what was the point of lila thinking home was a feeling she didn't deserve and could never earn until she found diego. what was the point of them finding deep, meaningful love in each other. what was the point of lila opening her heart and confessing that all she really wanted was a family with him.
what was the point of developing diego and lila over two seasons, creating such a beautiful, chaotic bond, just to destroy it for no reason.
#the umbrella academy#diego x lila#lila pitts#diego hargreeves#what was the point!!!!!!#isn't it great when there's no character resolution and everyone just gets erased from existence#instead of giving us emotional closure they just added more pain and trauma and called it a day#what was it all for exactly. to give the handler a peaceful happy life of all people#don't even get me started on the bracelet or that awful pointless love triangle#steve blackman is gross and so is the way he talks about lila like she's not even a character in her own right but just an afterthought#someone who was there to pair with five while diminishing all that she is#five needed a love story so they just shoved lila into that role as if she were some random accessory to five's story#rather than her own character with thoughts and feelings#a woman's entire character arc is ruined just to give a guy a love interest#i feel sick#i've already mentioned some of this on twitter but whatever#as you can probably guess i'm not going to gif this so-called new season#lila deserved better. diego deserved better. we deserved better

Once your vessel has been shattered.... this is what remains?
I have been trying to draw this scene since the day I saw this episode. And ever time I tried, it never felt right, it never flowed, it never did what I wanted it to do. I think this is my 4th or 5th attempt.
I think I finally figured it out.
Timelapse below the cut.

okayyyyy fine (I say to the maybe 3 people interested) I'll talk about Dr. Tanaka, and the show's (Bones 2005) response to them
[disclaimer: my perspective is someone late 20s, white, & nonbinary, as well as biased to see the good in this show. I may not have the same perspective on these examples as someone else]
[also I wrote this for fun! so it's not like an airtight argument or anything]
so.. I wasn't surprised by the team's reaction to a person who doesn't conform to gendered standards (obsession with figuring out if they were really a man or a woman, culminating in a hug just to feel their chest), for 2 main reasons:
I. Bones is a show about awkward (usually contextually privileged) people with good hearts, and it expresses this core sentiment over and over again using microaggressions:
The little person from the State Department (Alex Radziwill) is called a midget, and Bones ignorantly accosts him about how he approaches his job. It's done in the context of Booth and Bones reacting weirdly to him. By her saying ignorant things that force Booth to confront his own weirdness, they eventually reach an equilibrium with Radziwill, where they treat him like a normal contentious coworker. It's really uncomfortable, and Radziwill has to sit through them getting over themselves.
The He in The She. Do I even have to mention more than the episode title? It takes forever for the cast to wrap their heads around Pastor Patricia Stephenson, a woman whose bones suggest a male, but whose anatomy suggests a female!! Oh no! Booth struggles with using her correct pronouns, and many characters flip flops between, often settling on the masculine pronouns. And yet, the show itself gives credence to how Patricia lived the last parts of her life. It finds the beauty and honesty in how she lived, and we get to see that honored. But not necessarily through the characters, especially the main squint squad.
Arastoo Vaziri. This poor man is just a Muslim who works in the lab. Bones expresses disdain for him being visibly religious. Hodgins straight up discriminates against him, tells him to his face that he doesn't like Vaziri because he's Muslim. Vaziri has to actively attempt to bond with Hodgins to overcome this bias. Cam barely steps in here, and ultimately Vaziri has to suffer the ignorance of those around him. He has to push back about his people being associated with bombs, because white people are terrorists too! He brings out a list!
And these are just main plot points. There are definitely other examples of how these characters awkwardly microaggress their peers and civilians.
II. The interpersonal logic of Bones is predicated on gendered relationships
I cannot count the amount of times a character on Bones said "It's a woman thing," or "It's a guy thing," or "Alpha-male." The more socially adept a character is (Booth, Angela, Cam, Hodgins), the more they lean on these constructs for explaining personal relationships and the more they use gendered constructs for what's permissible in their relationships. Brennan, Zach, and other squints are often actively taught what's okay to do based on gendered rules. "She's a woman," Angela says to Zach, who doesn't understand why a girl isn't calling him back. "It's a guy thing," Angela says to Brennan, confused about something Booth is doing. "It's a guy-hug," Booth says, manipulating Bones into accepting comfort by explaining a gendered rule that he's making up.
In an environment so saturated with these rules, the characters have no idea what to do with the interpersonal reactions they have to Dr. Tanaka (as Clark has established, the characters are constantly using their interpersonal lens at work). So, this mystery makes Dr. Tanaka into a site of intrigue. I'd say both Hodgins and Angela interpret this intrigue as attraction, based both on their desire for/interpretation of Dr. Tanaka as a woman or a man, respectively. The surprise/rethinking that occurs after feeling up Dr. Tanaka's chest is consistent with this mystery/intrigue/psychosexual anxiety of not knowing a gender. (To digress a bit, it's reactions in this vein that created the Trans Panic Defense for murdering trans people).
I'm also unsurprised at Sweets. From his defense of Dr. Tanaka presenting as they want to him standing alongside the hug onlookers out of curiosity, he's the part of the show that's looking forward. He's the planted seed for this episode: that people who don't want to share their gender, it's not your business, even if it's hard to resist the part of you that thinks that.
And honestly, I think that's kind of the core to it.
Bones is a show about privileged professional folks who are often ignorant, but it attempts to plant seeds in their moderate liberal audience about cultures and subcultures. It planted the seed that Radziwill (a little person) was just a coworker using his own advantages, and it's important to treat him like you would another coworker. It planted the seed that Patricia (a trans woman) was right to transition and live her fullest life. It planted the seed that Arastoo (a Muslim) is just a coworker, one who has his own religious life, and Hodgins was the one acting irrationally.
Finally, it planted the seed that Dr. Tanaka is just living their life, and the awkward must-know-their-gender drive didn't really mean anything in the end, except for the team feeling weird about it.
#my conjecture is that it takes you on this emotional microaggression journey with the characters#so you don't act like an ass when you encounter someone like x#but yeah#I'm not judging it too harshly#this episode aired years before gay marriage was legalized in the us#so I'm still proud of the attempt#and I'm thinking this attempt was meant for teaching#even if it doesn't hit the mark as much as it does with other similar arcs#bones tv#musings#I wouldn't even be surprised by people saying it missed the mark on all these examples#or by people saying this strategy isn't enough#but it's a big part of the show imo#i have a friend who doesn't accept this as good enough and tbh? fair enough

recently i've been thinking about rowan omondi in terms of the "supportive black best friend" trope. i've had this idea for a while that it would be interesting to see a story that deals specifically with the psychological effects of being the designated "support friend", especially in cases where that character addressing/expressing their own emotions and advocating for themself would be stigmatised because of their race... and obviously, rowan fits into this neatly, actively repressing and refusing to talk about his feelings because he isn't usually given this sort of support by his friends, it's usually him who's supporting them. and i guess on a metatextual level, once he begins to address his own emotional repression and step down from that support role, you could view it as him becoming cognisant of his own role as the "supportive black best friend".
#iwbft#rowan omondi#this post is absolutely cracked because it's my personal theory/lens/interpretation/story idea that i have literally never shared before#and then applied (as if it's a well-established interpretation/lens) to someone who is. not the main character of his respective work#and listen. we all love rowan. i just think ive thought about him way more than most people#i'm thoroughly uncertain of whether i've explained myself properly here. idk how much the conjecture of rowan's arc post-iwbft#is common sense to other people. and stuff like that#BUT! i hope you enjoy this post nonetheless#i would also like to say this isn't a criticism of IWBFT. i dont think alice was at all ignorant of the role she was writing rowan into#by making him an overly-supportive friend who also happens to be black#(in fact i think the specific way rowan's emotional repression displays itself is a deliberate subversion of what would otherwise be#a very archetypical role for a black character)#yea. im just positing a lens im not levying criticism at IWBFT or alice#osemanverse#thunder rambles#(these thoughts actually first came about when corinna brown was first talking abt tara's arc in s3. and then i thought about it again#when i watched timestalker and jacob anderson's character basically just gives up being the support character at the end LMFAO)

Eärien and Valandil parallels Rings of Power Season 1
#this post is a placeholder for a meta i'm writing which compares their character arcs and argues they have much more in common than not#i am SO OVER people acting like Eärien is a bad person for not having faith in current leadership#and also annoyed by them treating valandil as 'the good one' in his response to the loss in the southlands#they are equally motivated by grief and loss#but their experiences differ quite a bit#earien has lost every single member of her family#they have either died or left her (in case of elendil this is long standing emotional neglect)#her worst fears came true and still her father is not there for her or listening to her#so naturally she turns elsewhere as she seeks justice#and valandil isn't making 'right' choices so much as he's stood by leaders who share his specific trauma and have supported him personally#anyway i love them both and i refuse to let them be pitted against each other#rings of power#earien#valandil#elendil critical#i love him but he's objectively not a great father to Eärien in the context of the show#i actually do have more to say...later#ANYWAY#rop op#my edits

literally every other WOT viewer in the world:
#they've been saying this ever since the finale aired and it drives me CRAZY#have your personal opinions all you want but to say that 2x08 was objectively a weak episode is simply not correct#cinematography acting vfx choreography music EVERYTHING was at the absolute top of its game#and despite being an Exciting Battle Episode it was completely anchored in character moments & emotional resonance which is no easy feat#so much going on yet there was time for every major character to get a huge developmental/emotional beat#(yes even those like nynaeve whose beat was a loss rather than a victory)#every season arc was either wrapped up in an immensely satisfying way or was set up for a deeper examination next season#and 90% of the general audience absolutely loved it#and yet reddit acts like it's an Accepted Fact that it was poor quality#just bc the book-to-show changes in that episode weren't to THEIR PERSONAL taste#touch grass#wot#seeing as season finales will always have the biggest moments it's kinda inevitable that hardcore book fans#will always be the most sensitive to any changes made in those particular episodes#not to mention that the changes made in eps 1-7 will snowball and culminate in the finale#so i feel like finales are always gonna be judged the most harshly by readers#like if dumai's wells isn't an exact 1:1 recreation of the book version#readers are 1000000% going to flip their shit no matter how objectively good the show's version actually is#wot book spoilers#for the replies

One of the adaptational changes I liked most in the anime version of Swordsmith Village's finale was showing Tanjiro basically having a panic attack when trying to shield Nezuko from the sun, while also being aware that Hantengu is still rampaging. The way they showcase this is hyperventilation.
In a series where control of breath is equal to control of the situation at hand, showing Tanjiro, a master of Total Concentration Constant hyperventilating is a cue. He has cracked, he has lost control of the situation, and this is what has broken him.

potentially controversial personal opinion I think arcane s2 would be getting a lot more flack if it wasn't for all the shipping fodder and shiny objects packed in there. convinced you could spoon-feed toddler upchuck to half of the population as long as you go Brrrr here comes the yaoi airplane
#Like season 2 is just Not good#after the hype died down I realized this#character assassination Concepts that desperately needed fleshing out Important developments being glossed over etc#it's a gorgeous show and the writing isn't egregious especially compared to a lot of what's out there but comparing it to season 1#is like putting a bichon frise next to a Timber wolf writing-wise#nothing in s2 felt as visceral as it did in s1#I don't feel any desire to rewatch it at all meanwhile you could ask me at any point if I wanted to watch s1 again and I'd be like Fuck yes#even if I'd just seen it again 5 days before#if you don't give a fuck about shipping s2 feels like a drag at a lot of points#nothing will make me fume more than the fact Vi's lesbian crash-out pitfighting emo phase was contained to a single music video#I WANTED TO SEE THAT SHIT! show us her at her lowest!! make us stew in it and feel it with her!!#don't just give us 2 minutes of her kicking ass with occasional emo shit in between#Viktor and Jayce have an interesting story though I will say that. The arcane shit was really cool#but that's it. it was cool. I felt nothing. the height of my emotional experience was just That's cool.#meanwhile in 2021 I was on the verge of bawling my eyes out at multiple points getting goosebumps#feeling genuine dread/having my heart race#it was exhilarating#Rant over. no hate if you like s2 of jayvik I'm very aware that this is just my experience and that a lot of people adore s2#and I already didn't really care about Viktor or Jayce in season 1. I was more interested in the undercity n stuff#And war arcs are not my favorite they've been done So many times. so there's that too

Moment they confirmed that Mystique and Destiny had a baby together, giving birth to Kurt. There have been a strange subset of people who go, "what about Azael??" the demon guy, you want kurts dad to be a niche devil character? instead of the far more compelling parentage that stems from Mystique and Destiny? you gotta be kidding me.
#kurt wagner#nightcrawler#it's just weird to me because like isn't the whole point of Nightcrawler is that he may look like a devil but he's actually just a mutant#the whole crux if his character? his emotional arc? by making his dad literally satan then it just confirms peoples hatered for him#people would have a reason to hate poor kurt for lookin like the devil if his dads the devil!!

My most unpopular Stony opinion is that I generally loved CACW and think it's absolutely necessary for Steve and Tony's relationship and individual character development that it happened the way it did.
#me my mine#obviously excluding the things I didn't like about it#but i've always been open that i hated the audience reaction rather than the movie itself#stony#stevetony#cacw wasn't a miscommunication btw it was more of an ideological/emotional conflict#i strongly believe that both tony and steve understood each other but staunchly disagreed for various reasons#the most compelling reason (to me) being the lining of their character arcs till then#cacw#also i lied this probably isn't my MOST unpopular stony opinion

Okay but the reveal that not only were Ravonna and Mobius BOTH once hunters, but that they were partners????? Adds so so much depth to their relationship makes so much sense why a judge and an analyst would be so close. And that Mobius couldn't kill the child that would grow up to kill thousands so Ravonna made the hard call and did it in his place??? God that adds so much weight to earlier in the season where Ravonna spoke about how she's always made the tough choices so Mobius didn't have to😭
Truly EONS of friendship, being partners trusting each other having each other's backs cleaning up each others messes. A bond that lasted hundreds of years later even after they were professionally separated and Ravonna was promoted to judge and Mobius transferred to analysis. I just. NO FUCKING WONDER Ravonna felt so gd betrayed when Mobius got a new bestie and chose him over her. And no wonder even after Ravonna literally pruned Mobius in S1 he still wanted to try and work things out and mend bridges cause they've been through tough shit together before and after all this time they're basically each other's FAMILY and-
#God these two get me so emotional#On the whole I'm fine with Loki ending with s2 cause that was one HELL of a finale holy fucking shit#But I'll be really fucking sad if we never get to see these two reconcile and be besties again#Like Ravonna's story is clearly not fucking over she could easily appear in future movies#In fact I think it's more likely than not that she does especially with her teased connection to Kang#And Mobius's story isn't over either yet#So it wouldn't be a stretch to bring them both over to over MCU projects and do a slow-burn besties to enemies to besties again type arc#(With Mobius also reuniting with his husband cause they're literal soulmates)#Mine#loki spoilers#loki series#loki season 2#loki 2x06#ravonna renslayer#mobius m mobius#Mobius x Ravonna#loki disney+#Loki

I'm starting Mission to Zyxx Season 5 now, and I have feelings about that.
First, it generally scares me when people hype anything up at all because there is no guarantee that anyone values the exact same thing I do to the same degree. Even if I trust the creators of a thing to value something and try to do right by it, that doesn't always necessarily mean it will be successful, especially if that involves doing something wildly different than what made it good in the first place (I have been burned this way before). I guess I'm just hoping they continue the format of goofy improv shenanigans for the majority of it with something more planned and emotional in the finale if they want, like they've been doing all along. I'd think they would, and I've heard nothing bad about the ending, but I guess it still makes me nervous because I'm so close to the end and I want it so badly to stick the landing. I'm setting my expectations on the floor so I can be surprised instead of disappointed, but honestly, I don't need it to be better, I just need it to be on par with the rest.
Second, and more briefly, I'm happy it's (hopefully) ending before it has a chance to decline. I am so on board with that philosophy. But on the other hand, finishing a thing that I really, really like and knowing there's not another one out there gives me a special kind of heartache. Like, I know there will be other good media, and stuff that's good and unique in other ways, but I know for a fact that there are no other podcasts out there that have the same mix of a balance of off-the-wall improv and structured narrative, quality comedy, fantastical sci-fi setting and loveable characters, and high quality production. There are other things out there with many of those qualities, but nothing that checks every one of those boxes. It's a lightning-in-a-bottle thing that very much feels like the right people had to be in the right place at the right time to do it. Attempts to do it again would feel hollow because it had to be born out of necessity and passion and the talents of the people involved, so if you switch out the people it loses the reasons it's great, and if the same people tried to do it again it'd feel tired. That makes me so, so grateful it exists, but also so, so sad that it doesn't, and I'm 80% of the way done. When it's over, it's over.
Anyway. Now that that's all out there, I'm just gonna finish listening and have fun. Wish me luck.
#pickle pontificates#mission to zyxx#if you freaking flip on episode 1 after reading this and are like. wow. they're talking a lot about butts and ejecting people into space.#what is pickle on about#well. sue me i guess. idk#I have a lot of feelings about this as a general topic so this is moreso just the most recent thing that's touched on it for me#okay so time for essay 2 in the tags#1. I don't really talk about TAZ on here but it's something I carry with me whenever I think about this kind of thing#I think that in the same vein as MTZ it started off very goofy and directionless and then gave me more emotions than I thought it would#and it's not perfect but balance was a cultural landmark in a lot of ways#i enjoyed amnesty but it didn't have the same spark. what drew me to balance was all the goofy improvisation#and the fact that it was never serious until it was#amnesty (although i loved the setting/concept and enjoyed the characters) crossed the line into taking things more seriously#and while that's not a bad thing in and of itself the thing i enjoy about the mcelroys is when they're goofing around#that's what they're good at and it's why i like them#subsequent arcs suffered the same thing to varying degrees#i slogged through most of graduation for some reason and although ethersea was better i didn't finish it#taz dracula was the first time i've felt that same kind of fun while listening since balance#and I really think it was because they were just getting silly with it. sure yeah elizabeth the sports druid. lady godwin turns into a hors#whatever!#their dad gets to follow through on his ideas and do whatever crazy but kinda logical thing he comes up with#but i guess the point is that to me taz feels very lightning in a bottle. balance is what it's capable of being but is not the default#all the other right ingredients had to be in the soup#2. noragami. ohh noragami.#you wormed your way deep into my heart and then flopped out of it like a messy slimy dead fish#and i can't even be upset about it because the creators sounded so tired and unhappy with the way it ended#but there was so much potential. so many themes that DID hit hard throughout the story and could've knocked a man out cold#had they come back at the end#and they could have right up until so very close!!! it wasn't unsalvageable#in fact it still isn't. you'd hardly have to revise anything. you'd just have to write a different ending
