This was exciting as fuck for Eddie. Mostly because Ruby never gave him the vibe that she was into this sort of thing. She was always the kind of girl that would step up and win her own damn prize. While he admired that about her, he wanted to be the guy that won her something. It took him a few tries. The guy wasn't very coordinated and these games were rigged. All odds against Eddie Munson. He chose the game he knew he'd be best at. The one where you aim at the targets with water guns and knock them down. It was his best shot cause he liked shooting zombies at the arcade. Same shit right? Still took him like five tries and he didn't even get the big prize. Medium was good enough. Eddie was looking at the prizes he got to choose from. The only thing he knew was that he didn't want to get anything traditional for Ruby. No bears, no bunnies, no puppies, no cats. Didn't leave him many options. He grinned, finding a stupid squid hat that lit up. The hat was the body of the squid and the tentacles hung from the body, coming almost two Ruby's shoulders. It was red, for obvious reasons. Wearing a proud grin on his face, Eddie placed the squid hat on Ruby's head, then flipped on the switch that had the tentacles lighting up and flashing. "I think it suits you."

Ruby had to admit she was impressed with Eddie's diligence. Once he has his mind set on something he worked until he achieved it, even if it was something as silly as winning her a prize from one of the rigged carnival games. And yes, she knew they were rigged, and there was no way to win anything on the first try unless you knew the secret to the games, but once she'd laid the challenge out there and he'd accepted it, she knew she'd be walking away with something to remember the night by, and he didn't disappoint. As he placed the squid hat on her head and turned the lights on in the tentacles, Ruby went from bewildered at his choice of prize, to cracking a smile that she knew she rarely gave, giving her head a little shake to watch the tentacles wiggle around her shoulders and light up the ends of her hair in an array off colors. Deciding that it was in good spirits to go with the flow — after all he had worked so hard to win her this silly hat — Ruby gave him a twirl and struck a pose, model face and all. "How do I look?" she asked, her grin breaking out into a full blown smile. "I'm positively glowing, right?" she punned, no matter how bad it was, she thought it was funny.

An Analysis of TXT’s minisode 2: Thursday’s Child

First of all, I totally called this at their MAMA 2021 performance. A very niche, youthful concept, as usual. “Thursday’s child” was taken from a nursery rhyme and the full line is “Thursday’s child has far to go.” This may have something to do with the fact that MOA was named on a Thursday (Aug 22, 2019). Anyway, that’s all for another time.

I haven’t written a review (analysis, now that I look at it) on this blog before, but I just had to for this album.

Opening Sequence

Starting off with the first track, Opening Sequence.

Comparing the breakup of a young relationship to the opening sequence of a movie, the lyrics tell a story of pain, regret, and longing. The opening sequence of the movie keeps playing on in the mind of the person, wishing they could have had more in the relationship.

I can see you in my memory Dance with me, dance with me, dance with me Take one more chance on me, chance on me, chance on me I'm bleeding painfully, painfully, painfully You in the faded film, your gaze that erased me

The repetition of lyrics in the chorus works wonderfully to tell the feelings of being trapped in repeating memories. Not only was the initial breakup painful, but the memories he has to go through over and over make it worse.

This was one of my favorites on the album. From the intro to the first verse with Taehyun’s vocals to the illusion of a waltz in 4/4 time in the chorus, it made me want to cry, damn it.

Good Boy Gone Bad

Now we have the title track, Good Boy Gone Bad.

Back when I first started stanning TXT, before they went emo, I said jokingly, “They’re like the Fall Out Boy of K-Pop with their long-ass song titles.” Then they came out with 0X1=LOVESONG and LO$ER=LO♡ER with their new punk pop sound, abandoning the cute, happy, pastel-wearing concept for a grittier, darker feel. Did I expect it? Absolutely not. But did I love it? Dude, I loved it so much. I’ve always loved punk and emo sounds, one of my enduring favorite bands being Fall Out Boy. TXT’s new sound was amazing. 0X1=LOVESONG is one of my favorite songs right now, if not the favorite.

To me, this track is essentially the “Look What You Made Me Do” of TXT. This is their Reputation era. Gone are the cute, happy, pastel-wearing boys. They trade pink sweaters and cowboy hats for black suits reminiscent of My Chemical Romance’s music videos in the 2000s and leather jackets. In CROWN they danced in a multi-colored abstract setting, in Blue Hour they were at a carnival on a magic island. Now they’re dancing in a graveyard and getting in trouble in various ways.

Look at those lyrics. If that isn’t emo I don’t know what else is. And it just gets more emo from there. Like damn, who hurt these boys? Seriously I wanna know. They can catch these hands.

In between the chorus and the verses, the pre-chorus and the bridge have a break between the anger and angst, giving us beautiful a glimpse of the sadness and broken hearts behind the black clothes and the guitar riffs.

Trust Fund Baby

At first this confused me. Usually, “trust fund baby” is a term with negative connotation about a young adult from a rich family who doesn’t need to have a job to be wealthy and happy. I thought this track would have been criticizing other people, but no it’s way more sad.

The shining spoon to me is someone else's story Someone that already have their dreams There's no "game over" in their lives

In Korea, there is something called the “spoon theory” which is about how one’s parents’ social class determines their own. The highest and wealthiest is the golden spoon, then silver spoon, then bronze, and then dirt (source). One of the biggest societal problems in South Korea is poverty and class, as seen in popular media such as Squid Game or Parasite.

Now knowing this, it’s easier to understand the first lyrics of the song. They don’t have that shining, golden or silver spoon. Comparing love to class and financial struggles, they want security in love like the trust fund babies have security in wealth and success.

It’s a song about acceptance of hopelessness, referencing multiple times their previous title track, LO$ER=LO♡ER. Did I tear up a little while reading the English translation? Yeah, a little bit.

Lonely Boy (The tattoo on my ring finger)

Finally! We come to our first unit song of the album with Yeonjun and Huening Kai! 

Yet another song of heartbreak, the lyrics tell of boy who has fallen so in love with a girl that they both get matching ring finger tattoos in place of promise rings. Of course, they both break that promise, leaving the boy lonely again, which he’s used to. But because of the tattoo on his ring finger, he can’t completely forget her like he wants to. The lyrics also compare the tattoo with things she’s said. Like the needle with the ink created the tattoo, her words stabbed his heart so much that he can’t get rid of the damage she caused.

While the pre-chorus changes throughout the song, the chorus remains the same, ending with the heavily repeated phrase, “She ain’t my one and only.” He keeps having to remind himself that he doesn’t need to keep holding onto her, that there’s probably someone else out there for him. But he’s scarred, tattooed by the harm she caused him. He’s been lonely ever since she left. He can’t see that changing any time soon.

Thursday’s Child Has Far To Go

And finally to the last track and the second unit song of the album, we have Thursday’s Child with Soobin, Beomgyu, and Taehyun. 

While the other tracks in this album have a sense of being stuck and lonely and sad, Thursday’s Child has a glimmer of hope in it. An instrumental reminiscent of 80′s synth and punk influences, it’s more upbeat than its predecessors on the album. It’s based around the nursery rhyme I mentioned at the beginning of this review (link for the full rhyme), with the line “Thursday’s child has far to go” as the title and main theme of this story.

While most of the children’s rhyme has more clear meanings, the Thursday’s child line is open to interpretation. Things could go badly or well, as is with most things in life. But no matter what, for Thursday’s child, it will be a long journey, whether the outcome be good or bad. However, even if there’s a chance of failure and heartache, the boys display optimism or realism after a pattern of endless depression in the album.

In a world where much is determined by internet culture, they see a trend of #breakup and adding “glowup” next to it. Just because they broke up with a lover doesn’t mean that sadness is the only outcome. They can improve themselves, learn to be happier, and move on.

The last lyrics of the bridge are some of my favorites. They can see that the darkness will pass. They have faith that this isn’t the end. There is still a long story to be told, and an unknown ending. There’s hope beyond the present.

As usual with TXT’s releases, I loved this one. The lyrics so wonderfully capture the heartbreak of a young adult, the anger and sadness that follows, and eventually shine light on the hope they have for the future. Paired with a dark concept with deep shadows and night scenery, the album’s sound continues their journey through youth into adulthood, seeing the harsh realities of lost love and then the life that comes after it. 

TXT has a concept that at its core doesn’t change. They still represent youth. But the outside has evolved, as one’s youth does. As they grow older and wiser through their careers, their music and performance grow with them. They wear darker clothes, have sexier choreography, and more mature lyrics, as one would expect from young men, all while still keeping their youthfulness about them.

We don’t know where the story goes next. Since we know it’ll be a long one, I can’t wait to see more albums and singles from this group. We’ve seen them grow from naïve, joyful boys into angry, hurt young men. Where will their journey take them next? I don’t know, but I can’t wait to see more from them.

All Hallows: Possible Expansions

Successful theme parks don't stand still. They evolve—tweaking what almost works, dropping what doesn't, replacing it with something that will. And if they're successful enough...they expand, building entirely new areas to explore new facets of their basic subject matter.

I don't think that's possible with All Hallows as I have written it up. My goal from the start was to have one area for eachrecognizable facet of Halloween—trick-or-treating and fun for children (Trick-or-Treat Village), the harvest season (Pumpkin Acres), contemporary horror, splatter, and monster movies (Ghoul City), old Celtic Samhain traditions and dark faerie tales (Goblin Woods), and Gothic horror tropes (County Drakul). If you can think of a basic aspect of Halloween that I've missed in this, I'd love to hear from you!

However...there are certain Halloween aestheticsand what you might call subgenres that I haven't specifically included, and these might provide material for hypothetical future expansions of All Hallows, were it hypothetically a real theme park. So here are the ones I've come up with:

A carnival of horror: For reasons I will never quite understand, evil monster clowns and other circus/carnival motifs are really popular for Halloween. There's certainly a lot of instantly recognizable iconography to work with, and if your theme is any variation on “amusement park,” the attractions create themselves. Rickety-seeming rides, freaks and contortionists, sinister magicians, mirror-mazes, disorienting lights and music, and of course, evil monster clowns. The most natural location for this area would be between Ghoul City and County Drakul—a lot of circus/carnival motifs originated in the 19thCentury (hence why magicians wear top hats), but the fixation on making them horrific is a product of the 20th.

A haunted ocean: On the other hand, the ocean itself isn't a major focus of Halloween imagery (unless your idea of scary begins and ends with the imagination of H.P. Lovecraft), but plenty of individual things associated with the ocean are pretty common in connection with the holiday, and the sea certainly has its share of ghost stories. Ghost ships, pirate skeletons, drowned zombies, sea monsters, murderous mermaids, and sure...let's throw in some Lovecraftian squid tentacles. The obvious place to put this one is as an extension of Gilman Municipal Beach in Ghoul City, but another possibility is to make it its own park—many theme parks have an adjunct water park right next door, with pools and slides.

A Western ghost town: Like the ocean, the Old West is chock-a-block with ghost tales even if they don't constitute a discrete Halloween theme on their own. “Ghost towns” aren't so called because they're thought to be literally haunted, but that's the direction everyone likes to take them anyway. Ghost riders in the sky, ghost trains, lonely hilltop cemeteries, bleached bones in the desert, the occasional spooky creature from Native folklore...there's plenty of material here. Thematically, Western ghost tales have more in common with the Gothic tradition, but environmentally, this only makes sense as an offshoot of Pumpkin Acres.

An ancient necropolis: The vengeful mummified pharaoh is a Halloween staple alongside other monsters of the Gothic lit/Golden Age of Hollywood such as Dracula and Frankenstein's monster, but he's a cultural outlier and it's hard to put him in the same setting as the others. An area featuring ancient ruins would give him a natural place to exist, and could also include legendary horrors like monsters of Greek mythology and zombified warriors. It could be situated near County Drakul, perhaps "introduced" via a Victorian museum or archeological society.

And that about wraps up my vision for the ultimate Halloween theme park so far! But watch this space, because I plan to launch a dedicated sideblog where I'll keep developing and workshopping the idea year-round. I'll post things like moodboards to really nail down the aesthetics of the place, share any fanart or other ideas you guys come up with, maybe even compose some original music. The park would be year-round if I could build it, so I'll do the next best thing!

It's gotta be some dumbass that everyone merely tolerates that's like "haha I'm gonna be funny and not put on the restraints" and everyone is like "haha classic Johnny" but really they're not amused bc it's fckin Johnny for cow's sake. Anyways, imagine being the one that's SITTING next to that bozo. And this is gonna be long btw. Part 1/?

Part 2/?: so then Johnny's all pumped and this bozo gets to the peak of the rollercoaster and is like "OH SHIT" and tries to get off but his dumb butt probably has one of those carnival squid hats on so he gets sTUCK on the restraints that he should've worn. So then Johnny's flailing about, half in half out of the seat, and then BOOM rollercoaster takes off down the hill. Bye bye Johnny, but unfortunately this post most continue.

Part 3/?: So Johnny literally YEETS. He's flying up, screaming, everyone else literally just saw Johnny flash past their eyes. Now Johnny's literally falling to his death, regretting how stupid he is and how he's accomplished nothing with his life, how everyone will just remember him as a slack-ass. Does Johnny live or die? You decide. I am merely a scribe of events, not the judge, jury, and executioner. God bless. Fin.

“Well how on the nose of a question. It just so happens my two crushes are Fucking dating each other, and no, I’m not going to do shit about it. They are much happier without me barging in on the relationship and I wouldn’t dare break them up. It’s TheoandEdgar. Inseparable. They have their fairytale ending and I’m not a part of it. “I used to think I wanted to wipe Theo from my brain. I thought forgetting everything that happened would make it easier to deal with his death. But Mom talked to me and said that forgetting doesn’t make it any easier, because your heart will still remember the pain and you can’t get rid of that. So no. I think I’ll keep my memories.”

35. Is every person in this world wholly unique or can they be categorized? Can they be grouped and mentally dissected? Are you just another sheep in another flock or are you the sole unique soul?

“You know what? Fuck that ok. People are unique. Every Fucking one of them. I’ve seen people’s souls. I know for a fucking fact that every one looks different. People don’t fit in neat boxes. Even if you like the exact same things as someone else, you have different emotions and you can’t categorize those. Life isn’t neat little boxes. Life’s messy colors and drawing outside the lines. yesterday was a day of festivities and carnivals and some friends and I bought squid hats (aka it was a friend’s [two friends’ actually] 24th birthday and I kinda wanna make doodles of it later though I spent most of it with my eyes closed and wallet tight)

still ready to pass out and my feet are killing me between that and standing at work all day (with my bad shoes because my usual ones are soaked) but it was a good time

also

apparently they’re planning my birthday already (it’s in October) and there are thoughts of NYC so I might be Ny in NY, NY

also uh people with experience, what are good places to go in NY when you’re a nerd who likes hipster mangas and cute things and Gamecube stuff, also what are other good places for people who like things like pokemans and are varying levels of anime trash and other nerd stuff (I know of like Nintendo World but that’s it)

So, after many weeks of deciding I’d gotten up too late to go anywhere and staying in bed for the day, I finally went to Danshui (淡水, also spelled Tamsui on the MRT). I thought it would be a nice, quaint seaside historical district where I could go for a stroll and have some scallion pancakes. WRONG. The atmosphere and population was more akin to Coney Island in the summer, or any kind of fair or carnival. If you combined all of the worst things about crowds, inept bicyclists in crowds, people walking very s l o w l y in front of you until they come to a complete stop for absolutely no apparent reason, in addition to anything you can imagine eating at a fair replaced with a wide variety of squid parts prepared a wide variety of ways (I like me some fried calamari rings but the whole squid on a stick is too much), crammed onto a boardwalk, you have Danshui. There were no pancakes in sight. The only good thing that came out of this endeavour was that I was finally forced to overcome my fear of ordering in restaurants alone- by virtue of the fact that I had lapsed back into my old, terrible habit of walking as far away from the crowd as possible and not stopping until I was weak from hunger, distantly aware that I would not be able to walk back to the metro in this state. Some small dignified part of me held out and refused to eat ramen at the 7-11 when there were restaurants (I had wandered into a residential high rise sort of area devoid of tourist traps), so I got some heavenly beef noodles instead. Mainly because I can read the words “beef noodles” but none of the other qualifiers, so I just walked up and said “牛肉麵?” in a hopeful tone and the only complication was when they asked if I wanted flat or round noodles. 

I also saw a cute cat sitting on a scooter. That made it all worth it. Then I turned around, walked back to the metro, and got the hell out of there. Clearly Danshui has some kind of appeal, but it’s not for me. If anything I should have gotten out a couple stops earlier and gone for a walk along the boardwalk through the mangrove swamp, that’s my ideal adventure. Back in Taipei City I ended up going back to the night market to get a hat for my bff in the U.S. that matches one I bought in Korea, after consulting her on colors. The night market was in a similar state of being overcrowded with slow walkers. Every so often I get the urge to shave my head and go hike in the back country for a few weeks, and I gotta say it’s coming on pretty strong again these days. We’ll see how I feel after China, eh?

so i spent this summer running carnival games, here's some fav moments

-white blonde families with conservative slogans on their shirts who try their best to ignore that i’m A Lesbian™

-hearing a boy say “excuse me, sir” and realizing that this is the first time i’ve ever been misgendered (but far from the last)

-aggressive attempts to lowkey destroy fragile masculinity, ranging from calling a clearly pink seahorse red to spending five minutes convincing a parent that no, the unicorn your son wants is not, in fact, Too Girly

-people getting insanely aggressive about basketball

-“are you a boy or a girl?” “remember jimmy, we don’t ask.” 

-watching little kids climb into the Employee Zone and doing nothing to stop them 

-hearing the words “can i speak to your manager?” for the very first time 

-showing a girl the inside of the drink cart because she wanted to know how it worked 

-having a boy sit down at the water racing game, stare into my eyes, and say “i saw this in the movie. i like this game.” before smiling and walking away 

-rigging games so that little kids win a prize

-"you look like the guy" ???? "from before" ????????????

-college students getting more excited about winning prizes than most of the kids (especially the squid hats?)

-the excitement of watching someone win the jumbo prize, followed shortly after by the horror of five minutes of waiting for someone to grab the jumbo prize from storage

"If a squid is a good reason to smile, you have issues." Says the walking-talking issue. Eddie thought so lowly of himself that he didn't even consider that he was playing a role in the smiling. He didn't think about himself, or the carnival, or anything - just the squid. He wasn't that big of an idiot though. It made sense. She smiled only after she had the squid hat on her head and the tentacles lit up. "Pretty sure no one else would consider getting you that very stylish hat." It was a very Eddie pick. Any other guy would have gone for the a stuffed animal or some jewelry. A squid hat that lights up was way cooler, and memorable.

Eddie let Ruby walk ahead of him. Not by a lot, just a couple of steps ahead. It was his sneaky way of letting her lead the way. If he was walking in front of her, she'd probably follow wherever he went on instinct alone. If she was walking ahead, she'd go wherever she wanted to go without realizing it and Eddie would follow. This wasn't about him. He knew this wasn't Ruby's general vibe so he wanted to make it about her - what she wanted to do, what she wanted to eat, what she wanted to see. The only thing Eddie absolutely needed was a pumpkin ale before the night was over. If he could get that, he'd be good.

"You good at any of these games?"

"Hey, I know how to smile, I just don't come across too many good reasons to." And yet somehow, something as simple as spending her evening at a carnival with Eddie Munson had pulled out more grins and smiles from her than Ruby would ever admit to out loud. She twirls one of the tentacles around her finger like it was her hair, and shakes her head. "I hope you know I'd never wear this for anyone else."

Something about Eddie made Ruby want to just... enjoy everything around her. As they walked a bit further down the line of booths filled with their rigged games and colorful displays, Ruby realized she hadn't had this much fun in a really long time. A lot of guys tended to try to impress her with tales of themselves achieving impressive feats in things like sports or dangerous hobbies like sky diving, but Eddie didn't seem to care all that much about things like that, and she found that she liked that his attention was on her for what seemed to be more than just trying to get in her pants.

"We gotta win you somethin' now."
