Round 1 poll 26: Claudia Kishi from The Baby-Sitters Club vs Sophie Hatter from Howl's Moving Castle
Propaganda under the cut
Claudia Kishi:
she's an artist she's a DIY fashion icon she struggles with school she loves nancy drew mysteries she's a loyal friend!! the claudia kishi club documentary is a great watch that shows how impactful her character as an asian american girl who wasn't a stereotype at the time was really impt
Sophie Hatter:
i think tumblr already knows and loves sophie hatter
Sophie Hatter is absolutely iconic. She’s quiet and soft-spoken, but the moment she becomes and old lady she’s like, might as well fit the role, and instantly starts speaking her mind. She breaks into a wizard’s castle to become his cleaning lady, she pretends to be his mother, she expresses her feelings with weed killer. She can talk magic into things and doesn’t realize Howl is completely head over heels in love with her until he risks his life for her and they proceed to confess to each other by bickering like an old married couple. She’s also the epitome of an eldest sister and I based my entire personality off of her.

Not enough people talk about the power of the Baby-Sitters Club.
I read th books when I was 10-11 or so, in the early 90s. I was the only boy who read them in my universe. I read them because they were books, and I didn't care about being weird.
Other boys (and more than a few girls (as far as I know, all my peers were boys and girls and still are, wherever they are) teased me about it.
I don't remember a single adult bothering me about it. My parents bought me almost every single book I ever wanted, and teachers didn't seem to care. I was 'special' in one of those complicated and coded ways. And so adults treated me like I was fine to do my thing until I was someone else's concern.
Anyway, I loved the books until I guess I outgrew them. I loved those girls. They had great ideas, they loved each other even when it was hard, they struggled, and they all felt real and important.
The Netflix show nails that. I hadn't read the books in well over 25 years. And I felt the importance of those stories come back. The fear of being the new kid like Dawn (who was so beyond fear) or Stacey (who was more popular than I'd ever dream of being.) The burden of being smart and capable like Kristy, the recurring isolation of being a nerd like Mary Anne, or the "differentness" of Claudia (she was the main (and I would argue NOT token) non-white character, but I identified with her in other ways.)
In addition to the things discussed in the post above, the characterizations of all the characters in the show was amazing. The neurodiversities, queerness, and other '"modern" or "grown-up" things were always there in the books. But the show manifested them.
It meant a lot. It's a good show, and I wish it had lasted longer. Ann M. Martin deserves a place among the icons.
I need to say something and I need y'all to be calm
if it isn't actively bad or harmful, no representation should be called "too simple" or "too surface level"
I have a whole argument for this about the barbie movie but today I wanna talk about a show called "the babysitters club" on Netflix
(obligatory disclaimer that I watched only two episodes of this show so if it's super problematic I'm sorry) (yes. I know it's based on a book, this is about the show)
this is a silly 8+ show that my 9 year old sister is watching and it manages to tackle so many complex topics in such an easy way. basic premise is these 13 year old girls have a babysitting agency.
in one episode, a girl babysits this transfem kid. the approach is super simple, with the kid saying stuff like "oh no, those are my old boy clothes, these are my girl clothes". they have to go to the doctor and everyone is calling the kid by her dead name and using he/him and this 13 year old snaps at like a group of doctors and they all listen to her. it's pure fantasy and any person versed in trans theory would point out a bunch of mistakes.
but after watching this episode, my little sister started switching to my name instead of my dead name and intercalating he/him pronouns when talking about me.
one of the 13 years old is a diabetic and sometimes her whole personality is taken over by that. but she has this episode where she pushes herself to her limit and passes out and talks about being in a coma for a while because of not recognizing the limits of her disability.
and this allowed my 9 year old sister to understand me better when I say "I really want to play with you but right now my body physically can't do that" (I'm disabled). she has even asked me why I'm pushing myself, why I'm not using my crutches when I complain about pain.
my mom is 50 years old and watching this show with my sister. she said the episode about the diabetic girl helped her understand me and my disability better. she grew up disabled as well, but she was taught to shut up and power through.
yes, silly simple representation can annoy you if you've read thousands of pages about queer liberation or disability radical thought, but sometimes things are not for you.

one of my booktubers has been reading books from every year since she was born so i decided to look up what i might read if i did that and 1986 was kind of stacked?? (because of the cocaine, i assume)
to say a stephen king novel was published in a given year is like, name any year since 1974 apart from 2020. most years he was publishing more than one. so it’s not that impressive, and this year he “only” published one, but it was it, which has surely got to be top five most iconic
not much different for diana wynne jones whom i miss every day but this was the year that gave us howl’s moving castle, which thanks to miyazaki is definitively her best-known and most popular work.
the first volume of watchmen was published this year
as was all of frank miller’s the dark knight returns
the first baby-sitters club books
AND the first sweet valley twins books
AND the first american girl books, with three each for samantha, molly, and my favorite kirsten
AND the first magic school bus book which unlike the others was not a series i read but still, the launching of another iconic childhood book series
the first volume of maus (published only chapter by chapter in a magazine to that point)
the first redwall
the third book of tammy pierce’s first series song of the lioness
the second ever discworld
(second books/volumes both for ender’s game and dragon ball but those feel less impressive—i guess the anime for the latter also started this year?)
the hellbound heart (aka hellraiser)
burning chrome by william gibson (the collection)
more inspirations for films: forrest gump (yeah that was a book, no you shouldn’t read it), and fincher’s zodiac
probably of interest mainly to me but wait till helen comes by mary downing hahn, this is probably her best-known work
and of course tons of 80s staples who like king were putting out one or more books every year at the time but none of them particularly stuck out to me as being noteworthy, but they were there
#i’m sure you could put together a list like this for virtually any year#but they probably wouldn’t have the first book of FOUR iconic children’s series in them#anyway a fun exercise#deep thoughts

Her tip number one: Bring out new toys and activities at the airport, “anything that they’ve never seen before,” she says. “Like a Mary Poppins bag, I just start pulling things out and they get so excited that usually, I get 30 minutes or an hour of their attention.”
Rocha also shared that her 2-year-old daughter, Iley, is the hardest to keep entertained while traveling.
“She’s the one that we buy the new goodies for, really, and then the other two are always like, ‘Well, what does she have? I need it!’” One of the goodies that Rocha swears by are Melissa & Doug reusable sticker activity books, which her kids love to peel and stick on airplane windows.
Beyond travel tips, Rocha shared more of her must-have parenting essentials with SheKnows. She revealed the one snack her kids all eat and the books they gobble up, proving that she truly is a supermom who has it all figured out.
