Ladies Irabeth and Anevia Tirabade.

That was going to take getting used to.

Irabeth looked down at her mug of ale and half wondered if that meant she needed to start developing a tongue for wine instead. Then she needed only one look towards Anevia enjoying her own and threw the thought aside as pointless.

“So ‘Beth,” Anevia asked with a grin on her face as she leaned back against the wall, “What do you think your first decree will be?”

“‘Nevi, it’s not that kind of ennobling,” Irabeth sighed, even as she smiled. The two were sitting at a bench in a quieter hall in the Drezen Citadel, the victory celebrations well underway.

Among the honors given for the victory was the ennobling of those heroes from humble origins who wished to lay down roots in Mendev or hailed from the kingdom itself. Irabeth had of course intended to stay and help her homeland, and had thought nothing of it when Galfrey had asked what her postwar plans might be after the post-Threshold debriefing.

Evidently, she had signed off on her own medal. That really was what this noble status was feeling like. At the very least, if Galfrey had any land in mind she had not mentioned it. Yet? Hopefully not.

“Though I do think the first thing we need to do is make sure others get their recognition,” Irabeth picked up. “Rovus has done an incredible job in Kenabres: he deserves credit too.”

Anevia nodded. “No questions there.” She took another drink, then looked towards the Eagle Watch banner in its place among the many orders that made up the crusade. “We’ve taken it a long way, haven’t we? The Watch, that is. Remember when we first got it?”

“I remember. An order kept in Kenabres on garrison duty because they were the nice version of Hulrun,” Irabeth was being quite diplomatic there. ‘Andoran arrogance’ might have been a better way of putting it, as the Watch was founded by an Eagle Knight that believed it to be his task to cleanse the crusaders of corruption and vices. They spent more time clutching pearls over drinking too loudly or dressing immodestly than actually hunting cultists. “Then their new leader was none other than a cultist of Baphomet. It should have been the end of it there, yet Galfrey thought I could save it.”

“She was right,” Anevia happily put a hand on her wife’s shoulder. “Had some rough spots along the way, but you turned the Eagle Watch from an order of pretentious prigs to an actual cult-finding force that could save a city under siege. Come on, ‘Beth, celebrate yourself a bit! Queen all but pinned it on your chest.”

Irabeth glanced down - yes, the queen had marked her for their valor.

“Alright ‘Nevi, but if you start acting like Count Arendae, I’m taking you right home.”

“Ah c’mon,” Anevia leaned in closer to whisper, “That’s for after the party.”

Irabeth blushed.

but when I looked up whether this reference this was intentional, I found this old movie
