Chapter 1: The Wrench

Stella Rothschild frowned.  Her carefully plucked eyebrows sloping uncharacteristically low above her eyes, her soft features given a hard edge by the white light of her holographic display.  She set down her cup of tea, and read over the email again. 

Dear Ms Rothschild 

I am writing to confirm that I have received the package you ordered and it is ready to collect at your earliest convenience.  Please note that the specimen’s case will only maintain the required conditions for 36 hours, after which its condition will decline thus neither my colleagues or myself  will be liable after this point.

Stella was impeccably proud of her organisation and time keeping skills, she had everything surrounding this package planned down to the minute, and some idiot had gone and delivered it a whole week early.  This email was the proverbial wrench in her well-oiled machine. 

Nova, her current best friend, sometimes roommate and go-to gofer was supposed to be collecting the package and escorting it back to the lab, but she was outside the sector on another important task. It would be impossible for her to reach the package and return to the lab before the 36 hours expiry. As much as she hated the idea, Stella would need to find someone new for this particular escort. 

She closed the email from Dr Chater and wrote a few short messages to her most trustworthy contacts to ask if they knew anyone who was skilled, reliable, and could work well alone- she hesitated and then added ‘ruthless’ to the list of requirements; She needed someone as much like Nova as possible, and her friend could not be described as anything lesser. 

The first to reply, a Mr Dennison, gave a list of his top three mercenaries. None of the names Stella recognised, and just as she wondered how she could possibly choose the best amongst them in such a short time, another two replies arrived in her inbox. They only gave one name, and each their own glowing recommendations. The same name was one of Dennisons top three; Caleb Ortez. 

Dr Gretchen Orlovski described him as masterful, both efficient and effective, and noted that he went above and beyond her requests, without asking for additional pay (though she assured additional compensation was given). 

Mrs Yvonne Kaburnak described him as the same, also adding ‘certainly ruthless but compassionate when it counted’. Stella also thought it strange that Kaburnak also added that she was filing for divorce from her husband in the next sentence - she had never considered her relationship with Yvonne to be so informal. 

Nevertheless, it seemed she potentially had her man, and now a secure means of contacting him. She began her message;

Dear Mr Ortez 

Following strong endorsements from your previous employers, I request your skills for a simple yet very important task.

 I have a package to be collected from a colleague and escorted back to my lab. I will cover all travel arrangements and expenses and you will be paid extra for a job well done. Call for more information, should you be interested.

Office Wars

Pairings: fem!reader x Jaemin

Theme: Fluff, Mild Jealousy, playful arguments, light crack, humour, protective.

Gist: You were always at each others throats at work and everyone knew that and was used to that but maybe there was more than just the arguments on the surface.

"Ms. Y/l/n you're typing too loudly" Na Jaemin said with his infamous smirk plastered on his face.

A collective sigh was heard across the office. Your colleagues were all used to the usual banter that took place between you and Jaemin, easily being able to tune the noise that followed.

You however found it particularly difficult to avoid the banter when Jaemin picked at you for the most ridiculous of things.

"Oh I'm sorry Supervisor Na I didn't realise your hearing aid was on" You replied, the snark to your tone didn't go unnoticed as Jaemin scoffed but you couldn't be bothered to look away from your work.

"I don't need hearing aid to hear your keyboard being murdered, the poor thing has to recieve the brunt of your anger caused by Writer Kim"

You slammed your hands onto your table and angrily spun your swirling chair in the direction in which Na Jaemin sat.

Your anger doubled as you saw him proudly smirking from his position, knowing you just gave into his taunts but you couldn't care enough since he was the one that made the low blow.

"Don't you ever get tired idoling around and causing your co-workers headaches?" You said to the smug looking boy before getting on your feet and waking to the pantry.

Jaemin smiled as he watched you dissapeare behind the wall that separates the office and the pantry.

You made two cups of coffee, calming yourself before you walked out placing one on Jaemins table and carried the other to yours and got back to your work. At this point the office was slightly accustomed to your dynamics but it still baffled them. No one understood how the two of you worked, one minute you were at eachother throats the next second you were on the same team. And they didn't even try to understand, they just went along with it.

Like right now,

"You're going to be late for the briefing if you don't hurry your pretty little fingers up" you mocked, the cheeky grin plastered on your face clearly showed how amused you were by the fact that Na Jaemin had FORGOTTEN to prepare for today's briefing as your teams supervisors in this small publishing company.

The furiously typying man let go of his lip that was trapped between his teeth to grind them together, eyes wavering for a second to glare at you before focusing on his task at hand.

You cheerily walked away, a skip in your step as you reached the meeting room waiting for your supervisor and CEO to enter, happily chattering with your colleague Joy about the small queer owned business the two of you came across on instagram because of this month.

Soon the CEO stepped in and the room fell quite, Jaemin was still not on his seat but a minute later he walked in apologising for the delay.

A rather short and surprisingly sucessful briefing later you walked back to your desk to finish of what little work you had left before you streched, slightly pushing your chair away from your desk.

"Ready to go y/n?" Joy asked coming upto you and you grinned at her, nodding.

"Don't waste time then c'mon" you heard the annoying voice of Na Jaemin say from behind you and then saw the man in question walk past you. You glared holes into his back and Joy chuckled.

You and Joy continued to chater as you made your way to the restaurant your team always eats at, to find that your entire team was already sitting there.

"I ordered what you asked me to" Your colleague Suho said to Joy who thanked him.

You took your seat inbetween Crystal and Yangyang, which also happened to be directly opposite Jaemin.

"I ordered (insert dosh of your choice) for you" Jaemin told you and the two of your stared at eachother for a few seconds and then you smiled at him thanking him.

Everyone let out a breath they didn't know they were holding at that, expecting you to get mad at him for ordering for you without you asking him to.

The wait for the food to arrive was peaceful, except for the few snark remarks you and Jaemin exchanged but it wasn't something that people weren't used to.

Upon the arrival of your food your eyes lit up. Ever since you were a kid you loved to eat, in fact you were the biggest foodie in your family.

You excitedly picked up your chop sticks ready to dig in before a voice interrupted you.

"Your food isn't going anywhere slow down or you'll burn your tongue." Jaemin said nonchalantly and you ignored him poking out your tongue at him and immediately digging in for a big bite.

As soon as the food touched your tongue you're eyes widened at the sharp sensation caused by the heat immediately dropping the serving back onto your plate as you started to pant like a dog because of the heat.

Yangyang who was next to you noticed, placing a hand on your shoulder and picking up your glass of water with his other hand.

"Careful Y/n" he warend rather uselessly after the deed was done, bringing the cup of water to your lips so that you could wash down the heat with the cooling water.

You drank the water, hands reaching out the hold the cup on your own. Once the burning sensation cooled down, you turned to Yangyang offering him a smile while thanking him.

You're attention then turned to Jaemin who sat infront of you glaring at no one in particular, expecting him to be looking smug.

You shrugged at the change in attitude as you continued your mean, this time blowing on your food before you took a bite.

Not even fifteen minutes later you felt a kick on you shin and then looked up to see Jaemin leaving, you sighed rolled your eyes and finished the food on your plate as fast as you could before dashing out back to the office. No you didn't forget to pay, the meals were handeled by the company.

You reached the office only to find Jaemin sitting on his seat pouting angrily as he typed away. You chuckled, deciding to not indulge him as you walked back to your seat and got on with your work and ignored the way Jaemin looked at you even poutier than before.

Ignoring him was a bad choice since after that he got even more annoying, dropping more files on your desk for you to deal with, making random comments about your corrections, complaining about anything and everything and you just ignored the fussy manchild with an eye roll.

"Y/n we have to go for the mandatory company diner now." Joy said to you and you looked out the window at the end of the office to see the sky becoming a dark orange hue, it was late evening.

"I still have so much to do" you whined, letting your head fall onto your desk with a thud and Joy winced, not knowing what to say.

"Stop whining y/n and just come back and get it done. I have work to do to so I can walk with you back to the office after dinner." Jaemin said walking upto your desk.

You lifted your head sligtly to look at the tall male who was looking at you, waiting for a reply to his question and you sighed head falling between your arms again.

"We have to leave now we don't have forever y/n make a choice" Jaemin said impatiently tapping his foot on the floor.

"Okay let's go!" You said suddenly jumping up and marching towards the exit. Jaemin chuckled and Joy looked at you as if you had grown two heads but then the two of them immediately followed behind you.

The company diner was uneventful. Mr. Choi on of your clients was making what he though to be flirtatious eyes at you again but you only saw it as creepy. But you were still able to enjoy you meal, sitting between Jaemin and Joy, happily chattering away.

After everyone was done eating you knew you couldn't stay to chat and you lifted you phone off the table checking the time and signalling Jaemin who nodded and the two of you bid your goodbyes.

"I can walk you if you want y/n-shi" a rosy cheek and very drunk Mr.Choi said and you gagged.

"It's Ms.y/l/n to you Mr.Choi and there's no need I'm walking her there, making sure our employee feels safe by making sure you're not around them." Jaemin said, eyes glaring daggers and the now offended drunk man.

"You" Mr.Choi yelled pointing his finger and an unimpressed Jaemin "How dare you talk to me like that! Don't you know how important I am to this company" the angry drunk man yelled.

"Mr Choil please stay professional because it isn't that hard to find good writers, especially on to replace you." Your CEO spoke up and you had to hold back a chuckle at Mr.Chois flustered face as his mouth opened and closed not able to form any words.

"If that all we'll be taking out leave." Jaemin said grabbing onto you hand and bowing at your CEO who nodded and quickly dragged you away. You quickly bowed in respects to you CEO too before you were dragged away by Jaemin.

"I felt like punching him" Jaemin said on your walk to the office, hand still holding yours.

"Me too" you chuckled at the fuming male as you walked the rest of the way in silence, hand in hand.

You immediately rushed to you desk upon reaching your office and started typing away and Jaemin lazily strolled to his seat, doing whatever he had to do.

Half an hour later and all you had to do was send out two mails and save the document you were working on, so you let yourself relax alittle slumping back onto your chair. You peaked at what jaemin was doing and smiled. "That's a good score, must have been alot of WORK" you teased and Jaemin looked embarrassed at getting caught.

"I-i was bored okay" he said avoiding your gaze and you smiled.

"Okay"

You crossed one leg over the other, leaning over your desk to send the last two e-mails and save the document you were busy correcting.

Just as you finished with your work and sat up straight Jaemin spoke "You know when a person sits with crossed legs and their legs are pointing towards you that means they like you" he said pointing at your position and you looked down to see your leg was indeed pointing at him.

"That means you like me y/n." Jaemin said cheekily wiggling his eyebrows.

And you looked at him eyes screwed as if you were judging his entire existence, which you were "Jaemin" he hummed in reply still grining, "We're engaged it would be really weird if I didn't like you" You said and Jaemins grin grew even wider and you sighed chuckling at your happy fiance.

"Yea it would be weird" he said sliding his chair towards you, crashing into you slightly and you steadied him.

"Ahh your so cute my y/n" he said pulling you into his arms and plukering his his lips trying to kiss you but you leaned away from him just to annoy him.

"Don't avoid my kisses" he huffed pouting as he tried again but you teased him again avoiding him.

"Yah! You brat give me a kiss!" he yelled and you chuckled turning you head to give him a small peck on his nose but he had other plans immediately moving his face and his lips met yours in a sweet kiss in which you felt yourself melting into. Kissing Jaemin was always calming and he always tasted sweet even thought he drank that disgustingly bitter coffee.

You slowly felt his hands snake behind your head pulling you closer lips moving in sync as he deepend the kiss, your breaths mingled as both of you felt lightweight. You got lost in eachother for a second before you slowly pulled away resting your forehead against his. He smiled at you eyes sparkling in the dim lit room.

"If someone walked in on us right now they'd have a heart attack" Jaemin joked and you chuckled. It was an unspoken rule between the two of you to keep your relationship a secret in the office and you did that by bickering. "We should tell them now though shouldn't we?" You asked and Jaemin pecked you cheek sitting up staright, "Yea and hand them the wedding invites" and you grinned, heat rushing to your cheeks, you never got used to the fact that you were to get married to Na Jaemin, your soulmate.

Needless to say when the two of you told everyone at the office the next day you were pretty sure some of them were this close to having a heart attack. But most of them Congratulated you as you stood hand in hand with Jaemin, grinning like an idiot.

New “Stranger Things” Comic Dives into Dr. Brenner’s Past

Dark Horse Comics has announced a new Stranger Things limited series comic book. Stranger Things: The Many Ghosts of Dr. Brenner hails from writer Brenden Fletcher, artist Mack Chater, colorist Rosh, and letterer Nate Piekos.

“The year is 1968. Dr. Martin Brenner, a disgraced American scientist, returns to the abandoned lab where he and his colleagues collected research for top-secret government projects. Scary Monsters ～Endless halloween night～Gameplay Tutorial

Overview

The event story will be split into 5 parts: Chapter 1 to 5. You will obtain these event-limited card as you progress through the stroy. Players can obtain event-limited cards in Chater 1: Sebek, Chapter 2: Ortho, Chapter 3: Floyd, Chapter 4: Jamil, Chapter 5: Ace.

There will be 5 parts for the halloween stamp mission and a deadline for every time stamp mission. Once the deadline is up, the game will switch to the next stamp mission regardless.

Gameplay

1. To unlock the event story, players must attend lessons (History, Flying, Alchemy). 2. Players will receive chocolate buckets and mirror shards as they progress through the story. 3. Players will receive rewards when they complete stamp missions. 4. Players can exchange event-limited cards with chocolate buckets.

Event-limited story

Event-limited story will be released when players attend lessons. The stories will be unlocked depending on the number of lessons attended.

Note: There will be a counter for regular lessons every chapter. The number of lessons attended will not be counted towards the next chapter.

Chocolate bucket and mirror shards

Players will receive chocolate buckets and mirror shards as they progress through the story. Players can obtain both items by clearing specific stories.

Halloween stamp mission

By challenging and clearing the stamp missions, players will receive rewards. Players will also receive 1 key if they complete all nine stamp missions.

Note: Players can also obtain chocolate buckets and other items if they complete specific missions. For more information on the missions, please click on each box.

Event-limited shop

Players can exchange items such as event-limited cards and other items in the event-limited shop using the chocolate buckets and mirror shards that were collected.

Note: Each event-limited costumes will be added to the shop after obtaining them by clearing the story.

EVER KILLED ANYONE BEFORE:  "Yikes, no. I know I cause trouble a lot, but I don’t go around killing people, dude.”

I can never remember where I---listen, i know with absolute certainty that the stupid multicolor quill was on the desk last I checked, but I’ve turned the whole hat upside down and it’s fuckin’ nowhere! The scene wasn't unlike the last time you had gone on a mission with the commandos, Steve hunched over a map, going over infiltration plans. The Commandos surrounded him, giving them their thoughts and making snarky jokes. You weren't quite paying attention to it, instead, you were glancing every so often at Bucky. You couldn't stop thinking about the letter sitting in your breast pocket. It was the fourth one Bucky had sent you in two weeks, each one managing to pierce your heart a little deeper.

The letters themselves weren't even romantic in nature, had one not known any better, they might have thought they were letters to a sibling, or maybe a friend. But something about it all, maybe it was your history, maybe it was the absurdity of sending someone in the same camp mail, or maybe it was the way he always signed them off as 'yours', made it all feel like much more than just friendly letters. You never replied to them. You could never convince yourself to. But you did start finding yourself wandering down to the mess during mail call, just to see if your name would be called that day.

You didn't really understand why he kept writing you letters, but honestly, you were too scared he would stop if you questioned it. After weeks of trying to convince yourself, and Bucky for that matter, that the two of you were nothing more than friends, the letters had begun to feel like your own little secret. Your own vice, clinging to the vain hope of something you couldn't, wouldn't let yourself have.

"What do you think we should do, Y/N?" Steve asked, looking at you expectantly.

"What?" You blinked pulled out of your trance by the sound of your name.

Steve raised an eyebrow, "To infiltrate the base, do you have any ideas?"

You blinked a few more times, biting your lip as you looked at the map. A flash of brilliance overtook you as you recalled your time in Paris. "There's a daily supply convoy that passes through this area. No doubt they supply this base too. It wouldn't take much to sneak onto a truck."

Bucky's gaze lingered on you for a moment before looking down at the map. "And what exactly do we plan on doin' when we get driven in? Just jump out guns blazing like last time?"

Steve shook his head, "This base is huge compared to Italy. It would be a suicide mission." He took a deep breath as he thought out some semblance of a plan. "Our best bet might be doing something similar to what we did in Austria."

The Commandos looked at him like he was nuts. "Steve." You said carefully. "Don't pretend you had a plan for Austria."

Steve rolled his eyes at your comment, opening his mouth to speak before Jones spoke up. "What about this large building here?" He pointed to a flyover picture of the base, "It looks like the energy silo that was in Austria. If we go in and blow that up, it might cripple them enough to swing things in our favor."

"That… might actually work." Falsworth responded, picking the photo up for a closer look. "It would also be easier to sneak into the base with a sapper group instead of all eight of us." He handed the photo off to Steve. "A team of three? Jaques of course, then two others."

"I'll go." You said. The sooner you got inside the base, the sooner you could figure out where the Bell had been taken. The men seemed to understand your eagerness, nodding amongst themselves.

"Then I'll go too," Bucky said almost immediately after, making your heart skip. It was as if he were waiting for you to volunteer. 

"No." You argued. At best he would be a distraction, a severe distraction. Ay worst… "You are an absolute danger with explosives and you know it." The last thing you needed was for him to lose a hand.

"I'm not that bad." He rolled his eyes. "And we damn well know you're gonna run off for that Bell the moment that building goes down. You need someone able to watch your six." You opened your mouth to protest, to tell him you didn't need to be protected, but he cut you off. "Don't even start. You're a Commando whether you admit it or not. And I'm not about to let one of our own run off alone in a war zone." To your frustration, the rest of the men grunted in agreement.

"Fine." You conceded. "We don't have time to argue about this. The convoy leaves Paris at noon, it's almost sundown now. Taking into account the convoy stopping to unload and reload supplies, it should be coming by any time now. If I remember the convoy maps right, it comes down the west road here." You traced out the road on the map with your finger. You hoped the Germans didn't think to change their supply routes since you were last in Paris.

Steve nodded, "It's settled then. Bucky, Jaques, and Y/N, get what you need to take the building down ASAP. The rest of us are on standby until then, got it?" The men voiced their agreement once more before bursting into action.

The convoy, luckily, was right on time, and it took no time at all for the three of them to slip onto the final truck in the line. You sat against a crate, concealing yourself from the trucks opening as it continued down the dirt road. You winced as the truck jostled you roughly back into the crates as it hit a bump. 

"What exactly is going on between you two," Dernier questioned in his typical french. "I thought you two worked your shit out weeks ago."

You frowned at him. To say you and Bucky worked things out was dubious at best. If anything it would have been more accurate to say you ungracefully shattered your own heart and swept it under a rug, only to pretend nothing had happened. You flirted far less now, but that really just served to hurt your heart more. "There's nothing going on between us." You shot back in french.

Dernier scoffed. "That's why you two keep looking at each other like kicked puppies when the other isn't looking."

"I still don't speak french." Bucky reminded, a tinge of frustration in his voice before you had a chance to respond to Dernier.

"It's nothing." You said quickly. "He's just trying to make sure this all goes smoothly." It wasn't exactly a lie, you convinced yourself, though the raise of Dernier's eyebrow told you you probably shouldn't have. "We should try to stick together until the building goes down."

"I'm sticking to you like glue, doll," Bucky said with a slight nod. "Don't worry abou-" Bucky went silent as the truck stopped. German voices could be heard from outside as the beam of a flashlight poked through the truck’s canvas cover. The three of you tensed as the beam swept across the truck bed, narrowly failing to illuminate you before disappearing. The three of you breathed a collective sigh of relief when the truck began to move again.

The second time it stopped, it had reached the base, you jumped out of the truck and slipping into a small alcove in the nearest building. Dernier pulled the flyover photo from his pocket, using it as a makeshift map. He pointed towards the energy silo and you both followed his lead, avoiding detection and planting bombs where he had ordered them to be placed. It had barely been half an hour by the time the building was properly rigged to explode. "Go." He whispered to you and Bucky as he fiddled with setting up the detonation device. "I'll meet up with the others as soon as I take the building down."

You nodded, patting Bucky on the arm. "Let's go." You said as you moved to leave, only for him not to follow.

"And leave Jaques?" He questioned, grabbing your arm to stop you. You rolled your eyes, of course. After this mission, you were making sure the men knew at least basic french. They couldn't rely on you and Jones constantly translating. 

"Stay or go, it's up to you. I'm going, Jaques said he can handle it." You insisted. Bucky was clearly wary about leaving a Commando on his own, but you really didn't have the time to try to convince him. Luckily, as you turned to go, Bucky reluctantly followed.

The bombs went off the moment the two of you were out of Dernier's sight, taking the building down with a deafening roar, and plunging the base into darkness in the process. Jones had been right, it was an energy silo, apparently, the entire base had been running off of the tesseracts stored power. You squinted through the darkness, the sun now well below the horizon, as you looked for some form of an administrative building through the growing chaos.

Shouts and screams and gunfire surrounded you making you suddenly very aware you were in the middle of a war. You were also suddenly very aware that you were completely alone. In the darkness and chaos, Bucky had disappeared from your side. Worry overtook you as you whipped around looking for him, even a fool would know he would never willingly leave your side in the middle of a mission. You bit your lip, considering your options. It would be easy to just continue your search, find Bucky later. He was fully capable of being on his own after all. Right?

You swore to yourself doubling back towards the now burning energy silo, but you failed to find any sign of Bucky. You shook your head, he was okay, he had to be. You weren't quite sure what you would do if he wasn't. You took off running searching for him, following your gut more than your brain.

You ran into the first building you saw, charging past hydra soldiers with reckless abandon. Something in your heart told you he would be there. Or maybe, it was just your mind trying to quell your growing panic. Either way, it didn't matter if it meant he was safe. He had to be safe.

You rounded the corner, turning down a hall of what appeared to be offices. Not that you noticed. You were far too focused on the Hydra officer holding Bucky at gunpoint. Bucky's eyes went wide when he caught sight of you over the officer's shoulder.

"Get on the fucking ground!" The officer yelled at him in German, gesturing to the floor. Bucky looked at the officer, carefully trying to piece together what was asked of him. The officer growled, stepping closer to Bucky, gun still trained on him. "Get on the ground before I put you on the ground."

When Bucky failed to comply with the order again, the officer aimed his pistol at Bucky's leg. You reacted before you could even think, you didn't even realize your gun was in your hand when you emptied the clip into the man's back and head. The officer fell to the floor in an instant, dropping his pistol in the process. The gun hit the ground with a clatter and a bang, firing a shot from the force of the impact.

Bucky hit the ground next, grasping his leg, a look of pain clear on his face. You nearly choked on your own breath in sheer panic when you rushed to his side. "What is with you and scaring the absolute hell out of me?" You questioned, inspecting his leg. He was shot, but it was a clean shot, straight through the muscle.

Bucky drew in a breath when you began applying pressure to the wound. "Scaring you?" He argued back, "I looked away for a second and you disappeared!" He winced again as you shifted your weight on his leg. "Damn that hurts."

"You got shot, Buck. It's supposed to hurt." You said dryly as the bleeding started to slow. Thank god. "And I didn't disappear, you did. I was running away from the explosion."

Bucky gave you a look, shaking his head. "No." He said simply as you broke out your med kit and began to bandage the injury.

"No?" You almost squeaked. "What the fuck is that supposed to mean?"

"You really think I would have willingly left you in the middle of a battlefield?" He shot back, sounding more than a little bit offended. You looked up at him as you fought the urge to argue back. He was right. You knew he was. You knew he would never have intentionally left your side. But god damn the fear of turning around and seeing him missing still shook you. 

"We got separated then." You compromised, not placing the blame on either of you, as you tied off the bandage. "Are you okay resting here? I need to at least try to find something on the bell." He would be too much to carry from room to room on your shoulder, but you still needed to look for the bell.

"Actually," Bucky said as he pulled some hastily folded paper from his pants pocket, "I might have already found it." You took the papers from him and looked them over. They were heavily cyphered documents, the only indication of what they might relate to being the picture of a bell stapled to them.

"Bucky you're amazing!" You squealed, throwing your arms around his neck. You jumped back when he let out a grunt of pain, remembering his injury. "Shit, Sorry!"

He grimaced at the pain. "I'm not one to complain about a dame throwing herself at me Doll. But try not to hit my leg next time alright?" He gave a weak but flirty smile, just enough that you felt your face warm. Instead of throwing yourself at him again, you wrapped his arm around your neck, fighting the urge to flirt back with him as you helped pull him to his feet. 

"Come on Sarge." You said lightly, trying to distract yourself from how close you both were. You hadn't been this close since that snowy night in December. "It's finally Steve's turn to yell at us for being reckless."

A chuckle rumbled through his chest, "Never thought I'd live to see the day."

Chapter Summary -  Tom worries when Danielle does not return and when she finally does, she declares something that could truly end them, will Tom be able to persuade her to stay?

That night, Tom did not sleep, any car that passed the street he was over to the window to see if it was Danielle returning, but she never returned home. Come eight o'clock the next morning, he was tired and frantic. Taking out his phone, unsure of where to even start, he dialled Emma's number.

"Hey Tom, what's up?"

"Is Danielle there?"

"No, she left Mac here though."

"Mac?"

"Yeah, last night she said it was a bit of an emergency and asked us to mind him, and that she would be coming to get him today."

"I will get him in a few minutes, did she say where she was going?"

"No, Tom what's going on." Tom didn't answer. "You had a fight, didn't you?"

"It was just a disagreement."

"How bad did you fuck up?"

"What makes you say it was me?"

"The way you're talking, because it is you calling me looking for her, not the other way around."

"I said something stupid and now she is gone."

Emma sighed. "Tom, she is just pissed off, she'll calm down when you grovel as much as you need to."

"She said it's done, we're done."

"How much of an asshole were you?"

"If you see her, please tell her to ring me," Tom begged.

"That much?"

"Please Em."

"Fine, I'll tell her," Emma stated. "Now come get the dog. If you have him, she'll have to go back to yours sooner or later."

Tom grabbed his keys, admitting that Emma was right and rushed out the door to get to hers and back as fast as possible. He was met with a cold look and a comment to sort himself out from Emma before getting Mac into his car. "I don't suppose you know where she's gone, do you fella?" Mac just looked at him expectantly, waiting for the car to start. "Come on, she might come home soon." He reversed out of Emma's driveway and drove back to his own part of the city.

Relief flooded him when he arrived back to his and he saw Danielle's car in the driveway; barely remembering to open the car door for Mac, he rushed up the steps and into the house. "Watch it." he had to come to a sudden halt when he almost collided with Danielle in the hallway as she made her way down the stairs with an arm full of clothes.

"Elle, please, we need to talk."

"I can't, I am late for a flight."

"Flight?"

"Yes, I need to get to the airport."

"Where are you going?"

"Home."

"You are home."

"I am going back to Ireland," she stated, not looking at him, putting the clothes into a waiting suitcase.

"You said you were going on Wednesday."

"I moved my flight forward." she looked at Mac, who was now standing in front of her panting. "I left him with Emma for a reason."

"I can mind him."

"No, he is my dog; and he is supposed to go to the kennels." She said firmly. "It's not fair to confuse him."

"He won't be." Tom argued, "We'll be fine together." Danielle bit her cheeks together. "Please Elle, look at me." she barely glanced at him. "I am so sorry."

"For what part?" She asked, her tone and demeanour telling him she wasn't overly interested in anything he had to say. "Look, Tom, we're too different, you seem to want a public all-access relationship, I want something more low-key, I want someone who actually wants to be with me, someone who doesn't say cruel and hurtful things because I want to be ready for whatever their life entails. Yes, I am colder in some respects, I get that, but the reason for which was because you were more outgoing and cheerful in public before, but you toned yourself down, I was only making sure that I was too, to make sure I did not embarrass you, to make sure no one I worked with could actually accuse me of being a snob, a name pusher or a bitch, but I guess I should have been more concerned with you thinking that, my bad." She swallowed back tears as she got her suitcase and made for the door, walking around Tom, who was also trying to control his emotions, she knelt down as Mac whined beside her. "Be a good boy okay? I'll arrange to come back to you as soon as I can." she kissed the top of Mac's head and scratched his ear before turning to Tom. "I have him booked in from today at the kennels, give them his food," she instructed before walking forward again, Tom's tear-filled eyes mirroring the heartbreak in her own. "I guess I don't need this anymore." She extended her hand, in it was the key Tom had given her to the house.

"No," Tom's voice broke, "No, Elle, please, you can't. I'm sorry."

"I heard you, sorry doesn't mean I am obliged to forgive you though Tom, it isn't a magic sponge that makes everything better. Take the key."

"No, this, this is yours, to here, our home."

"Your home, Tom," she shook her head. "Not mine, I am going home."

"For a few days, right, not forever?"

"No, I am coming back, but I am not sure I should come here. Bring my stuff to your mums when you get a chance, or leave them, I can collect them when suits."

"No, no, you're not doing this, we can work through it."

"What part Tom, the part where my feelings don't matter, the part where I am not something you concern yourself with over fame or the part where I am a 'brat' for feeling as I do?"

"I was just upset, I didn't mean it, I swear."

"What woman would stay to be called such a thing again Tom, what girl is stupid enough to allow herself to be spoken down to like that?"

"I am sorry, please." he stepped forward and touched her gently, his tears falling. "Please Elle, I love you. I want to be with you, have a life with you."

"No, you want the idea of that, I don't think you are not ready for it yet." She stated sadly. "I am not really in a place for that right now either I suppose, I cannot be with someone who cannot accept me as I am and I definitely cannot be with someone who cannot recognise that I am working on something to be a better partner for them. I was stupid to ever allow this, I thought I could be what you needed, what you wanted, but I can't."

"You are everything I wanted and needed and far more." Tom touched her face. "Please Elle, I am so sorry, I am." he leant down to try and kiss her, but she pulled back. "Elle."

"Here." she held out the key. "Take it." Her voice cracked as she tried to stay strong, but Tom refused to take the key, so she walked over to her suitcase again and left the key on the table inside the doorway. "Goodbye, Tom, thank you for everything," were her last words as she walked out the door and towards her car.

Heartbroken, Tom rushed to the door and pulled it open, Danielle had not made it down the steps before he jumped to the bottom. "No, I cannot let you go."

"You don't really get a choice."

"You cannot end us like this, we have one argument and you are fleeing, like everything doesn't matter, every 'I love you', every time we woke up together, every time we had sex, it all matters." Danielle swallowed and looked around to see if anyone could hear them. "I don't care about that anymore Elle, I don't care who knows."

"But that is the issue, you don't, I do." She snapped. "I am not ready, I was trying to be ready, I was trying to do it right, for you, and I apparently was all wrong."

"No," Tom shook his head. "No, you are so amazing for doing that, please, listen to me, you try do hard to be perfect for me but I never realised, you never said…"

"It doesn't matter."

"Yes it does, Elle, I love you."

"So? Saying that isn't going to make this better Tom, how can you mean it if you literally go off on me for not being happy with you fawning over your bitch of an ex who tried very hard I might add, to make me suffer at work and when I tell you how that feels to me, you accuse me of being the reason for it. Explain that to me, tell me how that is loving me. I love you and you know what I get? Shat on. I work hard, I try to make a name for myself, I try to be more than some mediocre girlfriend but I cannot compete with her and clearly, that actually matters."

"It doesn't."

"Then why make your entire interview with a prestigious magazine about her? And we both know that story about the t-shirt is bullshit, one, because her scrawny ass model friends would never have something that oversized as to fit a fully grown man and two because you had a love heart with her name on your shoulder. Or are you forgetting that little nugget? I ask for nothing, not to be talked about, but I guess that was too much." She turned and walked to the car, throwing her suitcase into the backseat before getting into the driver's seat.

"Why are you taking your car?"

"Because I have to."

"I will give you a lift."

"I don't have time now Tom, so thanks but no thanks." She reversed out of the driveway, being careful of the Jaguar as she did so.

Tom could only watch as she drove down the street and away from him, feeling himself become more and more upset as she did. He had hardly walked back inside the house, defeated and alone; when his phone rang; thinking it was Danielle, he answered it without looking at the number, "Elle?"

"No, sorry." Ben's voice came down the phone, "How are you?"

"I can't talk now."

"Hey, what's up, you sound upset?"

"Elle left."

"Didn't you say she was off to Ireland for a few days sometime around now?"

"Not that kind of left."

"Wait, left as in it's over, she is moving out?"

"Yes."

"Fuck, what happened?"

"I was an asshole and she left."

"You are going to have to go into more detail than that I'm afraid before I will pass judgement," Tom explained what happened with the GQ interview, Danielle's reaction and their subsequent argument. "Okay, so you were a slight bit of an asshole." Ben conceded. "Not an all-out one though."

"Tell that to Elle."

"Where is she now, Suffolk?"

"The airport probably. She said her flight was soon."

"She is going somewhere?"

"Back to Ireland."

"Permanently?"

"Jesus I hope not."

"Well get your case together, take the time apart to work on your plea and when she comes back, grovel," Ben suggested.

"Are you an actor or a solicitor?"

"I am a friend, trying to help you get your ass in gear and save your relationship."

"Can I ask you something?"

"I am scared to say yes," Ben seemed to be on the verge of wincing.

"The article, did you read it?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"I actually agree with Elle now that you told me what she thinks, it is one thing to not mention her, I know she has made it clear she is not ready for that yet, but to go on like that about Swift, I mean, poor Elle probably thinks she can't compete."

"There is no competition, I love Elle, I want to be with Elle."

"Then why say those things to the magazine?"

"I wanted to make it clear that it wasn't some stupid PR stunt."

"No, instead now it is a lovesick puppy act." Ben pointed out. "Danielle is just upset, hopefully with a little time to think about it, she will calm down."

"She is too stubborn."

"Jesus, I wonder who else can be accused of that?" Ben scoffed. "Look, if I was with Sophie and spoke about Olivia like that, very rightfully she would be pissed off. Think of it this way, if Elle went to Sophie and said she wished she was still with the doctor, that she was the one pregnant with his baby, how would you feel?" There was no response, nor was one needed. "Exactly, that is why she is so hurt now, and with the added extra of you calling her a brat, she is not too pleased."

"I never should have said that, I have been calling myself far worse since."

"I bet you have, but that doesn't help her get over her hurt. She needs time, she'll come round, she loves you, Tom, against her better judgement."

Tom just sighed and agreed, thinking not to argue. There was a knock on his door, "I better go, there's someone here." He walked over and opened it to see a flustered and frustrated Danielle on the other side. "Elle?"

"It's your fucking fault I missed my flight," She snapped, walking into the house. "With your talking, I was late and I forgot my passport."

"Will you make it now?" Tom asked, looking at her, his phone in his hand.

"My flight is in fifteen minutes, so I think it is safe to assume I will have to book another one." She walked upstairs to retrieve the document.

"Not telling you what to do but this may be the divine inspiration you were needing here," Ben shouted down the phone, having heard Tom and Danielle's interchange. Tom pressed the 'end call' button and took Benedict's advice, rushing up the stairs to see if Danielle would talk to him.

"Elle?" He walked into the bedroom to see Danielle crying, sitting on the bed. Immediately he rushed over to her, kneeling in front of her. "Elle."

"I want to hate you," she admitted through her tears.

"I know, it is easier to be mad if you don't love someone."

"I really do want to." She looked at him, "Why did you have to say those things?"

"I was an idiot, I am an idiot. I said so much more than she printed, I said I was happy now, I found things in life that brought me joy, I hoped she would print that, I wanted to say it to show you I was thinking of you but didn't want to reference you. I said about Mac, how he has made me happy, his carefree attitude and amazing story from street mongrel to spoiled brat pup made me think more about life, about living in the moment." Danielle smiled at that. "I wanted to tell her I found you but I wanted to keep you to myself a little longer, I wanted to not have to share you with the world yet, it isn't time yet, I still want it to be just you and me. I love you so much, Danielle, I don't want Taylor or anyone else, I want you, only you. I was an asshole, I made you feel like shit, like you are worthless, you are not worthless, you are everything to me." He cupped her face in his hands, she would not look at him. "I should not have dismissed your hurt, I should just have listened to you, telling you it was done wrong. I should not have said what I said." He tried to tilt her head up to look at him. "I love you."

"I don't want to love you right now." Tom felt his chest tighten at that. "I want to be angry at you." She inhaled deeply to settle herself. "I want to leave." Tom could not stop fresh tears from falling, Danielle leant forward slightly, leaning her forehead against Tom's. "Here, I'll forgive you too easily."

"Please, please forgive me." He begged, she said nothing. Braving the risk of her rejection, he gently pressed his lips to hers, kissing her chastely at first before kissing her again, then again, each one more passionate than the one before, before slowly coaxing her up the bed, not ceasing until she was lying with her head on the pillows, kissing her again, waiting for her to get it to go further. "Forgive me."

Danielle thought for a moment of everything Tom had said, of the article and of how it made her feel, but she also reminded herself of what they had done together, of how incredibly happy she usually was most of the time since being with Tom, and how the rest of the time she was generally upbeat too. She thought about what he said he had also mentioned to the reporter, of how happy he was in general with his life, she knew the woman could have focused on Taylor as no one had gotten an in-depth interview with him on the matter before that, so anything else he said could have been discarded for it. She had no idea if she should allow herself forgive him that easily, and as he patiently waited for her consent, by action or by word, she continued to think for a moment, knowing she would have to give her answer.

HONG KONG UPDATE 23 DEC 2019

This is a patch-up update. I know I’m slow, but I will get to present day eventually *sobs* 24 Dec 2019 report may take longer cos’ it was a chaotic max day with a hell load of info to sift through, and I have multiple real life deadlines to deal with. 0800: Several hundred queueing to get into trial of the 29 Sep 2019 “riot 95″. Hearing starts in an hour and a half. Prosecution asks for 12 more weeks to ‘collect evidence’. That will mean a total of half year since 1st hearing on 2nd Oct before trial starts.  Many gather for this hearing where almost nothing took place, about 1,000. The courts, now no longer independent and in cahoots with the CCP and the HK gov, are dragging trials out to ruin lives and also engaging in mass trials.

1300: Wanchai. “Stuck with you” sit-in protest during lunchtime at Revenue Tower. To protest disproportionate use of taxpayers’ money to fund police which brutalise the citizens (the very same taxpayers). Small no. of riot police stationed nearby but not intervening so far.

1300: Wanchai. Citizens at sit-in shout “Expel the Communists, liberate HK” and “2020, universal suffrage for LegCo”.

1600: Police presscon. “There’s no need for over-interpretation. Cockroaches are full of vitality, aren’t they?” says Tam Yu-hei, Chief Inspector HK Police PPRB in an RTHK interview when asked about how he sees frontline officers calling citizens the derogatory term. At first even management at HK Police said calling citizens “cockroaches is bad, but they couldn’t stop subordinates form doing so. So now they all shamelessly try to justify by saying “cockroach” could be a positive name. Ah so much integrity. “No need for over-interpretation” shoves the responsibility of the whole matter onto the citizens, it’s like burning someone’s house and then asking why they are upset. Gaslighting max.

1910: Central. Several thousands in Edinburgh Place for ‘SPARKing the free world afire’ rally to support Spark Alliance. The organisation aids arrested citizens and police and gov have been cracking down on it.

2159: Central. The rally goers sing Glory to Hong Kong.HK gov’s Justice Secretary Teresa Cheng (pro-Beijing) writes on her blog -- “Civil disobedience is illegal!” Citizen concerns groups respond: “This is what civil disobedience means....” “It is also illegal to make indiscriminate arrests and abuse powers!”

2009: Central. In Chater Garden, musicians gather for first day of their sector’s strike during the Christmas period, btwn 23 and 27 Dec 2019.

2040: Central. Heavy riot police presence on Chater Rd near both rallies, many stop and searches taking place.

2232: Central. Organisers at Edinburgh Place’s rally say 45,000 attended.

2236: Central. Chater Garden rally says they have been forbidden from playing “Glory to Hong Kong” by riot police who make the excuse that they fear crowds will block roads if the song is played.

Stories matter: the recurring narrative of radical Islamic terror in America (a statistical outlier) makes it nearly impossible to avoid equating "terrorist" with "jihadi suicide bomber" -- but the real domestic terror threat is white people, the Dominionists, ethno-nationalists, white separatists, white supremacists and sovereign citizens who target (or infiltrate) cops and blow up buildings. That's what makes Brian Wood's first Briggs Land collection so timely: a gripping story of far-right terror that is empathic but never sympathetic.

Grace Briggs wasn't born into the notorious, wealthy, heavily armed secessionist Briggs Family, but when she married the family's future patriarch at 15 and bore him three children, she became a Briggs. And when her husband went to jail for attempting to assassinate the president, she had to raise their sons together, while serving as Jim Briggs's conduit to his family, bringing him comfort items in jail and returning to the heavily fortified "village" with his orders.

But now Grace has learned that Jim Briggs is ready to turn state's evidence in order to get his freedom and access to cash from fracking licenses, she has staged a coup, taking over the family, risking assassination and ushering in a new era in the centuries-old smuggling clan, a time where women like her are recognized as first-class citizens instead of property for their husbands.

Jim Briggs isn't taking his wife's betrayal laying down. Within hours of her return from prison, the assassination attempts have begun, and she can't be sure it's not her own sons behind them.

Briggs Land builds on the empathic -- but not sympathetic -- portrayals of far-right separatists in Wood's seminal graphic novel DMZ. It's timely: the Trump era has been a moment of uneasy glory for white nationalists and their fellow travelers, who, having long craved the spotlight, aren't entirely sure what to do with it.

Briggs Land is also in development as an AMC TV series, further evidence of its zeitgeisty nature. Being a Brian Wood comic, it's also gripping as hell, a nonstop crime novel that involves rogue FBI agents, ruthless skinheads, closet racists and overt ones, doting parents who also happen to be unspeakable monsters.
