Dnd Magic Items: Demonomicon of Iggwilv
Type: Wondrous Item
Rarity: Artifact
Attunement: Yes
This treatise composed by Iggwilv the Archmage documents the Abyss's layers and inhabitants and is widely regarded as the most thorough and blasphemous tome of demonology in the multiverse. The tome recounts both the oldest and most current profanities of the Abyss and demons. Demons have attempted to censor the text and while sections have been ripped from the book's spine the general chapters remain ever revealing demonic secrets. Caged behind lines of script roils a secret piece of the Abyss itself which keeps the book up to date no matter how many pages are removed and it longs to be more than mere reference material.
Abyssal Lore: You can reference the Demonomicon whenever you make an Intelligence check to discern information about about demons or a Survival check related to the Abyss. When you do so you gain Advantage on the check.
Containment: The first 10 checks of the Demonomicon are blank. As a Magic action while holding the book you can target a Fiend that you can see that is trapped within the area of the spell Magic Circle. The Fiend must succeed on a DC20 Charisma saving throw with Disadvantage or become trapped within one of the Demonomicon's blank pages which fills with writing detailing the trapped creature's widely known name and depravities. Once used this action can't be used again until the next dawn.
When you finish a Long Rest if you and the Demonomicon are on the same Plane of Existence one trapped creature within the book can attempt to possess you. You make a DC20 Charisma saving throw. On a failed save you are possessed by the creature which controls you like a puppet. As a Magic action the possessing creature can release you and appear in the closest unoccupied space to you. On a successful save the Fiend can't try to possess you again for 7 days (but another Fiend trapped in the book can certainly try).
When the tome is discovered, it has 1d4 Fiends occupying its pages typically an assortment of demons.
Ensnarement: While carrying the book whenever you cast Magic Circle naming only Fiends or cast Planar Binding targeting a Fiend the spell is cast at level 9 regardless of what level spell slot you used if any. Additionally, the Fiend has Disadvantage on its saving throw against the spell.
Fiendish Scourging: While carrying the book when you make a damage roll for a spell you cast against a Fiend you use the maximum possible result instead of rolling.
Random Properties: The Artifacts has the following random properties:
2 minor beneficial properties
1 minor detrimental property
1 major detrimental property
Spells: The book has 8 charges and regains 1d8 expended charges daily at dawn. While holding the book you can take a Magic action to cast one of the spells (save DC 20) on the following table. Below indicates how many charges you must expend to cast the spell.
Magic Circle 1 charge
Magic Jar 3 charges
Planar Ally 3 charges
Planar Binding 2 charges
Plane Shift (to the Abyss only) 3 charges
Summon Fiend 3 Charges
Tasha's Hideous Laughter Free
Destroying the Artifact: To destroy the book 6 different Demon Lords must each tear out 1/6 of the book's pages. If this occurs the pages reappear after 24 hours. Before all those hours pass anyone, who opens the book's remaining binding is transported to a nascent layer of the Abyss that lies hidden within the book. At the heart of this deadly semi sentient domain lies a long-lost artifact Fraz-Urb'luu's Staff. If the Staff is dragged from the pocket plane the tome is reduced to a mundane and out of date copy of the Tome of Zyx the work that served as the foundation of the Demonomicon of Iggwilv. The Tome of Zyx can be destroyed like an ordinary book. Once the staff emerges the Demon Lord Fraz-Urb'luu knows instantly.

I am working on an updated ABOUT page for Graz'zt for when I swap blogs, and as part of that, I'm including a small section to (hopefully) easily explain the differences between demons and devils within the cosmology. Because I am obnoxious and can't quiet the little voice that goes "um, actually" when I see demons and devils being referred to interchangeably.
For player characters, alignment is descriptive rather than prescriptive. This is not the case for demons and devils (...sort of), where the difference between Lawful and Chaotic is what fundamentally separates them from one another.
A chaotic society is one in which the strong rule—might determines right.  In this societal structure, it is nearly impossible for an incompetent person to become leader because strength is the only virtue that matters, and if you are strong enough to rule, you are capable of killing those in your way.  Iggwilv’s excerpt from the Demonomicon speaks explicitly to this.
“As creatures of chaos incarnate, demons have no unified culture.  The only modicum of order that exists for a demon is the one imposed upon it by a more powerful demon—and the moment that a demon rises high enough to assert its authority on others is the very moment that rivals begin to subvert that authority.” — The Demonomicon of Iggwilv
Graz’zt is powerful enough to maintain three layers of the Abyss in his kingdom, and no one has yet been able to best him in cunning or strength.  Therefore, he leads.
On the other hand, in a lawful society, the laws determine order;  rules come first, the actual competence of the leader second. This is where we see a concern for traditions, proper forms being obeyed, and the idea of some kind of established legitimacy.
Not everyone may like it, but Asmodeus rules in Baator because the structure, rules, and traditions say so.  The Lord of Lies is King of the Hells because people believe it; they follow the rules, even if they don't like it.  His rivals may scheme and plot, but they cannot replace him just by defeating him in combat.  There are structures to be observed, and if the other powerful movers and shakers say that you are not in charge... you are not in charge.

So I was rewatching the "betraying your friends" ep from MOTH, and was wondering something...when Cataclysm offered power to Zed, what if he DID accept it? What would happen then?
I actually made a while AU about this on Discord so I'm happy to share it here!
I'm now calling it: BIRTH OF THE SECOND SUN In this timeline, Mirrin is killed by Mahann and Zed is humiliated by Mahann and Gienne. He does manage to snatch away the Demonomicon, but he is truly alone with no one to warn him or comfort him in any way. Without hesitation, he accepts Cataclysm's offer…
After accepting Cataclysm's gift for power, Zed becomes a sorcerer of Untempic and Faenic elements. He is now just as powerful as the guardian, but while the guardian has a balance on such energies, Zed does not. On top of that, the quick influx of power overwhelms him, forcing him to go crazy, but he doesn't become the next Anarchanist, he transcends it. He sees things beyond normal perception, witnesses events that may never happen, but always had, he decides to continue where his long deceased mother left off.
He teleports straight to Makkaro's house in a display of divine fury. Makkaro, realizing the power Zed has received, panics and flees to his castle, narrowly avoiding his death. He knows its only a matter of time before Zed finds him again. He summons forth the Snake Titan and prepares for battle. Both of them are connected in some way to Cataclysm and they both have similar goals, but while Makkaro wants to do it in the name of justice and revenge, Zed wants to do it to unify and prepare the Manasians for something that could spell the end of everything. Just as Makkaro has set up a few rudimentary defenses, Zed appears.
The battle is hard fought and the effects are felt across the world. The undead and vampires pose no threat to Zed and are instantaneously dealt with. The snake titan is the only edge Makkaro has over Zed as its body cannot be destroyed, nor can it even be penetrated by anything from Manas. Even the Guardian couldn't defeat it. So instead, Zed, being the little smarty-pants he is, uses his incredible power to create time magic out of thin air, and using it to reset Shee Khan into it's original form. It is now alive, containing its soul that was once trapped in the desert of Shee, and it is pissed off at Makkaro.
But Makkaro isn't a fool either. He wasn't sure if Shee Khan would be always willing to serve him, so he implanted magical runes within the body of Shee Khan to send it back to the desert if something were to go awry. The downside of this teleport is that it causes massive seismic and ecological damage to the ocean, creating chasms and sending tsunamis to the east and west. Now, its just Zed and Makkaro. Makkaro attempts to reason with Zed. He asks him what he wants, to which Zed responds, "To crush any opposition". Makkaro realizes that he has no choice now, but to fully submit himself to the demonic magic. In order to prevent this tyrant from rising, he must become what he was doomed to be. A Lich Anarchanist. After submitting to his dark power, the fight truly begins…
Raze, the Guardian, hasn't been able to be touched, because the magic that gets near her cell fizzles away to nothing. However, that doesn't stop the shockwaves from knocking the walls loose and allowing Raze to rescue Taurus. Upon reuniting and seeing Zed and Makkaro go at it like Dragonball characters, Raze intervenes. She realizes she can't kill either of them as Makkaro's lich form seems to be un-killable and Zed is using BS time magic. As she looks at the two fighting, she remembers the time she entered through the Lightmaster engines. She recognizes that these two, through their conflict have become a source of infinite power. They have become the sentient light.
While I'm still thinking about this, I'd like to say Raze also made Makkaro and Zed dream in the Second sun. In this dream, Zed and the guardian went on an adventure and ran into Detective Aetherward and Gienne on another case. While working together, Zed realizes that he just wanted a family and Makkaro and Gienne have talked about children. In this timeline, Makkaro and Gienne are safely together without threat from the family. And Zed's family isn't murdered, but just travels a lot and doesn't have as much time for him. Zed becomes adopted by Makkaro and Gienne and even becomes a big brother to their birth child. The Guardian watches over them as a close friend and even helps Zed reunite with his long lost family on occasion. But in the end, it's just a dream shared by two dying consciousnesses.

ok so basicalyyyy
(included voiceclaims too bc its fun)
S1 involves crypt (vc david bowie) and ophelia (vc undecided atm) - ophelias arc is really quick bc i need s1 to focus more on the main villains i think. anyway the protags get lost in the woods for some reason and ophelia offers to lead them back to town but actually shes luring them deeper into the forest to her cabin so she can murder them and feed them to crypt. crypt Was her pet when she 1st found them after her parents died, but as they both grew up it turns out theyre actually fully intelligent. they make her kill people to keep them fed along with verbally and mentally abusing her and sometimes they get physically abusive too, and they often threaten to kill her if she doesnt feed them. obviously living with this for years affects her sanity, she ends up enjoying mutilating ppl as a kind of way to survive and eventually becomes more of a sadist. so anyway its obvious from the moment the protags meet her that Somethings not right just based on how erratically she acts, and they kinda sus her out pretty quick. she panics and attacks them but fails to kill them, which crypt is angry about and forces her off to the side to kill them themself. crypt dies obviously, idk how yet, maybe lenarr does it with his powers idfk. obviously ophelia is Devastated, but also relieved secretly. it takes her awhile to get over crypts death but after she does she thanks the protags and fucks off to live in her cabin peacefully lol
S2 involves noodle (vc david cross) and grem (vc 2mello), who is actually one of the main villains but hes important here i prommy - SO THIS ONES A BIGGER ONE bc i have room to do so now that the plot and characters are mostly Established. so a bit of backstory required on this one since noodle is a pre-established side character. noodle has been working at the royal familys castle since he was around 15, a lot like most of the other castle staff. unfortunately hes the one whos given the most odd/shitty jobs just by sheer coincidence, but hes convinced its because tix hates him for some reason. this isnt exactly helped by tixs spoiled rich kid personality he had when he was younger and just his general shittiness as a person (intentional or otherwise), and also indie (being tixs advisor and technically noodles 2nd boss despite being younger than him) is naturally bossy and blunt which made it worse too. so noodle is Already fed up with tix constantly antagonizing him (indie he doesnt actually care about as much because hes close friends with her boyfriend), that combined with how absolutely Nothing his personal life is, he just kinda Has it one day and decides hes going to do something awful to tix. so for context, grem is tixs ex, noodle knows he exists but doesnt actually Know him. he steals tixs old demonomicon from when they were still together and summons grem using his own blood. grem would Never miss an opportunity to torment tix at this point in the show bc he Also hates him. grem offers noodle a contract and he accepts without reading too much into it. grem basically implants a living embodiment of pure demon magic into noodles open wound (thats how he gets his snake tattoo btw) and it gives him magical powers Permanently. since noodle is my boyfailure hes very bad at using them but eventually Does get the hang of it, and plans to destroy tixs home and anyone that tries to stop him from doing so. NOW. ANOTHER bit of context. noodle was tixs go to babysitter for tiabi (tixs daughter) and noodle genuinely likes and cares for her very much. that being said, tiabi basically has to console this grown ass man whos having a major power trip rn bc shes the only one he wouldnt Ever harm in any way. this is undecided but im thinking maybe grem gets frustrated and maybe posesses noodle or something similar. hence noodles redemption episode being titled "exorcism" but idrk
S3 involves eugene (vc dana snyder) - so after the events of s2 i figured itd be good to have a silly, only semi-serious villain lol. this one was fairly recently given a MAJORRRR revision, eugene is my bffs (@/killer12345blog) oc that he made as a joke but i got attached to him lol. anyway eugene is a master shapeshifter that takes on a bastardization of tixs form to frame him for a wide variety of terrible crimes in ordsr to ruin his reputation. the reason he does this is to get tix out of the pucture so he can replace him and take over his life. he was successful in "replacing" other ppl in the past so this time he goes for tix, who is technically a very important political figure (hes a prince). while most of eugenes more sinister stuff goes on behind the scenes without it being revealed that he was the one doing it the Whole time, he pretends to be an ally to the main protags, hes actually naturally charming and his personality makes him very likeable. what hes ACTUALLY doing is cozying up to tixs friends to try to make them prefer him while furthing the evidence that tix is responsible for all eugenes crimes he did. its actually presented in a way that makes the person watching Also suspect tix. so eventually zach and lenarr realize theres some differences in how eugenetix acts vs how tix Actually acts, and start to believe it wasnt actually tix doing it. eugene gets mad as hell and goes mask off villain mode when lenarr and zach dont choose him over tix, and by that point its obvious what eugene was doing the entire time. so he attacks the protags, and since hes using tixs species as a base for the forms hes taking atm that means they cant kill him as easily bc he would only be killed by the same things that can hurt tix. This part i havent Fully gotten to just yet but they do come up with a convoluted home alone ass plan to lure eugene into a trap and kill him to DEATH (me and art agreed. even tho eugene actually dies for real im still using him as a bg character bc itd be funny)
S4 involves moff (vc uhhh. idk. who tf voices spinel from su) SO THIS ONES GONNA BE SHORT. its underdeveloped and s4 has a Lot of important shit happening w the main characters so itll be hard to fit in. a lot like s1 lol. anyway moff is an aspiring writer and is heavily invested in fandom culture and stuff lol. hes unhappy with how the writing of the show is done and wants to change it (dumb as fuck 4th wall break i know but who gaf) obviously this freaks the other characters the fuck out and they think hes crazy. BUT moff is the proud owner of a magic journal or something that he can write something in and it happens. this ones more lighthearted too, he doesnt do anything toooo awful with it its just weird and the other characters hate it so they try to stop him. this is very very hard bc of moffs journal, but they Are successful and his journal gets set on fire to get rid of it forever lol

So, I love my D&D players very much, they put up with a lot of torment from me as a DM, but sometimes they give it back to me in absolute droves and prove that I am 100% justified in my evil-doings.
In our most recent session, I'm introducing some big plot threads (the fabric of reality got torn by one of my villains in a ritual gone wrong that was meant to create an interplanar portal, typical shenangians) and one of my campaign's significant NPCs is none other than the Baba Yaga.
She's appeared a few times throughout the campaign, offered deals that my party never took because they were never in a dire enough position to be able to justify it. Until now. The Dragonborn Rogue makes a deal with the Baba Yaga to save reality from falling apart, in exchange for a powerful artefact, known as the Demonomicon (a typical magical macguffin as it were.) The player immediately regrets it, once she finds out exactly what she agreed to.
At some point as a group, they're all talking and trying to decide how to get the Dragonborn Rogue out of this deal and owe Baba Yaga nothing. I shrug, and halfheartedly suggest "Maybe you could try to trick Baba Yaga?"
Except that's not what the Dragonborn Rogue player hears me say. She ends up hearing, "Try to drink Baba Yaga," which the rest of the table finds absolutely hilarious.
Our Wizard player, who is a fantastic artist, takes that and RUNS with it. Unbeknownst to me, their shenaniganary is encouraged by our Paladin player as well. The Bard and Tiefling Rogue are on the other side of the table, acting as decoys to distract me from their friends' mischief.
I spend the rest of the session introducing more plot threads, exploring more of what's to come, completely unaware of what's happening on that side of the table.
I don't think about the drinking Baba Yaga jokes. It does not occur to me even remotely. I'm too busy focusing on other things.
We get to the end of the session. I finally get the chance to breathe. I check our #art channel on our campaign's discord and discover this waiting for me:
Tumblr media
Baba. Yaga. Gamer. Girl. Bathwater.
Do you see what I endure? Do you see what am beseiged with as a result of a simple misheard phrase?? Treachery and tomfoolery of the highest order!!
I am both blessed and horrified by the talents of my dear wizard friend @mo0nbugs because they have used their powers for great evil, so it is only natural that I must collectively punish the party for their crimes against me and my sanity.
We players and game masters exist in a perpetual cycle of mutual torment, all for the glory of storytelling and each other's company. If I must endure Baba Yaga Bathwater, then they too must endure the consequences of its creation, even if it were done so in jest.

Demon lords, also known as Abyssal lords, were archfiends who gained great power and established a position of preeminence among demonkind. Over millennia, these demons had amassed tremendous power and authority over their domain.
Each demon lord had a unique appearance and set of abilities and ruled over at least one layer of the Abyss. Those that controlled several layers and rose higher in power gave themselves the title of demon prince. Both "demon lord" and "demon prince" were self-proclaimed titles by those who had gained enough power and influence. The demonic fiends were in an eternal struggle, edging and fighting for dominion over one another. Unlike the archdevils, the chaotic evil demon lords did not have a rigid hierarchy, though they appeared in greater numbers throughout the Blood War.
Demon lords waged eternal war with each other, often seeking ways to expand their holdings into other layers and at the same time defend their personal domains from rival lords and scheming underlings. Obox-ob was the first demon lord to hold the title of "Prince of Demons", a coveted status symbol, followed by Miska the Wolf-Spider, and then Demogorgon. Orcus and Graz'zt contested this title, while Obox-ob desired to regain it.
Most demon lords had secretive mortal cults who sought to elevate their lords to godhood through prayer and sacrifice.
Although obyriths were the oldest of the demonic races, and their lords among the most powerful, only a handful of obyrith lords survived the rebellion of the tanar'ri demons. Known obyrith demon lords included:
Dagon: Prince of the Darkened Depths, Dagon was a primeval leviathan of a demon lord whose presence brought a fear of the sea and all that lurked beneath the water. He was a maddeningly massive being, ancient and powerful even by obyrith standards, and yet also an isolationist that acted as an oracle for the tanar'ri from within the depths of the Shadowsea.
Dwiergus: Referred to as the Chrysalis Prince, Dwiergus was a house-sized soup of everchanging limbs that ruled The Fleshforges, an undulating, protoplasmic realm of hate and hunger. The eldritch, primordial demon lord was driven primarily by the desire to reshape all living things into demonic lifeforms, and implanted the overwhelming urge to remove a body part out of the irrational belief the Prince had tainted it.
Obox-ob: The original Prince of Demons, Obox-ob was said to be the first obyrith to rise from the primordial matter of the Abyss, an entropic demon lord of putrescence that could inject others with raw chaos stuff that consumed their bodies and souls. After being deposed and forced to retreat to the deep Abyssal realm of Zionyn, he was reduced to a patron of poison and spreader of entomophobia as the Prince of Vermin.
Pale Night: The so-called Mother of Demons that came to be known by the name Pale Night was an unknowable being of such awful shape that reality itself tried to hide her. To see the truth beyond the veil was to court death, her incorporeal form a harbinger of insanity and dreadful births. Seen as a mother figure by many in the Abyss, there was no knowing what horrors she was truly responsible for spawning.
Pazuzu: Prince of the Lower Aerial Kingdoms, Pazuzu declared all Abyssal skies as his, and few cared enough to fight him over such a claim. Though once an obyrith lord, he had somehow "evolved" into a kind of intermediate form between obyrith and tanar'ri, gaining a bond to evil creatures of the air in place of his once-maddening form. Upon the calling of his name thrice, he appeared to offer corruption disguised as aid.
The Queen of Chaos: Her actual name stricken from history, the self-styled Queen of Chaos led the obyriths to war against the rest of reality, specifically against the forces of law. Certainly a force of change, the Queen was behind the fall of Obox-Ob, and had killed, imprisoned, and weakened those obyriths that opposed her. She retreated to The Steaming Fen after her defeat and despite the hopes of a few obyriths, hadn't been seen since.
Ugudenk: Referred to as the Squirming King, Ugudenk was a worm-like obyrith that primarily dug through his Writhing Realm. Seemingly immortal, it was speculated he was himself an Abyssal layer, his maw a feeding tendril that sometimes reached across the multiverse to devour at apparent random. His presence brought a fear of that which burrowed, and the crippling thought he could burst from the ground at any time.
Demon Princes The most powerful of the demon lords, aside from the obyrith lords, were called demon princes. These were tanar'ri demons. Known tanar'ri demon princes were:
Demogorgon: The third Prince of Demons, he was a monstrous demon with a humanoid, scaly body, two mandrill-like heads, tentacles in place of arms, clawed feet, and a tail.
Orcus: The self-proclaimed Lord of the Undead, Orcus had the legs and head of a ram, a long tail, bat-like wings, and a humanoid body. He was the archenemy of Demogorgon and Graz'zt.
Graz'zt: Also known as the Dark Prince, Graz'zt was a guileful, cunning demon lord that appeared as a handsome, muscular humanoid with obsidian skin, six small horns on his head, pointed ears, and six fingers on each hand. He was the archenemy of Orcus and Demogorgon.
Baphomet: The Prince of Beasts looked similar to a gigantic minotaur with coarse black fur that covered his body. He was widely worshiped among minotaurs as well.
Yeenoghu: Similar in appearance to the gnolls who worshiped him, Yeenoghu, who was also called the Lord of Savagery, maintained a feud with Baphomet.
Juiblex: Juiblex, the Faceless Lord, was a monstrous, multi-colored ooze covered in red eyes. He was mainly concerned with causing destruction. Fraz-Urb'luu: The self-styled Prince of Deception was a mysterious, winged demon lord.
Kostchtchie: Kostchtchie was a demon lord who corrupted frost giants into worshiping him, and called himself the Prince of Wrath.
Malcanthet: The Queen of the Succubi and one of the more subtle demon princes.
Zuggtmoy: A demon princess whose powers and concerns primarily involved fungi.

what books would you recommend to read to best understand Grazzt?
Thanks for the question, Anon! If you are asking about canon published material, our pickings are dangerously slim; Graz'zt doesn't appear in the works of Greenwood, Salvatore, or Weis and Hickman (as far as I am aware). For that, you have to go all the way back to Gygax's Gord the Rogue novels, which he first published to market the OG Greyhawk campaign setting and then continued after leaving TSR. I have not read the Gord novels or short stories, and as far as I'm aware, Graz'zt's appearances are limited. I think it is possibly one book?
You can get general overviews of Graz'zt from these published supplements (I won't load you down with literally everything, but these are the most comprehensive sources):
Planes of Chaos - an AD&D 2E supplement that offers one of our earliest comprehensive glimpses into the Man, the Myth, the Menace.
Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss - this is a 3.5 supplement that remains one of the most detailed sources on demons in the entire game, although certain lore is no longer relevant. When this was published, succubi and incubi were abyssal fiends and chaotic evil; in 4E, it was decided that they were more appropriately lawful evil (which is true, I suppose), and so became devils rather than demons. This lore change is also where Graz'zt, as an archdevil and possibly the son of Asmodeus, comes from. His tendency to seduce and bargain is a bit antithetical to your garden variety chaotic evil demonic entity, and in changing the succubi/incubi, they reckoned they needed to address him (and his good friend, Malcanthet, the Queen of Succubi and fellow Demon Prince). So, Graz'zt and Malcenthet both became powerful archdevils who Fell and were corrupted by the Abyss.
The Book of Vile Darkness - this is a pretty infamous sourcebook, and it's… well, read the title, and you can pick up what it's about through context clues, I'm sure. TBoVD details his cult.
Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes (pg149, since I don't think the link will direct you to the page on this one) - this is we get his proper 5E stat block, as well as some fun lore bits about the kind of madness he can induce in people (sex addiction, substance abuse, extreme narcissism, etc.) and the environments he spends time in (I especially love the note about animals and low-int beasts in the area just going into extreme mating season behaviors? Horny and aggressive, just like him!)
The Demonomicon of Iggwilv (Dragon #360) - Dragon Magazine ran a series of articles on the Abyssal Lords to emulate Tasha's great work, and the piece on Graz'zt is, understandably, the single most detailed deep-dive to date.
If you are more interested in my literary influences, then that's a much bigger question! I'm happy to expand further if that's the case, but my biggest sources of inspiration are:
Not to be that guy, but... Paradise Lost, unfortunately, demands its spot at the top of this list. Pride, ambition, charm, and a fall from grace - corporate is asking you to find the difference between these pictures, but they are the same picture, etc.
Similarly, Euron Greyjoy. In Euron, we have a noble son with magic powers groomed to become something greater—until the greater power grooming him realized oh shit, this kid is way too evil to control. Shunned for being The Fucking Worst Ever, he doubles down and pursues his own, even more fucked up, magic, ultimately becoming a god-level abuser to everyone around him. Also, "Why did you cut out their tongues?" "Because I needed silence." has all the right vibes.
I feel like I might be bringing a little dash of Lord Henry from A Picture of Dorian Gray to the table? He is a master manipulator who thrives on influencing Dorian into a life of indulgence and moral corruption, and this is pretty much the exact means through which Graz'zt pursues souls. Win them over, break them down, build them up again, new and horrible.
... Griffith. I won't elaborate. :\
Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs. Simply the everything about him.
Last but never least, he isn't literary, but the G-Man from Half-Life is an ever-present influence in how I hope to portray him. Not so much as Luz, but when I am writing Graz'zt as Graz'zt, I want him to be kind of like that guy. I have a post about it here, actually.

Just to feed my brain worms on this- by any chance have you thought of an AU where Zed actually JOINS Makkaro? If so, what would happen? Would he still have tiny feelings towards the Guardian?
Hmm...an AU where Zed joins Makkaro...let me think...the goals of each character don't exactly line up. Zed wants the Guardian to be freed, Makkaro wants to take over the world for his idea of love. Doesn't quite work, so we'll go the route of sneaky covert ops!
Okay, here's what I've thought up (using my canon names so don't get confused):
Let's say Gienne trusts Zed enough to be willing to tell him her secret. That she's the wife of Makkaro and only wants to put things back to the way they were. Just she and him living happily together.
Zed agrees to help, but at this stage, they've probably also got Mirrin with them considering Gienne would need time to get used to them.
Gienne would probably blackmail Mirrin into helping considering he doesn't want anyone finding out he's in Scimitaria looking for the Guardian as it might stir conflict between the Sultans and the remaining Jarls of Fusfeimyol. And if they here the princess of Manas City was involved that brings in a large portion of Manasia too.
So Mirrin agrees if it means they have a plan to get in with Makkaro.
Gienne's plan is to go back to Makkaro after being "saved" by Zed, who will also bring him news that the Jarl of Senthine is in the Scourge Lands as well.
Makkaro takes this pretty well and decides to admit Zed under his wing s an apprentice of evil, but he's not fully trusting of him and decides to block off access to high profile information to add better internal security until Zed can be trusted. This includes Raze.
As Makkaro continues plotting, making the vampires, suffering from Guardian Blood poisoning, Zed and Gienne are recording any and all information and sending it back to Mirrin, who has teamed up with the Sultan of Hilts on the front lines attacking the Tower of Ordos.
Mirrin is then using that information to get an upper hand and actually helps the Sultan defeat the undead and capture Ordos AND the Demonomicon, but the fight between Mirrin and Mahann still happens, with both parties living as Mahann escapes.
Upon hearing of the loss, Makkaro's pain expands tenfold from pure stress and paranoia. He calls in a full retreat to his castle and declares that the only way this could've happened is if they have a spy in their midst.
He interrogates each of the vampires, including Mahann who says that perhaps it might be his new young apprentice who has been behind the scenes this whole time. Or maybe even his wife.
The mere mention of Gienne being a traitor causes Makkaro to snap and permanently scar the vampire's body. He then keeps him locked up without any food, water, or blood until Makkaro is satisfied.
However, Mahann's words still echo in his head. Makkaro confronts Zed about why he wants to join and what he's wanting to achieve.
Zed simply says that he believes in Makkaro's ideals and tries to make it sound like Makkaro is actually doing a good thing by uniting everyone under one mindset.
Makkaro is taken aback by how nonviolent Zed's take is on his conquest. Believing there isn't a bad bone in his body, Makkaro decides to grant a request for Zed as a reward for being so faithful. Zed asks to see Raze, because he's always wantd to meet such a powerfully divine figure.
Makkaro agrees on the condition that he not approach her. Zed agrees and is taken to Raze. Zed has to hide his horror and worry at the sight of Raze, but Makkaro also remarks that he's never seen her in such a disgusted state.
Just then, Makkaro feels Shee Khan awaken as the castle is being attacked! Makkaro and Zed leave, but not before Zed gives a hopeful glance to the Raze as if to say, "I'm coming back for you".
The attack is an air raid led by the Sultan of Hilts and on the backs of sandrakes. Shee Khan is batting the attackers out of the sky wit it's tail and nothing is getting passed or hitting the castle.
Gienne is furious with Mirrin who went ahead and told the Sultan where Makkaro was. It wasn't part of the arrangement and Makkaro could be captured, but from what Mirrin has gathered, Makkaro is beyond any saving.
Zed rushes in and tells Gienne where Raze is and that maybe she might know how to save Makkaro. Zed has to stick with Makkaro so it's up to Gienne to get Raze out.
Gienne finds Raze, but before she finds a way to break the lock, she begs the Guardian to save her husband. She knows that she has no right to beg for such things after what she has allowed to have happen to Raze, but all the same, she just wants peace.
Raze, reluctantly, agrees. Upon releasing Raze, she uses her magic to search for Makkaro's location, uses magic to teleport over to him and takes away his necromancy. The catalyst is gone. Zed sees her and falls to the floor in shock.
As Shee Khan falls, Raze then teleports outside as Taurus bursts through the castle and joins up with Raze. Together, they cast a spell simply called, "know divinity". A spell that would let them all know that the Guardian is here to declare an immediate ceasefire.
Raze looks around. She sees all the people desperately looking at her for answers on what they should do. All she can think of is the times where she never could get through to anyone. Why would now be any different? She tells all of them to begone and never speak of what has happened here.
Once they do, Raze is alone, floating above the castle, thinking of what to do, now that she's free. Eventually, Zed calls her from down below.
She descends and Zed gives her a big hug and starts crying. Raze, taken aback, had been thinking that Zed might've betrayed her, but seeing this has made her confused and shaken.
Zed explains that this was all to get her free and that he had no choice, to which Makkaro will overhear what had transpired and immediately turn on Gienne for tricking him so horribly.
Gienne protests that she had no choice. That it was the only way to see the man she loved again. Makkaro, still grieving the loss of his entire army and the remains of his best friend, collapses from a mix of raging emotion and newly nullified power.
Gienne rushes to her husband, but not before Zed says one last goodbye as Raze teleports away with Zed in tow.
What happens then...might spoil MotH 20 so I'll leave it alone, but it would pretty much end the same way, funny enough. On a side note, I definitely think Zed would put some underhanded magic in the creation of the Vampires. Perhaps a dormant explosive enchantment to kill them should the need arise.
(wow this ended up being long lol)

Dudes, why would I heed the King James Bible for anything? That guy wrote his own Demonomicon. Like he was royally paranoid. Ok fair, but it really doesn’t apply.
