So I started reading House of Open Wounds, by your sagely recommendation, and I think it's my new favourite book. The magic? the Magic? Okay but The Magic.

And the way gods work, and, and the cultures, and and and, The characters especially! Poor Jack, he just wants to help. Every line between him and his God had me howling. Prassel is my favourite but I'm biased. Honestly I have so many feelings about this book and not any of the words to explain them.

I have not finished the book yet, (im at the part where we find out about Masty's identity) but I am seriously enjoying it so far! I will definitely be taking a look at the other books on your list.

Ayyy I'm glad you like it! It is a stellar character study and I'm starting to learn that's a strong point for Adrian Tchaikovsky's. And the world building is definitely some of the most unique I've ever read.

I think Banders had to be my favorite character. All of the characters were complex and interesting, but I really loved her? Dichotomy? She's a rebel of her system and also a product of her environment. She has major blind spots to her privilege and station and also near all-inclusive compassion for people she deems are hers. I have known people like her in real life, and they were also uniquely military. It's so so interesting, the odd gaps people build to encompass people they like, and she has them in a very human way I've never seen a character showcase before.

Also, she is a thief and a scoundrel, and I love her.

Back to the Major Arcana featuring Haruka!

This was an interesting card to work on! I'd watched a video going a bit more in depth on color theory so I tried to work some of the things I learned into this piece!

I didn't want this post to be too long so I have some more design notes on this card's Patreon post. You can read those and download a High res version of this card for free! It was also available 2 days early for Patrons just a quick mention

Interpretations are below the cut:

In the pursuit of understanding the self, the Hermit has elected to remove themselves from their outside world. At this point in the Hermit's life, others' opinions and thoughts are too overpowering and make it difficult to decide what they truly want.

Whether this be metaphorical or literal, the occasional period of self-isolation can be very beneficial, especially if you've felt like you've been doing certain actions that aren't aligned with who you truly are. It's important to note that this isolation period should not last forever. The Hermit is aware that their solitude is not permanent and chooses to make the most of their time.

While alone, the Hermit can focus inward: their thoughts, their desires, and what they believe is right or wrong. Away from the public, the Hermit aims to define who they are. Their values, the direction they wish to take their life, things that only they can decide for themselves.

When the Hermit appears in a reading, they're urging you to consider your recent actions and whether they were what you truly wish you'd done. What pressures are causing you to act a certain way? Do you wish you'd done something differently?

Perhaps a period of withdrawal would be beneficial to finding the answers to these questions.

Reversed, we see a Hermit that's isolating for more harmful reasons. When faced with the outside world, it can sometimes be tempting to disappear into oneself. The unknown is scary and it's human nature to try and avoid it at all costs.

While there may be times when you simply aren't ready to step out of your comfort zone (as doing so can do more harm than good), a reversed Hermit in a reading suggests that maybe it's time to begin the transition back to the outside world. This can be done as gradually as you like, but try to make those decisions based on what feels most aligned to your inner self. Simply asking that part of you for guidance will oftentimes give you the answer you need.

The main theme of the reversed Hermit is someone who's acting in ways that just don't feel right. Whether due to fear or outside pressure or any other myriad of reasons, a reversed Hermit feels like they're not being authentically themselves. Even if they're not conscious of it, there's a nagging feeling in the back of their mind telling them something needs to change.

What actions can you take to feel more like yourself? How do you define yourself in the first place? Are there any voices around you (or within) that are leading you astray?

Haruka's arc in Yakuza 5 is such an interesting one and it's been stuck in my brain ever since I first played it.

For almost her entire section, Haruka's living her life for other people.

She feels pressured to become an idol in the first place because Kiryu informs her that the orphanage is struggling financially. She allows herself to be completely isolated from her family in the hope that she can create a better life for her siblings.

She becomes closer to Mirei and then feels obligated to help her surrogate mother figure relive the glory that was stolen from her. Even after Mirei dies, Haruka feels obligated to join an idol group with the girls that made her life hell during the Princess League.

Through the whole game, there's this theme of following your dreams and doing what you feel is necessary to achieve them, and then you have Haruka.

She insists being an idol is what she really wants, but the whole time it really doesn't seem that way at all. It seems like she's just being shuffled around any way the adults in her life see fit.

Until...

At the very end of the game, she sees Kiryu, the man that raised her for almost a decade of her life, her father, and she can't keep pretending.

She never wanted to be an idol. She never wanted to be so thoroughly separated from her family. She wants to go home.

And here we see the Hermit turn from a reversal to upright. Haruka's isolation from her home taught her that pushing away her desires to live for others is painful and depressing and the exact opposite of how she wants to live her life. She refuses to be a pawn in the Idol industry and in Mirei's own agenda (even if Haruka cared about her).

It's Haruka's turn to figure out what she dreams of and how she'll achieve those dreams.

IMO, it doesn't really matter what method you choose to access your trauma- schema based work is a little more closely aligned with neural-network processing etc. I feel like IFS is also neural network/schema based. Parts are just schemas that run based on certain triggers which equates with certain neurotransmitters getting activated etc etc.

Ultimately, the method matters less than the response. For me IFS works because I am more easily able to relate to these behaviors/schemas/patterns as parts.

"What if every conversation with our internal parts really is just invented whole-cloth and isn't necessarily pointing at anything real, even emotionally within us?"

I would say even if it's something you invent - it's still coming from inside your own pattern of thought, so it's worth questioning, knowing more about.

" Is the Self really some dualistic deeper state of being or is it just literally a description of how we tend to feel when we're safe and calm?"

It depends on what you mean by safe and calm. There's safe and calm watching Netflix, etc, or there's safe and calm being held by a loved one. The best description I have of Self, for me, is more of a an IS. Or a meditative flow state. Self just is. Wants nothing, needs nothing.

"Are the parts really revealing our internal neural processes or do we just make them up to explain our behaviour and thoughts, which all come from the same basic trains of thought in our brains?"

I would say that inventing a part would have to reveal something about our neural processes- we can't escape our own brains.

- I also want to address the body work. Let's say that as a little kid, you got told to shut up a lot by your parents. You might hold tension in your throat, because when people try to speak (or sing) when anxious (like about getting yelled at or dismissed), our vocal cords are less elastic, and it can cause raspiness etc. When asked, that part of a person might identify as a certain age the trauma happened, and therefore have likes/dislikes of their own etc. Whether that's made up or not matters less, because the true part is there's part of you that's scared to speak up in front of people because the learning part of your brain has already equated public speaking with shame, and throat tension might be the only symptom of that.

I realize my example got a bit convoluted, I apologize. TLDR, if it works, great, if not, move on, or keep the parts that work for you and leave the parts that don't. It sounds like you've got a good therapist, and flexibility is a good thing. -MsSpastica @ reddit

Simple Ways to Practice Magick Everyday

Say a small prayer or do a short meditation before you get out of bed in the morning.

Write down dreams or visions you had.

Stir your first cup of coffee or tea counterclockwise to banish negativity and bad luck or clockwise to bring positive energy.

Dance!! Dancing is an excellent way to rise the energy, and it helps with opening the sacral and solar plexus chakra and getting in touch with the inner child.

You know how the planet Jupiter is the defender of our solar system? How Jupiter pulls asteroids away from Earth and even take the hits itself? That’s the energy of this person. As soon as I pulled the cards, I got the feeling of comfort from a strong and stable energy. I must say, this person also has a comforting smile and as soon as you look at them, your nerves will instantly be soothed. They feel like they are standing beside me, hands in pockets, as they watch me write this. They could have a favorite cream cable knit sweater that they like to wear as soon as there’s a chill in the air. 

They are very patient and have the mentality of “it doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be done”. You could suffer from anxiety, but I feel this panicked and shaky energy coming from you. I don’t know if you used to be yelled at or punished for doing something wrong by a parent or partner, but it feels like you are terrified of doing anything around your forever person at first. And there are cards here that are telling me that you have been hurt in the past. It seems like this could be the first safe and healthy partner you’ve had. This could just be the first partner you’ve ever had and now you're 20/25+ years old and you don’t know what you’re doing, which brings out this anxiety towards this relationship. But your partner here holds a lot of patience and comfort for you! They really love you. Honestly, this is really fucking close to unconditional love (which is rare). It’s like they have told you this but you continuously don’t believe them, which does hurt them a little ngl. The Jupiter reference could be what this was for. God, pile 1, they love you. They are such a steady energy. They are also very stable in the physical and spiritual realms. They really just want a peaceful home life with you honestly; they like the simple things. I think a good personality reference would be the husband to the pregnant wife in Kiki’s Delivery Service. 

They really want me to drive home the message of forgiving yourself, pile 1. Sure, your actions or thoughts do hurt them sometimes, but they don’t really want that to be the focus. They want you to be aware that they do but in a way to help you heal. They aren’t your past partner, they aren’t going to react like your parent, they aren’t playing you just because you haven’t had a partner. It’s heartbreaking that you would dare to even compare them to others. Maybe this person hides a lot of their hurt not to upset you and this is a hurdle that they have to work through. It’s only really coming out towards the end so that’s why I want to say that. 

I think this message was to let you know how the beginning part of your relationship will be like. They just want to make you aware of it, maybe so you can comfort the insecurities you have so the beginning won’t be as difficult.

Before I pulled the cards, I heard six months to a year or eight weeks. I don’t like to do timing but that’s what I heard. So if that feels right to you, then take it. Or somewhere between a waning crescent and a waning gibbous moon.

Honestly, they are just happy to be here. I think they were ready to give up on love after so many failed attempts and heartbreak before you came along. And you honestly could’ve sworn off love too but you saw them and was like “I want that one.” This is the black cat, golden retriever pile. Raven and Beast Boy, Maleficent and Diaval, or Roger Rabbit and Jessica Rabbit. 

The vulnerability oracle strongly comes from your side. It does come from theirs but they admit that they were practically enchanted by you. “The idea of giving up on love was a stupid idea on their part, sorry your highness, that was my bad.” They just folded and they would happily fall under any love spell you send their way. They are obsessed with you, in the most healthy way possible. They are banging the table with their fist, credit card in hand. There’s an energy that you were in the same room with them and kept your eye on them because you were drawn to how “pathetic” they were. You couldn’t help yourself so you gave in.
