chapter 10

spoilers for veilguard, observations from where I'm at in the game

I am playing as rogue elf Shadow Dragon and I am really enjoying the background and all the characters brought onboard for the Minrathous zone

I am still having fun with the combat, playing on Adenturer mode, and I have embraced the detonation-focused play style. I rarely use the block mechanic. I prefer dodging and flanking, (probably fitting for a rogue).

I am checking in with all companions very frequently at the Lighthouse and completing all companion quests and side quests (for all games, i always go with a completionist approach, finishing all quests, looting every lootable, etc). But I'm really curious what happens to these characters if the companion quests go uncompleted... when I'm done, I'll read about that

Solas's story, the Minrathous story, and the Wardens are my favorite pieces of the whole. (I just met Valya and was happy to see another book character show up to connect us back to the Fifth Blight and what happened to the griffons with Garahel and Isseya...)

I want to like the Emmrich story, but it's falling a little short for me. I think it's because we're getting a ton of stuff about the Mourn Watch and it's a landscape I might have imagined differently if I'd been tasked with writing it. I think I would have emphasized the political power of the Mortalitasi if I'd been given that story, in ways that drew parallels and contrasts with the Crows and the Venatori... and served as a commentary about the nature of these different societies we get to visit...

A writing critique: There is a lot of duplicative telling. Multiple people get to hear the same tidbit of information in different conversations. As I writer, I try to edit that out whenever I can. The audience only needs it once...

I didn't go with either of the romances I was thinking about in the earlier part of the game. I liked the dynamic with my Rook and Davrin, so that's the one I'm playing

If Magnus was being honest, he hadn’t been keeping up with his teammates as much as he should have been. Yes, they trained together almost every day. The Director’s been pushing down harder on them and there’s no room to question that the next mission will be the hardest one yet. He hasn’t swum with the Voidfish again and wasn’t sure he wants to. Plus, between all of that , he had been trying to keep up with his rogue training with Carey. So it makes sense that he and his buds haven’t had a chance to hang out.

Merle’s been going off base to visit his kids in secret, though it’s not really a secret. Magnus had discovered their existence by accident- he had been doing rouge training and everyone knew it was a bad idea to try to steal from Taako, so he stole Merle’s wallet instead. Inside was a photograph of Merle and a stern-looking dwarf woman. The woman had her hand on a young dwarf girl’s shoulder and Merle was holding a bundle of blankets that barely looked like a young dwarf boy. Magnus didn’t bring it up when he returned the wallet, but he knew, and Merle knew he knew.

Taako was- if he was being honest, Magnus hadn’t known what the fuck Taako got up to most days until Angus broke the news to him: Taako had a boyfriend. Magnus didn’t mind, of course. What he did mind is waking up one morning and running face into said boyfriend and realizing, oh, hey, that was the guy who had tried to kill them a few months ago!

“What the fuck,” Magnus said.

“Oh, uh-” Ke- Kr- Kratu?? Kevin?? What was his name again- Kravitz? Kravitz, probably. “Hi, Magnus.”

“What the fuck?” Magnus repeated.
