Chile

In Chile there's (up to Feb 5) 160 wild fires, of which 40 are still trying to be controlled by authorities. The president, Gabriel Boric, has declared State of Emergency in the whole country, and theres a Red Alert Code in most part of the country.

Isla de Chiloé, Southern Chile (900 km away from Santiago de Chile)

This is a (recently controlled) fire that lasted a week, but many neighborhoods were burnt to the ground.

The whole South is in red alert for constant sudden fires that spread quickly due to the lack of rain and the elevated temperatues in the zone. Just today, two fires had to be controlled in the main land next to this island, and more are being reported in the Los Lagos region. This is added to the "controlled" intentional fires that farmers make to clean their fields of old crops along the Central-South parts of the country, mostly surrunding the main route, Ruta 5, that connects the whole country, thus making it hard to see and breathe because of the smoke. (flashnews, most of them get out of control quickly.)

Valparaiso/Viña del Mar, Central Chile (100 km away from Santiago de Chile)

A fire that started on Friday 2nd and grew exponentially because of the wind and the dry, hot climate. More than 100 people are dead, with 70 unrecognized bodies and other 400 that have dissapeared. At least 30000 people that have lost everything to the fire.

There's massive evacuations from this and the neighboring city, Viña Del Mar.

This is said to be the second most deadly fire in the century, surpased by Australia in 2009.

45000+ hectares that include land and neighborhoods have been burnt down.

Argentina

Parque Los Alerces (Esquel), Chubut

The fire strarted on the 25th January, and the climate has made it hard to contain. 3000 hectares of native forest have been burnt to teh ground. It is now growing in the direction of the nearest city, Esquel. Theres been evacuations between yesterday and today (4 and 5th Febuary)

Parque Nahuel Huapi (Bariloche), Río Negro

The reason why im writing this. The city woke up today covered in smoke after a wildfire developed yesterday during the night. The reason? A fireplace that was not turned off in a place where people cannot disembark and can only be reached via boats.

As of now, there's not much information about the fire but hopefully the firefighters will be able to contain it before it reaches Tronador Mountain, where an ancient glaciar is.

...which leads me to the other point i wanted to talk about.

Firefighters

They volunteer to do this job.

In Argentina and Chile, firefighting is not rewarded with a salary, and most of the times they dont even have full firehouses to stay in. These people are at their houses, ready to jump into action and run to the station the second the alarm goes off.

They are neighbors, people that risk their lives and run into danger willingly, just because they want to help the community.

I felt the need to give a shout-out to these people and say:

Don't be a fucking dick, don't start fires in the woods unless it's an approved place, and if you do, TURN IT OFF.

Pour abundant water on it, and do not stop when you don't see any more flames.

Keep pouring water until the ashes don't burn/feel like room temperature in your hand if you put it 10 cm away from it, and even then, pour some more just to be sure.

No heat and no smoke mean a safely extinguished fire.

Save lives and forests.

Lore topics I enjoy thinking about for Mass Effect Trilogy Week:

Biotics: I remember countless conversations about biotics that made me look at the wiki to check my information, replay parts of the game and in general pay attention to how it all works out. I still think there are many things about them that I don't understand right now, and that's why I love it. It makes you think! Each species will deal with it in a different way too, they have their own history with their biotics and how they use them. For humans, L2 biotics like Kaidan are always a source of wonder to me. Sure, you can picture a badass biotic like Aria and 100% she showed extreme power during the Omega DLC so that's really fascinating to me as well, but to have those implants and to be able to master Reave?! I also think the lore is not... as solid as it could be regarding how each species treats their biotics. It sometimes feels like a bit of a X-Men situation (they're different, others fear them, possible medical issues...) but it's like the writers don't want to deal with the full implications. And I really wish we could have seen a bit more artistic/cultural displays of biotics. Btw, my biotic sports headcanons are here

Lifespan: I love that each species has a different lifespan and that it really shows in how they live their lives. An asari will not look at their youth like a salarian. Honestly, I'm mad at myself because someone wrote about this in the tag and made a good commentary on it and I can't find the post again. It was about how salarians process thoughts and feelings compared to other species. I hope I can find it soon, and if so I'll reblog it. It's always a fascinating topic!

Artificial intelligence: Geth, EDI and other AIs like SAM are what I mean here. I really do think the topic of designing your own platform should come out more in this universe. I've said it a billion times before but I really want EDI to design her own platform. And I really have no answer, but I have found that all the meta about Legion was always thought-provoking. Was does individuality mean? Does Legion need individuality? Does he need to say "I" or was he better as a collective, as something "other" that was just fine as it was, but we humans just find more meaning in him becoming an individual? Even the words I use here, I'm fully aware I use "he" all the time when refering to Legion, and sometimes I wonder if that's good or not. I don't know. 

Justice system: I've made one big post about it (9 years ago haha), but I really find the Spectres fascinating, as well as each species' version of judges/soldiers/spies/agents/workers etc. And prisons.

The trade language: EVERYWHERE in the game and we have so little information compared to the Quarian's language???

And my favorite lore: everything related to the krogan. I really think it ties to what Bakara says about being her Shaman's initiation being a brutal one "But an illuminating one. You learn to appreciate the light by living in the dark."  I love that their species not because they're perfect but because they're imperfect in a way that speaks to me. They understand despair, the deepest kind. They understand anger. And they're constantly underestimated. But I find a lot of beauty, joy and humor in them. I also love that they're rarely lying or playing games, they will tell you the honest truth and you either take it or leave it.

saw @tma-thoughts ‘s post talking about not enough butch charles rowland and wanting to see more butch4femme painland and naturally I spent the entire rest of my day brainstorming, researching, and then drawing this time period accurate (to the best of my abilities) butch!Edwin(a? Edie?) x femme!Charles (definitely Charlotte/Charlie)

I have whole spreads of photo references for both of them but in case anyone is interested, Charles is inspired by rudegirl/ska punk/skinhead/punk/goth feminine aesthetics from the 1980s UK (even more specifically by the band The Bodysnatchers) while Edwin is inspired mainly by sportswear for women in the 1910s as well as what photos I could find of teenage girls during that era! in terms of Edwin reading as butch, I wanted to combine the shortest hair I could get away with (for the era and while still reading as Edwin—too 20s reads as too fashion forward which is not the vibe), as well as balance the line between sportswear (which imo reads as butch) and Edwin’s usual fashions. I also kept her makeup-free, accessory-free, and overall more “practical” in her dress to try and read as more butch. something to note that you don’t see here— Edwin is 100% wearing bloomers/trousers either as part of or underneath this skirt. I couldn’t get it to read correctly in the design but I need you to know they’re there lmao

So when first playing through WRoEF, this little tidbit seems like an innocuous little gag about Edie Finch’s love of tall-tales - but anyone that pays attention to what comes later…

Can tell that this ‘Moleman’ is clearly just poor Walter Finch.

And while I agree with the general assessment that, like, with the context that it’s Walter, Dawn was 100% right to get mad. It’s pretty fucked-up that Edie is encouraging these kind of rumors about her only surviving child who lives every day in misery and fear. But I think that some folks don’t dig enough into why Edie did it or why it was so fucked-up.

I don’t think Edie was primarily doing it for a laugh or just the attention. More than anything, the Moleman reminds me of…

This is just Edie’s grief coping mechanism. Basically the entire game is about how this is Edie’s grief coping mechanism. She loves to spin wild and fantastical tales of the people she loses. 

The really fucked-up about the Moleman Story is that Walter was still alive at the time. Edie’s son was still living and breathing at the time and his mother was treating him the same as she did his dead dad!

And that really emphasizes Edie’s complicity in Walter’s misery. In her mind, as soon as he locked himself in that bunker - the Curse had already claimed his life. Did she ever try to talk him out of his self-imposed imprisonment? Probably not. She had already determined that he’s going to live and die in this bunker.

There’s a reason why Walter is one of the few Finches with two memorialization shrines. The first being in his ‘room’ - the Bunker where the Curse first took his life away from him…

And the second being in the location of his actual death.

And the thing with this Angle is… despite Dawn calling out Edie about the Moleman News Story - she’s actually at fault for treating Walter the same way. Not as a Moleman, of course, but as if he was already dead.

One of the things that disturbs Edith the most about Walter’s story is the realization that he was alive during her early childhood - and her mother never told her he was down there. Not when he was still alive and not when he died. 

She specifically blames that on Dawn and not Edie and I think that’s the right call. After all, hiding details about the tragedies of the Finch Family is not really on-brand for Edie but it’s pretty much Dawn Finch’s whole thing!

While Dawn might’ve thought that spreading rumors that Walter is a Moleman was in poor taste, she doesn’t actually disagree with Edie’s root assertion- which is that there’s nothing to be done to get Walter out of that bunker and he’s basically already dead.

Both Edie and Dawn actually did the same fundamental thing to Walter. They buried a thing while it was still alive.

A short list of some platonic friendships I headcanon exist in the series (does not include ones like Garrus and Tali where it's extremely clear no matter how you play, and doesn't include any Shepard for obvious reasons):

Garrus and Ashley- I just think they'd vibe hard. They both specialize in rifles, so I can see that being something they'd bond over. They're also stationed in the same part of the ship on the SR-1, so I can see them just casually chatting. Also, in 3, after the coup Garrus says it's "good to have Ash back" and genuinely seems to mean it. (He's glad if Kaidan is the survivor too, btw, I just think he and Ashley would vibe more personality wise.)

Kaidan and Liara- I think they just have really complimentary personalities. Maybe they originally start talking about biotics, but I feel like they'd quickly just start talking about anything and everything. Once again, it feels like they'd just vibe hard, especially in 1.

Mordin and Chakwas- I feel like Chakwas would see Mordin as a breath of fresh air compared to everyone else on the ship. She's probably be concerned at some of his mad scientist tendencies, but I feel like they'd have a healthy respect of each other and enjoy talking about different treatments over coffee or tea.

Kasumi and Tali- I remember seeing someone point out that Kasumi has all the gossip, and Tali mentions that everyone in the Migrant Fleet gossips about everyone else. You can see where I'm going here. (Bonus: Joker has also showed up to some of their gossip sessions.)

Grunt and Jack- They spar together. That's it. They barely even talk otherwise. They consider the other to be the best friend they've ever had.

Thane and Samara- They never talk about it, but I feel like they'd sense that the other understands what it's like to fail your child, and a certain kinship forms from it. They don't talk about Thane's occupation either, but that doesn't stop them from just meditating together to relax and recharge.

Zaeed and Garrus- Actually this one is 100% one-sided on Zaeed's side. He saw Archangel's career and immediately assumed they're birds of a feather. Garrus really doesn't agree for countless reasons and finds any excuse not to talk to Zaeed at any point.

Garrus and EDI- This arises because Garrus is just polite to EDI and says "thank you" when she gets him some calculation he needs for his calibrations and doesn't completely freak out about her being an AI. Humble beginnings, and Garrus doesn't realize he's probably EDI's third favorite person at this point. Does consider her a friend too though.

Wrex and Victus- Yes, they're friends. No, not even the threat of death would be enough to get them to admit this.

Also, literally everyone has a soft spot for Tali.
