It's the third furtive glance Akechi has shot him in as many minutes. Ren bites his lip on a smile.

He looks---well, he hopes he looks pretty, but he knows he looks different. Anyone who didn't know Ren exceptionally well likely wouldn't recognise him unless he spoke, and even then, it's not a sure thing. Morgana would know. Sojiro might know. And of course Ann already knows, given she'd been doing his makeup for weeks before he'd got the hang of it.

Akechi? A wild card. He thinks he might know. Ren watches his eyes dart over again, assessing. It's harder at a distance, and Akechi's at a table across the room. The thing that's stopping him from coming over is that if he's wrong, and even if he's right, he'll need to explain to his party why he crossed the floor to speak to the lady at the bar serving drinks when he has a full glass of wine sat right in front of him being topped off every thirty seconds.

This, at least, is Ren's working theory. Akechi takes another frustrated sip.

Maybe Ren puts him out of his misery. Someone at the next table's ordered a dish of olives anyhow.

Thanks to Joker: Ren doesn't have any issues with heels. He even manages to put a little sway in his hips as he sashays over with his tray. The olive guy stammers out his thanks and Ren winks at him for his trouble. The glitter on his lashes winks too, subtle in the low light.

Then, ever the picturesque host, he leans over Akechi's table. Softens his voice to an understated croon: "How is everything?"

"Yes, yes, fine," says one of the politicians he's hanging around, almost dismissive. He's too distracted by the promise of a lucrative deal to look Ren up and down the way Akechi is doing. Akechi manages, somehow, to stammer with his eyes.

Ren says, "You all right with your drink, honey?"

It's a bit of a trap, this; a bit of a trick. See, Akechi knows Ren's eyes too well. They're a dead giveaway. He also, though, knows what Ren does with them---so if Ren looks away in the way he always does to hide them, Akechi will know that, too.

So Ren leans in instead. Waits for Akechi's throat to bob and his eyes to flitter to Ren's red-painted lips for their proximity alone.

"Careful there, handsome," Ren breathes. "Keep your eyes down. Ain't safe."

Now a smile ghosts Akechi's lips. Ah, well. Plenty of fun to be had still from a failed gambit.

Akechi tips his glass. "I'm set, I'm afraid," he says, keeping his voice just as low. "If you have recommendations, though, I'm sure I could forfeit the wine to earn your favour."

"Might take more'n that."

"Since when do you say 'ain't'?" Akechi murmurs in his ear.

Ren bites his lip again. Akechi's eyes follow the motion. "I got a show to put on, honey," Ren says. He takes the lipstick out from the crease in his sash and pops the cap. Can't keep biting off his war paint whenever he wants to laugh.

"I won't endanger it, then," Akechi says. "Is it crass of me to tell you that you look nice?"

"Nuh-uh."

"Then you look nice," Akechi says. "And I'll have a cocktail, please."

"Any which one?"

Slowly, deliberately, Akechi plucks the lipstick from his hands. Ren purses his lips; with a soft swipe, Akechi replaces the red.

"Lady's choice," he says.

I'm not very familiar with persona beyond tumblr cultural osmosis, so I did not know until I published it and people told me. I'll check submissions more thoroughly in the future. I'm not going to delete it though, because I don't want to mess up my numbers.
