans knew quite well where log gars could be found. It was in waters where their canoes were chewed into splinters. This is because log gars possess a nasty set of serrated teeth and an incredible aggression towards wooden objects. Log gars are carnivorous fish, using their long toothy jaws to shred prey. While they will happily eat whatever they come across, it should be noted that their primary prey are beavers. This is where their saw-like teeth come into play, as these weapons help rip through beaver dens and dams so that they can get at the morsels behind the wooden walls. A lifestyle of devouring beavers has led to the species developing a link between food and wood, where chewing through wooden objects inevitably leads to meat. While this does lead to them attacking fallen branches, their beliefs were validated when man and his wooden boats came to their waters.
The natives of these regions learned this lesson, and so would others who came. Canoes of wood and birch bark were seen as targets, and the log gar's teeth sawed through them with ease. Torn open by these eager fish, the boats would sink and leave the floating men inside at the mercy of these gar. To no surprise, quite a few folk were devoured by the log gar. Even loggers who floated their products down the river fell to these nasty fish, who detected the presence of meat atop it all. Many attempts were made to be rid of these terrors, but the log gar is no easy foe. Their bodies are covered with hard scales coated in dentine, which can repel spear and hook. Attempts to stab them often fail, and their razor teeth mean hook and line is easily severed. Nets are torn to ribbons and any more extreme efforts would jeopardize the rest of the aquatic life within. Even if someone were to master a way to catch them, their populations are high enough that it would be impossible to deplete them by hand.
Even as nasty as they are, natives did occasionally succeed in catching these fish or finding dead ones. Those that they could harvest would have their scales used as arrowheads and shielding, while their jaws made fine makeshift saws. Log gar meat is seen as disgusting, due to its composition and their propensity to swallow a whole lot of sawdust during their feeding frenzies. Their hard scales also make them a pain to fillet, though they may help make your knife sharper!
Log gars proved to be a menace in many lakes, causing quite a few to be marked off limits for water sports and other recreational activities. When man started to switch from wood to fiberglass, the attacks on these vessels lessened. The few log gar that made the mistake of attacking these ships often perished after swallowing chunks of fiberglass, leading to a painful demise. While this does make water travel safer against these fish, it still isn't recommended in some areas due to the possibility of someone falling in. Even if your boat doesn't sink, an accidental tumble into the water can end in a bloody demise.
Though hated and feared by many, often considered pests and menaces, the log gar does get its rare times to shine. Their scales make for neat jewelry, and one renowned power tool company has one as their mascot. They are also highly valued as fishing trophies, due to the extreme difficulty to catch one and the fact that many older larger specimens remain around today. And who could forget the charming children's safety scissors made to look just like them?

ame-no-habakiri as a touken danshi please god. the sword closest to the divinity that others can only dream of.
#a sword wielded by one of the two gods of creation and used by the god of storms to kill orochi !!#(izanagi and susanoo respectively)#iirc the one used to slay orochi is actually enshrined somewhere#would that. be too op? so much so that its lore would overshadow mkzk too?#we've got religious swords but i dont think any of them explicitly mention god. as in a shinto one.#oh wait shishiou has a line about hachiman daibosatsu. and aizen abt aizen myouou#i also find it interesting how mkzk doesnt refer to tsukuyomi but rather to the moon itself.#like in hanamaru's ep4 ed he sings 'let us pray to the moon for the sake of tomorrow'#its meaningless to pursue this line of thought really. i just find the nearabsence of mention of gods interesting.#maybe the fact that the revisionists cant go all the way back in time to prevent izng and iznm creating the island of japan is evident of#the fact that they have limits to their time travel?#randomeows#tbr tho kusanagi-no-tsurugi probably has a better chance of becoming a toudan apropos being one of the three imperial regalia#im attached to ame-no-habakiri more tho bc it has the entire slaying orochi song and dance. and also bc omj

it's been like 3 hours and i can't stop thinking about xiao and aether. you guys don't get it. it's the way the heart in qixing is likely referring to aether. it's because aether dedicated his poem and his dreams to xiao. it's because xiao smiled when he heard it. it's the way he's always looking out for aether. it's because even though everything was okay xiao made the effort to be vocal about how worried he was when aether pretended to drown. it's because aether is the only person capapable of persuading xiao, to the point others are aware he would do anything for him only and use it to convince him every chance they get. it's because aether is the only person capable of relieving the pain of xiao's karmic debt, not because of his powers but solely by being a part of xiao's life. it's because during the lantern rite instead of looking at the sky xiao looks at aether. it's because everytime they're together everyone else always comments about how close and fond of each other they are. it's because xiao is the only character aether is able to have alone time with without paimon. it's because as long as aether says his name xiao will always answer his call.
#I COULD GO ON#i'm not over their smiles#i will never get over their smiles#they actually look like they're in love#aether talked like wtf actually during a time limited event? out of nowhere? đ#TO SAY HIS POEM TO XIAO?#sorry but that's homosexual behaviour#okay i'll shut up now#but i love them so so much#i also saw leaks about this event and i know this will get even gayer so prepare for my screams on monday too bye shsjhsjs#okay but let me add the fact xiao is becoming more and more social and how traveller specifically encourages him to talk with others#and waiting for them to be alone to speak#xiao's growth being shown so well as time goes on throughout the game is one of my favourite things in genshin#i like when there's obvious care in telling a story and using time to emphasise it#i think it makes it so much more meaningful#and traveller being pointed out as the reason xiao is able to heal and grow is extremely beautiful#like no matter what their connection is just so pure and loving#something about being able to explore the world when you have a safe space to come back to#that's what xiao was lacking and that he now has with someone :')

something else I really love about feast and famine is how wwx isn't all 'wow lan zhan you're the best I can't believe you've been putting up with me I'm SO grateful you're literally perfect even though I'm so needy thank you so so so much' bc that sentiment arises in a lot of fics that handle his trauma or mental health and it's SO tiresome not to mention ooc. like it's not there for no reason bc wwx did express gratitude in canon and lwj IS a really good and supportive partner, but it's really refreshing to see wwx in a stable and reliable enough relationship where, except that one time he was triggered and panicking, he literally never once doubted that lwj would support and stand with him, nor did he ever feel the need to even thank lwj for being a good partner, even through the extremely heavy and difficult work of supporting him through what happened
and they DO communicate a lot, it's more that the gratitude is left unsaid because it's mutually understood to be unnecessary. and as much I'm in favor of them communicating their gratitude to each other, I feel like this dynamic for them is so much healthier and more mature and illustrates how strong their relationship is and how much they trust each other. also the idea of lwj as this...saintlike martyr who nobly supports and reassures a self-hating wwx is really tiring. he has his own struggles to be sure, but he has them away from wwx and the writing doesn't frame him as some tragic, self-sacrificing hero for it. like I love lwj but that's what it should be about, right? this was always going to be wwx's story first and foremost and I really appreciate works that let it be that
#like lwj freaking out to his brother or telling jyl about his trauma around his mom and going to support groups#that was so necessary and important for him. and wwx probably knew he was doing it. but he and the narrative didn't make it wwx's problem#OR make a big deal of not making it wwx's problem which is the more annoying and common trend#one of my early criticisms abt this fic was actually that they were TOO well-adjusted and healthy#wwx's past trauma seems to be limited to whatever made him scared of dogs and getting disowned as a teenager#which is awful to be sure but not rly comparable to canon#and in fact I was surprised his canon suicidal tendancies never showed up#but I think he was in a safe and supportive enough environment that that also made sense#like. everything possible that could be done was done. lwj came back from his trip. jyl was with him from that first morning#jc came in to help even though he fucked it up initially I think wwx clearly was really happy to have him there#he didn't have to work or worry about food or money or being alone#not that the current system is perfect obviously. like he did get a bunch of therapy and specialized therapy but#he got medical care immediately which while necessary was ALSO traumatizing and went to support groups which ALSO were horrible/demeaning#but overall compared to canon post-SS#he was able to break down and process everything in a healthy way#instead of suppressing his trauma because he has an obligation to be strong for others or to keep people alive#in canon he doesn't really have that freedom until postres. and then post-travels even#and by then things have faded with time. but I wonder if that makes it easier or harder to process them#esp since most of the people who he was close to back then are all gone#anyway. fic I think about literally constantly but idk if I can reread it all again it's very painful and heavy. like most of it but#the hospital scene is just so horrifying#not my favorite but up there maybe. I certainly regard it higher than a place to hide for exactly the reasons listed in the post#the first sex scene is so cringe tho đ I must sound like a maniac. like that post about showing ppl hxh for the first time#but it's so well-written besides that part I PROMISE#suicide tw#just a mention but eh#ficblogging

DATV Spoilers - The Story We Lost
Posted earlier that I was compiling a list of lore/story threads that have been dropped with DATV's handling of Southern Thedas. The sheer number of things means that I've made this into two parts - this one focusing on all the story threads that have been effectively dropped.
Spoilers for the game ahead, of course.
If you've played the game then you'll know that Southern Thedas - everything from the past three games - was basically swept away by the blight.
A double blight should have catastrophic consequences for the entirety of Thedas, I donât deny that, itâs nothing short of a mass extinction event â the absolute worst case scenario for all of Thedas.
However, waving away the fact that Southern Thedas - specifically every area you ever traveled to and interacted with in previous games â is gone, devastated by the blight, in a codex entry and line of dialogue makes it abundantly clear that BioWare is attempting to clean the slate so that they can move forwards with the game series with no ties to the previous ones.
The Warden, Hawke, and the Inquisitor effectively accomplished nothing.
As I put it in another post: I never expected them to consider every decision in game outside of the three options they gave us, but I certainly didnât expect them to go scorched earth on the possibility of ever seeing the results of those decisions either.
How the lore has been handled in this game, summarized to âthe elves did itâ and âthereâs been a shadowy organization in the shadows pulling the strings on everythingâ is absolutely devastating to the franchise.
The lack of care with which this was treated just bleeds, âThere, weâve answered all questions and finished with this era of Thedas. Moving on now.â At the same time, this destruction absolutely obliterated whatever story threads remained from the first three games.
Could BioWare bring these threads back? Yes, I suppose. But it doesn't change that it was so carelessly thrown aside in the first place.
If they didn't want people to care about their decisions and the impact they made on the world, perhaps they shouldn't have made that a feature of all the previous games.
-------------------------------------------
Story Threads/ Plot Points that were dropped:
Limited my points to what was in the Dragon Age Keep and what points were brought up frequently in codex entries, conversations, etc...
Edit: I never expected all of these points to be answered in DATV - this is just a list of what was effectively brushed to the side through very bad handling of lore and story.
-------------------------------------------
Dragon Age: Origins
What is the line of succession in Ferelden?
Things are looking very grim for Ferelden's succession and the Theirin/MacTir line if nothing is done. And nothing was done. The entire plot of DAO literally culminated in resolving this issue, yet no one seems to have learnt a thing from it?
- Anora ruling alone is unmarried with no heir - Alistair ruling alone is unmarried with no heir - Ruling together they have no heir - Alistair and a Cousland Queen have no heir - Anora and a Cousland King-Consort have no heir
The only potential candidate that can fit into several of those world states is Kieran.
Fergus Cousland, according to lore, is the second closest to the throne that is confirmed to be alive in DAI - potentially the brother in-law to the King/Queen of Ferelden.
Ferelden's succession with Alistair as King hinges on whether or not the Warden was able to cure the blight. Alternatively, it is hinted that he may be more resistant since he has dragon blood in him from Calenhad.
The potential implications of Kieran being the bastard son of the King of Ferelden.
Kieran being used as a political pawn to depose Anora using the Theirin bloodline.
DAI took away whatever destiny Kieran had with the Old God soul â that didnât mean that BioWare had to take away everything else too. Regardless, it doesn't matter. Outside of Redcliffe, the rest of the land has fallen to the Blight - it's unlikely that any of this will ever be brought up again.
2. Did the Warden find a cure?
Unknown. Irrelevant.
Ferelden ended up blighted. Denerim fell. If Ferelden rises from the ashes, it will be without any sign of their influence. Any mention of them will likely be their title alone - no mention of their accomplishments.
3. General Questions about the Landsmeet
What happened to Anora if Alistair is named King? Who rules the teyrnir of Gwaren following the blight?
What happens to Alistair if he's exiled? We know Teagan finds him in DA2 but what happens after?
If Leliana becomes divine does that mean that Connor Guerrin is potentially an heir to Redcliffe?
4. Companion Plot Threads
Morrigan's sisters - the many daughters of Flemeth.
Shale's quest to reverse the process of becoming a golem.
Whatever the hell Nathaniel Howe was going on about when you run into him in DA2 in the blighted thaig.
What, if anything, Avernus leaned from spending a literal age or two studying blighted blood.
5. Zevran's Crusade against the Crows
RIP Zevran's one-man crusade against the Crows and their child slavery ring.
DATV messed up immensely by portraying the Crows as more of a âfound familyâ rather than the horrifically abusive organization it was set up to be.
The very same organization that preys on the weak and disenfranchised - honing them to be tools for the nobles/powerful of Thedas - are now the heroic freedom fighters of Antiva.
The literal decade he spent hunting down the Crows and their leaders is up in flames. No mention in DATV whatsoever.
Wasted a perfectly good opportunity to have a schism in the Crows, with Zevran at the helm of kicking out the antaam, taking in Crows who are are sick of what's happening.
6. The Dwarves of Orzammar
The impact of Bhelen/Harrowmont's reign - ruthless progression verses strict traditionalism
The rumours of an uprising of the casteless dwarves in DAI
Will we ever hear of noble House Brosca or Queen/Lady Rica? Nope.
Will we ever hear of the son that Aeducan can have with Mardy? Nope. (RIP Duncan Jnr - I still love you)
The Anvil of the Void and potential links it may have to the Titans.
No more fine goods direct from Orzammar
The entire caste system has been simplified by Harding in DATV to effectively be: 'surface dwarves' and 'deep roads' dwarves.
7. The Magisters Sidereal / Awakened Darkspawn
According to a codex in the Descent: one went mad, consumed another, and the final magister fled into the Deep Roads.
Corypheous + Codex Magister + the Architect (most likely) = 4/5 magisters remaining? Possibly?
Reminder that it's hinted that there's an eighth Old God that was struck from the records of Tevinter.
The Architect and his Awakened Darkspawn.
No, it was all the elves. They're all dead now anyway. Thanks BioWare.
8. The Guardian and the Urn of Sacred Ashes
"Where did you come from, where did you go? Nobody in Thedas will ever knowwwww."
-------------------------------------------
Dragon Age 2
Dragon Age 2 was pretty self-contained, with most things being tied up in Trespasser or DAI. The worst of the plot points abandoned relate to the companions in the game and the lack of closure/answers about them.
General Questions:
Kirkwalls, apparently, endless line of 'provisional' viscounts and constant political instability since Varric ran off to go after Solas.
According to DA: Absolution the Red Templars are still in Kirkwall...yet the show is set after Trespasser - when Varric is viscount? When he mentions that they threw a parade when getting Meredith out of the Gallows?
Aveline, Varric, Merrill and whoever remains of the Kirkwall crew apparently just allowing red templars take over the Gallows?
What happened to Petrice if she lived?
What happened to Feynriel if he went to Tevinter?
If Hawke lives following DAI - where are they?
I have a whole list of lore that's also been brushed over: the Sundermount, Corypheous, the Band of Three etc... I decided to put them in Part 2 since I feel they fit in more with 'lore obliterated' rather than 'abandoned plot points'.
2. Companions
Merrill's Eluvian:
Merrill spent years fixing an eluvian with a piece of string, a potato, and some gum - managing to actually do it.
And it meant nothing.
Eluvians are now a fast travel hub - all mysticism and awe at this marvel of magic are completely gone. Whatever sacrifices Merrill went through to save her sliver of elven history is meaningless.
Imagine if Merrill's eluvian aided in the fight against Solas - if having it intact gave you an advantage against him. Imagine Merrill weeping as Bellara fixes every other single eluvian in ten seconds with her magical omnitool.
Fenris and Slavery in Tevinter:
DATV utterly trivializing slavery in Tevinter is abominable.
Disregarding everything Fenris went through, everything he ever fought for, and making it something barely touched upon in DATV is insanity.
You wouldn't know there was slavery in Tevinter if the Shadow Dragons didn't drop a line or two about it.
Fenris' entire story of going to help free the slaves is diminished because no one wanted to show the ugly, dark side of Tevinter in DATV.
DATV has retroactively made this choice for him to be so unfulfilling.
Where is Anders?
What happened with Sebastian's crusade against Anders? Was he ever captured? Was he executed? Are you telling me that no templars ever pursued this man fanatically after what happened in Kirkwall?
Does his fate vary if Hawke was friends/romanced him?
Varric appointing a new Viscountâs Keep healer called âBandersâ who just happens to sleep in the same room as Hawke and their children call him âdaddyâ lmao
Does his fate vary according to who is Divine? Vivienne hunts him down, Cassandra puts him on trial, while Leliana pardons him?
How does he react to Leliana abolishing the Circles? How much does he weep when the rebellion fails and the mages are destroyed? This man instigated the starting event for DAI and drove most of DA2's major plot and he's just...gone.
The Hawke Siblings:
From DAI we know that Warden Bethany/Carver are safe, but what happened to them if they're in the Circle?
Give us Knight-Commander Carver and First Enchanter Bethany Hawke, you cowards! Have them dismantle the Gallows and be the shining examples of human decency we know they are.
What happens to them after DAI and the Mage/Templar War is concluded? In a world that can embrace or reject them - how do they find their place?
Varric
Trespasser gave him a satisfying conclusion - he's viscount, he's in his shit hole of a city, he's surrounded by the people that he loves and cares about. He has the chance to truly build up Kirkwall after all the shit its gone through.
It just feels so bitter, so meaningless, that they gave him the end that they did in DATV. Varric should never have been the one to go after Solas - the only reason it was him was because he's a popular character in the franchise and was used to draw interest.
Why not Cole?! Who was literally mentioned in Trespasser as being on hand to help his friends - who has the ability to get through to Solas in a way no one else could?
No proper send off - no acknowledgement from those who loved him as to his fate...Varric was reduced to a marketing gimmick to draw people in who wanted to see if he died or not.
Isabela
Isabela's story was brought to a close in DAI - she became an admiral, got a fancy hat, helped the Inquisition, and kept in contact with those she loved/Hawke if defended from the arishok.
Imagine bringing her back in a terrible outfit, having the most sex/gender positive character misgender another person, and making her part of the group that steals cultural artifacts from others.
The tomb of Koslun and Aveline would like a word with you?!
The entire Lords of Fortune group is also extremely bland? No commentary on the ethics/effects of colonialism/cultural appropriation - because confrontational topics/ideas are not allowed in this game. Just like topics of slavery/indoctrination.
Her entire character just seems to have regressed from DA2. Why bother having her cameo in the game if she's not going to meaningfully contribute/comment on whats happening?
Edit - Thanks to bunnyiscthulhu for reminding me that Isabela's mother sold her into marriage...yet she does nothing when Taash's mother is outright forcing them into a life they don't want. Isabela, who believed that everybody should be free - that no one should be forced into a life they don't want, just...lets it happen to another person?
-------------------------------------------
Dragon Age: Inquisition
What's going to happen to the Red Lyrium that's popped up across all of Thedas?
Ferelden, Orlais, Kirkwall - all areas are reported to have red lyrium on the surface.
What happens to the Red Lyrium in Suledin?
DAI speaks about how they can never stop the spread of red lyrium, only slow it â animals, insects, organisms - whatever life is in the ground is all susceptible to becoming blighted by red lyrium. Suledin Keep in particular was utterly devastated by the Red Templars - what happens to life there?
2. What happened to Corypheous' Inner Circle?
What happened to Samson? How long did he live *if* heâs given the chance to help Cullen? Can something good come from his cooperation?
What happened to Calpernia?
Looking at previous concept art for DATV she was a companion - freeing slaves, gossiping about Samson & Corypheous. Just...what a waste. Any potential insight we could have gotten into Corypheous is gone.
3. The Mage / Templar War:
How does the world vary if you conscripted vs allied with either?
How do the remnants of what faction was not chosen fit into this new world?
How does the world deal with abominations and weird magic shit now? Is an alternative to the Order made if it's wiped out in DAI?
How is Cullen's templar clinic doing? If the templars still exist, how is Divine Victoria changing/adapting the Order to better support mages/templars?
4. Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts:
How do Orlesian politics reflect who was made ruler?
Is Gaspard looking to expand into Ferelden once more? Are the elves being brutalized under his rule like they were by his chevaliers? Does he do away with the grand game like he threatened in DAI?
How does this differ if Briala has collared him? How do his supporters feel that Briala has his balls in a vice?
Do Celene and Briala stay together? Do things improve for the elves and for the culture of Orlais at large?
Do improvements for the elves mean that Solas' arguments to his elven agents are less persuasive?
If Florianne is alive what the hell is going to happen to her? How quickly does she fall on her blade after being forced to wear flat shoes for the rest of her life?
How quickly does shit fall apart if you get all three to cooperate lmao
Friendly reminder that DATV sets up that all of Orlais, except for the Winter Palace has been overrun by the Blight - and that a coup from the Venatori is inevitable, likely resulting in any ruler dying.
5. What is the line of succession in Orlais?!
Why does every noble family in Thedas have no contingency plans for if their head of government dies?!
Part of why we needed to resolve the leadership problem in DAI was because there was no clear, direct heir if Celene died!
Celene has no heir Gaspard has no heir
Florianne planned to frame Gaspard, murdering Celene herself, leaving no clear heir to the throne - Orlais was already in a civil war, the council of heralds/nobles would have all campaigned in their own interests...that was why this was so important!
Orlais shortsightedness and pride in their nation being the greatest in Thedas led to them almost falling in a single night!
6. Here Lies the Abyss:
What are the ramifications of having the Warden's exiled verses remaining in the south?
Trespasser literally states that there's a schism in the Order because some Warden's believe they should touch grass more often and not listen to some bloke up in Weisshaupt for what they do down in the south.
Perfect opportunity to have the wardens remaining in the south mean something! Greater numbers in the south means that there's a greater chance of holding against the blight - while greater numbers in the north can effect if Antiva/Tevinter end up blighted in the first attack!
How does public perception towards the Wardens/King of Ferelden change when they learn they were exiled for committing human sacrifice to demons?!
Give us a warden coup and First Warden Alistair / Blackwall, you cowards!
7. The Well of Sorrows:
What was the point of drinking Mythal's bathwater?!
It's been set up as something that changes you. Bound to Mythal forever?!
Retroactively, Solas feels like he's going mental about nothing! One of the few times he ever breaks - he begs you not to - and...for what? Nothing.
DATV does not acknowledge that in the slightest. Such a waste and disappointment of what was made out to be an impactful decision in DAI.
Imagine if the Inquisitor drinking from the well made us forced to fight against them during the fight with Solas - imagine if Solas, in a world state who hated the Inquisitor, used them as a puppet! Just like the envy demon in DAI - and no one notices until its too late. Imagine Mythal herself, wanting Solas to go through with his plan - (or one of the other evanuris) using an Inquisitor/Lavellan he loved as a puppet - imagine the horror he feels as another one of his friends is reduced to nothing more than a mindless slave of the evanuris once more. Imagine the devastation as he watches Lavellan lose all sense of self - perhaps swaying him to, maybe, not go through with his plan?! Imagine having Cole come back to help save the Inquisitor - or Solas begging Rook to save them.
8. DLC Implications:
What happens if Hakkon is not slain? What happens to Southern Ferelden and the Avaar?
How does the rest of Thedas react to the truth of what happened at Red Crossing and the Dales? How do they react to learning that Inquisitor Ameridan - First Inquisitor and leader of the Seekers - was a dalish, elven mage?
What happens if you do not save the mines in the Descent DLC? How badly is Orzammars economy crippled? There are already rumours of riots occurring within Orzammar - it this enough to push the caste system over the edge?
9. Elven Uprising and the War with the Qun:
The elven uprising that was implied to be occuring all over Thedas as a result of years of oppression, systematic abuse, and Solasâ influence? What happened to it?
Where are the agents of fen'harel?!
It was set up that Solas was planning to use this rebellion as a smokescreen for his plans - the elves, all rebelling for good reason, rallying to his cause while Solas planned to restore the world that once was. The rest of Thedas would only see an elven uprising, not knowing the true face behind it until it was too late!
The war between Tevinter and the Qun?!
Everyone conveniently forgetting that the Qun literally attempted to assassinate every noble family in Thedas? Why was there no exalted march because of this? This should have destroyed any accord between the chantry and the qun. There would absolutely be blood for this â Tevinter could have attacked the Qun and all of Southern Thedas would have applauded - no one would have differentiated between extremist qunari and the normal qun, especially not after Kirkwall.
The implication at the end of Trespasser that we could convince Solas to abandon his plans? Him saying that he welcomed giving us the chance?!
The difference that the Inquisitors friendship, love, or hatred could have in either convincing Solas to take another path or damning him to go ahaead with his plan, no matter the cost?
Have our decisions in previous games matter! How we treated the elves - if we worked to better their lives or 'put them in their place' - can be used to convince him that the world can change! Have the ripple effects of these decisions be seen when the elven gods return, blighted - does the world turn against the elves, hardening Solas, or does the world defend the elves from those who would blame them?
Why was Sandal in the Crossroads?! Where is Bodahn?!
10. Divine Victoria!
How does the world of Thedas change with Leliana, Cassandra, or Vivienne at the head of the chantry?
How does Tevinter react to having a mage divine?!
Do relations change between both nations because of this?
Leliana allowing elves, dwarves, and even qunari to join the Chantry! Leliana also allowing members of the chantry to get married if she's romanced by the warden.
What happened to the Seekers? Are they being rebuilt?
Does the chantry inform the masses, the rest of the mages, that they can CURE tranquility?!
If either Leliana or Cassandra was romanced - what are the implications that may have on the chantry?
-------------------------------------------
No wonder the writers insisted that none of the past choices would have an impact on Veilguard - they literally went scorched earth on everything we ever did.
Ferelden is blighted - any legacy of the warden is gone.
Kirkwall is destroyed - any impact Hawke had is gone.
The hard won peace/order of the Inquisition was rendered meaningless since every single place that you went to and helped is now destroyed by the blight.
Orlais' ruler will likely be assassinated by the venatori who are plotting a coup with the nobles - making whomever you chose obsolete.
AND IT WAS ALL THE WORK OF THE MAGICAL ILLUMINATI FROM ACROSS THE SEA???
#bioware critical#dragon age#datv spoilers#datv critical#dragon age the veilguard#dragon age spoilers#Never forget that bioware destroyed the last three games in a codex entry and line of dialogue#I absolutely adore Dragon Age#seeing it come to this is unbelievable#Duncan didn't die for this#rip kirkwall#rip ferelden#rip orlais#datv#what a disaster of a game#it comes across as genuinely spiteful how much the game seems to hate the fans of the previous entries#dragon age veilguard#maker take the wheel#edits to make it more clear and remove some of my rambling lol.#edit 2 to add in sandal!#edit 3 to add in more points I forgot about Divine Victoria#edit 4 to add in Varric and Isabela rip#edit 5 to make the title grammatically correct - grammer isn't my strong suit lol

What We Learned from Flying a Helicopter on Mars
The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter made history â not only as the first aircraft to perform powered, controlled flight on another world â but also for exceeding expectations, pushing the limits, and setting the stage for future NASA aerial exploration of other worlds.
Built as a technology demonstration designed to perform up to five experimental test flights over 30 days, Ingenuity performed flight operations from the Martian surface for almost three years. The helicopter ended its mission on Jan. 25, 2024, after sustaining damage to its rotor blades during its 72nd flight.
So, what did we learn from this small but mighty helicopter?
We can fly rotorcraft in the thin atmosphere of other planets.
Ingenuity proved that powered, controlled flight is possible on other worlds when it took to the Martian skies for the first time on April 19, 2021.
Flying on planets like Mars is no easy feat: The Red Planet has a significantly lower gravity â one-third that of Earthâs â and an extremely thin atmosphere, with only 1% the pressure at the surface compared to our planet. This means there are relatively few air molecules with which Ingenuityâs two 4-foot-wide (1.2-meter-wide) rotor blades can interact to achieve flight.
Ingenuity performed several flights dedicated to understanding key aerodynamic effects and how they interact with the structure and control system of the helicopter, providing us with a treasure-trove of data on how aircraft fly in the Martian atmosphere.
Now, we can use this knowledge to directly improve performance and reduce risk on future planetary aerial vehicles.
Creative solutions and âingenuityâ kept the helicopter flying longer than expected.
Over an extended mission that lasted for almost 1,000 Martian days (more than 33 times longer than originally planned), Ingenuity was upgraded with the ability to autonomously choose landing sites in treacherous terrain, dealt with a dead sensor, dusted itself off after dust storms, operated from 48 different airfields, performed three emergency landings, and survived a frigid Martian winter.
Fun fact: To keep costs low, the helicopter contained many off-the-shelf-commercial parts from the smartphone industry - parts that had never been tested in deep space. Those parts also surpassed expectations, proving durable throughout Ingenuityâs extended mission, and can inform future budget-conscious hardware solutions.
There is value in adding an aerial dimension to interplanetary surface missions.
Ingenuity traveled to Mars on the belly of the Perseverance rover, which served as the communications relay for Ingenuity and, therefore, was its constant companion. The helicopter also proved itself a helpful scout to the rover.
After its initial five flights in 2021, Ingenuity transitioned to an âoperations demonstration,â serving as Perseveranceâs eyes in the sky as it scouted science targets, potential rover routes, and inaccessible features, while also capturing stereo images for digital elevation maps.
Airborne assets like Ingenuity unlock a new dimension of exploration on Mars that we did not yet have â providing more pixels per meter of resolution for imaging than an orbiter and exploring locations a rover cannot reach.
Tech demos can pay off big time.
Ingenuity was flown as a technology demonstration payload on the Mars 2020 mission, and was a high risk, high reward, low-cost endeavor that paid off big. The data collected by the helicopter will be analyzed for years to come and will benefit future Mars and other planetary missions.
Just as the Sojourner rover led to the MER-class (Spirit and Opportunity) rovers, and the MSL-class (Curiosity and Perseverance) rovers, the team believes Ingenuityâs success will lead to future fleets of aircraft at Mars.
In general, NASAâs Technology Demonstration Missions test and advance new technologies, and then transition those capabilities to NASA missions, industry, and other government agencies. Chosen technologies are thoroughly ground- and flight-tested in relevant operating environments â reducing risks to future flight missions, gaining operational heritage and continuing NASAâs long history as a technological leader.

You can fall in love with robots on another planet.
Following in the tracks of beloved Martian rovers, the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter built up a worldwide fanbase. The Ingenuity team and public awaited every single flight with anticipation, awe, humor, and hope.

Did I fucking stutter??
btw, Nicktoons Unite nation, Timmy has heat vision. He wished for it in a season one episode and then an episode in a later season confirmed he still has it. Just putting that out there because I think it would be really funny for him to use it in front of the others with no warning.

And so it makes sense that these are now the places where fascism grows; thatâs what these places were designed for. The suburbs were invented as a reactionary tool against the womenâs liberation and civil rights movements. The US government, in concert with banks, landowners, and home builders, created a way to try and stop all that, by separating people into single homes, removing public spaces, and ensuring that every neighborhood was segregated via redlining. The suburbs would keep white women at home, and would keep white men at work to afford that home. These were explicit goals of the designers: âNo man who owns his house and lot can be a Communist,â said the creator of Levittown, the model suburb. âHe has too much to do.â The reason Target has become the locus of todayâs particular right-wing backlash is the same reason countless viral TikToks attempt to convince women that theyâre at risk of being kidnapped every time theyâre in a parking lot. Itâs the reason why true crime is one of the most popular podcast genres in America, and why many refuse to travel without a gun by their side and shoot people if they set foot on their driveway.
[...]
It is of course true that these mass hysterias are part of an organized right-wing movement that is attacking human rights across the countryâthrough legislation banning abortion, gender-affirming care, and books, and making it illegal for educators to teach American history accurately. But the shape this movement has taken is not coincidental; it is in fact the product of the unique shape of public life in America, or lack thereof. Suburbanites do not have town squares in which to protest. They do not have streets to march down. Target has become the closest thing many have to a public forum. We often hear that urban areas are more liberal and suburban ones more conservative, and weâre often told that this is because of race. That may be partly true, though cities are whiter than ever and suburbs more diverse than ever. Instead, it may be that suburbanism itself, as an ideology, breeds reactionary thinking and turns Americans into people constantly scared of a Big Bad Other. The suburban doctrine dictates that public space be limited, and conflict-free where it exists; that private space serve only as a place of commodity exchange; that surveillance, hyper-individualism, and constant vigilance are good and normal and keep people safe. It is an ideology that extends beyond the suburbs; it infects everything. Even cities, as Sarah Schulman writes in The Gentrification of the Mind, have become places where people expect convenience and calmness over culture and community. What is a life of living in a surveilled and amenity-filled high-rise and ordering all your food and objects from the Internet to your door if not a suburban life? To make matters worse, the people who have adopted this mindset do not see it as an ideology, but as the normal and right state of the world; they, as Schulman writes, âlook in the mirror and think itâs a window.â So when anything, even a gay T-shirt, disrupts their view, they become scared.

Nyctophobia
Noun: An extreme fear of the dark. Children or adults may have Nyctophobia if they are afraid to be left alone in darkness
Ch.1
Pairing: Logan Howlett x F!Mutant!Reader
Warnings: None as of yet, but we'll get there ;)
Word count: 9.2k
A/N: RIGHT FUCKERS ITS TIME. i don't think i've written a fic this long in goddamn years but here we are. DEFO ooc Logan and also timeline what timeline? Kitty is older than the rest of the students cuz i love her and i said so. reader's mutation is currently shadow-walking but that'll develop as we go on so slay boots. also I have no concept of word limits sooooo 9k chapter let's fucking go
How long had it been? Six months? A year? Two years? Honestly, you couldnât recall. It felt like it had been forever since olâ Charlie had sent you travelling the continent. Sure, it had been your idea to try and find mutants before they experience the most traumatic event of their lives, but you didnât think heâd send you, and certainly not immediately. Though you were glad he did, you didnât think Scott would make as good an impression as you could.
But, now you were back. Thank fuck. You could finally rest your weary legs and put down your heavy-as-shit bag. And at least now you could work on developing your mutation. Shadow walking. Or at least, it is now. You thought that was the extent of what you could do, just disappear and reappear whenever and wherever there happened to be a shadow cast on the ground. Or on a wall. Or anywhere really. But, Xavier had gently suggested that, perhaps, those shadows could be manipulated one way or another. You wished to fuck you knew how because your bag was all but cutting right through your shoulder.
Your boots crunched against the gravel as you took a deep breath, making your way inside. It was nice to notice nothing had changed. The lawn was still neatly mowed, brickwork hadnât aged a day. It smelt like comfort. It smelt like home. But before you could even knock on the door, at least being courteous enough not to slip through the shadows, the oak burst open and two unidentified arms had wrapped themselves around your neck in one of the most warming hugs youâd ever received, accompanied by a high pitch squeal.
You knew instantly who that would be. Brown hair spilled across her shoulders, smelling faintly of lavender. âHey Kitty,â you grinned, dropping your bag to return her tight embrace. It truly did feel like forever.
âIâm so happy to see you itâs been years! We thought you were never coming back! Scott thought youâd died and Charles wasnât telling us, Logan didnât think you even existed and that we were all lying, Jean thought youâd just got sick of this place and dipped, it was carnage!â She rambled, her deep brown eyes sparkling slightly. You had to take a minute to actually comprehend what the fuck she was saying before your lips split into a broad smile.
âWell, I can tell you that Iâm not dead, at least not yet, and I do very much exist and I am not sick of this place despite what Jean may think. Andâ wait whoâs Logan?â Your brain had only just caught up with the fact that Kit had mentioned a name completely unfamiliar to you. Just how long had you been gone?
âOh, right yeah. A new teacher,â Kitty kept one arm around your shoulder as she guided you back inside, stopping only when you realised your bag was still left discarded by the front door. âHe uh, sorta took your position as PE and combat professor⌠sorry.â She looked genuinely apologetic, whilst internally, you couldnât be more grateful. You always thought you werenât ever cut out to teach, and whilst you sometimes enjoyed it, you were always too worried about the kids being hurt.Â
âIâm hurt, a girlâs gone for a year or two and you replace her? What kind of school is this?â you cracked a smile, Kittyâs face morphing from remorse to relief. She really thought youâd be upset? You were touched. âAnyway, what time is it? Where is everyone? I thought classes stopped atââ You were cut off abruptly upon entering the lounge.
âWelcome back!â you covered your face at the chorus of voices, laughing behind your hands before clutching your heart dramatically.Â
âChrist! Youâve all just knocked five years off my life!â you grinned, faces both familiar and unfamiliar laughing and smiling just to see you.
âTheyâve been looking forward to this for days. Ever since rumour of your return started circulating, theyâve been pestering us nonstop for a date. Eventually, someone caved,â You didnât need to see Scottâs eyes in order to know he was giving Kitty a pointed look behind his glasses. You looked back to see her looking sheepish.
âYeah well⌠they can be really persuasive.â She shrugged, taking your bag off your shoulder and placing it out of the way. You sighed at the loss of weight, rolling your joint slightly.Â
âItâs good to see you,â Scott pulled you in for a brief hug, clapping your back once before pulling back, letting the rest of your friends and pupils make their way over. You were consumed by various arms of embraces, questions about your travels, introductions to new students, reminiscing with old students. It was quite possibly the best moment youâd had since you left. But a face caught your eye at the back of the crowd. A young girl, with the same dark brown hair you remember, only now a streak of brilliant white framed her face.
You made your way over, shuffling through the crowd, clasping hands and shoulders with people you knew before finally getting to her.
âHey you,â you smiled gently, remembering how timid and easy to scare she used to be. You were caught off guard completely by her sudden bright smile.Â
âHey.â
âHow longâve you been here? I didnât actually think youâd listen to me to be brutally honest with you, thought youâd just shrug it off and continue your own path,â you were relieved to see she had listened to what youâd said two years ago. Youâd urged her down this path, to find the school. Youâd already known Charles would take her, it was just a matter of her taking herself here.
âUh⌠about thatâŚâ youâd only seen a smile that sheepish on Kitty. You cocked a brow, head tilting to the side slightly before a hand on your shoulder caused you to whirl. But it was just Ororo. Clearly, your travels had affected you more than you originally thought.Â
But Storm wasnât looking at you, you could only see the back of her white hair as she frantically waved at someone through the crowd, beckoning them over.
âLogan!â
Ah, you guess that made sense now.
Whoever youâd expected to walk through the crowd, you threw that image out your mental window the moment you saw him.Â
Now you understood why he taught combat and PE⌠he was fucking ripped. White t-shirt leaving nothing to the imagination. The facial hair was an interesting choice, but you couldnât say it didnât suit him. He was very⌠rugged lumberjack looking.
You placed a hand on your hip, brows raised in intrigue as he made his way over. You donât think youâd ever seen a grumpier-looking man.Â
âLogan, this is Phantom,â your eyes slid to Ororo as she used your mutant name.Â
âAh, so you do exist,â his voice seemed a perfect match for the rest of him, just as rough and rugged as the worn jeans he was wearing. You nodded, mouth quirking into a small smirk.
âHeard there was some debate over that, glad I could put it to rest,â you outstretched your hand for him to shake, something you were surprised he actually did, calloused palm encasing your own.
âCan ya blame me?â He asked with a raised brow, dropping your hand after a beat too long. Clearly unaccustomed to civility, judging from his appearance.Â
âGuess not. Youâre also the son-of-a-bitch that stole my position, right?â You asked, wanting to be a lot more serious than you actually were being, but for some reason, you couldnât help grinning slightly.Â
âLanguage!â Storm elbowed you slightly. Guess youâd forgotten how to behave around the kids too.
Logan held his hands up in surrender. âIn my defense, I didnât think you existed,â though he also seemed serious, you thought you could detect something that could be perceived as humour in his hazel eyes. You couldnât keep up your poorly constructed façade anymore, waving your hand as if to physically clear the air between the two of you.
âIâm kidding, you can keep it. In all honesty, I was never really cut out for it.â You shrugged. âBesides, Iâmââ
âSheâs being super modest by the way, she rocked as that professor!â Kitty called from the other side of the room, somehow managing to listen to your conversation. You didnât know how, since the entire welcome party was still chatting way, but you cast her a withering look nonetheless.Â
âSo Iâve heard,â Loganâs eyes slid from Kitty back to you as you scoffed.
âThough, of course, it was purely hypothetical, since I didnât exist and all.â You teased, gesturing to your very much existing self. You silently triumphed over the fact you managed to drag a small smile out of him, realising that making this man pull any other expression other than irritation was something to be proud of.Â
You hadnât realised how completely caught up in the introduction youâd been before you noticed the girl still standing next to you, eyes flicking between you and Logan with a small smile pulling at the corners of her lips.Â
âAnyway,â you continued pointedly, âyou were saying? So you didnât come to find this place?â your head tilted again slightly in confusion. âHow did you end up here?â
Rogue looked from you to Logan, whoâs eyes were still trained on you. You looked between them. âNope, still confused. How didâŚ?âÂ
âWell, after you found me, I did carry on my own path, which led me to some shady bar where Logan found me,â she explained quietly.
âMore you found me but sure.â He shrugged. You could tell there was some kind of bond between them, one you could recognise was only built through trauma. Youâd heard a little of what happened with Eric through Charlesâ telepathic link, but he always reassured you to continue what you were doing. But you often wondered what could have happened if youâd returned.Â
âSo, you brought her here?â You asked, trying to prompt the story forward. Honestly, you wanted to know how heâd succeeded where youâd failed. You could be incredibly persuasive when you wanted to be, but Rogue was stubborn on another level.Â
âMe? Nah, didnât know this place existed at that point.â
âSeems to be a common theme with you,â you couldnât help the subtle teasing grin spreading across your face, nor your laugh as he rolled his eyes skyward.
âNever gonna live that down, am I?â
âNot whilst Iâm still breathing,â you winked, before turning your attention back to Rogue and completely missing the way his features shuddered slightly. âSo howâd you get here if tall, dark, and broody over here didnât know about this?âÂ
âTall, dark, andâ what?â He asked, bewildered.
Ororo snorted in amusement, before stepping in. âThat would be us. Weâd been tracking another mutant, Sabretooth, and he just so happened to be tracking Logan, or so we thought at the time. We found Sabretooth, and these two at the same time. Brought them both back.âÂ
You nodded in understanding, now finally having got through the whole story. Well, maybe not the whole story, you knew there were details you definitely were missing, but at least you got the jist.
âI see. Glad it wasnât my lack of persuasive skills then. Though I guess a life or death situation isnât much better. Howâs your mutation coming along?â you asked, only now noticing the black, elbow-length gloves she was wearing. Ah.
âStill hard to control, but Iâm getting better at it!â She looked genuinely enthusiastic about her mutation, so much so that it almost brought a tear to your eye. When youâd met her two years ago, you didnât know if she even wanted help. Sheâd been so lost in her despair and self-loathing that you didnât think she had long left with the way her mental health was going. So to see her so happy, your throat closed up slightly.
âIâm glad, I really am. You deserve this, Rogue. All of this,â you gestured to the room around, to the friends sheâd made, to the haven sheâd found.
âOh, my nameâs Marie. Guess I didnât tell you before.â She shrugged, and you had to laugh to stop yourself from crying.Â
âMarie it is.â Her story touched your heart, and to see she managed to get her happy ending⌠fuck you were so close to crying. You had to change the subject before you broke down in front of these people. âOh hey, is my room still the same? Wouldnât mind freshening up a little, been a long journey.â Two birds with one stone. You could leave the situation and cry in your bathroom whilst taking a shower so you didnât smell like the wrong end of a skunk. Perfect!
âUhâŚâ Storm started.
âAbout thatâŚâ Kitty continued, coming over to stand alongside Storm. You looked between them, before shooting a glance to Logan who seemed to be showing absolutely no remorse.
âYour bedâs real comfy, bubâ he smirked, and you gaped.
âYouâre fucking kidding me?â
âLanguage!â both Ororo and Kitty said at the same time, and you winced.
âFuck, sorry. Shit! Argh!â you gave up, throwing your hands in the air. âIâm not letting any of you off the hook. This is betrayal at its finest! Giving him my position I can handle, but my damn room? Thatâs shocking behaviour from the both of you!â You pointed at them accusingly, shooting a glare to the man next to you who was doing nothing but lowly chuckling. You breathe out a sigh. You had the best room in the whole mansion. Or at least you did, before Muscles McGee stole it from you.
âDonât blame those twoâ Jean placed a calming hand on your shoulder. âwe didnât have another room made up when these two arrived. It was supposed to be temporary, butââ
âThe view was too nice to pass up on,â Logan interjected. You realised he probably thought it was his turn to tease you. You knew that view was nice, it was overlooking the entire grounds behind the school. And whilst you were going to sorely miss it, you werenât so heartless that youâd take it back from him. Besides, in a weird way, you felt like you owed him. He found Marie, and whatever transpired between them, she seemed happier now. You guessed you maybe had him to thank for that.
âYeah yeah, alright fine. I concede. Where am I then?â you asked Jean, who broke into a broad smile.
âYouâre in the one above, still got the same view, donât worry,â she elbowed you slightly. That wasnât so bad actually. Same view, same side of the mansion, just one story up? You breathed a sigh of relief. Yeah, you could do that.
âGood enough, Iâm still mad about it though.â Your eyes narrowed at four of them, Logan included, before cracking your neck in preparation to take your bag all the way up the stairs.
Kitty clapped her hands excitedly, and you raised a brow in suspicion. âWhatâs got you so giddy?â you asked as she once again slid her arm across your shoulders, guiding you back towards the door.Â
âOh nothing, just glad you're home. Itâs been kinda boring without you.â You laughed at that. With everything thatâs been going on, you didnât think any of them had time to be bored. But you appreciated the thought nonetheless.Â
Eyeing your bag on the ground, there were times when you really wished your mutation involved some kind of super strength, because as happy as you were to be home and have a room just above your old one, you really didnât want to lug that thing all the way up. And all the damn lights were on, so slipping up through the shadows was a no-go. You blew out a breath in preparation, rolling your shoulder once again, before you were stopped by a broad hand landing on your arm.
âI got it,â Loganâs voice weaved butterflies through your stomach. You hadnât realised he was behind you before he was leaning down next to you and effortlessly slinging the bag over his own shoulder.
For the second time that afternoon, you gaped up at him, left almost speechless.Â
âSuper strength?â Was all you could say, hoping to Jesus he knew what you were asking. You watched his features morph from confusion to amusement as he shook his head slightly.Â
âNah, not quite.â
âThen how the fuââ you were reminded of the children present by a sharp elbow to the ribs from Kitty. ââuuun. How fun.â you gave up on your question, much to his mirth. The sight had your brain short-circuiting. You wouldnât deny he was good-looking. Youâd be fucking crazy to deny that. But there was something else hidden under all those knowing smirks and sharp glances. Something that you wouldnât mind uncovering.Â
Deciding that was a quest for another day, you turned abruptly on your heel, making your way to the staircase before once again stopping in your tracks. This was starting to get on your nerves a little. However, any irritation soon died as you finally saw Professor Xavier.
âAh, I wondered whether the commotion was your return.â
You snorted a laugh. âNo, you didnât. You absolutely knew it was my return.â You quipped back, earning yourself a laugh from the man.
âAs quick as ever. And I see youâve met our Wolverine.â Charles nodded to Logan next to you, and you turned to him in bemusement.Â
âWolverine? Seriously?â you asked, laughing at his shrug. âCanât think whyâŚâ your sarcastic jab paired with your pointed looks from his hair to his body brought another amused smirk from the man.Â
âI thought you two would get along. Get yourself settled back in and meet me in my office and your earliest convenience.â You nodded back to Xavier, unable to take a moment to process what he meant when he said he thought you and Logan would get along before Kitty began dragging you towards the stairs.
âCâmon! Youâre gonna love it!âYou were slightly worried about what it was but followed her nonetheless.
Logan had to admit, he didnât mind carrying your bag up four flights of stairs. It wasnât the worst way to spend his afternoon. And as much as he wasnât the kind of guy to stare at a womanâs ass, he wasnât mad that he was behind you.Â
Everything heâd been told about you had been proven correct. At least, everything heâd seen so far. Whether or not you could hold yourself in a fight was up for debate, but everything else, your wit, your charm, heartbreaking kindness, humour⌠it was all right there in front of him.Â
Literally.
Heâd lost count of how many times heâd had to bite back a smile or a laugh, stunned by the fact that you actually managed to break through and pull both from him. Even now, as you paused before the landing that lead to your old room and sighed wistfully, had had to stop himself grinning. And he was glad you turned back around quickly after throwing him a pointed glare over your shoulder because that was another smile he was struggling to rein in. Fuck, how did you do it? Heâd only known you for half an hour and heâd displayed more expression than he had in his whole two years of being here.Â
He was in huge trouble.Â
The stairs finally flattened out to the top floor landing, Kitty still leading the way down the corridor until the final room. It was isolated, like his one floor below, and he guessed you must like it that way. Which he thought strange. The way you were with others, he hadnât exactly pegged you for being someone who liked her space. But then again, heâd only known you for thirty minutes.
He had to remind himself of that.Â
âHere we are!â Kitty grinned excitedly, stepping to the side to let you open the door yourself. Logan knew what youâd find behind the wood. Heâd helped set it up after all. Some twisted guilt forced him into helping. At least, thatâs what he told himself.Â
You eyed Kitty suspiciously, before twisting the handle on the door, pushing slightly to reveal what she was so excited about.Â
If Logan was being honest, your expression was worth all the consuming guilt heâd felt by taking your room. A smile of pure, unadulterated awe wiped all thought from his mind, your eyes were practically glowing.
âYou⌠Kitty, you didnât need to do this,â You looked back to the giddy girl and pulled her into a tight hug. Everything you remembered was here. Your posters, fairy lights, and every single plant youâd nourished and grown made your room look like a rainforest. The light in the ceiling had been covered by patterns to ensure there was always shadows cast somewhere, whether it be floor, wall, or ceiling.Â
âIt wasnât just me! I employed help,â Kitty smiled, taking the liberties she knew she had to sit cross-legged on your bed. âAnd others offered to help.â
Logan held his breath as he felt your attention shift from Kitty to him, meeting your gaze of sheer wonder.Â
âYou helped?â you asked, taking your bag from his shoulder, though he was almost too caught up in your gaze to notice.
âHere anâ thereâŚâ he muttered, trying to calm himself by leaning against the doorframe, folding his arms across his chest, attempting to escape your eyes by looking around your room.Â
âHere and there? Thatâs such a lie! Heâd heard about your mutation, the shadow-casting thing was his idea!â Kitty grinned excitedly, and you all but choked on the realisation. He did this for you. He didnât even know you, and he did this for you.Â
âKitty, thatâs enâoof!â Logan barely had time to react before your arms were around his neck, your chin resting on his shoulder. Your scent hit him like a truck, and it was nothing like how heâd imagine it. Not that he had imagined itâŚ
âThank you,â you whispered earnestly, and any guard heâd put up previously melted away. He didnât exactly return your embrace, but his hands somehow found your waist as you pulled back, keeping your arms across his shoulders. âMaybe I can forgive you for stealing my old room now. Oh! And my job. And not believing I exist,â your grin held more mischief than he ever thought possible, but now you were back to teasing, he felt his thoughts return.Â
âAnythinâ else?â He asked, mirroring your expression.
âNot yet, but Iâm sure Iâll think of something,â was it Loganâs sudden and overactive imagination, or did your eyes just flicker to his lips?
Was it the sudden physical contact that made your body hum this way, or was it just the fact that he could bench-press three of you? You didnât care, and somehow, you didnât think he did either.Â
Until very suddenly and very abruptly, you did care. You stepped out of his hands far too quickly for his liking, your arms falling back by your sides. Though you didnât look like you regretted anything.Â
âI really appreciate this, from both of you. And whoever else helped. This is⌠well itâs better than what I was imagining,â you gestured to the room around you. It truly was perfect for you. Theyâd really outdone themselves. Heâd really outdone himself. And you couldnât help the warmth that spread from the centre of your chest to your limbs. You wanted to know more about him. âWhatâs your mutation, by the way? You never said,â you asked before you could stop yourself, and Logan blinked in surprise.
Holding his fist up, he flexed the tendons holding his claws. He no longer winced when his knuckles split. No longer grimaced as he sliced through his own flesh, though watching your face did cause him to worry just a little.Â
You held your silence for a moment, not really knowing what to say. That looked painful as fuck, but you felt that asking might make it worse. âI seeâŚâ was all you said, before it hit you. âWolverine! I get it now. It made sense before but now it actually fits!â You exclaimed, chuckling at his confusion.Â
âWhaddya mean it made sense before?âÂ
âDonât think too much into it,â you winked again, and Logan swore his heart stopped.Â
âYeah, alright Phantom.â He cocked a brow at the playful narrow of your eyes before you melted into the shadows right in front of him. Heâd been made aware of your mutation, having overheard Jean using both you and Kitty as examples of phasing mutants, but to actually see it for himself? He couldnât say he wasnât impressed. He glanced around the room, retracting his claws as he looked for where you could have gone.Â
âGet it now?â
Logan whipped around to see you standing behind him, arms folded across your chest, a mischievous grin plastered across your features.Â
You always felt a sense of freedom when you released yourself into the shadows, like holding yourself in this corporeal state was somewhat of an effort. But letting yourself be free, to move like liquid amongst the darkness, it was like refueling a beaten truck.Â
Loganâs lips quirked into a smile as he nodded once. âGot it,â the silence lingered once again, some kind of charge energy crackled in the space between the two of you before he cleared his throat. âKitty, we shouldâ the fuck?âÂ
You popped your head to the side, peering around Logan to see the space on your bed Kitty used to be sitting in was now completely empty. âGuess she left,â you shrugged. âOr she never existed.â That earned you a flick to the forehead from Logan, and you laughed, batting away his hand. How long had it been since youâd felt this comfortable with someone this quickly? Either it had been years, or never.Â
âIâll leave you to it,â he smiled, this time completely unrestrained. And fuck was he gorgeous. But you had to remember this was a man youâd just met.Â
He had to remember this was a woman heâd just met.
âYeah, thanks. Iâll uh, see you later?â You didnât mean for your voice to sound so hopeful at the end, but honestly? It was worth seeing him turn back to you with that same smirk youâd seen countless times already.
âSure.â He said, before closing the door.Â
You sat heavily on your bed, your head in your hands. âWhat the fuck?âÂ
Little did you know, Logan was having a similar reaction right outside your door, his back against the wood as he pinched the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger. âWhat. The. Fuck?â
Having almost drowned yourself in the shower, using that shampoo youâd missed so dearly on your travels, youâd changed clothes into something a lot more comfortable, a loose pair of sweats and a spaghetti strap tank top, before heading down to Xavierâs office where heâd just spent the last ten minutes explaining his plans to further your mutation. And to be completely honest with yourself, you hadnât listened to half of it.Â
âSo, in short, your ability, whilst appearing similar to Kittyâs, is actually entirely different. Where Kitty phases through objects, you become those shadows. Your molecules break down completely, unlike Miss Pryde.â He finished his explanation slowly, and you didnât have the heart to tell him you had no idea what heâd just said. Luckily, when conversing with a telepath, you didnât have to.
Charles sighed, rubbing his forehead slightly. âYouâve always said you felt a strain on yourself whilst corporeal, yes?â He asked, and you breathed in relief. Finally, a question you could answer.
âYeah, itâs like Iâm holding water with my bare hands. Or something like that,â you nodded, looking at yourself slightly curiously. âSo, Iâm not like Kitty?â you clarified, looking back up the the professor, who shook his head.Â
âIâm afraid not. We were mistaken before, simply assuming you were just another phasing mutant. But Jean ran some tests on your blood, and it was quite remarkable.â Youâd almost forgotten the woman was in the room until she cleared her throat, her red hair pulled up in a tight ponytail.Â
âI think you describe it perfectly. Your molecules are being held together, more or less, by string, or so to speak. Not real string, but I think you understand.â You nodded. You actually did understand, because thatâs how you constantly felt. It was, however, incredibly unnerving. What would happen if that string frayed? Or worse, fucking snapped altogether? Sensing your distress, Charles covered your hand with his own.
âMy dear, thatâs why we brought you back. Weâve been incredibly lucky so far, and clearly, you have an innate ability to control the string. Itâs led us to believe that your abilities donât stop at shadow walking.â He looked at you with understanding as you took this all in. Heâd mentioned to you previously that he thinks you could do more.Â
âShadow manipulation, right?â You asked though the question was rhetorical. You knew thatâs where they were going with this. Charles glanced at Jean who nodded in confirmation.Â
âEssentially, yes. We think you could pull shadows from an already existing cast and wield them to your heartâs content. In⌠theory.â She hesitated, and you blew out a breath.
âBut in practice?â
âIn practice⌠honestly we donât know. It will be a learning curve for all of us, to be blunt.â You nodded a little numbly. Youâd only just returned and already you were being bombarded with hard truths.Â
Once again sensing your distress, Charles cleared his throat. âWell, I think we should continue this discussion tomorrow. Youâve had a long day and perhaps right now isnât the best time to be entertaining new ideas.â He threw another look to Jean and she nodded again, standing from her seat.
You couldnât agree more. This was a lot to take in. Especially since youâd become so comfortable with your mutation, believing that you were just another phaser like Kitty. But now, you were something else completely, something unknown. Even to yourself. It⌠scared you. And you didnât scare easily. Worry? Sure. Impending sense of dread? Absolutely. Fear? Never.
âRight. Thanks, Professor. Iâll uh, see you tomorrow then.â You dipped your head goodbye, before leaving his office and closing the door behind you. Tea. You needed tea. Fuck you needed something stronger than tea, but since this was a goddamn school, alcohol was strictly prohibited.Â
Fuckâs sake.Â
Dragging a hand down the side of your face, you absently made your way to the kitchen and flicked on the kettle. Muscle memory guided you to the drinks cupboard, moving aside the jar of decaff coffee to reveal your personal stash of teabags. Whilst primarily you were a coffee drinker, when it was this late in the evening, you tended to steer clear of the caffeine. You werenât the best at sleeping to begin with, let alone when your mind and body were buzzing.Â
You didnât turn when you heard footsteps behind you, and the scrape of one of the chairs against the wooden floor, too focussed on rifling through the cupboard adjacent to the drinks one for our favourite mug. A gift from Kitty, sheâd had custom-made for the print on the side to say âPhasers Forever!â. It made you a little sad to think about now. But, thankfully you found it, nestled right at the back next to the mug youâd gifted her. Also custom-made, but this just had the image of two hands with their little fingers linked. Youâd made sure the gloves matched the ones you both wore in your suits.Â
Dropping the teabag into the mug, you instantly savoured the scented steam as you poured the hot water, even the aroma calming your slightly frayed nerves. Wow, that meeting had seriously rattled you. Looping the string and tag over the lip of the mug, you turned back to the room, only to almost drop your freshly made drink in surprise.
Logan. Hair slightly damp, in a white v-neck tank, sat at the far end of the table, leaning back in the chair with a bottle of what you could have sworn was larger in his bear paw of a hand. That same fucking smirk pulled at his lips.Â
âPhantom.â He raised his bottle in greeting. You wished you could match his energy, but honestly, you were drained from the day and the meeting. But you tried nonetheless.
âWolvie.â You smiled back, though you could feel it didnât reach your eyes. And clearly, he noticed too, expression shifting from self-assured confidence to slight concern.
âYou alright?â Logan had only known you for less than a day, and he already knew he really didnât like seeing you despondent.Â
âYeah, fine.â It almost pained him physically seeing your eyes remain dull with your liarâs smile. That was something else he realised in that split second.Â
He really didnât like you lying to him.
âUh huh?â Fuck, he definitely knew you were hiding everything. How the fuck could he possibly tell that? He didnât even know you! You sighed heavily, hoping it would help your next half-truth.
âIâm just tired. Long day, lots of emotions. Are you hungry? Iâm starved and was gonna make pasta if you wanted some,â You tried your best to steer the conversation away from how you were feeling. Once again it wasnât exactly a lie. You were starving, having not eaten since this morning, and it was now ten in the evening.Â
Logan knew you turned away quickly so you didnât have to see his suspicion. If you werenât ready to talk about whatever was bothering you, he knew he shouldnât push. But, to his surprise, he found himself wanting to know. He wanted to know what was up, and maybe, just maybe, he could make you feel better. It seemed doubtful, but it was worth a shot. âHow was your meeting with Charles?â
Your shoulders tensed, spine straightening. Gotcha.
âYeah, fine. Just easing me back into life here basically. Nothing earthshattering.â Now that was a flat out lie, and once again you refused to turn around as you brought the kettle over to the tap, filling it to the max line before placing it back on the stand and flicking the switch. You found it easier to lie when you were busy doing something else and making pasta seemed perfect. Crouching to one of the lower cupboards, you pulled out the pack of wholewheat, refusing to eat any of the sugary white bullshit. Unfortunately, the one downside of busying yourself so remarkably well was that you werenât always paying attention to what was going on around you.
For example, Logan walking up behind you to take the packet from your hand and place it on the counter. You turned, realising heâd given you minimal space to move. He was so close you could smell the gel he used in the shower. Woodsy and smoky, like a forest cabin. He smelt fucking great, but to be honest, you were too busy trying to avoid eye contact to care.
âSâthat why you look like your pet just died?â You knew he was trying to be teasing, trying to lighten the mood, trying to create a comfortable environment for you to open up in, but you didnât know him, and he didnât know you. With a deep breath, you stepped to the side and out of his reach, opening the fridge to look for something to make a nice creamy sauce with.
âLook, Logan. I appreciate it, and what youâre trying to do, but at the same time, I donât know you. And you donât know me. So, and I mean this with the utmost respect, fucking drop it. Iâm tired and I have genuinely had a long day, what more do you want me to say?â
Logan blinked. And blinked again for good measure. He wasnât expecting you to be so sharp. He didnât know why he wasnât expecting it, but you really took him by surprise. That seemed to be all you were doing since the moment he met you. Though this one stung a little more than he cared to admit. âThat mightâve been the nicest fuck off Iâve ever heard. But it was still a fuck off.â He shrugged. He knew deep down you were right. You didnât know each other, and maybe was was expecting a little too much from a three-hour friendship. If he could even call it that.Â
âI didnât meanââ You turned back from the fridge just in time to watch his disappearing form leave through the door, hearing his footsteps recede back up the stairs. You cursed inwardly, hating yourself for how you handled the situation. Though, looking at the pasta on the counter, you had an idea as to how to fix some of this.Â
It had been roughly half an hour since heâd left you in the kitchen, recognising you needed space, and in all honesty? Retreating to lick his own wounds. He didnât know why he wanted you to open up so badly. It wasnât like he had a long-lasting friendship with you. He met you today, for fuckâs sake. Only hours ago. Shit, this morning he still didnât think you existed! Logan groaned at the memory of you shutting him down, wishing heâd handled the situation differently, and stopped prodding when he knew he should have. Fuck!
Heâd just managed to resolve to come and talk to you, before there was a thump at his bedroom door, followed by another. That wasnât any kind of fist knockingâŚÂ
With deliberate caution, Logan stood from his bed, shining claws sliding through his knuckles as he approached the door, only for his nerves to be calmed when a familiar scent wafted through the cracks in the door. He didnât dare get his hopes up until he turned the handle, pulling the door open to reveal you, stood before him, two steaming plates of pasta held impressively in one hand, and two bottles of larger in the other, your foot raised to kick the door a third time.Â
âBefore you slam the door, I brought peace pesto pasta, homemade so you know itâs good.â You were honestly surprised he opened the door, though you eyed his claws cautiously. Who did he think it was?
Logan noticed your line of sight, retracting his claws to cross his arms, a brow raised. âPeace pesto pasta?â
You nodded. âHomemade, donât forget.â Logan smiled slightly at the hope in your eyes. âAnd also beer so you physically canât turn me down.â You raised the two bottles in your hand, and he sighed as if you were a nuisance. Unfortunately for him, that couldnât be further from the truth.Â
âHomemade peace pesto, beer, andâŚ?âÂ
You stuck your tongue in your cheek. âAn apology.â You reluctantly admitted, looking anywhere but his face. âCan I come in or are you gonna stare at me all evening? These arenât the most balanced plates, been a while since I was a waitress soâŚâ you mumbled in explanation, earning yourself a quizzical look.
âYou were a waitress?â
âYes and it was a long time ago but we can talk all about it if I can set these down somewhere they wonât fall on your feet,â you said hurriedly, borderline pleading with your eyes for him to let you in. It wasnât as if he was about to say no, there was just something comical about the way you were managing to hold everything in your hands.Â
With a click of his tongue, he gestured for you to enter with his head, closing the door behind you as you set one of the plates down on the window seat, rubbing the red skin of your arm where the hot plate had ever so slightly burned you. He instantly felt bad, crossing the room with the intention to take your arm to look at it before you stuck it into the shadow on the wall, removing it again to reveal your skin pristine again.
âIt wasnât that bad, just uncomfortable,â you shrugged, handing a plate and bottle to him. Logan shook his head at what heâd just seen, giving you a look of âfair enoughâ before taking the plate and beer gratefully. How long had it been since someone cooked for him? Though youâd done it as a peace offering, it still warmed his heart slightly. That and the fact it smelt fucking divine.Â
âIâm sorryâŚâ you started, mindlessly poking your pasta around your plate with your fork after making yourself comfortable on his window seat. He guessed it used to be your window seat, but it still made him happy how comfortable you looked. âThe Professor told me something in the meeting and⌠rattled me, thatâs all,â you shrugged, popping a few pieces of green pasta into your mouth and chewing thoughtfully.Â
Logan decided to wait for you to continue, cracking open the bottle top of his beer with his teeth. Raising a brow as you looked over at him in slightly disturbed awe.Â
âHow did you not just break your jaw?â you asked, flabbergasted at his seemingly endless pool of abilities.Â
âNot much can break it, considering my skeletonâs adamantium.â Logan was starting to like when you gaped at him in shock, admiring the way you jaw went completely slack, eyes wide.Â
âWait, how don't youâ ohhhhhâŚâ It had taken you a while to notice just how much the bed dipped when he sat down. No wonder he was so ripped, he had to be that strong in order to fucking walk around. âAny other secrets you're hiding?â You asked, before instantly regretting the question when his eyes met yours.
âYou wanna talk about keeping secrets now?â He asked curtly.
âWalked into that oneâŚâ
âYeah, you kinda did.âÂ
You sighed, fiddling with the bottle cap of your beer. Not to remove it, just to feel the sensation of the almost serrated edges helped to ground yourself.Â
âYou know about my mutation, the whole shadow-walking thing?â You asked, to which Logan responded with a nod, finally taking a bite of the pasta youâd made. Your heart swelled with pride as he paused, looking from the food to you with an impressed smile. âSo, turns out, itâs nothing like Kittyâs. Itâs not phasing like we originally thought, but something totally different.â You started to explain to an intensely listening Logan. âKitty phases through things. I actually become the shadows I enter. Like, itâs not still my body but just in the shadow, my molecules break down to literally be the shadow,â you could tell he was trying to understand, his head tilting slightly to the side in a way you genuinely found cute. âItâs like, Iâm holding water in my bare hands,â you started to demonstrate, placing your plate and bottle down beside you to cup your hands in front of you. âAnd this, this is my body. My corporeal body. But, when I dive into shadows, that body breaks down,â your cupped hands splayed apart, fingers spread to simulate a liquid splash. Logan nodded thoughtfully through mouthfuls of pasta. âHow Jean explained it was that my molecules are held together with some kind of thread, and I control that thread, but itâs a constant strain⌠Like, I can feel my body being held together. And it just⌠I donât know. It scared me I guess.â
The room fell into silence as you finished your explanation, Logan setting his somehow clean plate to the side, leaning his elbows against his spread knees, beer bottle clasped in both hands. âI uh, donât really understand whatâs scary bubs, sounds like this is an opportunity to develop it, right?â he asked, eyes searching your face for any sign you were reassured.
You sighed, the back of your head softly hitting the wall behind you. âWell apparently weâve been lucky so far, and my control over this string or thread or whatever the fuck is stronger than they thought but⌠I donât know, I guess what first went through my mind was what would happen if the thread snapped. Would I just stop being able to shadow walk orââ
âWould you stop altogether, and be able to do nothing but shadow walk,â Logan finished, realisation dawning on his gruff features. You nodded slightly, not wanting to speak anything into existence.Â
âExactly.â You whispered, staring into your borderline untouched pasta. You honestly didnât know what to do, and you didnât know what could be done. Surely, at this point, it was just a matter of time, right? The thought hit you like a lightning bolt. If it was just a matter of time, you just burdened this poor man, who youâd only met hours ago, with the knowledge that, eventually, you were likely just simply dissolve into nothing, cursed to live forever in the shadows of others. âAnyway, yeah, thatâs why I had a face like, how did you put it? Like my pet just died,â You did your best to imitate his voice, hoping to shit it would lighten the mood of the room, but it only earned you a look of sympathy.
Fucking sympathy. You hated sympathy.
Youâd come in here in the hopes to make things right with him and apologise for how you were earlier, but the one thing you really didnât want, and never fucking wanted, was sympathy. You sighed heavily, preparing yourself for whatever âIâm so sorry this is happening speechâ he was clearly getting ready to spill.Â
But for the umpteenth time in the short while youâd known him, Logan surprised you. Taking your bottle of beer from your side, he cracked the lid off with his teeth, the same as before, before handing it back to you. You, as stunned as you were, managed to take it from his hand, the soft skin of your fingertips brushing the backs of his own. You smiled in resignation, raising your bottle in some tragic excuse of a toast. âTo the inevitableâ you wanted to say, but you physically bit your tongue before taking a long sip of the slightly bitter liquid.
âIt wonât come to that,â youâd forgotten, in the period of silence, that you were waiting for him to say something. You tilted your head in confusion, and it honestly took all of Loganâs willpower not to launch into you and wrap you up in his arms. He really needed to pull himself together. âLook, I was pretty fuckinâ helpless when I came here. And I know you remember the state Marie was in. Neither of us thought we were worth savinâ, but look at us now,â in complete honesty, Logan still didnât think he was worth saving, but that was neither here nor there. âHeâll help ya. Youâll get this under control. And it ainât all bad. He already said you had more control than he thought,â You could feel his eyes search your face as you closed yours. Maybe he was right. Charles had said you had more control over these strings than he thought.Â
Logan was right. That was a good thing.
âWell, weâll see tomorrow. Thatâs when we really start everything. We have another meeting before weâre straight into training, seeing if we can really develop this mutation before I cease to exist. No pressure right?â You half-joked, your lips quirking up into what you hoped was a smile. Or, at least, a lopsided one.Â
Fuck he wanted to kiss you. Kiss you. When the hell was the last time heâd felt like this toward anyone? He hadnât wanted to kiss anyone in goddamn years, and here you were, a woman he didnât even believe existed a few hours ago, waltzing into his life and making him feel things like wanting to fucking kiss you.Â
âI uh⌠ya know I wanted to apologise too.â
Well, that caught you off guard. âWhâ wait what? Why? What for?â you couldnât help firing off questions at speeds you didnât know you were capable of, utter bafflement contorting your features.Â
âYou were right. I donât know you. And you donât know me.â Logan watched as your face transformed from confusion, to hurt, to acceptance.Â
âYeahâŚ. I did say that didnât I? Iââ
âBut,â he interrupted, stopping you mid-sentence. âThat doesnât mean I donât wanna know yaâŚâ Logan almost laughed aloud at how your eyes went comically wide. Did you know how cute you were? When you werenât telling him to fuck off, that is.
âIâ Uh, okay, sure⌠what dâya wanna know?â you asked, hoping to fuck you didnât sound ridiculous. If you didnât, Logan didnât seem to mind or care.Â
âYou can start of by tellinâ me how or where you learned to cook so well,â you scoffed loudly, rolling you eyes. âNah Iâm serious kid, that was fuckinâ great,â Logan leaned against the headboard, an arm positioned behind his head as you too made yourself comfortable again on the window seat, resting your elbow on your raised knee.
âKid? Do you know how old I am?â you asked, smirking slightly. Though you were a little embarrassed, there was no way youâd show it. Kid? Did he seriously think you were that young?Â
âDo you know how old I am?â he retorted, that same self-assured glint dancing in his eye. You peered at him in scrutiny, emphasising how hard you were looking at him by squinting intensely.
âIâd put you at around like, early thirties? Maybe mid? Am I hot or cold?â you asked, kinda hoping he was in the same sort of age bracket as you were. Not for any specific reason of course⌠just for⌠science.
Yeah. For science.
Though your heart deflated slightly at his bark of a laugh. âNot quite. Try mid to late hundred and thirties. Give or take a few years.â Once again you gaped at him, mouth wide open, jaw completely slack. He could get used to that sight. Dangerously used to it. âTake a picture bubs, itâll last longer.â
âB-but⌠howâ? Yâ? Hundred andâ what the fuck?â You couldnât get over it. Though your mind was still reeling, you managed to recover quickly. âWhy you donât look a day over ninety. Youâre in good shape for a fossil, though I was wondering why I was getting a lot of calls from museums recently⌠probably looking for their exhibit back,â you smirked wildly whilst Logan just stared at you, trying his fucking damnest not to let his disobedient lips quirk anywhere other than down.Â
âYa done?â
âIâll probably think of some more. But, in all seriousness, how?â You asked, and Logan couldnât detect anything other than genuine curiosity.
âRegenerative. I heal real quick, but that also keeps my body in good condition. Dunno exactly how old I am, but itâs around hundred and thirty,â he shrugged, and you whistled lowly. âSo?â he prompted, and you looked up.
âSo what?â
âHowâdya make the pasta?âÂ
You snorted in amusement, before launching into an explanation about your brother and how he always had an interest in cooking and had taught you to cook simple things, like how to make a bĂŠchamel sauce, or how to make pesto from scratch. And if you werenât so caught up in your storytelling, you would have noticed Logan drinking in every damn word like he was parched for conversation. Listening to you talk, the cadence of your voice, the way you pronounce every letter and the way you occasionally drop a letter, it was hypnotic. You didnât have an abundance of energy, and whether that was simply because you were exhausted after the day youâd had, or if that was just who you were, he didnât know. But honestly? He didnât really care.Â
As long as you kept talking, that was all that mattered. If he could take your mind off tomorrow, or your situation by letting you ramble about the smallest of things, he would. And he would pretend the whole time like he was doing this for you. And not because, at the end of everything, he liked listening to you.Â
âAnyway, thatâs how you tell the difference between a Thoroughbred and a Quarter Horse. And I will not make that mistake again.â Youâd somehow weaved from topic to topic, the conversation ebbing and flowing for hours, you both taking turns in sharing random stories from your pasts, little anecdotes that gave context to who you both were as people now. And it was only thanks to the brief silence and the conveniently timed chime of the clock did you realise how late it was. Or rather, how early.
It was one in the fucking morning. How the hell did that happen? Your eyes slid back to Logan, who at some point had made himself comfortable on the opposite side of the window seat, and you watched as he had the same realisation. Holy shit.
âI should probablyââ
âLook, you shouldââ
You both started to speak at the same time, before pausing to let the other talk first. It was gross and awkward and cringey but, for the life of you, you couldnât find it in you to care.Â
You stood, gathering your long abandoned, though now empty plate, and crossed the room to grab his from the bedside table. You heard Logan sigh heavily behind you in what you assumed was exhaustion. You couldnât blame the man. Youâd been talking for hours.Â
Logan followed you to the door, holding it open for you as you stepped out into the hallway. You placed the crockery onto the floor, freeing your hands to wrap your arms around his neck in a similar embrace to the one before. Only this time, you felt his strong arms return your hug, wrapping you up tightly against his chest.
âThank you. For letting me talk for hours. You donât need to pretend you enjoyed it, by the way. But thank you all the same.â You stepped back, and Logan leaned against the door frame, crossing his arms over his chest.
âYeah well, you brought peace pesto and beer. How could I say no?â He quipped, and you chuckled lightly. He wasnât about to admit he enjoyed your company far more than he should have done, and he sure as shit wasnât about to admit he wasnât pretending to like it. His eyes softened at your laugh in a way heâd stopped them from doing all evening. âIâll see you tomorrow, yeah?â
You peered up at him, a knowing spark dancing in your iris. You noticed. Of course, youâd noticed. That was almost exactly what youâd said to him earlier. The same hopeful lilt and all.Â
âSure.â Was all you said in return, before picking up the empty plates and bottles off the floor, and turning away to head back down the hallway. You refused to look back, worried that if you did, youâd run straight back to his room and never fucking leave.
But if you had. If you had just turned to look over your shoulder, you would have seen him leaning against the doorway still, eyes following you down the stairs, and lingering still, long after youâd disappeared.
Yeah⌠he was definitely in trouble.

Jimin fic recs 2024 đĽł
Itâs Jiminâs birthday, and of course I havenât forgotten! And even though Iâm not doing my monthly rec lists anymore, Iâd still love and hope to make recs on each memberâs birthday at least đŤś
Therefore, I want to share my ultimate favorite Jimin stories that Iâve read this past year (2023-2024)đ Have I recommended these before? Yes. But I will not stop screaming about these stories because they are so fucking amazing!! I want to thank each and every writer on this list for creating such wonderful stories and art - you are truly amazing ⨠All the fics on this list hold a dear place in my heart đĽšđĽł
âMost of these fics are smutty as hell or contains dark themes, so minors dni.âÂ
If you read anything on this list and you like it, please leave a comment to the writer or reblog the fic, it might seem like a tiny gesture, but it really means a lot for writers and I can guarantee it will put a smile on their facesđ Letâs share and give lots of love!

âThe Airport Couple: P[ass]anger from Hell + Drabble @dovechim & @jimlingss [8K] // pjm x f.reader // e2l, frequent traveler jimin x tsa agent reader // đđđđĽ°
đ as a TSA agent, you expect your job to be relatively easy, most passengers these days follow the rules to the T in order to avoid prolonging their custom checks. But not a certain Park Jimin, who seems to have a problem understanding what 100ml is, or the very simple fact that gadgets must be taken out of the bag, and bomb jokes are strictly off limits. Frequent traveller Park Jimin is your nemesis, but darn is he a cute one.
đ¨ď¸ this is just so fucking hilarious, donât get me started. I laughed from beginning to end đ And itâs still as good as I remember, if not even better??? Like ⨠Iâve highlighted a few of my favorite parts from the fic. I donât want to give too much away, but these lines are just so damn hilarious! Please go read it, itâs one of my faves.
âThe Airport Couple: Park Jiminâs Cock[pit] @jimlingss & @dovechim [12K] // pjm x f.reader // pilot!au, bf2l, coworkers!au // đđĽ°đĽľ
đtalk about Angry Birds, and most people would immediately think of the mobile game app. But within your circle of friends, it stands for something else. Itâs synonymous with Park Jimin, one of the most talented pilots from your batch who also just happens to have anger issues, or in other words, air rage. He is your best friend, but when you get teamed up with him as his co-pilot, you can only pray that things donât go south⌠literally.Â
đ¨ď¸ I remember reading this a few years ago, and I loved it then and I still do ⨠It is incredibly funny, has good banter and dialogue to match. The chemistry between reader and Jimin is just priceless, their friendship is just pure giggles 𼚠Itâs also fluffy and will tug on your heartstrings in the best way possible. Just really, really good and definitely also one of my all-time favorites đ
âCouchsurfer @heartbeatan [6K] // pjm x f.reader // s2l // đĽľđĽ°
đ this was left intentionally blank đŤĽ
đ¨ď¸ omg this was so fucking good! First, really well written and the pacing was lovely, even though itâs short and one night they spend together 𼚠the build up of their tension and their chemistry was off the charts! So impeccably done! Fuck. I loved it ⨠itâs insane how good this story is and Jimin is just so sweet, romantic and nasty 𼾠I canât tell you how turned on I got by the description of how Jimin handled OC, like damn 𼾠this is so fucking good, please donât sleep on the this beauty đ Normally, Iâm not one for one night stands, because I catch feelings for the characters, but this has a lovely ending that I loved - so fucking good! Lol. Can not stop screaming about this one. Please go read it, fuck. PLEASE đ â¨
âThe Devil in His Details @johobi [9.2K] // pjm x f.reader // college!au // đĽľ
đ evil comes in many forms. In this instance, itâs a 5â˛8âł pretty-boy with an even prettier dick. And youâre the form you want him to come in.
đ¨ď¸ I am MIND BLOWN đ¤ŻđĽľ This is one of the dirtiest, filthiest fics Iâve EVER read. Like itâs in the top five, if not even top three! 𤤠It was fucking perfection, the writing, fucking amazing, the dynamic/tension between Jimin and OCâFuck. GOLD. Abso-fucking-lutely one of the very best fanfics Iâve read â¨
âGo Go @inkjam-moon [9.2K] // pjm x f.reader // best friend!au // đĽľđĽ°
đ Jiminâs been your best friend since you were little; but coming from a rich family heâs paid for everything, and he doesnât realize that it hurts you when you canât pay him back for all the presents and vacations. When he becomes CEO of his own successful company, it gets worse because he promised to always take care of you, but when secrets come out on the night of your graduation from university, will Jimin be able to keep his promise?
đ¨ď¸ this was so fucking sweet 𼚠đ their friendship is so precious, and the way that they ended up waiting so many fucking years before telling each other about their feelings for each other 𼚠almost pulled them apart đ really beautiful â¨
âOui @pixieknj [2.1K] // pjm x f.reader // established relationship // đĽľđĽ°đŠď¸
đ almost getting caught with your boyfriendâŚ
đ¨ď¸ this was so good! Short and sweet â¨
âPeaches and Cream @snackhobi [9.1k] // pjm x f.reader // neighbor!au // đĽľ
đ you wouldnât mind your cute neighbour being such a shameless fuckboy if a) the walls werenât so thin and b) he didnât seem intent on adding you as another notch in his bedpost.Â
đ¨ď¸ IâLL NEVER BE ABLE TO LOOK AT PEACHES THE SAME WAY AGAIN 𼾠Thank you very much, this was so fucking hot I think Iâm malfunctioning. And now, Iâve time Iâll eat a peach, or watch other people eat peachesâ Iâll forever think of this story đĽľâ¨
âOur âGet Alongâ Shirt @dreamyjoons [14.2k] // pjm x f.reader // e2l // đĽľ
đ another day, another endless round of you and Jimin bickering. Itâs never ending, all-consuming, and your friends have had enough. Namjoon decides to end it once and for all - with help from a shirt for squabbling toddlers.
đ¨ď¸ JFHKJSFKSDJDHâ This was so fucking hilarious đ The sexual tension between them was SO HIGH 𼾠and when they finally snapped, oh dear God, it was so good! And the whole shit concept, so hilarious and their banter đ AND THE SWEAT??? Iâm weak okay!! So freaking good, I loved it so much and Namjoon and the rest of the gang were just priceless. Jin at the end had me laughing so hard đ¤
âJust a Taste @yoonieper [14.2k] // pjm x f.reader // vampire!au, established relationship // đĽľđŠď¸đ
đ they said having a relationship with a human wasnât a good idea, but Jimin liked you too much to ever let that get in the way. Your relationship was beautiful, yes you didnât know that small important detail about him being a bloodthirsty vampire, but he had it under control. Thatâs at least what he thought, he never would have predicted a droughtâŚ.
đ¨ď¸ FUCK đ This was so fucking good I donât even know where to begin??? The story in itself was so extremely good, whaaat. And Jimin was so nice, and their love for each other, so fucking pure đ This was an emotional rollercoaster and I fucking loved everything about it đ and the smut, God, it was so goodâ I donât know what to say đ And then at the ending, the angst, fuck, I was so afraid if it was going to end just like that, but I was so glad that they found each other again đ This is a new favorite of mine, so good, it was slightly sad at times, like angsty, but the love that the have for each other, FUCK. So so fucking incredible đ Donât mind all the crying, itâs happy tears, I promise đ Also, itâs mostly told in Jiminâs POV, which I just freaking love and it makes the story so good!!!
âHigh on Love @peachypinkygloss [6.4k] // pjm x f.reader // established relationship, racer!jimin // đĽľ
đ Jimin has once again won a race and he takes you out on a ride for the night, taking dangerous but very exciting risks. He should have expected that the rush of adrenaline in your body always turns you into a horny mess.
đ¨ď¸ I am just BLOWN AWAY by the ficâ holy molly, was it dirty? Yes! Needy? Yes! Cute? Yes! Oh and the car racing, love, love, love! Like, everything in this. And the smut đĽľđĽľđĽľ I mean, it was so dirt and needy (yes I know Iâm using the same words, lol), but FUCK. Incredible! Another ont to add to my faves ⨠And a big bonus for the phone messages, because that was fucking hot too!!! đĽľ
âThe Ten Days of Ex-Mas: pt1 + pt2 @kpopfanfictrash [44.6k] // pjm x f.reader // holiday!au, second chance!au, hockey!au, exes to loves // đĽľđĽ°đŠď¸
đ three months following the worst break-up of your life, you finally feel ready to start moving on. The world, it seems, has other ideas when you pick up the phone and find your ex-boyfriend calling. Jimin Park, star right winger of the NHL and (until recently), the love of your life, has a very large problem. Despite the courage he regularly shows on the ice, in his personal life, Jimin is kind of a coward. When you broke up this fall, he could barely admit it. Not to his neighbors. Not to his friends. Not even to his family, who are expecting him home for Christmas. In a desperate plea for more time, Jimin begs you to pretend youâre still dating â and to his surprise, you agree. Faced with a second chance, Jimin is determined not to squander it. If only fixing a relationship were as easy as falling in love.
đ¨ď¸ okay. Okay. Okay. *deep calm breaths* âTHIS IS SO INCREDIBLY GOOD, I truly donât know where to begin! The plot? The hurt/anger? Their chemistry? Their sexiness? Fuck, like everything in this is making it a beautiful masterpiece đ I really love how each of them thinks about what happened with their relationship, are working to get better, though Jimin should have been honest about his intentions for the trip, everything was just so fucking amazing đ I really loved the aspect of self reflection, seeking therapy, working through it and all thatâ really payed of for the characters! Loved it, it was so good đ
âThe Pitfalls of Silk + drabble @ctrlhope [20k] // pjm x f.reader // s2l, hybrid!au, soulmate!au // đĽ°đĽľđđŞ
đ the winter gods are out to get you. That could be the only possible explanation for the series of bad luck tumbling before youâ tropical vacation cancelled, snow locking you inside. Hell, even your shovel broken in half has got to be the gods playing some sort of trick on you. Pulling you along, making decisions for you as they guide you along the red string of fate. Guide you towards the very spider that found his way into your basement. Allowing him to fall into your heart all the same.Â
đ¨ď¸ I truly donât know where to begin with this oneâ damn. It was so fucking amazing!! The world building and writing was perfect and the tension and how their relationship built over time too. Everything is just so exceptional!!! đ And the smut, holy shitâ 𼾠Iâm lost for words đ And their dialogues and thoughts, having both of the povs mixed together just made it so amazing đ I really loved it and this is another clear new one to add to my favorites đđ
âThe Group Project @noona-la-la-la [8k] // pjm x f.reader x kth // roommate!au + threesome // đĽľ
đ Jimin is jealous when his best friend and roommate, Taehyung, has a date with the girl Jimin has a crush on.
đ¨ď¸ fuck this was so GOOD!!! Best friend Tae đ It was so freaking hot and sinful, like????? Jimin watching them, and then Tae just being best friend ever at the end 𼾠Also, the dialogues were so fucking good! I really loved everything in this đ
âJust a Little Bit of Love (is all you really need) @gukyi [4.5k] // pjm x f.reader // s2l, gymnastics/dancer!au // đĽ°
đ jiminâs something of a legend at gymnastics, but suddenly you walk in and turn his whole world upside down. quite literally, might i add.Â
đ¨ď¸ this is so freaking cute and sweet đ¤đĽš Itâs completely SFW, and so so good!Â
âCherry Blossoms @chateautae [12k] // pjm x f.reader // magic!au, mentor!jimin // đĽ°đĽľđŠď¸đŞ
đ despising the lack of offensive capability to your lackluster powers, your father, the schoolâs chancellor, signs you up for lessons with the magic universityâs top-rated guard, park jimin. known to be an intense, reserved man with ruthless skills in battle, you come to learn he not only goes hard in a fight, but goes hard in another ruthless form of artâfucking.
đ¨ď¸ omg đ perfection?? That is what this was! The story and plot is cool and cohesive, the dynamic between MC and Jimin, damn it was hot! She doesnât really believe in herself, but he believes in her, and tries to get her to see her own potential đĽšđĽšđĽšđĽš Cute! But then it gets filthy! And hot! Thereâs rain!!!! Thereâs smut in the rain! What more can I ask for?? ⨠It was just amazing! I loved it! Also all the magic, MCâs ability and then Jiminâs magic! Theyâre almost a contrast to each other, which I also really like! This is hands down one of my all time favorites!!! đâ¨
âBlooming Days @bluekyun [15.3k] // pjm x f.reader // university!au, bf2l, pregnancy!au // đĽ°đŠď¸đĽľđ
đ a typical night for you begins at the library in your favorite chair underneath the lamp in the corner, only to be picked up at 3am by your best friend, Jimin. Despite having slept over in his room several times before, this certain night in Sigma house leads to far more than you ever imagined. But what is to come of your friendship once you reveal those two little lines that will change your lives forever?
đ¨ď¸ ahhhh this was so cute, lovely, fluffy and funny! It was also sprinkled with a bit of angst that made me tear up and scared for a moment 𼺠but the ending was happy 𼰠I really loved it đ
âNever Falling + Forever Falling + Free Falling @yoonia [21k + 30.5k + 22k] // pjm x f.reader // e2l, singer!Jimin, non-idol!au, workplace!au, assistant!reader // đŠď¸đĽľ
đ for Park Jimin, you are everything he will ever needâhis assistant, his housekeeper, his task runner, his fairy godmother. For you, he is more than everything. You have dedicated your life for him and, before you even realised it, your heart belongs to him alone. The only problem is that he is never yours, and you are living in a world that your love for him is nothing more than a fairytale ending. As you are suddenly given a chance to wake up and face the real world, will you be ready to embrace it? Will he be ready to deal with the world without you in it?
đ¨ď¸ this has been on my trl for forever, and then, it was only a one-shot, so color me pleased and pleasantly surprised to find out that this is now a freaking trilogy đ¤Żâ¨ I loved everything in it, and itâs so fucking amazingâ if you have not already read it, you are certainly missing out! This is definitely one of my all time favorites đ
âEldorado @smoochkooks [38k] // pjm x f.reader // gold diggers!au, e2l, slowburn, adventure!au // đĽ°đŠď¸đĽľ
đ not all that glitters is gold but you, qualified gold digger, carrying on your back immense experience acquired all around the globe, came to the city of el paso del conte with one goal in your mind: to hit the jackpot of the eldorado of Texas. and nothing, no tragedies and adversities will stop you from pursuing it. but in every fairytale-like, too-good-to-be-true story, thereâs a catch. this time, it comes in the name of park jimin, annoyingly handsome archeologist, your sworn enemy and biggest rival.Â
đ¨ď¸ this has been on my trl list for some many fucking years đ well, I finally got to read it! And it was amazing, it was so fucking funny! Filled with witty banter, jokes and stereotypical jokes đ World building was so good too! And the smut? Fire 𼾠I really loved it đ
This is my little corner with my own ficsâ I donât write that much anymore (I prefer to read), but it would mean a lot to me if you checked out my work or read it. You donât have to, itâs up to you of course đĽ°
âComing Home (series; completed) [44k] // pjm x f. reader // childhood bf2l, trauma/healing // đŠď¸đĽľđĽ°đđťđ
đ when your best friend, Park Jimin, who youâve had a crush on since forever, suggests you stay at his house to heal and find yourself again after a series of traumatizing events had haunted you for years, you donât hesitate to accept. Within those walls, a safe haven is woven, where wounds can heal and memories find release. As he nurtures your shattered spirit, an unexpected intimacy unfurls, leaving the fragile barrier between friendship and deeper emotions in question - can you keep your feelings hidden?
đ¨ď¸ this is actually the first story I posted on my blog, and the first fanfic I managed to finish writing in ten fucking years. It will forever have a special place in my heart, but please be aware of the very triggering themes in it, okay?
âThe Winter Collection (series; completed) [16.8k] // pjm x f. reader // e2l // đĽľđ
đ you donât know how you ended up here. Stuck with your mortal enemy, Park Jimin, in you car â in a fucking snowstorm.
đ¨ď¸ this is a collection of one shots that is with the same couple in the same universe (which is a series đ). Itâs basically just a crack fic.Â
âMy Heartâs Home (series; completed) [237.6k] // pjm x f. reader // childhood bf2l, ranch!au, cowboy!au // đŠď¸đĽľđĽ°đ
đ youâd never thought youâd step foot back at the ranchâ a place you used to call home a long time ago. When you are forced to go back, reconcile with your sister and a certain childhood friend that you had long forgotten, will sparks reunite?
đ¨ď¸ this is a very, very, very long story lol đ It is en extreme emotional roller-coaster, but itâs really worth it. Itâs also inspired by the amazing show McLeodâs Daughters đĽ°
âLast Night in Magic Shop [12.5k] // pjm x f. reader // s2l, one night stand, vampire!au // đĽľđŞ
đ you find yourself down at the local club, Magic Shop, because your best friend feels like your lovelife is dry as ice. You did not plan on meeting a handsome stranger, who moves his body like an angel, but speaks like the devil. Feeling like he might match your nasty needs, you take him home, enjoying an unforgettable night filled with pleasure.
đ¨ď¸ my first vampire story! Itâs just a silly thing.Â
âWhalien52 [10.6k] // pjm x f. reader // kittygang!jimin, apocalyptic, survival, dystopian // đŠď¸đĽľđť
đ youâve been working for the New World Order as an assassin for years, guarding secrets without batting an eye or asking questions. But when a striking pink haired man shows up at the headquarters stealing information, he makes you question everything. With all of humanity at stake, what will you do?Â
đ¨ď¸ this one is actually part of a Yoongi series, but this is a stand-alone one shot, but itâs within the same universe as âEnd of The Worldâ.
I have a few more Jimin stories that I didnât list here, but these are my faves. I have written for most of the other members tooâyou can check out my masterlist here [link] đ

jjk masterlist
You had a great life, as far as it went.Â
You were born into a wealthy family, far more wealthy than they deserved to be. You had maids at your beck and call and did not need to worry about the future as long as you acted correctly. You had book upon books, as many as you could dream of, so long as you didnât bore your mother too much with them. You had any sort of food you could dream of and you had the most caring friend in the world who loved you very much.Â
Honestly, what more could a woman ask for?
âI say we move the whole ordeal to Friday, seeing how Satoru is only arriving on Wednesday. But my mother insisted that we keep in on Thursday because the rest of London just couldnât wait to see my dashing brotherâŚâ Lily continued her furious rant as she paced back and forth the vast expanse of your familyâs drawing room, shaking her head in clear frustration.Â
âAnd you want it to be a day laterâŚbecauseâŚ?â You sipped quietly on your tea, trying to keep your smile at a minimum. It was hard not to get giggly when Lilyâs face got red and her eyes bugged out of her sockets. For such a pretty girl it tended to shift her features whenever she got angry or annoyed.Â
âWell, heâs going to be tired!â She stopped her pacing as she stared at you with her mouth a bit open as if it were the most obvious answer, âAnd whenever Satoru is tired heâs so difficult to deal with. Heâs going to want to talk about his travels for at least three days before heâs ready to mingle with the rest of the works!âÂ
You nodded heavily, showing her that you were completely on her side.Â
âHas he written to you?â She asked and then quickly shook her head, despite the fact you were going to answer with a quiet yes to her question. He had written you a few letters, all of them stashed in your vanity as you read over them, each going over his travels, sometimes sending you little knick-knacks he saw.Â
âNot the point. What Iâm trying to say is that my mother always goes over the limit with how much she welcomes her children. And Satoru for that matter! Christ, heâs twenty-five and unmarried!âÂ
You wanted to sink into your seat in embarrassment. You were only so much younger and had never had even an interaction with a suitor before.Â
Life was great, for the most part.Â
As much as you couldnât complain, there was a small matter at hand that was growing increasingly more alarming the more the years went on.Â
For as long as you could remember, you and Lily were set on never getting married. Ever since she read that one Jane Austen book she was hellbent on independence and no men. You tagged along, seeing how that was a better excuse than admitting no man had even asked you to join him to be his partner to dance before.
Lily didnât seem to care much for this. While she was set on her celibacy pact, she had been approached before. It doesnât change much, but it did at least show her that somebody wants her. You were either such as a spinster or married to some ancient man your mother had to dig out from some corner of the market.Â
âAnd SatoruâŚâ Lily rambled on, but all it did was remind you of an even worse fact.Â
You were terribly in love with her brother.Â
You have known the Gojo family for ten years, five months, twelve days, and two hours, and you have been in love with Gojo Satoru for ten years, five months, twelve days, and thirty minutes.Â
Their family had immigrated from Japan months before the oldest child was born, but they had only moved to Greenwich ten years, five months, and ten days ago. You met them only two days later when you accidentally wandered into their gardens, unknowing that a family had just moved in.Â
The first time you met that particular Gojo, you were thirteen and facing serious issues with yourself and your own family. You wanted to move to America in hopes that the boys over there would fancy you more and your mother forbade it. Satoru laughed when he saw your horrified face popping up from their blackberry bush, definitely not expecting to see anybody there.Â
âHello there,â the stranger called out. You thought he was a grandfather with the way his hair was artic white, but he only seemed to be a bit older than you the closer he got.Â
âIâm not stealing from you I swear!â You cried out as you let the blackberries tumble out of your stained hands. You cannot be taken to prison, you simply wouldnât survive.Â
âI can see that.â He crossed his arms as he tried not to laugh at the way your dress was stained a dark blue color.Â
He introduced himself, and Lily, and soon, you and the girl were attached at the hip.Â
It didnât help that as kind and as charming as he was, he only saw you as his sister's closest friend. It also didnât help that every other woman in high society seemed to be in love with the man and it certainly made it so much more horrific that he seemed to have his eyes on everybody else but you.Â
He, much like his sister, was averse to the idea of marriage, but for a completely different reason.Â
He seemed to despise the idea of being committed, which is most likely why he had been traveling the entirety of Europe and Asia for the past year or so. Despite his motherâs frantic worrying about setting him up with a respectable lady, he pushed them all aside and fled (in some sense) and will be making his grand appearance a couple of days from now. Everybody is chattering with excitement. Youâre trying not to fill with total impending dread.Â
It had already taken everything you had to pretend that he didnât exist and that he had simply disappeared, and you knew your wretched mind would fall for him just as quickly as it did the first time around when you were set to see him next week.Â
â...and, are you even listening?â Lily asked, her voice garbling back to life as you snapped your eyes back to hers, covering your mouth with your teacup as you insistently nodded, trying to keep your smile from faltering as she squinted her eyes to look you over and see what was wrong.
âIâm totally in tune with you Lils,â you insisted, nibbling on a cookie to help you with nausea which only seemed to make it worse.Â
âHm,â she grunted, not seeming to believe you but not truly caring as she continued, âAnd thank the heavens youâll be there beside me, for who knows what would become of me in such an unruly crowd of men and women just waiting for my brother to make his entrance. Iâd lose my sanity.âÂ
Yes, you thought, how lucky. If only love worked that way, of ignoring it until it faded. If only.
âIâll be there.â You promised.Â
For better or for worse, youâd be there.Â
---
The ball was just as you had imagined it.Â
Extravagant, elegant, large, and incredibly crowded.Â
One of the perks of being an outsider in these sorts of scenes is you didnât have to dance anymore (no matter how much it stung the first time around getting used to this fact).Â
Lily was off somewhere, being forced to socialize. Your other sisters were also lost in the crowd, either dancing or being swooned by a potential match.Â
You were yet to see the man of the hour, but then again, so was everybody else. He was either hiding away or being swallowed whole by the hoards of people eager to get a glimpse of him.Â
Not that you wanted to see him, of course. Just curious.Â
The food was, as always, a bonus. Nobody was going to judge you for scarfing anything down when you had begrudgingly sworn off marriage, and perhaps one of the good things about Lily's pact was that you didnât care much about the public eye anymore.Â
âPlease, at least act like weâre not starving you.â Your mother pleaded, unfortunately, stuck to your side for the night as she eyes you and your plate.Â
âIâm trying my best,â you reasoned, making sure you didnât drop anything on your dress.Â
âThe Viscount is coming tonight,â she tried to think and you snorted, earning some distasteful looks from the widows around you.Â
âAnd heâs just dying to see me, I suppose?â You rolled your eyes at the idea, to help the sting from your own words. It was better to be rationable than to be delusional.Â
âWell it doesnât hurt to-â
âTry?â You cut her off with another laugh as you chew on an eclair, âMight as well. Right after the Princess introduces herself Iâll go up.â The two of you eye the girl in the diamond-encrusted gown with an equally bright tiara on her head. Your mother gave up the argument.Â
For the last couple of days, you have been at a mental war with yourself. On the one hand, it surely must mean something if he wrote you letters. On the other one, he wrote it to his entire family and he probably views you as such. No matter how much you want to pretend that the Gojo cares for you, it wonât be in the same way that measures how much you care for him.Â
âIâm going to get some more of these macaroons, Iâll be right back.â You excuse yourself as your mother pressed her lips into a thin line, wanting to push you to dance but knowing no amount of persuading was going to change your mind when it was already set on something.Â
Wading through the dense crowd was certainly a feat, but you did it nonetheless. From the dessert table, you could barely make out the pop of chartreuse that was Lily's gown, and you wondered how much longer until sheâd be free to giggle and gossip with you.Â
Your eyes scanned over the little sweets carefully as you mentally weighed which one would taste good and which one would be a surprise in the kindest sense of the word. The colorful ones were often pretty but they tested either too bland or too bitter and the ones with caramel side sugar tended to be too sweet. All the good macaroons with the pistachio filling were gone, which was odd because you could only count on your fingers how many people aside from you tended to favor that one.Â
âLooking for something?â
A green macaron was held in front of your face, slowly forcing you to turn your head in its direction as it began to pull away from you
Him.Â
âOh!âÂ
Oh? If only you could hit yourself in the head that would be great.Â
âOh?â Gojo chuckled, his brows pinching together in slight confusion at your reaction as his lips threatened to pull into a teasing smile, âI havenât seen you in a year and that's what youâve got to say?â
You try not to let your heart flutter at his cheeky manner as you roll your eyes, your smile growing as you take him in.Â
Heâs gotten taller if that was even possible. His hair is still as white as it was, and it seems that no amount of sun was going to change that. Heâs gotten a little bit tanner, no longer that frigid pale hue to his skin that made you worry heâd drop dead at any moment. Heâs unfortunately more muscular, which just means you have to cast away the scrawny image youâve made in your mind in hopes that heâd come back anemic.Â
His eyes are just as captivating as ever, blue and inviting. His jaw is sharper and yet he has no facial hair on his face. Which you prefer on most men but youâre glad heâs never given into that trend.Â
Most importantly, he still looks like that boy you fell in love with so many years ago, and no time away would ever change you at your core.Â
You try to not let your neck prickle with heat as he seems to assess you the same way you're doing to him, try not to feel self-conscious as his eyes roam over your features. Sure, a person can change in a year, but you wouldnât bet youâve changed that much that would warrant this amount of staring.
âSoâŚ?âÂ
ââToru, hi!â You snap out of your state, watching as his face picks up and breaks into a grin as you set your plate down somewhere, seemingly now realizing that Satoru is here and in front of you, âMy, youâve grown so much!â
âReally?â He looks at his torso and his arms as if he canât believe it.Â
âWell, a bit,â you curse at your awkwardness as he cocks a brow, âIâm sorry, Iâm a bit out of my element tonight. I apologize for my earlier reaction.â You duck your head down for a second as he waves it off, hopefully not offended.Â
Youâre glad this little table is tucked away in an alcove away from most of the public eye, and the only people around the two of you are older people and the people standing outside in the gardens. Either they donât see the man or theyâre being somewhat human and granting the two of you some privacy.Â
âApology accepted, but not needed,â he teases, patting your shoulder affectionately as you try not to act as if that single touch made you reconsider the idea of marriage.Â
âHow are you?â He asks after a beat, not affected by your out-of-character attitude as he tilts his head to the side.Â
âAs good I could be,â you offer him a wink that came off as an elongated blink, âWhatever Lily filled you in on has most likely happened to me too.â He chuckles, his laughter the sound of melted honey.Â
Fuck, youâre never going to get over him.Â
âAnd you? How were your trips?â You egged him on, eyes tracing him, watching as some pink dusted over his cheeks.Â
âBoring. Couldnât wait to come back.â He says, but you can hear the sarcasm in his voice. Mixed with the way he couldnât contain his bits of laughter, you laughed alongside him.Â
âIâd believe it if not for your tan and newfound outlook on life, or so it seems from how Lily describes it.â
âShe exaggerates everything,â he waves it off, and you wonder what that double-edged sword implies.Â
âI-â
âHeâs here!â You hear a loud voice cut you off as the two of you look over your shoulder to see his mother leading the awaiting princess and her train to where the two of you are standing, âHe seems to be getting warmed up with this fine lady!â She says your name as heat rushes to your cheeks in embarrassment.Â
It was only seconds before you were surrounded by men and women you had never seen before, all hanging off of Satoruâs words as he scrambled to answer all of their questions.Â
And so it begins, you say to yourself as you push away from them, going to find Lily as you wonder why you even try.Â
You miss the way he calls out for you, quiet enough so that nobody else hears it, but loud enough that his chest tightens in confusion at the sheer desperation of it.Â
---
âI despise men!â
Youâre at the Gojo estate for once, and Lily has started a new tirade that has lasted for the last hour.Â
âWhat brought this on?â You press, exchanging worried glances with Satoru and her younger sister as she groans, jamming her palms into her eyes as she vehemently shakes her head.Â
âDoes this,â she shoves her hand, more importantly, her ring finger without a ring, in front of your face, âLook like Iâm keen on getting married to you?â
âNoâŚ.?â You mutter, scared of what she would say next.Â
âDoes it look like an invitation to barge into my home?â
âNot exactly,â You say, earning a sympathetic look for Satoru as she glares at him.Â
âDoes it look like I want to get frisky in the broom cupboards?â
âChrist! Lily, your sisters here!â You shout, jumping to cover the young girl's ears. Lily waves it off and Satoru just chuckles, a twinkle in his eyes as you usher the girl out of the tea room as you slam the door shut.Â
âThis certainly beats the beaches in Venice,â Satoru says as you near the table again, winking at you as you laugh quietly.Â
âIâm so glad Iâm not getting married. You should be too,â she points her finger at you as you look up at her, âMen are nothing but evil, money hungry, sex driven-â
âCharming, majestic-â Satoru talks over her as she talks even louder.Â
âDirty animals!â She finishes with a cry.Â
You and Satoru share a glance as you try to laugh. Sheâs not wrong, far from it. The majority of men in this place needed to be sent back to their creator, but Lily had a vein in his forehead that was protruding at an odd angle.Â
âYou laugh now, but youâll be thanking me fifty years from now.â She warns as you nod, acting totally compliant with her.Â
âYouâre still with her on her no-marriage pact?â Satoru asks as he stands up, walking past Lily as he looks out from the window, seemingly admiring the gardens outside. He glances over at you as you sink into the satin cushions beneath you.Â
âYes,â but your answer came out shaky and unsure.Â
âOf course she is,â Lily answered for you with a definite nod, âAnd besides, sheâs the luckier one. Itâs not like any man has even asked her to marry anyway.â She says jokingly, shoving a biscuit in her mouth as she plops herself down beside you, nudging your shoulder with hers as if it were the funniest thing in the world.Â
You wish the sofa could swallow you whole.Â
âHey,â Satoru turns around, brows furrowed as he looks at his sister, but the door opens before he can finish his sentence.Â
âMiss Gojo,â their butler, Fred, who youâve known since youâve known Lily announces for her as he stands at the foot of the door, âYour mother has requested your presence in her quarters.â
Lily stands up with a groan, wiping the crumbs off of her dress as she makes sure thereâs nothing around the corners of her mouth.Â
âIâm needed elsewhere,â she pats your arm caring for it despite having her words wanting to make you plummet yourself off of a cliff, âIâll see you tomorrow.â
You give her a weak goodbye, watching as she leaves with the door shutting behind her as you sit up a bit straighter, getting ready to leave yourself.Â
You stand up, careful not to make any eye contact with Satoru out of sheer embarrassment as you smooth out the wrinkles in your dress, hoping the silence would suffocate you faster than it would him.Â
âLily talks too much sometimes,â he finally says, stepping away from the window as he takes a two closer to your direction, before passing, âIâd apologize on her behalf but Iâm pretty sure sheâs already forgotten what sheâs said.â He tries to lighten the mood and bless his soul, but you can already feel your spirits for the day sour.Â
âItâs alright,â you promise, though he seems to disagree but you continue anyway, âI know her, she doesnât mean it.â Still doesnât mean it didnât hurt, a part of you chides.Â
âAre you leaving?â He asked, taking another tentative step forward.Â
âI was planning on it,â you say with a little chuckle, hoping that your eyes watering up wasnât too noticeable, âIs that alright with you?â
He looked at you with his bright eyes and just blinked, taking a while to reach his senses.Â
âY-yes! Yes, quite alright. Let me just get my coatâŚâ He muttered, brushing past you as you quickly tried to reject his incoming offer.Â
âThereâs no need!â You run a bit to catch up to him and his fast pace, âMy house is barely two skips away,â you lamely joke, hoping heâd give it up. You wanted to wallow in your self-pity on your walk home, not have to converse with the one man whoâd inadvertently give you more to pity over.Â
âNot a chance,â he argued, draping the coat in question over his arm, âWhat sort of person would I be if I let you walk out alone?â
Any other person, you wanted to say but stopped yourself.Â
âI donât mean to bother youâŚâ You wrong your hands in a nervous state, eyes darting everywhere but his.Â
You were trying to work on your silly crush this past week, which had unfortunately ramped up ever since he came back. In response, you worked out that the best solution to getting over it was to act like he didnât exist and ignore him whenever possible. Clearly, it was working out completely in your favor.Â
âNot a bother at all.â He insisted, linking his other arms with yours as you jumped a bit in surprise. He was forward, if anything.Â
âFred,â he calls out, getting the butler's attention as you try to hide yourself away, âTell my mother Iâll be back in a bit.â The man just nods, opening up the front doors as Satoru leads the two of you out.Â
The sun was out and working away, which didnât help with the heat already prickling away through your skin. The Gojo estate was large, but hidden away, and for that you were glad. You could only imagine the gossip that would arise if certain ladies in society were to see you (helplessly) draped over the bachelor's arm.Â
âAre you enjoying being back here?â You asked, trying to exert your confidence when you were feeling anything but.Â
Itâs not like you were unsure of yourself at most times, itâs just that when youâre around the one man youâve been in love with since childhood and he feels nothing of the sort, you canât help but be more conscious over everything.Â
Satoru looked at you, shrugging as he pursed his lips, thinking of an answer.Â
âI missed it,â he says, âBut I mainly came back for my family and my friends and wellâŚâ He trailed off, chewing on his lip as he waved off his thoughts as if it didnât matter, âNonetheless, now that Iâve been around them, I remember why I wanted to leave.âÂ
And sometimes, despite him not wanting to, made you feel as if you were the most important person heâs had the pleasure of talking to, when in reality thatâs just in his nature.Â
âIs Lily pestering you too much?â You tease, a little smile on your face that wrinkles the edges of your eyes. He simply stared at you again, his eyes bright.Â
âThat,â he playfully tugged on your arm, âAnd the fact that my mother has bombarded me with the idea of marriage. And Luke is having troubles with his fiancĂŠÂ and Annie doesnât want to learn to readâŚitâs all just very chaotic.â He finished with a tired laugh, as if thatâs all he could muster up.Â
âSeems like a normal day in your house, if Iâm being honest.â You lament, kicking a pebble with the point of your shoe.Â
âI guess so,â he heaves a sigh that comes out dramatically, âHonestly, I donât know how youâve put up with it all these years.â
You scoff, digging your elbow into his side a bit to show that you were offended by his statement.Â
âYour family is perhaps the closest thing I have to a second family!â
âAnd who says family canât get on your last nerve?â He argued, and that shut you up. He was, indubitably, correct.Â
âYes, well,â you stumble to find some reasoning and he laughs seeing you falter, knowing that he got you cornered, ââToru, you are simply a horrible influence to be around.â Is all you can come up with, and despite the severity of your words it only seems to spur him on even more.Â
âAnd yet you canât seem to get enough of me, can you?âÂ
You almost stopped in your tracks, your heart seizing in your chest as you try not to fumble up your well-made facade of indifference.Â
All you could remember upon his statement were the words he spoke so long ago, not knowing youâd heard them.Â
âCharles, you donât get it, I donât want a wife!â Satoru exclaimed as he snapped at his friend. It was a gala held at the queen's palace and you had strayed too far away from Lily and found yourself hiding behind a wall as you eavesdropped on the conversation.Â
âNot even the Princess?â Another man pushed as you heard Satoru let out a heavy sigh. You peeled around to see him pinching the bridge of his nose.Â
âI donât want to be tied down. You saw what happened to my parents.â He argued. A part of you sympathized with him.Â
âWell,â you could make out this voice as his younger brother, two years older than you he went to thinking, âWhat about that friend of Lilyâs? She seems nice enough.â
The hair on your arm pricked upwards. Surely they couldnât be talking about you.Â
âWho?â Satoru asks and his brother says your name in a hushed whisper, as if you held more weight in your title than the Princess did.Â
âHer? No, absolutely not,â he said with such disgust that his friends thought he was joking, âYouâre out of your mind if youâd think Iâd want to court her.â
Your heart, full of love and hope and dreams cracked, crumbled in your chest. And you left, running away because thatâs all you knew how to do and sobbed your eyes out to Lily, stating that you heard somebody talking bad about you, refusing to admit that it was her own brother that was causing you to break in front of her.Â
A part of you felt pathetic for still caring for him after that night, but thereâs not much fight in you when it comes to the people you loved. You pulled away, sure, and stopped your lame excuses of flirting, but you never stopped. He never found out that you heard, so he continued as your friend and you continued as the shameless woman.Â
âRight,â you swallow thickly, glad that your estate is now growing closer and closer, knowing that you feel sick and canât handle it anymore, âThank you so much for your help, but Iâm sure I can make the treacherous journey on my own now.âÂ
You wring your hand away from his arm, you smile wobbling as you tip your head in his direction, watching him try to make sense of your quick change in nature.Â
âLet me take you up to your door,â he started but you raised your hand to silence him, shaking your head.Â
âThat would be too much to ask for. I will leave you hereâŚum, Satoru,â you say politely, not noting the way his jaw clenched at your sudden formality when addressing him, âIâll see you tomorrow, hopefully.â
And you left quickly before he could say anything else. You must stay focused on the reality of your situation;
Your best friend's brother just simply wasnât in love with you.Â
---
âMiss,âÂ
You perked up from your chair in your quaint little library, setting your book down as you watched one of the maids, Ella, politely calls from the door.Â
âThereâs a gentleman outside calling for you.â
Your brows furrowed as you found a marker so that you donât lose your place and purse your lips together in questioning.Â
âDo you know whoâŚ?â Your head cocked to the side as you stood up, walking near her as you wondered if it were that delivery boy who said heâd come with the new copies of the BrontĂŤ books youâd been eyeing for the past month.Â
âItâs the Viscount Gojo, miss.â She said simply.Â
Your face dropped, and you watched as confusion spread across hers.Â
âHim? Here? Did he say what was wrong?â You began to rustle around, trying to find something to throw on top of your slip.Â
Did something happen to Lily? Did she run away? Was their mother in trouble? You could recall her telling you that her head was aching, could something serious have happened because of that? Christ, you should have told somebody about it rather than comfort her and make her tea. Was he leaving again? Perhaps-
âHe said he wanted to see you miss, thatâs all he told me.â She seemed apprehensive, judging your face to see if you were maybe feeling ill due to your reaction.Â
âUm, alright, just,â you hurried around, trying your fastest to get to your room, âTell him Iâll be down in a few minutes! Donât tell him Iâm preparing myself, just say that I was discussing matters with somebody!â You call out as you sprint across the halls, not hearing any confirmation as you lock yourself in your room, ransacking your closet to find something not too flashy but not too boring.Â
It took a good four minutes just to find a suitable dress and another five to make your face and hair look presentable enough as you scampered down the stairs only to find said Viscount waiting in the foyer.Â
His face turned to yours as he heard your heels clicking on the marble, growing into a bright smile as he dipped his head down to greet you.Â
âHello,â he said your name with that smooth voice of his as he took his jacket off and kept it on his arm, âIâm sorry for turning up on such short notice.â
âItâs no problem,â you try to catch your breath for the first time in the last ten minutes as your chest heaves slightly up and down, âNo problem at all. To what do I owe the pleasure?â
He takes a second to respond, eyes scanning your features, your clothing, your chest as it tries to catch a solid breath, and you feel yourself look down to make sure there aren't any noticeable wrinkles in the fabric.Â
âI, I just wanted to drop in. See how you were doing.â
You tried not to look even more startled, but your brows creased once again as you gnawed on the inside of your cheek.Â
âIâm quite alrightâŚthank youâŚ?â You couldnât look that out of the ordinary, right?
âGood, thatâs good,â he watched as you finished your descent down the stairs, slowly coming towards him as you waited for him to finish, âIâm sorry if I interrupted your conversation withâŚ?â Ella did give him a name you wanted to guess.Â
âLord Cornwallis.â You finished for him, not knowing why that was the first name that came to your mind. It was true that he had been here yesterday, but you didnât talk much to him in his brief visit.Â
âLord Cornwallis?â Satoru repeated back in shock, his brows shooting upwards as he did nothing to hide his outburst. His face quickly turned into one of disgust, which accurately represented the emotions you felt yesterday when you eavesdropped on the conversation he had with your mother behind closed doors.Â
âYes, you just missed him. He went out through the back door,â why were you making this web of lies even bigger? You have no self-control, do you?
âWhat was Cornwallis doing here?âÂ
You but your tongue, having to come up with a lie or tell the truth as to why he had visited yesterday. Either way, both options turned out with horrible results.Â
âHe asked for my hand.â The truth it was, then.Â
His brows seemed to disappear into his hairline as his jaw slacked, mouth wide open. Damn your mind, you should have just lied.Â
Lily was wrong in one thing, perhaps. You have gotten a few marriage offers in the last three years, but by all men who were older than your grandfather. You hadnât even told Lily about them and now you were telling her brother.Â
âIâŚâ Satoru couldnât even find the right words to say. You wanted to bury yourself in a hole.Â
ââŚCornwallis? Isnât he-â
âPushing ninety-nine? Yes.â Nobody was sure of his age, and ninety-nine was perhaps even being too generous. Everybody knew that Cornwallis was simply ancient.Â
âDid I save you from the conversation at least? I must say, if there was any man I would wish ill upon, itâs certainly him. Heâs a lying old cheat.â He tried to joke again but you swallowed thickly. Perhaps if he came at the same time yesterday he might have. But he didnât and you had to sit through an hour of him pleading with your mother as the two of you just stared in abject horror and surprise.Â
âYes well, thank youâŚfor doing that.â You lied, cleaning your teeth together as you tried to smile, not wanting to hurt his feelings as you came up closer to him, desperately hoping to change the topic of the conversation.Â
âIs everything alright with Lily?â You asked his eyes that were focused on the floor jumping to yours as your lips parted, worry still clear on your face.Â
âYes, of course, I just wanted to ask a favor of you. But, judging from your encounter with men today I would understand if this is pushing it,â he cut right to the crux of the matter. He seemed nervous, which was an odd emotion to see on a man otherwise very confident and sure in himself. It unsettled you.Â
You tilted your head, waiting for him to find his words and continue. You could make out the slight blush on his face, the pink hue that spread across his cheeks, and the tip of his nose. He was, by all means, the cutest person youâve ever seen.Â
âMy mother's holding another ball, two weeks from now, you see,â his lip caught between his teeth, âAnd sheâs been bugging me about having a date for the night. She wants to appease the rest of the gentry, I suppose. Would you, by any chance, like to be that?âÂ
You stopped computing his words.Â
â...Itâs honestly just to get her off my back. And you wouldnât have to stay with me the entire evening, you could do whatever youâd like after we get some of the necessities over with. Lily was the first who suggested the idea, she said you wouldnât be doing much other than gossip with her. Of course, if you donât want to I certainly wonât force the idea, but itâs merely a suggestion.â His blue eyes, ever so convincing and round and caring bore into yours, and despite your better judgment you find yourself nodding.Â
âI wouldnât mind it,â you say a bit breathlessly, completely forgetting about Cornwallis and the way you were debating it and the fact that this means nothing at all, and would most likely cause you more harm than good.Â
His nervousness washed away into a big smile, and you cursed yourself at the little flicker of hope you felt deep in your soul as he scrambled to find the right words to say to thank you. The flood of gratitude and appreciation stabbed deeply into your heart as he kept repeating friend, but you were too hopeful for love.Â
Your mother always said that loving would always be your greatest weakness.Â
---
You should have said no.Â
The amount of eyes that were focused on you was enough to make you nauseous, and you couldnât get sick for you hadnât had anything to eat today with how hurried everything was.Â
Your arm was draped around Satoruâs, and he held tightly onto your hand. He was the image of luxury and charisma right now, and if you were in the crowd looking as he made his way through the crowd you almost would have wanted to bow.Â
Time came by a lot faster when you were totally freaking out over it, and before you knew it, you were put in a dress you hadnât even picked and corseted to the heavens. Your hair was done with extra detail, and they even went as far as putting some Swarovskiâs into it so that when the candlelight hit it, youâd sparkle twice as much.Â
Satoru, ever the gentleman, had picked you up from your estate as he walked you to their home amidst all the chaos of getting ready for another ball. In all honesty, you have no idea how their mother manages to keep her sanity through all of this.
You were still a bit giddy from your earlier interaction with Satoru, although it didnât do much to calm your nerves now.Â
âIâm sorry for taking so long!â You had said as you rushed down your stairs, careful not to trip over your train as you put your earrings in. Ella said that he was waiting for you downstairs, you just underestimated how early heâd be.Â
âDonât apologizeâŚâ He had turned around from admiring a painting, his eyes widening a bit when he saw you. He quickly shut his mouth, but you had already gauged his reaction. You tried not to let it get the best of you, but you could have sworn he blushed more often than usual when you interlinked your arm with his.
âYouâre cutting off my blood circulation.â He whispers in your ear as you try to smile, your eyes nervous as they dart around the room. How could it be even bigger than that last ball? Did they suddenly meet thirty new people?Â
âMaybe you could cut mine off.â You snap back through your teeth, your hand gripping his wrist as tightly as you could.Â
âHow are we supposed to dance if one of us is dead?â He grumbles back, putting on a little grin as he makes eye contact with his mother, and then goes back to whispering, âItâs just one song and youâre done. Youâve done this before.â
You wanted to shove him to the ground.Â
âNo, I havenât!â You say loud enough that he hears but try to mask it so that nobody else does, âI told you yesterday this is my first time dancing with somebody!â As embarrassing as it was to admit, right now you couldnât be bothered to care as he led you to the middle of the room, standing in first position as you two waited for the orchestra to begin.Â
âAre you saying Iâm your first?â He teased, his tongue poking out from between his lips as he watched you grow mortified, rubbing the back of your hand in a comforting way as his means to apologize.Â
You wanted to go ahead and argue but the cello and violins started and you were whisked away by his calculated movements, and the only thing you could do was follow in his lead.Â
The two of you practiced a bit in the days leading up to this, but it was a lot different when your only crowd was Lily and her constant whining about how boring it was.Â
Now, with everybody staring at you and him, it was far more daunting.Â
âDonât look at the ground, look at me,â he whispered in your ear, smiling when your eyes traveled to him. He tried not to crack when he saw the pure loathing and hatred in them, but at least you were looking up and not at his shoes.Â
ââToru Iâm never doing a favor for you again, you owe me.â You groan, letting him twirl you around in a circle as some of the ladies give a polite clap.Â
âName your price.â He egged you on, bringing you back flush against his chest as his hand found purchase on your waist.Â
âNot money,â you grumble, eyes twitching as your heart beats rapidly in your chest, youâve always wanted to dance with him, sure, but not under these circumstances.Â
âBooks?â You consider it but shake your head. You deserve something bigger for what youâre putting yourself through. Shocking enough, after being a wallflower for so many years, you werenât handling being in the spotlight too well.Â
âIâll think about it. But it has to be big.â You warn and he lifts up his pinky on your waist to show you his unbridled loyalty to keeping true to your words.
âWhere are you going after this is done?â He spins the two of you around, and you watch as more couples rush around the two of you. Itâs less stressful when others are dancing, but you still feel tense.Â
âIâm probably going to stay with Lily outside.â He seems to deflate a little, though he still stands tall, his suit never crinkling through his movements.Â
âNo more dancing?â He teased but you vehemently disagree with the idea.Â
âNever again.â Itâs not as though you hate it, in fact, a younger you would have been jumping with glee to be able to dance with Satoru. But after years of growing accustomed to watching rather than participating, you canât grow out of that habit.Â
You felt a tap on your shoulder and turned around to see the Princess herself as she looked at you with pleading eyes.Â
âWould you mind ifâŚ?â She motioned to Satoru and then to you. You barely noticed the number coming to an end, and the rupture of applause was the last thing you heard before you scrambled away from him.Â
You didnât even notice how he had held onto your hand tighter, not wanting to let you go.
âO-of course, your majesty.â You winced at your select choice of words and how you said her title almost as if you questioned it.Â
âThank you.â She mumbled and for somebody of such high regard, you wouldnât think of her to need to plead with somebody, especially you, to be able to have a dance with Satoru.Â
Your job for the night was done, successfully might be too loose of a term, but finished nonetheless. You chose not to look back at Satoru, knowing that the wide grin heâd save for the girls he was interested in would only twist that knife deeper into your heart.Â
You were a sadist in the most pathetic way possible.
You waved goodbye to Satoru as another number started again, and tried your best to get away from all the twirling bodies as you headed out to find Lily.Â
It didnât take long until you found her trying to weasel out some information from her brother, tapping him repeatedly on the shoulder as he tried to fight her off.Â
ââŚwhat did you hear, what do you know?â She pressed as he groaned, obviously trying to have a private conversation with the lady next to him.Â
âNothing Lily!â He locked eyes with you as he almost begged silently for you to take her.Â
âLily, Iâm here. We can go now.â You looped elbows with her as you dragged her away, giving her brother a quick smile that said you accepted his gratefulness.Â
As you walked through the stone path in the garden, she muttered dejectedly about how she was just about to get some good information out of him.Â
âHow was dancing with Satoru?â She finally asked after a while. The two of you werenât alone, but far less crowded than it would if you had been inside.Â
âStressful, but the song was short so I wasnât needed for too long.â You tell her honestly. If thereâs one thing you canât do with Lily itâs lie, for sheâll sniff out of you the moment you come up with it.Â
âYou look flustered.â She noted, looking over your face and the sweat that dotted over your cheekbones.Â
âYou dance in a sweltering room like that with the entire ton looking at you and try not to get flustered.â You reasoned and she seemed to buy it. It wasnât a total lie, but a stretch of the truth.Â
âYou know,â Lily had terrible balance and often collided with you as she walked, âI was talking to my mother and despite her insistent warnings, I think we should make it official.â
âMake what official?â The lights from the candles above you illuminated her face and she had that look of mischief that either excited or frightened you.Â
âThat we plan to be unwed.â She grinned cheek to cheek and all you could feel was that same wave of nausea that had been prickling at you since the start of the night. This was the last thing you needed to hear about right now.Â
âTheyâre going to think weâre either lunatics or lovers.â You say with a sullen and heavy sigh, looking up at the sky in some sort of desperate manner as you wait for some sort of angel to save you from this conversation.Â
âAnd whatâs the issue with that? Let them think. You have always said youâve wanted this, so letâs let the world know.âÂ
Something you wish Lily was was to be more aware. As loving, thoughtful and caring as she was, she never seemed to pick up on the little things. For one, you doubted she noticed just how quiet you got whenever she brought up this conversation. Youâd give her the benefit of the doubt and say that you rarely talked much when it came to marriage, but that was just so that you could save yourself from the ongoing embarrassment of never having experienced love or some sort of feeling that somebody would feel towards you to genuinely want to be your husband.Â
Not only that, but far from Lily's point of help, is the fact that ever since Satoru has been back, your childish feelings have come flooding right in with him. No matter how many tea sessions you have with Lily and have him sitting in the background, either reading the morning's paper or jotting things down in his journal, it always spins to him sitting right beside you as you talk about anything under the sun.Â
And while you know your hopes of marrying him are just too far-fetched, youâve always been a hopeless romantic. Something Lily just hasnât ever been able to pick up on when around you. Which is shocking, seeing how the only novels youâve read for the majority of your life was centered around such a topic.Â
âListen, Lily, Iâve been thinking,â you pause for a second in your place, staring at the pebbles arranged in the formation of a star as you swallow your bile, âThat maybeâŚâÂ
You were nervously wringing your hands together, a sign that Lily knew all too well. She could read you like any of her books, and she let out a gasp, covering her mouth with a shaky hand as she pointed an accusatory finger at you.Â
âNo,â she dug the finger into your chest, âYouâre thinking of breaking up the pact?â It comes out breathless. Her soft curls of white that had been done up beautifully were slowly falling down as she shook her head in pure shock, not giving you a chance to talk.Â
âI mean this is just brilliant. Brilliant! What am I supposed to do now, go out into the world alone as a spinster?âÂ
You stuttered, your fingers interlaced with one another as you tried to calm her down from causing a scene. Trying to shush her came to no avail as you wring your hands away from her, acting as if your touch was burning.Â
If the Gojoâs were anything, itâs overly dramatic in places where dramatics were certainly not needed.Â
âPlease be rational,â she urged you as she clutched onto your wrists, suddenly pleading to you with her wide eyes, âThe season is almost over and you havenât had any offers. Sooner than later weâre going to be thirty, then forty, then fifty, and husbandless. We should say it now so that it doesnât come off as a pathetic cry to hold onto what little decency we have in the future!âÂ
Christ, you hated that she was being somewhat logical. But her rationality stung, the way melted wax does when it burns the skin. She didnât know just how much she was hurting you, and you doubted she ever would.Â
âLook, I know Iâm probably not going to be offered a chance at marriage, but it wouldnât hurt to at least try.â You try to reason with her as she sniffs, her eyes squinted as she looks at you in anger.Â
âThis was our pact and youâre going against it! Whatâs next?â
You were going to argue that this pact was only made on the basis of her having too much champagne to drink and you being sullen over her brother, but you were cut off from getting the chance to do so.Â
âWhatâs your issue?âÂ
You turned around at the familiar voice as you saw Satoru nearing you, Lily continuing her rant as she seemed to completely miss that her brother was coming towards the two of you.Â
âWhat?â You felt overwhelmed with having two Gojoâs corner you, both rather angry from the looks of it.Â
âI know that this isnât your scene but you said youâd be my date. You donât have to dance with me, but at least be there.â He looks like heâs seething, and youâve never seen this look on him before. Itâs jarring, to say the least.Â
You feel like your head is about to explode.Â
âI just-â
â....and my mother was only more confident in the idea if you were doing it!â Lily exclaimed, causing you to look back at her as she urged you to think about it.Â
â...my mother has given me at least twenty women to mull over in the last twenty minutes. It would have been none if you just acted as my date for the night!â Satoruâs voice rose, and you felt like your heart was going to actually stop. Your head was spinning, your vision was blurry, and you couldnât hear anything besides a loud ringing in your ears.Â
âIâm sorry but-â The two of them talked over you, so stuck in their own worlds that they didnât notice the tears pricking at your eyes or the way you seemed to be short of breath. It would probably be one of their greatest flaws, never noticing something until it was far too late.Â
âStop!â You cried out, earning some looks from the people around you as you rubbed at your forehead, already feeling it ache under your touch, âPlease! Listen, just for a bloody second!âÂ
You took a deep breath and began.Â
âIâm a fucking romantic Lily, and nothingâs ever going to change that! I always have been! And I want to get married, I just agreed to your pact because I know Iâm probably never going to get that chance! And god, how can your only takeaway from reading Persuasion be to abstain from marriage?â Your nose crinkles in anger as you turn around to point your finger at her brother's chest, watching as he takes your reaction in obvious surprise.Â
âYou!â You cry out and he almost backs away, âI was trying to give you some courtesy by leaving! God forbid you gave anybody the idea that you were courting me!â You quickly wipe at your eyes but it does fuck all of hiding how you truly felt as your lips wobbled. Â
âWhy wouldâŚ?â He's breathless, no longer angry, just utterly confused and a wee bit frightened.Â
âWe both know youâre too good for that. Howâd you phrase it, youâd be out of your mind if you did such a thing?â You throw his own words back at him, and you watch in some sort of mixture of triumph and heartbreak as realization washes over his features.Â
He finally remembers.Â
âIâŚâ he swallowed thickly, running a hand through his hair as it fell out of his face, rubbing at his jaw as you looked at you from beneath his lashes, âI didnâtâŚâ but he canât finish his sentences and instead stops, sharing an unreadable look with his sister as they then look at you.Â
âIâm going home.â You say after a beat of silence, breathing deeply through your nose as you look away from the two of them.Â
âLet me-â Satoru started but you raised a hand to stop him.Â
âI think Iâd be better off alone.â You snap, nostrils flaring as you shake your head, pinching the bridge of your nose as you try to stop the already impending migraine that is about to come.Â
For once in your life, you didnât care about the eyes boring into your back or the way that whispers flew around you and twisted around your throat like a vine. You were glad that nobody else other than the servants was home as you ran up into your room, locking everybody else out as you sobbed into your pillows.Â
---
The days following your (well-deserved) outburst were more than rough.Â
To your knowledge, Lily has visited a total of ten times in the past five days, sometimes twice in the same one, while her brother has visited a grand total of zero. You didnât expect much from him, but this really cemented your quickly growing disdain.Â
Your mother informed you constantly that she was trying to put out the fires from that night but you couldnât bring it to feel too bad, after all, you were glad that you didnât say anything more drastic.Â
âThis is just so unlike you!â She cried, shaking in disappointment as you munched on some sweets you nicked from the kitchen.Â
âI know,â you chuckled, âIâm so proud of myself.â
She just throws her hands in the air as a sign of utterly giving up and storms out of the room, most likely to meet with somebody else to âclean up the mess.â
She was right for some part, you canât remember the last time you actually told somebody how you were feeling. Itâs not healthy on your end, but growing up with three older sisters who always got it their way meant that you had some lack of backbone.Â
Lily and Satoru, as much as you cared about them, didnât live like that. Their mother loved them all equally and she made sure that all of their voices were heard. She was always making sure that their priorities were met and she never made them feel inferior.Â
Which somehow, didnât pass on to you.Â
Loving the way you do got tiring when you got nothing back, and giving everybody your all when nobody seemed to notice it felt as though you were alone in a world full of people who cared for each other. Youâve read the books and heard the stories, but you eventually realized that it simply just wasnât in your cards to be dealt the same thing.Â
They cared, you know they did. But sometimes, it felt like they expected your care in order for them to show it to you.Â
âMiss?â you heard a faint voice and a knock at your door. You sat up from your slump as Ella slowly came inside, shutting the door soundly behind her.Â
âDid my mother ask you to make sure I havenât flung myself off the balcony?â You dust away any crumbs from your pull over as you stare out the window.Â
âIâm making sure you didnât.âÂ
Your head snapped over at the familiar voice only to see Lily standing at the foot of your bed, looking out of place with her bright purple dress. She looked like she was teetering back and forth between staying out and sprinting away, and you admired her courage after how many times youâve turned down her offer.Â
You glared at Ella but she was no longer there, leaving you and Lily alone.Â
âYouâre just in time then.â You say blandly, standing up from your bed as you make the covers and are careful not to come too close to her. She seemed to notice.Â
âWe canât go about this forever,â she stated, rounding the corner of your bed as she took three steps forward while you took one back, not wanting to be cornered again the way you were that night, âThis silent treatment is killing me.â
âThen die,â you donât mean it and she knows it, but her face wobbles for a second and you watch in horror as tears spring to Lily's eyes.Â
The last time Lily cried the two of you were fifteen and her brothers had effectively ruined the singular dress she had actually been looking forward to wearing by staining it with ink. You spent at least an hour calling her down and trying to rationalize with her until you finally gave up and offered to cut holes in all of their suits.Â
Youâre not sure you could do that now.Â
âIâm sorry!â She sprung herself forward at you with full throttle as she hugged you tightly, âYouâre right! Thereâs nothing wrong with being a romantic!â You donât know what to do as you stand there in shock so you awkwardly pat her back, her long white hair never loose so youâve never really seen it to its full extent.Â
âMy brother and I have been at war with each other trying to put the blame on somebody else but Iâm sorry! You of all people deserve to find love,â she looks up and her eyes just look like oceans and itâs unfair how pretty she looks when she cries because you just look like a mess, âPlease, please forgive me.â
You look as she refuses to pull away from you, clutching desperately onto the thin fabric of your nightgown that your mother reprimanded you for not getting out of, and slowly feel your hands circle around her back as you pull her into a hug.Â
âHonestly,â you shake your head as she looks up at you, cheeks rosy with streaks of tears and her lip wobbles violently, âIâm probably going to be on that pact ten years from now. But I just-â
âWant to try!â She finished your sentence for you, something the two of you always prided in being able to do, âand thatâs respectable too!â
You try not to smile but the corners of your lips tug upwards as you nod, Lily waiting with bated breath as she scanned your reaction.Â
âDonât ever treat me like that again, you hear me?âÂ
She vehemently nods, pulling away as she wipes at her eyes, holding out her oinks finger as she waits for you to latch on. Sure, it was a childish way of making a promise, but Lily was never the serious sort of person. If anything, this is the most youâve ever seen her apologize about something.Â
âI promise with the depths of my soul. If I do, brand me with an iron.â Your eyes widen as you go to disagree but she wonât take it.Â
âI swear.â She repeats gravely.Â
You look at her pinky for another second before you bring yours up, not believing that this is still how the two of you go about making amends.Â
âAlright then,â you heave a sigh, âI forgive you.â
Her face breaks into a wide and toothy smile as she pulls you in for a tighter hug, nearly knocking the air out of your lungs as she pulls back away.Â
âYouâll never regret this, I swear,â she looked radiant, but quickly stopped as she looked down at the ground, trying to gather her thoughts on how to break the news to you, âNow, be prepared for another one.âÂ
You blink slowly, brows furrowed in confusion as you lean on your bedpost, arms crossing as your lips purse.Â
âWhat?âÂ
She almost looks ashamed again, looking at the clock on your wall.Â
âMy motherâs invited you over for dinner. Get ready to see the other Gojo.â
---
Your mother, as difficult as she was to deal with at most times, somehow understood the concept of showing off through a good wardrobe.Â
You wouldnât put any bets on the fact that if your outfits were significantly better you might have had at least one man approach you in all these years, but it certainly could have been a possibility.Â
The cut was lower than all your normal dress, and with the help of your corset, pushed the sisters up a considerable amount.Â
The color was the most flattering youâve ever seen, and through the utilization of crystals and diamonds encrusted in the fabric itself, it shined perfectly when the light hit it.Â
For the first time, you were glad your mother picked out your outfit.Â
Unfortunately, the outfit gave you only so much confidence. When you walked into the Gojo estate, thankfully with Lily on your side, all the memories from that night came flooding back and your stomach flipped upside down.Â
You were glad that Lily was seated next to you at the dinner table as well, but it didnât help that Satoru was seated in front of you, glaring daggers into your face as you tried to avoid looking at him.Â
âNow, you didnât tell me about your plans for the next year, with the season already coming to an end.â Their mother, bless her heart, asked as she loaded some peas into her fork, looking at you with her kind eyes as you struggled to think of a good enough answer.Â
âIâm planning on taking a marriage offer up, actually,â you say, trying not to look at Lily for you knew she was already giggling.
In the past five hours, you filled her in on everything, and she decided the best way to get Satoru to say something was if you went with the idea.Â
âOh?â You watched as she perked up in interest, as did the rest of the Gojo family. An offer?Â
âYes,â you nodded, âLord Cornwallis, actually, if youâve heard of him?âÂ
Lily was gleaming as she saw her brother clench his jaw as he stared at the side of your face that was still looking at their mother.Â
âL-lord Cornwallis?â You felt bad for lying to her, but you could just come back later and say youâve changed your mind, âHe must be at least-â
âNinety-nine?â You answered for her as her cheek warmed, âSome say heâs just in his prime, yes.âÂ
She drank some of her wine.Â
âIsnât that desperate?â Satoru finally said and you heard a loud clatter from the end of the table as their mother angrily sat her cup down, glaring at her son.Â
âSatoru!â She exclaimed, the rest of the girls and boys watching in tense silence as they waited for your reply.Â
âItâs alright,â you shrugged, fiddling with the bracelet on your wrist, âAnd yes, it could come off as desperate. However, I would rather go to a man who finds no problem in courting me rather than somebody whoâd tell the whole world just how much it would disgust him to be seen with me.â
You could swear you heard a tooth crack.Â
âIâm sorry, am I missing something-â One of the brothers piped up but Satoru acted as if he hadnât heard him.Â
âWell if that man were drunk out of his wits-â
âThen he let his sober thoughts reign free.â You finish for him, nostrils flaring as Satoru twisted the ring on his forefinger back and forth.Â
âAgain, Miss Gojo, Iâm simply thinking over his offer.â You finish, seeing how she could barely take her eyes off of her son as she blinked towards you, giving a shaky smile as she nodded.Â
âOf course, theres noâŚno problem in that.â She swallowed uncomfortably, as did everybody else. You peeked over at Lily to find her just as you suspected, beaming with silent joy.Â
âIf you wouldnât mind, I think my dress has come a bit undone. Iâm going to call for somebody to fix it.â You say, excusing yourself as you try to go ahead with the plan you had set in the first place.Â
âMake him mad, really mad. Say something about Cornwallis, he despises him,â Lily muttered, sitting cross-legged on your bed as she urged you to listen to her directions, âThen excuse yourself. Say youâve got to use the privy or something, doesnât matter.â
You nodded, listening intently as she laid it on thick for what she had been picking up on for the past couple of days.Â
âGo upstairs and find his room, you know where it is. Be quick with it too, but thereâs this box on his desk thatâs full of letters. I swear on my Austen collection that there is a letter with your name on it.â
You felt your heart tumble.Â
âAre you sure?â You asked, glancing at the clock to make sure you wouldnât be late to dinner.Â
âPositive. And Iâd get it if I could, but heâs so secretive with his room that this is probably the one time itâs going to be unlocked. Heâd never suspect anybody going snooping at this hour.â
You grinned, knowing that if you finally got that little something to use against him, heâd have no choice but to grovel at your feet for the rest of his life.Â
You quickly scampered up the stairs, telling one of their mates that youâd be able to fix your dress on your own and that youâd be stashed away in Lily's room for the time being, and mentally times yourself as you quickly paced through the halls, looking for the familiar dark oak that would be Satoruâs room.Â
Just when you were about to get lost in their maze of a house, you stopped triumphantly behind the last door at the end of the hall, staring deeply at it as you weighed your options.Â
You quickly caved, slowly reaching out to the doorknob to see if it was locked.Â
It swung open, and you let out a sigh of relief and looked around a final time to make sure that nobody had followed you before you fully let yourself inside.Â
It was dark, and you left the door slightly open so that the light from the halls could sleep in a bit, and you went to work on locating the box on his desk that Lily had described to you.Â
You squint your eyes, wincing as you bumped into furniture as you made your way to the corner of the large room, blindly reaching and grabbing for anything on the mahogany desk that would resemble a box.Â
You let out a sound of triumph as you found a square-shaped glass-feeling thing filled to the brim with papers, holding it upwards to the sliver of light as you quickly ran through the letters with your fingers and you tried to find one with your name on it.Â
They seemed like they were all unsent, with many of them labeled to his mother or siblings, and a few to his friends, but you didnât find any of them labeled to you, and you quickly felt your heart and hopes sink. This was taking far too long.
Just as you were about to give up, you passed a smaller shaped letter with cursive that looked familiar, in the sense that you had seen it addressed before, and pulled it out only to see your name staring back at you.Â
A part of you almost wanted to sink into the chair behind the desk, your heart beating rapidly in the small vastness of your ribcage as you held it back up to the light, seeing a note tucked neatly away through the transparency of the envelope.Â
Your nimble fingers went to rip the seal of wax off, but stopped as the door swung open.Â
âWhat the hell are you doing?â Satoru stood at the doorway, blocking the rest of the light as his shadow cast over you.Â
You dropped the letter, quickly hiding it behind your back as he stepped in, getting closer to you as you abruptly stood up, trying to come up with a feasible lie as you rounded away from his desk, trying to get away from him and his massive build.Â
âOh?â You looked around as if suddenly realizing this wasnât the place you were supposed to be, âIs this not Lilyâs room? Silly me, I couldnât make it out in the dark. Iâll be leaving now if youâll excuse meâŚâ You turned around, brushing past him but stopping when you felt his long fingers circle your wrist, turning you around as his eyes squinted.Â
âBullshit,â you flinched, never having heard him curse before as his hands felt around yours, finding the letter you were doing a terrible job of hiding, âYou know this house better than your own. Why the hell are you in my room?âÂ
You didnât say anything as he brought your hand out from behind your back, opening up your closed fist with much ease to reveal the crumpled-up envelope. Your chest heaved up and down, waiting with bated breath as he stared silently at the letter. You balled your fists back up again, stepping away from him as he followed you quickly in your footsteps.Â
âGive that to me y/n,â his voice was low and commanding, unlike anything youâve ever heard before, and if you weren't in your rebellious mood (and somewhat in your independent, not totally in-love-with-him mood) you would have caved, but you shook your head, looking behind you as to make sure you didnât back into his bed frame.Â
âItâs got my name on it.â You argued, knowing it was a terrible excuse, and you watched him chuckle darkly, knowing that you had no good reason for being in his room and sifting through his letters.Â
âAnd yet it was in my room, in my letterbox, on my desk.â He snapped, eyes a deep blue and different from the usual lightness they carried. He wasnât joking and he wasnât lying, he needed that letter back.Â
Which just made you want it even more.Â
You didnât know what to do, so the only logical thing in your sporadic mind was to shove it down your dress, hiding it in your chest as Satoru watched your movements like a hawk, not saying anything as you defiantly showed him your now empty hands.Â
âGet it now Satoru,â you challenged him, not realizing you had backed up into the wall until your head lightly bounced off from it, wincing at the sting as you looked back behind you.Â
He didnât say anything, and it seemed like his mind was running as quickly as it could as he tried to deal with whatever it was you were doing. Instead, he just three more languid steps forward, nearly face to face with you as he stared down at you, eyes darting from yours to your lips and chest.Â
Under any other circumstances, you would have felt like shedding your clothes off from how heated you felt under his gaze. Here, your only resort was to keep them on, to see what was so important about that letter.Â
âI came to find you to apologize,â his voice is low and calm, his cool breath hitting your cheek as you struggle to keep your composure, âTo be civil. To tell you that I didnât mean anything I said that night.âÂ
Despite your mixed emotions, you felt your brows furrow at his select choice of words.Â
âAre you here to tell me now that you actually meant every word?â You couldnât stop the words as they tumbled out of your mouth, knowing that the answer would probably send you into a state you could never get out of as the person youâve loved for the majority of your life confirms your biggest fears.
But shockingly, he just shakes his head, his lips pink and plush and youâve never found yourself focusing on them more than you are now.Â
If only you knew that he felt the same as he looked at you.Â
âNo,â he stepped closer, if possible, but still had room to shove him away. But you didnât, not now, you couldnât, didnât want to as his nose nudged yours a bit, your lashes fluttering against your cheek as your lips parted, waiting for him to do something,Â
âIâll show you that I didnât mean them.â
You couldnât breathe, your lungs contracting as his face fell towards yours, your lips meeting ever so slowly as they finally landed on yours, soft and somehow delicate as they pushed against yours, finalizing the kiss as he began to move them.Â
Youâve never kissed anybody before, often dreaming about it as you lay in bed hopelessly in love, but never thought youâd be here from the man youâve imagined on the other side doing it with him.Â
He moved slowly as if he knew that this was your first time, and you didnât know how to handle your emotions as he angled his chin to get closer to you, his lips capturing you in such a heated and feverish pace that you knew you werenât going to be able to sleep tonight as you thought back on it.Â
His hands slowly came up to your waist, tugging you flush against his body as your hands somehow found their way behind his neck, finger curling into his long strands of arctic white as he groaned against you when you tugged a bit, the sound coming from deep within his chest.Â
You were impatient, always have been, and it probably took him a little bit by surprise as you quickened the pace, hungry after so many years of starving for this as you pushed against him for more fervor, feeling him smile slightly against your lips as he met you in the middle, fingers digging into the fabric of your dress as you whined slightly as the feeling.Â
He nipped at your lips, his tongue poking out from in between yours, and you absentmindedly opened your mouth a little bit to make room for him, heart and mind working in tandem as he brought up a hand to cradle the back of your head, making sure it didnât hit the wall as he pushed against you.Â
It was messy and hurried, and for once, it felt as if he felt the same you were feeling. As if he too wanted this, needed this more than air itself, and that thought alone made your mind stop functioning.Â
Your hands moved from his neck to his chest, fingers clutching onto the satin fabric of his suit, wrinkling the fabric as your noses bumped against each other, sheer desperation showing from the two of you.Â
âViscount Gojo?âÂ
The two of you almost jumped at the knock that sounded from the door.Â
âYour mother is asking where you are. Sheâs worried about the lady as well,â Fred didnât peek his head in, and for that you were grateful. You were sure you looked like a total mess at the moment, but Satoru spoke, glancing at the door as he took a deep breath, almost as if it was his first time breathing in a couple of minutes.Â
âTell her that weâre working things out. Itâll take a bit more time.â His voice sounded steady enough, but from where you were standing you could see how swollen his lips were, the fact that they were red and glistening with sweat. His hand on your waist tightened as if he didnât want to let you go, and your hand lay flat against his chest.
âOf course,â Fred answered, âTake your time.â He shut the door completely, and the two of you waited until you heard his footsteps becoming softer and softer until you could no longer hear them.Â
You waited, looking in the direction for another second before you looked up at him only to see his eyes gauging yours for a reaction, somehow a storm going on behind them as he battled twenty different emotions.Â
âIâm still hurt Satoru,â you whisper, his eyes never changing but his shoulders tense a bit as you drop your hands away from him, as if you were suddenly coming to your senses and realizing what you had just done, âI can't forgive you this easily.â
You donât know how to handle your feelings sometimes, and sometimes they catch up to you later than they should. You could still hear his words from that night ringing around your mind and nothing was stopping it no matter how hard you tried.Â
âCome get the letter when youâre ready to apologize with more than just your lips.âÂ
You look back up at him one more time before you push away, feeling him lightly move away from you to give you space as you smooth out the front of your dress, touching your face to make sure that none of the makeup and powder that was swiped against your face wasnât wrecked as you left.Â
You donât look back as you left him silently in his room, shutting the door behind you as you stopped, taking a deep breath to calm your nerves as you went back down to dinner.Â
---
A week passed since your night with Satoru, and youâve come to terms with the fact that he regrets it.Â
It hurts, it hurts even more when you convince yourself that he probably was trying to take pity on you and test how true his old words were, but you couldnât spiral, knowing that it would cause even more turmoil.Â
Lily came by regardless, under the impression that you and her brother made up and are on better terms, and you're in no rush to tell her the truth of what happened.Â
She asked about the note, but you insisted that you couldnât find it. She grumbled that he probably threw it away after she pestered him constantly about it.Â
âWhat about Lord Balfour?â She was sprawled out on your bed, her legs crossed resting it up against the wall with her head at the opposite end, looking on a piece of parchment in which she had gone around asking for men looking for marriage (and a true romantic connection, she stressed).Â
âHm, too bald,â you said, sitting in your vanity, washing off the rest of the powder on your face as you dipped the soft cotton cloth back into the pitcher of water as you looked at her through the mirror, âIsnât he a year younger than us?â
She pouted as she thought, looking back to her list as she crossed off that name.Â
âCount Alexei?â She seemed to like this one and you set your towel down, trying to place a face to the name.Â
âIsnât he from Russia? Wouldnât it be difficult for him to come back and forth?â You asked and she nodded, although she seemed more sad that you didnât want him.Â
âHave you just gone around the ton asking if anybodyâs looking for marriage?â You teased and she turned around, sitting up as she wiped the hair out of her face.Â
âI take your journey to find true love very serious,â she argued and you snorted, knowing that it was a kid if that and the fact that she liked judging the men of the higher class, âAre you complaining?â
âNo, of course not.â You turn around from your chair as you face her, urging her to continue.Â
âDuke Cambell?â She looked up from the list with a raised brow, only to find you looking the same, taking more time to consider the name.Â
âHe explicitly stated heâd consider marriage? With me?â You tilt your head to the side. Surely it would be too good to be true. He wasnât too pretty, nobody was like Satoru, but he wasnât that bad to look at either.Â
âHe seemed quite eager about it, actually.â She said, and you smiled a bit, feeling like a silly schoolgirl with the way you ducked your head.Â
âHeâs a bit shy, isnât he?â You said with a little giggle and she snorted, nodding as she circled his name and put a question mark next to it.Â
âJust means heâs more apt to moan louder,â she said blandly and your mouth dropped, burrowing your face in your hands at her very open nature. Even after ten years it sometimes caught you off guard.Â
âLily!â You shouted, trying to hold in your laugh, and she just looked at you as if you should have expected this as she rose from your bed, stretching her arms above her head as she let out a frantic yawn.Â
The sun had already set and she knew her mother would be expecting her to arrive soon, and you went to stand but stopped you.Â
âNo need to stand, Iâll bid farewell from here.âÂ
You rolled your eyes at her dramatics, picking up the cloth again as you dabbed at your cheeks.Â
âI assume youâll be here tomorrow?â Crossing your legs as she shrugged as if it was the most obvious answer in the world.Â
âYes. In fact, Iâll leave this prized list with you so that you can mull it over,â she walked over a bit and set it down on the top of your vanity, looking at you as she put a solemn hand on your shoulder, âDo think over Count Alexis. He is rather dreamy.âÂ
You chuckled, waving goodbye to her as she left the door with a litter thud, blowing kisses as you snorted at her exaggerated act, turning back around to your mirror as you wiped away the remaining bits of your makeup.Â
You were already in your dressing gown, the material soft and light on your skin as you set the cloth back down, drying your face off with another one as you got ready to sleep.Â
With meticulous care you took your earrings off and began to work on your necklace but struggled with the finicky clasp, your thumb slipping just as you were about to get it. You let out a quick groan of frustration, shutting your eyes as you tried not to lose your temper over a necklace.
âDo you need help with that?âÂ
You were getting better at controlling your reactions, but your eyes snapped over to the top of your mirror as he stood there, shutting the door behind him. Your hands fell to your lap as you silently seethed.Â
Ella was never going to hear the end of it.Â
You said nothing and he quietly walked over to where you sat with your back to him, opting to look at him through your mirror as his slender fingers slowly came up to your neck.Â
âIâm getting rid of my maid.â You mutter eyes dropped to your lap as you try to control your breath as his fingertips touch your delicate skin, gingerly getting to work of undoing the clasp. He didnât say anything and the only sound that filled the room was your slow little puffs of air, trying to get your pulse to stop from doing the strange rhythmic beating it always did when you were around him, as if he somehow became the conductor of your heart.Â
You heard a small click and the necklace became undone, and he gathered it in his palm as he set it down next to your little trinkets, dropping his hands from your shoulder as his cerulean eyes found yours once again, and you looked away, his deep stare burning through yours.Â
âDonât,â his voice came out rough as if he hadnât made much use of it for a while, âSheâs always turned me away when I came asking for you. I weasled my way through her right now, almost blew my cover when Lily was leaving.âÂ
Oh.
âIâm over it.â No, you werenât, but you wouldnât admit that out loud.
You opened up the drawer to the left of you, moving some little cases of jewelry around as you found the letter you had hidden away as you brought it out, setting it on the desk as you stood from your chair, pushing it back in as you faced him, âTake it. I didnât read it.â Despite how much you wanted to, you just couldnât bring yourself to stoop that low and read through something he didnât want you to see.Â
He glanced over at the letter and then at you, taking the letter with careful movements as he found the letter opener scattered on your desk, ripping through the wax as he opened it up, passing the envelope back to you.Â
âRead it.âÂ
You certainly werenât expecting that.Â
âWhat?â You couldnât blink, looking at his outstretched hand that held the very thing that had been bothering you as if it was nothing, âI donât-âÂ
âGo on,â he urged quietly, his voice caught in the back of his throat, âRead it out loud. Please.âÂ
You looked at him once more to make sure he wasnât going crazy before you gently took it from his hands, your fingers brushing past each other as you opened it up, taking out the letter as you unfolded it, taking a deep breath as you prepared yourself for the worst.Â
âIâm terrible at writing letters, you should know,â you start, squinting as you move closer to your candle so that you can read it better, âAnd you should know that Iâve written this twenty other times. I have-
âTwenty balled-up pieces of paper next to me,â Satoru finished the sentence, not looking at the letter once as he read it from memory, âIf only you could see the mess,â he paused, his hands shaking a bit as he continued, âI apologize for not sending as many letters to you as I should, but aside from my travels which have proven to do nothing other than make me regret leaving, I only have one other thing left to tell you.Â
âI love you. Iâm in love with you. I thought that it would do me some good to leave and get some time to think about how bad it would be if I said out loud that I was in love with the girl whoâs my sister's best friend, but Iâve simply gone mad over needing to see you again. Iâm in Paris, which is coincidentally the city of love but Iâve grown bitter and resentful over the fact that the woman I love is an ocean away from me. I canât do it anymore. No, scratch that, no, I canât do this other letterâŚâÂ
â...Itâs too pathetic. Youâre worth more than this.â You concluded, reading along because you couldnât be yourself to look up at him, knowing that you simply would break apart and couldnât take it as you heard the three words youâve wanted to hear from the man that you never thought would say them.Â
You looked at the paper, eyes scanning each word again as you let out a heavy sigh, feeling like you were living in a dream that was wrapping its arms slowly around you and whisking you away.Â
âThat night, I projected. I donât know why I said what I said, I just know that thinking it over told me everything I needed to know and I acted like a coward and a fool and I hurt you when really, I love you. I love you, Iâve never stopped. I burn for you, and I always will.â He whispered, his eyes wet with unshed tears as he cleared his throat, wiping at his nose as he sniffled.Â
Youâve never seen him like this, exposed and raw. But you knew that you mirrored his emotions, knew that you were in the same state that he was for he carefully brought his hand up to your cheek, wiping a tear away as he cupped your face in his hands.Â
âI know that it would be too much to ask for your forgiveness, but please, I donât know how much longer I can go without at least seeing your face, hearing your voice, your laugh, youâre kind, kind heart.â His hands trailed down your face, down your arms, and your waist, settling on your hips as he ducked his head downward, tears sliding down the curve of his nose as he did something unexpected.Â
The Viscount Gojo Satoru began to kneel.Â
You froze, looking down in shock as he bowed his head in shame and apology.Â
ââToru, please, I,â your voice broke and you quickly wiped your tears away, taking his hands that were sprawled out across your waist as you held them, not knowing how to handle this display of vulnerability as you gently made him look up at you, âJust tell me one thing.âÂ
His thumb caressed the back of your hand, giving a soft nod as he whispered; âanything,â and his hand moved up your waist, holding your back as your hands unknowingly went to his hair, moving it away from his face as your fingers twirled and played with his white strands, basking in the sense of having him at his knees for you.Â
âWhy did you wait so long to come back?â Your voice is barely audible as it cracks, a year of missing him and ten years of longing for him coming out as he shakes his head, almost as if he was more remorseful about it than you could ever imagine, and he shifted so that he wasnât resting on his ankles anymore, digging deep into his pocket as he brought out a little box.Â
âI went back to Japan. I was trying to find this little ring my father gave my mother back when he started to pine after her,â he opened up the box, a delicately cut blue diamond rind resting on a thin gold band stared back at you, shining in the candlelight, âI wanted to give it to you as a promiseâŚâ and he trailed off, a blush spreading across his cheeks as he suddenly became a bit embarrassed, pocketing the box again as he looked back up at you.Â
âWhat was the promise?â You can barely hear your words over the thumping of your heart.Â
He swallows, slowly coming to standing back up, never losing his hold on you, clutching onto your thin nightgown as if it was the only thing grounding him to reality.Â
âThat Iâd marry you one day.â He whispered back, his voice hushed as if he didnât want them to escape the vicinity of your room, this shared space between the two of you in which you stripped each other bare to the soul, only the find that they longed to be in each other's place even when they were miles apart.Â
Just as he did so many nights ago, he leaned closer to you, giving you time and space to push him away, to yell, to scream, but you didnât, nudging his nose with yours as your lips found each other, this time quick and rough and not wanting to be patient because there was no room for such a thing.Â
He let out a small groan as you tugged on the hairs at the back of his nape, pushing you further down until your back hit one of your windows, feeling the cool night air from the glass as it traveled through the thin cotton of your slip
It seemed like something in him was finally let go, and you as well, and everything came tumbling down in the best way possible.Â
It was so messy and rushed and desperate that you felt like you were going to faint, the air from your lungs being stolen by his hungry and greedy lips as he pushed back roughly against you, needing to taste you, feel you, or else he simply wouldnât make it.Â
Satoru tapped the back of your thighs, urging you to wrap your legs around his torso as you pulled away slightly, questioning him as he scoffed at your doubt.Â
âI spent a year getting bigger and stronger for you,â he murmurs against your lips, âand the first thing you said when you saw me was oh. Come on,â he nipped at your lips, his boyish and charming smile growing when you whimpered, âTest me out.âÂ
You gave in, standing on your toes as you did what he asked, and you let out a little laugh of surprise at how he wasted no time wrapping his arms tightly around your waist as he smirked, going away from the ball as he led you to your bed, basking in the sound of your twinkling laughter as you admired him in all his glory.Â
âI shouldnât have doubted you,â you tease and he snorts, fixing your gown as he hovers above you. He was huge, so much bigger than you anticipated in your imagination, but it was so much better than you ever could have thought.Â
âIâd never lie to you,â he promised, pressing another chaste kiss to your lips that left you breathless as he continued downwards, pressing kisses down your jaw, and your neck, spending time as he sucked at one of your vital points, enjoying the way you sounded like you had run a marathon.Â
He looks stunning here; his lips look bruised and swollen, pink and wet with spit. He couldnât keep his eyes off of your body, and if you werenât crazy about how he looked at you, you wouldâve shielded yourself away in embarrassment.Â
But he didnât give you any time to think it over, pushing past your loose nightgown as he pressed delicate pecks to your shoulders and upper chest region, looking up at you to make sure it was okay to continue.Â
You quickly nodded, eager to see what he was going to do.Â
âMind if I take this off?â He asks, tugging at the ends of it as you look at him from beneath your lashes, trying to feel indifferent as you shrug, but the way you smile giddily gives away just how badly you want him to.Â
âI wouldnât mind.â You help him move it upwards, your arms coming out from the sleeves as the chilly air hits your naked skin, and you suddenly realize just how out in the open you are compared to him.Â
Out of second nature, you go to cover your chest but he tsks, gently pushing your hands away as he eyes your breasts, looking like he had just come back from staring at the sistine chapel with the way he looks at you.Â
Your nipples harden from how cold it was, and he slowly dips his head down to one of your tits, kissing the soft and supple skin as he inches closer to your bud, finally latching his mouth onto it as you throw your head back, arching your back into his lips as he sucks like his life depends on it.Â
âS-shit, âToru, so good,â you mewl, wrapping your hands around his neck as he flattens his tongue against your nipple, his teeth grazing the sensitive area as you whine even louder, not seeming to care if anybody outside your door could hear.Â
His other hand lathes onto your other one, not wanting to leave her unattended as he pinches your nipple between his two fingers, twisting it just enough to make you shut your eyes at how good the attention feels.Â
âLet me hear you,â he groans into your skin, looking up at you as you try to cover up your mouth with your hand, âIâll stop if you cover up that pretty mouth of yours.âÂ
You simply nod, leaving your shaky hand to grip your bed sheets as he switches his mouth and hand with each other, giving you different sensations to wrap your hands around as you feel a deep part of your pulse, needing more of him.Â
ââToru, please,â your voice comes out shaky as he releases your tit with a pop, his hands going down to hold onto your hips as you bring his chin up for another kiss of swapping spit with him, growing to appreciate the lewdness of it all as you lay feather light kisses on his jawline, feeling him shudder beneath you, âWanâ more.âÂ
At any other time, he would have drawn this out, would have teased and prodded at you to use your words, to tell him where you needed him most, but he couldnât wait with you, wanting to have a taste of you himself.Â
So his wolfish grin comes back, his hand traveling down your stomach, stopping just above your mound as he cocks a brow at the way you seem to grow impatient, reaching the place you seemed to have in mind.Â
âHere?â He asked quietly, his pointer finger moving to find your clit as you let out a quiet gasp, his expert fingers having nothing on your inexperienced ones. Sure youâve touched yourself deep into the night when you made sure everybody was asleep, but it never felt like this.Â
You couldnât speak, so you nodded again, and that seemed to be good enough for Satoru as his finger moved down to your lips, a deep groan coming from within his chest as he felt how wet you were, and prodded his finger at your tight walls, slowly pushing past them as he seemed to be in a trance.Â
You sucked him in so delightfully, pulsing against his as your slick stained his finger, making it easier for him to fuck you with a little bit more pace, careful not to hurt you, as he brought it back up to circle at your clit, trying to find what places you liked to be teased most.Â
âO-oh my god,â your eyes rolled back in your head as his long find pushed back against your gummy walls, his other thumb finding your nub as you whined even louder, not used to feeling this good, spreading your legs out even further as you tried to make room for him.Â
âThere you go, sâperfect,â he said against your skin, dipping down as he moved a hand to keep your thighs further apart, âMind if I have a taste?â And you were in another dimension, just cradling his neck as you pushed him to go further.Â
He chuckled darkly, nearly going insane as he neared your glistening pussy, eyes growing dark as he moved his fingers away so that his tongue could have its turn, and you swore you almost came right there.Â
He licked gingerly, savoring you first as he groaned, his thumb never giving up on circling and massaging your clit, but he began to eat you out as his life depended on it, licking and sucking like you were his last meal.Â
ââToru, âToru, fuck!â You screamed, biting your lip harshly as you kept your finger tight around his hair, âDonât stop, please!âÂ
âF-fuck,â he murmured, coming up for a quick breath as he looked at you from his long white lashes, âFucking kill me if I ever stop, okay?âÂ
He goes back in with the same amount of fervor, your chest moving up and down as you arch into his mouth, your jaw going slack as you quickly feel that rope in your stomach tightening, embarrassed at coming so early but knowing that there was no way you could stop yourself with the way he fingered you out at the same time he ate you out.Â
âIâm yours,â he said against your skin, âIâll always be yours.â It was out of place, but it seemed like he was branding it into your skin so that everybody else knew, knew that he belonged solely to you.
It was too much, and you felt like you were slowly losing your ability to think, talk, or do anything, and the only thing you could feel was him, and you felt it all coming to a crescendo as his mouth latched onto your clit, letting it all go as you came into his mouth.Â
ââM c-coming, mmmm fuck!â You couldnât even believe the sounds you were making as you clenched around his finger, your essence coating his chin and hand as your legs were trembling, glad that he held a stable hand on your waist.Â
You saw white for a couple of seconds, taking even longer to catch your breath, your tits rising and falling with each heave, and you suddenly felt like you came back down to earth, peeking out from an eye to see Satoru smiling down at you, his face soft and you whined in shock at what just happened, hiding your face into one of your pillows as he laughed lowly, the sound dripping down your ears like warm honey.Â
âYou just came around me, no need to be modest now.â He gently moved your face away from the sanctuary of your pillow so that you could look at him again, and he leaned down, pressing one final kiss to your lips, letting you taste yourself on him as you let out a muffled moan.Â
âHow do you feel?â He asked as he pulled away, sitting on his haunches, letting you drape the blanket around your sweaty chest as you tried to sit up, shaking a bit as you tried to recover from your mind-breaking orgasm.Â
âGood,â you say groggily, wiping at your eyes as you give him a lazy, languid smile, âReally good.âÂ
âYeah?â He asks, chuckling as you nod, finding his hands as you play with his long fingers, and he lets you watch as you let them entangle with each other, somehow feeling more connected through this than the previous activity as you slowly pull him back down towards you, wanting nothing more than to curl into his chest.Â
âGive me a second love,â he wanted the same thing, but he pulled away, âLet me clean you up.âÂ
You didnât fight it and let him go, watching as he found the pitcher of water on your desk as he found a clean rag and wet it, coming back to your bed until his eyes caught something under the sheets.Â
He picked it up, reading it as he sat down next to you, running the cold towel across your thighs as you let out a little whimper at the temperature. He pressed an apologetic kiss to your forehead as he turned the paper around in silent questioning.Â
Your eyes widened, trying to take it away but he held it above your head. If you had more fight in you, you might have wrestled for it, but you gave up, letting him clean you up as he tried not to laugh at how measly it was.Â
âI doubt Cambell would know how to make you come.â He finally says, throwing the rag away somewhere as you groan, pushing his face slowly away as you try to fight the giddy laugh that was going to bubble its way from your chest.Â
âStop! Lily was just trying to help!â You argue and he waves his hands, loosening the buttons of his tunic as he crawls in next to you, pulling you flush against him as he kisses the tip of your nose.Â
âItâs fine love,â he nestles his nose in your hairline, smiling when you hitch a leg over his, âYouâre mine now.âÂ
You look up at him, tracing over his features with the light touch of your fingertips as he leans into your warmth.Â
âDo you promise?âÂ
He gives a single nod, sliding the delicate ring over your finger, and closes his hand around yours.Â
âPromise.âÂ

tw: female reader, obsessive behavior, captivity, fantasy lore, abuse, murder mention, suggestive (?)
"You seem to be upset."
He's leaning against the window not too far away from you. Not too close as well - just far enough for you to feel at ease.
"Aren't you a mind - reader." You respond under your breath, trying to focus on the book you're currently reading - but the letters are escaping you, and you find yourself re-reading the same paragraph for the third time. He sighs, much like a disappointed father, before stepping towards you. And if you flinch just slightly, he doesn't pretend to notice or care.
"What is wrong, my flower?" The man gestures theatrically, soft velvet voice unbecoming of the monster he is flowing easily into the open air. You don't know what to say, really. It's been two years - or so you think, there is no way to keep track of time in this kingdom, not that time goes the same way in the elfen world as it does in the human, yet the part of you still capable of logical thought seems to think so. Two years, and there is very little you haven't already said. Very little left to be said, so your conversations are mostly rehearsed repetitions of what you already know. What you already fear - that you're going to die here. Or even worse. That you've become incapable of aging, so very consumed by this foreign land you detest that you've given up death for a life of boring, purposeless immortality.
"Don't I shower you with lavish gifts?" The noble moves closer, stalking towards you - observing you as if you're a butterfly pinned to a wooden frame under a microscope. "Don't I buy you the shiniest jewels? Not even the queen herself owns such sparkling emeralds." He scoffs, painfully used to your lack of response. You clear your throat, turning a new page - having little to recall about the last. It's completely meaningless just like all the other pages in all the other books you read. How funny, you think. In that distant, dreamy past of yours you were too busy to read - busy with work, busy with family, busy with friends. Busy with life. Now nothing gets in the way of your reading, you have all the time in the world - but there's no one to share the knowledge with. No one to spoil the ending. No time limits. No goal to it all, no final destination. So you read, and you soak the pages with salty tears not remembering a word.
"I am grateful for all the treasures you give me, my Lord." You answer nonchalantly, keeping your pointer at the end of the paper in a desperate attempt to find the sentence exactly where you left it off. You can feel him move closer to you - and the only indication of your growing fear are the shivers that travel down your spine with the beat of your violently full, thumping heart.
"Don't I provide you with all the entertainment your little human heart could possibly bear?" The duke clicks his long sharp nails together once against the other - an ugly metallic sound echoes deep into the ceiling reminiscent of a dying forest clow. "There has never been a lack of wine or music or dance in my court. I've gifted you more golden dresses than you can wear in this life. I've written you more poems than you can read." He keeps going, describing every little thing he's done for you, despite the fact that you've never asked for any of it.
"I admire your taste for indulgence, my Lord." You repeat almost automatically, the praises sitting on your tongue just waiting to be spilt from parted honey lips. Your eyes are glued to the book, but you've given up on reading long ago. Now you're simply trying not to cry - focusing your eyes at one word at a time and blinking repeatedly, manically, feeling as if the world with end the moment you let him see your weakness. You can't believe you still have so much pain in you - enough to feel loss and anger and, what's even worse, hope. Hope that one day you'll be free again.
"And tell me, flowerâ" His fist wraps around your low ponytail, forcing you to look up at him and meet his eyes for the first time tonight. What's staring back at you might as well be the bottom of the ocean itself, misty and dark, cold and unknown. Human eyes convey so much affection - so much care that you can never mistake it for anything else. With elves it's different - you can spend centuries looking for a hint of kindness, and you'll only get lost in those beatiful bottomless pits. Shiny and sparkling and completely empty. "Don't I give you love? Don't I embrace you tightly every night?" His voice lowers dangerously, barely above a whisper.
"I don't understand what more you could possibly want. Should I prove myself to you? Should I slay a dragon for you? Perhaps I could tie the heads of your enemies with a pretty bow and give them to you as a wedding gift, hmm?" He's babbling incoherently, nails digging into your scalp with unyealding grip. "Would that finally, finally make you happy, beloved?"
"No, no, please let go." You cry out in agony, wriggling out of his hold - but he's too strong, too massive to move. "I'm happy, I'mâ" You sob pitifully, weakly pushing at his chest. "I'm happy with you. Please, you make me so happy, just please let go. And please don't hurt anyone."
He slowly pulls away, chest heaving in and out wildly. The scariest part is always his face. It remains unbothered - cold and defined like a statue of a god, his true feelings hidden by a mask of barely contained rage.
"You're happy with me?" He raises an eyebrow, foot stomping on the ground impatiently. You nod hesitantly, too shaken up to comprehend what you're even agreeing to. "Then prove it. Show me just how happy I make you." He grabs your wrist, pulling you face-first into his hard chest. "Do it, and I might reconsider my other more... inhumane methods of courtship." His lips twist into a cruel smirk. "And may the Gods help you."
As you sink to your knees you try to think of what book to read next - but no title comes to mind.

Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing) - Explain
Requested: yes
Prompt: 18) "My mum thinks we're dating."
Warnings: Max being dumb asf
Y/n and Victoria had been friends for as long as they could remember. They would visit eachothers houses, carpool to school, go shopping on the weekends; you name it, they did it and they did it together. Now both girls had a set of rules for eachother and Victoria's number one rule was not a surprise at all; her brother was off limits. Y/n didn't have a problem with it because well, Max was older and they rarely talked. Even as children she didn't like him that way, mainly because as a child she thought he looked like a strange lizard of some sort. When Max became a Formula One driver, Y/n found herself with Victoria less and less due to her still having to stay in school, whilst Victoria travelled the world with her brother for a good part of the academic year. But it didn't tarnish their friendship in any way.
In fact, once Y/n graduated from high-school, Victoria managed to get her to a few races that the whole Verstappen family attended. She grew closer with the family as a whole and even became one of the regulars in the paddock after a while. However, Y/n went on to study in Italy and her paddock appearances were significantly lowered to once or twice a year.
The weekend of Monza 2023 was a special one to say the least. Y/n smiled as she walked into the paddock with Victoria, like she did every other time. The cameras took photos, like they did every other year and they walked straight to the hospitality. "I missed this place." Y/n sighed as she looked around the hospitality, holding her godson Luka's hand as he waddled about the place. "I know. They've changed a few things since you've been here last." Victoria smiled as she wheeled the stroller through the paddock. "And where is the golden boy himself?" Y/n asked, obviously referring to Victoria's now two-time world champion brother. "He's with Mama. They're having their weekly lunch like they usually do." Y/n nodded. "I can't wait to chill in the hospitality. I'd argue it'd my favourite place."
Just as she said she would, Y/n sat in the hospitality of Red Bull. She got her usual place; a table by the window that overlooked the whole paddock, and close enough to Ferrari so she could get a glimpse of Charles Leclerc walking by. All heads snapped around as the heard large footsteps pounding up the stairs and there appeared a delirious looking Max Verstappen. They locked eyes and Max began walking over to her quite quickly. Did he really miss her that much?
"Hi, Max. How are you-" Max sits down rapidly, making Y/n freeze and look at the dutchman as if he had two heads. "I have a problem. Well, no. We- we have a problem." Max said, stumbling on his words. "You look like you've just seen a ghost." Y/n chuckled as she continued to scroll through her phone. "I- I think I really messed up." Max muttered. Y/n scoffed in reply. "Can't be worse than the time you-" She paused and looked at the familiar face of Max's I fucked up face. "What did you do?" She asked, not putting the phone down. "I- You're going to hate me." Max said. "What have you done?" She asked again. "My mum thinks we're dating." Max blurted out, leaving both of them in stunned silence. "She what?!" She put her phone down and stood up. "I know! It was really dumb!" Max repeated over and over again. "Max! Why did you tell her that!"
"It was an accident!" Max replied defensively. "What exactly did you say?!" Y/n asked. "Well she said we would make a cute couple and I kind of joked that well, what if we were but nobody knew. And then she started smiling like that and asking questions so I just went with it so now-" He paused. "Now she thinks we're together." Max mumbled the last bit. "Max, you need to tell her we aren't!" Y/n said. "But why? She seems so happy-"
"Max! Victoria might actually murder me! I have known her since we were seven!" Y/n whisper shouted. "It'll be fine! She won't know, I am sure of it-"
"Y/n?" Y/n froze as she heard her loving friend Victoria call out her name. Max and Y/n turned to see Victoria walking towards them, almost in the same fashion that Max walked over just a matter of minutes ago. "Victoria, I can explain!"
"Oh I'm so happy for you both! It makes so much sense now! Why you were looking for him this morning, I mean." Vuctoria squealed, engulfing Y/n in a hug. Max stood up chuckling along. "You- you're not mad?" Y/n asked, audibly confused. "Mad? Of course not! Me and Mama have said it many times; that the two of you should be dating. It's about time, to be honest." Y/n smiled and looked between the two Verstappens. "And you! Oh thank goodness you found a nice girlfriend after that last one, she was horrible." Max nodded and shoved his hands into his pockets. "Even Dad is happy about you two!" Max and Y/n didn't know what to say. "And you all want us to...date?"
"Yes! For the longest time. It was so obvious you liked eachother too. So, so obvious." Max looked down at Y/n. The pair's faces turned as red as the Ferrari garage next door. "Well, I'll let you two lovebirds have some alone time. Ill see you both later?" Victoria asked, getting ready to leave. "Yes. Definitely."
"That didn't go how I thought it would." Y/n muttered. "Are we missing something? Do we like eachother but we're just too stupid to tell?" Max asked. "I- I don't know." She whispered. "But, I think we should tell them we aren't together before this gets out of hand." Y/n went to walk, but felt her hand being grabbed. She looked back to see Max. "Or we just play along until it dies down." Max suggested. "That is possibly the most stupid thing you've ever said." Y/n retorted. "Bot really. We both get benefits out of dating. You get recognition for being my girlfriend which comes with brand deals, magazine shoots-"
"I would never date you just for the benefits. I date someone because I love them."
"So so you love me?" Y/n didn't really know how to respond to that. Her mouth opened and closed, searching for the words but she couldn't couldn't a singular sentence. Max's grin widened. "Don't even! I'll see you around." Y/n said storming off, her face red from embarrassment. "Okay. Bye my love!" Max teased. "Shut up!" Did she like him? Did she love him? No! Of course...well....maybe.
