So, while I am happy that Sinners is/has been receiving so much love and acclaim, drawing in a big fanbase and such, a discussion needs to be had. While I normally don't go telling people what to write, there's something deeply unsettling about how certain fics for Sinners are being made. While I don't necessarily mind Remmick fics, as I see the appeal, it's deeply uncomfortable to hear about some writers creating a Remmick x reader, who is the daughter of a slave owner, or having the reader be a part of the Klan (this is wild just to say alone). Sinners features a predominantly Black cast and has a large Black fanbase, some of whom can be found on Tumblr, so imagine this being the case and coming on to this app and seeing someone write such a thing. That, on top of how many instances there are with the Black characters, who are the main characters, being pushed out or written in ways that go past mischaracterization to borderline dehumanizing/stereotypical (the Sammie/Remmick fics being in more abundance than Sammie/Pearline, who often gets ignored or is villainize....tale old as time, but disheartening none the less). Don't even get me started on the incest fics. There's something deeply disturbing about, again, a predominantly Black movie with majority Black characters, being, not only, misinterpreted but also sidelined for the minor white characters, especially when Black people already struggle with attempting to get representation as a community in fandom spaces, let alone on the big screen. And for a movie like Sinners, which holds deep historical ties within the narrative, it makes it even worse to see.

Lord forgive me for paying attention to the YT comments section but I really want people who claim Annie was treated as a less 'desired love interest' than Mary to remind me which of them was told she didn't have any business being near them by both Micheal A and Michael B Jordan.

Are we forgetting that the first thing Stack tells Mary to do is kick rocks? That one of the first things we learned about their past relationship is that he left her in the middle of the night without any communication at all?

Yes Smoke also left Annie but that to me is representative of the fact that both twins always chose each other over either of their respective lovers, or anyone else in their lives. At the very least we know from the fact that he married her that Smoke considered Annie someone in his life, who was not Stack, that he could build a life with. She made him a mojo bag so it's not like Smoke left in the middle of the night.

And it's not like either twin is best friends with the other's lover but Annie clearly gets so much more consideration and respect from Stack than Mary does from Smoke. Smoke would clearly rather Stack and Mary never even have been together in the first place but even from (what was supposed to be) the opening night of the Juke we see Stack and Annie working together to manage Smoke and the business. Annie is being paid to cook there sure, but to me it's clear that she was always supposed to have a huge role in the business.

I'm not saying the movie is perfect or that people can't have their own opinions but even if we're appealing to the respectability argument- Annie is the only person in the main cast apart from Sammie with very little 'sin' on her record. For one thing she's the only woman of the three love interests who isn't cheating on her husband for whatever that's worth to folks in a movie called Sinners.

And even the comparison of the love scenes feels disingenuous to me. I've seen some people say Mary is the one shown to be desired between her and Stack while Smoke is shown to be desired by Annie and I want to remind everyone that again Mary is the person chasing Stack. He saw her that morning and said go back to your white husband. Annie and Smoke are reuniting as a couple that went through a horrible loss that can rip modern couples apart, without the additional stresses of being sharecroppers on top of that.

Additionally I don't think it's a coincidence that the love scene between Smoke and Annie happens before the sun goes down and the one between Stack and Mary - which I remind everyone leads to Stack dying!!- happens after nightfall and after Mary has already been turned by Remmick. Sammie and Stack both talk about that day before the sun went down being one of the best days of their life. Given the connection and parallels between the twins I would assume that the same would probably be true for Smoke.

So one of the best days of his life involved getting to reconnect with his wife. Getting to fold her into a business he and his brother were building not just for their own financial freedom and independence but also as a safe space for their community. A community Annie was a central part of.

One of those love scenes happened between a couple that had a real chance of reconciling if Remmick hadn't shown up and it's not the one featuring Mary.

The guitar everyone wants him to keep a hold of, that he finally breaks to save his life.

And though it’s just a neck and some strings, and his older cousin tells him to bury the damn thing, Sammie holds onto it. Has it rebuilt. Carries it with him for the rest of his life.

Hello I too am here for fae!dick it's getting me through the workweek

One of the Other things I am VERY intrigued by is Too Many Teeth. It feels a little Uncanny Valley to me. Because you see it, you know it's Wrong, but you're not entirely sure why, and even if you could explain it, who is going to believe you?

Dick has too many teeth? OK well how many teeth SHOULD he have? Maybe there are a lot of people out here knowing how many teeth one should have, but are people cracking open their mouths and letting you count them? Maybe his wisdom teeth came in weird. You don't know.

Anyway I don't know if this is in line with any folklore but Dick stealing people's teeth? Like if he whacks someone in the face and a tooth comes out, does he pick it up, dust it off, and stick it in his gums? You had your chance, it's his tooth now? It's not just Too Many Teeth, it's a collection of teeth.

Hehehe okay, some more lore time!

So line in the sand is: there is no line.

There’s no rule to the other beings. The fae creatures I grew up with did not follow any logic. They changed a bit with every retelling of the stories and every time you thought you caught a glimpse of them through the stained glass of the kitchen window they’d have some other feature you’d never heard of or seen before.

So when I say too many teeth I imagine anything from “teeth that look crammed into a human mouth” to “several rows of teeth like a shark’s” depending on what you expect to see and what the other being feels like looking to others on this fine day.

On this note, it would not be too far fetched to imagine Dick would collect teeth like a giggling magpie, only to adorn himself with them or shove them in his own gums when he feels like it.

You know, being a vigilante has the added benefit of being allowed to knock out criminals’ teeth every other night anyway. ✨

idk how much does it fit today's theme but I thought of Veronica's Sire. Back in 1920s (he went by name William Moore back then) he used to work as sheriff's hound and had not very high level of humanity (which went even lower after he murdered the whole mobster gang, that were holding Veronica). But over the time, and time spent with Veronica he regained his humanity back - Veronica is very humane and it usually is transmitted to people close to her. Even tho Veronica's embrace was very spontanious, judged by other toreodors, and honestly William would never pick her as his apprentice for the type of work he was doing - in the end it gave him personal growth he wasn't expecting and didn't know he needed

after 1990s William quit his hound job, Veronica visited him back then and tought him how to use computer and internet (THE FUTURE IS IN THESE TECHNOLOGIES!). It's was hard for 250+ years old vampire to get into it but he managed and it defenetely came in handy

Nowdays they go by name Kellen and decided to come out as nonbinary. They have their own lawyer office, help people, and as former hound sometimes give advice to vampires as well (related to keeping/saving the masquarade etc). Kellen values human life much more than 100 years ago and overal feel more comfortable in their own skin, good for them <3

Rhododendron is the QUEEN of sluts. It will not STOP. Uprooting this fast-growing monstrosity is dick and half a ball because it has strong roots and woody stems; UK conservationists hate this stuff.

The most monstrous slut, Colonel War Crimes of the slut kingdom, is Giant Hogweed. Not ONLY is it voracious, not only is it huge, but this plant is NOXIOUS. You have to sequester it off when you see it and eradicate it in PPE. Actively dangerous just to stand around.

Other sluts are sitka spruces, mile-a-minuteweed, japanese honeysuckle, skunk cabbage... very aggressive invaders. The UK is under seige with invasive species since the island is REALLY unique in its soil chemistry. Once you deacidify it, you have a hard time fixing that.
