While everyone knew that working the 9-12 weekday shift at the campus bookstore was the worst job you could possibly get, you didn’t feel quite as exhilarated to have been laid off as you should have.

As the one who had suffered at the hand of old Mrs. Lee for almost the entire duration of your time on campus, you knew the torture better than most. So it was an understatement to say that you were exhilarated to be free of ironing book pages out and restocking the shelves at Mrs. Lee’s whims, that you were practically beaming when you got the email.

But on the other hand, it wasn’t like you had much money to spare, or like you had the ability to find another job in the crowded university. When you felt your wallet in your back pocket, completely empty save for a couple crinkled receipts, the grin faded from your face; after all, it would be even harder to survive without the aid of your measly salary.

So as you pinched together a couple quarters to buy yourself a consolatory iced chocolate, you found that being let go from the shittiest job in the world didn’t feel as triumphant as you had expected. Not when you were, once again, scouring the papers stabled to the lightposts around the campus for anything that offered a quick paycheck.

Well, almost anything.

“I will not.”

“Why?” Lisa was close to whining, though the pout that she directed fully at you did her no favors. “You said you needed to get paid.”

You sighed, “I said i needed to get paid, not launched in the air like a damn cannonball.”

Lisa scowled and tapped her fingers on her face, her hands still cupping her chin as she attempted to convince you. “Come on, the dance team’s willing to pay. It costs less to pay you than to get a dummy, so--”

“That’s not helping to convince me,” you warned. As desperate as you were, and as much as you liked Lisa and her fellow dancers, you definitely didn’t trust them not to launch you in the air and break your neck. “Are you sure that you don’t know about any other job offers? Anything that won’t murder me?”

She considered it, chewing on her bottom lip. You could feel other students eyeing where you sat, one of the only seats in the incredibly tiny boba shop, but you refused to budge until Lisa gave you an answer. “Oh! There is one I can think of, actually. You know the bio lab?”

“Yeah.” You watched her suspiciously, arms crossed. “I’ve been there a couple times. Why?”

“Well, it isn’t a normal bio lab,” Lisa mumbled, leaning in as if what she was about to tell you was the greatest secret in the world. “A lot of them are witches, you know.”

It wasn’t like you didn’t believe in witches, or the supernatural-- both had been proven to be true eons ago, and almost half of the students attending your university weren’t completely human. But you were still a little skeptical that the pretty and equally brilliant girls who ran the campus’s bio lab were... “Witches? Are you sure?”

“Why would I be lying?” Lisa rolled her eyes. “I’m friends with a couple of them, and I know that they’re doing an... experiment of sorts, and they need--”

“Lab rats,” you finished for the dancer. In all rationality, being a lab rat for a couple of young witches with access to a high-tech lab was probably worse than getting launched up in the air by a dance team, but when Lisa slid a flyer over and your eyes widened at the offered money, you instantly stood. “Take me.”

Lisa pouted but stood anyway, taking the flyer back to squint at the tiny scribbled building number. “I can’t believe you trust Mina more than you trust me.”

“Mina? Is that the name of the ‘witch’ I’m selling myself to?” you asked, slightly sarcastic but also slightly curious. At the dancer’s nod, you exhaled lightly and shoved your seat in just to watch the next people scramble for it, and hummed on your way out, “Then let’s meet this Mina.”

Maybe it had something to do with the fact that your entire school was close to dilapidated, but something about the bio lab was almost creepy as you approached it. Lisa had long since set off for the dance room (something about Seulgi breaking Ten’s ankle, she claimed), so you hesitated in front of the cloudy glass door alone. But the thought of the $600 dollars scrawled onto the flyer scrunched in your fist prompted you to push the doors open and step into the lab.

There was already a decent amount of people buzzing around inside; you recognized quite a few of them and nearly laughed at the amount of students willing to possibly be poisoned. But you took the nearest empty seat as someone appeared at the front of the room.

“Wow, this is a great turnout.”

The crowd chuckled lightly, and your eyes nearly bugged out at the sight of the girl standing at the front with papers in her hands. Honestly, she was the kind of girl that you imagined people wrote love songs about-- absolutely perfect without having to really do anything, elegant and soft in a way that still stood out. She smiled slightly and waved, eyes darting around the room. “Hi. I’m Mina, I’m part of the coven that sent out the flyers.”

You joined in the chorus of greetings, but your eyes stayed fixed on Mina at the front of the room. You could see several other girls lurking around in the shadows, probably the other members, though they kept beckoning Mina to speak on her own. “Um, I’ll just... explain the project to you,” she chuckled nervously, darting over to the computer.

Once a slide was displayed on the wall, she rushed back to the front and explained, “Being a potions-focused coven and also biology majors, we wanted to conduct an experiment. A love potion, or an aphrodisiac in scientific terms.”

Murmurs arose around you, and even your eyebrows scrunched together; as far as you knew, aphrodisiacs weren’t real, and if they were, they were probably illegal. In response, Mina raised her hands and her voice slightly to call out, “Hey, hey. It’s an experiment. We were originally planning to accept all of you, but... I think it’ll be hard to conduct an experiment with 50 people, so please fill out the form we pass out.”

And like that, Mina joined the rest of her friends in passing out the clipboards. You didn’t watch them, only scanned the lab for any signs that you were about to die, so when you were tapped on the shoulder, you almost fell off your stool. It was Mina herself, a slight pink tinting her pale skin as she held out one of the forms to you. “Uh. Thanks.” You accepted it with a bow of your head, staring down at the paper. It looked legitimate, with areas for your age, your height--

“What’s your name?”

In your haste to read over the paper, you hadn’t noticed that Mina hadn’t left. When you looked back up, you could feel heat burning at the tops of your ears, and you answered, “Y/N. Y/N Y/L/N, though you’ll read it on my application.”

“Oh. Of course. Thanks for coming, Y/N,” Mina mumbled, bowing before moving on to someone else. You noted that she didn’t ask for the name of anyone else, but you passed it off and turned back to the form. Since when did becoming a coven’s lab rat require your blood type, anyway?

After nearly a week, you had almost given up on being accepted into the experiment. But just 5 days after turning your form in, you got the text.

Unknown number [4:57]  Is this Y/N Y/L/N? My name is Mina, we met at the bio lab last week. I’m texting to tell you that you got accepted into the program; we’re meeting at the lab again at 9:00 tonight to discuss the experiment further.

You [5:00]   yeah, it’s me. i’ll be there.

It wasn’t like what you wore to the meeting mattered; all you were doing was being briefed on exactly what was about to happen to you. But all through your classes of the day, through your futile studying, you couldn’t keep your mind off the experiment that you had somehow been accepted into, and whether it was a good idea to go at all.

Suffice to say, you went.

“Y/N?” the girl at the entrance of the lab asked. You recognized her from the week before-- dark hair, bunny-toothed smile. “You are Y/N, right?”

“Yeah,” you answered, shifting your weight from one foot to the other. “Why?”

“Oh, nothing,” she smiled. “We’re just taking roll, making sure everyone’s here. Take a seat inside, if you will.”

You obliged, nodding awkwardly before brushing past her. To your relief, the lab was nowhere as packed as it had been the week before, 7 people including yourself seated on the stools as the girls fiddled with test tubes in the back. One pair of eyes in particular lingered on you, before Mina was pulled back to talk, but your cheeks warmed nonetheless.

“Okay, everyone!” someone else announced, clapping her hands together. “My name’s Jihyo, I’m the head of the coven. This is Nayeon” -- the bunny-toothed girl from earlier waved-- “and Mina. We’ll be explaining the experiment to you today.”

She pulled the projector down and Nayeon stepped up, flashing a grin at all of you. “Basically, we made an aphrodisiac. And to test it, we’ll have all of you do the exact same things with the exact same person-- Mina.”

Mina stepped forward this time, and you couldn’t help smiling at the shy smile that tugged at her lips. “To keep conditions equal, you’ll all be going on the exact same 2 dates with me,” she explained. “I’ll take notes on how you act around me, and we’ll test how you feel about me at the very end. Any questions?”

The room was basically silent and honestly, you couldn’t see a downside to it either. Take a potion once and go on dates with a pretty girl, then get observed like a hamster on its wheel so you could get paid? A million times better than your old job. “Great,” Jihyo nodded. “Then, we’ll get started. If Y/N could be the first one? You’ll just go into a room with Mina to get interviewed and take your first dose.”

“Don’t die,” someone called out as you passed, and you flashed a glare despite not knowing who it was. Nayeon giggled as she opened the door for you and closed it behind you, leaving you in what you assumed to be a supply closet. Romantic.

“Hi,” Mina greeted softly, already seated across the table. “I’ll just ask you a series of questions, if that’s okay.”

“Go for it.”

“Rate how attracted you are to me on a scale from 1 to 10.”

Your jaw dropped immediately; for the first question, it was awfully invasive, especially when Mina voiced it with such a straight face. But you straightened your spine and answered stiffly, “9.” 

It should’ve been 10, but you weren’t trying to look like a literal creep; Mina only hummed and marked a circle on her form, moving on to ask, “Are you considering dating anyone else at the moment?”

“No.”

And in that manner, the questions passed decently quickly, with Mina asking them as flatly as possible and you answering them with the exact same tone. As soon as she set the clipboard aside, though, she returned to her original sweet state. “I’ll just have you swallow this now, if that’s okay.”

The test tube was cold to the touch when you uncapped it, and the liquid inside was suspiciously clear. But you barely gave it a passing glance before downing it like a shot, asking with narrowed eyes, “Is it supposed to taste like nothing?”

“Well, we figured that not everyone would like to taste tequila once a week with none of the good effects,” Mina chuckled and placed the empty test tube in its place.

“How fast will I see results?” you questioned as you stood. “Like, am I gonna wake up in a cold sweat tonight because I can’t handle how much I suddenly love you?”

The girl shook her head, though it was a bit hesitant. “I don’t believe so. It should only become more prominent once you see me more often. Which reminds me, I’ll text you about our first date as soon as I can. Thank you for participating, Y/N.”

You snatched your jacket up and stumbled your way out of the room as quickly as you could, hoping no one was looking as you closed the door behind you with a quivering pulse.

Despite the witch’s words, you were sure that the potion was already taking effect. Why else would your heart start to throb terribly as you looked at her smile? 

mina [8:16]  Hello Y/N! I was wondering if you had class today?

Mouth full of cheap cup ramen noodles, you stared at your phone screen. If Mina was asking you about your schedule, she had to have something planned (for the experiment, of course. You weren’t delusional). And you weren’t sure if you were mentally ready to see her shy smile again.

But when the thought of the $600 dollar check popped into your head, you reached for your phone and started to type again. 

You [8:19]  hey, mina. i don’t have class, actually, is this something about the experiment?

mina [8:20]  Yes! If possible, please meet me at the front of the school, we���ll be visiting the food trucks at the beach. I’ll pay!

Your stomach growled at the thought of the renowned food trucks at the beach by your university, and you typed out a hasty agreement before stuffing your phone into your bag and setting off for your apartment. There was no way you were enjoying such an opportunity for good food (and perfect company) in a slightly ramen-stained hoodie.

Thankfully, Mina didn’t seem to mind you being late when you approached her. “Hi, Y/N,” she smiled and hitched her bag higher up her shoulder. “I’m glad to see you.”

“Hi,” you breathed. Well, at least you tried to-- you could barely remember how to function when faced with Mina in a slightly cropped red top, her hair tied up in a little ponytail. But you followed her down the street well enough, towards where you vaguely remembered a fleet of various food trucks to be. “So, have you already conducted this part of the experiment with everyone else?”

Mina shook her head and answered, “No, you’re the first. You took the dose first, so you’ll be a bit like the guinea pig within guinea pigs.”

You snickered at that, nearly tripping over one of the raised cracks in the ground. Sure, the way down the hill to the beach wasn’t the safest one ever, but at least it was convenient for conducting test dates. “The lab rat. You know, this doesn’t seem remotely like a scientific experiment.”

“What do you mean?” the other girl asked, eyes on yours.

Coughing, you looked away from her gaze, though you could feel her still staring at the back of your head. “I mean... it’s not exactly normal for 7 people to drink a potion that tastes like nothing, then go on dates with a pretty girl and treat that as testing.”

“You think I’m pretty?”

“That’s what you got from my whole spiel?” you sighed in disbelief, turning to look at Mina. She laughed, gums showing slightly and her eyes twinkling, and you were forced to turn to the front yet again. “Whatever. Which trucks are we raiding first?”

And as it turned out, Mina was... generous. You were tempted to ask how she was going to keep herself from going broke if she bought that much food for everyone, but watching her bring yet another load of snacks over to where you sat on the wall, you weren’t sure if she cared too much. “Hey. Are you gonna pay for every date?”

“Hm?” She looked up from her Americano and considered the question. “Well, yes? I mean, we planned for the second date next week to be the fair, and I wouldn’t want any college student to have to pay for those overpriced tickets.”

“Aren’t you a college student?”

Mina hummed lightly and dug into her ice cream, sucking thoughtfully on the spoon. “Well, my parents are... well off? I’d like to put it that way, at least. And I think that when I can, I’ll use that to make others happy. Or to further our coven’s experiments.”

“Rich family,” you observed. “Cool.” To be honest, you didn’t really care about how much money anyone’s family made, but it was nice to have all that food paid for. After all, the sheer amount of things Mina bought could’ve covered several months worth of the finest ramen that the restaurants around campus could’ve offered. “Then why’d you end up going to college here with us normal people?”

She raised an eyebrow jokingly and gathered her knees to her chest. “Am I not a normal person anymore?” When you opened your mouth, slightly sheepishly, she giggled and waved a hand, answering, “I ended up choosing this college because my best friends came here. We’re all Japanese, and Sana wanted to come to Korea, so Momo and I just came along for the ride.”

“Ah.” You turned to watch the sky, the sun melting golden into the surface of the waves just a couple dozen feet away. You understood why it was called golden hour as you watched bright yellow rays flicker in Mina’s eyes and glow in her hair, and you had to resist the urge to pull out a camera and capture the feeling of a first date, as much of an experiment as it was. “Makes sense. Then-- how’d you find your coven? I don’t remember a Momo or a Sana.”

“Our coven is a bit... unconventional,” Mina nodded. “It’s just me, Nayeon, and Jihyo. You know that most covens form as children, and they train together, but we only met in college. See, none of us had our own coven, so it was natural that we came together. Momo and Sana aren’t witches, or we should’ve been together.”

You nodded in silence, prompting her to go on. And she did, a soft smile pressing her lips against her teeth as she thought about the girls eh seemed to consider her friends, or her family. “And, well, none of the three of us have had great luck finding someone to love. Or, to love us,” Mina added as an afterthought. “A love potion was just the first thing we fixated on.”

“Finding someone to love you?” you repeated, hand pressed up against your cheek. “I don’t mean that I don’t believe you, but it’s kind of hard to imagine that it’s difficult to find someone to love you. You’re pretty great, Mina.”

She laughed, “I’m glad you think so. But there’s a reason why we chose me as the one to test the potion with.”

“Oh yeah? And what’s that?”

Mina looked you right in the eyes, a kind of softness swirling in the brown of her own eyes, and responded equally quietly, “We chose me because we thought I was the hardest to fall in love with.”

“Bullshit,” you responded instantly, heat rising to your ears immediately after. But thankfully, the Japanese girl only looked endeared, and you continued, “I mean, I don’t know if this is just the potion talking, but you’re awesome. I... I think I’d like you even if I wasn’t part of this damn experiment.”

She blushed, the hue of her cheeks matching the pink clouds in the sky. “Well, I think you’re exaggerating on that. But it’s not them, I just volunteered myself. I think people just misunderstand me, you know? It’s hard to find the right person for you when you don’t let people see you. And-- I don’t even know why I’m telling you this. On a first date, too.”

“Hey.” When she looked away from you, you reached over to squeeze her hand. Mina didn’t look back up to you, but you knew she was listening from the way she chewed at her bottom lip. “It’s okay. I know what you’re saying. And I can’t say I know you yet, but I can say I wouldn’t mind knowing you. I’d like it, even.”

Mina laughed, barely loud enough for you to hear, and squeezed your hand. “Thank you, Y/N. I think we should finish our food before it gets cold.”

“Oh, yeah.” You let go to reach for one of the many desserts displayed in front of you, barely fazed by the topic change. “Wouldn’t want your parents’ money to go to waste.”

“Please let that go,” she whined.

“Not a chance,” you winked in response, laughing at her pout. “Not. A. Chance.”

“Lili, I think I’m done for.”

“Like, literally?” Lisa asked mindlessly, receiving a light hit on the head in response. “Ow, what was that for?”

You whined, “This isn’t funny. I can feel myself falling, and there’s no cushion underneath me for me to fall onto.”

The dancer rolled her eyes and reached for her milk tea. “Okay, Miss Overdramatic. You know falling doesn’t work like that, no one’s kicking you off a cliff. Especially not Myoui Mina.”

“I’m not being kicked off, I’m sliding.” You made the motions with your hand, a despondent expression on your face as you scowled, “I’m slipping through a puddle of aphrodisiac, that’s what, and Mina poured it at my feet.”

“Okay, enough with the metaphors, I’m not an English major,” Lisa sighed. She tossed a chip at your face, as if being smeared with salt and oil would wake you up from your Mina-induced trance. “You’ve gone on one date with her and spoken to her approximately twice, I think you aren’t falling just yet.”

“Did you forget the part where I’m drugged to fall in love with her?” you deadpanned.

Lisa paused at that. “Okay, I did forget that. Then what? There’s an explanation as to why you’re feeling this way, and there’s a way to get rid of it. Once you get your paycheck, you just stay away from Mina, should be easy enough, since you never met her before this. And you wait for the potion to wear off.”

“Does it wear off?” you groaned into your hands.

“Did you never ask?” Lisa asked in disbelief. “Wow, Y/N, ever heard of fine print?”

You smacked her with your rolled-up notes yet again. “Shut up. But I have a date with her tomorrow, and I don’t know what to do. I’m feeling like this because of the potion, sure, but I’m still feeling like this! And Mina has 6 other people vying for her now, all under the same effect as me. And it feels... bad.”

“Eloquent,” your friend sighed. “Then I have the perfect solution for you. Don’t go on the second date.”

“I need the money,” you shook your head. “Gimme another one.”

Lisa considered it, sucked on her straw as she did, until she shook her head. “I got nothing. All I can tell you is to enjoy it while it lasts, then just... wait. And if it doesn’t wear off, Jisoo unnie’s studying law.”

As horrible as her suggestions were, you could admit that you felt the slightest bit more assured. In the worst case scenario, you could sue Mina for winning your heart, and in the best, the somehow blissful stabs at your heart would be alleviated soon enough. 

As it turned out, you got a chauffer to the fair. Not an actual one, of course-- it was just Jeongyeon, introduced as one of Mina’s friends who could actually drive. 

You really weren’t intending to talk to her at first. She was quiet, too, didn’t even turn on the radio once she started driving, but when something that Mina said crossed your mind, you had to speak up. “Hey, Jeongyeon. Can I ask you something? About Mina?”

“Shoot,” she answered simply, keeping her eyes on the road. 

“Do you think Mina’s hard to fall in love with?”

Jeongyeon glanced at you at that, her expression slightly quizzical. “What do you mean?”

“She said something yesterday,” you explained. “Mina said that they chose her for the experiment because they thought she was the hardest to fell in love with. She said-- something about being misunderstood?”

The older girl nodded in understanding at that and blew her hair out of her face. After a short pause, she sighed, “I think that’s more of what she thinks than the rest of us. Mina... she thinks she’s unapproachable, you know. She doesn’t open up easily, so I’m surprised she told you that at all. But... she’s been hurt several times, and a lot of people think she’s mean or something similarly stupid just because she’s quiet. That’s all.”

“Oh.” You wet your lips and looked forward to the road, where you could see the fair’s Ferris Wheel already in the distance. “I see.”

And that was that. The two of you fell back into silence, and as comfortable as it was, it only gave you more time to think about what you wanted to say.

Maybe you could see why they would choose the girl who thought of herself as unapproachable and quiet to be the test, but they also didn’t seem to think about the obvious warm color to Mina that she presented. She was quiet, sure, but she was sweet, kind... there was plenty to fall in love with, and even if there wasn’t magic coursing through your system, you thought that you could’ve fallen in love with her anyway.

After bidding goodbye to Jeongyeon at the entrance, you found Mina waiting for you by the fair entrance. “Y/N!” she called out, though her voice still wasn’t loud. You could’ve spotted her anywhere anyway, and made your way over. “You’re a bit early.”

“You were earlier,” you smiled. “So. Are we ready to go in?”

“Absolutely.” Mina linked her arm in yours slightly hesitantly and surprised the both of you, but you took it in stride and swung your arm slightly to bring a smile to her face. “I’ll get our tickets, you get in line.”

“I can pay for myself,” you protested, but she waved you off. “...Okay then.”

The fair was loud, a bit too loud to hear Mina’s voice if she talked normally, so you found yourself leaning in every time she spoke. You really didn’t mind it either, feeling her words tickle your ears-- maybe it was closer than you should’ve been comfortable with, but there was a certain adrenaline pumping in your blood that you weren’t really used to. So you continued on, fed cotton candy to her despite her blush, shared a soda, won a teddy bear for her. Nothing that should’ve made your heart beat as fast as it did.

Nonetheless, time ticked by all too quickly, whirling past in a gust of quiet laughter and honestly terrible jokes. The sun set yet again, the streaks of pink and purple across powder blue oddly similar to the first date you had gone on. Mina checked her watch and frowned, “I think we only have time for one more ride before Jeongyeon comes to pick us up. What do you think?”

You barely had to ponder it before you pointed at the tall, neon-lit Ferris wheel with a smile. “Classic date ride, of course.”

“Classic,” Mina laughed in agreement. She let you tug her towards it and stood in line with you with no complaint, digging a selfie stick out from her bag. “Should we take some pictures up there? It’d be a waste of a beautiful view if we don’t.”

You shrugged, “Of course. Might as well have some pictures to remember our last date by, right?”

Mina looked caught between saying something and staying silent, but she settled with a quiet, “Sure” before starting to set her phone up. Your hand in the crook of her elbow, you tugged her forward when it was necessary, keeping your eyes away from her red-tinted lips as much as you could.

Soon enough, wind was blowing your hair off your face and the cart of the ride was creaking slightly under your weight as someone started the wheel. “Whoa,” Mina laughed breathlessly and peered over the edge. “It’s really high up.”

“And we’re only starting,” you agreed, tugging her back by the wrist. “Don’t fall over, I don’t want to get off this ride with a murder charge on my hands.”

“Hm.” Mina reached over to set the selfie stick on the seat opposite the one the two of you shared, shoving you to get you to match her smile. “Come on, 1, 2, 3.”

With every click of her phone camera, you felt yourself coming closer to her, until you could feel the rise and fall of her chest beside you. You were almost at the top of the ride in barely a couple minutes, the soft sunlight almost blinding you. As you waited for the next camera click, you felt Mina’s hand creep up your arm, up, up, until her slightly cold fingers rested on your neck. 

And then she tilted your head, fit her nose right next to yours like it belonged there, and slotted your lips together. You couldn’t think, much less fight whatever force pushed you up against her. You kissed back as best as you could with your senses battling within you, until you realized that the camera shutter had gone off at least ten times.

Mina couldn’t meet your eyes when you did pull back, and she reached over to fiddle with the camera. “Was that a part of the experiment too?” you questioned, your voice raspy.

“Maybe,” she answered, and your heart sank. But she looked up with a smile, her eyes just as confused as you felt. “And maybe not.”

“Oh. Okay,” you said dumbly, then reached over for her hand. There was nothing left to say, anyway, nothing that the slight swell to your lips didn’t already say for you, nothing that wasn’t conveyed when you leaned over to kiss her again.

The idea of allowing a love potion to work its wonders on you was like allowing yourself to be tossed into a trap. But instead of a cold, rough, and terrible trap that you would actively try to escape, you found the trap to be warm, cozy, a place that you wanted to stay-- and a place you knew that you would eventually be ejected from by force.

Once you were in the trap, though, there was no way you could pull yourself back out, especially when you didn’t really want to escape at all. You stayed up for all the nights leading up to the last time you would talk with the bio lab, just thinking about what you would do if everything that had passed by in the last couple weeks was just a figment of an aphrodisiac-induced haze. After all that time, you still didn’t quite know.

But Mina texted you often enough to pull you from that stupor. Thankfully, it wasn’t like one of those stories or dramas, where the main leads somehow fought after their first kiss-- maybe that would’ve been easier than being pulled in deeper. Instead, the two of you talked every day, even if it was only for a little while, and Mina was only worsening whatever situation you couldn’t seem to get out of.

And eventually, the day came where you’d be paid, a day that you had been looking forward to, until you began to dread it.

“Well, doesn’t someone look like a newlywed,” Nayeon greeted at the entrance with a smile, though she didn’t seem to be mocking you. “Come on in, Y/N, we’ll get you started right away.”

The closet was the exact same as it had been the first time that you stepped inside for the interview, but Mina’s smile was much more warm. “Hi, Y/N. How’re you feeling?”

“Good. Fine.” You cleared your throat and attempted to peer at her clipboard. “Questions for me?”

“Yes,” Mina nodded, flipping the pages over. “Are you ready to get started, then? On a scale from one to ten, how attracted are you to me?”

“Ten,” you answered without hesitation this time, and your smile only grew when Mina flushed.

“Okay. Are you considering dating anyone other than me right now?”

“No.” You shook your head, but gulped slightly and leaned back when Mina leaned forward to observe you.

“What about me?”

You paused, blinked, though Mina didn’t seem like she was going to move until you answered, “Yes. I would date you, absolutely.”

She flicked through the pages listlessly before setting them aside and turning back to you. Somehow, Mina looked like she was about to drop a bomb on you, her lips quivering as she calculated the right words. “I... Y/N, I have to tell you something. About the experiment.”

“I’m not going to die, am I?”

Your shitty attempt at humor did manage to prompt a smile from Mina, but she remained serious. “Not that. But- do you understand control groups? In experiments?”

“Um. I think so?” you answered, racking your brain for whatever limited knowledge of science remained with you. “It’s the normal group, right? The one that isn’t experimented on.”

“Yes, just about,” Mina nodded. She reached for your hands and clasped them within hers, eyes pleading for you to understand something that you hadn’t heard yet. “Y/N, you were the control. I... we had to make sure that it was the potion working, and not me, and you- we used you for that. You were never given any potion.”

“I...” you stammered out. Every instinct in you was screaming out to pull away from Mina’s grasp, to question every aspect of your existence that had led up to you being tricked into loving her. Somehow, everything being real only made it feel more fake, even though you now knew that what you had felt was completely you. “I don’t understand.”

Mina said softly, “You fell in love with me, or at least liked me, on your own. You didn’t work as a control group because the same thing happened to you as it did to the others, even though you never took the aphrodisiac.”

“So,” you faltered, “all seven of us fell for you. I’m just the sucker who’s in it for real, huh?”

“I was willing to sacrifice my own feelings for the experiment,” Mina clarified, shaking her head. “I knew I would fall for one of you, but I didn’t think that you, as the control, would be the one who I fell for. And who fell for me.”

Silence fell over the two of you, though you remained there, hands clasped together and eyes meeting with a clarity that speech could never capture. But you tried anyway. “Okay.”

“Just okay?” Mina questioned.

You smiled weakly as a response, “Yeah. Um... how about we go on another date to talk? After you finish interrogating everyone else?”

Mina let go of your hands and let you stand up, but you could feel her smiling at your back as you closed the closet door behind you. Like a repetition of when you thought that you’d be induced into loving her, your heart beat in your throat as you leaned against the wood. 

But when you knew it was real, when you knew that it wasn’t magic seizing you by the hand and pulling you into the unknown, you smiled. Because it felt... right.

The Murder of Anne Marie Fahey

Anne Marie Fahey of Wilmington, Delaware, had had a turbulent, parentless childhood. When she got selected to be the Appointments Secretary for the Governor of Delaware, it was presumed that her life would take a turn for the better.

Thomas Capano, a wealthy and politically involved attorney (the Capano family-owned multi-millions worth of real estate), started a sordid affair with the charming, attractive, and also 17-year-younger, Annie, after spotting her at the governor’s office.

This affair with this narcissistic and controlling millionaire cost her her life. Her diary entries spoke of great pain and misery.

Rich But Manipulative

Tom Capano, like the textbook rich admirer, would gift her clothes, shoes, a TV, books, cash, and appliances and even offered to buy her a car and an apartment. For any young woman on a $30,000 per year salary, his attentions would be flattering.

Undeterred by the fact that he was married, Anne Marie realized too late what sort of a man she was dealing with. She wrote in her diary:

“I allowed someone to take control of every decision in my life … a controlling, manipulative, insecure, jealous maniac.”

He would use his wealth, age, and power to tell her what to wear, what to eat, and who to associate with.

Jealousy Takes Over

Unhappy in her relationship with the millionaire, Anne Marie reportedly started an affair with another man, 31-year-old executive, Michael Scanlan. While Capano was a serial womanizer and had countless affairs with other women, he couldn’t tolerate Anne Marie’s love for someone else.

She had broached the fact that they should break up to him, who, unable to deal with rejection and unwilling to lose control, shot her and got rid of her body. Strangely, Anne Marie kept her relationship with him a complete secretfrom her family and the man she was seeing- which would prevent immediate suspicion on Capano when she disappeared.

Dinner Date Before the Murder

The last time Fahey was spotted in public was with Capano, who had taken her to a trendy restaurant in Philadelphia called Ristorante Panorama. The night of June 27th, 1996, she met him after an email conversation. Both their tones in the e-mails indicated no unfriendliness at all.

This was very different from the beseeching and furious phone calls he had made to her when he found out about her affair with Michael Scanlan. In one email, Capano seemed willing to talk it out with her and end the affair amicably. It was these countless e-mails and the notes her sister found in her diary that would give investigators a clue as to who was behind her disappearance.

Anne Marie Goes Missing

The staff at the restaurant reported that Anne Marie had looked haggard, tired and confused. Capano was domineering, intimidating and would order her meal for her. Neither of them ate much and barely spoke to one another.

By June 30th, when Anne Marie did not show up to her job, her dinner appointment with the man she loved, and didn’t answer any phone calls, her family was swift in calling the police. A missing report was filed, and her apartment was searched. It was uncharacteristically messy, a dress was lying, waiting to be put on, and some grocery was unpacked. Her purse was still home and her car was still parked outside.

Manipulation to Murder: A Web of Lies and Deceit

Capano and Anne Marie’s credit card records were analyzed by the FBI, who had gotten involved because the case spanned two states- Delaware and Pennsylvania. They uncovered a strange purchase of new carpets at Wallpaper Warehouse made by Capano two days after Fahey went missing. The $308 had been used to purchase a rug- police suspected foul play.

Had Capano rolled Fahey’s dead body in the old carpet and thus needed a new one? Capano had requested his housekeeper to not come in for work for a week after the disappearance, and when she did return, she found a love seat and old carpet missing. He had also reportedly inquired about blood-removing products at a local store.

Capano’s shifting stories about the night of the dinner and his behavior, finally made the police search his house. They found two splotches of dried blood- the DNA would later match Anne Marie’s.

Testimony from a site manager further stirred police suspicions; Capano had ordered 4 large dumpsters at a site to be emptied when they weren’t even full. Capano’s brothers sided with him. Thepolice suspected that one of them at least was involved in the murder or the cover-up.

The Brother’s Involvement

Gerry Campano, Tom’s brother, had reportedly sold his boat, and the buyer reported to the police that it had been sold without anchors. With months quickly passing, the police needed a quick lead. They decided to surveil Gerry, collecting information on his illicit drug use and weapon possession.

The FBI raided his house to find several firearms and cocaine in his 3-year-old son’s closet. They offered Gerry a plea deal instead of charges of child endangerment and drug possession.

The plan worked like magic- Gerry admitted that Tom had sought his help in disposing of a body. He told the police that Tom had wanted an extortionist dead, and had borrowed $8,000 and a gun from him. He had returned the gun a month later. Gerry hadn’t seen who the body belonged to when Tom told him he needed the boat on the morning of June 28th, 1996.

A huge marine cooler contained the bodyof Anne-Marie, which was then chucked into the ocean. The cooler would float atop the ocean, and Tom was not having any of it. He took the body out from the cooler, weighed it down with the anchor from the boat. Gerry’s story would corroborate the dumpster-emptying story- the dumpsters contained a couch with bloodstains.

Patterns Emerging — An Unusual Case

This murder case relied more on theory than on evidence. Prosecutors theorized that Capano had brought Anne Marie to his place, where she had waited, unsuspecting, on the love seat. He then shot her, contacted Gerry in the morning to dispose of her body, and then covered his tracks. For the beginning of the trial, the prosecution had no murder weapon, no body, and no witnesses to the crime except Gerry, who hadn’t seen the corpse’s face.

A final, essential piece of evidence would be found by a New Jersey resident, who discovered a cooler, floating in the river and collected it for his use. The cooler had bullet holes from when Tom had tried to get it to sink, and had bloodstains on it.

The barcode on the cooler was a match with the receipt of the cooler Tom Capano had bought some months ago- the prosecution had damning evidence. Many testimonials would help create an airtight case against Capano. The cooler had red fabric stuck in it- a red dress was missing from Fahey’s house.

A Solid Case Against Capano

Restaurant staff were called in to tell how both Fahey and Capano had been acting- she was visibly distressed and he was intimidating. The defense argued that Anne Marie could not have wanted to break up with him as badly as she let on because she continued to accept gifts from him. He, therefore, did not have any reason to kill her.

The prosecution said that she was too scared to break up their affair- Capano had a history of not taking no for an answer. The FBI had a report regarding Capano threatening, stalking, and harassing a female legal intern who had rejected his sexual advances. Close associates also reported that he was a serial womanizer and was very entitled when it came to women responding to him the way he wanted to.

Capano’s shifting stories made him a prime suspect in the eyes of everyone. He once said that the blood on the love seat that he dumped was from Fahey’s period, and then said that she had tried to slit her wrists on the seat. His flummoxed attorneys would constantly ask him to stop changing his stories.

Juries, Trials, and Death

There was no doubt that Capano was responsible for the disappearance and murder of Anne Marie Fahey. The 12-person jury came back with a guilty verdict for first-degree murder on January 17th, 1999, 11–1. Capano was sentenced to death on March 16th,1999.

Since the jury was not unanimous in their decision for the death penalty, Capano’s lawyers appealed for a change in the sentence. The obstruction of justice, premeditation and planning, and ‘statutory aggravation’ in the case was considered sufficient grounds for a death sentence. Execution for a murderer in a case with no murder weapon, no witnesses, and strangest of all, no recovered body was pretty untraditional.

Capano remained in custody, and his death sentence was overturned to life imprisonment in 2006. This was the result of the US Supreme Court ruling in Ring v Arizona, adopted by the state of Delaware. In 2011, he died from a cardiac arrest

My sympathy and love goes out to this poor girl. She should have been able to live a full life, but that was brutally taken away from her.

Drakken stood on the balcony of his apartment in Japan, looking out at the light pollution that blocked the view of the stars from the sky. He was glad for it. He felt he could live the rest of his life without seeing the stars again.

When the vibration of his PDA indicated an email he looked down and noted first, his boss was scheduling an emergency staff meeting in the morning, and second, that it was past midnight. He closed the PDA and stood with a yawn and a long stretch that made the bones in his back crack. Yet another night spent awake far beyond the time he would need to go to bed to get a healthy-night's sleep. Yet another night spent...lamenting his life.

After he had changed into his pajamas and crawled into bed, he began punching the tiny buttons of his PDA's keyboard in reply to his boss.

"Hi Mr. Nakasumi,

"I see that I neglected to mark tomorrow as a personal day on my calendar. I always take June 16th off and I need—

Drakken paused in his composing and deleted the last line, thinking for a moment.

"I need June 16th off every year. I'm so sorry for the late notice but I won't be able to attend the meeting.

Sincerely, Drew Lipsky"

He read over the brief and matter-of-fact email a few times, grateful for the ability to choose words carefully in written communication before hitting send. And after it was done he set the PDA on his nightstand and lay on his back in his bed, dropping the back of one hand over his eyes.

How could he have been so foolish as to forget to block out the date on his calendar?

He felt a familiar and warm sliding sensation as the parasitic mutant vine that was attached to his spinal cord slithered out of its sheath within his back. Drakken lowered his hand and watched the pink flower bloom and hover above his head, as if asking him a question. Drakken scowled at it.

"You could have reminded me, you know!"

The flower jerked slightly, as if indignant to Drakken's scolding. Just then the PDA vibrated on the nightstand. Drakken sighed silently and the flower moved over as if immune to gravity, the vine coiling around the small electronic device before bringing it the short distance to Drakken's hand. He flipped up the cover and opened the new email from his boss.

"We need you at the meeting. I'm sorry, but you didn't block out the date."

Not even signed. Drakken closed the device with a scowl and tossed it aside on his mattress before throwing back the bedcovers and sitting up, running his fingers anxiously through his hair.

He glanced at the TV, with its promise of old sitcom re-runs and bad infomercials. He glanced down the hall toward his kitchen, where peanut butter stickies, cocoa-moo, and practically any number of gluttonous delights awaited. He looked at the computer sitting on his desk, with its beckoning of Minesweeper or solitaire.

He stood and walked back to his balcony, pushing the doors open roughly before stepping out into the slight chill of the night air. The sounds of traffic and city life that had been slightly muffled by the walls were suddenly very present, almost crushing to Drakken's ears. He stepped all the way to the railing and peered down.

Nine storeys. He was nine storeys up.

It wasn't quite enough for the blue splat he desired. He turned away with a disgusted scowl and headed back indoors.

The flower tapped his cheek then as if reminding Drakken of its presence. When he turned to look at it, it appeared as though the bloom was judging him.

"Don't give me that look! This is all your fault!"

And it was the flower's fault. Without the flower, he wouldn't have saved the world. He might also be dead, but... He was more and more frequently coming to the conclusion that dead would be better.

He left the bedroom and headed down the hall to the kitchen, as if he could somehow escape the flower. But he knew...it would always be there. As if he needed the reminder.

In the kitchen he opened the fridge and stared at its contents. There wasn't...anything he wanted. He closed it again and set his forehead against the smooth white door.

He felt the flower move again as if trying to look at him. When Drakken dared glance to the side it was indeed there, staring and questioning if it was capable of those things. Drakken wondered briefly if it did have a sentience, as he'd wondered so many times over the years. But his genius had been too much for even him to decipher, and so he was stuck with a mutant plant parasite, and the world was protected by its many minions.

"What do you want?" he asked the flower. It only continued to face him. "You know I would be better off if you weren't around? I should have just let the doctors try to operate... I'd be better off dead, than...than..."

He trailed off as he closed his eyes and turned his face back into the cool door of the refrigerator.

The morning was going to be hell.

He cringed as he realized he could have just called in sick and no one would have been the wiser. But now that he'd requested the personal day and his boss knew, he couldn't.

"Nghhyah!" he roared out, causing the flower to quickly retreat. He lifted his fists and slammed them into the fridge door, and then turned and set them on his kitchen counter. He bent his aching back forward and rested his forehead on his fists as he tried to figure out what to do.

June 16th. He couldn't work on June 16th. He couldn't do anything on June 16th. And now he had no choice, and it was nearing one o'clock in the morning, and he had to wake up at five, and—

He took a slow breath. Maybe...it was better. Maybe falling asleep during whatever meeting was suddenly so important, and then doing a lack-lustre job for the rest of the day would be enough distraction. It wasn't as if he'd ever found adequate distraction enough in years past, staying home or going out.

Drakken sighed and stood, his aged back protesting even the brief time in the hunched position, and turned to go back to his bedroom. Another night staring at his ceiling fan and wondering where he had gone wrong seemed to be his only option.

He lay down in his bed again, his PDA falling forgotten to the floor as he adjusted his blankets, and then stared wide-eyed at the spinning device on the ceiling that kept the air moving.

June 16th wasn't where he had gone wrong. It was somewhere between that date, and ten days prior—the day he had accepted a medal at the United Nations, and then a pardon.

She... She had smiled at him. She hadn't even been that mad about his vine spinning around them and pulling them tightly together, the image a paparazzo's dream.

Was it later when so many magazines printed that image on the cover? She had looked increasingly startled by them each time a new one came in the mail, but otherwise...he didn't know what she thought. She'd never said a word about them.

Was it after that, when he had told her he was going to take the job with their one-time victim in Japan? A six-figure salary and state-of-the-art technology was hard to argue with, especially when he had learned that it wasn't toys he was making; no, he was to be part of one of the lesser-known branches of the conglomerate that dealt with cybertronics. It was a dream come true!

She had sounded...interested. She'd asked him all sorts of questions about it, at the time. She had even agreed it was the best choice between all of the other offers he had received. She had been completely supportive.

So had he said something wrong...on the night of the fifteenth? It had been her idea to watch movies together. She'd even...

Drakken felt tears running down the sides of his face as he stared up at his ceiling fan, which was slightly shaking in an oscillating pattern one would only notice if they were looking.

She'd even asked him to make cocoa-moo.

They had had fun.

Drakken quickly got up and sat on his heels, bending his face over the bed as his tears fell in large, hot droplets and dampened the blankets.

"What did I do wrong?" he choked out.

After a few heaving breaths he turned his bleary eyes and peered through the dark at his nightstand. The vine emerged from his back again, knowing his thoughts before he even had them, and moved slowly to the nightstand drawer and pulled it open. The flower scooped out the small folded paper that was the drawer's only content and carefully brought it to Drakken, presenting it almost reverently.

Drakken lifted the paper off of the pink petals with shaking hands. It was a receipt; old, and dated back to March of 2006. He'd long ago memorized what was on it. 'Hot stone massage and salt glow package - $140 - Mount Olympus Spa.' Not that that mattered. Or did it? No, it didn't. It was just a piece of paper she had found.

He unfolded the thin receipt and read the words she had penned boldly on the back. He had found the note on her pillow the day after their movie night. June 16th.

'Going solo. Have fun in Japan. —Shego'

Below the words was the imprint of her black lipstick that shone with an iridescent green he had discovered the one time he had looked at the note in sunlight.

He didn't need to see it. He had memorized everything about it long ago: the way she pressed the pen more firmly on downward strokes than upward; the way she didn't quite dot her 'i' but made more of a careless slash above the vowel; the way her lower lip had pressed more firmly than the upper, and how her lips had been slightly parted when she left the final sign of her presence in his life.

He had stared at the note for more hours than was healthy. And if anyone knew he still had it after three years, they would probably say he was losing his mind.

Well...they wouldn't exactly be wrong.

June 16th. She never came out of her room that day. And then he had found the note.

She had just...vanished. Completely. As if off the face of the Earth.

Japan had been willing to wait for him since he was a 'world hero,' and he'd spent months doing nothing but looking for her. He tried every villain connection he had, including those he was on bad terms with. He tried requesting help of government agencies, who were happy to help since he was a 'world hero.' He had finally and desperately asked for help from Kim Possible. But even her computer whiz kid couldn't find Shego. No sightings. No security recordings. No crime reports. She was just...gone.

He folded the note carefully and leaned over to place it back in the drawer, a muscle in his neck spasming as he did so. He winced as he pushed the drawer closed and then sat up slowly, reaching a hand back to massage the aching muscle.

Possible would call in the morning. He would probably miss the call, since he would be yawning through a meeting. But if he was able to take her call, he knew exactly how it would go. He would hold his breath and ask the question. And she would answer sadly that no, there was still no trace of his former side-kick anywhere. Drakken knew without a doubt, that would be the answer. Because Possible wouldn't wait for the anniversary of her disappearance to call if she'd found her.

Drakken stood up and straightened his pajamas and then smoothed out his blankets. He glanced at the TV with its promise of pay-per-view and violent movies. He looked at the hallway to the kitchen where he kept various bottles of spirits that he'd barely ever touched in his villain years. He turned toward the computer on his desk where Internet pornography beckoned.

With a shaking yawn, he crossed the room and stepped out onto his balcony once more. He looked up at the sky that should have been black and dotted with stars, but was instead a golden-gray; nature's beauty interrupted by the ever-present hum of humanity. But he didn't mind.

He could live the rest of his life without ever seeing the stars again.

He brought his gaze down as he stepped to the railing of the balcony and looked over.

Nine storeys. Not enough for the blue splat he desired.

Or, well...perhaps.

Drakken turned back and headed inside, closing the doors behind him. He stared around his darkened apartment again, his gaze finally resting on the ceiling fan as he crawled back upon his bed and lie down, not bothering to slide under the covers.

The flower rose up on its vine and blocked his view of the spinning object on the ceiling. Somehow it looked compassionate, though he still wasn't sure how it could have emotions or how he could know what they were. Its soft petals came down to his cheeks and began drying his tears.

Drakken scoffed at its effort. The flower would be at the task all night.

More ProRevenge from the radio business.

The ProRevenge post that I made yesterday, about the radio business, was well-received. Someone asked me if I had any other stories from radio. This is the only other one that I could think of. It is more about my colleague Petey than about me.

I hope it qualifies as professional level revenge. At the time, it felt pretty pro. THIS IS A VERY LONG STORY.

Here we go:

Once upon a time, when terrestrial radio was popular, Brian was was one-half of a radio morning show. You know the kind that I am talking about, two pleasant personalities giving weather reports, rehashing entertainment gossip and playing a song or two.

I was the advertising sales manager for the station that broadcast his morning show.

Brian came to us from a larger city. Before working with us, he was an entry-level on-air person, doing overnight radio deejay shifts on the weekends and copying commercials from CDs so that they could be put on the air. This kind of job is the lowest position that a person could hold at a radio station. The position has since been replaced by technology.

It is important to understand that geography is critical when understanding the career level and prestige of an on-air and/or radio programming job. A job in a larger city (or most accurately described, a larger media market) usually pays more, has more listeners and is a more prestigious position.

As I mentioned before, Brian came to us from a larger city, which we will call BigVille. When you see BigVille, think LA, NYC, Chicago or San Francisco. The actual city doesn’t matter for this story.

Our station group is in, shall we say, MiddleBurg. My city is in flyover country but is hardly a sleepy little town. Cities like mine are San Antonio, Cincinnati, Salt Lake City and Jacksonville.

Brian’s transition to his job with my company was a huge step up in actual job title. He went from part-time lackey to full-time morning show radio personality. To make that jump, he moved down in market size from BigVille to MiddleBurg.

Brian’s boss, the station program director, was a guy named Petey. He was responsible for everything that was on the air, except commercials (which was my job), including personalities and music.

I think that his peaceful and kind personality was created by the fact that he and his wife had five kids at home. He was used to dealing with strong personalities and emotional conflict. In many tough professional situations, Petey was like the opposite of a catalyst. When he showed up things usually calmed down.

He was also a great person, evidenced by the fact that three of his five kids were adopted out of a foster care.

Over time, it became clear that Brian didn’t like nor respect Petey. It started with little snide comments to coworkers about so-called stupid decisions that he made. Brian’s familiar refrain was, “that’s not how we did it in BigVille.”

Brian made multiple attempts to get Petey fired. He would come into my office and say things like, “Petey’s decided to [insert managerial decision], don’t you think that this a terrible idea. This would never happen in BigVille?” I always just responded by deferring to Petey.

Eventually, it devolved into Brian screaming at Petey on a regular basis. He would get angry about something and unleash his fury. There were multiple instances where he stomped off and told Petey to go fuck himself, that he quit and was going back to BigVille. Brian would cool off and come back a few hours later.

At Petey’s urging, everyone acted as if nothing had happened. “He just needed to vent,” Petey explained.

Through it all, Petey was patient with Brian. The morning show performed fairly well, had many listeners and got good ratings. My sales staff sold gobs of commercials at good rates. We all made money. Petey was content to let Brian be a raging monster to him as long as he performed on air.

The thing is, though, his morning show wasn’t actually that good. It performed well in the ratings because there wasn’t much competition in this particular radio format. That changed a few years later when a competing station put a popular syndicated national program on the air against Brian.

His ratings immediately began to crumble. What was once a dominant morning show in the target demographic, was now facing stiff competition.

It was unclear if Brian even noticed the change. My sales staff and I noticed it. Demand sets prices and we suddenly had a lower-demand product that was selling at lower rates with fewer customers.

Eventually, my boss noticed and it was decided among the group of managers (including Petey and I) that a change needed to be made. If this had been corporate radio then Brian and his on-air partner would have been out-on-their-asses. Fortunately, this was a privately held company and the owners cared about people. One Tuesday, after Petey had just assigned remotes for the following weekend, Brian stomped into his office, which was two doors down from mine. He demanded to know why he wasn’t getting more remotes. Petey calmly explained that he already had two of the six scheduled remotes for the weekend. That wasn’t good enough for him.

Brian then walked to my offices and said something like, “Don’t you think that the station advertisers would prefer to have a top morning show personality doing their remote instead of some random nighttime deejay? That is how we did it in BigVille.”

I replied, “Assigning remote talent is Petey’s responsibility. He will make good decisions for the advertisers and the station.”

He harrumphed, shot out of my office, and flew back to Petey’s, slamming the door.

Petey replied, calmly, “You heard everything he said? You heard him say that he quit.”

“I am pretty sure half of the building heard it.”

Petey requested, “Could you follow me down to the business office?”

“Sure.” I knew what was about to happen.

We walked down to visit with the person in charge of Human Resources, Dolores.

“Brian just gave his resignation to me, verbally in my office. He heard it,” pointing to me. “Is there any additional paperwork that we need to do in order to formalize this?”

Dolores said that it would be best if Petey wrote a memo to Brian, describing what happened in the office, and formally accepting his resignation on behalf of the company.

Then, Dolores began the process of separating Brian from the company. She turned off his access key code to the building and turned off his company email.

Petey prepared the memo.

I wish that I had been at the station when Brian returned. Unfortunately, I was away on a sales call. Here is what Petey and the station receptionist told me:

Brian showed up a few hours after the blow up, like normal. He tried to enter the building through an employee-only side door. His code didn’t work.

He marched around to the front of the building and through the main, public door. Inside of the reception area, he tried his code again, to get through the door into the employee area. The code didn’t work. “Fuck!”

The receptionist called Petey. He flew up to the front with memo in hand.

In the reception area, in front of the receptionist, Petey said, “Brian, your resignation has been accepted. This memo is for you. Would you please sign here that you received it?”

“We will need the keys to the dealer demo that you have been driving.” Petey continued.

Brian detached the key from his ring and handed it over.

The receptionist called him a cab.

Brian sat in front of the station office building, crying, until his cab arrived.

The Ultimate Guide to Adulting in the Philippines (My First Job Application)

Hello, this is the blog that no one asked for but I’m gonna write about it anyways lol So, months after graduating the board exam and applying for med schools, I was stuck at home with nothing to do. I couldn’t apply to the hospitals in my area because the training was for 6 months and if I got hired, I would have to sign a contract saying I would work for the hospital for 2 years. Ain’t nobody got time for that. Joke onli but I just couldn’t commit to such a long contract because I would be going to med school some time around August. So... what a great dilemma, right? After weeks of binge watching Netflix series and playing a bunch of games, I finally couldn’t take it anymore. I kid you not, I could feel my brain rotting away. I was so goddamn bored out of my mind that I decided to look for jobs. 

Step 1: Writing a Resume and Realizing that You Have Nothing To Offer

I of course had to create a resume. It’s a good thing that when I was in college, the creator of jobs180.com had a talk in our college.He’s a really funny guy. Step 2: Realizing That Running Papers is Hard but the Government Requires It

So you’ve gone ahead and made a sick looking resume. You MUST think it’s time to look for a job and apply right? WRONG. Don’t do it yet, sis. Don’t be a pleb like me. Jobs will require you to have a bunch of things like NBI clearance, work permits, Philhealth, PAG-IBIG, SSS, TIN and credentials from your school like a diploma or transcript of records. So before you proceed with looking for a job and applying, I suggest you secure these documents first! Otherwise, after you get accepted at your job, you will be forced to cram all these requirements and you will be tired as fuck just like me! I was so dumb thinking I could get away with working and not having these things. I’m lucky that the company I applied for is very friendly to first timers and they were kind enough to give us a list of requirements for these things.

2.1 Get Yourself a Valid ID

Where to start? Well, sis, you need a valid government ID to get all these things done. How do you get that in the Philippines when the system requires you to have a government ID to claim another government ID?!!? Who the fuck designed this labyrinth of a life right? Fear not! I have a lifehack for you. Just go to your barangay and get a barangay clearance or go to your City Hall (even better if you go during the weekdays so there’s not a lot of people) and get a Cedula. These things don’t require a valid ID you just need to pay. These will serve as your valid IDs. But I really suggest that you get a Cedula because you will need this for other requirements. If you’re 18, you can get a driver’s license in LTO too. Plus, you can order a PSA birth certificate online and have it delivered to your house. Order more than one and immediately have it photocopied. You’re gonna need a lot of those. Always photocopy whatever IDs and important papers that you have. Keep 1 photocopy together with the original in a plastic envelope or plastic filing folder. It must be PLASTIC. Why? So that it’s waterproof. This is something that I learned the hard way. Again, sis, learn from my mistakes. Also, I suggest that you secure at least 2 valid IDs. Why? Because they need one valid ID to confirm the details of the other valid ID. I KNOW. STUPID RIGHT but yeah it needs to be done.

2.2 Next Valid ID: NBI Clearance

The good thing about this is it’s much easier to get this compared to back in the ol’ days. But you need to get this done before you get an actual job just in case you have the same name with a criminal in the Philippines. If you have the same name with a criminal, you will get a ‘HIT’ which will mean that your NBI clearance will get delayed. I was lucky that my name is so unique so I didn’t get a hit and I was able to process my NBI clearance in one day lol. To do this, just go to their website and register online. You have to set an appointment in their website. I suggest you do it in the morning so you can process other things in the afternoon that you might need. You must bring a valid ID as well as a birth certificate. You can pay them online through ebanking services but in my case my mom made me physically go to the bank. Remember to screenshot your reference number, their BDO account number and other details so you won’t get delayed at the bank. You don’t need to print your NBI registration form, but you need to screenshot your Reference number. Idk how it’s done in your NBI site but in my experience, I had to first have my bank deposit receipt authenticated then they gave me a queuing number. When my number got called, I did the biometrics then I presented my PRC ID and my birth certificate. They asked for my reference number so I showed the screenshot on my phone. Then I just waited near the releasing area to be called. Viola! I got my NBI clearance. 

Important Tip: Don’t be a poo poo head. If you’re unsure of where to line up or what the next step is, ASK someone. Even the stranger next to you. I learned that Filipinos are actually polite and helpful if you’re going through the same shit. Kahit introvert ako, nagtanong tanong na ako sa mga katabi ko kasi naiinis ako mag-aksaya ng oras not knowing where to go. Plus, the quicker you get shit done, the sooner you can go home and rest, di ba? Motivation.

2.2. Philhealth, SSS, PAG-IBIG With Minimum Hassle? ask me how 

Don’t be intimidated. These things can be done online! You just have to be very patient and fill out their online forms as soon as possible and as accurately as you can. I suggest you do Philhealth first coz (god forbid) what if you get sick and hospitalized from all the anxiety of job searching? Ya need Philhealth to cover for your sick ass. Don’t forget to print your MDR form just in case your employer asks for it. The website is kind of wonky. Once I logged out, I couldn’t log back in and recover my MDR so I had to manually fill it out haist. You can for this this through the bank too and then when you get the confirmation from Philhealth that they got your payment, bring the receipt to the nearest branch and get your ID! The whole process takes about 3 days. While it’s pending, apply for SSS and PAG-IBIG too. You have to do PAG-IBIG as soon as you can coz they process kind of slow. It takes approximately 3-4 days for you to get your PAG-IBIG number but at least you can text them to get an update about your application. When you apply for SSS online, they email you some forms. So print these forms ASAP and have them photocopied too. Once you have done this, congrats! You’re almost done!

Step 3: Looking For An Actual Job Without Experience and Realizing that All Jobs Need Experience

Wow, after going through all that trouble you now realize that there are no jobs out there for your field? All the salaries they offer are so low? Why the hell does everything require 2 years of experience?! And why are all the jobs so far away??? Sis, I feel you! I was so stressed out looking for a job online too! I really did not know where to start. So here’s what I did. I signed up for all the common job hunting websites coz my logic was, surely, these companies wouldn’t post ads in these websites if they weren’t actually actively looking. Right? Well, again.. I was WRONG. Some companies take so long to reply so you have to be very patient. Really, really patient. Don’t be sad if a company doesn’t reply immediately just think that maybe their HR is swamped or something. So for me, I signed up for Jobstreet, Glassdoor, Upwork, LinkedIn and Fastjobs. The good thing is that these things can be downloaded on your phone and you can turn on notifications for them so they will alert you for possible job opportunities. Step 4: Going to your first job application and Interview!

Let’s just assume that you got an interview or a call. (Keep your phone close by at all times and answer calls from unknown numbers politely because chances are, it’s one of the jobs you applied for calling) Dress for success if you’re gonna go for an interview. I dressed up in a corporate attire even if it wasn’t require coz I was trained by my Uni to do it that way eh. Besides, you will feel more formal and more serious if you’re dressed for the job talaga. For the interview, speak slowly and clearly. If you’re not confident, well, FAKE your confidence. SMILE and don’t be afraid to ask your employer questions. For the job i was applying for, we even had an online test which took HOURS. Lol. They were testing our english, active listening and typing skills. It’s a real good thing that I am a fast typer coz I scored the highest in their typing test. They require only 25wpm but I can type around 60 wahahahaha. 

Tip: I suggest you go sit beside someone who you know is already done with the interview and ask him/her how it went. Then you can prepare your answers ahead of time. They usually ask the same set of questions coz who the hell has time to come up with personalized questions for every applicant. Sis, ako talaga introvert ako eh pero wala chinika ko pa rin yung mga katabi ko. hahaha ano namang masama sa pagtatanong? Eh pare-pareho naman kayo ng pinagdadaanan, right?

Step 5: Submitting All Their Requirements and Contract Signing

Well, you’did it, sis! You’ve gone and landed yourself a job! Time to get moolah! But wait, there’s more....hold your horses for one minute. Your employer is probably gonna require a few things still so be prepared. 

Make sure that during this time, you are healthy and fit coz they’re probably gonna make you undergo a physical exam. For my job, the company shouldered my PE so haha I paid nothing. I had to get examined by a doctor wherein she did the routine things like a breast exam and reviewing my medical history with me. Also, I had to get an Xray, CBC, Urinalysis and Drug testing done so make sure that you drink lots of water before going to the hospital so you can pee easier. And for urinalysis don’t catch the first drops of urine, rather, catch the midstream so that the sample is cleaner and you won’t be positive for pus cells or bacteria. And don’t do the urinalysis if you have your menstruation because you will automatically be positive for RBCs and that’s a big no no. Wait for your menstruation to be over before you do this test. 

Next, you’re probably gonna have to get a work permit coz in the city where your job is located. And how do you get this??? Well, just go to the city hall, pay for the work permit at the treasury department and then get your work permit at the work permit station (just ask the guard where this is located). Don’t forget to bring your cedula coz this is what they require to get a work permit. 

After completing all this shit, you can submit your requirements to your employer and sign the contract! Just make sure to read it carefully. Viola! Job well done to all of us!

Now the hard part starts... training and actually going to work.

10 Reasons You’re Not Getting Job Interviews — And How to Turn It Around

The job market is more competitive than ever. If you’re one of the many seekers, you might feel discouraged right now. You send out scores of resumes and monitor your inbox like a kid awaiting holiday gifts, and — nothing. Or, worse, you had an interview and you didn’t get the job. Why?

If you’re asking, “Why can’t I get an interview or a job after one?” then you need to take a step back and a deep breath. Issues with your resume, approach, attitude, or all of the above can hinder your opportunities. In a competitive market, you need every edge you can get. Read on to discover how to improve your chances of success.

The Great Resume Ghostland

You find a position that’s ideally suited to your experience and abilities. You know that you’d be the perfect fit — but days pass and you don’t hear anything. It’s enough to make anyone throw up their hands.

You might feel tempted to yield to catastrophic thinking. If you are a recent graduate, you might feel like the deck is stacked against you and the situation is hopeless. If you had a solid career track, you might think, “I’m too old, and I’ll never find anything that pays near the salary and benefits I deserve.” These concerns are valid. It’s a tight market and ageism does exist.

However, giving in to despair will only hinder your progress and potentially lead you to make unwise decisions. Do a mindfulness meditation to center yourself and realize that employers ghost applicants for reasons that have nothing to do with you, your skills, or bias.

When you submit your resume online, crawlers scan your resume for specific keywords. If your document lacks them, no humans may ever know you applied. The best way to avoid this black hole is to carefully read all job descriptions and sprinkle the same language they use throughout your CV.  You should customize each application, anyway.

Sometimes you don’t get a response because there’s simply no time. Hiring managers have the same 24-hour day as everyone else, and with the glut of recent applicants, their desks are overflowing. If you find a position that’s to-die-for, follow up after five days if you haven’t heard anything. Doing so might not work, but making a phone call to ensure the organization received your application will get your name on their radar. Familiarity matters, and even if you don’t land that role, you could remain on their minds when other opportunities arise.

Why Can’t I Get a Job Interview?

However, sometimes you don’t get called because you made a mistake. If you notice an error, don’t beat yourself up. However, do check the following factors so that you’re not stuck asking, “Why can’t I get a job interview?”

1. You Don’t Follow Instructions

Job applications can include a host of demands. Jobs in the education sector, for example, often require you to write essays about your teaching philosophy. Other roles may require you to complete various aptitude tests. Some applicants go so far as to skip the online application entirely and email their resume directly. This behavior doesn’t do anything to ensure a potential employer that you’re the type of individual they can trust to follow company rules and policies.

2. You Don’t Highlight Your Soft Skills

Your future employer wants to know about the degrees, certificates, and licenses you carry. However, if you neglect to add things like your ability to work well with others and to remain calm in a crisis, hiring managers can pass your application over even if you meet the qualifications listed in the posting. Some 89% of talented professionals say that bad hires typically lack soft skills like the organizational ability.

When you do list things like “excellent time management” on your resume, back it up with concrete examples. Did you never miss a deadline at your former employer? Make sure to mention it — and back up your assertion with a reference from someone in your company who can attest to your promptness.

3. You List Responsibilities, Not Accomplishments

If you are just starting, you might not have many things to list. Likewise, if you haven’t had to search for some time, you might forget the resume skill of highlighting your accomplishments. Consider these two examples:

Stocked shelves — If your only job to date was in a grocery store, you might scratch your head at how to describe your achievements. This statement tells the hiring manager what you did — but not much else.

 Increased revenue by 10% by improving facing procedures — Now you’re cooking with gas. Anyone who has ever worked in a market has probably stocked shelves. How did you do your job differently and better than others to improve your employer’s bottom line?

What if you are fresh out of high school and have never held a job before? Don’t worry! When listing your accomplishments, look to the following examples for inspiration:

 Maintained an X.X GPA for three years — Do you hit the books? This statement is the ideal way to prove it.

Ran a babysitting service while balancing perfect attendance — Remember how crucial soft skills are? This accomplishment shows a potential employer that you take initiative and possess impressive time-management skills.

Remember, being specific about your skills and accomplishments can make all the difference.

4. You Don’t Tailor Your Resume

You’re applying to a list of jobs longer than a CVS receipt. Do you have to tweak your resume for each one? If you hope to obtain any of the positions you apply for, the answer is “yes.”

Fortunately, you don’t have to write a new document for each listing. You can use techniques like reordering and removing components to make your resume customized to the advertised role. Instead of looking at this exercise as futile when you feel discouraged, think of it as preparation for the interview that you’re sure to score. You’ll want to take copies with you when you get the call, and reviewing the version you prepared will remind you what this employer values.

5. You Don’t Meet the Minimum Requirements

You want to pursue your ambitions, but applying for jobs that you know you lack the qualifications for is a sure ticket to the disappointment train. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t investigate other opportunities at the same organization. Your ambition could come in handy.

There are no guarantees in the job market, but you could try the following approach.

Write an email to the individual listed as the point of contact and express your interest in working with them. You could say, “I recently saw your listing for X position. While I lack the minimum experience required for this role, I’m impressed by your organization’s structure and values. I’d welcome an opportunity to learn while providing value. Do you know of any open positions that match my qualifications?”

The answer is always “no” if you don’t ask.

6. You Don’t Explain Employment Gaps

If you are a seasoned career professional, you may have years when you didn’t work. Perhaps you had an automobile accident that temporarily impeded your ability to work, or maybe you took time off to raise a family. You need to remember that potential employers don’t keep crystal balls on their desks. Unless you explain the discrepancy, they may interpret it as a red flag that you’re not hireable.

You can explain your circumstances in your cover letter. When you do, stick to the facts and be brief. Do mention that the situation was temporary and will not impact your performance if selected.

7. You List Your Job-Hopping History

Does your resume resemble so much Swiss cheese? If so, you have some explaining to do, but you might not make it to the interview stage. You might have valid reasons, but to a hiring manager, a string of jobs lasting less than a year makes you look flighty and unreliable.

Consider highlighting only those positions that pertain most closely to the position for which you’re applying and where you have references. Doing so may mean you give up experience points if you don’t have much relevant work history, but it’s better than looking like you jump ship the second things get hectic in the office.

8. You Missed a Critical Deadline

When you read the job description, pay careful attention to the deadlines. Treat your search like a small business. Make a detailed spreadsheet that tracks all pertinent information, including application due dates, follow-up dates, and names and contact information of critical individuals. You can refer to this document when you create your daily to-do list to stay organized.

9. You Use the Wrong File Format

This advice could fall under following directions, but it could have a long-term impact on your future job prospects. If the advertisement requires you to email your resume in a specific file format, make sure you do so. Otherwise, your recruiter won’t be able to open your documents and they won’t waste their limited time trying to figure out the conversion.

There are ample free tools available online, so make use of them to perfect your materials before sending them.

10. You Make Careless Errors

You’ve heard the advice a million times and you still didn’t run a spelling and grammar check before submitting your resume. That careless mistake could cost you your future dream job.

When it comes to getting interviews, check and recheck your application for any careless mistakes. Since spell-check alone won’t catch every error, use a free browser extension like Grammarly as a secondary measure. Finally, have someone you trust to proofread your submission before saying your good-luck mantra and hitting send.

Why You Didn’t Get a Job After the Interview and How to Fix It

You finally got the phone call you’ve been waiting for, and you think you aced the interview. However, a week passes and you don’t hear back from the organization. When you reach out to them, they inform you that they have decided to move forward with other candidates.

Why are you not getting the job after your interview? Sometimes, companies go through the process even when they know they have an internal candidate whom they intend to promote to the position to fulfill legal requirements. In that instance, there’s little that you can do. However, sometimes, your behavior during the process needs some tweaking.

Arrive Promptly and Dress Appropriately

Few things raise a hiring manager’s ire more quickly than looking at their watch and wondering if you will show. Strive to arrive approximately 10 minutes ahead of your scheduled appointment, but don’t go earlier than that. If you have to drive a considerable distance, stop at a nearby coffee shop for a latte if you have extra time. Just be careful not to spill it on your interview clothes!

The same rule applies, albeit slightly differently, for online interviews. At least 10 minutes before your scheduled meeting, check to ensure all audio and visual equipment is working correctly. Technical difficulties do occur in the workplace, but one of the aspects your recruiter analyzes is your degree of tech-savviness. They might think, “If she can’t get her webcam working for our meeting, will she make a similar foible with a client?”

Remember to review the company’s or interviewers’ dress policies before preparing your outfit for interview day — if they haven’t provided you with guidelines, always err on the side of professional, modest dress. 

Smile and Appear Confident

There is one upside to the COVID-19 pandemic — you have a ready excuse for not shaking your interviewer’s hand. If you tend to get sweaty paws when you’re nervous, you can breathe a sigh of relief. However, you still need to smile and exude confidence.

When you have an online interview, it’s more challenging because you can see yourself on the screen. Try to ignore the sidebar where your picture appears. Instead, act as if you are face-to-face with the hiring manager and strive to be as natural as possible. Remember to be positive and polite, but don’t get too friendly or become inappropriate.

Turn Off Your Devices

Few things are ruder than having your cell phone beep in the middle of your interview — except, of course, for answering it. If you can’t resist the urge to check notifications, you don’t need to ask why you didn’t get the job after your appointment. Leave it in your car if you have to sneak a peek when it vibrates.

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare

Finally, take the time to research the organization thoroughly before you arrive for your appointment. Check them out on social media and read the company blog to get insight into their culture and practices. Click on the “investor relations” tab on their website to get an idea of their financial health. The last thing you want is to take a position only to undergo a round of layoffs a month later.

I'm sorry to treat Larry and Sergey as one person. If you start from successful startups, and it seems to me the increasing cheapness of starting a startup—so important that morale alone is almost enough to determine success.1 I dislike being on either end of it they had built a real, working store.2 People started to dress preppy, and kids who wanted to seem rebellious made a conscious effort to insulate the other founder s from the details of the process. Nor did they work for big companies I propose the following experiment. But at least you know where the seam is, and the next you're doomed. If you happen to be that type of founding team, you're effectively a single founder when it comes to empathy are practically solipsists. This was why they were trying to get good grades to impress employers, within which the employees waste most of their money from a few technologies that turned out to be bad.

A few years ago an Italian friend of mine travelled by train from Boston to New York via Memphis. Ambitious people started to think of ideas. That may come into it.3 That sort of thing you'd expect Google to do.4 Organic ideas feel like inspirations. Raising money is not when you need it, or make it longer, or make it longer, or make it longer, or make it longer, or make the windows smaller, depending on the application. And getting rejected will put you in a slightly awkward position, because as you'll see when you start fundraising, the expected value of an investor who won't lead is zero, so talk to such investors last if at all.5 Why doesn't someone make x? I think there will still be a good thing for investors that this is the exact moment when technological progress stops. This essay is derived from a guest lecture at Harvard, which incorporated an earlier talk at Northeastern. 3 contract issues that got expensive

Written contracts protect both sides from misunderstandings and can put your relationship on equal ground. Whether you are joining a practice as an associate, intending to pursue a sale/purchase, or you are hiring someone, a contract helps you start your relationship on the right foot.

The following examines three scenarios where contract misunderstandings turned into serious problems. The ADA Center for Professional Success offers an e-book, Dentist Employment Agreements: A Guide to Key Legal Provisions, that includes a wealth of details and sample contract language.

Scenario 1: I didn’t read my contract carefully, and now I owe my employer money.

Problem: Dr. Sam had recently graduated dental school and was excited to land her first job. The HR department assured her that she was signing a “standard contract,” so she skimmed it to double check the salary, benefits and start date. She even got a signing bonus that she put toward home renovations.

Eight months later, Dr. Sam’s husband was offered a fantastic job in another city where they had family. She started looking for a job in the new city and turned in her notice. Her current employer invoiced her for the signing bonus. Dr. Sam then realized that the contract required her to stay for at least 24 months to keep the full bonus.

Solution: Every contract must be read closely, more than once, and by more than one person. A lawyer should review your contract and point out anything that might be unusual or impact your future flexibility.

Pay special attention to:

Bonuses that are tied to performance or production goals

How long you must stay in the practice

Any non-compete clauses that may limit your future career growth

If you do receive a signing bonus or similar payment, resist the urge to spend it immediately. Instead, talk to your accountant or financial advisor about a short-term savings or investment vehicle where you can access it if the need arises.

Scenario 2: I didn’t bother to get a written contract.

Problem: Dr. Mike hit it off with the owner of a small practice. They shared a philosophy of care and even a love of hiking. From the initial interview, it felt like a great match. So when Dr. Mike was offered the job with just a handshake agreement, he did not hesitate.

In his first year, Dr. Mike was a rockstar, exceeding his production goals and becoming popular with patients and staff. He expected a bonus and a raise but was told that they had not agreed to it. The relationship became awkward and uncomfortable, and Dr. Mike felt he had to leave the practice.

Solution: As tempting as it can be to skip the hassle of a written contract, the reality is that verbal contracts are significantly more difficult to uphold and can lead to misunderstandings. Push for a written contract that details:

Every aspect of compensation, including how and when bonuses will be earned and paid

Non-compete terms

Agreements on how a transfer of ownership will occur

How coverage and other responsibilities will be divided

Scenario 3: I had a change of heart.

Problem: Dr. Alex intended to sell the practice to a new associate, Dr. Bob, after two years. They signed a simple contract that lacked details. However, Dr. Bob changed his mind. With a growing family, he no longer wanted the hassles of owning a practice or working full time.

Dr. Alex became frustrated because his retirement was postponed, and he had to start over to find a new buyer. If Dr. Bob wanted to remain on part-time, he would need to be officially re-hired by the new owner. This meant more headaches and paperwork for everyone.

Solution: A contract should clearly spell out every element of a practice sale, including penalties for changing the terms. For example, the contract should include:

The specific timeline and milestones for the sale

How and when the purchase price should be determined (typically a valuation is done at the beginning of the relationship and again at one year)

Which method(s) will be used to value the practice

Valid reasons to void the agreement without penalties, such as death or disability

Penalties for non-compliance, including promissory notes, voiding/alteration of non-compete clauses and voiding/alteration of contractual obligations to remain in the practice

Remember, a written contract protects both sides and is worth the lawyer fees to avoid future problems. If the owner refuses a formal contract, write everything down and send it via email to the owner with a read receipt attached. Keep all these communications for your records.

A good contract takes some thought, but it can pay off by keeping things fair and open — the keys to a successful relationship and practice transition.

A Field Guide to Quitting a Job in Public Accounting

That is the look of a man who no longer bears the yoke of a Big 4 job.

Are you fantasizing about quitting your public accounting job?

It’s finally March. Busy season will start to wind down soon and those miserable hours will begin to taper off. You may catch yourself daydreaming about finding another job with more balance, less travel, and a higher salary. But, forcing you back to reality is that fact that even the thought of leaving makes you feel like your tumbling into an unknown abyss headfirst? Quitting a job is terrifying.

The doubts start circling like sharks in your mind:

Am I making the right decision and is the timing right so I don’t burn any bridges?

Will I regret it later that I didn’t stay longer? To senior? To manager? To — gasp — senior manager?

Do I have enough experience to venture out without the public accounting safety net?

Two weeks ago, Jason Bramwell gave you some sound advice on how to decide if the time is right to go into industry. There is a lot to consider, of course. Quitting feels like failing in any job. The profession chews lots of people up and spits them back out; it has nothing to do with you.

When you’ve decided it’s time to take the plunge, here’s what to do:

Step 1: Notice

Keep it short, sweet, and vague. While writing a letter of resignation can be very therapeutic, don’t spill your guts out. Keep it professional. Something like this will do:

XYZ Accounting Firm

Anytown, NY 12345

  Dear Mr. Lumbergh,

I am writing to notify you that I am resigning from my position as Senior Associate with XYZ Accounting Firm. My last day of employment will be April 30, 2018.

I have enjoyed all of the incredible opportunities I have experienced at XYZ Accounting Firm, as well as your mentorship and support. I have nothing but respect for this firm and our outstanding team.

I intend to assist with the transition and will work with all of my engagement teams to ensure transfer of duties is completed without difficulties.

Sticking around two weeks is standard. If you’re lower level staff, resist the urge to stay for a month or two to assist with the hand-off of clients and engagements duties. I promise, once you start winding down your engagements, you don’t want it to drag on forever.

Decide when it would be a good time to break the news. Don’t drop it on the team right before a big client meeting. That’s just rude. Be considerate. If you’re never in the office, and rarely see your manager, emailing your letter will do in a pinch. Of course, setting up a time in person is always better. Just be sure to send it with a read receipt, or it may drive you crazy wondering if your manager got it or not.

If you’re emailing the letter, be sure to print and sign the hard copy. A handwritten signature is always best.

Step 2: Your supervisor pulls the HR trigger

Your superior has likely had training about what to say in these situations. Expect some bargaining. Maybe you just need some space and time off? Your manager will try to think of alternative ways (within their authority) to keep you at the firm. Don’t expect this to get you a big raise or anything crazy, however.

One thing that you supervisor is guaranteed to ask, one last time, is “Are you sure?” Be prepared to hold your ground if you’re serious about making the job change. Once your supervisor notifies HR, you’ll start the formal out-processing checklist and get a landslide of emails to make it official.

Step 3: Elation or sleepless nights

After you rip the band-aid off, you can feel many emotions: Pure elation; relief that you never have to step foot into your least favorite client’s office again. On the flip side, it can shift into fear and a feeling similar to buyers remorse. All those thoughts you had before you quit are not louder than ever (especially when you get ready to go to bed at night), namely “Was this a good decision?” and “Did I leave too early in my career and now it’s too late?”

Try to be helpful as you wrap things up, and leave the team member taking over for you lots of notes. It’s better to have a graceful departure than metaphorically setting a fire and walking away. Don’t forget to send out an email to your co-workers letting them know how to keep in touch. Your team may even have a going away lunch on your last day to send you off in style.

Step 4: Finding a new job

It’s always advisable to line up a new job before you hand in your notice, but it doesn’t always happen. That’s OK. I will say, however, having another job lined up will help combat the feeling you’ll be living in a cardboard box, unable to pay your student loans if you quit.

Either way, recruiters like working with people who are leaving public accounting (easy payday for them), so it’s relatively easy to assemble a team of them to help you. When your office phone rings with a cold call from one, don’t hang up right away. Ask them to send you an email. It can’t hurt to build some relationships (or at least get their contact information) before you’re ready to leave, so you know who to call when the timing is right.

Step 5: What’s next?

If you missed it, Jason Bramwell interviewed 14 controllers about their transition to industry last month. Now, I’m sure all of them did have “fond memories of their time in public accounting, and some envisioned they’d spend their entire careers there.” At least that’s what I would say too. No one wants to hear about your sour grapes… unless it’s anonymously in the GC Open Items. We’ll listen.

Once you turn in your laptop and have your new job offer in hand, don’t forget to space out your last day at the old job and first day at the new job (if you can swing it financially.) It’s the perfect time to take a vacation without worrying about someone from work interrupting your much needed time off. Enjoy a mojito for me!
