randy looked away from the fountain, heart seized by guilt and the knowledge that everything had come crumbling down in less than a minute.

there was yelling, somebody was grabbing his arm and pulling him away but he couldn’t leave him. not like this. not dead, bleeding out on the dirty gravel.

that was the death of somebody else. not bob, not bob.

he’d finally turned in his project, was planning a date with cherry for some point this week. his dad was gonna take him camping and his mom was going to cook meals for them to take and eat infront of the fire-

please, please not bob. he begged, whispering under his breath.

anyone but bob.

both greasers laid on the floor, one more still than the other. one shaking, blood coating him from switchblade to chest, the other passed out with water dripping from his skin.

as he’s thrown into the backseat of a car, an arm wrapped around his shoulders, he breathes.

peering out of the back windshield, he watched the body fade into the distance.

and, randy cried.

he sobbed for bob, for bob’s parents and his grandma who was supposed to come this weekend. he sobbed for cherry and for ponyboy, for the greaser with the ugly scar to match his black eyes.

something had changed that night.

bob was dead, his brother.

maybe randy had died a little bit too.
