dean: ugh. ik EVERYONE says this, but s1 dean was just like soo perfect. too good to be true. he was cute, charming, and kind. i think he was a good 1st bf for rory. besides the fact that he freaking dumped her just because she wasnt ready to say "i love you back" and didnt respect her opinion on donna reed. and theres more. s4, took advantage of her and took away her virginity (im not fully blaming him, rory made me really mad too). like dude, he was MARRIED. poor lindsay didn't deserve being treated the way she was also. she just wanted to be with her husband. and then he based their (rory and dean) little relationship on sex. mike S1 analysis (kinda)

this isn't a character analysis, its regarding the framing of mike after the events of the upside down.

so i was rewatching S1 for the hundredth time (as one does looking for byler crumbs) and something struck me.

i was on the last few mins of ep8 and i noticed something that was worth telling y'all. or maybe its just that i'm skin deep in delusion lol. also this is LONG.

background : isolated shots of people in a group setting are always used to indicate a deeper connection of that person with the object/person of focus in that particular scene.

thinking about how we got isolated shots of mike like this (when will was found) :

mike was the focus of this shot

then we were shown this as the camera zoomed in on mike (telling us that we're seeing his perspective)

then these infamous shots. the duffers had no reason to highlight mike's eagerness here (other than indicating the fact that mike and will have a very tender relationship diff than the others because we already know that the party love each other very much)

now I know this shot doesn't have mike in it but STILL we are told through that "Mike laughs". they all were jumping with excitement and were laughing so WHY HIGHLIGHT ONLY MIKE?

we see mike again when they've all shared hugs and here if you pay attention his expression says a lot. he is bubbling with pure happiness upon seeing will again.

but the intention of showing mike alone in this shot was to feed to our subconscious that mike's relationship with will is stronger (and different) than dustin and lucas's. this next shot proves my point.

dustin and lucas are blabbering about the events that happened during his disappearance and are shown TOGETHER, thus not having any indication of intimacy that we were shown in the case of mike.

then will coughs and we see mike (isolated in this shot) again with a little bit of concern on his face. (if the boys were to be shown to have equally strong friendships we would've got all three of them together in this shot but NO. we see a concerned mike and THEN we see a shot of dustin and lucas together). but WHERE do we see a group shot?

when el comes up in there convo. isn't that interesting? if mike had genuinely romantically fallen for her (as he said in his monologue) wouldn't it make sense for mike to have isolated shots here? but we don't get even a SINGLE shot of mike alone when el is being talked about. we get all three of them as if they all have the same relationship with el (platonic friendship).

then fast forward to the DnD game

we see will rolling the dice and mike looking at him fondly (pt.1)

EDIT : after reading @dinitride-art 's wonderful lighting analysis i saw another thing worth mentioning here

@dinitride-art mentioned how in s4 will is always shown in different/soft/angelic lighting whenever we're in mike's perspective.

see how in this will is bathing in light and is literally glowing while dustin and lucas are similarly lit (in low lighting).

and i don't need to say anything about this next one honestly

this means we're meant to see mike's perspective of will (soft/angelic/glowing) through the lighting choices all along.

this is when jonathan comes to pick will up and lucas is making fun of dustin. we see mike looking at will fondly(pt.2 coz honestly, this screencap of mike the preceding screencap are EXACTLY the same, as in, mike has the exact same expression on two different occasions (the second one where will isn't even the focus on the convo as opposed to the earlier one))

now one last one

mike is shown bidding will farewell TWICE, once when him and dustin are saying together and the second time here, as if he wants will to explicitly know that HE is saying goodbye.

the duffers are telling us from the beginning that there is a lot more to mike and will's relationship and they've been building it up from the start.

EDDIE IN EVERY SEASONS TIE IN:  this is a rough draft compiling how I will write Eddie in seasons 1-4. I don’t think it’s too invasive on other character’s canon?? It’s supportive if anything, at least I think so, it doesn’t mess things up. But there’s lots of room for tweaking! Plus, I cannot remember all the fine details of previous seasons because of disability reasons. So, forgive me if I get things the wrong way around.

SEASON 1.

Main focus for Eddie: helping Jonathan and Joyce find Will utilising Corroded Coffin/The Hellfire club to help. He is not present for the Demogorgon attack in the Byers house in EP8, but instead stays with the party to look after them and take part in the deprivation tank scenes. He feels guilt at the end for not being able to help Jane further when the agents show up and the Demogorgon comes at them.

Eddie has probably known the Byers for at least a few years and has befriended Jonathan and Will in that time, and in turn, the party, though to a smaller degree than what we see in S4. It’s more casual acquaintances and fellow D&D nerds, though he has probably transported the boys about in his van more than once.

Jonathan, maybe Joyce is aware that Eddie is bisexual. This can be handy for Will rpers in later seasons.

He sees Joyce as the mother he never had. Eddie’s mother suffered from chronic depression and he was often neglected. So, he’s very attentive to helping Joyce and will do anything she ever asks of him.

Does not get along with Steve at all. Nope. It’s a hateship at this point. And will he punch out Steve for attacking Jonathan, especially while using a homophobic slur? Ohhhhh yes. This happens after the Demogorgon battle at the very end of the season.

SEASON 2.

Main focus for Eddie: flits between Steve and Jonathan’s narratives (since jon is developing his romance with nancy at this point), developing a friendship/antagoship with Steve, and begins to spark a siblingship with Max. Is part of the junkyard and tunnel battles (after being summoned by Dustin for back up), as well as accompanying Steve and Dustin to dispose of Dart. This is where co-dads begin. He is not present for Steve and Billy’s altercation, though, and ultimately feels guilty for it afterwards because Steve looks like hell.

Because of the final events of S1, Eddie has found himself closer to the members of the party. They’ve awoken a protective instinct in him after what happened to Jane.

He encourages Jonathan to go for it with Nancy after her and Steve are over because buddy, he’s sick of the simpering looks.

Eddie sells weed at the party Nancy, Steve and Jonathan are at. He’s dressed as a bard, no joke. Eddie helps Jonathan take Nancy home.

Where co-dads of Dustin begins to develop here. It forces Steve and Eddie to interact on better terms than in S1. I’d like to believe they resolve their differences, working together as a team to defeat the Mindflayer and look after the kids split between them. And though Eddie doesn’t out himself to Steve, he makes a point of saying that Jonathan could have ended up hurt or even dead if it got around that Steve accused him of being gay.

SEASON 3.

Main focus for Eddie: working in scoops ahoy with Robin and then Steve. Only partially involved with Russian shenanigans, primarily with Dustin and Erica. Does not focus on key Robin and Steve moments because that’s not cool, that’s their thing, but he takes part in rescuing them with Erica and Dustin. He also tries to get through to Billy at the Starcourt Mall, having recognised some similarities between them and their family over S2 and 3, and ultimately takes a beating during Starcourt Showdown from Billy (if that’s cool with Billy rpers) while defending the kids and Max. Once again, Eddie feels guilty for not being able to help Billy.

Up to Robin rpers, but I will generally write Eddie and Robin as already being acquaintances if not friends. Whether Eddie knows she is a lesbian and vice versa etc, is entirely up to individual interpretations.

Eddie is still very close friends with Jonathan, but perhaps a distance has been placed between them what with Jonathan having a girlfriend and his newspaper job. Which can absolutely be rectified, but we need some drama, right?

SUBPLOT:  Eddie having to kill a flayed person to protect Erica and Dustin, and that messes him up a lot. Especially as they then have to rescue Steve and Robin from the Russians.

Ribs on Max for being so adorable with Lucas. He ships Lumax okay. 

SEASON 4.

Main focus for Eddie: Guilt. Do you see where this is going? Enter Chrissy Cunningham. I don’t need to explain anything further to ya’ll. Just some personal bits I am implementing.

Eddie does miss Jonathan a lot. Yeah, he’s got his Hellfire/CC bros. But Jon is still very much missed as is Will, Joyce and Jane.

Is on established friendship terms with the scooby gang/fruitys.

Eddie gets Vecna’d hardcore because of his whole ass trail of guilt, and the scoobs + dustin having to bring him outta it.

Sorry Nancy, but Eddie is gonna full on platonically kiss Jonathan when he sees him again. When, you know, he’s not half-dead from Demobat at

Was there anything we could’ve done differently?

Y/N found herself asking this question constantly. When they fought Reiner and Bertholdt in Shiganshina, when Eren sent them a letter from Marley asking for their help, and now…

Cheers were the first thing Y/N heard as she climbed into the blimp with help from Connie and Jean. Despite how happy she felt to be going home to Paradis, she couldn’t understand why the others were cheering.

They had just committed genocide, unwillingly or not, how did that make them any better than the Marleyans?

Noticing the frown on Y/N’s face as she stated at the other members of the Survey Corps, Sasha stepped forward to place a hand on the girl’s shoulder. Y/N quickly looked back in Sasha’s direction, a warm smiling making its way onto her face, especially as Sasha began to speak.

“I can’t wait to get home and eat.” Sasha leaned her head back slightly, removing her hand from Y/N’s shoulder to place them both on her stomach. “Maybe Niccolo made us a nice, warm meal.”

Despite their current situation, Y/N couldn’t help but laugh at Sasha’s antics. “Of course that’s all you’re thinking about. Do you ever think about anything other than food, Sasha?”

Sasha opened one eye to look at Y/N. “Hey, I thought you loved that about me!” She stuck her tongue out.

Y/N rolled her eyes jokingly. “Yeah, and everyday I wonder why.”

Connie, who had been standing with the two girls, suddenly threw an arm around Sasha’s shoulders. “Are you kidding, Y/N? You’ve been head over heels for Sasha since she ate that potato during our induction.”

Y/N’s eyes widened in embarrassment. “C… Connie! I told you that in confidence!”

Connie moved to cover the top of his head from Y/N’s hand as she jumped in his direction, prepared to defend the crush she had on Sasha back in their trainee days.

The secret of their feelings had come out a few years ago. They had been helping Historia at the orphanage she set up after becoming Queen, it was a sweet memory hidden amongst all the bad. Between Rod Reiss and fighting Reiner and Bertholdt, it was a nice moment between the two of them.

“This is Kaya!” Sasha grinned as she placed her hands on the child’s shoulders. Kaya stood just in front of Sasha, her eyes focused on the ground as she suddenly became shy.

Y/N smiled softly at Sasha. There was once a time where Sasha thought of herself as a coward, but Y/N knew better. The day Sasha risked her life to fight a Titan with a single arrow while protecting Kaya proved that she wasn’t a coward at all.

“It’s nice to meet you, Kaya. I’m Y/N,” she crouched down slightly to be face to face with the girl who had come to think of Sasha as an older sister.

“I know,” Kaya squeaked out. “Sasha… Sasha’s talked about you a lot!”

Sasha’s eyes widened in embarrassment as she quickly averted her gaze while Y/N looked up at her in surprise. “She does?” Y/N asked in a whisper.

Seeming to notice what was going on between the older girls — especially thanks to the blush that had taken over Sasha’s face — Kaya nodded her head. “She said you’re really pretty, and she was right!”

Y/N bit back her smile as she stood up straight, nervously fiddling with her hands as she stared at Sasha. “You think I’m pretty?”

“I-” Sasha choked out, unable to really say anything as the red hues on her cheeks grew darker.

“Well… I think you’re pretty, too,” Y/N muttered. “Really pretty.”

Connie stayed on the ground, his hands still covering his head as Y/N retreated back to Sasha’s side, glaring at the boy even as she pressed a kiss against Sasha’s cheek.

Though Y/N turned back to look at Sasha after noticing the girl hadn’t said anything for a few minutes now.

Sasha stood there, the smile wiped from her face as a stern expression replaced it. “Sasha? What’s wrong?” Y/N questioned.

“I just heard something,” she explained.

Jean’s eyes flickered from Sasha, to the other soldiers. “Quiet down!”

Connie, seeming to realise that something was wrong, stood up from the ground. “Why isn’t Lobov back yet?”

“He should’ve come up by now…”

Before Y/N could say anything else, her eyes fell onto a small figure rolling into the blimp. A loud bang echoing through the small aircraft as everyone’s cheers went dead silent.

Y/N’s eyes moved from the attacker to Sasha, who began to fall backwards, till her body was hitting the ground.

Everything was set into motion, the other soldiers moving to restrain the attackers while Connie and Jean ran for Sasha.

Y/N stood there in shock, unable to tear her eyes away from the sight of Sasha bleeding out on the floor of the foreign aircraft. “Sasha! Stay with us!” Connie cried out.

Finally snapping out of whatever trance she had been trapped in, Y/N dropped to her knees beside Sasha, carefully placing her hands against the shot wound near her rib cage.

She could feel the warm blood seeping on to her hands, but she kept her teary eyes focused on Sasha’s pale face. “Come on, Sasha! Stay awake!” She pleaded.

Don’t die so far from home…

“Y/N… You’re so loud…” Sasha whispered, her voice coming out shaky as she blankly stared past the three who sat by her. “So… is our food… ready yet?”

Don’t die…

“Get a tourniquet!” Jean ordered in a loud voice, while Y/N kept her hands pressed against the wound in an attempt to block the blood.

“Please… stay with us,” she whispered, moving one of her hands to gently touch Sasha’s face as two other soldiers ran over to wrap the wound and stop the bleed. “Don’t leave me, Sasha. Please!”

Connie fell out of his kneeling position, watching Sasha in concern as Jean took the attackers into the other room.

The tears streamed down Y/N’s face as she took Sasha’s hand into her own. “Just hang on. You’re going to make it home, I promise.”

Sasha weakly glanced up at Y/N, as the girl gently placed her forehead against her own. Y/N’s grip on Sasha’s hand grew tighter as Sasha attempted to speak again, only for rasping coughs to escape her lips as she attempted to say her love’s name one final time.

There was still so much for them to do, they were supposed to have more time left. They were meant to head back to Sasha’s village one day, make a home for themselves. Sasha was going to teach Y/N how to hunt properly, she promised she would.

And Y/N was supposed to tell her the words she had ached to say ever since Sasha first kissed her at that beach four years ago. I love you. Three trivial words, sure, but words they had been too scared to say in fear of a moment like this.

But Y/N knew what she felt every time Sasha smiled in her direction, it was love.

And now it was too late...

Y/N felt Sasha’s hand go limp in her own one, causing her to quickly clench her eyes shut, unable to stop the sobs that wracked through her body as the field medics announced Sasha’s death.

Y/N barely noticed Connie leave her side, until Mikasa and Armin were running out from the other room, crying for their friend.

She shakily pushed herself up off the ground, staggering away from Sasha’s corpse. Ignoring the numb feeling coursing through her body, Y/N pressed her back against the wall of the blimp, shaky breaths leaving her lips as she stared down at the blood staining the palms of her hands.

Sasha’s blood…

The love of her life’s blood...

Sasha’s raspy breaths as she struggled to breathe through the pain haunted Y/N’s mind, and the question she had been asking herself for the last four years came back to her as she weakly lifted her head, looking between Sasha’s blood and the child soldiers who had killed her.

Was there anything we could’ve done differently?

Pretty Boy & The Kid

In 506 mitchell calls eddie “pretty boy” and he calls buck “the kid”. It was sort of a funny throwaway line mostly I think, but wondered how taking buck as “the kid” seriously in terms of the mitchell & eddie and eddie & savanna dialogue might shift the interpretation of those lines.

So, I present to you the relevant lines from those two conversations:

1. “Kid’s been waiting almost a year for a new heart.”

If we accept the potential double meaning, this line suggests that both chris and buck have been waiting for a heart. I take “almost a year” to mean 8-11 months. That’s a somewhat arbitrary time period but it makes more sense to me than a smaller timeframe since mitchell said “almost a year”. Maybe the time frame doesn’t matter in this case but they do interesting things with numbers in this ep so I think it may.

So, that timeframe leaves us pondering stuff that happened in s4 between ep1 and ep8 (or January 18 - March 8). I included 408 (which aired on March 8) bc 506 was originally 507 and was slated to air 8 months after (November 8).

That first half of s4 was a busy time for matters of the heart for buddifer. Both eddie and buck were starting to date. Also eddie was maybe starting to feel like chris needed of a mom/parent. He was also scared that chris wasn’t ready, or more likely that he wasn’t ready for a woman in his life. We know how eddie tends to proxy chris when he’s talking about his own feelings.

I think it’s interesting that the “almost a year” timeframe puts us squarely inside these heart aka emotional/romantic/familial issues. Buck and eddie were feeling their feelings about moving forward and making meaningful romantic relationships at this time. If we accept that both buck and chris are subtextually “the kid”...very inchresting.

2. “What do you want me to do? Go back to prison? Sit there rotting in my cell while my kid dies?”

Mitchell delivers this line too. We know that mitchell and eddie are parallel in this ep. Mitchell is an escaped convict trying to help his son and eddie is contemplating escaping his own emotional prison. He struggles with that concept the entire ep. Does he stay in his cell because it’s safer for his loved ones or does he let himself out and what does that mean for him.

If he stays in prison or continues to ignore matters of his own heart, what happens to chris? Eddie legit feels that his own heart issues are insurmountable and his dialogue with mitchell explores that. Eddie and mitchell’s conversation and later eddie and savanna’s conversation imply that eddie’s own heart is not quite healthy enough to give to chris yet the transplant metaphor is prominent.

In eddie’s case, I think he feels doomed if he does express his own emotions and doomed if he doesn’t. We know that eddie needs control. I think the things in his heart feel wild and unruly like the zoo metaphor in the season’s opening arc and like the prison riot metaphor in this ep. Eddie actually urges mitchell to go back to prison and find another way to save nolan. I think eddie is having a similar thought process for himself. To keep bottling up his own emotions and find an alternative means of getting chris the heart that he needs to grow up healthy and happy.

That’s buck folks. That’s why eddie is giving chris to buck and buck to chris. They both have good working beautiful hearts. Buck is eddie’s version of a bypass. I think that says so damn much about how much eddie recognizes and loves buck’s beating heart. I really do think that buck is eddie’s heart as well as chris being eddie’s heart. Eddie is still learning/deciding if and how to nurture his own heart. Based on the conversation and visual narrative in this ep, I think eddie has decided to “rot in his cell” rather than poison chris AND buck with his emotional issues.

3. When I found out about Nolan I was like, “Great. I’ll meet when he shows up in the cell next to me.” He’s not like that though. He’s a good kid. Nothing like me at all.

Eddie told Frank in therapy in 309 that chris is nothing like him. He’s an open happy kid who shares every thought and feeling. That is NOT eddie. But you know who else is a “good kid” open and willing to share his thoughts and feelings? BUCK. Buck is all heart and eddie sees that. Eddie loves that. Also, eddie really wants to protect that. We constantly see buck trying to save eddie’s life when he gets into deadly situations but also again and again we see eddie trying to save buck’s heart when life deals him devils and demons. Eddie is always providing buck’s heart with a jump and jolt. He want’s buck too to stay open and good and willing to share his emotions, just like he wants that for chris.

If eddie feels his heart/ability to engage with his emotions is no good, it makes total sense that he would give the man he trusts with his son more than anyone custody of chris. The will is eddie’s heart bypass. But it’s not perfect. It removes eddie from the equation because for buck to get chris, eddie has to die. Buck and eddie have got to talk about all these unspoken things between them and soon because this ish is cray!

4. “He was watching you for years, from a distance. He saw that Nolan was a good kid. Mitchell didn’t want to screw him up too.”

Eddie speaks this line to savanna in the hospital after mitchell dies to give his heart to nolan. This is literally just eddie talking about himself and savanna is at least a partial stand-in for sh*nnon. Eddie watched sh*nnon and chris from across the ocean while he was serving in the military. In the s2 christmas ep eddie tells buck that he was scared and used his service to avoid actively being a dad. Now in 506 we learn why. Eddie was scared of messing chris up emotionally. He was scared of “congenital heart failure”. So he stayed away.

You know who else eddie is loudly staying away from, keeping his distance from this season? BUCK. Buck is another “good kid” that eddie doesn’t want to screw up by sharing his emotional issues and needs. So he’s widening the distance between them. Stepping back and sinking into himself. Caging himself so that he doesn’t hurt him or so that he doesn’t get hurt by him because he wants to be with him so damn bad.

Pretty Boy

This didn’t come into play in the text much at all, not like buck as “the kid” but I do think this mitchell-assigned nickname for eddie matters. Eddie is the poised, reserved guy who keeps it together, who puts on a mask and faces the world, a model of reserve and control. And that shit is killing his heart. It’s shredding his emotions. It’s time for him to STAHP!! It’s time for him to stop repressing, take off the mask and show what’s really inside him, the good and the not so good. Pretty boy needs to heal and my money is on buck (and chris) as critcal to that process.

All of these lines and nicknames really stood out to me and hit different especially when I substituted buck as “the kid”. Then again, maybe I’m just losing it and y’all should ignore me! LOL!

💚Favorite thing about them: So many things! So many thingssss! He's so adorable and badass. Special mention gotta go to his freckles. And somehow he got me to like the color green. I used to hate green with a passion, but he changed my mind.

💚brOTP: Dekusquad, or Izucrew (including Shinso). I also just love him with Kaminari and Kirishima as a trio. I feel like it's underrated. It's such a precious brOTP.

💚OTP: When I first got into BNHA, Tododeku was my first OTP. Still is one of my faves along with so many others. Bakudeku, IzuOcha, etc. Midoriya deserves affection (platonically and romantically, either/or).

💚nOTP: Midoriya x All Might, like who came up with that?

💚Random headcanon: I feel like he's actually a good artist, so at least sharpens his skills overtime. We see he does draw in his journals, but they're messy sketches because well, he's in a hurry to write down info before he forgets it. But I like the thought of him having separate sketchpads he draws in and shares it with Kaminari (who I also headcanon as an artist).

Speaking of notes, I also think he's the type to have color coded notes with sticky notes used as a bookmarks or to jot down extra info.

💚Unpopular opinion: We see him wear those red sneakers all the time, but I like them. I'd wear them. Also, him being emotional is an endearing character trait. I hate how some people in the fandom just label him as a crybaby. No, he just wears his heart on his sleeve. It can be a weakness, you know, letting your emotions get the better of you (I know too well), but it's also a strength sometimes because he still shows he's compassionate towards others.

💚Song I associate with them: 'Go Beyond' by Nemraps which I recommend if any of you into nerdcore raps! Also 'So Am I' by Ava Max and (I do like the music) 'I'll Show You' by KDA.

❄Random headcanon: Maybe this is canon, I don't know, but he can sleep anywhere. I said this with Shinsou, too. I also think he like cold foods more than hot and that he has a sweet tooth. He probably didn't get to eat a lot of sweet foods when he was younger, so when the dorms were made and Satou would bake, Todoroki is one of the first to eat anything he bakes and will fight a classmate over a cookie.

🔥Unpopular opinion: He's so awkward, but it's so adorable. I don't blame him for being awkward (backstory). His little quips like napping whenever or his sense of humor is off is nice for his kind of character. I don't see him as a boring character as some folks say.
