The Crown made Diana seem... awful and crazy.
Hello, to all you beautiful people!
This author hopes all is well with each of you! After two solid months of illness after illness, I am back for a new post. Slowly, I inch back into the habits and hobbies I enjoyed pre-illness. There are two things I want to discuss; I should really write out two different posts and include a story of the last time I spoke with my mother before she died when I was on the run back in the old days. But, this author would like to remind you of the ‘taking it slowly’ part.
Therefore, I will say this briefly before I move onto my main topic. Knowing now that Her Majesty the Queen had cancer the last few years of her life, yet Harry did NOTHING to take advantage of that time… well… let me just say. One day he will wake up, and it will be a miracle if the guilt from all his decisions doesn’t crush him whole.
With that, I now would like to discuss the fifth season of The Crown. I’ve watched all five seasons of The Crown, and I have never found the show to be insulting to the Monarch. If anything, I find the show makes it look like Her Majesty had a short stick and the people around her didn’t make it any easier. Diana especially. Before Diana, it was either her sister, her husband, or possibly even her heir.
The fifth season essentially suggests that Diana was too stupid and paranoid to listen to her brother when he called out the inconsistencies from Bashir. There is a literal scene where Diana calls Martin out on all of his inconsistences (re her brother’s appeals and begging her to not go through with it). She has him in the car and she tells him of how her brother had been keeping notes from all the conversations, that he was caught up in many a lie. And yet she was so paranoid, she couldn’t see the reason for the mania. (I’ve been there, not judging, but it is what it is).
The whole entire show makes it look like Peter Morgan is in love with Her Majesty, but everyone else is too selfish and inconsiderate to try and make things easier for the Queen. I’ve never been one of those who saw the show as a bad thing, as long as the person being portrayed was the Queen. But this fifth season explicitly left someone out, which I found odd.
REMEMBER, the show is utter fiction. My fellow AMERICANS, The Crown is a work of FICTION. It is loosly based on factual events, and that is being a bit too generous.
The show also highlighted the Romanovs, and it showed the introduction of Penny to Prince Philip's life. I do wish they'd not make the Queen seem so hysterical with the emotional side of their marriage. They either make her seem superficial, or like she is so good at looking the other way it hurts Prince Philip that she doesn't even try to catch a peek. Like Philip was so unfulfilled he needed the Queen to complete him. Puh-lease. Those two were each other's rock. And they did what they needed to make it work. None of our business how that happened, now is it?
If I were Netflix, and I had an ex-royal, especially the second son of Diana, Princess of Wales on the payroll, wouldn’t it make the most sense to remind people at every opportunity that I had the Spare on the payroll? I mean, the whole point is to remind people of the upcoming content, not the stuff they already put out, right?
So why is it that little Harry didn’t have more than a hand full of lines the whole fifth season, yet William is a breakout role? Diana’s character even says that “all the love the people have for me has transferred to William,” after the interview fight. It was horrific the way they portrayed Diana.
Diana came off as a manipulative woman who knew she was being used and used it to her advantage daily. Even when they cover the divorce, they have a scene where she’s asked to be silent post divorce. She tells the Mediator character essentially that her silence would cost eight figures and start with a three. She hangs out at a hospital and love bombs sick patients just to attract the attention of the Khan (who did surgery on her acupuncturist’s spouse). She uses her children to sow unrest and win favor with the Queen.
Even one scene shows William and the Queen having tea, and the Queen reminding William that he is a child and shouldn’t be worrying about his mother. Then, she eventually has William with her when Diana goes to give her a small warning about the interview coming out with Bashir. Every time you see how Diana used William as a pawn with the Queen. Like she knew the Queen would see her using him, feel empathy for him, and show her favor. And it worked. It legit worked. If this is who Netflix is painting the Diana, Princess of Netflix to be, how can Harry even look himself in the eyes in the morning? I suppose with a LOT of exterior assistance.
And that reward is a threat, btw. I imagine that will be his official straw. Either that or King Charles III has already offered him a deal, and this is his way out. I.E. Old poppa will take me back now if I get rid of her… Harry was/is an addict. He needs frequent dopamine releases to stay interested. She is running out of interesting things, I am almost sure.
If Charles is waiting for the book re the titles, he shouldn’t. I keep checking often to see any changes, and there have been multiple updates to different biographies. Yet the succession withholds all titles for both of the kids. It says a lot. But then again, does it?
The Prince of Wales website still has Charles and Camilla on it as the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall. Netflix managed to come across very fair regarding Camilla and Charles. I am telling you, it seemed quite literal and quite personal. Like Netflix was getting revenge. But who am I? It was like they were sticking it to them both. They know Americans won't fact check, and they essentially made Prince Harry's childhood irrelevant in one of their biggest shows. Then, they painted William as the kid who had to parent his parents. How they continue to work with Netflix... wow. Just wow.
IT’S BEEN TOO LONG! Writing again soon, sending love! #royals #thecrown #princeharry

Wait, why do the anxious princes look so much alike...???
I was watching season 5 of The Crown, and I love that they show the awkwardness and nervousness of Prince William in these simple gestures, very similar to the way that Prince Wilhelm’s anxiety is projected in season 2 of Young Royals, but I also love the contrast between the way that these two characters (because William may be a real person, but in The Crown he is precisely a fictional character) deal with the idea of being public figures from such a young age, of being in the public eye whilst going through all the awkwardness of growing up, and how they deal with the weight of their roles in the monarchy and all that comes with it, the media and peer scrutiny.
But in the case of Prince William, he has to deal with people talking about his mother and the scandals that follow her, whereas Prince Wilhelm IS the scandal.
Regardless, neither one is prepared for it, it must be really hard to be that young and go through so much whilst people are gawking at you.
I guess it caught my attention that William looks like a thirteen-year-old version of Wilhelm, and then I noticed everything else.

The Crown - Season 5, “Decommissioned”
With its operational price tag of about $18 million a year, and its need for expensive improvements—The Britannia seemed simply too lavish and impractical an expense for the public to keep footing. With a heavy heart, the queen agreed to decommission the yacht in 1997 after 43 years of use and over a million miles traveled. The archaic nature of the yacht and the monarchy itself was heavily critiqued and routinely mocked on British TV in the interim period before Diana’s death in August of 1997.
(Dame Edna’s generous televised offer to privately buy the yacht for the Royal Family was considered but ultimately declined. Rumor suggests she bought it in secret and stored her gowns there until her death in 2023.)

the crown s5 bringing back duck shoot (a theme that is so tied to george vi and elizabeth’s early reign) as they signify the end of the british empire with the loss of hong kong is actually one of the best score decisions they made all season!!
knowing that one of the key scores of the first and second seasons, where empire was still a core part of the monarchy, was brought back to show how everything had changed is so satisfying; labour’s in power after destroying the tories, britannia decommissioned, a divorced heir to the throne making the speech… just shows how far the show and the story has come since claire foy and matt smith in s1 and s2 and it’s almost nostalgic to hear after not hearing it for so long.
absolutely love this show (not the british tho, they acc don’t exist x)

Unlikely everyone, i feel like The Crown favoured Camilla in the narrative and showed Diana in a very bad lightning. She was, indeed, acting unstable. Camilla, however is showed in a loving light, the woman who lost everything for love. It was very tasteless. Even Charles was put in a more positive light than past seasons, although Josh O'Connor will remain always superior.

Although I only live seven stops from Westminster on the Jubilee Line, I’m lucky enough to have a garden, and spending time in it with my wife [Imelda Staunton, currently starring as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown] is one of the major pleasures in life.

NOTES ON TELEVISION P.2
in chicken pox isolation, despite a long distance from t.v. shows in general and a will to read/watch films, i did end up consuming a lot of television. so here we go - this is from the last week or so, dating between 27th november to 4th december 2022. there are spoilers below.
house of the dragon finale (repeat watch, hotstar)
i rewatched the entire season and was very satisfied with spending more time in the GRRM universe, though here i’ll talk only about the finale. for an ending, it’s a pretty standard and solid delivery that, on my first watch, really kept the tension building towards the latter half very well -- on my second watch, though i knew what Vhaghar was going to do, just the visual of her overhead was enough to make me tense again. couldn’t quite connect with rhaenyra and daemon as a unit this time, especially when he does what he does. it seems a little out of line - was it just for the sake of unpredictability? or was this a development of his characterization? i don’t know. i think one more extra thing i love about HoTD was the music, the world building and production/costuming...just absolutely excellent. it’s still not quite as lived in a world as game of thrones but it could reach there. i think they need to stop hurrying so much? GODDAMN EMAA D’ARCY IS SO HOT. i’m very happy to see non-binary folks on screen. cannot wait for season 2, i’m a bit obsessed with the GRRM universe. ugh.
the crown season 5 (netflix)
let’s be honest, this was a pretty shitty/average season. nobody except the actor playing diana was the least bit convincing - the camilla actor looked shockingly like her so really well done there. but the queen, the king, charles etc etc very average. i also found the narrative building/construction incredibly weak, loose and disconnected - what were the episodes moving towards? there was no direction to what i was watching and mostly, i skipped through the season only pausing to see diana. the season also seemed very pro charles-camilla, which was very odd and unsettling. definitely a waste of time, even someone as fucking brilliant as lesley manville seemed wasted in the show!!!! who cares to be honest, we could put this money into more interesting historical / period dramas now, really. awfully done.
interview with the vampire (downloaded)
well well well, what a sexy little romp this was. there are some incredibly compelling things about it - um, jacob fkn andersen for a start??? wow. also the beauty of being able to say a queer black man in a historical-supernatural setting, dealing with so many things, it was really fucking wonderful. sam reid is also incredible charismatic, would find myself wondering - ugh, why am i rooting so much for him??? the costuming was off the fucking charts. their child-sister was alright, improved later but not convinced by the actor tbh. i was also unconvinced by the lack of sexual intimacy/queer sex (hello???), it was always only ever suggested types, i thought the whole dubai set-up was too weirdly done, i didn’t find the actor playing Rashid/Armand very convincing or compelling (props for muslim representation but couldn’t we have picked another actor??) and the journalist also felt a little one note, not very COMPELLING.....especially for a show with so much promise!!!!!! music was lovely, the sexy vibes were almost perfect - but we could have seen more lore, more world building? idk. lots of fantastic queer, race and class politics!!! a mixed bag of being horny, happy and confused!!!
dead to me season 3 (netflix)
this one started out okay, a little too on the nose with the hit and runs and overlaps to be honest but now it’s really dragging itself. it’s also like too much put together without much thought? jen is pregnant, judy has cancer, they’re making all kinds of claims to the fbi and the police? it’s getting harder and harder to take this universe seriously. before all the orchestrated chaos that seems to have little impact on the viewer, i was actually laughing. the dialogues were great first half, despite the hit and run gag etc, and i was living for this amazing female best-friendship on screen (YOU ARE MY FUCKING HEART! is something i want to scream at my best friend one day too!!!! its such a great moment) - but ya halfway through it seems to lose its steam, purpose and earlier energy?? why does jen’s house start looking like an ad shoot??? why is the fbi made up of only one agent who lives in a motel?? it’s like the show wants to create a number of different rules for its universe - campy? dark comedy? telenovela-esque?- idk, something’s off this time round -- or maybe i’m projecting too much realism? let’s see, two episodes left now.
wednesday (netflix)
ah! wheuew! after hearing so much from my flatmate, being shown that incredible dance sequence and the praise from my cousin as well as constant tumblr trending, i watched this in the span of a day or so. shouldn’t be so proud of super fast consumption but this was really very good!!! nearly excellent!!!! the music is absolutely exceptional, i will be hearing jenna ortega’s cello solo in my head for a while. she’s also absolutely PHENONEMAL. i love her and enid’s friendship, i was crying at that hug bitches. other characters are also great, though not given a lot of time to develop/gather depth. do agree that the black characters felt very detached from their racial identites even as racial politics is part of the show??? it was a lil weird. gwendolyn christie is a gorgeous one, though she stood often in only one pose. was this deliberate? catherine zeta jones did not fully convince me - but the 1990s casting was too good. that bee friend of hers was ok ok, some of the twists were expected, some were wildcards which i enjoyed. i really enjoyed this so much, surprisingly - i don’t really see the CW ties that many critics have pointed out, the tone is very much its own/certain/great. jenna ortega holds the whole damn thing together so perfectly. i would contest that the CGI/production is sometimes a little off and the narrative is weak in places, even the dialogue falls short at moments...but damn it, i enjoyed it so much. now im going to go back to my typewriter too!!!!!!
