Thaumcraft 4 wands will always be more preferred to me over the gauntlets any day. The amount of customization and personality allowed in a wand was a lot and i liked the feeling it gave me of twisting the world in a delicate and precise manner to avoid the laws of the world. The gauntlet just makes me feel like shitty knockoff thanos, when I make a character with wands I can reflect their personality into the cores and caps, it can have significance, maybe they have a wand that doesnt fully worth with their foci because it got passed down to them! thats neat! thats interesting! meanwhile the gauntlets feel cheap and mass produced.
There's no connection i have to my gauntlet like I had with my wands, and that takes out a lot of the fun for me. I like having a lot of customization in things to slightly differentiate characters, maybe one uses a reed core because theyre more pacifistic, or this ones more evil coded so it uses a bone core, while there is technically ways to min-max the wand, it never feels required. The wands felt more like an extension of my will and self then the gauntlets ever had

Thaumcraft moved on from wands in Tc6, so I wanted to do some service to the various 'casting gauntlets' added by it and some of the addons to it.
Casting Gauntlet "A more modern interpretation of Auromantic manipulation tools, the Caster's gauntlet is built off of studies into the nature of vis in its natural, primal state itself, and how best to harness it without exploiting and potentially destroying the natural sources of aura. thus endangering the balance of the local environment. Initial studies into this topic came from the properties of both the sojourner's wand cap, and the amber wand core. The design of the Gauntlet includes an energized amber lens for the drawing in of vis directly from the local environment, while the ergonomic and practical 'glove' design allows for more direct manipulation of vis as if it were an object one could wield. Some would say this is like reinventing the wheel, and they could very well be right. The iron used in its construction is prone to corrosion through extended use, and personally I would not trust a thin sheet of leather to protect me from all matter of spells that these devices can sling. This is a prototype to eventually be replaced." (Do I reaaaally need to say where its from? -.-)
Silver Plated Casting Gauntlet “Building off of the original design, changing out some fittings with more arcanely aligned metals such as gold and silver provides a slight boost in efficiency, and greatly reduces wear and tear from channeling.” (Not based off of anything actually, but I feel this would be a logical next step for base thaumcraft.)
Thaumium Casting Gauntlet “The charged thaumium that makes up this gauntlet’s build has twofold uses, it both allows for a greatly more efficient channeling tool, and a great bludgeon when vis is not so available. Unfortunately, the nature of thaumium means that its channeling ability degrades with wear and tear, though fortunately not nearly as fast as thaumium wands would.” (Based on Thaumic Revelation’s addition to the CG formula. A greatly appreciated addition tbh)
Elarium Casting Gauntlet “This extremely gaudy tool can directly channel psionic energies into more vis, and it greatly improves the users mechanical ability over the tidal forces of this world. Directly applying so much elarium to oneself however can have some damaging effects on the psyche. Just like with Elarium caps, there are much better uses for the substance than this…” (Not really based on anything, I just wanted to expand the repertoire a bit. This one is more worldbuilding than game design)
Alchemist’s Casting Gauntlet “New. Improved. With 30% more alchemy. This gauntlet is perfect for a burgeoning alchemist, with its highly durable materials, heat and chemical resistant lining, as well as inbuilt pipe management tools, it is a great deal! You can even pump certain essentia into it for a variety of boosts to its efficiency, power, or the like.” (Not really based on anything, I just wanted to expand the repertoire a bit.)
Voidseer’s Casting Gauntlet “It was only logical to take the next step from Thaumium, developing a gauntlet made from both voidmetal and shadowmetal would ensure its survivability long after other gauntlets would be worn out. Its Voidmetal build also allows it to draw in aura faster and more efficiently. It even allows for further tinkering, especially with forces of pure vis harvested from the warp itself, colloquially known as Impetus.” (Based on the Voidmetal gauntlet from Thaumic Augmentation.)
NovaCorp™️ Casting Gauntlet “The latest in aural manipulation and the field of aspectual science as a whole, the Casting Gauntlet (sponsored by NovaCorp™️) will revolutionize how you go about your daily lives! By pulling Aura directly out of the local region into its internal reservoir, it will pretty much always* remain charged! Manipulate arcana! Throw fireballs! But in AEON they aren't the CC, so /shrug)

This is me on my thaumcraft 4 Minecraft server since I've been researching forbidden magic. My warp is high enough that I occasionally burst into flames or emit around 100 bats from my skull.
sorry for the warp spasm

The thaumcraft mad has got to be one of the best mods that tells a story through theming. It’s highly technical but still has an air of mystery and mystical ness to it. One of the consent underlining things is knowledge man wasn’t really men to know and the consequences of opening your eyes to eldritch truths. Of controlling the fundamentals of the world and what that can do for you and to the world your in and to you. Plus the fact that version 4 has intergration with every other big magic mod and some of the tech modes of the time and it’s just fun as hell to play
I think you might have sent me this ask right as I was playing a huge Minecraft modpack with some friends and trying to help them with Thaumcraft... the timing is just uncanny. (I'm specifically in charge of trying to get those empowering bees that you can use to overcharge nodes to crazy levels. Oh how I love modded Minecraft.)
Anyway, I do really love Thaumcraft - it's a cool combination of magic and technology in a Minecraft mod, and as you said the theming is amazing. (It's actually one of the inspirations for the ancient technology in Antarctic Oscillation.) I've always been a big fan of stuff like that in general, and Thaumcraft does it really well, with a whole lot of eldritch investigation on the side once you get to the higher levels. It's just very fun!

juicing room beginning to get out of hand
but soon I’ll have what I need to resume construction on house
and then I can make an actual juicing room with like dedicated storage space
once I make that wand that can recharge terra vis without input I can mine freely and pickaxes will be a thing of the past
also I can mine through waterfalls which will of course be an issue when digging around on the seabed

I always love watching people play Minecraft, but I always end up feeling sorry for all the Endermen that have to get killed to go to the End.
My poor lanky boys...
#my stuff#rambling#Minecraft#*through tears* They're a comfort creature for me okay??? (/hj)#(Also sucks that my favorite mod is Thaumcraft 4 and that I have to kill Endermen to get ender shards at some point in order to progress)#(Just looked them up and they're from an add-on mod and THEY'RE USED TO MAKE ICHOR NO WONDER I'D PUSH THROUGH THE GUILT)#(Ichor makes SUPER good wand cores and wand caps in later research. Those suckers can hold 1000 vis at a time and it's INSANE)#(Pretty sure it's also used to make pretty good armor but I play in creative so I rarely ever make any armor outside of robes ^^;)

Honestly same, happened with purple as well, although I already liked purple quite a bit.
Random Wednesday thought: Started really liking green ever since being aro became my primary and most precious queer identity
#acearo#ace#aro#I liked purple because of thaumcraft 4#then liked it even more when I realised I was ace#still don’t like yellow though despite being aroace

New Thaumcraft addon (1.7.10) dropped 👀
Looks very promising just glancing through it. Will definitely be integrating some of the ideas there into my headcanon.
I’d ask them to include the Thaumic Dyes cultists but the discord is all in Russian 😭

Some series have enough submissions that it will take multiple preliminary polls to decide the best flag. For the polls, I am counting fan games and mods as separate from their series of origin.
Thank you to everyone for your submissions!

Thaumcraft thoughts again but this time I'm thinking gameplay rather than lore. Comparing 4 and 6.
To start off, 6 is obviously unfinished. This alone means in a comparison w/ no addons 4 wins without a doubt.
Still, even without addons there are interesting points to make here based on what we saw in thaumcraft 6 and what we might have seen if azanor didn't fall down a well or whatever.
Fundamentals: The first tab of the 'nomicon is far more straightforward, and much less likely to give a new player an aneurysm as soon as they open the book. The only part of this I dislike is how long it takes to get to golemancy. The research system is explained on this tab, but we'll save that for last.
Auromancy: Auromancy in 6 is far more fleshed out than in 4. Plus, I personally prefer the casting gauntlet to wands. It feels much more thaumcraft, and less fairy tale magic. You're using your gauntlet to force the world to your desires. It's badass. And the modular focus system allows you to accomplish so much more. The excavate focus in 4 is a joke. It's slow, the range isn't great and it doesn't do enchants. It makes you feel sad and wet and pathetic. In 6, you make a plan silk touch excavate lvl 2 focus and you tear out 5x5 blocks of raw stone. You feel like a thaumic god, shaping the world to your desire. Is it balanced? Absolutely not. Having auromancy draw from the chunk-based vis system is hilariously broken. Vis cost doesnt matter because you move 8 blocks over and all your magic is back. But so much in thaumcraft is underpowered for the required time and effort compared to other mods, that it's nice to feel powerful for once. Ofc its limited by the small amount of effects in base tc6, but we're going to discount that for fairness.
Golemancy: The tc6 (and possibly 5? idk I never played that version) version of this mechanic is much more useful and interesting. Making golems is a pain in the ass now but theres so much more depth with the customization system. And not having to make a new golem for each task in your process makes life much easier. Though it must be said with how cheap golems were in 4 you could get a golem-based farm up and running much faster. It suffers in some areas, combat golems being pretty much useless except as bodyguards, in which case they try their best ig.
Artifice: The new arcane bore is slightly less expensive and clunky, but it's still ass. Splitting artifice and infusion was an excellent decision. The vis generator is a great addition, though it feels simultaneously underpowered and overpowered - it's basically free, but the generation is so bad you need a few to get the same power as an IE windmill and you'll burn through the aura eventually.
Infusion: Again, splitting this into it's own category is common sense. There are a few interesting new things in this tab: the verdant charms, especially the feeding one, are excellent QOL. The stabilizers and upgrades are good too, but I dislike having to purposefully destabilize an infusion to unlock the research, especially as its essential for what little endgame there is in base. I think the eldritch and void stone altars are new in this version, but they're unobtainable in base.
Alchemy: Tubes work better now. It's a fun time. The transducers are better tho, and can easily trivialize essentia organisation. Hedge alchemy I think is also new, and it adds some nice utility. Aversio is a nicer name than telum and no one liked Arbor anyway.
The Eldritch: Lol. Lmao.
And finally, Research:
NIGHTMARE NIGHTMARE NIGHTMARE
WHAT DO YOU MEAN I HAVE TO STOP RESEARCHING TO GO MAKE A DAYLIGHT SENSOR? OR GET A PHIAL OF AN ASPECT ONLY FOUND IN SHOES? OR WAIT FOR A SPECIFIC PHASE OF THE GODDAMN MOON?? WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH WHAT IM ACTUALLY RESEARCHING?
It's somehow simpler and infinitely more tedious than the tc4 mechanic. At least that was a minigame, albeit a tedious, frustrating game that required multiple thaumonomicon dives (or, yk, an online tool). It also doesn't make sense. Nothing I'm doing here relates to what I'm trying to learn. In 4, the research pattern often had fun nods to what you were actually doing, like having Venenum in a research about poison, or linking all the primals for a late game research. Celestial observations suck. I sleep at night I'm not gonna grab my scribing tools and paper to scribble a drawing of the moon. MC Eternal lets you buy curiosities, which just makes everything so much nicer.
Moving on.
In terms of things I would have liked to not be left behind in 4, firstly I'd like my goddamn outer lands please. Also centivis, but without nodes it really wouldn't make sense. Tbh the whole chunk based aura system is a bit meh, it breaks a lot though it is convenient.
I was going to discuss addons in this post but this is already really long and I'm tired so I'll save that for another day.

wait! Spark will embroider enchantments (prot 5 usually) on the people he cares abouts clothing items. Everyone gets a personalized design for them! Nobody knows about the enchantments because the best part about secret helpful armor pieces are the fact that they are secret, and best way to keep it a secret is not telling anyone. This does however lead to it not getting worn by some for various reasons. the heavier and the multitude of the enchantments means for a bigger design, so there are some that feel bad about wearing it out in case it gets ruined (Jeriah) or counterintuitive (Mot). When Martha and her brother were younger a lot of their clothes contained stars and moons beaded and embroidered by her father, being older now she understands that that was one of the ways he showed he cared, but now she views wearing such things as childish.
Spark definitely plays favorites and this is just one of the ways in which he does, not everyone will get an enchantment embroidered. Those that will are: Alyssa, Jeriah, Mot, Martha, Sonja, Capsize, Dianite, and Andor!
my working Spark headcanon of the day, is that just like the season one pirates, he doesn’t wear armor. At least that’s what it looks like. His clothes have enchantments threaded as various designs (from floral to spirals), making it look inconspicuous that it’s enchanted in the first place. Being costly to make he only has a few different outfits to mix and match with. It probably counts as like light leather armor.
#mianite#thinkin about designs 4 everyone#the thing is enchantment placement + enchantment + design is super important and dependent per person#for capsize I can definitely imagine a captains coat with ocean waves on the coat tail and sleeve edges (maybe even a whole ocean scene)#sonja having Thaumcraft themed desgins going up her pant leg and it’s more of the design on one leg than the other#Dianite gets a lil handkerchief that he can put in his suit with a matching tie#so on so forth
