Rebrand: "Florida Africana" Is Now "The Cedar Chest"

I want to update briefly that Florida Africana is undergoing a brand change. For a few years now, I started to not feel as connected to this name. I think it's partly because it was a name I created just to have one 'asap' as I kicked off public posting of my research. I've liked that it included my home state of Florida in it-- because that I do feel connected to. The other part, Africana, while of course it resonates due to my ethnicity, it just felt distant.

I might retain the name for more general topics about black heritage in Florida. Places, events, incidents... But, it won't really be the place for genealogy.

I even used a photo for a while of an ancestor I wasn't particularly connected to, but used it because I don't have many photos from the period that one was taken in. It was 'just an ancestor' and looked ultra vintage, which was cool.

I've since changed to a photo many months ago to an uncle my dad used to talk about so much that my siblings and I felt like we knew him too. (His grand uncle and our great grand uncle). He was an amazing church pioneer and an integral part of my dad's life.

I was having a conversation a few days ago with one of my sisters where my grandmother & grand aunt's cedar chests came up. I'd thought about those chests a lot for many years, and we even talked about them many times in nostalgic conversations; however, for some reason, that term 'cedar chest' just clicked/resonated as the perfect name for my genealogy.

Their cedar chests were a mystery for me as a kid. I didn't see them opened that much, so I naturally wondered what all was inside. I personally only saw what was in them maybe less than a handful of times. I remember seeing old stamps; old letters intact in their stamped & weathered envelopes; notebooks (I'm told that my grandmother alone had in her cedar chest and elsewhere upwards of about 50 notebooks she wrote in); old coins; and old grocery store stamps. There was much more, but that's all I remember seeing. Now that I think about it, my grand aunt let me have a couple coins and stamps. In fact, seeing the old coins & stamps is what got me interested immediately in starting collections of both as a kid, and also sparked a love for 'everything vintage'.

In keeping with the personal nature of this work, creating a style that's more my own, and focusing on storytelling, I am rebranding so fittingly as The Cedar Chest.

I cannot express the way the “He’s a human being” scene in Why Women Kill makes me feel. Just the human need to scream when you’re talking to a group of people, begging them to help you, because there’s no reason why they shouldn’t, they are watching a man suffer before their very eyes as a hate crime is displayed in front of them, but they all just stare. Simone’s desperation and voice breaks and lurches into the crowd to find someone to help while clearly not wanting to stray too far from Karl - tore my heart to pieces.

if you dont play revenant you might not know that revenants have dialogue lines where their own invoked legends (shiro, kalla, etc) talk to them and the revenant responds back, and these happen like CONSTANTLY-- it gets mildly disruptive sometimes when it plays over story voice acting or such, but that aside

i love thinking about this in a world lore context. like, shiro is talking to me in my head, right? is my revenant just standing in a crowd in lions arch and abruptly screaming "DO YOUR WORST! I AM IMPERVIOUS!" at nothing in particular, in front of onlookers? does he ever just suddenly make a Face and then go "sorry, glint was making those weird grunts again"?? i enjoy the thought.

1950 Lane Cedar Hope Chest

My mom comes through sometimes. I had mentioned, like, a month ago that I was craving Goldfish brand pretzels, which are just pretzels in the shape of Goldfish crackers. She couldn't find them at the time, and I was like, "Oh well, not a big deal." Well, apparently, she's been on the hunt every time she went to the supermarket since then, and today, she finally found them! I had not been aware she was even still looking, but I can't lie, the fish shaped pretzels were worth the wait!

I painted this busted up cedar chest (that I found in the attic of our house when we bought it) over the 4th of July holiday. The maze is "solve-able" and begins at the button on the front, and ends inside. (I missed some black paint by my signature, but oh well. Hahaa. So far, "Ed" seems happy and quiet..)

the shirt thing is canon now, i'm declaring it! but cedar secretly doesn't like t-shirts bc he can't unbutton the top few buttons and be slutty in them

Welp, tripping over the cord of my ps3 (yes, I said 3. How else am I gonna play older games?) controller in such a way it kept yanking the cord from the charging port, trying to fix it by gluing the cord into the charging port (this worked), & then my cat hauling ass so ferociously over the cord of the dropped controller that he tore it out of the charging port & cracked the internal mechanism has finally rendered this second controller useless & I can't use it at all (lest I run out the batteries in one ADHD day losing session) until a replacement comes in the mail. RIP all my momentum on DAI, I hope I remember what I was doing come the 16th
