Alright I've had like 5 hours of sleep but it's fine, let's talk about the parallels between Ryo Marufuji and D.D, the importance of Sho Marufuji to the themes GX tries to convey - whether you wanna admit of not - and as our queen Gaga describes it: The Fame Machine™️

So. On one hand. Ryo Marufuji. He's truly a specimen. A divisive and fascinating character. He's the embodiment of a downward spiral that only gets more and more dire as the series goes on. On the other, D.D. Edo Phoenix' narcissistic adoptive father. These two shouldn't really have any correlation, after all while Ryo and Edo have their conflict, Ryo has nothing to do with D.D or Edo's character arc during the finale of season 2.

Except that D.D's backstory lines up relatively well with Ryo's descent to Hell Kaiserhood. It's just that D.D went the extra mile. And in the end it says a lot about GX's minor themes - that being an exploration of what it means to be successful, how negative influences in your childhood can affect you and liberating yourself from those negative influences.

Let's dive a little bit more into themes. Because all media have themes and purposes no matter how mundane and pointless those purposes are. While ygo GX's purposes is undoubtedly to sell trading cards to teens, its main theme centres around growing up - something a lot of the shounen's primary demographic will heavily relate to. Yugioh GX is a coming of age story about a schoolboy and his friends as they explore the world and grow and change, their pursuit for success and glory and the grief of losing your naive view on the world but coming out a stronger, better person because of it. A lot of that is explored via character arcs and sub-themes, such as Manjoume's season 1 character arc emphasising how much toxic/abusive family members can change and affect how you present yourself to the world and the liberation that comes with cutting them off. Similarly, D.D contributes to this theme via his treatment of Edo and the role he plays in Edo's story as well as weaving a cautionary tale of what can happen to a person when they become so desperate for fame and success that they change permanently for the worse.

But Ryo also follows this theme. Not to the same extreme or in the exact same way, but he does.

Ryo Marufuji starts the series as a 3rd year high school student - just on the cusp of graduation. He's the top of his class. He has it all. He was handpicked and trained by his mentor and trusted with cards of sacred value - ultimately promised success. And did he work hard for that success. He worked so hard he isolated himself from his family and spent every waking moment in the mountains, training.

And then he graduates. His debut duel is with Edo Phoenix. The cycle begins.

Edo crushes Ryo. As in completely destroys him. Nukes him. Ryo doesn't even have a chance. Humiliates him publicly just because he can. Behaviour he learned from D.D - to crush all threats to your career underfoot because nothing else matters. Ryo goes down a spiral. He flunks so hard from the pro leagues he falls all the way down to where even amateurs mock him. He's become the laughing stock of the dueling industry. He hits the underground dueling ring. He has a truly horrific, traumatising experience where he's almost electrocuted to death on top of being humiliated once more. And he comes out a different person. A person who has abandoned all moral compass and dignity and cares only about one thing.

Success.

The cycle has passed from D.D's narcissistic treatment of Edo, to Edo' learned behaviours, to Ryo's Hell Kaiser transformation. In mere episodes to come, Ryo would carry on this cycle in his treatment of Sho, attempting to humiliate, crush and ultimately severely injure him. Even if this act was in an attempt to scare Sho out the entertainment industry, he has contributed to the cycle of abuse and has attempted to inflict his learned ideals of "nothing but success/victory matters anymore". It's this duel that D.D and Ryo truly become parallels.

Like how D.D goes mad over fame, stole precious cards and begins to manipulate and emotionally abuse Edo, Ryo (through Edo's influence) does the same. He goes mad over fame and power, steals the cyberdarks, and comes back to berate and hurt Sho.

The major difference between D.D and Edo vs Ryo and Sho is that while Edo doesn't break the cycle until the damage has been done, Sho manages to successfully break this cycle from the start. Even if he comes out of it zapped half to death and degraded beyond belief, he refuses to let go of the way of life Ryo taught him before he fell from grace. That respect is of utmost importantance.

And when the time comes when Ryo faces the consequences of his insane new lifestyle, Sho steps up to take care of him despite how vile Ryo was to him. Sho takes that step to try and heal their relationship. The cycle of abuse ended with him. And Ryo begins his own personal healing journey as a result. It shows Sho's inner strength - strength he earned from trial and error through the show. Because it takes a lot to break that cycle - after all. Look at Edo.

Honestly if GX was a seinen instead of a shounen and these themes were dwelled into a little more it could have been so profound. Whether the parallel was there on purpose or not, I think they had a good idea going for it if only they went into a little more detail. I could talk about Ryo and how STRANGE his character arc is for an anime who's demographic is like 13-16 year olds or something with his weird exploration of trauma, being failed by the education system (especially as a character that's autistic coded) and weirdly enough?? Borderline hypersexuality?? (That is its OWN can of worms which will require trigger warnings relating to S/H and im not getting into that here, I've rambled enough)

-He's concerned.

-He thinks you're going to hit your head or something else since your not really paying attention to your surroundings.

-He usually has a hand wrapped around your waist just to make sure your safe.

-If you offer to listen to music with him, he'll accept. Perhaps you could dance together.

-I don't think he'd be a very good dancer so you might have to teach him if you know.

-If neither of you know, well you can just look like two idiots having fun.

-When you two dance im the school (if ever) Hanako is going to intervene. He'll probably trip Kou so he'll fall on you making him look like a pervert. And nobody else can see Hanako so they Kou is in the wrong.

-Hanako truly doesn't mean any harm by it, he's just trying to poke some fun.

-If you walk around while listening to music, he's right behind you with his hands on your shoulders to make sure you're safe. This does not change if your eyes are open.

-So, just be careful around him and when you listen to music.

Sakura Nanamie

-It doesn't bother her in the slightest.

-She enjoys the stillness of sound, she's usually caught up with Tsukasa being loud, so just being in the same room as you, but not talking makes her enjoy these times together.

-She knows your not paying attention so she sometimes go up behind you and give a little kiss on your cheek. (Or on the lips depending on how far the relationship has gone.)

-When she wants your attention for either a question or because she simply wants affection, she'll lightly tap your shoulder or rub the back of your hand.

-She ALWAYS asks if you can give her attention beforehand, since she is very much aware of what it's like for someone to be forced into it.

-This also makes it very rare for her to ask for anything, but I'm getting off track.

-It's not a huge part of her life but she still thinks it kinda cute you do it

Tsukasa Yugi

-All he can think is, "Perfect opportunity".

-You're distracted AND can't hear him. He wants to prank or surprise you as much as possible. Having your attention on something else other than him (Which he is a bit offended by) Gives him the chance to shock you.

-At this point, it's not as surprising. The most shocking part is what he tries and do to gain your focus.

-He's given you things he's killed, which the offer is nice, the corpse is not.

-He'll incessantly bother you asking if he can listen to music with you.

-If you refuse, he'll do one of three things.

- 1. Continue to cry and complain

- 2. Take whatever you're listening to music on.

- 3. Get Sakura involved. Which ends up with your device getting confiscated.

-As fun as it is to mess with you, he gets super annoyed if you ignore him completely. And that leads to one of the items above.

-Just as long as you devote your time to mostly him, he's fine with whatever else you do.

gorgeous, very caring sister, strong duelist, and the only woman to ever make Seto Kaiba squirm

anyways. not only as mentioned above is she the first woman to make kaiba squirm, but she was by all means going to beat him if not for the millennium rod's millennium interference. yami marik admits that she's a strong duelist with a strategy that's been working for literal years-- and given that she's not like, a professional duelist, thats pretty impressive

she also recently got some really cool meta bumps and let me point out that an "ishizu deck" now includes obelisk the tormentor-- which we knew she had prior to giving it to kaiba, but i think it only solidifies my opinion that she very much could wield an Egyptian God Card, an exclusive little club for top tier duelists

as a character she presents herself with an amazing amount of poise and grace, shes compassionate and kind and stays with mai and serenity even though she only just met them. shes struggling through living the past 5 years of her life drowning in guilt for her family's tragedy just because she wanted to make her little brother happy and shadi is a fucking liar. shes foretold her own death and marches towards it grimly but with so much love in her heart. and even then shes 20 years old and holds an important position in the egyptian government that typically requires a doctorate degree AND has been dealing with mariks off-and-on bullshit entirely by her lonesome. she also likes to flex her fortunetelling a little which is awesome i think she should do that more that scene where she tells the guy exactly how the stele is being transported was so everything

speaking of shes got such an attitude. "is it your destiny to waste my time?" iconic. never seen before will never be seen again. watch the duel between her va and joeys its so fucking funny

shes excult. shes doesnt flinch in the face of god nor death. seto kaiba and yami marik respect her. shes so sad and so sweet and battle city couldnt have happened without her.

also her parallels with kaiba are what motivate kaiba to give yugi the card he needed to beat marik.

kaiba, in duelist kingdom, was ready to jump off a ledge if yugi didnt let him through to face pegasus while trying to save mokuba out of sheer desperation to save his little brother. he KNOWS what that dedication feels like and the iron kind of will you need to have to make that kind of gamble. isis is being so fucking legit with what shes saying and he respects that and her judgement enough to change his mind and not only watch the duel, but give yugi a card that eventually helps him win, even if he has no real confidence in the odds. but theres a CHANCE, which is the same thing he taught her when he beat her in a duel. the layers its her faith that moves him to act. which is so crazy

Aki Izayoi

An abuse victim who isn't the perfect passive figure but gets to work through her complicated feelings about power, agency, and family. saiyaku wa boku o suki sugiru by ninomiya etsumi. now this one? is a fucking STORY. so bc of their ancestors fucking around one member of a family after a birthday will have to go thru these disasters. basically the world is trying to kill them but the kicker is any injury they get is TRANSFERRED to the person in another family. so basically they have to work together to both not die. its like 7 volumes long and i got bored of the 'gods' talking in riddles abt the disasters but the two main characters make it worth it

kami-sama no uroko by hinohara meguru. i actually don't remember shit abt this one other than how PRETTY the art is and the cool concept. so a writer returns to his hometown that has a legend abt a dragon that used to fuck abt and then he meets the dragon that looks human but swears he's a dragon. the writer is super skeptic and u know....things happen. theres a dog in this one and i love the way he's drawn 🥺

Adding on to my earlier post, how good the original yugioh cast would be at driving a car:

Yugi: 2/10. I’m sorry. The boy is 5 foot max. He needs a cushion to see over the windshield and slightly struggles to reach the break. He’s so so so good at the theoretical stuff and he always knows who has right of way and what all the signs mean. But he makes everyone nervous when he pulls that seat all the way up and is white knuckled with his tight grip on the wheel, stressed until he parks again.

Joey: 5.5/10. Solid driver, grew up with a beat old Camry with a tough steering wheel and can drive pretty much anything. Will go with you to the mechanic so you don’t get scammed. Absolutely drives at least 10 over the speed limit and is only urged on by his driving playlist full of super fast songs. King of the California stop.

Tristan: 8/10. Good driver. Passed his test on the first try, always comes to a complete stop. Needs the seat out almost all the way. Pleasant radio music and windows open, can have a conversation with you when he drives. But will get stressed in heavy traffic and mostly likely will snap at you. You probably have to ask him for permission to eat in his car.

Tea: 7/10. Also a solid driver, always stays within the speed limit and doesn’t get stressed too easily. The only exception is rich assholes in fancy cars who weave in and out of lanes really quick; she WILL race them in her 8 year old Honda thats due for maintenance soon while cussing them out the whole time, not caring who’s in the car with her. Can drive well but ideally is playing passenger to Tristan. She and Joey trade off the front seat and Yugi’s forever in the back.

Seto: -2/10. The rich asshole in a blue eyes white Tesla, weaving in and out of lanes and laughing as the plebs try to keep up. Mokuba is nauseous but egging him on. He treats all speed limits and most stoplights and yield and stop signs as vague suggestions at the very best and parks in fire lanes because the fine is pocket change to him. No food in his car. Only Mokuba is allowed to sit in the passenger seat and others are lucky if he lets them sit in the back. Every time he drives somewhere he expects valet parking because finding a spot is too mundane for him (again, he will just otherwise leave the car wherever even if it’s a fire lane). No one has better job security that his chauffeur because Mokuba pays to make sure Seto only drives rarely.

Mokuba: can’t drive yet, never wants to learn because he has a chauffeur, plus his only role model for driving who’s not a professional driver is Seto, so he’s kind of scared of it.

Bonus! Atem: 3/10. Better (and taller) than Yugi because he has a calmer and more authoritative presence that makes people feel like he knows what he’s doing, but only knows the rules of the road because Yugi drilled them into him. He’s a pharaoh, both the modern technology and being his own charioteer are fundamentally incompatible with his being and he always feels like something is wrong when he drives.

That was until it seemed you flinched whenever dip of water would get close to your face or how uncomfortable you looked whenever someone asked you how if you ever go a day without wearing makeup or how look like without it

Hanakos very observant and since you’re very special to him, he’s especially observant of you. He knows that if he just asks you upfront the. You most likely won’t tell him so he decides on complimenting you even more than he already does

So when you confess the truth on how you’re insecure and you used to get bullied, he’s very upset and reassures you that he’ll love you no matter what and gives you a kiss to reassure you even more

So when you go to school bare faced the next day, you go to school very early to greet Hanako, you open the door expecting the worst but Hanako just warmly smiles at you and compliments you like every other day

Hanako doesn’t really get why you ere so insecure when you look so perfect to him and he’s even more excited to see you after school than normal, but when you walk in all disheveled and bruises prominent on your arms, he becomes worried

When he finds out it was bullies who did this, he reassures you again and manages to convince Kou and Yashiro the next day to help get rid of those bullies, and while that’s being processed, he’ll have to deal with those bullies on his own a little

Tsukasa Yugi

He really did think that your makeup was done so nicely and would compliment you all the time and would even ask you if you can play around with it on him

Tsukasa isn’t stupid just childish, he notices how you freezed up and looked nervous when he brought up you never go a day without makeup and how pretty you look

He asks you in private why you wear so much makeup all the time, he’s not shaming you though, just curious. He looks so curious and it seems like such an innocent question that you tell him—and even if you didn’t tell him, he’ll just pester you until you do

When you tell him why, he’s so shocked that some people really had the audacity to bully someone as perfect as you

You can’t help but feel more secure when he seems so genuinely shocked that someone would do that to you that the next you build up the confidence to not wear makeup.

The next day when he sees you with no makeup near the broadcasting room he immediately hugs you and kisses your face while complimenting you in between every kiss

It just astonishes him more how some people would really bully you and how you could hide such a perfect face from him

At the end of the day he’s already waiting to meet you in a empty hallway so you both could together to the broadcasting room, so when sees you already there sobbing with messy hair and dirty clothes

He hugs and coddles you immediately while kicking and kissing away your tears and telling you that it’s okay and complementing you still

Tsukasa promises to himself that he’ll deal with those bullies accordingly tomorrow
