2024 / 45
Aperçu of the week
"Latinos are Republican. They just don't know it yet."
(Ronald Reagan, actor and US-American politician of the Republican Party who served as the 40th president of the United States from 1981 to 1989)
Bad News of the Week
What has the self-luminous circulation guidance system not been used for: traffic lights. Because of them, we associate green with go and red with stop (and yellow with attention). Parties are also often associated with colors. So it's no wonder that the coalition of Social Democrats (red), Liberals (yellow) and Greens (guess what!) was also called "traffic lights coalition". "Was" because the traffic light has been history since last week. This is because the red Chancellor Olaf Scholz kicked the yellow Finance Minister Christian Lindner out of the cabinet. Whereupon the Liberals (naturally) left the coalition.
Since then, the term "Broken traffic light" has been used. Which sounds just as uncharming as a traffic accident. The traffic lights had been crunching for some time. This coalition was never a love match. Many political observers saw the end coming, there was talk of an "autumn of decisions". It should be noted that Olaf Scholz's last political job was finance minister (under the conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel). And both the very former and the recently former finance ministers have always agreed on one thing: that they think they are by far the smartest in the room. No wonder that the final stumbling block was a financial one, namely the budget.
"The government is finished and will no longer govern. That sounds insultingly banal, but because the last time a coalition broke up was 42 years ago and the last time the legislature was shortened was 20 years ago, it's a big deal when it happens," writes the news magazine Der Spiegel. This is why a cold, paralyzing fog has descended over the country just in time for the appropriate season - there is a standstill. The early elections are scheduled for February 23, 2025. Until then, the legislative apparatus will be largely dormant, as there seems to be no will to cooperate across party lines. And any new government must first find itself (it will be a coalition again) will first need time to define a program and put it into legislation.
Germany currently has no budget plan for 2025. In the USA, such a status would probably lead to a complete government shutdown. Fortunately, it cannot get that far in this country. Nevertheless, there will be virtually no government action. For minimum half a year. In the world's third-largest economy. At a time when we are sliding into recession. If someone had asked me the week before last to draw up a horror scenario for the near future, this is pretty much what I would have come up with. Not good.
Good News of the Week
The Berlin Wall came down 35 years ago. Euphoria is certainly not a typical trait that can be attributed to Germans. And yet it was the predominant feeling that we otherwise only know from winning a soccer championship. In Berlin, strangers hugged each other, cheered and sang together. After the first tentative rapprochement - the escape of around 4,000 GDR citizens via the West German embassy in Prague - this marked the beginning of what had seemed impossible shortly before: the end of the Cold War.
The so-called fall of the Berlin Wall was the starting signal for German reunification, the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Or to put it another way: the West finally triumphed over the East. Which was, of course, presumptuous and arrogant at the time and proved to be a fatal historical blunder. After all, there would be no Vladimir Putin today, tearing apart a former brother nation, or a Viktor Orbán, who created the guide "How to create an autocracy in a democracy", if "the West" had not only opened the door to the Eastern Europeans, but also extended a hand.
Nevertheless, the day the Wall fell is and was a day of joy. The Wall did not actually fall on that day. Rather, thousands of East Berliners spontaneously set off to visit the West when Günter Schabowski, Secretary for Information, more or less coincidentally announced in a televised press conference that lighter travel restrictions would apply "immediately, without delay". And the officers on guard duty in the completely uninformed border troops had the sense not to shoot at the masses of people coming towards them, but simply to hold back. In the weeks-long party that followed, the Wall actually fell piece by piece - by diggers as well as souvenir hunters with hammers and chisels.
And even if the achievements of this liberation at the beginning of the 1990s are questioned by one or two politicians and not recognized or even forgotten by one or two voters, this does not change the basic principle: it was a liberation. You can give it up again of your own free will. But at least you held it in your hand once. After all, a real democracy can only abolish itself.
Personal happy moment of the week
Breaking News: I broke a rib. I won't tell you how, just this much: it wasn't anything heroic like "You should see the other guy!". Fortunately, the broken rib stayed in place and didn't damage my lungs or any other organ. Now I'll only be in pain for a good four weeks (I can't stop breathing obviously) and I won't sleep well because I'm bound to move the wrong way unconsciously. But still: that qualifies for a lucky moment. Not a happy one, okay...
I couldn't care less...
...that many criticize the credibility of an environmental summit in a fossil fuel exporting country. The main thing is that COP29 takes place. Because the EU climate change service Copernicus has just issued a forecast: 2024 is likely to be the first year since records began in which the average temperature will be more than 1.5 degrees warmer than the pre-industrial average. This is the defined maximum level of global warming in order to still have a chance of avoiding radical tipping points in the global climate. If there are (or should be, let's be realistic) tangible successes, someone who actually contributes too little to this can proudly announce them in the Azerbaijani capital Baku: autocrat Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev.
It's fine with me...
...that the Self-Determination Act is now officially in force in Germany. This means that fellow human beings who were born in the wrong body finally have exactly that: the right to self-determination. Without shameful questioning, expensive expert opinions and lengthy bureaucracy. In this case, thanks to Justice Minister Marco Buschmann, who is no longer in office as a Liberal minister (see "Broken traffic light").
Post Scriptum
Okay, I held out ignoring the elephant in the room until the last column. But now it has to come out: a majority of the US electorate has decided to give Donald Trump a second term. Despite, or perhaps because of, the fact that he didn't mince his words. Because they knew exactly which personality with which values would get the keys to the White House. You don't even have to read the Heritage Foundation's "Project 2025" to find out, just listen to Trump himself. As tech billionnaire Peter Thiel famously put it eight years ago: You have to take Trump seriously but not literally.
This was almost a landslide victory: Trump not only took the majority of electoral votes by a large margin, but also won the popular vote. The Republicans have already won the majority in the Senate and a majority in the House of Representatives is practically guaranteed. With the Supreme Court already in their pocket, this is an unprecedented concentration of power. The dust has not yet settled. And I still don't know exactly how to categorize some aspects of it. So here is a loose collection of my thoughts and those of others.
"Of course I had suspected it, not only feared it, but deep down even knew that it would happen again. But you can still hope, against all odds. What else can you do? We had no choice. We are just spectators." Stefan Kuzmany in Der Spiegel.
The first personnel decisions about Trump's possible cabinet are making the rounds, with only Mike Pompeo and Nikki Haley being ruled out so far. Conspiracy theorist and avowed anti-vaccinationist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is to take charge of health. And Elon Musk is to become head of a still not existing economic commission. And announces that he could easily cut the entire state budget by 2 trillion - that's almost a third. As head of a Department of Government Efficiency he promises no less than "fixing the government". Perhaps most glaring, however, is the choice of Fox News host Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense - who has no administrative, political or national security experience. But seemes to be a sexist asshole.
Election winner Trump is the first US president to enter the White House as a convicted felon. The sentence was due to be announced at the end of November. What will become of it - and of the other criminal proceedings against him? Nothing, of course. He can simply order the termination of some proceedings by having the Department of Justice fire the responsible special investigator. And others will simply be suspended until the President is no longer sitting. Doesn't that sound more like a Banana Republic?
"The racist, agitator and misogynist Donald Trump returns to the White House. A disaster - to which we in Germany are not immune. (...) You are probably just as stunned as I am: Donald Trump becomes US president again. A fascist. A liar and demagogue. And one who announces in no uncertain terms what he intends to do: rebuild and destroy the oldest democracy much more extensively and systematically than in his unprepared first term." Christoph Bautz, Chairman of the democratic activist association Campact.
"It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them. While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change. And they're right." Bernie Sanders (who is officially an independent senator) on Twitter (I still refuse to call it X).

WH Retelling Reviews #1
Day 1 of Reviewing Really Bad Wuthering Heights Retellings- YA Edition
(Okay so I’ve thought about how I’d go about giving these reviews since there’s a lot to unpack and I have a lot to say SO I’ll be doing one bad review per day that covers everything you need to know about the adaption under review)
YA Modern Retelling: Catherine
Author: April Lindner
Released: 2013 (I think)
Plot: So the moors are swapped out for the grungy New York rock scene at the height of cocaine fashion and 90s grit grunge. Catherine is a young girl attending private school whose dad owns one the most iconic clubs called The Underground - seriously any band or musician worth their salt that ever walked the Earth has had the privilege of playing there so it’s music royalty. She has a brother, a hardcore party drunk (Hindley) who is as racist as you’d expect in the 90s. Real Trump energy. Anyways one day after walking home form school, Cath sees this dirty, ragged teenage boy with just a bag and his guitar outside her dads club. She manages to convince her dad to give Hence a job and the basement to stay.  Cathy tries to befriend him yet he is hesitant and wary as if he doesn’t know what she would ever want to do with him, however this ice is broken after Hence saves her from being raped and almost kills the rapist. Really the initial stages of their relationship are very insta love sweet but the more the relationship progresses the more I got annoyed with it, yes he’s sweet and gentle with her but Cathy for some reason seems to tip toe around him terrified to tell him her hopes and dreams which makes 0 sense since he’s never given her a reason to fear him (seriously hes very sweet and loving). Whats worse is that 90% of the relationship revolves around Hence and his dreams and ambitions and she’s just on the sidelines. This is down to two things: 1) Cathy is very scared to tell him about her own dreams and aspirations (which makes 0 sense) so she puts her ambitions to the side and focuses solely on him which gives 2) Hence the impression that her world revolves around him and takes her for granted, he never once shows any interest to her future or dreams - its like she’s his emotional support gf. she goes from spunky feminist to stepford girlfriend.
Hence starts to take her for granted and he’s so oblivious to her own dreams and goals or her own identity to the point where when she finally tells him she plans to go to Harvard he’s ‘blindsided’ and they start arguing bc he feels like she’s choosing her dreams over him YET he expected her to be happy being in his shadows? He becomes very selfish and annoying. Cathy herself even describes herself and her role In the relationship to be “ever the supportive girlfriend, I was not there to have fun I was there for him” EW.
After their fight she goes to best friend who tells her she should break up with him if he’s not supportive or cares about her dreams, Cathy admits he doesn’t - Hence over hears this and flees but not to disappear for 3 years nooo he fleees to go and CHEAT on her with a desperate groupie that he knows Cathy hated. Cathy literally finds them in bed together and they both laugh at her, Hence believes she deserves it for not giving up her dreams for him. After that she leaves to go to Harvard and follow her dreams where she meets the Edgar of the story and dates him, falls pregnant and marries him. Hence finds out and marries the desperate groupie as revenge. Halfway through her marriage Hence contacts her asking for her to come back saying life is shit without her etc, she does come back but never ends up meeting her bc she mysteriously disappears.
This isnt Wuthering Heights AT ALL. Infact the only time I felt Hence was Heathcliff like was in the latter part of the book where he the older haunted man longing for Cathy. Yes he was very much the puppy dog to Catherine but  it lacked the devotion and passion, it seemed the way he was devoted to his music was more like how Heathcliff was devoted to Cathy. Catherine read as a COMPLETE Isabella. There’s a lot of changes and twists and turns but none of it saves this ridiculous book. In the original Cathy couldn’t marry Heathcliff because he didn’t have money + status and he left to make himself what she wanted (note that’s the only reason) - he didn’t run off and cheat on her and expect her to give up what she wanted yet here Hence cheats and plays victim acting as if Catherine left him to be a rich girl snob bc she wouldn’t give up college for him. I see this trope often, authors trying to modernize the plot by equating the original reason Cath won’t marry Heath for ‘H won’t let C follow her dreams’ - it doesn’t work because it changes the very nature of their relationship dynamic, plot and characters. The author claims this is a ‘retelling’ - MAAM OF WHAT? Certainly not WH. No this is better sold as a warning guide for girls who wanna date musicians - Don’t do it.

JUSTIN BROWN
Tumblr media
Justin Brown is a drummer and composer from Oakland, California. His journey so far has seen him play with a multitude of artists including Thundercat, Herbie Hancock, Flying Lotus, Esperanza Spalding, Kenny Garrett and, most recently, touring in Europe with bassist Ben Williams.
Always tasteful in his approach and execution, Justin's style is progressive and virtuosic yet extremely musical. He began playing drums at a young age and later graduated to playing in clubs by his early teens, before studying at the Manhattan School of Music.
Justin has recently returned to California after being a longtime resident of New York City, where he had initially moved as a student before becoming an active participant in the city's eclectic music scene. In 2018 he released his first album as a bandleader under the name Nyeusi which gained high accolades from both the New York Times and NPR's Simon Rentner. The album sits at the intersection of jazz fusion and hip-hop, managing to sound both vintage and incredibly modern at the same time. It features a selection of luminary musicians from the New York jazz scene including Jason Lindner (★) and Fabian Almazan and is available to download here
NYEUSI by Justin Brown
SIGHT/SOUND/RHYTHM spoke with Justin before a show in Vienna, Austria to talk about his musical background and upbringing, connecting the line between some of his many collaborations, and submitting to the music.
You just moved back to California after 13 years in New York. What prompted that move for you?
Well, two things. The main thing was family. My mother is getting older, plus I also have a fifteen year old nephew and I really want to be more involved in his life.
There's no place like New York as far as the music scene, which is what drew me there, but it was just the day to day living that I tapped out on. Just the thought of getting on the train and dealing with all of those energies in a compact space... I just needed a bit more balance, for my own sanity.
So those were the main reasons, but I also have a ton of friends in LA, too, that were pulling me there.
L.A. is the type of place where you can't really beat the quality of living. I might be spending the same amount as far as rent goes but I have more time and I'm able to balance out my day a little bit more. Plus the sun is always out so it's easier on the body and brain.
What are the things that you've valued the most by being between New York and L.A.? Does one feel like a better fit than the other?
That's a good question. Well, I've mainly valued the music. Being in New York I feel like I developed faster, just because it's 24/7 and a lot of the guys that I looked up to and wanted to be around were in New York. By being there I found out who I was and what I actually wanted to do. Also, I always wanted to be involved in more than one thing and New York was the place for me to do that. Whether I wanted to play gospel music, or jazz, or hip hop, it was all happening in that space. I feel like New York made me a little stronger.
L.A. has a beautiful music scene. It's a little more close knit because you have a lot of people who are from there and who grow up with each other. It's almost like these little pockets of families who grow up with this musical journey.
It feels as though it's a little more open now, especially with a lot of the younger dudes, where you get into playing more jazz and experimental music. Although it is still a part of it, it's just not as studio focused. On the flip side of that, L.A. is teaching me a lot about the studio because it's sort of the mecca for that. I'm learning lots about mics and EQs.
I do feel like the two places are still connected. I used to say that if you wanted to become a hardcore musician then you move to New York, and if you wanted to have more stability then you'd move to L.A., but it's changing, mainly because of the younger generation and having access to the internet.
What was your experience like growing up as a kid?
Well, being in the Bay Area, there was a vast amount of artistry, from Tower of Power, to Sly and the Family Stone, from the Black Panther movement to the Hawkins Family. It was really cool to be in an environment where art was prominent.
I was fortunate to go to Berkeley High School where I met Thomas Pridgen and a lot of other amazing musicians. Even though it was a public school, the school band was really good and it had this stature for being one of the best in the country. That school was just a bunch of creatives.
I was there with Daveed Diggs, who was in Hamilton, as well as Chinaka Hodges. There were a bunch of different creatives there and that was really cool to be around. There were also outreach programs like the Young Musician's Program, which is a summer school at the University of California, Berkeley for kids under eighteen and they're basically teaching you at a college level. From being there, and being around the people that I grew up with, I knew what I wanted to pursue. I knew as a kid that I had a talent but I didn't start to exude in it until after I left the Bay Area.
I was very active in music, plus my mother is also a gospel musician, so I was learning a lot. I was fortunate enough to have good parents who helped me to cultivate my craft and I'm very thankful for having been in that environment. I had opportunities to play small gigs. I really commend my mother because from the ages of thirteen to fifteen, she used to let me play at late night clubs and she'd come pick me up at two in the morning. I'm very fortunate that she allowed me to have that outlet.
That's some good parenting.
Yeah! She's a musician as well so she saw an opportunity for me to go in a direction that she didn't really go in. She would go out on tour but it was a struggle because she wanted to be at home with the family. Whenever I wanted to practice or hang out with musicians or go to shows, she was always there to take me. At a young age I got to see a lot of guys playing who would be coming through the Bay Area, like Dennis Chambers and Brian Blade.
youtube
You've been friends with Thomas Pridgen for a long time.
Yeah, we grew up together. I met Thomas when I was 8, and I think he was 9. I actually just talked to him earlier. To this day he's like my brother. I'm fortunate enough to have grown up with a guy like that, especially with playing drums.
Were you learning from each other?
Man, he was at such a high level that I was learning from him, for sure. He had access to a lot of the guys that we were watching and he was exposed to the instrument at a very young age. I think the most that I gained from Thomas was how to find yourself through the instrument and how to really dedicate yourself to the craft. We used to cut high school together to go shed the whole day. We'd meet up at school, go to his house to play drums, and then go back to school for band. (laughs)
I also met Ronald Bruner through Thomas. I remember that Thomas would call Ronald and they would play drums over the phone! Those two are my brothers for sure.
Is Ronald still playing with Kamasi Washington?
Yeah, he is. I'm not sure what Thomas is doing right now but he does everything. I know that he was playing with Residente and before that Trash Talk. He's playing a lot in the bay area and he's always super active. I got to see him play with The Mars Volta and that was unreal.
Yeah. All of the drummers who have passed through that band have been phenomenal.
Yeah! Jon Theodore, Deantoni Parks, Thomas, Dave Elitch. All special dudes, for sure.
When you left the Bay Area, did you go straight to New York?
Not right away. I ended up auditioning for the Dave Brubeck Institute, which is at the University of Pacific, in Stockton, California. So I studied there for two years before moving to New York, which was actually a smart move because when I look back on myself at eighteen, I wouldn't have been ready for New York, as a human and as a musician.
It was cool to still be somewhat closer to home and to still be able to take the time to really figure it out. Eric Moore also lived in Stockton, California so I became really good buddies with him. He was my shed partner and we played drums every single day. Being there allowed me to really focus in on the instrument and that's where it hit me that I wanted to do this.
I learned that in order to be good you had to put in the time and the work. So that put me in a really good space and it became a habit of me just trying to get better.
Was it after studying in California that you went to the Julliard School for Music in New York?
I auditioned for the New School and Julliard, where I ended up getting a full scholarship. Once I saw the curriculum though I realised that it wasn't for me. Their curriculum was something that I had already been through, with all of my studies at high school and also at the Brubeck Institute.
I actually dropped out on the first day of school. I woke up and just thought, 'I can't do this'. I didn't even go to class, I went straight to the Dean and told him that it wasn't for me.
At the time there were so many musicians that I looked up to, from Steve Coleman to Yosvany Terry to Josh Roseman... I mean, Steve Coleman had a workshop every Monday at the Jazz Gallery and I used to go there and study. Then it was really about playing and learning what that experience was like, so I dropped out of school. It was the best thing for me because I was just ready to play.
That was a smart move.
Yeah. I mean, sometimes I look back on it and it probably would've been easy to go back to school and to get a degree and get my masters but I wasn't in that headspace. I was ready to play and I was on a mission to try to get better. So I dropped out of Julliard and spent one year in New York working. I got a day job at Guitar Centre just so I could survive. After six months I thought, 'if I'm really going to do this, I just have to fall face first'. I had to be involved in anything and everything that I could, from a restaurant gig to a jazz gig. I knew it was going to be really hard but I had to do it.
After that first year there I ended up going back to school. I went to the Manhattan School for Music and that's when I met other cool musicians and started to build a name for myself. While I was in school I got the call play with Kenny Garrett and after that I started touring.
After leaving Julliard and taking a year to work, do you feel like you benefitted from not fully going down the academic route at that point?
Absolutely. It felt like a better move for me to do that.
I still consider myself to be a jazz musician, and in New York you still have the masters there who are the great practitioners of this music. I was going to shows and sitting right up under the drums and watching everyone from Brian Blade to Billy Hart, and I even got see Max Roach when he was still around. So it was about going to check out the masters, asking them questions and really learning about the culture.
If I was doing a hip hop gig, I was going to the hip hop clubs and asking Rich Medina what albums to check out. CBGBs was still around, so I got to and see what that was like and to experience that. So it was about learning the culture of each music and I feel like that's something that they aren't going to teach you in school. It's something you have to find for yourself.
What would you like to see implemented in music education that wasn't present when you were studying, or that you feel is just absent?
That's a really good question. I think allowing more students the opportunity to check out the masters. They need to be bringing in people who have the real experience and not just a teacher who went to school, learned the methods and then says, 'here's how to be a jazz musician'. That's not the way to do it.
Colleges bring in master musicians but it's only a minuscule part of the thing. It'd be great to be able to call someone like Billy Hart and to take students to them, to see the show. Also, it's an economic game. Berkley and the Manhattan School for Music have the money to do it but I think it's really about grabbing a hold of the experience. You're not going to really grow unless you're out there doing it. You can be taught a bunch of theory but to be in the moment and playing is where it's at.

You've collaborated with a multitude of different artists including Flying Lotus, Thundercat and Esperanza Spalding, How have you found it adapting to all of those different situations?
It's all about connecting the line. They're all unique individuals but they're also very like-minded. They're vessels submitting to this music and they're all willing to grow. I feel like the more music you go and check out, the easier it is to connect the dots and be able to adapt.
I learned that I would play differently in certain situations, whether I was playing with Esperanza Spalding or Thundercat, but it was really all about submitting to the music and setting a foundation to make things feel good. It's all music and I just want to be able to bring out the characteristics of what the artist is trying to say. At the end of the day it's about having the mindset that it's really not about me. It's about a bigger picture and to be a vessel in a way that gives someone hope or inspiration throughout their daily life.
The physical aspect between the people I play with can also be different. Once I started playing with Thundercat, I knew that I could play in that style but I knew that I didn't have the physical capability and stamina to do it. So I had to go back to the drawing board in some ways. I even went to Thomas (Pridgen) and asked him, 'how do you not get tired playing these gigs?' He told me that not only do you have to play like that in your practice but you have to take care of yourself by getting proper sleep, drinking a lot of water and stretching. Over time it became easier.
I had a regimen within my practice where I would work on independence and groove, but then it just became about playing and getting my body in the flow. It takes a lot of patience to understand what works and how your body reacts to certain things, like when you play from fast to slow. Trying to relax the mind and body within that. It really comes down to submitting to it.
So it's mainly been the physical changes between gigs that I've had to adapt to more than the musical ones. I guess there are stylistic things which are different. I mean, with Esperanza it'll be sort of samba and bossanova, but with Thundercat it's more backbeat rock. Essentially it's about grooving, making the music feel good and always being open to learning. I try not to be single-minded in music, because the more things you're able to expose yourself to, the greater the musical language is that you can draw from. It's about always being 100% in it. Always checking out music and going to shows. Always talking about music, and just being a musical nerd. The more experience you get the more natural it becomes.
You played with Herbie Hancock. What was it like getting that call?
Bro. That was crazy. Playing with Herbie was a surreal experience. He's been a major influence on me throughout my musical journey so it was a dream come true.
I think it was Terrence Martin that recommended me. I got the call and did the rehearsal... I rarely get nervous but I was starstruck. I couldn't believe it was happening. For the first few days of the tour, it took me a little while to get over the hump. Like, 'oh, man, I'm on an airplane with Herbie Hancock! I'm eating with Herbie Hancock!' (laughs) On the third or forth day he walked up to me and said, 'Yo, Justin! You've been killing it these last few days!' And it just kind of took a load off me, because he was cool and he was feeling what I was doing.
I got to ask him a bunch of questions about Miles (Davis) and Tony (Williams). He actually told me that Tony played with John Coltrane, which was mind boggling to me.
What period would this have been in?
This would have been in the '60s. Herbie was really good friends with Tony, so I asked him: 'Man, did Tony ever play with Coltrane?' and he said that, yes, he did. There was a week at Birdland where something had happened with Elvin (Jones), where I think he might have got arrested, I believe. So Coltrane asked Tony to play that whole week. I asked Herbie, 'Are there any recordings of it?' and he said, “Yeah. I believe his wife has the recordings.” So it was documented.
Herbie never heard the recordings but he saw Tony afterwards and he said that Coltrane was the reason why Tony switched to playing with bigger sticks. Coltrane had so much stamina from playing as much as he did that Tony wanted to get on that same level. This was in the '60s, so already early on he was trying to get more energy and more power after playing with Coltrane. So that was a really cool moment that he shared with me.
Herbie's full spectrum, on a musical level and on a human level. He's extremely open and is very technically minded. We were all sitting at the dinner table one night and we're taking pictures on our phones. Herbie walks up and says, “you guys want to see something? You ever seen a 3D camera phone?” A company called Red made the first 3D camera phone and they sent him the first one. He was like, “yeah, they sent me the aluminium one. I asked for the titanium one, so that'll be waiting for me when I get back!” He's always been that guy. When Sony first started making CDs, they called him. When Midi was first starting to be used, he was one of the first guys to know about it. So it was just really cool to be in that space. I got to chat to him everyday.
He's not going back but he's moving forward into the beyond. I'll definitely cherish that moment [of playing with him] for the rest of my life. I knew going into it that I had be humble; to be thankful and learn as much as I could from Herbie. It definitely made me a better musician and a better human, just from that one month on the road with him. Just seeing how focused he is... it was unreal.
What have been some of the milestones in your playing that have pushed you creatively?
Meeting Herbie was definitely a milestone for me. Anytime I get to talk to one of the masters, I feel like that makes me a stronger human and a stronger musician. It makes me more confident in what I want to achieve. Playing with Kenny Garrett... as well as being able to play with my peers, you know. It's really cool to just be able to grow together.
The day I heard Caravan by Art Blakey when I was ten years old blew my mind. Just hearing how he played the drums and how much authority he had over the instrument was one of those moments where I thought, 'oh, so that's how you do it!'
For me it's about adapting to the energy of the room and being open in that sense as to how I can inspire someone. It goes back to submitting to the music. All of the practice, as well as checking out videos and seeing drummers live definitely helps, but I also want to be a musician that is completely in the moment. I don't ever want to go onto the bandstand thinking that I know what's going to happen. I want to have a mindset that is ready to expect the unexpected and to always play what is called for in the music. You have to be able to open yourself up to what's going to come out naturally and not try to force anything to come out.
All of those things have made me a better musician.
What's something that you've been paying attention to recently that's been inspiring you, either musically or non-musicially?
Well, I'm not really political but I am paying more attention to issues in the world, because as a black man, I feel like I have no choice, you know? I have no choice but to find a way to dumb down the bullshit. So I'm trying to pay more attention to what's going on in the world; to try and inspire someone to get through, because these are tough times.
I've been given a gift... in church you learn at a very young age that it's not about the accolades or being seen, it's about being a spiritual vessel, to give back and to give praise to the most high.
I guess musically I'm really paying a lot of attention to the drum community and seeing how social media is having an affect on it. I saw the transition with my generation, so it's a little harder for me to go all in and just post things up all of the time. I don't want to over expose myself, but I also just want to be a positive example for someone and to inspire the next generation of younger players, to show them that it's possible. I'm also paying more attention to my health, because with the older I get and the more I'm touring, my health is key to staying strong.

You put out the Nyeusi record a little while ago. Are planning on doing anything more with that project?
I'm still trying to figure it out. I am starting to hear the music and I am starting to get the inspiration to do another album, but I'm not sure if I'm going to call it Nyeusi, because I'm in a different space. With where my life is moving, and all the things I draw inspiration from, there might be a different message.
I wanted Nyeusi to be a theme of who I am more than anything. Even though it's my music it's still not about me whatsoever, and I wanted room for all the other musicians to speak in that project. I mean, I might do a Nyeusi II, just because it was well received and people gravitated towards it, which gave me the push to keep going.
It took a lot of energy and a lot of time to put that album out, and once it was out I didn't really do much touring. There was another side that I had to learn about which was how to be an artist and to present the music. Now, I'm more in a head space of wanting to play and wanting to get the music out live and create more content. So it's very loose and in the air, but I will say that for 2020 I'll be doing more shows with Nyeusi and I'm going to have more live content out, so that's where I'm at with it.
Any European dates for 2020?
Yeah, in the fall, and maybe even later on, and then just doing some shows in New York and L.A..
If you could give three albums to a drummer, which would you choose and why?
This is really difficult. Man.
Ok, I would say:
James Brown – Funky Drummer, or The Payback. Why James Brown? Because that's where hip-hop is coming out of, with backbeats and breakbeats. So it can provide a good foundation for someone wanting to become a hip-hop drummer and to have an understanding of the language. Not just James Brown but soul and funk music.
Miles Davis – Kind of Blue. Just because that's a quintessential record for jazz. You can hear where it's coming from and where it's going.
Stevie Wonder – Songs in the Key of Life. He's an amazing songwriter and he plays every instrument. Being a drummer, you can get so caught up in the drums that you lose sight of what the message is, and Stevie Wonder is a beautiful storyteller. The music is killing but there's also a message which makes you want to investigate the lyrics. You get a sense of purpose and what music is actually meant for; what your role is as a drummer, too.
What are some of the things that are currently challenging you, either as a musician or just on a human level?
On a human level, learning to love and respect everyone for who they are and what they do. To never knock another person's path. To always be encouraging and spread love, if you will.
As a player, and this is going to sound crazy, but playing louder and faster. (laughs)
I mean, that's a really hard thing for me so I'm really trying to develop and get my phrases and musical statements to be a lot stronger, so that it becomes a part of a language and not just a lick or a fill. So I really want to keep developing and getting better as a person.
Good answer. Thanks for taking the time to sit down and do this.
Man, no problem! Thanks for asking!

The McCartney Family Album
April 6, 2008 -- The Guardian
To mark the 10th anniversary of Linda McCartney's death, Paul and daughter Mary have selected the best of her photographs for a revealing exhibition. Here, Mary tells Sean O'Hagan why the pictures are so special to her.
When I ask Mary McCartney to describe her mother's photographic style, she thinks for a long moment and says: 'She approached photography the way she approached everything else - with quiet confidence.' You can see that in the photographs spread out before us on the table of the west London members' club where McCartney has met me to talk about a forthcoming exhibition of her mother's work. The show, which opens at the James Hyman Gallery on 25 April, is the first major retrospective of Linda McCartney's photography, and has been timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of her death from breast cancer. The photographs have been selected by Paul and Mary McCartney, with input from Hyman, from 4,000-odd contact sheets.
'It's an incredible archive,' says Mary, herself a respected fashion and portrait photographer. 'Mum never stopped taking photographs, though it may have seemed that way to the public. It's about 30 years' worth of work. The only gap is around the time when Stella and I were born when, as she said, she was up to her neck in nappies. Otherwise she always seemed to have a camera in her hand.'
To many people Linda McCartney was known, first and foremost, as the wife of a Beatle, and then as a vegetarian-cum-animal rights campaigner. Yet it is her career as a photographer, which waned as she embraced motherhood, music and activism, that is her lasting legacy.
'She was an instinctive photographer and always unobtrusive,' continues Mary. 'She wasn't that interested in straight portraiture or art photography - the images she caught were nearly always intimate, relaxed and oddly revealing.'
You can see that intimacy in her shot of John Lennon and Paul McCartney working on lyrics in the corner of a recording studio. Both are immersed in the task, but obviously having a good time. McCartney, his biro poised over a sheet of paper, may just have amended the lyrics. Lennon obviously approves. They seem almost conspiratorial and to have the intimacy of a long-term couple. Which, in a way, they were.
With the Beatles, Linda's access was assured. Before she met Paul, though, she had worked with many of the icons of the Sixties pop scene, including Jimi Hendrix, whom she famously captured mid-yawn. He didn't seem to mind.
'It was a different time,' says Mary, 'before PRs and image makers took over. Back then, she told me, the manager would often be a friend of the band. If you were cool and they liked you, you could friend hang out.'
Mary's younger sister Stella, now a celebrated fashion designer, is in one of the most intriguing family snapshots. It was taken at Paul McCartney's cottage in Scotland, near the Mull of Kintyre, which he famously hymned on one of Wings's more mawkish songs. Paul balances on a fence in dressing gown and slippers. He is watching with some concern his young son James, who has just leapt off the bonnet of the family Land Rover. Immune to the drama, Stella is kneeling on the grass in the foreground, immersed in some private reverie.
'That's Poppy, our family dog,' says Mary, pointing at a pooch in the background. There is also a sack of logs, or maybe potatoes, in the foreground near Stella. It is a detailed photograph but intricately composed: the dark, looming cottage on the right of the image, the fence that arcs away to the horizon, the tall figure of Paul echoed by what appears to be a ring of standing stones in the background on the left.
It is also a perfectly rendered moment, a deceptively casual portrait of a family caught up in one of the small dramas of the everyday. The age is given added resonance by the fact that it is a glimpse into the private life of the McCartney family at a time in the early Seventies when Paul had fled the media-fuelled madness that attended the Beatles, and by the fact that Linda is the invisible, guiding presence.
'I love that photograph,' says Mary. 'It's so weird - the dog, my brother jumping into the air, and Stella in a world of her own. I could look at it for ages. It's not set up at all; it's all about watching and timing. I bet she didn't even change the lens to take it, just used the same old 50mm lens she always did. That's what I mean about instinctive. There's a faith that it will be alright and it is. She just gets it.'
She stares at it some more, and the photographer in her gives way to the loving daughter. 'We used to walk that fence all the time to see how far we could go before we fell off. So it has all those memories, too. Our lives are mapped out in our mum's photographs. I found out her and Dad's story just by looking through the contact sheets: her rock'n'roll stuff, then her photographs of the Beatles, then her meeting Dad. It's like her diary, really, a record of her life.'
Linda Louise Eastman began her career as a photographer almost by accident. While working as a receptionist for Town & Country magazine in Manhattan in the mid-Sixties, she picked up an invite for a press party on a boat on the Hudson. It was for the Rolling Stones, newly arrived in America. She charmed the bad boys of rock as she later charmed Hendrix and Jim Morrison.
Soon afterwards, she forsook the genteel concerns of Town & Country for the more earthy delights of the Fillmore East, a celebrated but grungy New York rock venue, where she became the house photographer, capturing live images of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, the Doors and the Who. Before Annie Leibovitz became Rolling Stone magazine's favourite snapper, Linda was the first woman photographer to have her work on the cover - a portrait of Eric Clapton.
'Mum liked doing music work when it was all free and easy,' Mary says, 'but when the lawyers and the accountants took over, she lost interest. She was independent always. She did it on her own terms or not at all. Plus, she had children. Children take over your life.'
Contrary to received wisdom, Linda Eastman was not an heir to the Eastman Kodak empire, but she did come from wealthy American stock. Her father Lee was a music-business attorney, while her mother, Louise Sara Lindner, inherited the Lindner department-store fortune. She died in an aeroplane crash in 1962, when Linda was just 20, precipitating in her daughter a lifelong aversion to flying.
'I think Mum and Dad were close because they both lost their mothers when they were young,' says Mary. 'It was one of the things that bonded them. You could glimpse it when certain songs came on the radio, and they'd both be suddenly sad at the same time. I also think it's what made them so family-oriented.'
Family life, one suspects, is also what grounded Paul McCartney after the craziness of the Beatles years - though blissful domesticity also seemed to soften his musical brain. For a long time Linda stopped being a professional photographer to become a musician of sorts with Wings, and had to contend with the wrath of Beatles fans who blamed her and Yoko Ono - but mostly Yoko - for the fall in quality in both Paul and John's solo work. She later admitted that she sometimes sang out of tune on early Wings songs.
Paul met Linda in the famed Bag O'Nails club in London in May 1967, where the new rock aristocracy hung out, and where she was taking shots of Georgie Fame for a feature on Swinging London. That same week, they met again when the Beatles unveiled their Sergeant Pepper album at a party in their manager Brian Epstein's Belgravia pad. In September 1968 Paul asked Linda to fly to London for a date. They married six months later. Mary was born in August 1969. On the back of her father's first solo album, McCartney, she is the curious infant peeking out of her father's jacket straight at her mother's lens.
'It's a beautiful moment, isn't it?' Mary says. Does she remember much about her childhood in Scotland? 'Oh God, yeah! I remember we'd go off exploring a lot, Stella and me, and we didn't have to be watched all the time.' It's a revealing memory, a reminder that they were still the children of one of the most famous pop stars in the world and had to be protected accordingly.
How big an influence is her mother on her own photographic style? 'I'm not sure. It was more her attitude I admired. She was feisty in her own way, but not in a big, in-your-face way. I suppose she was quietly persuasive. It took me a long time to even get to that point. I used to be so green when I started, almost apologetic. I'm more like her in the way I approach my personal projects: just me and the camera and a few rolls of film. She gave me loads of advice all the time and I really miss that, chatting and arguing over the contact sheets. I remember when I used to moan about missing a great moment, a great photograph, she'd say: "Oh, don't worry, it's in your soul camera." I think she really believed that.'
Was it hard to be the child not just of famous parents, but parents who were seen as alternative types - hippies, vegetarians, animal rights activists? 'Well, my friend Josie used to call us hippy convoy kids,' she laughs. 'We were tomboys, that was down to Mum. She was a bit anti-authority, a bit rebellious. At the local comprehensive in Rye I tried to blend in but Mum and Dad would turn up in the Land Rover with the rainbow-stripe fabric on the seats. The rock hippy parents! I did the whole thing of being embarrassed as a teenager. I'd look at her odd stripy socks and go: "You're not going out dressed like that, Mum!" Now I think it's beautiful. Like the way she cut her own hair. It's quite cool, really.'
There is a powerful self-portrait of Linda towards the end of her life in Francis Bacon's studio. I ask Mary if this was the last image taken of her mother before she died. 'No,' she says haltingly. 'I think I took the last photographs of her. I was working on the press pictures for her cookbook. I think the very last one was a close-up where she is looking deep into the lens. Really intimate and poignant. The thing is,' she says, tears welling up, 'I don't think she ever saw it.'
As she composes herself, she sorts through the images. 'That's the thing about photographs,' she says. 'They are wonderful reminders of things, but they also carry memories, sadness.'
It must have been an emotional experience to sort through her mother's archive for the show. 'In one way it was, but in another it was satisfying. Me and Dad have a proper grown-up relationship now. I feel I was a kid for so long, but now we have both been through a lot. We're both divorcés, for a start,' she says, laughing mischievously.
Though I had been warned that the words Heather Mills were not to be even mentioned, it seemed an opportune moment to utter them. Did you, I ask, gritting my teeth, ever do a portrait of her? 'No,' she says, looking perplexed at the very thought. 'No. Not really. I didn't.' Funny that, I say, but she does not respond. The silence, though, says enough. In more ways than one, she is her mother's daughter.
Linda McCartney's photographs will be at the James Hyman Gallery, 5 Savile Row, London W1 (020 7494 3857) from 25 April to 19 July

An amazing review of 1992′s Johnny Stecchino
>Roberto Benigni, the writer-director-star of "Johnny Stecchino," (at the Goldwyn Pavilion, Beverly Center Cineplex) shares one major quality with the great silent movie comics, the Chaplins and Keatons. Somehow, he seems not quite of this Earth.
With his elfin, pointy face and tiny, agile frame, he's a moon child, a glorious freak. When Benigni begins his specialty--a rapid, almost brain-dizzying patter, where his maniacal discourse and flailing arms shred all logic to tatters--his voice and persona take on weird, musical tones, like Gabrieli's trumpet with a frog in the bell.
"Johnny Stecchino," a showcase for Benigni, was the biggest box-office hit in the history of the Italian movie industry, bigger than "La Dolce Vita" or "Cinema Paradiso." But it's unlikely to strike that universal a chord here. It's a classic star vehicle: a simple romantic crime comedy about accident-prone bus driver, Dante, who unknowingly assumes the role of his look-alike Sicilian gangster, Johnny. It exists mainly to show Benigni off, let him daffily race through his repertoire.
But, if you don't recognize Benigni--and, though he's a first-magnitude Italian star, most American audiences know him only from his Jim Jarmusch films--if, in a way, you aren't rooting for him, it's not quite as funny.
The movie is a sendup of machismo and the Mafia. In it, Johnny's wife Maria (Nicoletta Braschi, Signora Benigni) and his coke-addled lawyer (Paolo Bonacelli) engineer the switch to provide the gangster's many enemies with a plausible corpse, so the real Johnny, hidden in his villa basement, can flee Palermo for Argentina. But there's another symbolic layer to this story: "Stecchino" means "toothpick" in Italian, and the "Johnny Toothpick" character is, in some sense, the evil fantasy-come-true of hapless Dante.
Like most "double" movies, from "Prince and the Pauper" to "The Prisoner of Zenda," it's a secret wish-fulfillment tale. Dante, a bumbling but benevolent little bus driver, goes woozy whenever he sees a beautiful woman. Johnny is a gravelly voiced lady-killer brute, who kills without qualm and slaps gorgeous Maria if she kisses him during sex.
And though kind little Dante, who serenades his busful of beaming, learning-impaired passengers with a jolly zoo song, shows no apparent desire to be a brutal gangster, it's down there underneath. He'd like the power, the freedom, certainly the sex.
The movie strips his id, lets him play at being bad Al Pacino. But it's a crucial plot twist that Dante never knows he's been substituted for a notorious criminal. Instead, he accepts all the crazy lies and misconceptions Maria and Johnny's shyster attorney keep feeding him: that the gourmet meals sent down to Johnny are being fed to a ravenous pet dog; that the lawyer's cocaine is diabetes medicine, snorted through a lira bill; that, when the town erupts in gunfire or half a Palermo opera audience screams for the impostor's head, it's because he's stolen a banana.
That's how Dante keeps his innocence. His naivete is immense. But no more so, really, than killer Johnny, who falls into a trance whenever he hears the word mother, and keeps complaining that the "wimp" Dante doesn't look anything like him. They're alter egos, like swinger Buddy Love and schlemiel Julius Kelp in Jerry Lewis' "The Nutty Professor," and they even have complementary personal phallic symbols: Dante's bananas and Johnny's toothpicks. When they meet, appropriately, it's in another reprise of the legendary two men and a mirror gag from Max Lindner and the Marx Brothers.
As an actor, Benigni is unique. Like Chaplin, Laurel or Hardy, he's a human mixed metaphor: a devilish cherub, a seraphic imp. (In "Il Piccolo Diavolo," he played a brash little demon who fell in love with the priest who exorcised him.) As a director, his style is big, clean, lucid. All the characters are snazzily exaggerated, and cinematographer Giuseppe Lanci's shots of Palermo have sumptuous size and spaciousness.
As a writer, like many comics, he tends to string together set pieces, sometimes illogically. Dante is boob or would-be sharpster, Maria shifts too swiftly from murderess to heroine. And it's hard to figure why everyone in town mistakes Dante for Johnny, except the police colonel to whom he confesses his "banana robbery."
What buoys "Johnny Stecchino" (MPAA-rated R for language and drug-related humor) is its impudence, its tender-hearted wackiness, its revelry in all the squirrelly quirks of Benigni's beguilingly screw-loose persona. The movie is a nose-tweak of the Mafia, government and organized religion, but there's a wide-eyed style that softens its roughest gags. That tone is wonderful, childlike, unmalicious. If not quite benign, at least it's Benigni.

*’Need to get bodies. (so der erneute Inhalt einer erneuten Zeile sogar eines engl. Popsongs). *aus: ‘Get gone’
*’Die Bi Gays’ u.a. ‘Massachuetts’, die Big(g) Brothers, G-i-b-b, während zwei gut davon aussahen, sang der eine immer sehr hoch, selber sah er weniger gut aus.
“Got to be you” Got Bi- to you! (so ein noch weiterer Pop-titel)

(▶︎ DUO | Claudia Acuñaから)
DUO by Claudia Acuña
Reflection and re-dedication are steady themes in the life and work of Claudia Acuña. Following her dynamic debut on the NY scene in the 1990’s she recorded five albums as a leader, and then stepped away for a decade to raise her son and restore her power. Returning refreshed and reborn in 2019, Acuna delivered the Latin Grammy nominated album Turning Pages, representing reclamation, recovery, and documenting a major creative leap. As 2020 rocked the world we all experienced our own version of such a journey, asking ourselves important questions of intent and purpose. Claudia returned to a long time desire - to record a duets album of songs from her homeland, Chile. As the world slowed to a crawl, Acuna took this time to remember the past, to find the core of her dedication and the power of music. The result is DUO, 9 songs recorded with some of the finest musicians in the world. Entering the studio with the likes of Fred Hersch, Christian McBride, and Kenny Barron for an intimate recording put her in a vulnerable spot, but the ease and comfort of the experience set the tone. The simplicity of just two, feeling the music and letting it flow through them, brought her to a new place as a singer. Seven of the songs on DUO come from composers hailing from Chile, Cuba, Argentina, and Mexico, and one from the great Chick Corea. The final track is Acuña’s sole original composition, and speaks of her relationship with Mother Earth. ‘…at the end of the day we all walk alone, and we can discover our beauty when we see Earth and us as one’ Born July 3, 1971 in Santiago and raised in Concepcion, Acuña established herself on the Chilean jazz scene in her early 20s. When she arrived in New York City in 1995, Acuña quickly gained recognition as a leading voice on a scene rapidly being transformed by a wave of brilliant Latin American musicians. Part of the roiling scene centered on Small’s, she plunged into collaborations with masters such as Jason Lindner, Harry Whitaker, Arturo O'Farrill, Guillermo Klein, Avishai Cohen, Branford Marsalis, George Benson, Louie Vega, Danilo Perez, and Tom Harrill. Her five albums as a leader established Acuña as a creative force, from 2002’s Rhythm of Life (Verve) and 2004’s Luna (MaxJazz) though 2008’s In These Shoes (Zoho Music) and 2009’s strikingly beautiful En Este Momento (Marsalis Music). Whether putting her stamp on popular Latin American ballads, reimagining jazz standards from a South American perspective, or bringing infusing Afro-Caribbean material with a wide rhythmic sensibility, Acuña stands out as a passionate and emotionally incisive singer with a gleaming, burnished bronze tone. For much of the past decade she’s put her recording career on the back-burner to focus on raising her son. Instead of touring, she’s stayed closer to home, where her keen intelligence and intrepid spirit has made her the vocalist of choice for many of jazz’s most creative figures. クレジット2022年9月23日リリース 1. “Around 10-12 years ago (when he was still a spry youngster in his nineties), my dad suggested to my brother’s family and mine, that we jot down a list of any of my parent’s household items we’d like to have once both he and my mother had passed on. That way, there will be no question about who gets the hutch, or the couch, or whatevs. Ever the pragmatist, my dad. So that’s what we did.
“I myself have little interest in the monetary value of their trappings, as much as I do the potentially historical value. So I jotted down that I’d like to have his old slide rule. He saw that on my list and asked; ‘Why the hell would you want that piece of crap?’ I told him because of its role in the Manhattan Project, it has historical value. Isn’t that the same one you used at Hanford, Los Alamos and Oak Ridge? He confirmed. Then he asked; ‘Do you want the abacus too?’ 😦
“You used an abacus on the Manhattan Project? Seriously?
“Sure. How do you think we tracked complex calculations before computers came along?
“I never really thought about it. Sure. Put me down for the abacus too. 🤔
“He told me to go ahead and take them then and there. No one else was interested, so have at them. So I did.
“The history of this slide rule is itself kind of interesting. He bought it second hand in 1939 from someone in Chicago for $3.00, because he couldn’t afford a brand new one, which sold for $11.75. I’ve researched this particular model. It was patented in 1908, manufactured in 1932 by an outfit called Keuffel & Esser in New York. The model number is 4092-3. It is a ‘log log duplex’ type slide rule (whatever the hell that means). He even kept the original leather case, which its previous owner scrawled weird shapes into. My dad covered them over with a stylized M L, his initials.
“Keuffel & Esser remained in business for decades. But then in 1975, the market for slide rules skidded into the porcelain fixture when, not coincidentally, the pocket calculator came along. They were ultimately swallowed up by AZON Corporation in 1987.
