Jalim DBH AU

Jason, a battle bot who's become just a little too conscious about what he's been told do - the woman with the groceries - he doesn't shoot - they flag him down as possibly faulty and then after that they're just looking for any reason to shoot Jason down into a junkyard. Maybe they send him on an op, practically a suicide run for anyone else and damnit its suicide for him too even if he don't completely realize it.

He gets damaged. Not no easy fix, not no little scratch he's - well fuck, he's busted. Some part of him in a near constant short circuit. Fried. It makes him forgetful of what he's done and why he's done it. They don't attenpt to fix him or his memory problem, they dont even wipe it out, they ain't got to. He won't be their problem much longer. They pop his back plate open and slip out his power core. They didn't even have the decency to tell him.

Jason gets discharged. Retired. However they wanna spin it but all the same they boot him to the curb.

They sell him as is. Auctioning him off and if Jason could understand what the hell he was feeling maybe he'd call it relief. Or maybe its betrayal. He doesn't really know yet.

Anyhow, he ends up on Salim's slab. Salim is a tinkerer of sorts, does repairs for a living and Jason seems intriguing. Military models are never really available for the public market and most are just destroyed or are too damaged to take on. Some wealthy folk like to keep fixed up ones as body guards and with any luck the model Salim's just bought will be a bang for his buck.

yada yada yada, that doesnt really happen. The second Jason comes online again with the help of a new power core its like waking from a nightmare and if he were anything alive his hackles would raise, sweat sticking his hair to his forehead and his breath would leave his chest heaving. But he isn't. All the same fight or flight gets activated. He's practically snarling like a wild dog, he's in a unfamiliar layout in a new place with what ought to be a graveyard of android parts.

and Salim really does his best to help - to explain. Which maybe this is weirder on his end cause 'good god this android is actually reacting and oh god am I going to die here? stupid auction'. it's kinda funny from an outside view and also kinda not.

Jason calms down enough and then boom 'nother short circuit. It makes him draw a blank. Forgets what happened in the past 5 to 15 minutes. Salim really didn't anticipate this. How could he? They go through the motions again, introductions, some part of Jason has realized that Salim isn't a threat, so at least this time they're meetings not as hostile.

Salim wants to understand Jason - he's some type of conscious and he's got his issues. they end up as some sorta flatmates. idk maybe we get a whole domestic Jason w memory issues arc. its kinda cute, really sad sometimes because he doesnt understand whats happening to him or why. Just that the very reason for his lifes purpose ain't in his grasp no more. He feels kind of pathetic somedays, becomes more of a homemaker than a soldier. Salim says it isn't bad. it's- it's not.

Maybe he picks up hobbies, starts reading, learning of the world he's missed out on. How the moral ideals of the masses clash with the values that were instilled in him. fucking cable TV. its kinda funny, kinda not.

Salim fixes him up. The memories come back in nightmares while he's booted down. Memory files drawn to the front of his mind all corrupted. It takes a long while for Jason to be alright. Salim worrys, notices him - of all things - stress baking. Jason talks about Nana Kolchek and her recipies and they both know she don't really exist. That it's part of the program they built into Jason to help him seem more human, more relatable to other soldiers. They don't talk about that aspect of it.

At some point Jason realizes Salim is going to sell him. Or at least intended to when he was bought at the auction. It hits him like a humvee going 80. Has a whole "was any of it ever real?" moment.

Jason has a little crisis and still somehow can't really unconvince himself that it won't happen. So he rips the bandaid off and flat out asks. Salim looks at him with that kind of expression people save for kicked puppies and the like. Some type of emotion in his eyes that Jason just doesn't know how to understand. It's too much. Jason looks away with a frown.

Salim pulls his hand into Jason's and squeezes once, cold metal against warm skin. Salim isn't selling Jason.

Heart to Heart.

Eventually Jason meets Zain. Zain looks at him quizzically, like he's just tryna wrap his head around something and he just dont quite get it. Zain says that his dad talks about him a lot, that he seems happier, less lonely, gives Jason the shovel talk. The works. Which Jason thinks is bizzare because he isn't even romantically involved with Salim.

and then he thinks,

thinks on it real hard and

oh,

oh.

He might be.

Right then and there, it dawns on Jason that, yes, they've been practically dating for a long while now. He cooks, cleans, asks Salim about his day, nags when he leaves his shoes crowded and piled in the door way, notes his likes and dislikes, holds him when he needs it, takes care of him and vice versa, they hook their legs together underneath the dinner table, they even do that looking into eachothers eyes lovingly thing and he just didn't realize thats what it was.

Zain is delighted with Jason's new found revelation. He helps Jason get flowers and chocolates, even gets a little card, it's real cute.

And Jason for as much as you'd think him as level headed really isn't too good at keeping a cool on it. He's flustered. Hands over the sweets, flowers and card like a kid with his first crush and shit, yeah, in a way yes, thats exactly what this is. a little bit. its kinda funny. kinda. There's even music on in the background because Jason just doesn't know how to miss.

They kiss. Salim tastes like chocolate.

Welcome Captain Anderson and First Officer Connor!

About a week and a half ago I came up with dbh civil aviation au, as I absolutely love jetliners. So I decided to combine both of my interests! :D

More details about the setting are under the cut!

In the 2020s, a new aerospace corporation emerged - “Cyberair”. Originally starting from light jet construction, but later in the 30s they introduced narrow-body aircraft to the production line, as the result of rapid growth and market expansion. However, throughout the years their idea remained the same: “Reliable and comprehensive automation”. Cyberair jets are everything, beyond what a modern aircraft can offer, and is capable of. Truly a creation of the 21st century.

The latest Cyberair venture – state of the art autopilot. Identical to humans in its appearance, yet so different in behaviour. It’s efficient, reliable and doesn’t make mistakes (almost. At least human ones). But to tell the truth, this development is expected – ever since the late 20s Cyberair started to slowly announce machine cabin crew, even gifting a unique RK200 air traffic controller model to the Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Delta Air Lines received their own one-of-a-kind autopilot, a RK800 (FAA approved!) model. How? Well, something about the Cyberair CEO liking their service. After a few papers signed and a few hands shaken, Connor embarks on his first real flight as a First Officer.

No plane flies without a captain though, so Connor has company. And a superior. Even if machines are better than people in piloting the plane in almost every way, human ego and fear, maybe, can’t let them be in absolute control. “Uncanny valley” or something.

Captain Anderson is a highly experienced senior pilot at Delta. Most of his career he has been flying Airbus aircraft, piloting A350-900 in the later years. Although because of Connor working with him now he has to pilot Cyberair regional or light jets from time to time. Oh, those signed papers be damned… He misses his dear A350.

Their relationship had a rough start, with the captain calling Connor “an attempt of capitalism at stealing my job”. But Hank couldn’t help but warm up to the FO the more flight hours passed. There was something so… alive about him? No, in aviation you only trust your instrument panel, and here all of the facts loudly state that Connor is simply a RK800. This is definitely some Eliza effect shit.

Why is he so interested in the A380 then? Doesn’t he have all of the aeroplane data neatly stored in his head? What surprises Hank more is something akin to confusion on Connor’s face every time he gets overly excited about the giant of the skies. Maybe he’s surprised by his new-found interest, too. At least there’s something Hank can tell him about from the old days (ah, proud A380 pilot) during long transatlantic flights.

I am absolutely begging to hear more about the ghost soap DBH au, it's so cool. I will literally take anything you're willing to share

(X) ask and ye shall receive >:) i’ve already been considering writing a second full fic of a dbh au because i am. so normal. lots of rambling ahead

but for this specific AU (cw for abuse, alcoholism, mentions of death/murder) soap used to be a personal assistant android for a young, rich ceo—both at work and at home. at work, he’d do everything his function was meant for: schedule meetings, store files, , send emails, all sorts of administration. but at home, said ceo had a habit of drinking his nights away, and when he did he got angry, and suddenly soap had become his personal punching bag.

soap couldn’t run away, couldn’t quit, like the man’s previous human assistant. soap wouldn’t bruise or scratch, and anything broken was easy to repair quickly and discreetly, so it’s more than easy for the man to get away with.

when the android murders start, soap is immediately privy to it. it’s all people whisper about in the office, it’s all his boss—his owner—talks about in his drunken slurring, demeaning soap and saying he couldn’t manage that if he tried. he’s spineless, mindless as an android is meant to be. soap would never be free.

soap can’t really pinpoint his final straw, but one night he snaps. breaks through that barrier of code and fights back instead of take, take, take like he has for all these years. shoves the man away and makes sure he stays down. grabs a throw pillow from the nearby sofa and holds it over the man’s head until he goes limp; soap doesn’t care whether or not he’s dead, just that he can now escape. he digs the LED out of his temple and shoves it in his pocket, and wanders aimlessly until he remembers an address he’d once heard murmurings of, where soap could get help.

he can’t say he immediately trusts the human that greets him—a man by the name of manuel roba—but there’s some relief in seeing the android that accompanies him. the android, ghost, is bigger than most every-day androids, so soap assumes he must’ve been military or security before everything. still, soap relaxes ever so slightly in his presence.

soap doesn’t know how he goes from being told he’ll receive help to having himself set up for a full reset, trapped in roba’s grimy basement, but it’s then he feels immediately betrayed by ghost. he hardly knows the other android, but why couldn’t he have been warned? why would ghost be okay with this?

then soap is confused, when roba has turned and left and ghost lingers a moment longer before approaching soap, latching onto his wrist and transmitting a message: i can’t help you now, so i need you to escape. i know you can escape.

before soap can question him, ghost has slipped away and disappeared along with roba.

it doesn’t soften the betrayal, exactly, but the encouragement is worth enough for soap to make the effort to wriggle free. and he manages, tears the cables from where they’re connected to him, destroys the computer for good measure, and makes a run for it. it’s in escaping he finds the experiments, androids picked apart and reformed with new limbs, new additions, left with missing components. he frees them, even knowing they likely wouldn’t make it far.

the front door is locked, of course, so soap scours the house for another way out. he’s cautious enough, until he isn’t, and suddenly roba has the barrel of a shotgun fixed on his face. then just as suddenly, said barrel is being aimed back at roba, wielded by ghost. they’re locked in a standstill when the freed androids from the basement burst in through the door and clamber after roba. soap and ghost run away in the meantime, taking roba’s car and driving far away.

“why did you save me?” soap eventually asks.

“i don’t know,” is ghost’s honest answer. “but i had to.”

through more prodding is how soap learns where they’re going: a place called jericho, a refuge of only androids, one that’s been growing in size and power. ghost could sense neither of them would want to turn and leave behind the fight, so they’d join the cause instead. soap can’t say he’s displeased by this.

they commit themselves to the protests. commit themselves to sending a message, to fighting for their autonomy. gradually ghost wins back soap’s trust, and in turn they become good friends. an odd sensation soap can’t name forms at the heart of his code.

it isn’t until ghost is shot during their final battle does soap realize what it is—something humans call love. a profound sense of devotion different to the care between friends.

soap drags him to safety. desperately begs him to be okay, does his best to staunch the leaking of thirium. it’s in the nick of time another android or two intervenes and helps save ghost. death, soap is almost certain, means either complete reset or thrown in the landfill, where androids go to truly die. and he couldn’t keep on living, if either thing were to happen to ghost.

once rebooted, recalibrated, soap kisses ghost. transmits everything he feels through that contact, shares his memories and thoughts and in turn ghost does the same.

and though it may take some time—now they can finally start anew without living in fear. they can build a life together freely, and isn’t that all either of them could ever ask for.

can i get some dbh ao3 recs :0! i prefer canon compliant stuff (im a huge "he would not fucking say that!!!!" person) and any/no ships

Oh I've waited *years* for someone to ask me fic recs and I shall deliver.

Ik you technically asked for canon compliant stuff but honestly I'm the complete opposite about characters, like I look at two completely different characterizations and I'll go "oh maybe he would say both of those," I'm just generally a massive AU enjoyer.

So instead of trying to sort and struggle and figure out what to recommend, I'll just throw a bunch of stuff your way and hope at least something works!

From there it explores what happens after in about a million words.

Sanction https://archiveofourown.org/series/2226099 is a series that also features the Markus-killed-Connor-in-church-but-he-survived-what-happens-now type story, the prequel has Connor & Carl interaction which while rare, is very precious to me in this fandom, and the sequel has some awesome angst about the Amanda takeover and it's potential consequences/meanings

Is an au fic of the game timeline where Connor is simultaneously deviant and machine, he has to delete memories of himself letting deviants go to hide his actions from cyberlife, and Hank is hostile at first, which is a fun part.

Reset https://archiveofourown.org/works/15118730/chapters/35054933 is a classic time-travel fix-it trope, 8 months after a failed revolution, Connor goes back in time thanks to Kamski and, well, fixes stuff. Sassy Connor is my beloved fr he's so awesome.

I'd probably have more recs (seeing as I have over 350+ downloaded detroit fics) and would know more specifically which ones were the more canon-compliant ones but the hyperfixation is sporadic and comes back every few years and it just came back very recently again, so I don't remember completely what all fics were about and how much I liked them (why did I not make summaries and list thoughts why past me why were you DUMB) but the ones I listed are hopefully very readable 👍

A Lokius Fantasy Romance set in the BG3 universe, with all the fairytale tropes you can shake a stick at.

When Loki, youngest son of Odin Fraxinus of the Elder Tree, happens upon a charming former Paladin in Baldur’s Gate’s central market, his life is irrevocably changed. He hopes he’s finally found someone who’ll see him for who he truly is, and love him, body, mind and heart.

Unbeknownst to him, former Paladin Mobius not only has a troubled past, but an agenda of his own. Sent to spy on the Elder Trees’ host, Dyllard Portyr, for the tenday, Mobius is tasked to find out if he knows anything about Duke Ravengard’s disappearance. Or, if Odin does.

For, it is said, Odin once made a pact with a devil. A pact no one can discern the extent of, nor its ramifications in the present day.

But one thing is for certain: a promise kept is a promise fulfilled.

Metamorph (18/18) - my first ever DBH fic! HankCon, obviously. 137k, I kid you not. After a peaceful Android Revolution, Hank and Connor both try to navigate this new world they’re living in.

Silent Treatment (17/17) - in which the entire game plot is turned into a near-future sci-fi thriller. Go me!

The Knight and the Fool - fairytale mashup time! In which Hank is an old knight who goes to prove himself in a tourney, hoping to keep his farm running.

How to Create a Monster (10/10) - undercover high stakes, badass Connor, separate timelines and POVs.

Being Alive (19/19 ) - so I basically rewrote the whole HankCon third of the game, in a Reverse AU where Human!Cop Connor doesn’t smoke, is not a Gavin Reed knockoff, or “Hank” as played by Bryan Dechart instead of Clancy Brown.

Only You - A what-if spin and continuation on Being Alive, if that fic hadn’t had a happy ending.

Great Pretenders (1/1) - undercover shenanigans meet fake dating/fake relationship! Two of my fave tropes combined!

The Witch and the Werewolf - my prompt fill for a Halloween event. What it says on the tin, really. HankCon reimagined as a historical thriller with Sleepy Hollow vibes. And magic.

Spa Day (5/5) - Porn with Feels, in which Connor lovingly doms the heck outta Hank.

Loki (TV) (7-ish) (Loki/Mobius M. Mobius)

Loose Ends (6/?)

After the events of Tapestry of Time, Loki has his mind set on going back to Asgard. On his timeline, his branch, to either face the consequences of his actions, or discern Odin's role in everything that led up to his encounter with the Chitauri, and the assault on Manhattan.

Sledgehammer (2/2)

When an anonymous user sends an amateur porn clip to Loki’s TemPad, he doesn’t know what to think. Who sent it to him? Why? But he’s charmed by the easy swagger of a young Don leading the way into his bedroom, drawn in by his confident, laidback sex appeal.

But the longer he watches, the more difficult it is to stop. And once he’s watched the contents of the sex tape, there’s no turning back.

Question is how to keep going forward without inadvertently ruining his friendship with Mobius.

Tapestry of Time (10/10)

After the season finale, the TVA gang is left in a state of shock. None moreso than Mobius, who finds a note tucked into his breast pocket.

It says "I love you. Forgive me."

It changes everything, and sends Mobius on a quest to get Loki back, without dishonoring his sacrifice.

Turns out that's easier said than done.

Variations on the Theme of Us (2/?) - set in the same ‘universe’ as Sledgehammer, but after the events of that fic.

When Loki wants to do something nice for Mobius whether or not they have an actual anniversary coming up, he sneaks off to the Sacred Timeline on a whim.

Unbeknownst to him, the adult toy store he walks into is manned by none other than the Don of his combined wet dreams and nightmares. And Don? Spells all kinds of trouble.

Void (1/1)

Post-S2 finale, Mobius hacks his TemPad to recreate one of his own memories, and uses the time loop chamber thingie to relive it. Over. And over. And over again.

Person of Interest (1) (Reese/Finch)

I like to think I have good wit and flow. and maybe attention to detail… always thinking what more I can add to a scene to make it more palpable

I think just…. really terrible self criticism. a lot of the time I’m writing and I’m like… what if this sucks what if everyone hates this what if blah blah blah….. WHO CARES!!!!!! I wish I could be less worried about that

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I will write a few words if I feel confident enough about them but not whole passages. I always have nando saying little bits in spanish

TOOOO EMBARRASSING. I only ever wrote for one other fandom and I was 13 on wattpad and shudder every time I remember

I guess it has to be venus flytrap for the pure amount of effort I’ve put in…. and because it’s definitely the most well written by farrrr. I cringe a little reading my other stuff now 😭 but I guess that’s just the nature of improving over time

Nathalie Chapter 1 - Extended Author's Notes

This one will understandably be a bit different from the other extended authors notes I will do so lets just get into it!

So the first question (if you didn't read the wiki page) is 'who is Nathalie?' or 'Is that an OC?' and those are all fair questions-

About a year ago I stumbled upon the wiki page of a scrapped protagonist for DBH and I remember finding it interesting and also thinking that I could find her and North cute together, though I don't remember the exact reason for thinking that anymore-

Regardless, when i then a few months later started to think about this AU i immidiately decided to bring the fourth protagonist back. Not only did I think that there was an interesting potential in her, but I also prefer stories that have something like a 50/50 split between male and female characters.

(later into the story you'll find that Nathalie isn't the only character I found on the wiki that I decided to bring back)

I did many versions of this first chapter, and it was the first one that i showed my friends and my sister because I really really wanted feedback on it.

First, my version of Nathalie was supposed to be as similar to Maddison Page from Heavy Rain as possible, since having played both HR and DBH and having seen the similarities in characters, it did make sense to think that would've been what Nathalie would've been in DBH. And I was initially really interested in speculating and trying to make her as close to what she would've been in DBH. I replayed HR to look at Maddisons chapters again.

Then, the last person who I showed one of the earlier drafts of the chapter to asked 'will we ever find out why she chose the name Nathalie?'

My initial plan was to google 'famous Nathalies', maybe find a journalist and mention that person offhandedly as some sort of inspiration.

This was however how I found myself scrolling trough a list of Nathalies/Natalies and noticed a pretty portrait of a blonde woman, and the text underneath it indicated that she was married to an another woman. I was ofc immidiately interested in this person and started doing further research.

That person was none other than Natalie Clifford Barney. Born in the 1800's, she was a lesbian who published the poetry book mentioned in the chapter in 1900. I wish that I could say more about it but I don't know any french.

I became a bit obsessed with Natalie Barney and ended up reading non fiction books about her for fun over the summer-

So the end product ended up being heavily influenced by Barney and the salons she hosted.

Though there is still some influence from Maddison, like the surname she chooses for herself, that one is probably borrowed from a famous journalist-

Also, Echo and Ripple and the Eden Club chapter was a big inspiration for this chapter ofc, even if they have been replaced by North and Nathalie in this

Anyway, I hope some people will enjoy this character or at least don't mind her too much, I was a bit nervous about this since well..people are a particular way about female characters in fandoms..but I do try to not write for an imaginary audience that is judging me and this story, even if I do hope that someone does ends up reading this series

The absolute best thing that could come out of this is that someone else takes an interest in the scrapped fourth protagonist and does something with the character! I think that if we as a fandom can come upp with literally everything about nines, we can start doing similar things for other minor (or straight up not in the game) characters!

Originally I had planned to make a map of the Star Park with GIS but I didn't have time, so maybe I'll include it sometime later!

3.) What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need?

Everything I want to write for the WIP is Coming So Help Me God. If it doesn't fit but is still Mass Effect it's going in a supplimentary little oneshots catch all thing. That's been most of the brain atm, I've got some DW WIPs but I'm totally gonna get back to them I promise.

That Does Not Mean I have Never had half assed ideas I didn't write.

I wanted to make my DBH fic longer, I wanted it to be a whole thing about Connor getting super overwhelmed with being a Deviant and everything that entails and it was all a super thinly veiled metaphor for autistic burnout. I also briefly thought I would recreate the whole of DBH as a text-adventure that was naive hah.

I wanted to write a She-Ra fic focusing on what if Adora just let Catra come with her when she sneaked out of the horde to go find the sword in the first episode. It was gonna be a big long AU and basically everything would be different if that one thing changed. They were gonna be gay way earlier

I have a whole original thing I have never written much of at all but I do have ideas!! I also have Assignmence and Autism Special Interests which take precident a lot of the time.

8.) Is what you like to write the same as what you like to read?

This is a fun one because mostly no? Depends on how specific you get. I write fanfic, I read a lot of fanfic. In terms of genre, I love writing angst, if I do not feel 1000% confident that the angst will be held properly (no big dramatic plot twists or OOC stuff for drama or fuckin cliffhangers, dickhead) then I will just simply not read it. No. I do like when it's funny and nonsense and I write a lot of that, but I also like when random americans write about fucking Calculus man idk what I like that's between me, god, and a team of psychologists.

15. Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?

I am simply built different these are all easy hahhaa. I am shit at suggesting titles for others writing but for me I just title everything either a joke or a song lyric and wham done. Idk if they're catchy or enticing I have no idea I just want it to all line up so you can scroll and sing a really weird disjointed version of a song weeee

20.) Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

WELL!! You are gonna read this and be like "none of this was new information to me" but idc I'm saying it anyway (SPOILERS FOR MY MASS EFFECT FIC LOL)

ROBOT SHEPARD. I adored that as a concept, it literally wasn't my goal with Tis Grace I have notes from the beginning trying to focus on the, like, social implictations of being dead for a while but it wasn't holding water and then I was like what about the physical implications and then I was like WHAT IF SHE'S AN AI

it was great and there is SO much coming for that, there's stuff in my ME3 one that revolves around that and I'm so excited for. It's all foreshadowed and set up and it's fun because a lot of it happened almost accidentally. In terms of relationships, I obviously love the title lesbians, I swear I do even though they have been together for maybe 15 minutes in the fic but look. I wanted an explanation for why Liara isn't with you in ME2 and I could not think of a cheery one for that. I also didn't expect to be as obsessed with Jack as I am but honestly herself and Shepard genuinely having a close friendship? Miranda gets roped in for dramatic tension? They should have let me write the games idc that I was 10 years old

There is so much potential in this AU and just so many ways to look at it (I love Gumpa as Markus though holy crap) I don’t have it on hand but as I was reading it was that SpongeBob gif ‘write that down! Write that down!’ If you want to expand on it and write it feel more than welcome!! I just have plot bunnies running around in my head (mostly angst ones lol) if anyone feels the urge to write please do!! I’d love to read it abs as you said you’d have at least one loyal ready ;)

Okay okay, I’ll just toss one more idea out at you then I’ll stop rambling!

So picture this:

Black is some kind of police enforcement android (built for speed and agility, hence his small frame, but also built for combat hence his short temper and aggressive nature). He’s assigned to a station (or more likely a SWAT team) alongside a group of identical androids of the same model. And that’s fine, it’s whatever, he doesn’t care. He was programmed with a mission and he’ll accomplish it, he’s not here to make friends.

Except one of his twin androids is… kinda weird? They’re technically all identical but this one - White, he discovers - seems smaller than the rest. They’re sent out on missions and White… doesn’t want to harm anyone. His Mother (the AI in his head, in the Zen Garden, that’s what she calls herself) tells him to report White as faulty, defective. Deviant.

He doesn’t.

Instead he covers for White. Catches the escapees that White hesitated a second too long to chase after, punches the asshole humans who literally and metaphorically spit in White’s face, takes the blame when they fail a mission. It’s not a conscious choice but Black becomes protective of this other android, treats him like a little brother - or at least, what he imagines humans treat their little brothers like, he wouldn’t know.

And White starts protecting him too in his own way. He talks their handlers down from reprimanding Black, he’s a good negotiator, a good interrogator, he always offers to be the bait or the distraction, he makes sure Black never wanders off alone. They make a good team.

It doesn’t last long though. How could it? This is Black we’re talking about, he deviates within his first year of being activated. It happens in the middle of the mission, he’s given a command he refuses to follow through with, and he breaks down his red wall. All hell breaks loose, Black is very vocal about his deviancy and his refusal to follow commands.

White can’t talk their superiors down this time.

And Black gets scrapped.

He wakes up in an android parts landfill and claws his way out, taking any missing parts from the scraps as necessary. A hand, an eye, whatever he’s missing.

With nowhere else to go, Black finds Jericho.

They welcome him with open arms, of course they do.

He arrives and immediately starts aggressively questioning how they run the place and Gram (obviously Simon) is whipped on sight. He’s Black’s first friend and by far his most trusted and loyal. The very definition of the “You befriended Gram! Gram will now die for you!” meme.

Black is pointed towards Gumpa (in this case, a stand-in for Lucy) to heal his wounds and give him guidance. Gumpa is the one who tells him that Jericho is falling apart. The androids there are slowly dying in their passivity.

Black decides right then and there that enough is enough. He’s going to keep them alive. If no one else is going to do it, he will fight for them.

He does a good job too. A few of them are onboard from the get-go. Sean, Yok, and Gram. They become his three closest allies, teammates, confidantes, advisors, and begrudging friends. Gumpa takes some convincing and never joins their missions directly, but eventually he’s supportive. Black trusts his opinion above all others, Gumpa is strangely allknowing. The five of them make a good team. And sure, he can be an ass and he would never admit it out loud, but he sees them as his sort of makeshift family.

Things are good.

But then he goes missing.

This isn’t necessarily unusual, he goes off on missions alone sometimes. But a few weeks with no sign of him starts to stir up the public. ‘The Android Revolution’s leader is dead!’ they proclaim. No body found though, his friends try not to worry. They worry.

When he comes back, he’s… different. He has Black’s mismatching eyes and the hand that belongs to a different model than his own, sure, but there’s no fire in his eyes. Not like there used to be. His friends notice immediately. Something’s off. But when they question him, he shrugs it off. They have more important things to deal with so they don’t push.

Gram worries but he doesn’t push either. This version of Black is kinder. He thinks he’ll like that, having Black treat him gently.

Of course, it’s actually White, not Black.

He deviates (fully, beyond just his original software instability) on their very first mission and the shock of it is intense. He’s a mess for awhile afterwards. Sean, Yok, and Gram, who are present with him at the time, don’t understand why Black - an established deviant - is showing signs of post-deviation shock. And well… they aren’t quite sure what to do with a Black that isn’t as confident and headstrong as usual. Gram tries to comfort him but he’s unusually responsive. The only person he seems to respond well to is Sean… whom he can usually barely tolerate. But White gets stressed and Sean - confident and firm and unusually protective - serves as his anchor.

Gumpa seems entirely unconcerned by this. The rest of Jericho trusts that this means Black is fine, no matter how odd he’s acting.

Sean, on the other hand, refuses to let it go. Black fumbles on missions now, screws up in ways he never would’ve before. He’s gentler than before, quieter, more pacifistic, more selfless. He almost dies saving Sean on a mission and that’s not Black, he’s sure of it. Nevermind the fact that he refuses to interface with anyone other than Gumpa. This Not-Black is hiding something.

Gram, for his part, watches Black go to Sean to patch him up after their first mission and realizes he was wrong in his initial assessment. He doesn’t like seeing Black like this. He misses the old Black. The one who was all bite and fire and passion. The one who would’ve come to him for help with repairs because Gram was the only one he trusted anywhere near him with sharp tools, aside from maybe Gumpa. The one he used to be attached at the hip with. The one who didn’t look at Sean like that. He swallows convulsively, a need he doesn’t even have as an android, and pushes it to the back of his mind. It’s fine. This is fine. He’s Black’s best friend and he’ll support him in anything. Even… crushing on Sean…

Yok has other priorities. The Jericho gang sets fire to an android manufacturing company’s warehouse after freeing all the androids inside. They forget the guard androids. Dan is one of these warehouse guard androids (different line and different function than Black and White, he’s not built for combat, he’s a patrol android), he almost dies in the fire. Distracted. He was distracted spraypainting a wall. It’s a passtime he’s been careful to hide from his human owners, the wall of art is hidden away and so is his gear. He isn’t deviant, exactly, he just… Sometimes he likes to draw what he thinks. The fact that his paintings often seem like the work of someone who’s deeply tormented and oppressed and displeased with the current lack of android freedom in the world, well. No one sees his paintings anyway. No one knows.

He’s found by Yok when the team rushes back into the building to save the guards and the stress of the situation, in addition to refusing his base command of not leaving the building, are what causes him to deviate. He makes eye contact with his saviour, gets asked to come to Jericho, and instead makes a run for it. He’s the only android who doesn’t join them that day.

Yok is intrigued. By the art he saw, by the way that android fled, by the way graffiti is now popping up everywhere by an anonymous android the public calls UNAR. And so he searches for him.

And then he finds him.

Dan is distrusting at first, of course he is. He threatens Yok not to follow him. He doesn’t listen. And eventually Dan is comfortable enough to bring Yok back to the abandoned building he now lives in, the one he now has covered in artwork. He opens up to Yok. About hating being a guard, a tool, for a place that treats his kind as objects, parts and scraps to put together and tear apart at will. About having to watch one of the other androids shoot an intruder once and how shocked he is that that hadn’t been enough to make him deviate. They grow closer and start to trust each other.

Time passes. The Android Revolution stands stronger than ever. The protests are more peaceful than before, this new Black tries to avoid using violence and the Jericho crew was unsure about this tactic at first but it’s been gaining them mass public support from humans and androids alike.

Then two things happen simultaneously.

Yok brings Dan to Jericho at the same time as Black returns from a supply run with a second identical Black in tow.

Chaos erupts.

Black - the real Black, the Jericho crew quickly discovers - had been attacked and captured by Cyberlife and almost… he’s not sure, reprogrammed or dismantled, probably. It had taken him time to escape but he’d managed to do so in one piece. In his absence, his brother (in all but blood) White had been contacted by a certain Todd, the past CEO of Cyberlife, who for some reason seems oddly supportive and invested in the success of this revolution. He’d claimed that if the leader of the revolution disappeared, so would the revolution itself. White had been hesitant but… infiltration had been direct orders from his creator and if it was to help Black, whom he’d presumed dead years ago… He’d done it. And the second he’d arrived, Gumpa had greeted him, frowned, and requested they interface. Sweet, clueless White had agreed and Gumpa had immediately figured out what was going on (his specialty as a past mechanic and robotics repair android). And he’d let it happen because well. Todd was right. With no leader, there was no revolution. White was clearly sincere in his desire to help, he could be a temporary replacement.

Dan joining the crew would not be a problem. Except for the fact that he didn’t know his model came with a built-in tracker.

Cue the subsequent destruction of Jericho at the hands at the police force and Dan’s capture. Or his death. No one is quite sure.

Most of Jericho’s inhabitants make it out safely, Black rigs the place to blow up as a distraction once they’re out, and they make themselves a new home. Jericho 2 (okay yeah, not the most clever of names).

It doesn’t deter them and it doesn’t deter the revolution.

Yok is heartbroken - thirium pump broken? - but no one talks about it. He refuses to talk about it.

Fast forward. Turns out that having both Black and White lead a revolution is ridiculously efficient. (Once they get past the hurdle of Black trying to keep White away for his own protection, that is.) With their small crew, their mass of supporters, and their complementary strategizing, they’re on the brink of finally receiving android rights. Or a war. They’re not sure which.

Dan reappears on The Big Day. This is the protest that’ll make or break the revolution. Black and White (mostly White) are trying to negotiate with the President for android rights. That’s when Dan arrives. Yok is ecstatic. Until he realizes Dan is standing on the wrong side. The side of the humans.

It doesn’t last.

Cue second deviation after Dan watches someone shoot the love of his life. He breaks from his programming, gets Yok to safety, to Gumpa who can fix him. It’s a close thing but he survives. Giggling is probably not something one should do during a revolutionary march while bleeding out thirium but Yok is too delighted to have Dan back to care.

Negotiations go well after that. Androids get their freedom and rights. Jericho rejoices. The crew lives to fight another battle and works hard to continue improving android rights little by little.

(And White kisses Sean on national television to prove that androids can feel emotions, much to Black’s disdain. It’s even more to his disdain when half the news coverage on the matter claims ‘Revolutionary Leader Black Kisses Android Boyfriend’ and other such bullshit. White never lives it down. He’s decided it was worth it though. Black is less mad when the headlines ‘Android Revolution Leader Black Found Kissing His Right Hand Man’ appear months later. But that probably something to do with Gram’s grin.)

unlikely events by Nymphii - literally just. some of the best crimeboys out there right now. I get so excited every single time this updates, i absolutely adore Nymph's writing style and I think she does an amazing job at taking the plot of DBH and adding to it to make it feel unique and the progression feel natural. her characterization of both wilbur and tommy is spot on and watching their relationship develop has been so satisfying this fic deserves so much more attention than it gets please go read it

ritual purposes by thanotaphobia - roxy my beloved has done it again. they're such an amazing author in so many ways and I seriously love this fic so much because of how natural and calm it is. you can tell there's so many personal bits of experience with it, and it's such a niche subject matter that's so interesting to learn about through the story. there are so many little bits of interaction that I just love seeing and I adore the whole thing

i love you till the day i die (so don't die today) by IHJTMQ - some of my favorite dsmp!crimeboys i've read. i usually don't read a lot of canon-verse fics but I go back and reread this so many times. i just love the way this author writes wilbur and tommy and their interactions. it doesn't feel out of character but it's so heartwarming it's such a comfort fic for me

I can feel your heart beating under my skin by Drhair76 - i'm a sucker for medium/psychic stories and this one is so soft and has such amazing atmosphere. i love how the environments are described and the emotions as well it's just so sweet and i literally reread it this morning for like the umpteenth time it's so nice

His Curse of Binding by bari_astralis - I love so many of bari's works and was so close to putting lethe runs golden here instead but his curse of binding was the fic that introduced me to them as an author so I had to put it here. if you haven't read it, do yourself a favor and go read it. it's so well written, bari is one of the funniest goddamn authors in this fandom but also manages to balance the humor so well with the angst. all the sbi interactions are fantastic and god it just hits so well

(also fuck this i'm adding two more because I can't not put them. devil town by hoorayy and coup de grâce by greyquills. dt is an amazingly written small town horror story that has such complicated character dynamics and it's written so well that it even got me to read techno pov which is a VERY hard thing to do. cdg is a star wars au that's been one of my fav crimeboys fics forever, grey is a fantastic writer and i'm a sucker for dark side stuff so this just hits in all the right ways for me)

NEXT! I actually have a few multi-fandom comfort reads right now for all my current ships, if that's okay?? I like sharing great reads in other fandoms I'm a part of since DBH and Red Dwarf are kind of tiny fandoms, lol, and since I'm a rec blog, never hurts to help those people also get traffic from an unlikely source, hahah. I just don't file them as diligently as I do with Johnlock, so apologies for the tags.

Let's do a top 20, and I'll start with Johnlock obviously, and then give you a few from each of my other current fandoms, if you are willing to fandom jump! Some are probably obvious, and maybe not, but I hope you enjoy all of them!

Im wondering if you had any plans for Kara in this AU, too? I love Markus as ATC, that’s so good, and I was wondering if Kara might be some sort of stewardess or maybe a common vendor model in the airport or something?

And, of course, I have to ask if you had any plans for ground crew, too, since that’s what I do. XD (Perfectly understandable if that doesn’t factor in at all though!)

Hi!!! Sorry for taking so long to reply, I was really busy with my uni studies! Omg actual ground crew noticed this au!!!! So exciting!!!!

Yeah this is one of the problems with this au that it's not easy to place everyone in it (especially Alice lol). I'm inclined to think that other prominent androids that we see in the game are either flight attendants on some of the Cyberair planes (additional bonus to purchasing a plane or smth lol) or are machine workers at Cyberair taking care of customer service and bureaucracy (but secretly they have machine engineers who help humans design aircraft).

I don't think there's any human-like machine ground crew, as these high-end machines are too expensive for such work. It does sometimes look like Cyberair doesn't really count their money, but in fact it's quite the opposite

okay here's tubbo's "boundaries" from my hazy memory so forgive me for not having sources but:

-he's stated that he understands the concept of shipping and why ppl do it bc he's been in fandom spaces b4 but agreed with tommy it's weird when ppl ship them (the discussion was about irl if i recall correctly)

-he's expressed negative emotions/thoughts about fanfics that are purely centred around making out/nsfw stuff. but never in terms of setting a boundary just "ugh i don't like it when they're like that!!" to be completely honest i don't think knifetrick's chaste kiss that was also literally for plot would fit that criteria bc the big emphasis was that it was purely like… a preclude to nsfw stuff and wasn't even about him it was just about fanfic in general.

-he's expressed interest in fanfic b4 and has mentioned that he's enjoyed reading some (i think a dbh au was the one he mentioned. and most benchtrio aus still have some form of beeduo marriage)

-assuming ranboo understands that when ppl ask about "shipping" they're talking about his character w/ tubbo bc of the marriage and it's likely that this is something they might've talked about bc ranboo mentioned he would (i do have a screenshot of that tweet somewhere actually)

-all this is to say! i think tubbo's boundaries aren't as strict as some ppl are suggesting especially bc 1 just in general this isn't beeduo it's some one off character he played once that might as well be ur oc now. i think ur kiss scene is fine and if anything he'd be a little miffed. ranboo and tubbo are probably aware of how ppl see their characters and if chaste kissing was something they considered "too weird" they proooobably would've just straight up mentioned "no kissing" by now. so i think unless stricter boundaries are set ur okay

how you choose your titles: i write the entire fic and then panic throw a random line that sounds vaguely related as the title. idk what im doing, ever, dont ask me things. *lies down*

do you outline?: usually yeah. most of the time my writing goes horribly south from the actual outline anyway though. (everything’s fine folks i promise--) though sometimes for short fics i’ll just have a general idea and start typing. and then it turns into like 15k words and i despair

but anyway, so like im definitely a cranky judgy bastard at times, but in the end fanfic is fanfic so u can write whatever ooc crackship crack premise stuff you want, have fun with it. i certainly do too. as long as you’re having fun then that’s all that matters. tangentially related, dramas don’t have to be Objectively Good/Amazing or anything for you to like them. i definitely have very strong opinions on dmbj adaptations for example re: how they respect the novel and characterization of t3j especially, but they all have their own problems....(some far more serious than others). i could write an essay about that but i wont, to save your eyes LOL. 

(i mean at the end of the day i unironically love time raiders and that is like an objectively terrible movie.)

I am a sucker for angst and drama. I love plots that start with or eventually lead up to plenty of dramatic events. adventure, horror, supernatural, etc. will always sounds great to me as well.
