so do you think there will be a new wave of Something like dream manhunts were or dsmp (though qsmp seems promising af in smp department) that will bring hype back and make everyone obsessed? or did people generally become normal enough after the pandemic and unlikely will reach that level of commitment?

From a surface skim it feels like you’re asking if I think fandom in general is going to still exist, to which the answer is always going to be yes. DSMP and manhunts were massive because of timing and skill level, blowing normal transformative fandom practices to new levels of visibility from the number of people who were interested/involved, but fandom is old as dirt and a lot of these practices came well before and will continue long after. Things a lot less hype get this type of attention, it’s just harder to spot from the outside unless you’re looking for it.

(Fun fact, or at least a phenomenon that I haven’t heard people taking about yet: the pandemic actually boosted fandom productivity in general. Me and a friend discovered that old fandoms that hadn’t gotten content or budged in years had a surprising influx of work across the board, especially if they were old comfort media. It seems like a lot of fandoms got a buff on top of what would happen normally.)

I think that the manhunts and other videos were a good mainstream hook to fall down the rabbit hole of DSMP, which is were a lot of the deep investment came from. Dream proved himself as a skilled player and an interesting protagonist, the foot in the door that would eventually seed interest in the DSMP. (Tommy held up the other half of this momentum by taking the role of the shounen protagonist down the line, a good POV character for the younger crowd.)

The DSMP wing of MCYT has had a lot of comparisons to Homestuck fandom for different reasons, but one of them is the intensity and involvement with the content. I remember passing by a post years back in awe of the fact that someone whipped up a shockingly competent overnight cosplay for an update that came out the previous day. At a convention hotel. The devil worked hard but Homestuck fans worked harder, and that’s one of the first impressions I got from the DSMP fandom, everyone was operating at that tier of involvement. I can say for a fact that it is possible to have a fandom lean towards Homestuck-level involvement while people are still in school because there was no pandemic when Homestuck was snowballing in popularity and people were still living that fandom moment-to-moment. I think the key ingredients are for a massively complicated story with interesting characters to always be updating frequently yet randomly-- Drinking from a fire hose tier content. I think the secret ingredient is that the people watching never really switch off, the chances of a content drop are always there so it makes more sense to always (kind of) be thinking about it. That was Twitch in a nutshell for the pandemic, it was something larger-than-life-shaped that people could follow along with in their new “wealth” of free time, in and out of character.

If we’re talking about DSMP (people not server itself) and co in particular ever getting that kind of hype again, that seems less likely because of the choices that have been made lately. Aside from most people pulling back and scaling down from fatigue and other natural causes, nobody seems to have anything going on that feels as expansive as the DSMP other than Quackity. (Leaving this open ended because apparently Dream has something cooking, we’ll see if that becomes relevant later.) I think QSMP and karmaland are big beyond the language barrier, it’s just hard to see from an English POV.

It’s probably impossible to fully take stock of all the things that poured fuel on what supercharged the scene we’re talking about. (Side-note locking me in to talking about how people needed to romanticise internet life and how the incidental dynamics of mcyt met that need, will do soon.) I think it benefited from being a trend, people tend to like the novelty of a rising star but new-ness naturally fades. People are also getting good with talking about how a good amount of appeal to the content was being able to be part of the fandom (Infinite content, absolute goldrush, a full buffet), so people coming and going will influence what happens as well. For better or for worse people recognise that fandom activity and expectations are what really blew the DSMP as a phenomenon to new heights, even when the fandom was kind of dragging the DSMP along behind it in its momentum.

I feel like we won’t be due for something that snowballs into being that intense for a while, but that may not be a bad thing. Something more measured and easy to consume and less overwhelming is better suited to the pace of a lot of peoples lives right now. I’ve got my four year superstition and also knowledge of the old Yogscast and Mindcrack waves, all of this seems tied up in the way that Minecraft itself tends to ebb and flow over time—there’s a boom and then a lull by nature.

People may become distracted or short on time, but they’ll never get normal, anon. If there’s one thing I stand firm on it’s that people who define normal by being aloof to things just don’t know enough about what’s going on in other peoples lives, people are off the wall by nature.

Pythia was chosen to be XD’s seer. This was a bit before the events of the DSMP as a whole so she had time to get used to her power

She does her visions for free! Whenever someone asks she almost always says yes unless she’s drained. However for a time they weren’t free when Schlatt peer pressured her to make a profit off of them and made her move to Manberg. She.. wasn’t as happy when she did that but she was too nervous to back out.

She tries so so hard not to interfere with what’s happening. She knows she can’t prevent fate from happening but when she sees the visions it scares her so much, so she tries to not get attached.

One of the only people she became very attached to was Foolish though, and when she had a vision of his canon life being gone she tried her best to convince him not to go but failed. So she ended up begging Bad to be invited and it worked- but she couldn’t prevent his death sadly.

Her visions can get PAINFUL. whenever there’s pain involved in her vision she gets really bad Phantom pains that intensify depending on how bad it is. So.. she has fun!

Also when she’s “too deep” into a vision she begins leaking green liquid from her eyes and mouth. It’s from her powers that XD gave her.

Her relationship with XD is complicated. On one hand she does worship him, on the other hand he messes with her and plays with her like a toy. This lessened when he met George and Foolish, but it was still there. The best way to describe their relationship is a warlock and their patron.

He does care about her some, but she doesn’t believe it sometimes since they have had arguments which ended up harming their relationship.

The summary of her in a nutshell is: tired, scared, and in need of a hug and a break

so "i know the end" by phoebe bridgers is one of my favorite songs ever. according to wikipedia it is about "depression, euphoria, and the apocalypse". obviously, not all of it fits with cpurpled but some lines really just. ough. i'm not gonna do the whole song just my favorite parts.

i think of this as cpurpled being homesick and yearning to go back to his home planet where he can just. fucking chill. romanticize a quiet life and all. maybe he doesn't even necessarily want to go back to his home planet. but he wants the quiet of being alone.

do i even need to say anything. cpurpled is mean. even people who he used to be friendly with, he's ruined their relationships. ponk, jack manifold, maybe even bedwarsiblings if you want to go down that route.

he's ambitious. in crises, purpled doesn't back down. he's always running towards danger (both lmanberg wars, red banquet, etc). he's not going to go down with the rest of las nevadas. he's going to chase his legacy, chase the chances he has.

it's escapism. cathartic, a little, to scream along while driving. it's something he'd do. and you can't tell me cpurpled doesnt listen to "rap country songs". and then the last two lines relate to las nevadas. the slaughterhouse could be the killing of slime, the outlet malls and slot machines are just las nevadas in a nutshell. fear of god is a bit more tricky because i don't think purpled believes in any godly supernatural force, or care about said force's opinion if it did exist. but quackity fears someone who thinks himself a "god" (dream). in the end, though, it wasn't dream who killed quackity's best friend.

obviously spaceship = purpled. but the "either way, we're not alone" is so. he's not alone. well, he's lonely and doesn't have anyone, but on the DSMP and especially with las nevadas no one leaves him alone. and in the next lore stream i dont think quackity's going to leave him alone either.

finally, "i'll find a new place to be from". "purpled from UFO". please get what im going for here. he WAS from UFO. that was his legacy, but he's finding new places to be from, to build a legacy. even before LN, this is such a big cpurpled line. he finds a new place to be from. the dsmp in general. lmanburg. his cave base. and then las nevadas.

"not afraid to disappear". well we haven't seen him in 280 days. he just does stuff on his own with his dog, disappearing from everyone else. "turned around, there was nothing there" nothing of his legacy left. and then "yeah i guess the end is here". he's accepted it. yeah, the end IS here. and he'll make sure the end is here for quackity's legacy too

/dsmp lore discussion, all further things are about characters and happenings in the story!

Something I've learned to highly appreciate in this server's story is how they know how to not take something too seriously and lose the essence of the smp. The smp was always meant for goofing around in a server group of ppl, have fun and bring ppl together. The whole stream itself was just a nutshell of what the dsmp had become, a compelling and emotional story, yet with funny and weird aspects that gets just as appreciated.

We're talking about a story about a guy fcking a fish, birthing a fox, and him lying about being british, how is that not a perfect representation of what the smp is at that point? Its about bringing a nation together with a drug van, a nation called el rapids, mexican dream, hillary clinton's face on a damn lore stream of all things, and so much more.

It's all so funny and ridiculous that it hits hard when it starts being genuinely emotional. The ridiculousness is there but despite that, we learn to appreciate the story in its entirety. Tommy threatening Wilbur to stay with him through his journey is showing how much he resented Wilbur not because he was angry at him, but the fact that he needed Wilbur and lost him right when he needed him the most. Just now that he has his brother figure, he's losing him again, and he cant have that one good thing disappear just like before.

Despite that need and desperation though, Tommy let Wilbur go knowing this was Wilbur's decision whether he liked it or not. He expected explosions or some form of dramatic declaration, but when finally theres a simple and straightforward explanation, it becomes so hard to believe. Yet he laughs it off once Wilbur said his last words to him, and it was, like some stories in the smp, ridiculous yet heartwarming.

The Dream SMP Updates twitter account is too trusted imo. They so often post either biased or blatantly wrong info and people just... believe it. Even when it's been debunked. It seems like it's a lot of people's primary source as well. I've had lore discussions with people saying stuff I know is false and their source is just that account. I'm sure whoever's running it is trying their best and I'm not disregarding that but I think posting a disclaimer every once in a while wouldn't hurt

okay im gonna go off a lil because of the post i reblogged earlier about what the wiki quoted the egg as saying to ranboo and touch again on something ive been thinking about basically since i joined the fandom

there should be like a community run recap thing like i come from hermitcraft where we have the recap, before the hermitcraft recap there was mindcrack in a nutshell, basically same thing; catches you up to speed with what the hell is going on

i joined dsmp back during the election, my ass thought it was half to the end of the world that id missed the whole like disc war and lmanburg starting to exist (oh how i fear for people joining now), and was highkey looking around for this servers recap (dudn exist even now) and not until later that i learned about the recap blogs on here and dsmp updates is like A Week Old in my mind, learned about it a month ago At Best

so ive been on and off thinking about a dsmp recap since i joined, by the community for the community, having to be run by like a Fuckton of people to catch livestreams or vods, to collect clips or the vods themselves so they dont vanish into the aether (twitch people without vods channels.... why are you the way you are), note down important story shit or just updates in general from creators, translate the egg or whatever other funky language stuff is going on that needs translating, and most importantly for this ask; not be bias and to cite its god damn sources

the biggest problem with a recap is that im p sure mindcrack in a nutshell was biweekly, hermitcraft recap is weekly and doesnt look at streams and meanwhile dsmp is moving so fast that in a weeks time info from the start of the week would be outdated and doing it in a video format would be... ambitious to say the least, youd almost have to make it a twice weekly newspaper or something
