The responses to this tumblr/and the twitter version look like another case where people feel attacked personally because they like a thing and it's just another thing on the list of things that we find out that people are exploited to make. Capital! And it happens so often now that it is beyond overwhelming.

Everything in life we like or used to like we find out is ruining peoples lives to make. Every time we discover a new way in which we as a consumer contribute to some evil financially it always feels like we're being accused of being bad for liking the thing. Even though you're not bad for liking the cool graphics and sounds and stuff, those things are cool. It's just you'll have to pay for those things, and it's not going to be cheap! To pay these people properly we'd have to pay a LOT MORE for these games to cover all the costs so we end up with microtransactions which ruin the base games instead of adding to them... and already the cost of games feels too much.

So if the cost of the games feels too much, but getting the higher end graphics cost more, AND we hate microtransactions, then the sentiment for "worse graphics" sounds perfect. Let's have graphics at the level they can be without overwork for the price we are willing to pay for a game. And what level is that? Well with graphics engines that you can license to do most of the work for you, so things like graphical effects can still be pretty high, but you'll have to accept a lot of reused assets and animations and simplified models and some mismatched stuff. Yakuza/Like a Dragon fans are probably going to be just fine with that. The later Like a Dragon games might be the level of graphics you could reasonably expect for the cost, honestly.

It's not just gaming either, recently clip studio had a drama where users were mad they were adding a subscription service to it. These same people still expected that the program would keep getting support/features to be added for free forever. They got given the choice to keep the program as is without paying extra or to pay and keep getting patches, and this was upsetting. However, these features cost money to make, they aren't nothing features, and the people who work on it should be paid, and they can't be paid if the customers get everything for free.

A company that charges you a lot more is Adobe, who so many people hate - completely missing the point that optimising programs at the level they do to get them to run as well as they do is a lot of time by a lot of people who are experts in so many things. An example is how in photoshop if you gaussian blur it works immediately, and in clip studio paint which is a lot cheaper it takes quite a while, that's because the price to optimise the function speed/payments for using higher end algorithms etc are beyond that which the price you've all paid for CSP is, but the cost of adobe products means they can put the money back into make it better. You get what you pay for!!

when i say 'i want worse graphics', some ppl assume i mean 'i want stylyzed instead of realistic' then get mad at me for saying it wrong (???) so let me be clear:

i want worse graphics. i want the models topology to be a bit off, i want the rigging to have a few verts mis-weighted, i want the final model to not be accurate to the concept art cuz it would have been too labor intensive to make the scarf that long. i want the shading to do the thing where a real time character shadow is casting on top of another baked in shadow. i want whatever eases the devs workload and prevents crunch so they can go home to their loved ones and actually enjoy their life outside of work

We are well beyond canary in the coalmine warning levels with the way trans people and particularly trans women are treated on this site.

Maybe you've heard the metaphor of allowing wolves and sheep to share the same space, welcoming everyone. You end up with just wolves because allowing them in that space makes it unsafe for any sheep. Or the story about how a nazi goes into a dive bar and is refused service. The bartender then explains to someone else at the bar that if you serve them once they tell their friends and before you know it you're the nazi bar they all go to and normal customers don't feel safe.

Terfs and other bigots are seeing these targeted harassment campaigns succeed against trans women and rejoicing. They see Tumblr ban them and officially stand by those decisions as endorsement for their harassment. It's a sign to bigots across the internet that Tumblr is a good place for them.

And what's more is that a lot of us probably don't realize just how much trans women contribute to Tumblr. The women banned recently were sources of site-wide memes and posts I wasn't even aware originated from them.any years old memes and references can be traced back to trans women on this site.

How many of these folks have to be removed before this is no longer a site you want to be a part of it? Sure you cultivate your own experience, but you can't follow or interact with people who aren't here. And if I wanted to interact with the nazis and terfs I'd go to reddit.

I encourage everyone to reblog this. Trans women shouldn't have to be the only ones speaking out against the bigotry they're experiencing. They shouldn't be the only ones risking their blogs being nuked by staff. We have to stand with them.
