disclaimer while I have been playing since launch I've like never interacted with the fandom or looked at any content so I genuinely have no clue if someone's already talked about this

When Aalto comes to get Encore to bring her to the Black Shores, he says he heard about her in a headline titled "Nine-year old girl cracks sensational case." And I was reading her character stories again, so I want to share my thought on what I think this case was.

So what I think it was is that Encore either discovered or exposed abuse/mistreatment in the orphanage she was placed in after her mother's death.

In her character story "Orphanage and Candy House," Encore is watching a candy house (the orphanage) burn to the ground in her dream. Before she fell asleep, Cosmos was telling the story of the Candy House, and said "The Great Encore, blessed by blazing flames, defeated the big bad cat!" and when asked about Encore's friends, says “Everyone was safe because of the Great Encore, of course. From then on, people lived in happiness without worrying about the big bad cat!” Encore then wants to say "Director Mama is not a big bad cat!" so this solidifies the thought that the black cat represents the orphanage head/caretaker that Encore "defeats". We know it isn't Encore's real mother because she specifically refers to it as Director, and towards the end of the story it references hearing "Encore and the other children in the orphanage."

Side note: the Woolies obviously represent Encore's idealized thoughts and reality, but I think Cloudy is the image of the side of her she's trying to protect with her stories and imagination, and Cosmos is the bolder side that protects, her thoughts and perhaps delusions that she uses to detach from reality. This is backed up by this passage from her second character story "A Kid From the Theater:"

"Cloudy represented a gentle princess with a kind heart, adorned in beautiful dresses and a crown, residing in a dreamlike castle. The young Encore aspired to be a princess, longing for elegant dresses, a majestic crown, and a sumptuous bed to rest on. Free-spirited children like her didn’t fret over monsters beyond the castle; it was the black Wooly’s duty to keep her safe — outside the castle was the knight’s battlefield."

So back to the initial analysis: in Encore's dream, she's watching the house burn, and the cat burn with it, saying "the creature was a grotesque symbol of its own transgressions. Encore witnessed its demise, the inevitable consequence for its wicked deeds." So this is symbolizing the orphanage director's downfall, and Encore witnessing her punishment, while "the Reaper refused to easily forgive this sinful soul soaked in innocent blood." I believe the innocent blood mentioned refers to the orphanage children, whether or not they were physically spilling blood or not.

I know most of this is symbolic, but maybe Encore really did burn the orphanage down. Perhaps as a distraction so the other children could escape, or to destroy evidence of some kind. This would also explain why she was in the hospital when Aalto came for her (for burns, maybe), and could maybe explain why her element is Fusion in the first place and her Forte involves fire.

And I'm actually unsure if the orphanage director was acting alone, or being manipulated into harming the children. Encore says "Director Mama isn't a big bad cat!" and at the end, she's talking in her sleep, saying "Encore has defeated the bad guys, so Mama no longer needs to be the big bad cat now!" like she's saying the director can go back to being their mama and stop doing bad things. This makes me wonder if there was a larger organization behind it all, maybe the orphanage was a front for experiments or something? Encore's hands are described as "scarred," so she's clearly been hurt in some way.

Of course, Encore's forgivness towards the cat could just be the usual innocence of a child and the stubborness they can have in believing their parent/guardian is good. But Encore is incredibly smart, so I'm more inclined to believe she's seeing a bigger picture.

This isn't to say the orphanage director was entirely a good person, though. It says the cat "resented Encore for foiling its plan," but that could honestly be taken in a few ways. I don't think she hated the orphanage children and did care for them, but was most likely being corrupted by higher influences. When Encore starts singing to the dying cat, it says it had "sung this same song countless times for every one of its children," so clearly there was some kind of connection.

And then another random thought: hearing "candy house" obviously makes one think of Hansel and Gretel, and the witch living in a candy house to fool and harm children. The orphanage being represented as a candy house that's burning down could be symbolic of the illusion being destroyed, exposing the truth behind it.

this episode was so pretty and christmassy im kinda happy they let it out right now and not at actual christmas time ssjsj i feel like it feels right :') and it was snowing like crazy today anyways so it was the perfect mood

suuuch warm vibes and the night and day forgiveness ark?? it happened so soon and in such a simple way my heartstrings were pulled quite a lot also this is the first show where i've watched mark play a bigger role and he is a very very talanted young actor i now understand why everyone was praising him ever since he showed up😭 ngl might have shed some tears in his scenes on the train

and also is the Day possibly getting his eyesight back even worth getting hopes up? I feel like since its episode 11 (cough cursed one) it might not go as planned but honestly even if it doesnt i think day still can and will have his happy ending with mhok by his side he already felt content with his condition as of episode 9 end and this just adds a bit of painful glimpses of hope that will hurt if its not successful even if the chances were small in the first place :( i just really dont wanna see day being so sad again he's been through so much already but we'll see how it goes

some thoughts

reminder to self too but making friends is really just that simple. or getting closer to someone you've always thought was cool but never talked to because you were too intimidated is also just that simple. its much easier if you have a shared interest tbh but. the worst thing is? they say no. or they ghost you.

and if it goes through? social link rank up and you get invited to do stuff!

anyway this week i made friends with a few diff groups of people ive only ever been mutuals with. and i got invited to do a bunch of things with them and got introed to their own respective friendgroups too. so im kinda happy with that!

and it turned out that they too wanted to talk to me since forever but were also just too shy to do so. maybe the world is just full of individuals who want to make friends but are too scared to make the first move.

so sometimes you have to be the one reaching out.

What media do you currently like other then Genshin?

Infinity Train, OMORI, Wings of Fire, Wolf 359, Pokemon, Undertale, started Spy x Family yrs late recently and have been enjoying it, I need to restart and then finish Utena but I’m loving that, UM a lot of other stuff I’m currently forgetting. I want to get into reading more webcomics, I love xenofiction ones especially. Big fan of What Lurks Beneath for ex

The way I do fandoms online is usually I’ll have one hyperfixation I love engaging with as a fandom (genshin rn) but then I have a lot of medias I may draw or mention but don’t rlly engage with much as fandoms online. So I end up finding it easy to be a multifandom artist but not really a multifandom talker despite really liking some things. That’s not to say I don’t like talking about them with people bc I rlly do but often I don’t feel fandom engagement would heighten my enjoyment of said media so I don’t seek it out as much
