Album Review of the Week: Charli XCX Brat + brat and it's completely different but also still brat (2024)
After 2022's "pop star" experiment with Crash, Charli XCX decided to do things her own way with the unapologetic Brat. The album as a whole prances between scathing club beats, synth bass lines, vocal tricks and genuinely vulnerable admissions.
Club classics, Von dutch, B2b, 365 and Spring breakers are the best examples of that break-neck club sound. I especially love the lyricism in the 2nd verse of Spring breakers - describing a bombing of sorts. The delivery is so blasé that it takes a few listens before you realize she says "and I just laugh when the bodies go splat!"
I might say something stupid, So I and I think about it all the time are the most vulnerable of the bunch. It almost feels wrong to comment about the lyricism in the first two as it feels so personal. I really appreciate the vocal delivery on I might say something stupid, it really reels you in to take it seriously. Even though I cannot relate at all, I enjoy listening to I think about it all the time because the melody there is so interesting and especially the humming bit - there is an enchanting whimsy about it.
There are a couple of songs that I did not like very much at first, but now they are a couple of my favorites! When the chorus begins on Sympathy is a knife, that belt is almost euphoric. The production is especially great on this one, the vocals are tinny in a really engaging way. Although it gets quite repetitive in the end, the manic vocal delivery on Everything is romantic is really engaging as well. It seemingly makes no sense, but I can't stop listening!
After Brat took the world by storm, similarly styled billboards started appearing in multiple locations saying simply "caroline polachek" or "ariana grande" in reverse font which sent rumors of a remix album swelling to a fever pitch! Finally, in early October, we got brat and it's completely different but also still brat with remixes and features from a whole bunch of different artists! I really admire that she was able to pull this off, a lot of the artists were already in her circle but we get some new artists pulled into her hyperpop world that typically don't have their voices on top of beats like these! Some of these remixes just have the beats ramped up a little bit with a new artist on verse 2 - however some are completely different songs! It is also interesting because a lot of the new lyrics were written after the original album blew up so we get lyrics like in B2b featuring tinashe that talk about touring the world and finally making it.
Guess featuring billie eilish and Girl, so confusing featuring lorde basically replace the originals. I adore Lorde's verse - the whole song is really honest but her verse is very vulnerable and it was really fun to hear her voice in such a different soundscape. Talk talk featuring troye sivan is in the same boat as well, except the new version is a bit more punched up. I cannot get enough of Troye's vocal delivery when the chorus starts up! An immaculate vibe.
A couple of new versions that I don't really like: Club classics featuring bb trickz has too many elements from 365 rather than the original Club classics, although I do like Bb trickz verse! I might say something stupid featuring the 1975 & jon hopkins sucks out all of the emotion from the original and smushed it into something gray and boring (and is 3x as long as the original while we're at it). While I adore Julian Casablancas' vocals, I just can't get into the Mean girls remix - it takes too many elements away that I love from the original.
At first, I didn't love Everything is romantic featuring caroline polachek, but eventually it did click. While it can never beat the original, Polachek adds a woodsy whimsical vibe and her vocal runs are romantic. Sympathy is a knife featuring ariana grande could never replace the original either, and this new version is completely different - so it can certainly stand on its own. I especially love the giggle when Ariana says "who the f* is she??"
I think about it all the time featuring bon iver was really well done. It lacks the whimsy of the original but transforms into this chill soundscape that doesn't compromise the original message. I really enjoy the opening lyrics that details how quickly the years go by during a cycle of creating/promoting/touring an album.
365 featuring shygirl really punched up the original! 365 doesn't quite hit that manic vibe that it seemed to want to portray, but the remix certainly does it perfectly! The synthy bass runs throughout and gets you moving!
This was an amazing, fully fleshed out album era and I am loving it! I hope it gets some love at the Grammy's - with 7 nominations!

YEAH THAT'S RIGHT WE'RE BACK WE WEREN'T JOKING AROUND NOW GET IN THE CAR BEEP BEEP LET'S RIDE
CHARLI XCX - SPEED DRIVE [5.07]
youtube
Oliver Maier: A dark cloud seems to hang over Charli XCX as of late. Last year's perfectly passable Crash was touted by her as her "sellout" album, and while it charted impressively, it didn't demonstrate the effortless hitmaking that Charli sometimes implies she could pull off any time, if she only felt like it. That success instead has rather randomly gone to the risible "Speed Drive," her first UK top 10 since 2015 and first Billboard entry since a year prior. There's a lot I don't like about it, but enumerating its faults feels futile when it has the baked-in defense of just being a cute song for the Barbie movie!(!!!) Put simply, though, it's lazy to the point of feeling contemptuous. I have far fewer reservations about switching my brain off and having fun with pop when it feels like the artist is laughing with me, not at me. [2]
Alex Ostroff: On Crash, Charli started leaning into obvious interpolations to try to hit the charts. Hopefully, "Speed Drive" is the tail end of that tendency and not her new normal. The mashup of "Hey Mickey" and "Cobrastyle" works significantly better for me than the way she lifted from September and Robin S. for Crash singles, and there are a few excellent line deliveries, but this still feels like Charli on autopilot. The album's worth of unreleased songs with SOPHIE do more exciting and interesting things sonically than this PC-XCX retread, and if she isn't pushing the boundaries of pop music in weird and abrasive new directions, I'd much rather have the hooks and big choruses of "New Shapes" and "Lightning" than an under-two-minute sketch of an idea. The problem, of course, is that Charli on autopilot mashing up Robyn and Toni Basil, but fully committing to the performance and vocal delivery, still ends up giving us a: [6]
Alfred Soto: Charli XCX's reputation as a unsung pop master crumbles every time she releases another middling single. From the "Mickey" lift to the perfunctory rhythm track, "Speed Drive" is closer to assembly line than a Barbie factory. [4]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: The best Charli XCX songs in this lane are cleverly stupid ("Hot in It", "Yuck") or stupidly clever ("No Angel", "Vroom Vroom"), but this is just normal, garden-variety dumb -- less a song and more a collection of Pavlovian cues for stans to go wild over. All points here should be allocated to Easyfun, who at least does his job competently. [3]
Will Rivitz: Crash was Charli's worst release in nearly a decade for more reasons than I can fit in these few sentences, but most salient to "Speed Drive" was the record's uncharacteristically smooth polish. Her music achieves transcendence when it leans into its unsanded edges and hungover hedonism, channeling self-destruction and snottiness into bombast and excess. If it sounds like a first or second draft slapped onto Spotify before it's had the chance to hit a mastering studio, it's succeeded. Crash was too careful to hit those same highs, and as a result, its attempted mess felt lethargic and flat, indulgence as a single drunk cigarette instead of half an Adderall chased with absinthe. So, since "Speed Drive" sounds like it was mastered on a 2015 MacBook speaker and plays its two main interpolations as insouciantly straight as possible, it represents a return to form. Mess is more. [7]
Aaron Bergstrom: A perfectly acceptable Charli-by-numbers exercise: shiny, metallic PC Music production smeared over otherwise kitchy sonic references (and "Cobrastyle," which rules in any context); lyrics referencing cars, Japan, or cars in Japan; halfhearted attempt to tie it all back to Barbie somehow. [5]
Rachel Saywitz: Sonically, "Speed Drive" is one of the more interesting songs from this year's Barbie soundtrack -- unfortunately, that isn't saying much. A flurry of bubbling synth patterns echo the song's title, but what should be an exhilarating digital rush is overset by drab lyrics that sound like they came out of a Mattel exec's secret poetry diary (+ charm bracelet which unlocks the diary + a copy of the 2006 hit Barbie mocap film, The Barbie Diaries): "She my best friend in the whole world / On the mood board, she's the inspo / and she dressed in really cute clothes." Charli is in on the joke, but the joke isn't actually a joke -- it's a corporate branded major studio movie that was made to sell more toys, unable to subvert its maker no matter how many jokes it makes about male CEOs, discontinued toys, and "tax evasion issues." Can we just get Charli to soundtrack one of those poorly animated Barbie movies that know exactly what they are? Can we get a Barbie: The Princess and the Pauper remix album? Oh my god wait that would be incredible Mattel please call me I'll revoke my DSA membership please [5]
Hannah Jocelyn: I am a Barbie movie defender; you take your $100 million toy commercial and make the best possible trans allegory a cis woman can make, you have my respect. (Just as Little Women is the best queer movie a straight woman can make, love ya Greta!) I feel like mainstream feminism-attempting films, Barbie included, are so preoccupied with being Statements they'll sacrifice any momentum to get a message across. This is much less messy and complex than the movie it soundtracks, content to get in and out with its endearingly obvious samples. Charli's attitude makes the song sound more chaotic than it really is, but that effortlessness is a neat contrast to a movie that tries really fucking hard. Suddenly, I want to buy a 2024 Chevy Blazer EV. [7]
Brad Shoup: Like the vast majority of thinkpieces this movie elicited, this isn't really about Barbie, is it? It leaps into a gear and holds; there's nothing to distract you while the motor hums. It ends with Charli chanting "red lights," like she's desperate to pull over. [4]
Andrew Karpan: Perhaps the most important of the pop hits salvaged from an '80s nite at a club near you, "Speed Drive" is already a Greatest Hit among the stans, and justifiably so. Charli boils down what these nostalgia grabs are all about: misrememberences of a more understandable past, the fantasy of driving cars, the mood board stretched infinitely into the promise of a new century, the crux of Barbie itself. [10]
Jonathan Bradley: [A whiteboard with "Charli XCX Barbie soundtrack????" written on it and nothing else.] [3]
Wayne Weizhen Zhang: Even on this throwaway soundtrack cut where Charli sounds like she's putting in 25%, her pop flourishes and mannerisms are undeniably powerful. It's the way she rhymes "whole world" with "inspo", knowing it doesn't work; the way she races through the chorus like she's bored and speed-reading random words on a page; the way she robotically drones "Li-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-ghts," unbothered at the laziness of the hook. This can't even clock in at two minutes. Give us nothing, queen! [7]
Kayla Beardslee: Charli understands how to craft a hook better than 99.99% of all musicians that have ever existed. [7]
Dorian Sinclair: I would not have thought to combine "Hey Mickey" with Robyn's "Cobrastyle" at all, let alone as part of a massive Mattel movie. Perhaps this is why Charli XCX is a pop star and I decidedly am not. The result mostly works, though it feels a bit less than the sum of its parts. And while I don't entirely get the focus on the car, maybe it's so she can run it back for the Hot Wheels film? [6]
Peter Ryan: Pop's foremost interpolator doubles down for a truly inspired how-hasn't-this-been-done moment. As a chase scene backdrop it's an [8], but on its own it's not even her third-best car tune. [5]
Katherine St Asaph: Brainless, reckless fun utterly unfit for purpose. The song is called "Speed Drive" and is perfect in tempo and stupidity for racing down the highway faster than God intended. And Charli still interjects "hah!" like no one else. But when do you go on the highway? When you're planning on driving for more than 2 minutes! [6]
Jeffrey Brister: Sleekly built, moves quick without fuss, pushes up a bit, but never really crests into high gear. I'm not asking for transcendence, but maybe an acknowledgement of a higher power while you lightly tap the gas pedal? [5]
Edward Okulicz: Having stopped writing good Charli XCX songs years ago, Charli XCX has, with this, ceased to even sound like Charli XCX. The only good bit about this is the "Mickey" interpolation. Driving around with this would give me a headache within about two miles. [2]
Vikram Joseph: In which Charli decides to write an AI version of a Charli song before the machines get there first. [4]
Will Adams: I will own up to being one of those who were WRONG and DUMB about "Vroom Vroom" when it first came out; I still wouldn't rate it highly, but I recognize its importance and impact on pop music. Special thanks to "Speed Drive" for helping me through that process by demonstrating what "Vroom Vroom" would sound like if there were significantly less effort. [3]
Jibril Yassin: Sucker needed this more than we did, but I'll take any new Charli songs that use actual choruses again. [8]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: I applaud Charli for staying faithful to "Hey Mickey": the only good thing here is the hook. [3]
Crystal Leww: Funniest thing about this song is that one of my best friends in the whole world made an edit of it, and once we were out, the original played and I was like, "man this is so slow." And then she told me that the BPMs are actually exactly the same. Good song for Charli in her popstar elder era, but I'd always rather be listening to the edit. [5]
Michelle Myers: This would have been a fine addition to my 2009 pre-gaming playlist. I can taste the Smirnoff Ice and MAC Lip Gloss. [6]
Samson Savill de Jong: This is a banger that resists much discussion, just pounding you with being really really good and fun and HOT (but not, funnily, at all sexy). It needs a third verse, as it's over just as it really gets going, but ultimately probably better to leave you wanting more than wishing it was over -- though I find it hard to imagine this couldn't have stretched all the way to 3 minutes. [8]
Ian Mathers: It's good, but I've gotta knock it for three things (all possibly totally unfair, but that's the Jukebox babey!!!!!): 1. "Mickey" is a fine song but I am so sick of this kind of interpolation; 2. it reminds me at least by implication of "Vroom Vroom," and you, ma'am, are no "Vroom Vroom"; 3. it's only my second favourite 2023 soundtrack Charli XCX is featured on. [6]
Leah Isobel: Enough time has passed that we can admit Crash was mid, right? That in marking the moment in which Charli finally, actually committed to being a pop star, it also signaled her turn from real emotion to two-dimensional shtick? That her fanbase not only enabled this particular turn, but made it her only viable option? That her career is now defined by the need to please a group of people who treat her work as impersonal meme-bait instead of creative output from a real person? That, viewed in this light, the fact that "Speed Drive" has become her biggest hit in a decade makes perfect sense, even though it's the unsatisfying sonic equivalent of a single leftover french fry, drenched in grease? That pop stardom is, in itself, the reduction of a real personality and perspective into a flat and marketable image; that the aching, sincere heart of True Romance is actually dead and buried; that my youth is never coming back; that all I have left is this shitty, misogynistic world? And that, despite everything, I am physically and emotionally incapable of scoring a Charli XCX song that samples fucking "Cobrastyle" lower than this? [4]
Tara Hillegeist: It says a great deal about Charli's grasp on how to make hedonistic abandon actually catchy, even after the multiple ways that particular approach to imperial phases has shown their ass, that she can nearly faceplant on a still-mangled enunciation of "kawaii" and yet almost get away scot-free with her brazen interpolation of "Hey Mickey." I can yet imagine this scoring a campily villainous dance number in a Russel T. Davies SFnal dramedy on BBC Three and working. Sadly, Rusty's currently on contract to Disney instead, so an entirely different sort of Toymaker seems to have run off with the obvious bait for tiresome queens at present, and I'm not sure the vibe quite comes together as the prophecy was meant to foresee. Too bad. It'd be an [8] if it did, but only hypothetically. [3]
Nortey Dowuona: The problem with "Speed Drive" isn't the flat, pedestrian drum programming, even though that roots the song to the ground and never lets it become the exciting driving song it's meant to be. The problem is Charli constantly pushing forward in her music to embrace the more compelling and vivid music of the late '10s, only to be over-praised for a competent rehash of already marked territory by her elders. The same happened to Earl Sweatshirt, who doubled back to play in more conventional positions then, after the praise, re-doubled down on his direction. The way to engage with their music is to stop jumping up to beg them to pander to our changing taste and the industry's desire to cling to conventional wisdom. Let the Charli XCX of 2014 go -- she doesn't exist anymore, Charli's competent Toni Basil cover notwithstanding. Maybe actually trust them to chart their own paths -- you crafted your own, right? [6]
Frank Falisi: The streamlining of Charli's glitch-heat into soundtrack-ready radio-licking songs is good! PC Music was always a project about products, caring and careful as it was. Pop is a product about the project of being alive -- it's its own experimentation, it doesn't require archness. But to be alive is to seek out live wires and hearts to plug into, to give shape to. The pastiche that has haunted Charli's work in recent years takes as its engine dead objects: nostalgia (Crash), flippancy ("Hot Girl", Bottoms), and now, incorporation (Barbie). Can you feel a song begin to think of itself as servicing an occasion instead of a feeling? But you don't have to rope in career tea-leafing to know "Speed Drive" is plain boring. More like a treatment for a song than a composition moving through ideas, it cannibalizes the occasion of "Vroom Vroom" for a compensatory GM tie-in, settling for chorus as brand shoutout and production that's nearly apologizing for itself. Haters -- Lovers? Likers? I can't imagine a human being loving this song -- will tell me it's a fun, short song written for a fun movie that's been over-think-pieced and that doesn't deserve the hyper-scrutiny it received. I still think we deserve better than just "just" as far as the product-as-art future Barbie takes to be inevitable. I also think -- whatever their occasion -- all the song sequences in the film felt disposably-conceived, thinking a little of partnering with the image and thinking a lot about servicing the partner, which is the brand. Maybe pop music in cinematic space has always been product placement of a kind. Or worse, once it was a way to show love through intertextuality and now it's the moving image as Tumblr page, a cloud of association, a hungry rolodex of fits. And the suggestion of a pleasurable essence isn't the presence of pleasure. I know there's no purity, I don't want purity. But you have to let "want" in, have to want "want" to mean more than "get." Otherwise it's the experimental rendered in a language we already know. What I mean is: every day the inclusion of "Boom Clap" in The Fault in Our Stars feels surer. [2]

Discovering the BTS World OST
Tumblr media
Speaking of OSTs, @lokisasylum inspired me to check out the BTS World OST today. BTS World was a mobile video game published in 2019. Apparently you role play as a BTS Manager. Did anyone play it?
Tumblr media
The members all had different characters. The hyung line were all university students: RM was studying creative writing, Jin was working as a hotel intern, Suga was a pianist and J-Hope was studying to be a vet. The maknae line were all still at high school.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the first time I have listened to Heartbeat and despite being produced for a video game it manages to retain a clear BTS feel. The intro by V is particularly memorable as is the rapping section that RM carries. The imagery is first class. I have to say they were all looking mighty fine back in 2019.
youtube
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also checked out some of the other songs from the OST. A Brand New Day with J-Hope, V and Zara Larsson.
youtube
All Night with RM, Suga and Juice World.
youtube
I was already familiar with Dream Glow with Charli XCX because when I first got into BTS (and let's face even today) I was blown away every time Jungkook and Jimin sang together and I sought out all their songs on Spotify and SoundCloud.
youtube
Their version of We don't talk anymore with Jungkook's breathy delivery and Jimin's clear expression of emotions. It all hits much harder than the original song.
In WHO, when Jimin sings "When the morning comes you're still in my bed, But it's so so cold", it curls my toes every single time.
youtube
I have to say it's not looking good for any more jikook duets in the near future. We will have to be content with the little snatches of them harmonizing in Letter the beautiful hidden song on FACE.
youtube
Tumblr media
I really hope the time will come, maybe after military service, when we get another duet from these two talented, hard-working and stunning human beings.

born in the charming and culturally rich city of khon kaen to a well-to-do family who had a great standing in the community, it was said that holly had stars in her eyes from the very beginning. maybe it was toddling around after her father on film studio visits and being doted on by thailand’s biggest celebrities, or perhaps it was the jam sessions she’d had with her brother in their playroom, spawned from his very early interest in music.
regardless, the small girl had big dreams, and the means with which to follow them. she was quite privileged, but she was also appreciative. she knew never to take her circumstances for granted, for it could all be gone in an instant.
holly had a fondness for dance, utilizing any free time she had in her heavily scheduled childhood to simply leap around her room rhythmically to her favorite music. she had some natural ability, but it was nothing compared to what she wanted to possess. after a bit of pleading to drop some of her less favored activities and some well-reasoned convincing from her mother to her father, she was able to start dance classes.
while training in dance, holly discovered an all encompassing love for music in general. there’d be days in her classes where some students would get to sing or play instruments while the others danced in elaborate practice performances. it was the most fun she’d had outside of the impromptu concerts put on with her brother.
she caught word that one of the girls in her dance class would soon be embarking to south korea in hopes of auditioning for an idol company, and a dream of her own began to take form. becoming a fierce, confident idol? it seemed too good to be true, but holly’s ambitions didn’t know sleep. her mother was as supportive as she always had been about it, but her father was understandably weary about his wife and daughter moving to another country. still, even he couldn’t deny holly’s dedication to the idea and his wife’s willingness to uproot her own life and business for their daughter’s dream. it didn’t help that holly’s sad eyes were a bit much to withstand, so he finally gave in to the master plan.
the transition to seoul was hectic and there was a ton of paperwork involved, especially as it pertained to transferring holly to hanlim arts high school to finish out her schooling. she and her mother moved into an apartment in songpa-gu, and for the first time, holly took the time to realize just what was happening. her family believed in her to the point that they had sacrificed so much; she couldn’t help but feel a bit guilty, but it also impassioned her to push on until she achieved what she was after.
it didn’t take long before she was signed on as a trainee for new star entertainment, given her endearing look and intense persistence. she always gave her all when completing any task they assigned her, and kept her head down for the most part; she did not want to make a fuss or catch the ire of any of her fellow exhausted and hungry trainees. she earned a reputation in the company of being quite easy to work with and open to direction and critique.
they’d begun training her in something completely different than she’d expected in the form of rapping, but she supposed it was understandable for new star to want their idols to be all-rounders. besides, it was actually quite fun learning the skill and she’d come to find her voice was well suited for the medium.
she was eventually informed that she would be among the lineup for the company’s new girl group flora, but when her position was announced, holly was slightly confused. she was chosen as the group’s main rapper, which was a bit blindsiding. the recent rapping training suddenly made a lot more sense, but holly couldn’t help but feel nerves take hold of her. what if the group flopped because of her lack of experience in rapping? what if she ruined a golden opportunity for four other hardworking women? but she couldn’t let herself lapse into that negative spiral; no, she’d push through it with poise...she had to. it wasn’t just her dream at stake, anymore.
once the group began practicing together, holly felt a bit more natural in the role of main rapper. she injected a bit of playful attitude into their rehearsals and with amazing moral support from the rest of flora, she was beginning to feel like she belonged. finally, it was time for the lineup to be announced, and new star did it with pride.
there was a bit of backlash initially, as many watchful fans of the trainee group felt that the lead rapper deserved flora’s main rapper position instead of holly. there was even some discussion that holly didn’t fit flora’s concept at all, and shouldn’t have been in the final lineup. when her dance origins were dug up by fans, some less than reputable news sources painted holly as a jealous backstabber harboring the belief that she should have gotten the main dancer spot.
it went without saying that holly didn’t really know how to handle all of this. she was genuinely excited, albeit nervous about her new path as a rapper and despised any sort of drama or confrontation, and it wasn’t as though she wouldn’t get to flex her dancing muscle in the group’s performances. she’d known how unforgiving the industry could be, but it was difficult to prepare for just how many false narratives people would create around her. the support of her mother was paramount during this time, and rather than let the gossip swallow her up, she crested the wave and soldiered on toward the shore.
once flora actually debuted, a lot of the criticisms people had about holly fell away. her determination could be felt on stage, warm comradery with the other members of the group was palpable, and people were finally seeing the reality that she herself had always envisioned. of course, there’d always be antis and outliers dredging up old fake drama, but the toxicity lessened considerably over time.
about to celebrate their 9th anniversary, flora has undergone many evolutions over the years, as have the members themselves. always the cheerful, determined one, holly now must wonder if 11 years in the industry has cracked that happy, picture perfect visage of hers. and perhaps, at age 26, she does smile a little less and sleep in a little more. maybe she doesn’t pose as long for the paparazzi when she gets off a plane. perhaps the nasty social media comments cut a little deeper now. maybe this type of career has a shelf life, and holly is nearing the end of it... but what does that mean for someone with a crushing amount of determination and an intense fear of letting down the people around her? she’s still figuring that out.
♡     ◞       𝑬𝑿𝑻𝑹𝑨 ,   𝗍𝗁𝖾 𝗁𝖾𝖺𝖽𝖼𝖺𝗇𝗈𝗇𝗌 .
she took a hiatus in 2020 due to a tendon tear in her ankle that required surgery to repair. since then she’s been forced to take it easier on the dancing outside of practice, which is actually quite devastating to her.
the silver lining of her injury is that she’s discovered a fondness for swimming, which was suggested to her by a doctor for low impact exercise. it’s quite freeing floating atop an expanse of water, and it’s made her dead set on retiring in a place by the ocean.
she’s been burned so many times in the romance department. more than once she’s been told she’s someone’s everything when she’s really just their dirty little secret while they’re with somebody else in the public eye. it’s been rather taxing and made her quite weary in matters of the heart. she finds dashing actors to be the worst offenders.
she’s still incredibly close with her brother, who is also pursuing music professionally back in thailand. he’s the lead singer of a punk band called sanamdeklen, and recently toured australia with them.
about two years after holly debuted with flora, her mother felt comfortable enough to move back home to thailand, as she knew the group was a success & her daughter could now take care of herself.

(re: send me a character) bernard dowd and/or the lil tdp dude i keep seeing everywhere since the sdcc panel LMAO (i think his name is callum??? pls forgive if im wrong /o\)
Hi! Because I love these two so much. I'mma do both!
Bernard Dowd
Favorite thing about them:
He's a superhero Conspiracy theorist and that is insane to me! Like, that is such a good idea for a character and should be used to its full potential.
Least favorite thing about them:
Surface-level, he is the embodiment of white bread, especially with his current characterization
Favorite line:
Oooo, this one's a no-brainer:
"It's perfect and I love it, flaws and all. It was definitely worth the wait." -- "Special Delivery" by Travis Moore, DC Pride 2022
(Like he's talking about the cake, but also he's not talking about the cake-)
brOTP:
Darla/Laura for the obvious besties in high school
Steph for besties that bully Tim (affectionately)
OTP:
Gee I don't know... TIMBER OF COURSE
(Although I do ship timberkon and konnard on the side 😏)
nOTP:
Darla/Bernard: I really think their strongest dynamic is their friendship.
Random headcanon:
He's friends with Jay Nakamura online. They met through a government conspiracy forum.
Unpopular opinion:
I'm not sure if this is unpopular or not but I think his characterization is weakest when he's written by Fitzmartin??? Sorry??? (I honestly think Travis Moore is his best writer yet)
Song I associate with them:
Yasutaka Nakata - Crazy Crazy (feat. Charli XCX and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu)
Favorite picture of them:
Tumblr media
It's just so tender. He's so in love 🥺...
Callum
Favorite thing about them:
He's the biggest fucking dork and I love it.
Least favorite thing about them:
Don't really have anything for this one
Favorite line:
"You're smart, and fast, and beautiful. Rayla, you're the most amazing person I've ever met." -- 3x4 "The Midnight Desert"
He's such a romantic that he doesn't even know he's in love with her yet-
brOTP:
Callum and Ezran! I love their dynamic as brothers
Callum and Soren as frenemies to big brother figure that affectionately bullies the younger one
OTP:
RAYLLUM! RAYLLUM! RAYLLUM! (Rayla and Callum)
nOTP:
Claudia and Callum (but I'm fine with it as a crush)
Random headcanon:
When he gets really into something he gets into it. Like nose in a spell book and forgets to eat or sleep until someone makes him.
Unpopular opinion:
I don't think him learning every Arcanum will make the show too similar to ATLA.
Song I associate with them:
Simple Plan - I'm Just a Kid
(probably too on the nose but it's the first thing I thought of ahshsj-)
Favorite picture of them:
Tumblr media
He is a serious artist 😤

taste-in-music’s top 30 songs of 2021
Tumblr media
Hey everyone! This list will go over my favorite songs of 2021. I love all these songs a lot, so consider the order to be mostly arbitrary until we get to the top 10 or so. My only limit is one song per project, and thirty songs total. I may or may not make an album/EP wrap-up later on, I’ll have to see. Now then, let’s get started!
Spinning by No Rome ft. Charli XCX and The 1975: Looking at the star-studded guest list, I had no idea what to expect going into “Spinning.” Much like its title suggests, the song builds an instrumental of electrifying, looping vocal samples that swarm and coalesce into a boisterous beat. The result is a giddying, playful slice of electronic pop where each artist gets their own moment to shine.
Toast With The Butter by Blu DeTiger: Singer and bassist Blu DeTiger broke onto my radar last year with a catalog of groovy, self assured, disco-tinged pop singles. In 2021 she dropped the EP How Did We Get Here?, and of all the songs on that project, “Toast With The Butter” became my favorite. The song swoons as much as it struts, DeTiger picturing a perfect morning after a night with her lover. And, of course, the bass line slaps.
Punching Bag By Wallice: “Punching Bag” conquered my Summer playlists with its warm, breezy atmosphere. But underneath the sunny exterior is a relationship rife with insecurity and one-sided affection. “Emotionally available in my dreams / I'm bored and down for anything,” Wallice sings, her blasé delivery a cover for the angst within. It’s an uplifting gut punch, very fitting of 2021.
F.U.C.K. by Victoria Monét: Victoria Monét is the latest of artists to participate in the tradition of cheeky acronyms in pop music, and she’s a welcome entry to the list. “F.U.C.K.” is effortlessly bliss to the ears, Monét’s vocals and the production firing sensuality at all cylinders. It’s one of the sexiest songs of the year, hands down.
Before You Gotta Go by Courtney Barnett: I had the pleasure of seeing Courtney Barnett live this year. “Before You Gotta Go” ended the set, and it brought the whole venue to its feet. Barnett’s conversational vocals and pleading lyrics take on a new level of intensity as the underlying rock rollick blossoms into the final chorus. It’s one of the most instantly likeable rock cuts 2021 had to offer.
Push It Down by Taylor Janzen: Speaking of seeing artists live, I had the chance to watch Taylor Janzen from the barricade during Lollapalooza. Man does she deserve way more recognition. If you’re looking to get into her music, “Push It Down” is a great place to start. It’s one of her most upbeat songs without sacrificing the emotional authenticity that makes her music so special. I hope she drops an EP or album in the coming year.
Chinatown by Bleachers ft. Bruce Springsteen: They say to never meet your heroes, but sometimes it ends up working out. Jack Antonoff has been channeling stadium-rocking Springsteen energy since his earliest work with Bleachers. On “Chinatown” Antonoff doesn’t just emulate Springsteen, he gets to welcome him along for the ride. The way Springsteen’s vocals kick in around the halfway point of the song results in full-body chills with each repeated spin.
GLAM! by Allie X: Allie X released this song after many years of keeping it in the vault. "GLAM!” is the best kind of in-your-face pop. From the opening stings of shining synths to the soaring “woahs” to the lovestuck lyrics, it’s a dizzying whirlwind of glee and relentless optimism. After sitting in the reserves for all these years, it’s clear that the song is a real treasure that deserved to be dug up.
sex is good (but have you tried?) by Donna Missal: If it’s my list, then Donna Missal will be on it no matter what. In 2021 Missal’s sound took a pivot as she began to collaborate with producer Sega Bodega. She left the rawer rock palette of her 2020 album Lighter in the rearview and took a turn towards slippery, subdued tracks with a hyperpop style sheen. “sex is good (but have you tried?)” takes the term self-love literally, with Missal singing of finding fulfilment all on her own. Within the genre turn, she sounds just as self assured as ever.
t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l by WILLOW ft. Travis Barker: It’s official. The 2000s resurgence is here. We’ve been drip fed up until this point, (take the Britney Spears-tinged nu metal on last year’s SAWAYAMA or the early internet aesthetics of 100 gecs,) but in 2021, Willow Smith fully kicked down the door. Enter “t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l,” the lead single off Smith’s pop punk throwback EP lately i feel EVERYTHING. Much like the title of the EP suggests, “t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l” is whirlwind of emotion, with Smith belting her heart out and Travis Barker absolutely shredding up on the drums. Barker has lent his talents to several emerging artists bent on bringing pop punk back to the mainstream, but there’s no doubt that out of all of them Smith is leading the charge.
Marigold by Jelani Aryeh: On “Marigold,” Jelani Aryeah offers one of the most cleverly penned indie pop gems of the year. Just take the first verse, all a flurry of alliteration and internal rhyme in reverence of a sun god, (it makes my little poet's heart sing whenever I hear it.) But that doesn’t mean the song is inaccessible in any way. In fact, it’s one of the most instantly likeable songs of the year. The production is bright, bouncy, and danceable, perfect for a Summer hangout.
hangar by 8485: Every year there’s that one song that comes out of nowhere and completely consumes your listening. Hailing from the second EP of pop outfit 8485, “hangar” oozes effortless charm. Taking a slight turn from the nightcore-tinged glitchiness that put her on the map, the vibe 84845 concocts on “hangar” is blissful, heartsick teenage angst, with vocals glistening against the misty yet sparkling soundscape of synths. The consuming storm of a first love can be hard to translate, but 8485 wraps it all up with ease: “...nothing feels as urgent / And these nights are still important / And there's still a lot I haven't put into words yet.” If that’s the case, I hope 8485 has more to say in the future.
The Only Heartbreaker by Mitski: For the recent singles in anticipation of her sixth album Laurel Hell, due in February, Mitski took a turn towards slick, 80s oriented synth pop. The move is a welcome surprise, not because it came out of nowhere, (who could forget the disco influence on 2018’s “Nobody,” or her swooning feature on “Susie Save Your Love” by Allie X?) but because after years warping her signature indie rock angst in every direction, the next logical place to take it is the dancefloor. “The Only Heartbreaker” is one part “Take On Me” by Ah-ha, one part “Dancing on My Own” by Robyn, and one part something only Mitski can deliver, breaking hearts as she goes.
Hush by The Marías: With their duo of Superclean EPs, The Marías put themselves on the map with woozy, Latin-infused dream pop. For their debut album CINEMA, they decided to venture into the dark. “Hush” is instantly captivating, a pulsating groove of squirming bass and bubbling synths. It all provides a nice contrast to frontwoman María Zardoya’s fluttery yet effortlessly assured vocals telling off those that feel the need to comment on her without invitation. If there’s anything “Hush” proves it’s that sometimes it’s best to hush up and let a song pull you into its depths.
Anthony Kiedis by Remi Wolf: On her debut album Juno, Remi Wolf perfects balancing strange, whimsical soundscapes and undeniable earworms, all undercut with a shot of genuine emotion. The title may be a Red Hot Chili Peppers homage, but the song is Wolf’s alone. “Anthony Kiedis” is a quirky frolic through Remi Wolf’s colorful wonderland, and into her mindspace as well. The song starts with the line that encapsulates the isolation and hopelessness many felt over the past few years: “Everything's shut down, yeah / And I don't have friends anymore.” But the buoyant beat, sing-along “na na na”s on the chorus, and Wolf’s witty writing keep total despair at bay.
Apple Crumble by Lime Cordiale ft. Idris Elba: Who knew Idris Elba could sing? I suppose it didn’t come out of nowhere. He was in Cats after all. He also has two albums under his belt and has been DJ-ing for years. But “Apple Crumble” comes off as much more than a super star’s vanity project. Elba contributes a charismatic performance over a jaunty beat supplied by Australian duo Lime Cordiale, and the chorus is one of the most memorable of the year. Good news then that they’re dropping a mini album together on January 14th.
The Feels by TWICE: Over the past few months, my brain has been reduced to nothing but a never-ending loop of the chorus of “The Feels” by K-pop supergroup TWICE. And you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way. “The Feels” is a jubilantly sweet slice of dance-pop about getting caught in a whirlwind romance, so likeable and catchy in its execution that I can’t think of a single critique I could make of it. When that chorus hits, you won’t be able to deny it either. By the end of the first listen it’ll fully have stolen your heart.
Like I Used To by Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olson: 2021 was a purgatorial year. The impact of the pandemic still lingers, but there’s also this overwhelming urge to “get back to normal” and return to old routines. “Like I Used To” is a potent encapsulation of those feelings coming from two of indie rock’s most consistent stars. At this point in their careers, both Van Etten and Olson have made their bread and butter off of combining the emotional with the anthemic. Put them together and their voices soar, forming a chorus so fist-pumpingly catchy and heartfelt it’d make Bruce Springstein blush.
Gasoline by HAIM ft. Taylor Swift: “Gasoline” was initially released on HAIM’s 2020 album Women In Music Pt. III. However, it was with the release of the remix in 2021 that I fell head over heels in love, to the extent that it became my fourth most listened to song of the year. The vibe of “Gasoline” is jaunty yet languid, content yet conflicted. The instrumental strut is set against lyrics about a relationship full of issues and bliss alike. Most importantly, Taylor Swift shines as a feature. She lets loose, her voice taking on a confident bombast and flair that results in one of the best performances of her whole career.
This Enchanted by Hatchie: In 2021 Hatchie switched labels, but that doesn’t mean she switched up her sound. “This Enchanted,” her first solo release in two years, shows Hatchie returning to the shoegaze-y dream pop that put her on the map, but refining it even more into something truly special. The song swarms with sugar-sweet synths, drenched in reverb and building on top of one another. The relationship Hatchie describes is enthralling, washing over her in waves. Hatchie has made an entire career off of tapping into the blissed-out delight that can only be found on the dancefloor. For “This Enchanted,” she doesn’t just tap the well, she opens the floodgates and lets the euphoria flow.
Girlfriend by Rebecca Black: At this point in her career, the instinct to introduce Rebecca Black through her notorious Internet smash “Friday,” is ludicrous. It’s clear that Black has an appreciation for her past, (her hyperpop remix from this year in celebration of “Friday”’s 10 year anniversary was a fun turn,) but it’s her future as an artist that’s even more exciting. Take “Girlfriend,” the first single from her EP Rebecca Black Was Here. In a project full of glitchy experimentation, “Girlfriend” seems almost too simple, a synthpop cut about Black reuniting with an ex. But who said simple had to mean bland? “Girlfriend” is simple, but it’s also effortless, pristine, and wholly self-assured. Black’s ventures into the hyperpop sphere are welcome, but on “Girlfriend” she proves without a shadow of a doubt that she knows her way around more classic fare as well. Who knows where Black’s future career will go, but if “Girlfriend” is anything to go by, she’s here to stay.
FaceTime with my Mom (Tonight) by Bo Burnham: Bo Burnham has always tinkered with blending comedy and music in his stand-up routines. For his hit Netflix special Inside, made entirely in quarantine, Burnham wasn’t tethered to live performance anymore. This allowed his songs to take on more fleshed out production and immersive aesthetics. There are several strong contenders for this list, but it was “FaceTime with my Mom (Tonight)” that I returned to throughout the year. One of the themes Burnham explores in his comedy is how technology connects us, for better or for worse. “FaceTime with my Mom (Tonight)” wraps up the struggles of maintaining relationships through a screen with poignancy and relatable wit, all in two minutes and twenty seconds, and over a groovy synth pop beat to boot.
Pain by PinkPantheress: Out of all the newcomers to emerge in 2021, PinkPantheress was by far the most enigmatic and intriguing. By the time her debut album dropped, just five months after her first single, she had amassed over nearly 100 million streams on Spotify. “Pain” clocks in at just over a minute and half and PinkPantheress makes every second of it count. The song is pure concentrated earworm-y goodness, a slithery yet sugar-sweet treat made of silky vocals set against a spaced out beat. By the time the slowed-down outro kicks in you’ll already be clicking the replay button for another hit.
Mr. Perfectly Fine by Taylor Swift: The rerecording of Fearless saw Taylor Swift revisiting the album that catapulted her to stardom. While the majority of the project consisted of hyper-faithful recreations, we also got some new goodies to enjoy. Enter “Mr. Perfectly Fine,” the second vault track on the album and the country-pop banger of the year. The lyrics tear into an ex that’s moved on too easily while the narrator wallows in post-breakup blues, but the warm production courtesy of Jack Antonoff gives buoyancy to the bitterness. “Mr. Perfectly Fine” is many things, but most of all it’s yet another demonstration of how well a nineteen-year-old Taylor Swift knew her way around blending relatable teen heartbreak with an unforgettable hook, and how well a thirty-one-year-old Taylor Swift can take those emotions and make them wholly her own.
Male Fantasy by Billie Eilish: Billie Eilish took over the pop scene with immediately catchy hooks and in-your-face, nightmarish imagery. For her follow-up, Happier Than Ever, the approach was much more subtle. The demons Eilish wrestles with aren’t found under your bed, but those found within. “Male Fantasy” is one of her most restrained cuts yet, an elegant ballad where Eilish’s cooing vocals skate over a simple plucked guitar. Eilish discusses the anxieties of womanhood and growing up, pressures that I’m sure are only exacerbated by living in the public eye. But the emotions on “Male Fantasy” are relatable whether you’re famous or not. Eilish sings of leaving friends and foes alike in the past, ultimately settling on an empathetic gaze to the rearview. “Can't get over you / No matter what I do / I know I should, but I could never hate you,” Eilish sings. After an album so fraught with strife and heartache, it’s a powerful closing statement.
Show Up by Samia: It was interesting to see how Samia would follow up her excellent 2020 debut The Baby, a project that explored the whirlwind emotions that come with growing up. “Show Up,” the first single off her 2021 EP Scout, traces similar ground. The lyrics are equally earnest and apprehensive, a lament about not wanting to let your loved ones down. “No good intention is ever good enough / To feel like I've done nothing wrong” Samia sings. But what exhibits a step forward in Samia’s artistry is the production. The song blossoms with fuzzed-out synths, spacey drums, and a final chorus anthemic enough to shout from the rooftops: “Nothing could ever stop my ass from showing up / To sing another song for the people I love.” I, for one, hope that Samia keeps showing up to sing even more songs too.
The Walls Are Way Too Thin by Holly Humberstone: Spending time living alone in a tiny London apartment, Holly Humberstone felt lonely, claustrophobic, and anxious. She decided to make a song encompassing all of those emotions, and the result was one of the most likable pop tunes the year had to offer. The lyrics recount simultaneous isolation and overexposure, the involuntary voyeurism that comes with hearing the lives of others through the walls, but sets it against an uptempo beat that keeps the song chugging forward. No matter your emotional state, “The Walls Are Way Too Thin” suits them all, and demands countless spins in the process.
Jackie by Yves Tumor: Listening to “Jackie” by Yves Tumor feels like being burned alive, and I mean that in the best way possible. On their 2020 album Heaven To A Tortured Mind, Tumor demonstrated just how well they could combine torment and rapture, consuming pain and euphoric catharsis. “Jackie” is very much cut from the same cloth, a heartsick lament of fuzzed-out, glammy psychedelic rock so hot it’ll make you break out into a sweat. It’s a song that beckons you to lean into the pain a little, scream it to the heavens, let it consume you. It might just get reborn into something beautiful.
Last Day On Earth by beabadoobee: “Last Day On Earth” by beabadoobee is good in a way that’s hard to pinpoint. It just is. Maybe it’s the unapologetic nostalgia of the production, the sing-along chorus of nothing but “shoop doo doobadoo,” “yeah,” and “la la,” or beabadoobee’s delivery that’s so joyous you can almost hear her smiling behind the microphone. But “Last Day On Earth” hits a bit deeper than even all of that. With the lingering presence of the pandemic in our lives and an overall tumultuous political and social climate, it’s nice to hear a song where someone can face down all their troubles with a grin and have the guts to keep going, even if it could all end at any moment.
Be Sweet by Japanese Breakfast: For the debut single from her third album Jubilee, Japanese Breakfast a.k.a. Michelle Zauner lived up to the promise of that title. She took a 180 turn from the moody indie rock that put her on the map and dove head-first into pop. From the shoegaze-y synth stings to the rattling beat to Zauner’s elated vocals, “Be Sweet” is a joyous romp that radiates  sheer warmth and joy. “Be Sweet” is frothy fun, but that doesn’t mean it’s fluff all the way down. Zauner sings of a lying lover and begs for them to make it up to her. The best kind of pop knows that there’s got to be substance to a hook for it to really stick, and “Be Sweet” passes that test with flying colors. It was the song of the spring, summer, fall, and undoubtedly will live on through this winter as well. By that logic, it’s also the song of the year.
Here are some songs I loved this year that didn’t come out in 2021: “Mercy Street” by Peter Gabriel, “Miss You 2″ by Gabrielle Aplin ft. Nina Nesbitt, “Paul” by Big Thief, “Free The Frail” by JPEGMAFIA ft. Helena Deland, “Everyone Knows” by Loviet, and “Cut Me” by Moses Sumney.
Whether you liked, reblogged, or commented on a post, sent me an ask, or interacted with this blog, thank you so much for all the support throughout the year! I can’t express how much I appreciate it.
What were your favorite songs from this year? Did I miss anything? Send me an ask and let me know. I’ll tell you my thoughts, or put it on my to-listen-to list if I haven’t heard them.
I can’t believe the year went by so quickly. Here’s to a safe, healthy 2022 for all of you!

Top 10 Albums of 2020
Hey! I wanted to compile my top 10 albums this year. Check them out.
10. Higher Power - “27 Feet Underwater”
Tumblr media
This album is just so fun. It’s everything good and bad from the late 90′s and early 00′s alternative grunge and post grunge and not corny at all. Makes me want to mosh ASAP. One of the two or three shows I saw this year. Fingers crossed it will not be the last.
9. The 1975 - “Notes on a Conditional Form”
Tumblr media
So probably not the best from these guys but some of my favorite tracks from them. “Me and You Together Song” was my most played song of 2020 and “Fragile State of Mind” really helped me out this year. It’s a bit long but if you keep listening to this album you will find a lot of great things. There’s tons of sounds on hear: garage, emo, folk, Britpop, screamo, and probably more.
8. Hum - “Inlet”
Tumblr media
I don’t have to much to say about this one. If you like Hum, you’ll like this album. Comeback albums are really hard and Hum achieved the impossible. For fans of 90′s rock and shoegaze.
7. Charli XCX - “how i’m feeling now”
Tumblr media
I have never listened to Charli before and this was a crazy introduction. I had no idea what I was getting myself into and the first track through me off but this is some of the pop of this era. Need to do a deep dive still.
6. Hot Mulligan - “you’ll be fine”
Tumblr media
This band was a delightful surprise this year. Only hearing them in passing and never really dug that much. Just seemed like generic pop punk that I heard before but this album is amazing and got A LOT of spins this year. I would say for fans of The Hotelier. Poppy punk mixed with mid western emo and hilarious song titles. Gave me some nostalgia I needed to stay sane this year.
5. fish narc - “WiLDFiRE”
Tumblr media
So ready here’s controversial opinion: this is better than that MGK record. If you like that record (I enjoyed it as well) you may like this but there’s better songwriting, more diverse tracks, and a better vibe overall on WiLDFiRE. Narc has been doing production for all of GBC (Wicca Phase, Cold Hart, Lil Peep) and finally has this stand out record of the genre.
4. The Lawrence Arms - “Skeleton Coast”
Tumblr media
The Lawrence Arms are one of most underrated bands of the style of punk they pump out. I really don’t know why the fans of the Menzingers, Gaslight Anthem, Against Me, etc. doesn’t eat this band up as they should. So yeah, they wrote an album about being alone at the end of world and what’s more 2020 than that.
3. Bartees Strange - “Live Forever”
Tumblr media
This album is some next level shit. I can’t even describe it really. It’s like Bloc Party/Title Fight alt rock with swagger vocal delivery of some hip hop. A lot of comparisons to TV on Radio in what I’ve read. The latter half has some great acoustic folk songs and it’s just fucking sick. And this thing is a vibe.
2. Phoebe Bridgers - “Punisher”
Tumblr media
New Phoebe. Not sure what to say other than it rules. For fans of Elliot Smith.
1. Touché Amore - “Lament”
Tumblr media
Not my favorite album from the band but I think it’s there most accessible. I say accessible in the best way. Biggest bummer of 2020 is not seeing this band again and yelling the lyrics with a PBR in hand.
0. Goings - “It’s For You”
Tumblr media
Okay I separated this LP from the list because it’s my brother’s and cousin’s band. Incredible album and on Know Hope Records. Check it out. For fans of Minus the Bear and Motion City Soundtrack.
Honorable Mentions:
Coriky - S/T
Tumblr media
Ian Mackaye has a new project and album? Sign me up. Best mix of Fugazi and the Evens.
The Beths - “Jump Rope Gazers”
Tumblr media
This album should be my AOTY and could definitely replace a lot of albums in my top ten. This shit rocks and if I were hanging out with people more, hanging around at bars, and/or being able to see this band live would have bumped this LP up for sure. Side note they were supposed to open up for Green Day/Fall Out Boy/Weezer tour in Australia and New Zealand and hope they’re still able to if that tour happens. So cool for them.
Narrow Head - “12th House Rock”
Tumblr media
Not a lot I have to say about this album. 90′s flashback rock and done super well and I eat shit up that’s like that. For fans of Smashing Pumpkins but sang by snotty punker.
Code Orange - “Underneath”
Tumblr media
The heaviest band there is. I think I negleted this record a bit due to how this year has been. This LP rocks  and I love the more industrial elements.
Disq - “Collector”
Tumblr media
Definitely one of the best new young bands out there. This is another album that could replace a bunch in my top 10. Pavement meets Weezer in the best way.

New Music Friday
Hello everyone and welcome to another New Music Review! This week, there won't be any individual posts since there are no worthy releases by main artists. This post will include new songs released through the past week. Let's go!
'Pull Me Closer' by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike
House pop at its finest. I love this genre a lot. I must say I'm surprised that Dimitri and Like Mike didn't add their spin to it though. I would've thought it's a R3HAB song honestly. It's a very nice track regardless. Great addition to a playlist for the upcoming summer.
youtube
'Palm Reader' by DREAMERS, Big Boi & UPSAHL
A great pop rock song! UPSAHL hasn't disappointed me a single time yet! A very fun song. The chorus is very catchy! If I had to compare it to another song, I'd say it has a similar sound to Funhouse by Pink. I love this one.
youtube
'Leave The Door Open' by Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak & Silk Sonic
A typical soulful Bruno Mars song. I love Bruno's sultry songs, they never fail to impress me. His vocal delivery is amazing. The collaborators are a great addition to the song. They vocally compliment eachother perfectly. The bridge is stunning. It's like a climax of passion, lust and love. What a perfect song.
youtube
'Spinning' by No Rome, Charli XCX & The 1975
As I said in a previous post, everything Charli touches is pop gold. Great spin on the 80s sound craze. Upbeat with a very subtle soft rock flair. Very reminiscent of Electricity by Dua Lipa & Silk City. I love this one a lot!
youtube
'Better Without You' by Evanescence
Rock Evanescence is finally back! Rock royalty and rightfully so. Amy's vocals are, to no suprise, stunning. The production is nice. The guitar rifs are great. I've missed this Evanescence! Welcome back!
youtube
'Sacrifice' by Bebe Rexha
Let me start by saying that Bebe is a pop staple whether you like it or not. The girl has written some of the best pop songs and she sang on a few as well. This song falls no short. A great upbeat song about wanting someone you love to forget everyone for you. Bebe's soft delivery is beautiful and the production is great. The pre-chorus buildup is great. This should be her break out track. It's radio friendly and a great representation of her pop roots in a very easy-to-digest format. The video is beautiful. She looks amazing. It's like the video of Animals by Maroon 5 mixed with the video of Electricity by Silk City & Dua Lipa. The gore in it is nice. Great release for Bebe.
youtube
Honorable Mentions
'Falling Up' by Dean Lewis: stunning ballad about a bad state of mind. 'Na Nai Sunna' by Sachin-Jigar, Nikhita Gandhi & R3HAB: great mixture of cultures. I can see this being played at clubs easily. 'Oh La La' by Gabry Ponte, MOTi & Mougleta: very nice club banger. 'oops!!!' by Yung Gravy & Lil' Wayne: a 2000s club banger. Sounds like Fergalicious 2.0 'Beautiful' by Michele Morrone: a raspy voice over a slight trap production ballad. Great combination. 'Amnesia' by Loud Luxury, Ship Wrek & GASHI: Another example on how dance songs can be deep and emotional. A club banger with deep lyrics is always a 'yes' for me. 'Beautiful Mistakes' by Maroon 5 & Megan Thee Stallion: Megan on a slow song is FINE as hell. This better be all over the radio.

100 GECS FT. CHARLI XCX, RICO NASTY & KERO KERO BONITO - RINGTONE (REMIX)
[6.00]
At last, something we can all agree on...
Wayne Weizhen Zhang: Chaotic Evil ft. Chaotic Good, Lawful Evil & Lawful Good. [8]
Brad Shoup: Please know that, due to my age and disorder in which everything sounds like pop-punk, I'm treating my delight in 100 gecs with extreme suspicion. The worried bruise of the original "Ringtone"'s bridge finds its double in Rico Nasty's gleefully conflicted verse. Sarah Bonito tries to sneak in a horror short, Charli chirps like a phone that's never going to voicemail. I feel like I'm listening to The Geometrid. I keep waiting for T-Pain, the human ringtone, to show up. [8]
Oliver Maier: I am slightly self-conscious about how much I like this, given that it is such blatant fan service for a) 20-somethings who frequent the main trifecta of [x]heads music subreddits b) Twitter stans who rabidly demand "COLLAB"s from their faves c) Anthony Fantano (only one of these applies to me). If the existence of this remix somehow precedes an uptick in collaborations between Extremely Online™ musicians then I can only hope that they all be so well-executed. The "Ringtone" remix is both wilder than the original and shockingly coherent, I think because all three performers tap into the most elemental versions of themselves. Charli's verse and perfect delivery of an already-great hook would be at home on the cartoonish Number 1 Angel, less so on her moodier self-titled. Sarah from KKB revisits the uncanny children's-show-presenter flow that characterised the group's breakout project and then subsequently vanished. Rico is just as berserk as one would hope. 100 gecs is objectively a very silly project, but the care with which this remix -- a clusterfuck on paper -- is structured into something both logical and extremely listenable only demonstrates how seriously Brady and Les take their tomfoolery. The gecs are among the best to emerge from the post-PC Music boom because they so firmly reject the parameters of good taste and make redundant the tiresome question of whether their intentions are cynical or sincere. You don't make pop music this brilliant and unselfconscious without pouring your heart into it. [9]
Katherine St Asaph: The other day I read a thinkpiece about, among dozens of other things, how Billie Eilish was corporate bullshit and 100 gecs were wholesome DIY outsiders, despite the gecs at that point having already signed to Mad Decent, producing tracks by the likes of Slayyyter and LIZ, and playing ukelele for an America's Got Talent winner. There is so much Discourse like this, and it all makes me so, so exhausted. What about one collection of sound waves (or Bacon-Sheeran number, or accumulated total of bar hangs with hypebeasts) makes it morally bankrupt, while a near-identical collection of sound waves remains morally acceptable? The rapping sounds like Lady Gaga's "Christmas Tree." [2]
Leah Isobel: Making actual pop music demands legibility and the sacrifice of gecs' usual chaos, but this remix manages to keep their interplay of melodic sweetness and noisy menace intact -- see Laura's charmingly polite request for Charli to sing the chorus again before the song nosedives into the "Click" outro. It's like Owl City corrupted with a virus, and it slaps. [9]
Vikram Joseph: I have some questions for the girl asking Charli to sing the chorus again, because we did *not* need that chorus again. "Ringtone" was a pleasant bit of nonsense at 2:20, but padding it out to almost four minutes with guest vocalists (of whom only Rico Nasty sounds vaguely engaged) is a good way to siphon away whatever charm it had to begin with. Sometimes... things that are expensive... are worse. [4]
Jibril Yassin: The rare example of a posse track that succeeds without removing what made the original so great. Let's put 100 gecs in charge of pop posse tracks from now till infinity. [8]
Alfred Soto: Despite the riot of credits, "Ringtone" is closer to a poor 2010 Ke$ha album track. Ringtones? A decade later? The beat sounds like the creators stole it from a Bush-era Nokia. [4]
Alex Clifton: Our featured players here are the highlight of the song, bringing liveliness to a beat that would otherwise be too glitchy for me. And yet after a while it has the same effect that a phone ringing for two minutes does: slightly annoying, loud enough that you can't ignore it, but too muffled in your bag to find where it could be. Please note my score is expressed in gecs instead of points. [5]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: It's too long and labored over, lacking the giddy charm of the original because the voices are too straightforward. It's fun seeing all these artists on the same track, but all this does is prove that 100 gecs is even more singular than we may have initially thought. [3]
Tim de Reuse: 100 gecs don't work nearly as well for me on such low energy, and their usual reckless abandon appears to have been reined in here so as to elevate the presence of their high-profile features. That, along with the nearly four-minute runtime (about twice as long as a 100 gecs track ought to be, by my measure) gives this the character of a listen-once joke. To be clear, it's a delightful joke. [6]
Ian Mathers: Absolutely better than the original (and "Money Machine" for that matter), mostly because it no longer sounds like Big Dumb Face trying to adapt to modern trends. But it does make me wonder if this is what the people who didn't like Charli's work with PC Music felt like they were hearing. [5]
Jonathan Bradley: 100 gecs let the lil homies ride on us; it's like showing up to gecsCon -- surely a real thing that could exist -- with a grocery bag full of Monster, weed and money, and discovering in astonishment that other people like this band too. (One infamous afternoon, I played 1000 gecs for my office; they were distraught, but I since found out I converted at least one co-worker.) So everyone in this PC Music Khaled lineup tries hard to do their best gecs, with Charli leaning into the lovestruck cutesiness, Sarah Bonito trying to channel the uneasy relationship with technology, and Rico summoning the unearned confidence. But although the elements that original gecs Dylan and Laura stick together sound familiar, their sound is a singular one: A.G. Cook and co. are too deliberate; Black Dresses too consumed by the horror and anxiety around them; Ayesha Erotica too singleminded; Brokencyde too scene. The best part in the remix is when Laura Les asks Charli to sing the chorus again, doing more gecs in one line than anyone else could in three verses. It turns out there's something particular to this mish-mash of pop enthusiasm, hypermodern tension, and shitposting that is not easily replicable. "You just copy everything we do," Laura once chirped, prophetically. "If I wasn't me, I'd copy me too." There's only one gec, even when there's 100 of them. [7]
Kylo Nocom: You know, all that matters is that they had fun. [6]

My top 20 albums of 2019
As 2019 is in its final month, we're not only about to experience the end of the year, but also the end of a decade filled with amazing music, ground-breaking albums and self-made musical geniuses. We've had some fantastic years, such as 2012, 2014 and 2016 for album releases and this year definitely rivals all of those beforementioned with the quality and quantity of records we had. There was such a great quantity of amazing albums this year that I had to change my original plans of a top 15 list and move it up to a top 20 list, just due to the saturation of projects. Before starting off the list, I'd like to give my honourable mentions to some great albums which would've made the list in quite a few other years: Charli XCX - Charli; clipping. - There Existed an Addiction to Blood; Charles Irwin - Singles (308). I'd strongly advise to check these out as well as the ones I'm about to list off and with that said, let's get going!
Tumblr media
20. Solange - When I get Home A project showing her versality, with music ranging from smooth jazz and blues-inspired vibes to Gucci Mane and Playboi Carti features, Solange once again showed a fantastic ear for production and how amazing her voice really is, without putting it in your face and demanding your attention. Instead the album is like a long, carefree day in mid-April, with Solange's voice giving you an amazing vocal experience.
Tumblr media
19. Billy Woods & Kenny Segal - Hiding Places Ranking much lower than last year, the underground New-York genius of Billy Woods once again showcases his amazing talent for rough and grimy delivery combined with industrial, eerie production. The project is very personal for Billy, as he gets very real about his fears and anxieties and even takes a spin for the existential as the talented lyricist raps about his mortality, creating a very unsettling and uncomfortable listen, nonetheless keeping you entertained for the whole duration of the album.
Tumblr media
18. Blood Orange - Angel's Pulse A much shorter project this year than last year's Negro Swan, Devonte released a very raw mixtape, presented as a radio-cut, with sudden transitions and unexpected topic changes. The tape is presented with very groovy production, creating the feeling of a warm summer day, but Blood Orange does keep close to discussing personal topics about his anxieties, insecurities and political worries.
Tumblr media
17.Injury Reserve - Self-Titled Definitely not Injury Reserve's first project, but their official studio-album debut, it really lets the odd trio's strengths shine, with its chaotic production, personal bars and focus on making it out of the regular 9-5 life. Full off innovative ideas, such as the song "Rap Song Tutorial" which is true to its name, the album also includes fantastic features such as Rico Nasty, Jpegmafia and Freddie Gibbs, with its main strength being the difficulties of keeping the balance between being a rapper and a regular person.
Tumblr media
16. EARTHGANG - Mirrorland The Atlanta duo's debut-album, Mirrorland is very witty and cheerful, capturing the story of Doctur Dot and Johnny Venus's come up in the ATL. Full of quirky and whimsical ideas, the record really does remind listeners of Atlanta's OutKast, with EARTHGANG's very own personality and spin to it, with very playful bars and captivating singing, beats with multi-cultural inspirations, such as on "Tequila" and banging trap production, the album is a fantastic mirror to the duo's potential.
Tumblr media
15. Ariana Grande - thank u, next Carried by the freedom and carelessness of Ariana's voice, thank u, next is an album inspired by her romantic experiences through her life, addressing Mac Miller, Pete Davidson and her need for sexual freedom. The project explores the insecurities she has experienced with herself and acts as an assertion of Grande's confidence in herself as a woman, creating a huge emotional range during the 12 tracks.
Tumblr media
14. KAYTRANADA - BUBBA A return to form for KAYTRANADA after a 3 year hiatus, this was an amazing funky and playful R&B project, blessed with fantastic features. The record really does just make you want to dance along and move to the groove, with its defining feature being each song's simplicity, letting the right elements to shine - like in 10% with Kali Uchis with the sexiness of her voice. Don't let the simplicity of the sound fool you, as BUBBA is full of complex production and small elements and samples that you might miss on the very first listen.
Tumblr media
13. YBN Cordae - The Lost Boy Another studio-album debut, YBN Cordae really shows an amazing knack for sticky bars and storytelling, backed by the fantastic production of of a team overseen by J. Cole and feature assassins such as Pusha-T and Anderson. Paak. Although occassionally a bit too corny, the project paints a fantastic picture of his persona and puts the light on a young talent, emerging in the mainstream.
Tumblr media
12. Ari Lennox - Shea Butter Baby One of the best neo-soul projects in the past few years, Shea Butter Baby really wraps around you with its warmth and nostalgia and brings back fond memories of kicking it back on a couch with your friends. Full of amazing jazz and funk samples, the slow pace and easygoing melodies really put you in a carefree state of mind and create a chilled out vibe.
Tumblr media
11. Flying Lotus - FLAMAGRA This might be a difficult album for some, but FlyLo once again shows an amazing talent for creating songs from scratch, with a very psychedelic jazz-funk vibe. Each song telling its own story, with the feeling that each second of the album matters, FLAMAGRA's biggest strength is its spiritual element, giving off an energy that touches your soul, if you grasp deep enough within yourself to feel it.
Tumblr media
10. Jpegmafia - All My Heroes are Cornballs Much tamer than last year's Veteran, Jpegmafia's last album has a very experimental R&B feel to it, but that does not mean that it doesn't sound like pure musical chaos. Showing a surprising vocal versatility, Peggy raps, sings and screams, keeping true to his "Fuck PC Culture" bars and nasty punchlines. Each song has a very manic and wild energy to it, with the album sounding like structured anarchy.
Tumblr media
9. Free Nationals - Self-Titled A modern take on classic soul and jazz, Anderson. Paak's Free Nationals crafted a very sexy, intensive album, that gives a feel that there's no hurry for anywhere and everything will happen in due course. The sensual record can easily be described as baby-making music and has handpicked seductive features like Kali Uchis, Daniel Caesar and Syd to underline that vibe.
Tumblr media
8. Anderson. Paak - Ventura Very much a modern take on a soul record, Anderson. Paak really creates a feel of time-stopping whilst listening to the project's songs. Paak wearing his influences on his sleeve on this one, you can really feel the vibrant melodies and groovy emotions, with the amazing funkiness of Ventura also having a very sensual feel to it, thanks to the thoughtfully picked out features and background vocals.
Tumblr media
7. Mereba - The Jungle is the Only Way Out An album that I believe didn't get enough attention, Mereba's latest release is a very conscious R&B project, full of beautiful darkly-toned synths and very slow and jammy folk. The topics range from facing your vices, to the overwhelming emotions of seeing your lover and the self-realization that people's opinion ain't shit. Her voice is absolutely stunning and authentic, with it giving off the feel of her being uncertain and lost with each song.
Tumblr media
6. Denzel Curry - ZUU Denzel never misses and this is fact once again - releasing his most dynamic record to date, Zuu goes back to Zel's roots of South Florida. In it he reminisces about his come-up and relationships with his family and friends and the project stays true to its nature with the features being only rappers from the area. Although very party-focused, ZUU has a wide range of songs, with boom-bap, trap, soundcloud rap and even having slower, more introspective jams to it.
Tumblr media
5. Rapsody - Eve Eve is a love letter, celebrating the success of the black woman. Rapsody absolutely peaks her musical versatility and rapping potential, crafting an amazing classic hip-hop album, full of creative bars, alluring samples and a very socially engaged range of topics. The record's strengths create a vivid picture of why successful women need to be appreciated and cannot be given enough credit in its impact for the female side of hip-hop culture.
Tumblr media
4. slowthai - Nothing Great About Britain A very heavily punk-inspired record, Tyler clashes with the UK's upper class in this project, exploring the difficulties of the everyday life in the UK's working class with cynical and sarcastic bars, full of energetic and grimey production. The topics in the cleverly titled record go into detail about the class bracket gap, widening poverty, political uncertainities and the average briton's arrogance. The album is full of witty jokes and very direct humor and thai does very well to paint the picture of a realistic Great Britain.
Tumblr media
3. Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Bandana Arguably one of the best produced albums of all time, Madlib and Gibbs really pull eachother deep in their worlds and crafted a geniusly produced project. Celebrating black freedom, the record shines on Freddie's talent for grimey and nimble rapping, with him changing cadence again and again, whilst Madlib's gift for erratic production and turning classic jazz and funk songs into off the wall earworms and samples turns this into a spiritual experience.
Tumblr media
2. Little Simz - GREY AREA I'm kind of pissed off I put this at number two, just due to how good it is. Simz's coming of age album is a wicked, erratic record full of witty bars, discussion of social themes and goes between grimey, rough production and introspective, jazzy vibes, making for great entertainment. The record is a very open window to her life and the difficulties she's had as a woman and is crafted in such a masterful way, that even if you're not catching the lyrics, you'll feel the album's emotions just by listening to the production.
Tumblr media
1. Danny Brown - uknowhatimsayin¿ This project finishes a cycle of Danny for me personally - starting off with his rockstar, crackhead phase with XXX and the consequences of his drug-induced party life in Atrocity Exhibition, his latest project is the maturest face of Danny we've ever seen. Overseen by Q-Tip as an executive producer, uknowhatimsayin¿ is very free-flowing compared to his previous records, topped off with irregular beats and unnerving samples, keeping true to Danny Brown's personality. The project is the culmination of his rap career, as he addresses the need he had to get his life together, get out of the rut he was in and grow up. He uses his cadence and snapiness to make the point of him being grown up, but still being the dude who can do what the fuck he wants.
