It's been rolling around in my brain the last few days for some reason, but I still hate the family backstory reveals for Sophie and Eliot. I've seen some of the meta for it, but quite frankly, it still makes no sense. If it had been something actually thought of and intentional in the original, I think it could have been so fascinating. I mean, Sophie's willing abandonment of Astrid to contrast with Nate's loss of Sam or Eliot's adoption in contrast with Hardison's and Parker's? Could have been excellent! But they came out of nowhere in Redemption and don't work with these characters.

Sophie was still actively using the fucking alias that she met Astrid under! She met with someone from her past on the show! Like. Quite frankly, that one is unequivocally bullshit that they made up and threw in and pretended could fit with the established canon. (And I'm sorry, but the idea of Sophie abandoning Astrid and never telling Nate about her just... So much of Nate's trauma was rooted in the loss of Sam, and I think that introducing this element after he's gone and unable to respond to it taints Sophie and Nate's relationship in a way bc I'm not exactly sure how Nate would've responded to learning about this but I think that it's something he'd have needed to know. I don't know how to fully express my thoughts on that but yeah.)

As for Eliot, I don't like the adoption aspect literally at all. The way that he would interact with his family and the memory of his family would be different, and I think that it's flat out ridiculous to think that he'd have never mentioned it to the team in the original show, especially when dealing with the kid cases. (I also dislike the biracial adoption as its own element because if Eliot was actually raised by Black parents in the... idk what 80s/90s? That just. doesn't feel congruent with how they write Eliot interacting with PoC, not necessarily in a bad way, but babe, he's written like a white southern man raised in a specific kind of culture that does not jell with that. It also makes Eliot look... really bad that he was apparently raised with the knowledge of how fucked up the military was and his parents' history and made the choices that he did.) Like the show may not have explicitly stated it but the implication of that relationship was vastly fucking different throughout the original show.

Just. These were not backstories that were congruent with their depiction and characters in the original show, and they're also just moves that I don't particularly like or find interesting directions for those characters. There's also something to be said about how it was apparently unacceptable for a woman to not have kids or someone not reconciling with their biological family when that was something that the original show handled a lot better. Out of all the directions to take Sophie and Eliot's stories, that's just not really one that I think was a good idea.

okay re: the "deconstruction" post i just reblogged, gotta say, the absolute most boring way to "deconstruct" the romance genre is usually "what if....the characters....didn't get together at the end :O" unless you've put a lot of work into exploring why they want to be together but ultimately don't work for each other, and found some other nonromantic interesting payoff for all the time spent setting up the two characters' bond. but most of the time i see it done it's just a gotcha sUbVeRtInG eXpEcTaTiOnS twist like "haha the characters don't end up together! aren't you so surprised! isn't this such a deep message about how life doesn't have a happily ever after!" and it's like no, it's fucking lazy, you literally just took the most obvious path for deconstructing romance and didn't put any more thought into it

i know I already reblogged that post about the tekken analysis video and while I haven’t watched the video myself, I can already imagine the takes made about kazuya and man it fucking sucks being a kaz fan who wants the writers to care about their FIRST(tm) protagonist of the series rather than just making him villain of the week while forgetting and even retconning the established backstory he’s had for so long. like people are like “well it’s their story” as if we don’t have a right to criticize it or judge how they treat certain characters esp a character like kazuya with one of the more tragic backstories in the series. sorry for the essay but yea 😕✋

THANK YOU and dont worry and also this is so real. At one point you feel like an insane person for seeing that complexity thats not explored or aknowledged. And even the bad takes like yeah Im mad at the apathy but also the writers themselves never gave kaz smth interesting to do outside of really minor and "too" subtle things from tekken 5 to (lets be real) tekken 7 (he was SO underused for that one and hes supposed to be the co-lead??? But no that went to Akuma???) so i cant say I dont even understand where theyre coming from?

And now that he has the opportunity to finally be touched on with him being the main antagonist again, that his BY FAR MOST TRAGIC backstory can make him more understood (not excused but he kiiinda could be yknow?) as a character, some people are adamant in refusing to see the potential of a complex story and it makes me so mad. And im even more mad that they might even be right because of tekken 6 and 7 and how aggressively convoluted yet STUPID the stories were told there.

i remember eret kept saying how they wanted to do alot of lore stuff but communication was so bad that they never got to do anything much with their character.

it was so frustrating bro. i wish we had the same equality and casualness to everyones lore like we do with the qsmp.

looking back, everyone had really cool lore of their own. i remember i tried to keep up with everything, but things got too serious to the point where a bunch of CCs even started feeling like they cant even break certain BLOCKS because "its apart of history/its important to someone elses lore." i feel like thats why a "main storyline" format developed. everyone got overwhelmed and everything was considered super important, that viewers didnt really have the freedom to choose who to watch anymore because bigger streamers were stealing alot of the spotlight. and thats bound to happen! but my biggest issue is the way how literally everyone was treated about everything.

i recall several times where someone destroyed/lost something considered valuable and would get harassed on twitter. it was ridiculous man.

the popularity of dsmp was absolutely mental looking back. it was far from perfect that server was. but like, again, my biggest issue was how it was handled behind the scenes and how CCs were treated by everyone.

despite everything, i still hold this server close to my heart. i still really love it, but i can still say what went wrong with it yknow?

it had its golden moments, and when it did, it was fuckin awesome. i did really miss the casual laid back silly streams back then, like the ones quackity did. thats something else i wish was brought back.

anything involving emerald duo (technoblade and philza) and the syndicate were the BEST. they do no wrong ever 100% theyre correct in everything they do YEP. /j

i really, really wish we got to see the cyberknife story play out. thats something that ill miss yknow? for obvious reasons. but so many ridiculously talented artists and writers spawned from that fandom! i feel like the stories and lore were all left as an open book. and so many still continue technos character, i couldnt be any more happier :]

Scrapped lore bits from the Dream SMP I'm still mad we never got:

-Whatever lore Nihachu had planned for the day Doomsday happened

-The Egg finale scheduled for immediately after the Red Banquet

-Jschlatt's Las Nevadas resurrection (heavily implied by Quackity trying to get the Revival Book after gambling with Glatt and cc!Schlatt saying he'd be coming back to the SMP)

-Any further development of Puffychu

-Ranboo getting resurrected (cc!Ran saying he was meant to be revived two weeks after the prison break)

-Hitting on 16 in livestream format. Like I know we still got the lore but cc!Wilbur simply could not fit what the format brings into written form. The long periods of characters just talking to each other, body language, random impromptu moments, etc.

-The Manhunt Arc (slight speculation but the streams where Tommy reinforced Tubbo's old house and convinced Eryn, Sam Nook, and Phil to help him track and kill Dream after the prison break felt like it was setting up something)

-Cyberknife lore (cc!Techno planned on having his character leave and acting as an antagonist for the syndicate)

-Ranboo's ARG (never properly finished)

-Ranboo and Slime in the multiverse (I have no context but I swear cc!Ranboo said something about this and if I had to guess tftsmp!Ran and O!Ranboo could've had something to do with it)

-whatever Connor had going on (I know his SMPLive stuff I'm referring to him knowing Karl could time travel)

-Tubbo's ending of growing old and raising Michael (planned but cut for the nuclear ending)

-Tommy's soft ending which would apparently resemble Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad. (this is secondhand information but I've seen people talk about it. I assume this to mean he would escape the SMP and we wouldn't see what happened to him. Cut for the nuclear ending)

-Captain Puffy being the main antagonist of Season 2 (as seen by her being the vessel for the fully powered Egg in the finale and having a skin ready for season 2)
