Since late June, when my family/family friends suffered 2 deaths in quick succession and then I had a lot of stress surrounding my birthday, I haven't been following my diet as well as I should
I still lost some weight last month, but I feel like I could have done better if I didn't do a lot of off-diet eating while dealing with travel, funerals, and what little bit of birthday celebration I could manage (I definitely had cake and cupcakes that week lol)
So I'm trying to crack down on myself a bit. Within reason
So, of course, here I am at 4 PM on day one of trying to be back on the diet, having sweets cravings. And I know it's just because I'm trying not to snack, that I want to snack.
I'm not starving. I had a nice hearty breakfast, including a coffee with sugar in it. I am not deprived. I don't even feel hungry
But. I wanna bake a batch of cookies. And then eat them. Why am I like this

Headcanon: Pizza isn’t the thing Raph eats the most of
It's been a head-canon of mine for the past few hours that 50% of Raph's calorie intake, despite the existence of pizza, comes from only one source: rice.
A few reasons for this.
One: Raph's size. 
Starting off with the obvious point, the bigger someone is, the more they gotta eat (not to mention how active he and his brothers are). But why rice specifically? Well, just look at his living situation...
Two: Price. 
Food is expensive. It certainly didn't help that Splinter had to raise his sons in the sewers. In the US, 1kg of rice costs about $4, one of the cheapest sources of grain (not to mention how much 1kg of rice actually is once cooked)...
Three: Convenience. 
Rice is simple to cook, and has a shelf life from months to years. It could be easily stocked up in their home with as few trips to the upper city as possible, lowering risk of both shortages and exposing themselves above... The only issue they would have to deal with is keeping the rice dry while stored (i mean they live in sewers of all places), but that fix is relatively simple. 
 So why the emphasis on Raph and not all the brothers?
Four: now we're diving into Raph's character. 
In Rise, not only is he the eldest, but also the leader of the group. He largely is responsible for setting a good example, and putting the needs of his brothers before his own... This sentiment would bleed over to their meals, especially when they get older and have the means to nicer food: like pizza. While Raph would be perfectly justified to take more than his brothers, it would harm his need to set a good example...  
 But of course, he needs to meet his calorie quota, so while taking an equal share in special meals with his brothers, he can make up the carbs he still needs with the simple, plentiful food at home that most don't bat an eye at: rice. Not to mention having so much of it during childhood would lead to Raph growing up with the taste for it, along with it being an easy meal (if he had to cook when Splinter couldn't and Mikey was too young to be the family cook yet).
... It's probably one of the most boring HC's ever, but I think there's some interesting details to unravel in such a mundane concept. I'm surprised no one talks much about how much larger Raph's diet is with how big he is in Rise, and the implications along-with that. (Plus the image of Raph downing a whole bucket of rice by himself is funny to me I should draw that sometime)

Health update
My eczema has recently cleared up when I quit fasting. Some cuts and dead skin on my hands, but my fingers and the backs of my hands are no longer dry! I can bend my fingers and my palms feel so smooth. All it did was to quit fasting.
Now I do get allergic reactions, especially to dogs and pollen. My younger dog likes to sleep on my bed and licks her paws. I know my room is covered in dander at this point. I do get itchy on my face, neck, and hands. But it's not horrible. This is a separate issue from my hormone imbalances due to stress and prolonged fasting.
I'll eventually go back to fasting during week 1 and 3 of my cycle, and reducing the fasting on week 2 and 4. I'm not necessarily going to eat lower carb on week 1 and 3, as long as I'm eating mostly anti-inflammatory it honestly shouldn't matter. In general eating gut and hormone friendly foods and cycling my fasts in a way that will promote weight loss and autophagy, but no hormonal imbalances. I love carbs so I wouldn't go low carb all the way. My body doesn't have a problem with complex carbs. It does with excess sugar and junk carbs, but not things like fruit, whole grains, dark chocolate, or starchy veggies. Going too strict with my diet will definitely backfire.
So I've been balancing my hormones, and I've been eating anti-inflammatory. Of course we want a balance in life, so I'm going to fast cycle, not go low carb, and treat myself here and there so I don't feel deprived. I shared a pizza slice with my mom today. I got some aged cheddar popcorn so I have something to eat before my therapy session. Some "inflammatory" foods here and there won't do any damage. As long as most of my diet is low in refined sugars, white breads, fats, oils and processed meats. I know eating anti-inflammatory helps my skin. Combined with gut and hormone support.
I've been eating more pumpkin seeds which are great for hormones.
I've been looking into ways to support gut health. I've been chewing slowly, drinking aloe juice, eating anti-inflammatory (the best thing you can do for your gut), and eating Greek yogurt for probiotics.
I wanted to support anti-microbial effects so I don't experience any recurring infections like h pylori and staph and strep. I also want to ensure I have enough stomach acid and digestive enzymes. I'm doing an h pylori breath test in a few days and I hope I get a negative result. H pylori is a problem because it reduces stomach acid levels, which prevents proper digestion and allows for more downstream infections to occur (in the small and large intestines) because stomach acid also acts as a sterilizer that kills foreign pathogens. Stomach acid is important and I want to ensure I killed off the h pylori and am producing enough acid and can prevent further infections from occurring in the future.
I also want to ensure I am producing enough digestive enzymes. I know I am tired of taking multiple supplements, but enzymes can be so helpful. I know I prefer food sources, but the foods that are most rich in enzymes are tropical fruit, which I don't like. I do have a digestive enzyme supplement. I've been taking it a month or so ago and took it again today with lunch. I'll ask my doctor about all this when I do my mineral scan later this month. I'll also ask about acid, h pylori, and aloe juice.
I'm so happy because I feel better. Just some minor gut support and fast cycling and I'll be in good hands. I'm also going t get the psychological and psychiatric support I need.

A lengthy update and thoughts
My doctor wanted me to increase my Cymbalta to hopefully lower my general anxiety and I feel pretty good about it. The Cymbalta helps with my fibromyalgia pains and has given me the ability to make art again. I haven't really felt like making anything in at least 6 years so it's a really positive change. I want to buy some stickers from etsy to add to my mixed media things. And beads for making bracelets and a new phone strap. I made a rainbow bead chain for my phone last summer and it's discolored and missing almost all the gummy bear charms.
Also I talked to my doctor about my adhd and she told me the practice has a limitation to how much Marijuana can be in your system when you get prescription stimulants. (Even though its totally legal here) Of course I'm way over they're cut off limit so I'm going back in a month for another pee test and hopefully a prescription to get my shit together.
So for the next month I have to avoid smoking which is going to be a big change, I've been smoking since I was 14. I pulled out my half gallon water bottle I used to flush my system when I finally completed my benzo taper. I need to focus on healthy foods with low fat and do my best to exercise and burn the thc in my cells that way. I know of some good detox herbs just not sure if they detox fat cells or just the liver and kidneys? Either way it wouldn't hurt to try my berry detox tea.
I'm looking at some glass food containers so I can prep some more things ahead of time. I'm hoping it helps me eat healthier snacks or at least more veggies than I am now. Portion containers for grains and dairy seem like a good idea too. I don't typically over eat unless it's high carbs but it could also help me see what a full serving of vegetables looks like and I really just want to include more whole fresh foods in my diet.
I keep day dreaming about growing food. Really just a few things and a ton of herbs. Out of the 9 herbs I planted 8 have sprouted I'm just waiting on the chives. I'm afraid I over watered and molded the seeds but I guess time will tell. I wish I could have chickens and beehives and really do some self sufficient things with my time and space.
I actually feel lost in day dreams of all sorts lately. All good things I feel are possible in time with enough work put in. I keep telling myself I can create the life I imagine and I really believe it. The only thing holding me back is this over cluttered, messy house. Hopefully a stimulant will help me tackle making my space useful again.
Most of my daydreams are about summer activities and taking a family trip to Tennessee or camping. Chris and I are planning a camping trip for just us and Loki. No kids so we might actually be able to relax. We're trying to go in April before it gets too hot. I've already started a packing list for it.
I'm afraid I fucked myself out of therapy. My therapist of 14 years no longer accepts my insurance and I couldn't change it before the cut off day, it wouldn't process. I have no interest in finding a new therapist either. So I'm going to buy a few mental health workbooks and some aromatherapy balms and just do my own healing and art therapy for now. Unless it turns out I have to have professional help, which would suck.
But life is pretty good take away crippling anxiety and adhd it would be really happy.

If switching from milk to soy milk too quickly can fuck you up years later then maybe animal products are a bit more important than you're making them out to be. If veganism is so healthy, it would be no problem to switch over instantly. I wasn't eating too little, the only time I lost weight was the first year when I was still figuring things out. Not eating candy is not having a bad relationship with food, I had a bad relationship with food when I struggled with sugar addiction and eating junk food, which I resolved before I even went vegan. I understand that most people think sugar is only harmful if you eat it to excess, but I can't limit myself when I'm craving sugar and not eating it in deserts (fruit, carbs, etc. are all fine though) is the only way to avoid cravings.
I obviously did not start escalating my iron intake or over using iron supplements until after I was anemic and I started getting desperate, why would you assume that I was just randomly drinking extra iron for no reason? Is it so hard to believe that I might have issues absorbing non heme iron, the type of iron that is known for being more difficult to absorb? You don't have to nitpick everything I say. I was vegan, I know it's easier to say that everyone who fails at veganism is doing something wrong than to acknowledge that it's not for everyone. It's also very easy to give into survivorship bias, to point to all the vegans who have been vegan for a long time and are healthy, as if they'd still be vegan if their health flagged.
Veganism is not a diet optimized for health. If you have to supplement anything because your diet is lacking, your diet is not based on health, your diet can't even fulfill your body's basic requirements. No, veganism is not a diet of the body, it was not designed based on research to find the optimal diet. Veganism is a diet of the mind. Many people go vegan because they care about animals, or the environment, they don't say that veganism is healthy because it's true, they say veganism is healthy because they want it to be true. I remember lying to people in the name of veganism. Motive overrides logic because it must, because if I was honest with myself, I would have stopped being vegan long before I quit.
I never said switching from dairy to soy quickly is unhealthy. I said you're supposed to replace one food product at a time. First dairy. Then eggs. Then beef. Then chicken and poultry. Then fish.
You're not supposed to change your diet completely to a bunch of new foods all at once. That's true regardless of what kind of change you're making. The reason you're supposed to do gradual change is to check for allergies and bad reactions to new foods.
You have a strange relationship with food. So I understand this anti-vegan rant is your special thing that you like to engage in. But lying about veganism is just a weird look, honestly. You claim there are no health benefits for anyone when that's easy to prove false. So next time you dump your anti-vegan rant in someone's inbox, be more strategic about your approach.
If you want to spend your time campaigning for people to eat meat, enjoy a future with no functioning antibiotics. Cheers.
