What makes this scene even better is how Neil's words leap and bound in lockstep with David. "It's like being at the beach in bare feet!" hops and skips. This sentence is on the move. It alliterates and bounds from beat to beat. It's like being at the beach in bare feet. It's got the fucking iambic pentameter. Neil is galaxy-braining on an inhuman level here.

I am not surprised at all that the moment he wrote this scene was also when he knew that David was the only actor to play Crowley. Just look at his frantic run-don't-walk 10th Doctor. Just look at him trying to levitate like a bouncy jack-in-a-box here. Look at him tap dance to the beat of the script.

I am going to cry, it's so beautiful.

This scene is where vivid writing, spot-on casting, flawless direction, and inhuman acting talent all conspire to move us.

Please come in.” Aziraphale stepped aside with a broad smile and gestured for Crowley to enter. “I have a bottle of something I think you'll rather enjoy.” He always did, just in case. “Ah - thanks, but not tonight. I’m sort of, well I suppose you could say I’m here on business.” Two weeks after the incident with the church bombing and the magic show, Aziraphale can't get Crowley out of his mind. When the demon shows up asking for a favor, Aziraphale may be inclined to help this time. If only he could think of the right thing to say.

It all culminates in the two of them finally coming together backstage in a West End dressing room. “Crowley.” Aziraphale breathed into the space between them, just as an Angel had breathed the stars into the Universe once upon a time. And, exactly like the Universe that he had once helped to create, Crowley came alive with a blinding and all-encompassing passion. “I’ve got you Angel.” He promised. “I’ve got you.”

“You could have been hurt, angel.” Crowley’s voice was near-silent, barely a whisper of a breath. It was too quiet, and it made Aziraphale’s heart sink. It was nothing like the spitfire and cocksure tone of voice that Aziraphale knew Crowley’s confidence to be so flamboyant in; it felt vulnerable, it felt uncomfortable, it felt like crossing a line that they were both too scared to step over. “My – my life was not in the hands of no one whom I did not trust,” Aziraphale responded after several long moments, wringing his hands together behind his back and biting his lip. He didn’t know how to react to this. Crowley did not seem like himself, and it was . . . scary. “I was never in any real danger, because it was you who was holding the gun.”
