ahhahaha thank you so much! yes, absolutely! this is going to be long, because i have decided to do that scene in light of my life, pain of my ass. beware LONG BULLSHIT and spoilers below the cut!

ok to set the scene. i was TERRIFIED to write this part. because this is the climax, you know? we've had 150k words of build-up and emotional tension to this scene. while this has been a romantic story, this is the actual climax of the story. we've spent all this time in kurapika's head as he's dealt with his anxiety, his need for control, his fear of letting go. how he's changed as he's opened up his heart and his life to people outside. and finally he's actually working through all of his emotions and the progress he's made out loud, in front of everyone. and because he forgot about giving his speech until like five minutes before (sorry, kp), he is forced to speak from the heart.

For five agonizing seconds, Kurapika stood alone in the middle of a silent room. Above him, the string lights coalesced into a single shared point of soft white light that illuminated his space.

i so wish this could be adapted to, like, netflix or made into a movie. i put so much into this imagery. the play on light? the cinnamon topography? *chef's kiss* yes please netflix CALL ME.

Everyone in his life was staring at him expectantly, Pairo and Altair and Gon and Killua and Nanika and Alluka and Kalluto and his parents. And approximately a hundred other people on top of that, extended family on both sides, industry insiders, coworkers. All staring at him and waiting for him to say something amazing and powerful and deep about love and what did Kurapika know about love, anyway? He was a thirty-two year old trans man so terrified of his own emotions, so paralyzed by his fear of loss, that he did not figure out he was in love with his best friend until three weeks ago.

this is me screwing the knife in deeper for poor kurapika, sorry. this is so incredibly horrifying for a person with anxiety, as someone with anxiety. behold, the terrifying ordeal of being known.

Five seconds. Kurapika finally found Leorio standing near the back, leaning against the bar. He wondered if Leorio picked the same spot where they sat together the very first time they came here on purpose. Leorio sent him a wink and a thumbs-up.

the terrifying ordeal of being known and being so, so loved anyway. it was great to write in a way that showed leorio realized he was in love with kurapika first (indeed, realized that kurapika was in love with him before kurapika knew himself), because these little interactions shows so much how leorio is inviting and allowing kurapika to come to him on his own time. and supporting him the whole way, because they are friends!!!!

Breathe, Kurapika thought. Just breathe. It’s going to be okay.

this statement was not supposed to be a running theme/motif, but i'm super glad it did! i wrote it as a one-off line for melody, but then i was like, hang on, that's kinda good? every other time i write i'm like, hey, you could make a theme out of this!

“Um,” Kurapika started, his voice cracking. Christ, he sounded seventeen again. He cleared his throat.

my friends told me about how their voices changed and dropped on T. any trans person is stronger and more powerful than any us marine.

“For those of you who may not know, I’m Pairo’s brother. Kurapika. His older one, just to be clear.”

this is definitely something that has happened like a hundred times.

There was a smattering of chuckles around the room. He twisted to look at Pairo. “I’ve known Pairo since he was a toddler dragging a ragged, threadbare T-Rex plushie around behind him. I was there when he read his first chapter book on his own – Dino Hunter, of course – because he came bursting into my room at two o’clock in the morning to tell me about it.” Another round of laughter. “I was there when he got his first notebook, when he won his first writing contest, when he was published in his first magazine. I was the first person he told about liking boys instead of girls. I’ve watched him grow and learn and fall in love. And now Altair is part of our family, too.”

pairo and kurapika's lives as brothers were amazing. dino hunter is a reference to the book they both read in the manga that led to kurapika wanting to leave the kurta and explore the world.

i also thought that writing fit pairo well because it's a pretty accessible career for his eyes. he could type, he could enhance the screen and font when he needed, and he could do talk-to-type. one day i want to write a side-story of when pairo and altair met, because i have it perfectly formulated in my head and it's adorable.

Kurapika took a deep breath, tucking a lock of hair behind his ear. He confessed, “To be perfectly honest, I was scared when Pairo asked me to do this, because I’ve run out of things to teach him. He’s run on ahead of me in life. Settled down, moved in with his boyfriend – now husband, congratulations on that by the way – and gotten married, while I’m perpetually single and living alone in my loft apartment with an absolutely spoiled monster of a cat. Stop laughing, that wasn’t supposed to be a joke.”

emperor the cat was also not intended to be a character. i came up with him like, right before i started writing the chapter.

i think it was hard for kurapika to watch his brother fall in love and move on ahead in life. even if he was genuinely happy for them both. i had a conversation with a coworker a few months ago where we both talked about how we feel like we are "behind," even though we're both very accomplished. she felt like she was "behind" because i have a master's degree; i felt like i was "behind" because she was happily married and already had a child on the way (who is here and beautiful and perfect). and i imagine kurapika wondered if he was falling behind or missing something when he saw his brother succeed in love and business without really trying.

but there's no competition at all, of course. the world spins on, and we grow and change and find our place in our own time. there's no race.

The room quieted again. Kurapika went on, his eyes flicking over the crowd. He was starting to smile, too, now.

he's starting to realize this is okay, he's not going to mess up, he may actually have something worthwhile to say or share. he's getting more comfortable in all this.

“But I’m also a wedding planner – I know, ironic – and I’ve learned a lot about love from my clients. So if you’ll indulge me, I’d like to share some of those lessons now.”

No one from the back shouted at him to shut the fuck up, that he didn’t have a single clue what he was talking about, so he thought he was safe to carry on.

how funny would that have been??? like, it would have been fucked-up and humiliating, but in any other situation?? hilarious. just killua looking like that dude in mean girls being like HE DOESN'T EVEN GO HERE except it's like HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT LOVE IS.

He thought back to Light of My Life’s various couples, musing over their own rocky paths to the altar and the beautiful, fractured glimpses into their lives they gifted Kurapika and his team. What did they teach him? What did they teach his heart, that terrifying, terrified lump of meat frantically beating in his chest?

More than you think, his heart seemed to be telling him. Trust me; I will guide you through this. Trust me, trust me, trust me.

*"listen to your heart" plays in the background*

also like. trusting oneself and your perceptions and your feelings and your heart is so necessary. it's an important part of healing. and being honest with yourself and your feelings is part of a foundation for all healthy relationships, i think.

also i really like writing alliteratively. the play on words with "terrifying, terrified" was. inspired? terrifying, because kurapika for a long time feared his own heart and feelings, viewing them as a loss of control; and terrified, because his heart is afraid, too. and they are taking this leap together!

And Kurapika explained: “Love isn’t just found in eloquent professions or grand, romantic gestures. It’s supporting each other through your lowest, worst moments and coming out the other side stronger for it. It’s standing together, hand in hand, against the world. It’s in looking at someone simply existing in the world and seeing them as they are: good, beautiful, strong, intelligent, kind. It’s in your communication and your foundation and trusting that all good things will come together in time. It’s in the family that you build together. It’s in the work you each put in to get through the hard times. Together.”

me: yeah uh-huh jj you really did summarize the fic so far.

this is also where i started being sappy and thinking about love. friendly and romantic love. the love i've seen in my friends, the love i feel myself in my relationships.

There. That’s what his clients taught him. Menchi and Buhara; Morena and Theta; Pokkle and Ponzu; Knov and Morel; Knuckle and Shoot; Canary and Amane. But so many more people showed him what love was. He pictured Pairo and Altair on his couch, laughing at him and judging him and helping him put his own puzzle-piece heart together into something cohesive and beautiful. He smiled at his brothers and saw the way they were clutching each others hands, mouths beaming and eyes dewy.

they LOVE their brother so MUCH. their view of the outside looking in for the past year, watching kurapika fall in love, go soft, be happier than they've ever seen him.

He told them, “It’s in the way you can communicate in gestures and looks, and sometimes, without looking at all. It’s in banter and private jokes and finishing each other’s sentences. It’s in casual touches and... pouring their coffee before your own.”

my coffee is never as good as when my partner makes it. my honey-lemon tea is never as good as it is when my partner makes it. my jokes are never as funny as they are when my partner and i finish each other's sentences, build off of each other's quips. we can communicate across rooms with nothing but a look. these little signs of love are everywhere and expressed in so many tiny ways. these examples here are between people in romantic relationships, but these apply to platonic friendships as well.

His eyes swept the room and found Killua and Gon. Gon had his camera hefted onto one shoulder, and Killua stood behind him, arms around his waist and chin on his shoulder. “It’s on the first day you wake up and realize the way you look at the world has changed. The way you open your hands and your heart and give what you have, simply for the joy of being received.”

to love? transcendent. to be loved? incandescent. to love and know that it is valued and cherished and requited?

and this was a callback to killua talking about, of course, how he fell in love with gon like melting ice. like sinking into a bath. and this was also a quieter callback to how gon fell in love. because it wasn't just that he had/has so much love to give, but because for the first time in his life, he got to see it truly received. accepted.

Kurapika saw Killua’s breath catch and Gon’s hand flex over the fingers interlaced over his middle. Heedless of their surroundings and of the running camera, Gon twisted to kiss Killua on the mouth.

SMOOCHES ahahaha!

He turned his head back to Leorio. The man had not moved; indeed, he looked like he was nailed to the floor. His eyes were so intense as they watched him that Kurapika was almost surprised he had not yet burst into flame. Kurapika said, “It’s in the moment you see someone you’ve never met before, but you look at them and just know, to your core, that this is really going to be something.”

leorio realizing something is happening here. something huge is about to happen, is about to change. and he's trying so hard not to dare to hope it might be good. it might be everything.

A chorus of oohs went around the room. Even from this distance Kurapika saw the way Leorio’s face went red, and he ducked his chin, looking bashful and embarrassed.

leorio: holy shit holy shit holy SHIT IT'S HAPPENINGGGG

How was I such a fool before, Kurapika wondered, How was I so blind, so willfully ignorant and oblivious. How did it take me so long to realize you were talking about me. I’m sorry it took me so long to get here. I’m sorry I made you wait for so long.

this is important because it's not just kurapika realizing and accepting his feelings for leorio. this is kurapika's version of realizing that leorio feels the same for him. leorio is in love with him, too. and he's wondering how it was possible he was so scared and blind for so long. he fears he may have hurt leorio by holding off on this for so long, so he wants to be brave, take the leap, and see what they could be.

Kurapika did not want this man to wait another second. He did not want Leorio to spend another moment trapped in this limbo. So he confessed in the middle of a silent room in front of over a hundred people, “It's the first time you hear them laugh, and your entire world’s axis shifts beneath your feet.”

i remember the first time i met my partner. i remember the first time i looked at them and felt my world shift a little to the right. i remember falling in love and thinking that this one was unlike all the others. it was warm, golden, comforting.

Kurapika watched the confused frown on Leorio’s face when he heard that, amused by the almost puppyish tilt to his head as he considered it. He knew the moment Leorio realized what he meant when his eyes blew wide, amazed and awed and achingly soft. His lips parted.

gOD he is so CUTE. he's like oh hmm huh what does that mean

and then he remembers

i promise, he's not a huge dickwad!

and leorio laughing at gon's accidental gaffe and his sweet earnestness. and kurapika walking in. leorio realizing kurapika wanted to know him before they ever even met.

Kurapika made himself turn away from the arresting sight. “One of my favorite venues lately was the Roseview Ballroom downtown. Among its many beautiful, gaudy attractions are its murals depicting scenes from Shakespeare’s plays all across the ceiling. One is a famous quote from Twelfth Night: ‘journeys end in lovers meeting, every wise man’s son doth know.’ But the more I think about it, the less I agree.”

i'm such a WHORE for shakespeare, as any readers of mine will know. check out my modern college adaptation of much ado about nothing.

He turned to meet Pairo’s eyes again, repeating, “‘Journeys end in lovers meeting.’ But nothing is ending here. It’s just changing.”

life does not end when we start relationships! or when they end! or when we move, change jobs, graduate, go to school, drop out of school. happy endings in stories still aren't endings. the greatest constant in life is change.

“Because what I’ve learned in this job, Pairo and Altair, what nugget of wisdom I have to give you, is this. Love is looking at a world that can be terrifying, cold, capricious, and indifferent, and finding the person whose hand you want to hold through it all anyway. Because you want every laugh, every tear, every wrinkle, every spark of joy. Love is life’s greatest leap of faith, because you don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. But you know exactly who you want to spend all those tomorrows with.”

me finishing this: dammit i just wrote out my wedding vows.

Kurapika looked around the room again. At Gon and Killua; at Kalluto, Nanika, and Alluka; at his parents; at his brothers. At Leorio.

He concluded, “So you simply breathe. And you trust it will be okay.”

There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Kurapika dropped the microphone.

Okay SO "Changing Channels" is the 8th episode of the 5th season of Supernatural. I give this information bc it's important in looking at the context of the episode - now I've complained a LOT about how SPN is terrible at giving us canonical timeframes within the episodes (y'all i was SHOCKED to discover the first season is supposed to cover a little over a year's worth of time, I thought it was like... 4 or 5 months) so I can't say for sure how long before and after the other episodes happen in-universe around "Changing Channels" BUT

The episode before is "The Curious Case of Dean Winchester" where Dean and Bobby bet years of their lives in a game of poker with a witch. The episode after is "The Real Ghostbusters" where Sam and Dean end up at a fan convention for the in-universe Supernatural novels.

Why am I pointing this out? Because it's important, please, no audience participation, this is like a Brian David Gilbert panel.

[under a cut bc this got...... STUPID long. Who knew I still had this many opinions about SPN in 2020?]

Okay first of all I wanna talk about the cinnamon topography of this episode - I love the way the first 5 seasons are shot because you really feel the americana gothic horror aesthetic they were going for (I have a whole ‘nother rant about the first 5 seasons vs the last 10 but thats for another time). Everything is a little washed out and grey-toned, the camera angles generally serve to make Sam and Dean appear even taller than they actually are (larger than life - again, another post for another time), and there’s honestly a LOT of shots from the ‘monster’s’ perspective, which is really neat! I’ve said it before (on another blog - YES i have a dedicated spn rant blog, don’t @ me hdjfhfjfh) but the episode that really got me hooked on spn back in the day was the second one, about the w*ndigo. Yes, it’s a racist, culturally appropriating shitstorm, but the way its SHOT is fantastic. I’m honestly not a horror fan, but that episode could have easily relied on jumpscares and they DIDN’T and it was scary as all fucking hell and just - fuck okay getting off topic.

In “Changing Channels” we get that distinctive grey-washed tone in the beginning and the very end of the episode, but the middle? When they’re in TV Land? Everything is bright. Almost comically so, I mean - okay look at these two shots of Sam (apologies about the crappy phone pics, netflix won't let me screenshot)

And this is from a little later in the "TV" hospital

Ignoring that my phone is washing him out a lot in both pics, you can still see the warmer tones in the hospital shot as compared to the cold greyness in the police station one

Okay, now look at this picture

Dean inside the Impala, and those warm tones are back. Why? Because even though Sam and Dean believe that they’re back in the “real” world, they aren’t - so instead of the grey-washed shots that we’re used to, its the bright and warm shots that we see in “TV Land”! So the viewers pick up, even if its just subconsciously, that the boys aren’t out of the woods yet - everything is still too bright to be the in-universe reality we’ve come to expect from SPN by season 5

Which is also why i love this shift so much

These shots are literally SECONDS apart. The first is in "TV Land" and the second is in the "real" world. I have some red strip lights behind my bed, which are reflecting off my laptop screen - notice how much brighter they seem in the second picture? That’s because literally all of the warm colors have been drained out of the shot. As soon as Gabriel snaps them all back into “reality,” things get so much colder.

Okay, so the second thing I want to talk about is some of the very pointed dialogue choices within the “shows” the Winchesters take part in. Not between Sam and Dan and Gabriel, but from the, for lack of a better term, NPCs within the shows.

In the hospital, Dr. Piccolo tells Sam that he is “the finest cerebrovascular neurosurgeon I have ever met - and I have met plenty! So that girl died on your table; it wasn’t your fault. It wasn’t anybody’s fault. Sometimes people just die.” Standard cheesy soap opera dialogue - but lemme just swap some words here and -

“You are the finest hunter I have ever met - and I have met plenty! So that girl died on your hunt; it wasn’t your fault. It wasn’t anybody’s fault. Sometimes people just die.”

Or even -

“You are the finest hunter I have ever met - and I have met plenty! So Jessica and Mary died above you; it wasn’t your fault. It wasn’t anybody’s fault [but Azazel’s]. Sometimes people just die.”

Keeping in mind that the NPCs are basically Gabriel’s mouthpieces, its easy to see why so many people ship Sabriel. I’d actually love to see a fic that explores them talking about this moment in particular later on and the kind of gentle forgiveness that Gabriel can give Sam... getting off topic again.

In an abrupt about-face, the herpes commercial (much meme’d within the fandom) is straight up Gabriel shaming Sam. Because if you replace “genital herpes” with “demon blood” it’s.... dark. And very intentional.

So that’s what I did! (I combined all spoken lines to make the message easier to read, rather than splitting them up across 3 speakers as in the episode)

“I’ve drank demon blood. I tried to be responsible... did I try. But now, after being forcibly detoxed, I fight my addiction every day to reduce the chances of passing back into that toxic mindset. Ask your loved ones about a demon blood intervention today. [...] I am doing all I can to slightly lessen the chance of drinking demon blood again. And that’s a good thing.”

Like... the subtext throughout this episode sure is. Something.

Okay this is getting ridiculously long so I wanna wrap up by talking about The Best Scene In The Whole Goddamn Show

I’m talking, of course, about Gabriel’s Confession

“Max,” you might be saying, “there are so many better scenes out there, even within the first five seasons!” and to that i say, again, no audience participation, please. Also, you’re WRONG and here’s why!

Gabriel’s confession hits every goddamn emotional chord that the fandom begged for on this show - fear, rage, grief, pain, guilt, and even, yes, absolution.

Okay, here’s the scene again for those of you who don’t think about it at least once a week like me

Now this video is missing some of the conversation, but most of it is there, enough for you to see what I’m talking about. Gabriel up to this point has been, essentially, a nameless antagonist - this is the third episode he appeared in, and before this, we didn’t even know he was going by Loki. He was just referred to as ‘The Trickster’. But here, not only do we get a name (a real name at that), but we also get a glimpse of his backstory and a hell of a lot of character development in less than 5 minutes. I mean, Sam didn’t get this much character development throughout the entirety of season 1! There’s a good reason Gabriel has been a fan-favorite for a very long time, and I think a big part of it is this particular scene.

Because here, we get to see Gabriel being vulnerable. And we even see Dean show a little vulnerability, as he can empathize being the third party to explosive arguments between the two people who mean everything to him.

I mean... okay, it will never see the light of day, but I wrote a little bit of a Reverse ‘Verse fic (because I’m a sucker for Reverse ‘Verse) and this was the scene I started with. Not s1e1, not even the resurrection in s4e1, but this scene. Because this scene, more than any other, is critical to the way not only Gabriel’s (first) arc plays out, but also to how Sam and Dean conduct themselves for the rest of the season (and maybe a bit beyond, it’s been a hot minute since I watched s6 and later). Dean is angry but determined, he has a point to make, he is going to save Sammy and if he can’t do that, then he’s going to damn well die trying. But Sam... it’s after this episode that we start really seeing how bone-achingly tired Sam is. It’s after this conversation - where one of the other archangels, one of the few beings who can truly understand how powerful Michael and Lucifer are - says that there’s no other way around this that Sam seems to start inching towards giving in. Saying yes.

Sure, in the actual episode, he seems outraged by the idea, practically scoffs at it - “you want us to say yes to those sons of bitches?” - but it’s after this where Sam really seems run down.

I mean, look at the episodes before and after (HAH you thought I forgot about that first point I made at the very beginning of this post! I did, briefly, but I’ve circled back to it, thanks for being understanding). In “The Curious Case of Dean Winchester,” Sam behaves much as he did since the start of s4, which is to say, ‘annoying little know-it-all brother tossed into the middle of the apocalypse and just trying his best’ and it works well for the mad scramble for any scrap of information that’s happening in s4/early s5.

But in “The Real Ghostbusters” it’s different. This is another funny meta episode - except, while Sam and Dean are technically aware of the joke, they aren’t as amused by it as the audience is. And it’s not because of the ghosts. It’s because they’re just... done. Especially Sam. Dean has that nice little moment with the cosplayers at the end of the episode, but Sam... threatens to shoot Chuck. Sam ‘goes darkside’ more often than pretty much any other character in the show, but that moment is different. It’s a flat promise, not a threat. He’s not being an asshole, like he is after losing his soul. He’s just... done. And it’s obvious to see.

Gabriel’s confession is the turning point for Sam in s5, and it informs a lot of his behavior through the rest of s5, and possibly beyond! Like I said, I haven’t watched past s5 in a very long time, so I don’t feel confident enough to analyze that specific sort of character line, but I feel confident in saying that hearing one of the most powerful beings in the universe basically say “it doesn’t matter what you do - your destiny is unavoidable” and then he’s proven right (Sam says yes to Lucifer, and Dean eventually does say yes to Michael down the line!)... like, that’s really gotta fuck up your world view that was built on free will and throwing off the shackles of fate. Sam managed to avoid his ‘destiny’ in s2... but then it turns out that that wasn’t ever his destiny. Lucifer was his destiny.

Talk about an obscured view of the inner self.

this was GREAT ok

1. BOTH DEAN AND SAM GOT THEIR LITTLE MOMENTS. Dean with the iron and the human connections, Sam with the sulfur. Also, their difference to being in the past. Sam wanted to get the job done, he wasn't happy, but he impressed Samuel Colt with his hunting ability. He played up from the future, he was business first, and he wants out of hunting only when he's in control. Meanwhile Dean will take escape readily each time it's presented to him(maybe because he feels as though it's the only way out, and he doesn't know how to voluntarily leave?). He also 100% immerses himself into Not Hunting(first chance of escape), while Sam has slowly drifted into "I'm a hunter, no way out, this is my life now"

2. also kinda in the same vein, both of them had their moments, and both of them got to be a lil embarrassed. Not a lot, mostly a positive for both of them, but they got a lil bit of the other.

3. Cas having a support system for Whatever he did (please tell me what that is soon), being humans not connected to the conflict is so good. Especially Bobby, who just kinda...takes it and helps him and it's very nice. I wish we got a bit more of that, it would be a soldi way to keep Cas in story.

4. Dean is like. A grade A nerd. the man ONLY Communicates in forms of media. It's honestly absolutely adorable. Like boy he was SO Excited, he went all in, it was so cute and know, because of parasocial bonds, I was happy cuz he was happy, yk?

also it's nice having someone be allowed to be excited about something

5. also the cinnamon topography? was very nice this episode

6. that Colt thing at the end made me so happy, he was such a cool and complex old retired hunter man

alright here are my rwby8 thoughts now that i’ve had a few days to sit on ‘em!! spoilers for the entire volume under the cut

so if anyone happens to open this and is like “wow this is more words than i’ve seen you use ever” lol yup! it’s probably the most words i’ve written since high school lmao. feel free to read through if ya really want but this is mostly just my own way of organizing my thoughts for this kind of stuff rather than making a million different posts on random parts of it. this way if i want to look back in the future and say “haha wow can’t believe i thought THAT” it’s all in one easy location! i don’t expect anyone else to be reading all this shite lol

thoughts on the volume as a whole:

honestly i loved it!! there’s very little that i would’ve changed and most of that is nit-picking stuff. i’m very impressed that this volume was made in quarantine lmao. the animation in and of itself was STUNNING (shout out to the finale’s water animation...the aura break particle effects...the cinnamon topography of the amity scenes...all of the facial & body expressions...the whale disintegrating...)

i’d honestly say that it’s probably my second favorite volume?? volume 4 is still my beloved but v8 was so good. i’ll probably need to watch it through a few more times but god. i LOVED IT.

honorable mention cause idk where else to put it: some of the scores were breathtaking!!! i tend not to notice background music on my first watch unless it really sticks out to me and there were quite a few scenes where that happened in a good way this volume. the ones where cinder breaks into the atlas control room and the one at the end when atlas is flooding are probably my favs!!! also there was this one part where it was just screeching over ironwood and it worked really really well.

okay so now for individual characters. let’s start with ruby:

i would like to fund her therapy

very surprised that she didn’t “break” this volume! i was sort of expecting it to happen--between ironwood, the amity plan only kind of working, the hound, the virus, and the fact that she was separated from her usual support system (qrow, yang, and jaune), i was definitely expecting her to. i’m glad she didn’t though cause it’s gonna be so much harder when she actually does (probably when she finds out that cinder has the relics and penny’s dead...)

massive shout out to lindsay jones for managing to make squeaky-voiced ruby still sound like ruby even while going through a whole host of emotions we’ve never seen ruby go through before!

god. that scene where crescent rose fell into the drink and ruby scrambled after it. my heart dropped lmao.

also. this is likely because i’ve got an engineering degree (which came with a free stick up my butt when it comes to technology in media) but the line where they say “mass no longer matters” wrt her semblance??? WHAT??? bro splitting mass up into smaller chunks doesn’t change the actual mass of the material itself what is going on here 😭😭😭 (this isn’t a real criticism of any kind i just yelled WHAT after they said that line lmao)

weiss:

i have one single weiss criticism and its that, in the scene where she’s leaving whitley to go fight the hound, she says “we still need to work on your attitude” and for whatever reason, the voice track doesn’t sound like it was quite mixed right? like it sounds like she’s just standing there rolling her eyes but my girl is BOOKING it out of the room lmao

other than that: weiss you are PERFECT. she really spent this entire volume saving and taking care of the people she loves!!! and i loved every second of it!!!

i would’ve liked to see more of her and klein/whitley/willow. i think there’s a lot of great stuff in that dynamic (not me crying when klein showed up at the manor...) and especially between weiss and her mother. i hope we get one big schneeuinon in vacuo once they + winter are all in the same location (but that’s gonna be a while i think lmao)

it’s been said a million times before but weiss?? shaking and crying but using gambol shroud anyway?? even though she thinks her teammates are all dead?? giving ruby the staff and pushing her out of the line of fire and pulling blake back to safety??? fighting cinder, a fucking wholeass maiden, with no aura because she needs to protect penny?? only unable to get up and keep fighting after she watches gambol shroud (the last physical piece she has of her teammates) go over the edge??? bro. BRO. i’m legit tearing up just TYPING THAT. god she’s gonna find her team at that island resort and never let them go. gonna be like v4 jaune all over again huh??

blake/yang:

not as much here since they didn’t get a whole lot of focus this volume, but i enjoyed all their scenes! yang just fuckin going at salem was 1000/10.

i will say...i think blake’s gonna kiss yang when they meet up in tropical paradise. and good for her!! (especially if this volume’s been planned since the beginning, it makes sense that this would be the writers’ idea for where they wanted their first kiss to be)

jaune:

going from ren saying “he has no fear. he believes that we can do this” about jaune to, five chapters later, forcing jaune to deliver a killing blow to penny was just CRUEL

the fucking dissonance of jaune haha!-awkward-renora-moment-exit vomit-boy-through-the-portals hit-in-the-head-with-a-rock arc being the one that penny asks..............bro. don’t hmu.

it’s going to be such a long time until we see him smile again.

also. the moment when crocea mors snaps in half...again, my stomach dropped.

but it’s okay! he’ll be fine without a weapon! he’s the ~strategist~! *breaks the fuck down*

it hurts so much too to think about, like oscar mentioned.....even if/when he does reunite with ren and nora, he’s not gonna be the same person he was when they last saw him. he’s not gonna be their goofy, wholesome, soft, snarky, healer team leader anymore. he just got his shit sorted out, he just stopped being actively suicidal, and tbh i think this might affect him worse than what happened with pyrrha. especially since they were compounding in his brain--what he did gave penny more of a choice than pyrrha ever got, but GEEZ.

nora:

NORA MY BELOVED

okay. OKAY. so like she was passed out for half the volume but what we did get of her was fucking amazing

nora’s mom i am going to find you and have some words. i’ve mentioned this before but this woman has the same energy as the mom from grave of the fireflies who was like “i know we’re actively being bombed right now but i’m going to abandon my children and get myself to safety.” SQUARE UP BITCH. i hope we never see nora’s mom in the show because i will become filled with rage

but nora herself??? flawless. perfection.

i really did love her journey this volume. realizing that she wants to become her own person apart from ren, and then telling him that when he says that he loves her?? nora sweetie that was heartbreaking but i am SO SO PROUD OF YOU.

nora putting herself first for once and being told that people love her WE FREAKING LOVE TO SEE IT

except NOW that’s all gonna go haywire 😭😭😭

like...the moment in the finale where you can see she’s hesitant to leave jaune to to go vacuo but she goes anyway because he’s her leader and he doesn’t like splitting up either and she loves him and she trusts him only for her to get STUCK ON THE OTHER SIDE BANGING ON THE PORTAL. that scene fucking BROKE me. you just KNOW she’s gonna be hating herself for going through and leaving jaune (even though nobody knew it was one way!!!) and when the portal dissolves and he doesn’t come through........

she really thinks that she’s lost TWO teammates now. that’s TWO teammates that she wasn’t able to save. she saved ren from the nuckelavee but pyrrha’s dead and as far as she knows jaune’s dead too

and jaune’s her fucking family!!!!!!!

and like. when we see her on the vacuo side of the portal, we see that she’s got the happy huntresses behind her. she did her job and she gathered them but now she can’t get back through and AHHHHHH. FUCK. when she drops to her knees because she realizes.........that fucking killed me. i’m tearing up now just typing this sdmndbm

and like. the worst part is that she just realized that she wants some time away from ren. but everyone else is gone and just like when they were kids he’s all she’s got and they are gonna lean on each other harder than ever because this time they both lost EVERYTHING. not just jaune, but ruby, who was their teammate for a while too. weiss, who took such great care of nora while she was injured. penny, who nora helped with blake’s advice. yang, who ren had time to bond with this volume. FUCK

it’s gonna hurt so bad to watch but i cannot WAIT to see what nora does next and how she moves forward. god. this is gonna kill her. it’s killing ME and i’m just a viewer lmao

ren:

remember that one week where neath went on twitter and was like “i love renora and i’m gonna make that everyone else’s problem”??? yeah. that was a good week lmao

speaking of neath. MASSIVE PROPS TO HIM FOR HIS WORK. he managed to give ren every single emotion in the book this volume and none of it sounded ooc despite ren being such a repressed character before. he did incredible!!!!

I LOVED REN SO MUCH THIS VOLUME GOD. i mean i love him in every volume BUT HE HAD SO MANY GOOD MOMENTS AND SUCH A GOOD ARC

i’ve already talked about it at length but the scene where his semblance evolves is one of my favorites in the whole show. he’s so fucking full of love that it’s literally tearing him apart and when he finally accepts that fact his ENTIRE SOUL levels up!!! he looks at himself and there are pink petals falling off of him because he can’t contain the love in his body anymore!!! it’s there in a literal, physical manifestation and it’s so. fucking. GOOD. FUCK.

and also my obligatory remark about how he was thinking about oscar and pyrrha and his parents in that moment. people he loved platonically and familially. rwby goes so fucking hard for platonic love and i can’t ever thank them enough. to see ren have this realization because he was thinking about oscar.....god i’m gonna cry again LMAO

and then after that the way that he just. looks at jaune in every scene with the biggest fucking heart eyes. i’m gonna fucking combust he loves his leader SO MUCH. (which. as i mentioned in the nora section. pain now)

and the nora stuff........JUST AS GOOD

another thing i’ve talked about a lot but to see him apologize, be emotionally open, listen to what nora’s saying and what nora needs, TELL HER THAT HE LOVES HER FIRST, not holding a single thing against her, agreeing to wait for her to be ready.........literal perfection holy shit

romance is normally not one of my favorite aspects of any media but i will make an exception for whatever the fuck ren and nora got going on

basically as a ren stan / jnpr stan i was thriving this volume and then that finale hit me and i know i will be in pain until they reunite again

i have a handful of jnr gifs that i was planning to make during the hiatus but now they’re all PAIN aksjhdasjdh

oscar:

deeply worried about the quickly approaching merge. i’m really hoping that oscar and oz stay separate but i also love seeing all the animation/voice acting nuances that indicate that they’re getting closer to the merge.......AH

this volume really hammered home just how strong this kid is. he stands up to SALEM and does the right thing even despite the torture cause he’s so BRAVE and STRONG and when he trusted hazel with the password DESPITE IT ALL. ugh. so good.

i love oscar so much and i’ve loved seeing him grow!!!

penny:

serious stuff coming in the next bullet point but. GOD. her model’s head is so big and i don’t know WHY but this stuck out to me every time she was standing next to someone else. it might be because of the volume of her hair (but yang’s hair also has a lot of volume, and her head is normal sized)??? idk it just threw me off a lot. every time she was like, talking to ruby or something, all i could think about was how her head was bigger than ruby’s ENTIRE TORSO lmao. (also why didn’t they give her human body shoes skdjhaksjh)

that said.........oh, penny 😭😭😭😭😭

i’m surprised that she died but only because i thought her plot armor was pretty thick LMAO. narratively it makes a lot of sense and i’m glad her story ended the way it did.

i’ve seen a lot of people interpreting her actions in the finale as “choosing to die,” but i don’t think that’s the case?? penny’s friends all saved her every single time that she presented her own death as an option. that’s what makes this so tragic, is that they successfully saved her every time she offered that, and that in the end, she still died. she was gonna die anyway. she was impaled by cinder--jaune didn’t have enough time to heal her before cinder defeated weiss (who had no aura!!) and turned on them again. penny made her own choices when 1. she asked to die at the hands of a friend, rather than by cinder’s soul-sucking grimm arm and whatever horrible fate that includes and 2. to choose her successor. and i don’t blame her for making either of those choices! she wanted to die with as much dignity as peace as she could and to choose whose life she would be intertwined with. and while it’s very sad, i’m glad that penny finally got some sense of control over herself and her legacy.

and like...she was so happy when she met up with winter!! she was so happy to have full autonomy for once!!! that scene was both heartwarming and heartbreaking!!!

i also think that penny’s death reinforces the idea that remnant is gonna be very different by the time rwbyjnorqe is done with it. now not one but two kindhearted girls have gotten killed because they got tangled up in the maiden powers—which were originally meant to be a gift!! and i’m very interested to see what the resolution is gonna be!! (i know it’s gonna be in like. volume 52 or something alsjfndnx but still!!)

also, if nothing else, i am very glad that whole “pietro sacrifices the last of his aura to revive her” theory is gone. i hate that theory lmao

i will say, while i enjoyed penny’s role this volume, i do think that maybe some of her screentime could’ve gone elsewhere. i get that there needed to be a lot of focus on her, so that we would be attached when she died, but i think it would’ve been beneficial to spread that screentime elsewhere just a bit, especially since she wasn’t really developing at all. hitting the same point with her like seven times did start to feel a bit repetitive lol. my vote would be for extra time with the schnees, or the jn(o)r reunion at schnee manor, or maybe a scene checking in with pietro and maria!!

emerald:

YOU DEFECTED!!!! GOOD FOR YOU GIRL!!!!

i hope we get a LOT more time with her in the future. she’s still gotta work out the cinder thing of course but i also think it’s gonna be super interesting to see how she acts now that she (alongside oscar, ren, nora, the hh, and winter) is one of the closest things their group has to a “leader”

also like........good for her for being one of the LEAST traumatized people this volume despite being THREATENED BY SALEM

winter:

WINTER OH MY GOD

seeing her struggle with her emotions all volume.....only to finally accept them and save marrow’s life.....and because of that choice she realizes how long overdue it was and goes all in on helping the heroes.....and is eventually chosen to become the next winter maiden by the girl who challenged her to accept her emotions in the first place......😭😭😭 chef’s kiss

“you chose nothing. this was a gift.” *demolishes ironwood but doesn’t stick around cause he’s not worth it* *fights cinder* POETIC CINEMA!!!!!

also i cannot wait to see her schneeunion with willow, whitley, and klein.......even if she does have to be the one to tell them what happened to weiss 😭

cinder:

CINDER I HATE YOU BUT ONLY BECAUSE YOU’RE SUCH A GOOD VILLAIN

her backstory was pretty self explanatory but i think this was a good time to spell it out especially while we were in atlas. the culmination of that, her consistent failures to achieve her goals after v3, and watts dragging her really all just came together to make her so much more intimidating and efficient and i loved watching it.

like i know there’s people who don’t like her as a character but she’s always so fun to watch and her va does AMAZING and she’s just. so INTERESTING

also. i cannot wait for her to find out that ruby and neo are both alive (and especially when salem finds out they’re both alive LMAO)

also also her line to ruby about never being born feels.......awfully specific??? i wonder if it’s a hint at some other part of salem/cinder/ruby/summer lore (like her “and i refuse to starve” line from last volume)

also also also CINDER.......lying to salem is gonna backfire on you at one point or another.......HM

salem:

gosh i love salem. she’s such a good villain and i loved all her scenes (especially the fight scene...SO COOL).

very interested in whatever she does next!! since the only remaining lackey she has is cinder (who is now starting to try to manipulate her) and tyrian and mercury, who are in vacuo, i’m curious about her next steps. is she gonna keep recruiting, now that people know who she is?? is she gonna come to vacuo herself?? she could definitely do a WHOLE LOT OF DAMAGE with the refugee situation there, so i’m super excited to see how her next moves play out!!

hazel/tyrian/watts/merc/neo:

rip hazel. glad we were able to get an INSANE fight scene out of him before his death BUT ALSO WHAT’S WITH YOU BEATING THE SNOT OUT OF A 14 YEAR OLD HUH

listen. listen. i know merc-rescues-oscar was never a possibility BUT i still love that idea. it lives in my mind rent free!!!

i feel like mercury’s gonna be so insane after the worst road trip ever in a confined space with tyrian that he’s gonna be immediately redeemed by team sssnn and the power of himbofication upon landing in vacuo LMAO

real talk though, i am VERY interested in what happens when mercury sees emerald again and learns she defected. like, this is his friend, who he’s tried to keep safe the only way he knows how (by keeping his head down and not angering their abuser) and she got out but he didn’t. GOD. AND in the first fight she was in after defecting, she used the move that she learned by watching him!!!! that’s gonna be SO GOOD and i can’t wait to see it!!!

neo is a wildcard and i love watching her fight and i think it’s SO INTERESTING that she went over the side with rwby and jaune and i CAN’T WAIT to see what she does next.

WATTS MY DUDE. what a GOOD volume for him. like the stuff where he yells at cinder was SO COOL to see and it was so funny that he thought that wasn’t gonna come back to bite him LMAO. i think this was super fitting for him and while i like him as a villain, i think this was a good place for his story to end. i had a lot of fun watching his scenes this volume.

qrow/robyn:

I LOVE THEIR SIBLING ENERGY. robyn talking qrow down and them bonding over their semblances together was so great.

i also loved qrow’s semblance...evolving?? changing?? idk what exactly happened yet, but i know that if i too hung out with robyn hill for 48 hours straight my outlook on life would improve dramatically.

i do hope robyn makes it to vacuo soon because she will be invaluable at handling the refugee crisis there.

on the other hand, if qrow gets to vacuo and finds out that ruby and yang (and three more of his adopted kids) never made it........PAIN. oh my god it’s gonna be like summer all over again 😭😭

aceops:

did not expect to get teary-eyed when vine died. and yet i did. that “themes of death” cw on the finale was CERTAINLY SOMETHING HUH

loved them! would’ve loved to see more of them lmao. maybe even just cutting back to them in the crater reacting to some of the stuff going on.

i very much hope we get to see them in the future! i know the vacuans aren’t gonna be happy with the atlas/mantle people showing up unannounced but i feel like if there’s anyone who’s gonna be able to earn their respect, it’s the organized-and-saved-the-lives-of-those-downtrodden-by-atlas-happy-huntresses.

maria & pietro:

okay. SO. my thoughts are either that they made it to vacuo (penny did see where amity would touch down, so it’s possible that a portal was placed in that location and they made it through) or qrow picks them up.

either way, i hope we get to see them again. I LOVE THESE TWO GEEZERS!!!

ironwood:

not much to say here except that i loved it. i loved how he got more and more paranoid, i loved that he vaporized jacques schnee, i loved that he only went cartoon-villain at the last moment, i loved that he died unceremoniously surrounded by the thing he thought would save them all. i love that cinder got in one final chess reference beforehand. 10/10

the hound:

it feels like a lifetime ago that this guy died but holy shit. holy SHIT.

i want whitley to summon the hound!! it was an enemy that pushed him to grow, i think it would be neat!!

ambrosius:

LOVED THIS DUDE. i LOVE how his powers work!!! like, even though it’s magic, it’s so realistic because that’s how creation works!!! you gotta design the EXACT thing you want or else its gonna be fucked up!!!

like. okay. so (back on my engineering bs again lmao) for example. let’s say i’m writing a program where the user enters a number from 1-10 and it’s displayed on the computer screen. so i write whatever code i need that says “take user input and put on screen.” that’s what ambrosius did when he created the portals and the pathways between them!

and then let’s say i also put a warning to the user that says “only enter numbers from 1-10.” that would be ambrosius saying “do not fall.”

but...the user can still enter whatever they want. what happens if they put in the number 100? what happens if they type a letter? this program only puts numbers from 1-10 on screen, so who knows what’s gonna happen. and that’s what happens when people fall off the railings!!!

“oh, but you told them what numbers to enter” yeah but humans are unpredictable and ya gotta account for the human element when doing stuff like this!! team rwby didn’t account for people falling off--because why would people fall off if they were told not to? but the human element messed that up anyway!!!

anyways i’m a fucking nerd apparently but it was super cool to see that reflected in ambrosius!!! i’m a big fan!!!

like whenever people call him tricky or sneaky...no!!! he was just doing exactly what he was told to do!!!! so good!!!

also i wanna see him hang out with his sister jinn lmao

alright and here’s my thoughts/predictions for v9:

first off i just wanna say that this entire section (this entire post really, but especically this section) is just me spitballing lmao. we literally have ZERO clue what’s happening next or where they are, i’m just throwing out some stuff that’s crossed my mind! whatever crwby gives us is gonna be infinitely better than whatever i come up with lmao

that said, i have two ideas for what could be happening in madagascar.

option one is the one i’ve seen other people toss around, which is the whole wonderland-land-of-the-dead thing. i’m kinda torn on this because i think it could be good for penny’s storyline, but not really anyone else’s?? sure, yang and ruby could see summer, but weiss would see...jacques?? and blake would see...adam?? i’m not sure what weiss and blake would have to say to them/learn from them the same way ruby and yang would.

on that same idea, jaune could definitely see pyrrha, but again, i’m wondering what purpose that would serve? obviously jaune’s actions in the finale were guided by pyrrha (or specifically her mom, and realizing that pyrrha never had a choice either), but it’s clear that that’s the case for all of team jnpr, and it will be probably forever. their scene together at pyrrha’s memorial felt like they were closing the door--specifically--on their grief. on the other hand, those actions are super relevant right now and i will never turn down the chance to see pyrrha!!! it’s just free waterworks babey!!!

neo also has roman, but i can’t really see roman admitting to anyone that he got swallowed by a grimm 😭😭 just seems too embarrassing for him LMAO

for penny, i think this could work nicely. all she ever wanted was to not have her life controlled by others--kind of like alice in wonderland (the disney movie version because i am fairy tale illiterate lmao). if penny gets to exist after death in a land where she gets to choose everything for herself i think she would be very happy!

again, if this ends up being the case, crwby could 100% make it work! (and i am 0% opposed to maya model pyrrha.) i just personally am not as sold on this being the case as some others are.

option two imo is vacuo but in the past. which i know seems kind of weird BUT i have reasons!

so we know a few things about vacuo. one, it used to be an oasis and was considered a paradise until atlas and mistral destroyed it for the dust. two, it has giant motherfucking crabs that people like to eat. yes this is all i have to go off of BUT both of those things are in the end credits scene we got!

also, them landing in past-vacuo makes sense on ambrosius’ level. their “one way ticket” probably didn’t include all four dimensions of coordinates--so i could see them landing in the same x, y, and z as the official doorway, but at a different time. the creation would still do exactly what it was asked to do--drop them in vacuo.

there’s also a couple other things. “vacuo” means “in a vacuum” which i’ve heard v9 is supposed to be. also in before the dawn, sun saw some bigass magic tree that awakened his semblance which this one definitely could qualify as

(okay. side note. when i first saw the tree i thought of the glowy tree from james cameron blue people avatar. IDK WHY, i haven’t seen that movie in years??? i also had to google it to make sure i wasn’t making it up and apparently it’s called the “tree of souls.” which would also make sense if it helped sun awakened his semblance. i don’t think rwby based something off of blue people avatar, it’s probably more likely that blue people avatar is based off of some fairytale/mythology that i don’t know anything about LMAO)

i don’t actually think option two is gonna happen, but it was fun to think about!!

also either option opens the opportunity to time not passing 1:1 in current vacuo & rwby’s island getaway which???????? AHHHHH

alright so now to the actual characters lmao. i mentioned wby earlier. i honestly have no clue what neo’s gonna be up to, she’s such a wild card and i LOVE IT.

ruby and jaune is gonna be...........PAIN. NO MATTER WHAT. i have no idea how ruby is gonna react--she might just be so overwhelmed by everything that she snaps/yells at jaune which. PAIN. but she also might not?? which. ALSO PAIN. i feel like no matter what ruby does, jaune’s gonna blame himself anyway. god. i love their friendship SO MUCH and this is gonna HURTTTT

and on that, he doesn’t have ren and nora this time to pull him back from the ledge. this dude’s guilt complex is gonna go crazy especially since he doesn’t have his team and double especially if ruby/rwby blames him for what happened. god it’s gonna HURT TO WATCH.

on a wildly different note, i hope we do get to see vacuo/qrow throughout volume 9. if i go a whole volume without ren and nora i WILL cry lmao.

also it’s gonna be super interesting to see how their group fares!!! vacuo’s fuckin nuts and i’d love to see winter just destroying the grimm there (3 headed giraffe my beloved) and see how the atlas/mantle refugees handle the climate--and how the vacuans react to all of them LMAO

ALSO!!!! THE SULFER FISH WERE THERE!!! very glad to see that they’re in vacuo too because from the concept art it seems like they have super unique abilities and i’m excited that we may get to properly see them, instead of just cameos!!!

you know what I want to do?

I wanna make a children’s film as versatile, creative, artistic, and generally incredible as The Road To El Dorado was. I mean, how many kids movies can you genuinely say have a cult following? This weird and quirky dreamworks film is just SO memorable on so many levels, and that’s what I wanna do at one point.

I mean, right from the beginning the characterization sets in so naturally. The dialogue is a true gem within it, the animation is so fluid and the way the main characters’ introduction scene flows is just FUN. the way they move, the way they banter with each other, you get such a rock-solid sense of what kind of people these two idiot best friends are within the first couple minutes of their screentime, right down to having unique mannerisms and speech patterns. Like, how much thought really goes into characters in kids movies now? I have a little sister, I take her to a lot of movies because there’s not really much else to do where we’re from if you’re not a tourist, so I see a lot of childrens films that just... feel so BORING as far as the characters are concerned. And my style as a writer is very character-centric. I definitely follow the belief that good characters can carry a bad story, but bad characters can’t carry a good story.

Now what about the STORY though?? Oh my god, is it RIVETING!! and I don’t mean that in the BDG sarcasm sense of the word, it’s genuinely captivating. It’s so original; they took the history of Cortez, mashed it up with the legend of El Dorado, threw two dumbass con men in the mix, a cowardly war horse, and had them accidentally stumble across the lost city of gold where the locals mistook them for their native gods, so now their lust for adventure/greed/the local con woman who set them up with that disguise in the first place has them keeping up the act for as long as they can. It’s got its own built-in suspense, the antagonist is legit well-written because he’s a religious fanatic who genuinely believes that he’s right, and there’s the constant stress that settles in tension between our Spanish con men. And the way that they execute it gives it so much rewatch value, because that tension feels natural, like how you might drift apart from someone you once called your best friend because you just grow to be too different from each other, unlike almost all relationship tension in Hollywood which honestly just feels forced and unrealistic. There’s a sense realism in the insanity of the plot, which makes it SO GOOD!!

and oof,, the visuals?? the VISUALS!! I miss 2D animation so much you guys,, please bring it back. El Dorado felt like they really utilized their artistic potential. I mean,,, it’s not really a musical because there’s only like 2 musical numbers in it and one of them’s this scene, but like,,, LOOK AT THIS!!! The drama,,, the opulence,,, the colours,, the lighting,, the framing,, the cinnamon topography...

I... I really love The Road To El Dorado guys I just,, I feel like kids movies are such an underappreciated medium that you can do so much more with than cookie cutter story bullshit. “oh what if emojis but movie??” fuck outta here!! i wanna see more of THIS!!! There’s so much artistic potential in kids films that just doesnt get realized because its thought that the target audience is somehow lesser and i think thats a real shame and that we should be promoting the gems like El Dorado and Emperor’s New Groove and Prince of Egypt and Zootopia (don’t @ me i fuckin love zootopia) instead of just churning out films with no soul behind them at the speed of light

like,, Road To El Dorado stuck with me and to this day I’m raving on about how amazing it is not in spit of being a kids movie but i guess to try to get the point across that kids movies can be so incredible if we just gave them a fighting chance??? like,, kids arent a lesser audience those are literally the most neuro-flexible beings on the planet and you’re giving them subpar bullshit?? i say NO!!

HEWWO

Hello everyone, welcome to Royal Magic Academy Radio, a podcast about Wizardess Heart. I’m your host, Mari. I’m home from Anime Expo and ready to start working on this stuff again. My trip was pretty crazy and I needed more downtime than I expected, so thank you everyone for being patient with me. And since a lot has happened and I had a lot to say anyways, this episode’s gonna be fairly long. So, let’s get on with the show.

GAMING NEWS

We have a LOT of gaming news. The new collection event, Touch the Stars. We also got new items in the Make a Dates. And we got a brand new route featuring the newest love option, creepy ghost I mean Gray! We also got confirmation that Wizardess will be getting a season 10, which I’m personally far more excited for! We also have a special log-in bonus going on and it’s ghost-themed, so I’m already obsessed with it.

And finally, we have a brand new feature in the game! With Gray’s route and on, there will be an option to get reminded of what happened in the last chapter. I think this is an amazing feature and although the past routes, as of now, aren’t going to implement it, I still think it’s a really nice thing to have because let’s face it, sometimes you drop games for a month or more and need to get reminded about stuff. Or you’re like me and you never remember anything ever.

ANIME EXPO

Now, I'm sure a lot of you are eager to hear about Anime Expo this year, especially since I've been pretty quiet about it on all my social media. I always get really tired after cons since they're so over-stimulating in the first place, but this year was. Well.

I would love to say that AX was amazing this year. I'd love to tell you guys that it was so much fun, so well-organized, etc. But that'd be lying. And also you can't use the words "AX" and "well-organized" in the same sentence unless the word "isn't" is between them. This year's con was a god damn nightmare.

I've been going to AX for a couple of years now. This was my sixth year and I have to say this was the WORST Anime Expo I've been to.

Let's start with the lines. Now, it's always a joke that Anime Expo gets called LineCon because the lines are insane. Now, those lines are usually for panels, food trucks, and badge pickup/registration. AX didn't start mailing general admission badges until last year, and that was the year they started doing RFID badges. Last year was their FIRST YEAR using these and it went fine! This year however, no.

They didn't have enough security for 100,000 attendees and lines to get in were hours long. I was lucky it only took me 2 and a half hours. Some of my friends waited in line for 4 hours. Some people on twitter were saying as much as 8 hours. The next day they fixed it but it was disgusting to see a con that could clearly handle this situation well, as entry lines last year were fine, handle it so poorly.

And then there's staff and volunteers. Normally, I've only ever had issues with the convention center staff. Some of them are rude and misgender a lot of attendees. Which for me personally, I get it, since I'm biologically female, I present super femininely, and I don't wear pronoun pins. But I've seen staff misgender people with pronoun buttons the size of a baby's head and with bold text on it. While facing them dead on. And I can't really forgive that.

But this year some volunteers were hella rude which. I've honestly never experienced before it was pretty shocking hearing the stories. I don't blame volunteers for being frustrated considering how shitty this con is ran, but I don't think taking that frustration out on anyone is okay.

This con is the biggest in the US. I'd be far more forgiving of the hiccups if

1) The con was just starting out.

2) They were small.

3) They didn't have it under control last year.

4) The con didn’t passive aggressively blame attendees for their own incompetence, like they did with the long lines Day 1.

But that's not the case. This con is huge and has been going on for years. I know every con is going to have their struggles and that's fine. It's expected and it's totes okay. But this year was awful. They seemingly went back on things and it was worse than last year. Especially considering lines and security. That is unacceptable considering it was totally fine last year. I just. I do not understand how you can regress so much. This year's con was terrible and I'm not going back next year.

And now that we have the salt out of the way, we can talk about the good things. And I'll play some footage of the con in the background, so if you want to see it and you're just playing this in the background, go ahead and switch over, but I will try and describe Solmare's booth the best I can. I'd also like to thank some of the team members from Ceragon Dubs for joining me in this segment! Originally we were all gonna vlog together but. It was my first time vlogging so I was pretty lost so we're just gonna use the footage and not include audio. Enjoy my horrible cinnamon topography, guys.

It was honestly a really lovely booth and I really enjoyed it. It was just. So beautiful and I know that's really silly, but I loved it. The walls were lined with concept art for Obey Me! on one side, manga on the other, and then Moe Ninja Girls. The front section of the booth was tall and had banners for Obey Me and Moe Ninja Girls hanging and it was just. Idk why, it was such a unique design and to be honest, a lot of booths at AX are kinda the same-looking. The booth essentially had 4 parts: a survey area, the area for the Moe demo, a place for a small Obey Me demo, and a place to take a picture with the Obey Me cosplayer they had.

I played a couple of the Obey Me demos and I’m honestly excited for it. I do have to stay tho there wasn’t anything outside of Obey Me or Moe, so that kinda sucked. Although I do think they were handing out the Klaus headbands from last year one day, since I saw some people wearing them when my friends and I were outside rehearsing for our performance.

Also, this isn't an Ikemen fan account, but I have to give HUGE props to their company for the greatest thing I’ve ever seen. So there’s a space issue with AX and you’re not allowed to sit in the exhibitor’s hall, and there used to be two halls were you could sit and AX stupidly made one into the 21+ lounge, so there’s really only one place to sit. Ikemen had like. One third of their booth as a merch shop and the other ⅔ were a sitting area where they were playing their dubbed animated shorts and honestly, it was so nice have a place to unwind and it was great. I don’t think I got any pictures of it, but it was sooooo wonderful.

But anyway, that was Anime Expo. I’m not going next year, and this year kinda sucked as a last hurrah, but it’s like that sometimes.

ROUTE REVIEW

Okay, so let’s shift gears a bit. It’s time for a route review, yay!!! Today we’re gonna be talking about Hugo’s route! Now, we all know Hugo is one of my favorite dudes, but I have to say, his route was so incredibly well done.

It was well-written, the plot was compelling, and all the loose ends were tied up or had a satisfying ending. Not to mention they had a lot of good foreshadowing. The one that stays with me is them winning the promise pendants in a game competition and those necklaces later coming handy towards the end. Everything is cohesive and although it’s definitely not what I expected, it’s hands down one of my favorite routes in the game. It does jump around to places and the plot itself is kind of weird, but the writing team makes it work and make sense. But the way things tie into each other is well done and I love it for that.

I also love the romance in it. Sometimes you love a character, but their route doesn’t really do them justice. Falling in love with Hugo felt natural and I definitely fell for him while reading, and all this time later, I’m still as smitten with him as I was when I first read his route. The romance was also pretty cutesy, but then again I just love the whole bodyguard and protectee falling in love trope, but still.

So bottom line, Hugo’s route is one of my favorites in the game and I definitely recommend reading it.

CONCLUSION

Whew, we had a lot to talk about today! From here on, I’ll be back to my regular uploading schedule, so unless major things happen in a week, we won’t have long-ass episodes like this. I know this episode is kinda negative and I'm sorry but... you know, I had to, you know... Call out Anime Expo. As you guys know, I don't really like being negative, especially on the podcast but... I would be lying not to mention all the shitty things that happened and... I know a lot of you probably are interested in Anime Expo, since it is the biggest con in the US and it's in LA, which, I love LA. So I want you guys to know the full story of the con even though a lot of things were really terrible and I had a really bad experience this year. And next episode, I'm gonna make sure that everything's a lot more light-hearted and fun and positive and stuff, and kinda, you know, make up for this episode. But anyway. Every week we are going to be interviewing a writer from The Magicians fandom. If you would like to be interviewed or you want to nominate a writer, get in touch via our ask box.

First things first, tell us a little about yourself.

Hey humans or magical creatures of the internet. I’m Ella but online I guess I go by Margo. I’m an 18 year old university student in the United States (East coast). I dance and speak French fluently. I started watching the magicians after the first season came out on Netflix and heard about the show from a BuzzFeed quiz (crazy right?!). I go by MargoWicker on ao3 and that’s where I post my work. I love creative writing (fanfic) because it is a way to create a diverging story you can control based off of an amazing foundation the show creates.

How long have you been writing for?

I’ve been writing for just over a year for The Magicians (unless we’re counting that random stuff I wrote back in the beginning of high school) and I can’t say I’m all that great. *nervous laughter*

What inspired you to start writing for The Magicians?

I joined a Magicians discord and got inspired by all the lovely talented writers who make up part of the discord channel. I also felt so compelled by the story and what goes on in the show. I think the visuals in particular played a large part of wanting to write based off of that because they are so enamoring. It’s some quality cinnamon topography (cinematography).

Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write? What it is about them that makes them your favourite?

My favorite characters to write are Margo and Julia. I think they interact with their environment in such an interesting way. They're also my favorite characters in the show so I suppose I’m biased. They're also easier for me to write in that I relate to a lot of the aspects of their personalities. I love Margo’s tough bitch exterior and Julia’s intense personality. Also they’re strong women of color. Woo!

Do you have a preference for a particular season/point in time to write about?

Yes. Some weird limbo area where everyone can exist at Brakebills and live their lives for a second. I also like a limbo area of Fillory. Basically, I like a place where my narrative can play out without an ouroboros of ass fucking it up.

Are you working on anything right now? Care to give us an idea about it?

I’m working on a multi-chapter piece with Julia and Margo. It’s angsty yet romantic but I am working on incorporating all the senses into it. Hopefully it'll be out before the end of October. It’s a better version of the fic I referenced in my Five @ Five.

How long is your “to do list”?

Moderately long I suppose because there are a few things I’m still working on and I come up with ideas too often. I also write in spurts and forget that I’m working on things.

What is your favourite fic that you’ve written for The Magicians? Why?

I think my favorite was Good Liquor Gonna Carry Me Down (Julia/Quentin at Brakebills) or Drinking Partners (Margo/Julia finding themselves at Brakebills) because they’re so imagery heavy.

Many writers have a fic that they are passionate about that doesn’t get the reception from the fandom that they hoped for. Do you have a fic you would like more people to read and appreciate?

Either Good Liquor Gonna Carry Me Down (Julia/Quentin) or Golden Slumbers (Julia/Fen) probably because they’re less popular ships. It's kind of funny how I didn’t even write Quilia for my self, but I ended up liking it. Honestly though I’d take any appreciation.

What is your writing process like? Do you have any traditions or superstitions that you like to stick to when you’re writing?

Its pretty ridiculous but I love to prewrite everything and set up the story. I rarely end up with anything mildly of quality if I just go with a stream of consciousness. I don't have many superstitions though or I just haven't noticed them.

Do you write while the seasons are airing or do you prefer to wait for hiatus? How does the ongoing development of the canon influence and inspire your writing process?

I will write during both. I think because I like my fics to be suspended in a time bubble, it seems like canon narrative is less of an issue. That said, I do pull from ongoing canon during the season and I think that comes out in some of my writing. I think I am most heavily influenced from any character development in my writing.

What has been the most challenging fic for you to write?

I wrote one piece of smut called Strawberry Wine and learned that it is (at least for me) surprisingly difficult to write about sex without making it all Fifty Shades (lame) or cliche.

Are there any themes or tropes that you particularly like to explore in your writing?

I think I like hurt/comfort and romance tropes the most. The romance I use most often is femslash just as a personal relatability aspect. I do tend to use at least one party scene in my writing as well as lighting (usually morning light).

Are there any writers that inspire your work? Fanfiction or otherwise?

I’m inspired by the entire body of work from the magicians fandom. There are too many great writers for me to reference them all and if I did I’d be afraid to leave people out. I do have to say I use more visual imagery (like shows or photos from the show) to work off as I am a more visual person.

What are you currently reading? Fanfiction or otherwise?

I am not reading any fic in particular, I just tend to scroll through ao3 and read it all in one go. I have just been reading about economic colonialism for class. Does that count?

I really need to get back into reading books for fun.

What is the most valuable piece of writing advice you’ve ever been given?

Tropes aren’t always a bad thing if used well. Also don’t feel like you need to pander to a certain audience. Write for yourself! (That was a solid 3 pieces haha)

Are there any words or phrases you worry about over using in your work?

I think I tend to overuse some sentence styles. I gotta work on my phrasing and sentence variety to keep it interesting. Also this isn’t really a word but I feel like I write in passive voice or I’m not that great with picking a good verb tense but who knows.

What was the first fanfic that you wrote? Do you still have access to it?

Dear god this is embarrassing. It's a Wattpad fanfiction that I still have access to, and it’s an angsty Grace Helbig (youtuber) and Chester see (Youtuber) fanfic. The writing isn’t the worst and the topic isn't either, it just IS cringy.

Favourite book(The Magicians books)? Second, because I love Julia and her background.

another uwulore question, also media related!! when you're watching something for the first time, what do you feel like you pay attention/value the most - directing/cinnamon topography, writing, acting, or something else??

my favorite!!! ask away at any time!!! so if it’s a really great movie, i don’t notice any of this, and i am too busy just in the experience and immersion of it all. (which is so fucking magical, one of the best and hardest to describe feelings in the world where you don’t yet tangibly know why something is impacting you, haven’t had a chance to pick apart the logistics, but know it’s touching you).

i’d say that on a technical level, writing and directorial design (like not just the cinematography but the cohesive look, blocking, etc.) tend to matter a lot, a lot, a lot to me in favorite films that i return to. i find acting to be magical and impossible and fascinating, though, i have so much respect for it as a craft. but like in most of my favorite films, it’s just that they’ve successfully captured a feeling i didn’t know could be captured you know? and that counts even for the extremely silly.

Week 3 (Jan 21 - 27)

Dzień dobry! Not German - keep reading to find out what language! :)

This post isn’t as long because I’ve actually been doing a lot of schoolwork (really putting the “study” in study abroad) and getting into a routine, which is really comforting. But I had some great experiences this week that I’m excited for you guys to read about!!

On Monday I mainly did some homework and went to class, but that night my friend Steph from Elon and I had dinner. She is on a J-term trip and they spent a night in Berlin so we got to meet up! It was so so wonderful to catch up and spend time together and definitely the piece of home I needed!!

On Tuesday, a few friends and I really wanted to check out the thrift and vintage stores in our neighborhood. There was so much stuff in them and one of them was so well laid out it felt like a museum you could touch. The clothes and other items were from all kinds of decades and was really interesting to look it. Tons and tons of fur coats too - guess they used to get fashionable for the cold Berlin winters!

On Wednesday, my International Finance class got to go to the Deutsche Bundesbank, which is the central bank of Germany. The head of their Political Relations department spoke with us about the role of the Deutsche Bundesbank in Germany in addition to the EU money market. It was very interesting to learn more about how their banking and money system is different than the US and his opinions on the economy. And, they had a pretty nice set-up for us with coffee and a bunch of snacks!

That night, one of my friends and I decided to try a Korean place nearby. He knew that I love different asian foods and I’ve never had Korean so I was super excited. I got Bi bim bap, which is apparently a pretty common dish, and it was so!!!!! incredible!!!! It’s a rice dish with beef and different vegetables on top and I'm pretty sure it’s my new favorite asian dish (except for Taipei - don’t worry.) They also serve kimchi beforehand and it was like a spicy sauerkraut and it was also so good. Hite is a Korean beer, which was also good :)

On Thursday, two of my friends and I went to the Kennedy Museum in Berlin. The museum is all photos and focuses on JFK’s visit to Berlin in 1963 where he did his famous “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. I am so glad we went - the photos were fascinating and it gave such an interesting perspective in terms of Cold War history. They had a lot of photos of JFK in Berlin, but they also had a lot of photos of his entire life which was also fascinating, including a lot on Jackie whom you all know is one of my role models. The reason we went, though, is because they had a special exhibition on First Ladies with pictures and information on not only Jackie O, but also Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, and Michelle Obama. This was so so cool for me becuase I admire them all and loved seeing all the great things they accomplished through photos. They didn’t allow us to take pictures, but I did take a photo outside of vines growing on some buildings that I thought was cool!

Afterward, we went to this cafe near my dorm. I got a friend chicken sandwich with mangoes on it, and I had to talk about it on the blog because those are two of my favorite foods combined and it was amazing. Also I was so excited about it that I forgot to take a picture until halfway through, so here’s a picture of a half-eaten but very delicious sandwich.

On Friday, I unfortunately had to go to two classes. Usually I don’t have class on Friday, but twice a block we have to go an extra day of the week and this was the day. BUT IT STARTED SNOWING THAT MORNING!!! It hasn’t snowed since we’ve been here and it was a beautiful, light, powdery-dusty snow.

My History class went on an excursion to the Topography of Terror, which is a museum housed in the former headquarters of the Gestapo. Inside, they have pictures and information about the Nazis in Germany and around Europe, concentration camps, and WWII in Berlin. The museum is laid out very well - they show all of the major cities and towns in Germany and give information on what they call “the survivors, the perpetrators, and the aftermath” for each place. They also give information about each country in Europe that was affected by WWII, which allowed us to see how far reaching the war was. One of the things I have been the most interested to learn about here is how Germany has handled their past in terms of the Holocaust and WWII. This museum is a perfect example of how the country pays homage wherever they can to the victims of the holocaust and WWII in an informational and respectful way. In my opinion, they have done an incredible job of making their memorials and museums educational and interesting, not just heavy, sad monuments that people forget about or don’t want to accept as they walk by. In class, we also read an article about what Germany has done with all the buildings that were prominent Nazi establishments. They country has worked really hard to turn almost all of them into some sort of educational memorial/museum, in an effort to "accept the burden of our history but we also intend to write a new chapter in our history," as the article stated. In no way does it feel like they’re trying to erase or cover up their past, but it’s very evident that they want you to learn from it. I don’t have any pictures from the exhibit, but it was a really great experience.

On a lighter note of German history, that night we went to a traditional Bavarian beer hall. It’s based on a famous one in Munich and I think they now have the same one in different parts of Germany, so it was kind of touristy but definitely fun. I don’t think they sold anything less than a liter of beer, but I actually really liked the beer I got (which was good because a liter is a lot.) They have big communal tables, live music, and all the waiters wear lederhosen and traditional Bavarian clothing.

And then, I got the currywurst of all currywursts. It was amazing.

Poznań, Poland

On Saturday we took a bus to a small Polish town called Poznań. It was about a 3.5 hour bus ride, but the bus was a coach bus, so I got homework done while riding and it was actually really nice.

This little town was one of the cutest and coolest places I’ve been. Poland is such an interesting country with a lot of history, and Poznań was a perfect place to just do a one-night weekend trip. Once we got there, we went to the Rugalowe Museum. Rugalowe is a croissant-like pastry that Poznań is known for and the museum shows you how they’re made and gives a little history about the town. The guys who did the presentation were really funny and we had so much fun. They let the audience help with the different steps of making the croissants, and my roommate and I got to roll the croissants! We did a pretty good job, in my opinion. The croissants look a lot like regular croissants, but they have a raisin, cinnamon, almond filling and a glaze on top and are so yummy!!

Afterwards we walked about the Old Town Square, which was absolutely beautiful. It snowed the morning before we got there, so there was little dusting that made it even more gorgeous. And we went around sunset so the lighting was really cool.

We had dinner at a local Polish restaurant. I got the fried pork, which was basically schnitzel. The Polish and German foods are pretty similar. Afterwards we walked around the square at night, which was also really nice. And then we went to a really cute cafe for expresso. I know, so European of us :)

On our way back to our Airbnb, we wanted to walk past this big castle that was built by the Germans during 1905, making it the youngest castle in Europe. It was then supposed to be one of Hitler’s residences but renovations were stopped in 1943 because Germany wasn’t doing well in the war. It was later turned into barracks used by the Polish People’s Army. They also have a memorial on the outside for three mathematicians who were students at Poznań University. They were working with the Polish government and basically cracked important parts of the Enigma code, which was a complex cipher used by the Germans so that the Allies couldn’t read their messages. It’s the same basis as The Imitation Game movie, but these three students don’t get any credit even though they made really important strides before the guy in the movie. It was really interesting and cool that it happened in this little town! There was also a statue of the numbers 1956, which symbolizes the year of the Poznań Protests, which were against the communist government of the Polish People’s Republic.

Sunday morning, we went to a really cool cafe with records on the wall.

Then we walked around the square a little more to see it in daylight. We also went inside the pink church, which was much larger than I was expecting!

We promise we didn’t intentionally plan to match each other or the church!! :)

That afternoon, we went to a really cute place that served only Pierogies, which is a traditional Polish dumpling. The ladies were making them right there in the store and they were so so sooooo good. I got a traditional potato one, a duck one, and a pumpkin filled one.

After that, we took the bus back to Berlin. It was such a great trip and I’m so glad we got to experience another culture for the weekend! I really loved seeing a smaller town and learning a little more about Poland.

Fear Street Saga: an excellent love letter to the fear street books while having really good sociopolitical commentary and lesbians WHO LIVE.

Anastasia: pro: best historical fantasy featuring real people ever con: romantasizes the Romanov reign.

The little mermaid: Autistic teenager with a special interest in humans flees her emotionally abusive home and gets tricked into having to get a guy to stay amongst the people she admires (but on the plus side she actually does like the guy)

The princess and the frog: First disney princess I could point my little sister to and say "She looks like you! "

The Swan Princess: The inherent romanticism of wanting to kick your love interest in the shins and turning him down when he cant give you any reason other than beauty to like you and then Him spending several years of his life regretting it and training to save you from your kidnapper despite everyone telling him to give up on you.

The accountant: Autistic(textually) guy uses his special interest to become a badass action hero, smartest character in the movie is a nonverbal autistic person none of it is inspiration porn or vanity projects and though (as far as we know) the actor is not autistic he avoids harmful stereotypes and uses things he experiences similar to autistic people to portray the character.

Tangled: Autistic girl spends formative years locked away by a parental figure who insists they're "protecting" her. Finds love with the first person to offer her freedom. Cons: Antisemtic stereotypes in Mother Gothel that only get worse in the animated series (even though I do like the series too but it has its uh... many faults)

The Haunting (1999) one of my favorites as a child features a bisexual polyamorous woman who LIVES. Also Owen Wilson. Cons: Liam Neeson

The Last Unicorn: Childhood favorite very beautiful stylings

Twilight series: They suck and have a lot of issues with bigotry and romantasizing really bad things but there are some good parts and I enjoy it critically.

The latest Candyman: AN EXCELLENT movie by Nia Decosta and a wonderful reframing of the original Candyman movies.

Paranormal Activity 3: Objectively the best installment in the series but you have to muddle through 1 and 2 to understand it.

BOP: I'm a Harley Quinn Fanatic and it was really good and really well directed

Cold Mornings Are the Best

Shepard padded around the cozy log cabin in an over-sized cable-knit sweater pilfered from her sleeping lover; thick wool socks accentuated her stealth as she wandered in the pre-dawn hours. The front window framed a pristine white world blanketed in fresh snow. Spindly naked trees dotted the landscape between the cabin and the thick dark wall of a pine forest beyond. At the sight of all that snow, she couldn’t help but shiver. And even though it was far warmer inside the cabin than out and she opted to restart the fire while the coffee brewed.

The goosebumps on her bare legs reminded her just how cold it was outside as the occasional chilly breeze sneaked into their refuge and circled around her. Anytime that happened she got a little jealous of Kaidan still curled up beneath the mountain of blankets in the bed their bodies warmed all night. He looked so peaceful, and she had been surprised that her escape went unnoticed. But she really needed coffee and some of those little apple things his mother left for them, which had been calling her name in her sleep. She wasn't sure what they were, but the little three-bite pastries tasted just like Christmas to Nyx. Probably the cinnamon, she thought as she popped the last bite of her third one into her mouth.

With a telltale sputter, Shepard turned and tugged the coffee pot free and filled two mugs—one black, one lightly sweetened. For that reason alone, she made sure she never prepared their coffee in cups that looked alike. Your first mouthful of morning coffee should not be someone else's; it could turn your whole day on its head in one sip. And her life had more than enough sideways, adding to it unnecessarily was something she tried adamantly to avoid.

Part of her expected the smell of the coffee brewing to wake him up, but when she entered the bedroom with the cups, Kaidan was still fast asleep, or seemed to be. As another cool waft of air brushed her legs and made her shiver, Shepard shook her head at her lover. He laid shirtless and mostly uncovered, the sheets and blankets laid low across his hips. Must be a Canadian thing.

She leaned in the doorway, perching one foot on the opposite knee just enjoying the sight of him so peaceful and beautiful. One hand rested behind his head, the other draped over his eyes despite the fact that the only light in the entire cabin came from the fire she lighted in the other room.

Eventually silent footsteps carried her to the bedside where she set down the mugs with little plates of his mother's treats atop them. Shepard sat carefully on the side of the bed and leaned over him—not even a groan. With one finger, she lightly traced the topography of his chest, when she guided it over that tempting slope at his hip, Kaidan wriggled beneath her touch. His smile spread, lazy and warm, over his lips as a relaxed groan accompanied the sleepy stretch of his arms

"How are you the first one up?" he asked, voice strained as he stretched his arms far out to his sides, with a huge yawn. One hand returned to rest on her knee.

"I was always the first one up on Christmas," she revealed, as she leaned forward and kissed him on the tip of his nose. "Merry Christmas, by the way." Another little peck, this one landed on his mouth. Before he could pull her into an embrace that she knew would waylay them, Nyx spun out of his arms and set the plate next to him on the bed. "I brought coffee and,” she gestured toward the nightstand, “whatever those are."

Kaidan laughed, leaning up on one elbow. He pointed to the three types of items on the plate. "Apple Strudels, in miniature. A pouch of apple compote and brie. And when I told her that your favorite holiday food was apple crisp, she tried to make it easier to package."

"Really?" Nyx asked, stepping back toward the bed.

"She likes you. She wanted you to feel comfortable up here, wanted you to have something familiar to make the whole meeting the family thing a little more bearable," he revealed, shrugging one shoulder.

"Well, huh?" Nyx replied, catching her bottom lip between her teeth, thinking about that revelation.

"Huh, what?" Kaidan slid to the edge of the bed, grabbing her hips and guiding her to stand between his knees.

"Mothers usually hate me. Even if I'm not seeing their sons. Usually more so if I am," she added absently. When he squeezed her hips, she looked down at him. "I'm not the type of woman people dream about for their sons, okay? They don’t look at me and see white picket fences or hear the gentle coos of grand babies or the tiny pitter patter of footsteps," she explained. "It's kind of counter to the life I chose. The life I want."

"I know."

Shepard looked down at him and held his face in her hands. "Yes, I realize that, but parents don't always get it."

"That's true. She doesn't understand why, after everything that’s happened, either of us still want to be on active duty. "

"What did you tell her?" Shepard asked, smoothing her hands down his neck and over his bare shoulders. There was a comfortable coolness to his skin that drew her in.

Alenko wrapped his arms completely around her waist and rested his chin against her belly as he looked up at her. "I told her I made a promise. Told her that no matter what, I have your back. And that whatever comes I'm going to be at your side. As a Spectre, I've got a lot more leeway to determine where I serve and with whom. I'm still Alliance, but I'm not going anywhere."

Shepard’s gaze focused on the circle her fingertip drew over the curve of his shoulder for a moment, before meeting his amber eyes again. "What if I decided to retire?"

Despite the serious tone of her voice, he laughed. She guessed, it was as hard for him to imagine as it used to be for her. Of course, she had no idea what retirement, a civilian life, might possibly entail. Of course, there loomed the very real chance that it could well send her running back into the fray in a week’s time. But their time there sparked her curiosity about what it might be like for the two of them to have a calmer, domestic life—one with less gunfire.

Kaidan remained quiet for a long time, perhaps actually thinking about it. "Then I'll go back to teaching, or we'll find a little place somewhere no one can find us unless we want them to." He moved to stand, and she took a step back. "I'm dead serious. I'm not going anywhere. Even under orders. And as far as my family goes, they know I'm happy and that this … us. It’s what I want.” Kaidan cupped her cheek and held her closer. “Hell, Nyx. Most of my family never thought I'd find anyone who’d stick it out—the Alliance, the L2 complications, the Spectre business, any of it. So, they aren't pushing with questions about the future, or grandchildren. And, honestly, with everything that's happened, I think they're just glad I have someone who makes me happy. Someone to share my life with."

Shepard's fingers teased at the back of his neck as he rested his forehead against hers. "I never thought I would find anything like this either—find someone who got it, got me. Let alone get moments like this. Little bite-sized pieces of normality," she said quietly.

His kiss was reassuring, a forceful and passionate reminder that she truly had a partner. Someone who would support her and watch over her—all wrapped up snugly in a clever, capable package. He swore he’d stay by her side for as much time as they could steal from fate and the galaxy.

Kaidan’s hand coasted down her thigh, just far enough to sneak beneath the sweater she’d confiscated. “I do have to say though. I think my sweater looks better on you,” he admitted between deepening kisses.

Nyx squeaked when his cold fingertips brushed over the warmth of her bare bottom.

“Isn’t your sister expecting us for breakfast?” she asked, still clinging to him and making no real effort to thwart his intentions.

His knee slipped between hers and his fingers skimmed over her hip to dip between her legs. “The sun’s barely even up yet,” he argued. His nose brushed hers, the kisses halting as he gazed at her. “But if you’re worried, I’ll stop.”

When his embrace loosened, her grip on his neck tightened. “I’d rather you didn’t.”

“Good. Because I really didn’t want to.” His admission, punctuated with a claiming kiss, came laden with a salacious growl.

She whimpered into his mouth when he pulled her into his arms. The chill of his skin dissipated quickly, but shocked her system none the less. He carried her back to the bed. Carelessly, he swept the plate off the sheets as he laid her down. It shattered against the wall, sending forth a few large shards of crockery. In the bed, four hands proved to be too many when they both tried to peel her out of the over-sized sweater. Expecting his skin to still carry a chill, she was shocked by the heat of him once their bodies fitted against one another again.

He did, however, turn onto his side and pull the blankets back over them to keep out any sneaky breezes. He pressed kisses over the top of her thigh, along her hip and ribs, as she watched him. His mouth paused at her breast, hovering, as those warm amber eyes flicked up at her. Giving it a greedy lick, he watched her lips part with a quiet sigh; then he wrapped his lips around it.

“Kaidan,” she whispered, her fingers trailing down the back of his neck along the line of his spine. She had no desire to interfere, though found herself increasingly desperate for more of his attentions.

Her unspoken wish came true. He placed a kiss upon her breast bone and set his attentions to her other breast, while the first nipple pebbled even tighter when exposed to the wispy cold that invaded the room as it battled with the heat of the fire. The combination of sensations sent tingles along her nerves, intensified by the clever dance of his fingertips and his tongue.

The previous night had been a frenzy of lust and desire, but that morning was a luxuriant gift of sensation. He pushed her back against the thick sheets, his body covering hers. They lingered in deep kisses, ethereal caresses, and the quiet of their cabin. There was no rush, even if someone, somewhere might expect them at some time or another. With a mingling of firm lips, pliant tongues, and sharp teeth, their kisses were tinged with residual desperation. Their history left them with a keen appreciation of what was at stake, what they could lose, what they wanted.

She exhaled his name again. This time it was not carried on a whisper, like a prayer; it escaped her swollen lips on a weighted moan. She grasped at his shoulders, nails digging in to keep her grip. Her other hand fisted in his hair and raised his lips from her neck, so she could seal their mouths in a demanding kiss upon his lips.

He groaned into her mouth, Nyx swallowing it like she was starving. All the while her hips ground against his hand, that played her body like the virtuoso he was.

“Yes, Nyx?” he asked, resting his forehead against hers, breathing heavily. His fingers curled within her as his thumb worked circles around her clit.

Her eyes slipped closed and she pressed her head back into the pillow. “Fuck,” she breathed. He waited for an answer, still teasing her with expert precision. Even though her fingers stretched in search she couldn’t reach his cock to exact retribution, he had cleverly pinned his body to the bed in order to keep her frisky fingers at bay. “I want you.”

“You have me, heart and soul,” he assured, pressing a kiss against her jaw.

“I know that. It’s not what I meant. And you know it.”

“Then you’ll have to be more specific.”

“I want you inside me, Kaidan.”

He growled, like he’d been waiting decades for her to say those words. He moved with haste and ease. She whimpered when his fingers slipped from her, mourning the gaping loss of sensation, momentary as it was. Settling between her legs, Kaidan eased into her before resting some of his weight on one elbow so as not to crush her beneath him. Nyx’s fingers grazed his ribs, skimming lower as he took his time. Once his hips met hers, Nyx wrapped one leg around his thigh. She clung to the back of his neck, while her other hand gave his pert bottom a playful, prodding squeeze.

“All you had to do was ask,” he chuckled against her lips.

Nyx grinned at him, it was gentle, pliant like her body in reply to his. “You just like hearing me say it.”

Kaidan laughed, his smile telling. His lips brushed hers. “As much as you like it when I tell you how much I want to feel you,” he said, moving inside her in a long, slow stroke. “How much I want to lose myself in you.” His hips snapped against hers, making her chirp in response.

They both chuckled as she wrapped her arms around his shoulders and sealed their lips in a sensual kiss, tongues easing against one another. They found a rhythm, slow and decadent, as their bodies rolled against one another. Neither rushed to achieve the heightened sensations they both knew would come eventually. The Spectres just basked in every shiver, every quake in taught muscle and spark firing beneath flushed skin. At that moment, neither Nyx nor Kaidan held anything back. They took and gave freely, fully—pouring themselves and their desires into one another.

In motions that might seem lazy to the casual observer, they enticed one another, feasting on every ragged breath that escaped their lover. They moved together toward a buzzing gravity which only affected the pair of them and would build until it burst into an explosion of ecstasy within their languid bodies. Kaidan and Nyx clung to one another, basking in the echo or their names on one another’s lips as their nerves crackled with anticipation and finally release.

Even after, they retained that erotic embrace, faces buried against each other’s necks. The two human Spectres were content in that moment to remain encapsulated in their own little sliver of space and time. Wrapped up together, where no one dared encroach. At least until some hours after dawn painted the sky from a vibrant, pastel palette.
