actually shaking right now why did NOBODY tell me about the 1915 Taylor Holmes reading of Rudyard Kipling’s poem ‘Boots’ why did I have to hear about it from a deep dive looking for the source of an instagram audio.

I am BEGGING you. If you’ve never connected much to poetry, never really got it, never much cared: LISTEN TO THIS. Listen to it and understand that this was 1915. They didn’t know what PTSD was. They don’t know what was happening to these boys. They were getting back their young men - 19 and 20 year old boys, and they were wrong, and they didn’t know why. And then they hear this? i. I cannot even describe how viscerally moving this is. You have to hear it yourself.

The voiceover for this trailer is incredible in terms of increasing the tension and apparently this is a recording of American actor Taylor Holmes reciting Rudyard Kipling's poem "Boots" from 1915 and that it's still used in psychological warfare training today!

Boots is a poem by English author and poet Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936). It was first published in 1903, in his collection The Five Nations. "Boots" imagines the repetitive thoughts of a British Army infantryman marching by forced marches in South Africa during the Second Boer War (which had ended in 1902). It has been said that if the first four words in each line are read at the rate of two words to the second, that gives the time to which the British foot soldier was accustomed to march. The 1915 spoken-word recording of the poem by American actor Taylor Holmes has been used for its psychological effect in U.S. military SERE schools. Holmes' recitation was also used for the first trailer for the 2025 zombie apocalypse movie 28 Years Later, directed by Danny Boyle.
