last night in ffxi I was trying to get from windurst to bastok so I decided to take the ferry in mhaura to selbina. I was absolutely mesmerized by the ferry ride for a short few minutes (you can even fish on the boat!) before I got knocked out by a sea monk that spawned on the deck :')

Close. but feels off. the lighting closest to S1-2, the consoles have the wrong lighting at the bottom (and the angles feels too straight), the captain's chair is shorter*. Lighting, cameras, age, probably all combine to give this set an unreal feel.

BTW, turning a city map into a battlefield is something that happen frequently enough in FFXI. So seeing that we're probably (?) going to fight in Jeuno is not surprising to me.
The screenshots are from one of the FFXI starter cities: San d'Oria.
The name of the instance? Ahahaha.
Dynamis-San d'Oria. Think of it like a nightmare scenario where enemies have taken over the cities. :)))
I was ready for them to make us fight in Jeuno once they announced the FFXI raid in FFXIV.

A tiny primer on FFXI, pt 1
With 7.1 approaching next month and with it the Final Fantasy XI alliance raid, I wanted to put something together for FFXIV players that never played the previous FF MMO.
As long as this may end up being, I promise it's not actually going into a whole lot of detail. It's more so to give a general idea of the setting, the different races, and some plot details.
THE WORLD
Final Fantasy XI takes place in the world of Vana'diel, and primarily in what's known as the Middle Lands, composed of the two continents of Quon and Mindartia, and the two islands of Elshimo and Kuzotz. Later expansions feature the lands of Aradjiah to the east, and the western continent of Ulbuka. And there's... other places.
PLAYER CHARACTERS
According to legend, the Ancients tried to reach Paradise, but were rejected and their civilization destroyed. The Goddess Altana wept at the devastation, and five of her tears created the enlightened races. Disguested at her weakness, the God of Twilight, Promathia, cursed the five races by bringing out their darkest emotions and dooming them to eternal conflict.
There are five playable races a player can choose. One interesting difference between FFXI and FFXIV is that the different races in FFXI also have different stats, representing their different characteristics. Fortunately, it doesn't limit what jobs they can be or how effective they are, as gear and gear-swapping can cover a lot of holes.
Minor edit: So FFXIV apparently has stat differences for different races and clans as well. Still, I feel pretty confident saying the FFXI stat differences were far more significant in comparison. If for no other reason than the effect on HP and MP pools. But again, gear, gear-swapping, and player skill make up for it.
Hume - your standard Human race. Hume's are well known for being extremely adaptable. Balanced stats.
Galka - a male-only race with large bodies and incredible strength. Similar to Roegadyn in some ways, but they also have large tails. They reproduce through reincarnation, and the newly reborn Galka has no memories of their past life. However, one Galka, called the Talekeeper, retains all the memories of every Galka's past lives for the last two centuries. Highest HP and VIT, lowest MP.
Mithra - similar to Miqo'te, but Mithra are a bit more cat-like. Alternatively, you could say they are like smaller, slimmer Hrothgar. Only female Mithra are playable (males do exist, but they are extremely rare, and only one ever shows up in-game). Highest DEX and AGI, tied with Galka for lowest CHR.
Elvaan - similar to Elezen, and I'd say specifically to Duskwight Elezen. Elvaan are tall, strong, (dark-skinned!) and super proud. Highest STR and MND, lowest DEX, AGI, and INT.
Tarutaru - similar to Lalafell, but even shorter and with dark brown noses. Tarutaru are intelligent and naturally gifted with magic, even at a young age. Highest INT and MP, lowest HP and STR.
THE MAIN NATIONS
Player characters can start in one of three nations: the Kingdom of San d'Oria, the Republic of Bastok, or the Federation of Windurst. Unlike FFXIV, each nation has its own quest storyline dealing with issues within that specific nation.
San d'Oria - a nation of Elvaan ruled by the d'Oraguille royal family. It's located in the northern part of Quon, and well known for its knights. (If you thought Ishgardians were pompous and arrogant, hoo boy, you've clearly never been to San d'Oria.) San d'Oria used to be a really major power, but then they tried going to war against the other two nations. We'll just say it did not go well for them.
Bastok - a democratic nation located in the south of Quon. It was founded by Hume miners and grew into a nation of mining, crafting, and technology, and is where you find Cid. Galka later settled in Bastok after being forced from their homeland by Anticans. For various reasons, there's a lot of tension between Humes and Galka in the city.
Windurst - a nation of magic, located at the southern edge of Mindartia. It was founded by tribes of Tarutaru, and at one point conquered most of the Middle Lands. Mithra also live here, acting as hunters and a sort of independent military force. Windurst has a truce with the Yagudo, a bird-like race, but it's arguably not a favorable one.
Jeuno - located at a central point between Quon and Mindartia and bridging the two continents, the Grand Duchy of Jeuno is the central point of trade for the Middle Lands, and currently the only nation with control of airships. It has a massive amount of economic and political power, but also declared itself to be neutral. Gameplay-wise, Jeuno is a key spot for several different storylines, and is where players get their chocobo license, their airship pass, and is the central airship hub.

"You're kinda weird. You know that right?" "Hah, yes. A dear friend would often say so."
-------------------
Hey the Vana'diel raids are going to kill me.
-> Short context, my ff14 WoL is literally my ff11 character; lore wrangled through the 11 alt timeline of 'failing to beat Promathia' - but the emptyness wiggled a little bit to be The flood of Darkness of the 13th \o/ happening at the same time as the Contrememoria on a different continent, Thus Silvaire [The Warrior of Crystal] becoming an archfiend voidsent who claims San d'Oria as his domain for millennia+ even though the beast doesn't remember why. ((There's literally a 60page document that explains it and more, but also is hyper condensed info/skimming over things cause its too much lore. Been developing this fool since 2003/2004)) -> he eventually goes from side villain foil of the WoL, to actually being part of the team (and earning a WoL title) and post Dawntrail he's just trying to recover some pieces of himself with genuine friendships and a support network.
but yeah. Love Silvaire. Love Prishe. I'm emotionally compromised so fucking much and it's not even november yet.

Just some Sasavi tidbits...
Because I have absolute dragon brain rot right now.
Tumblr media
First and foremost, since Mihli's story originates in FFXI loreverse, I'll be delving into a little bit of that game's lore and history. I love that in both XI and XIV's universe there exists within each dragon the capacity for good and evil or light and darkness.
San d'Oria (one of XI's three starter city states) and Ishgard share a lot of similarities. San d'Oria has had a long and often violent history with dragons, a conflict between the Elvaan (Elezen) and the wyrms much the same as Ishgard's Dragonsong War. However, being a deeply religious nation at heart (again, much like Ishgard) a group of brave knights took the words of their goddess, Altana, to heart and sought to find the light in Dragons.
These knights did not seek to indiscriminately slay dragons like so many others before them but instead opted to forge spiritual pacts with the younger dragons so that they may both better develop along side each other. These knights became Vana'diel's first Dragoons.
Its important to note that these dragons would only typically form a connection with the righteous and not with those who merely sought power for their own sake. Even despite this bond being made pure in the start, they are capable just like any other of being corrupted by evil or darkness. While Mihli was never typically a member of San d'Orian society, nor a proper dragoon in her own right... she and Sasavi still share a very interesting history and further more, the spirit pact. Mihli found Sasavi moments after she'd been orphaned. It was the cat's unprejudiced care, concern, and love shown for the small dragon which forged the pact between them. And from that day forward Mihli has cared for her like she would her own child. From day day forward, Sasavi became Mihli's daughter.
The trauma of what occurred before Mihli arrived to swoop in and care for Sasavi has left the small dragon mostly non-verbal. Savi is a mute. Though she has her own ways of communicating, mostly through clicks, chirps, and churrs (like Miqo'te are capable of), or through her own body language. She is also capable of some doodles when supplied with the right mediums to work with.
All in all, Sasavi is definitely a good aligned and light bound dragon. A major part of their storyline for the better part of the last 20 IRL years has been geared towards educating other player characters about both the light and darkness dragons are capable of. That not all dragons are bad and that many are capable of a great deal of good and wonderful things, just like any Hyur, Miqo'te, Elezen... ect.
Since this is starting to get a little long... ask me about how the two pair in battle sometime if you're interested. I have some really interesting head canons about a dragon pact boosted dancer class. Think of it as a neat combination between dragoon and dancer. 's essentially Mihli's job/class. It's also why Mihli's dancer aesthetics are all dragon themed, such as her chakrams and other items being shaped to look like dragons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bonus Head Canon:
Since learning the origin of Dragons while adventuring with the WoL, Mihli quickly adopted 'my little star' into her booklet of endearment terms for Sasavi.
A lot of my information on XI's dragons is referenced from this video and also my own experiences playing FFXI! If the topic interests you, you should definitely give the video a watch!

BG3 Tav Introduction | Jamil D'Oria
I have... about twelve other things I should be doing, most of them grad school related but the tadpole speaks to me and I must answer so here's some information I've been scrounging together for my Tav
Tumblr media Tumblr media
commissions from jilljoycearts and molliartsie
Jamil (Alfonso Parsa) D'Oria, 41, with a noble background and member of the bard class, from the College of Lore
I've been developing him as an OC for about three years now and he is my beloved boy (even though he's about twice my age lmao)
Alignment: Neutral Good? with a bit of chaos sprinkled in there maybe
Gender/Sexuality: Gay man, he/him
Astrological Signs: Leo Sun, Pisces Moon, Pisces Rising
Romancing: Astarion. Of course.
I'm thinking he would be very close with Wyll prior to the game plotline or shortly into it just based on their similar upbringings
I do not know any DnD lore and I am currently not able to get a crash course in it so if anything I say about him contradicts it, don't tell me <3
Some fun facts about him!
Oldest of three siblings, has a younger brother Hakim and younger sister Eufemia
Part of a huge family on his mother's side, the D'Oria are an ancient established family with many many family members
He doesn't get along with his mother and travels as much as possible to avoid going home and back to his duties as the oldest son, however at this point she's all but disowned him and focuses on Hakim instead
His instrument of choice is a guitar gifted to him by his favorite aunt when he was a teenager that he would protect over his own life
Trained in sword-fighting as a teenager/young adult with his uncle, a world-renowned swordsman
Makes his own clothes more often than not
Technically needs glasses especially when it comes to reading and seeing at night, but refuses to wear them
Has a very friendly disposition that most people might assume is learned from years of nobility events, but he's just genuinely kind
Is not great with any kind of magic on his own, but can be used as a channel for others' magic
However, he has almost supernatural luck, which tends to rub off on those he spends the most time with after a while
Anyway, here he is, hopefully this will soothe the tadpole for a bit until I can sit down to write fic for him and Astarion
Some more art of him under the cut!

Vals' adventures in Vana'diel
So. I've played every Final Fantasy game except XI. I've always been curious about it but heard it's not as user friendly as modern MMOs.
You lose exp when you die, you can't do stuff solo, etc. An XIV FC member recently told me they kind of made it more user friendly by adding trusts (npcs in game that you summon to party with and do stuff with in game) , the xp death penalty isn't as nasty etc.
Back on May 10 the game and it's expansions was on sale for $10 (this happens quite frequently through out the year) and I had been close to purchasing it in the past but this time I took the plunge.
I have to say the hardest part of FFXI so far was installing and setting up the damn game lol You have to have a PlayOnline account (anyone remember PlayOnline from the FFIX strategy guide days? LOL) It took me about an hour to install and set everything up. You literally need a guide to set the game up and get it going.....I had to use one.
Game straight up crashed my whole computer the first time I launched it (off to a great start eh?) but I finally got in and got going.
Now XI is a 20 year old game. You literally have to have a wiki pulled up while playing to do anything cause the game does not hold your hand. The quests give you the bare minimum info on where to go, what to do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Needless to say the music is fantastic. There are still people playing, granted some servers are smaller then others (there's apparently three larger servers that everyone went to. I chose a small server)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The story is slow going but it's starting to pick up and I heard it's great once you get into it (think getting past ARR in XIV lol)
I also wanted to give it a shot since the new alliance raid in Dawntrail is gonna be from FFXI.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So far I'm level 27 WHM. I started in Bastok. Last night I went to San d'Oria and Windurst, the other two starting nations (took about an hour on foot to travel to them both) Picked up the ability to get a support job. Haven't gotten my Chocobo yet even though the quest for that is level 20 (I have not been to Jeuno yet where the quest is)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The boats in game travel in real time (had to wait 6 mins for it to arrive then had a 13 minute boat ride to the other area) While you're on the boat enemies can board the boat and attack (monsters, pirates, etc)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Met Cid, met Gilgamesh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I'm enjoying it enough to want to continue past the free 14 days I got for signing up.

My WoL's chocobo is named Sandy cause uh
It's really dumb ok but hear me out
My WoL is called Wendy Barrock, which at the time of 1.1??? 1.2??? I forget when I made her, was a play on FF11 and two of its major cities, which I had started in at some point at the time (I have never started in the latter which the name will be gotten to)
Said cities are Windurst (known as Windy, so Wendy wow so smart) and Bastok (Barrock is... close enough, again, so smart), and the chocobo is named after San d'Oria (do you get it yet)
That's literally it I feel like I overexplained but there you go
(Also my WoL's given name is Waenbryda Bhirimanwyn, which was obviously made after the fact)
I've seen a couple of people share their WoL's chocobo's names so far, and they're all ready cute, so I'm gonna take advantage of my platform to ask:
What's your WoL's chocobo's name?
I'll start: mine is Edwin! Because he kinda looks like an Edwin.
Edited to Add (Because I didn't even think about this last night, lol): I have two alts that have unlocked chocobos! One of the alts is Patia Por'co from Exandria Unlimited: Calamity, so I named her chocobo Avalir after the flying city from that same series. The other alt is based on one of my D&D characters, and his chocobo is named Phalanges after one of the party's two horses (he is solely focused on eating fingers).

Hi! Thank you for the response. New Years was busy so I'm just now able to reply. I didn't know about the weapon type weakness or the fact that you could just level up more. So used to FFXIV where weapons dont really matter and level cap for events exist.
After a bit of research after logging in again I found I was on the quest "Journey to Bastok" on the San d'Oria mission tab, and that I was fighting the "BCNM Seeker and Dark Dragon" fight. The wiki says I can use trusts but from what I remember I wasn't allowed to.
Currently on Bahamut server but now that I'm so far out from when I last played (nearly a year ago) I might remake just to save the headache of trying to figure everything out again. Only level 27 so I think I can get back again quickly.
Hope you had a nice new year!!
Regarding differences between FFXIV and FFXI, it's quite different yes! Weapons and gear DO matter, but when you're starting out, having trusts to do most of the labor helps immensely, so that you don't really have to worry about gear til level 99. You can easily get gear as you level through the Records of Eminence Sparks Vendors. There's one in each of the 3 nations.
For that mission, hmmm, I do believe you could use trusts in that fight, yeah. How strange. The only thing I can think of, is if your trust timers were still going. There is a cool down after you summon them, so if you summoned them, released them, and then tried to summon them again shortly after, it wouldn't let you. Waiting for the cool down (shown to your right, above the little menu with your party member names and HP/MP when you're selecting a spell), or having more trusts to use and cycle through, could help. Otherwise, that may have been an unfortunate glitch. :/
27 is definitely easy to get back into, even if taking your time. The game doesn't even end when you reach 99. I hit 99 on my first job about 3 weeks after I started (I no-life'd it), and that was a year and a half ago. I'm still playing that job lmao, and I haven't gotten tired of it!
If you do plan on remaking, I'm on Asura! My wife, her cousin, and I would love to help you out, to either play together or help you get your bearings. We're higher level, but we do have alts and other jobs we can level together. I can also hook you up with a Gold World Pass if you delete your current character (it only works on the first character of the account), to get some rewards. Feel free to message me again if interested, be it in two days or two years! We're always gonna be playing XI lmao
