Earth, Wind, and Coffee: Chapter Three Analysis

chapter one analysis | chapter two analysis

back again for another chapter analysis. i think ive been looking forward to this chapter the most, it’s where some big decisions were made!!! this analysis is a long one, i hope that’s all right! i kinda got carried away. so, let’s dive right in, shall we?

some fun stuff before we start!

chapter three was supposed to be the last chapter of the fic

idk if any of you were there when i first started writing this fic, but it was only going to be three chapters with a possible epilogue. however, everything changed when i finished the end of chapter two. (lil atla reference there for ya) (sorry i know that was bad, moving on). like i said in my last analysis, i had an idea of what i wanted to happen (the separation of korrasami) so that they could come back together. it was just a matter of what separates them. so, i’m not sure where i got the panic attack idea but once i did, the rest of the story changed. i realized i couldn’t quite possibly finish the story in one chapter so i split the ideas i had and decided on it being four chapters

now, this being said, maaaaajor changes were made in my story outline. most notably: korrasami was going to be a couple in this chapter

this was originally going to be a full fledged “they meet, they get to know each other, they fall in love, happily every after” but the thing was, i planned on treating their romance as korra’s recovery; that being with asami is what made korra better, that all she needed was a partner, someone to love, and that is not what i wanted to portray with this story. i’ve never been a fan of stories that give a character a love interest and all of sudden their problems are fixed and they’re completely happy, and here i was about to do just that. i knew i’d never respect myself if i continued down this narrative, and when chapter two ended with korra’s panic attack, i realized her growth needed better love and attention. so, i changed what happened and gave her some therapy

this change in the storyline also let me explore more of kuvopal !!! (is that their ship name?)

so, back to LOVE WITCH for a second (because that glorious fic really did steal my heart) not only did it make me love kuvira’s character more, it also got me into the kuvopal relationship! and yet again, i wanted my own go at it. with the original timeline, there was just no space for me to include the lil bread crumbs of their relationship. however, however, however; by splitting the ending between two chapters (and adding some stuff in between) i was able to lay some foundation for them, which im very happy about :)

into the chapter we go:

let’s talk about the meeting! the whole reason this fic came to be! i’ll start by saying i always knew the project was going to get pulled out from under asami. 1) because thats some angsty/hurt shit right there and im a sucker for writing angst 2) i didn’t feel like creating a whole ass presentation because knowing my ass i would’ve made a powerpoint about it so i had every detail down to the font asami used and 3) getting the presentation taken away from asami was a pivotal point in her character arc.

i actually started the chapter in two different ways. at first, i’d written her whole entire morning with there always being one thing that was off. like, instead of a perfect omelette, it was going to split and asami would’ve had a scramble, still good, but not her favorite. instead of going through all green lights on her way to work, asami was gonna meet every. single. red. light. i would’ve gone through with this if it hadn’t felt strange; i wanted to give the impression that something bad was going to happen but i felt like having something go wrong with every thing in her morning was gonna be a dead give away that some even bigger big bad was about to happen, if that makes sense. so instead, i went with the picture perfect scenario, almost too perfect, if you ask me. and indeed, it was too perfect, because hiroshi was too much of a coward to tell his daughter any sooner that his board agreed to get a new presenter

im just gonna cite a bunch of my favorite lines/bits from this chapter because i really enjoyed writing it xD

Iroh has already begun but Asami hears no words, only a blaring ring in her ears. Her face feels hot and she wonders how red she is. She stares at the black binder, notes the natural grooves and curves of the material, the plastic covering over top of it, the metal spine peaking out at the bottom. She’s only brought out of it’s dark trance when she feels a hand be placed on her arm; Kuvira.

when you’re upset, do you ever just, hyper focus on one thing and its like you’re analyzing it under a microscope for the first time? yes? no? well, i do that, and personally, i do because if i focus on my anger/hurt emotions any more, im going to explode and i dont want to explode. so, this instance about looking at the grooves in the binder and each of the components of it just hits with me, idk if does with you too, but like bruuh.

Asami has her hand over her mouth, silently sobbing, feeling as if she’ll throw up. She leans her head on her wheel, her mind wanders to what could’ve been, what should’ve been. She feels as if her car is closing in on her, that the metal is compacting. The seatbelt keeps her locked down to the driver’s seat and she can’t leave if she wants to. The Satomobile holds her hostage and she lets it. Even while it’s hurting her, even while it’s harshly molding itself onto her, she stays at her father’s heel because, what else is she to do?

this is one of my favorite things ive ever done with asami’s character, is using future industries/satomobiles as a sort of vehicle (heh) for her relationship with her dad. this paragraph just kind of hurts, but the good hurt? but also not good hurt? it’s just, (and not me over here boasting about my writing or anything) it’s so poetic that she has this breakdown and she’s so upset with her dad, i mean “what should��ve been” like, asami KNOWS that the shit that’s just happened is more than wrong, yet asami is still somehow wondering how she can please her dad and it’s in the literal legacy hiroshi built for himself. “she stays at her father’s heel because, what else is she to do?” i remember writing that and being like “shit, am i really gonna do this? yeah” ugh, i could go on forever about how i love this section, but i’ll stop here for now.

Asami begins yelling, screaming at the top of her lungs, letting all the thoughts, all the insecurities her father gave her finally be released into the world. Kuvira lets her, simply nodding and following along on the couch while Asami paces her living room. She spews out word after word, about the work, about the presentation, about Iroh, his position, her position, the company, the CEO, and she only stops when she feels the weight of her father rest on her shoulders.

back with more diction; i really love this paragraph because of how we circle back to hiroshi. note how i first say “the CEO” and then a few words later say “her father” because, in a way, this is asami’s confession that hiroshi is CEO first and father second, if i haven’t already explicitly said so. it’s so heart wrenching and sad but my favorite thing about it is this isn’t even about korra. like THIS right here is a prime example about how i realized this fic became more than just a love story. in the planning stages of this fic, asami was going to go through getting the presentation taken away from her, but what was she going to focus more on? the fact that korra wasn’t around anymore. and yes, asami still does think about korra after this, but so much more happens for her. asami gets to know kuvira more, asami gets to know her lab partners more, (and my personal hc is that they’ve all been lab partners for two years and only NOW asami is getting to be friends with them in their senior year, but hey, better late than never!) and to me, what’s even better, is that a bunch of realizations come to asami w/o korra being there. asami is growing and the idea of being able to grow without needing to have a partner in order to grow is so important to me, not only for the fact that growth should be endless and something you do all the time for yourself, but asami literally wants to share it with korra. not boast about changing and growing and becoming better, but just be better with korra. sdlfakds i swear, im fangirling over my own writing, oops

okay, moving on from The Meeting and onto the rest of the chapter

this dock scene was also another part i wrote beforehand and it had a completely different ending in that asami was going to ask korra out on a date. of course, korra would’ve said yes, and then yay yay happy ending. this didn’t happen and i’m glad it didn’t. in one version of this dock scene, asami was actually going to be upset with korra for disappearing, and even worse, mad that korra wasn’t there to comfort her after the presentation. oof, i know. so so glad i didn’t continue down that line, cause it is toxic, and my girls aren’t like that at all.

Once Korra’s eyes meet hers, Asami says, “That doesn’t mean you always have to be on your own.” She smiles at Korra, at the girl who’s turned her world upside down. Her hand remains on Korra’s cheek and she feels the girl sink into her palm. “I’ll be here for you, and it seems like Tenzin will be too, what with saying he was calling you more. And you have his family, and your own family, even though they’re away, they’re here to support you, we all are. You can still be strong and turn to other people for help. It takes great strength to ask for help and I know for a fact you’re strong enough, those bags of coffee beans were nothing for you.”

i like this line of dialogue here for a few reasons, mostly because asami is so soft and so right and the joke at the really helped lighten the mood but didn’t take away from what she’d just said before. i don’t have too much else about the Reunions section, though if you guys have any questions or anything you wanna point out, please do so! i think what i will say is that i tried to be as real and gentle with korra’s progression. i was so nitpicky about everything i wrote because i didn’t want to get any of it wrong or over dramatized or fake. recovery from anything is so important and it takes time and it’s not a straight line so i hope i did a good job with it the rest of the fic.

moving on, i love the found family trope and this leads me into the next section, New Friends

when i think about this section, i like how soft it is, and i really enjoy the ending bits: korra recounting memories from the south, asami meeting tenzin. i think what i like about the end of this chapter is that, it kind of leaves the question: what’s next?

asami has grown, she’s changed, she sees the errors of her father’s ways but she’s not excusing them. korra has grown, she’s changing, she’s taken the first step in recovery. now it’s just a matter of, what happens with this growth now. and i really loved how i wrapped up the fic in the next and last chapter, so i hope you enjoy it too :))

honorable mentions:

there were a lot of changes in this chapter and one of them got changed twice! korra was gonna get a therapist but then i was like, we gotta get the krew together, and then i was like supppppoorttttt grouuuppppp, because lets be honest, all the krew has stuff they need to work through, and i know therapy isn’t for everyone, but mental health is so vital and important. asami is an advocate for therapy in the chapter but there are also other means to take care of yourself and your mental health and while i’ve never been to a support group, i understand finding comfort in knowing you’re not alone.

i guess what i’m trying to say is please take care of yourself and dont be afraid to lean on others. i know not everyone has the means to get a therapist/psychiatrist and i know that your friends aren’t made to only be your therapist. buuuut, don’t be afraid to reach out, there’s nothing wrong with needing help and support :)

anything i would’ve wanted to change?

honestly, i think the only thing i would’ve wanted to change was mako’s speech during the support group meeting. for me, it was a lil bit too poetically out of character. not to say i want to change the content, but rather the manner in which it’s presented. other than that though, i really loved writing this chapter :)

so this analysis was reeeaaaalllly long, i understand if not everyone made it to end. anyways, thanks so much for reading this analysis and the fic! once again, i’m very much open to questions and any comments, i love them very much! i’ll see you guys in the next analysis of the final chapter :)

Jealousy

Pairings: KamilahxMC

Jealousy wasn't something she felt comfortable with nor a feeling she liked. It always made her feel insecure and uneasy about herself.

But there she was once again. She was put for another time in this position where she has to face one of Kamilah's ex lovers.

Her name was Aiko, a member of The Five the most powerful vampires who control Japan. Her hair was in a ponytail and her dark blue suit looked perfect on her, perfect for Kamilah.

As Takeshi and Jax had an argument with the Five always interrupting them, Amy noticed Aiko stealing glances at Kamilah who looked tensed yet amused?

"Call me crazy but..do you feel a vibe between these two?" Lily whispered close to Amy who hated her best friend right now.

"Shhhh" it was the only thing that she could say without showing anyone that she wishes she never witness this moment.

"We cant let them come here!" Aiko's harsh voice echoed through the room

Kamilah fought down a sarcastic laugh "Cut it Aiko, you are only bitter because i left you"

Amy's eyes went wide when Kamilah finally confirmed they were a thing. She only remember a scene from her vision, one that haunted her dreams.

All her anger took over, her blood was boiling. Adrian asked everyone to be in their best behaviour but she was so jealous that every part of her body yelled at her to interrupt

Squaring up her shoulders she took a step forward "Hey!! You can't talk to any of my friends this way, i listen to you going off for at least five minutes now and its so irritating"

Everyone stopped to stare at her. Kamilah looked at her angrily for even thinking to make that step.

"You imbecile.." Aiko started to talk but she never finished

"Oh please! You are just angry that Kamilah saw nothing on you and left you for someone better" she now flipped her hair smirking

Aiko took a dangerous step forward to Amy. Kamilah tried to approach but a guard held her back.

"And who the hell are you?" her eyes were now red, her expression annoyed

"Oh Kami didn't break the news to you? We are together"

As Amy and Aiko were literally arguing Lily leaned in closer to Kamilah and whisper

"Are you guys official?"

"I guess we are" she said shrugging

"Girl i shipped it since beginning" Lily said excitedly

Kamilah turn to look at her with confusion in her eyes "Shipped it? What the ships have to do with our relationship?"

Lily held her laugh "Remind me to introduce you to the modern slang"

"I dont care if you are one of the Five i will kill you mys--"

"A threat!! She threatened me!! Guards!" Aiko commanded as they pushed her back

"You little--"

"Enough!! If Kano accept her they will stay, but if not i dont want to see any of your faces again" Zhang said angrily

Everyone followed Takeshi to his penthouse. When they got in the first thing Amy did was lock herself in the bathroom, her anger was not wearing off. Lily signed following behind

"Ames its me open up" she said knocking at the door

"Leave me alone" Amy said from the opposite side

"Girl i can break down this door if i want to!"

And with that Amy cracked it open, fresh tears running down her cheeks

"Shhh, i am here okay?" Lily said hugging her tight

"I just dont understand Lily, the universe seems to hate me" her expression was sad, regretting.

"And Kamilah will now think i am an immature child yelling at the people who we need"

Lily sat back and listened to her friend going off about how Kamilah will now hate her

"Amy" for the first time Lily gave her a serious look

"Kamilah doesn't hate you, she will never hate you, have you seen the way she looks at you? She is in love"

Amy laughed sarcastically "Yea right, the sexual tension between her and Aiko was so thick a knife could cut it through"

"You are unbelievable when you are jealous" they both laughed but Amy's was bitter

"I think you two should talk things out, see where you stand"

She knew her friend was right, but she was terrified to talk to Kamilah right now, what if she is angry at her?

Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door "Sorry to interrupt but..Can i have a moment with you alone?" Kamilah appeared at the door, concern written all over her eyes

"Aaaaaand thats my cue to leave" Lily hugged her before she let them alone.

Kamilah didn't knew how to act. She knew Amy was blind with jealousy and threaten Aiko but on the other hand that could have ended bad for all of them.

Amy looked up at Kamilah who leaned uncomfortably against the door entrance looking down at her like she was a lost puppy

"Dont look at me like that" she said pushing her way out the bathroom, all the anger building inside her once again. She couldn't stop thinking about how many lovers of hers she will meet over the centuries they will spend together.

Kamilah followed her out of the building where she started walking towards a park.

It was beautiful. The trees were pink, the stars shined brightly above them.

Amy stopped on a bridge, looking down at the calm waters running bellow her, the nightblooming flowers around her.

But then she saw Kamilah approaching, and she knew a tsunami was close to start and drown everything they ever build

"Stop avoiding me" Kamilah said standing next to her, her eyes fixed on the horizon

Amy signed, she knew she was right, she shouldn't run away. She would probably think she was reckless as she was when she was a human, so she cursed herself understand her breath.

"Hey look at me" Kamilah was now desperate, worried "please tell me what's going on"

Amy's eyes were wet. All the emotions made her suffocate

"Its just constant insecurity and pain Kamilah" she said after a shaky breath

"First it was Gaius, that evil son of a bitch who spent millennia with you and loved you, I died to save you all only for him to return back?"

Kamilah watched as the girl Infront her was torn apart by all of the past events.

"And Serafine? She is so magnetic and beautiful that i want to punch her for being so pretty" she laughed bitterly "she is everything anyone would want"

Her voice now broke, all the jealousy was poured into these words

"And of course now its Aiko, a sexy stunning CEO that is powerful and fearless, why would you ever look at me after that? I am the opposite"

Amy shrugged wrapping her hands around herself. Kamilah placed her soft hands on her cheeks forcing her to meet her gaze

"Oh Amy you are so wrong" she laughed sweetly

"I might had a fling of two--"

Amy cleared her throat

"Okay i might had flings over the centuries but that happens when you live over 2000 years, life gets boring, dull"

Amy signed, it was common logic. Kamilah's hands started to slowly tremble. All the pain of the night that Amy died in her arms replayed over and over again in her head

"But then i met you, and everything changed. You showed me for the first encounter that you dont let anything get pass you. Then of course you were immature but you are only so young, so many things to learn"

Amy rolled her eyes, a faint smile drawing at her lips

"But you fought at our side no matter the cost, no matter the risk. I will never forget the time you died in my arms, saving me i.."

Her throat felt dry, her words got stuck. Amy noticed Kamilah's wet eyes so she took her hands in hers, allowing her to finish

"I told you you were the most wonderful woman i ever met, so brave, so fearless"

Taking a deep breath she said those words. Those words that made Amy smile so wide her jaw was hurting

"And i love you Amy, more than anything"

Overwhelmed she jumped in her hug kissing her passionately. Her chest felt relieved, her heart was beating so fast, as her mind felt like fireworks erupted inside of her. The happiness was unreal

"I love you Kamilah, you cant imagine how much"

They both smiled, kissing freely under the moonlight, letting all the pain and agony melt away, it was just the two of them knowing if they are together, nothing can ever stop them.

The demon brothers as a kpop group (+ Diavolo)

Hey there! This is my very first headcanon thingy, so i would like to apologise for my bad english, its not my mother language. Also, it was so long ago when i last wrote anything similar in english, so once again, sorry.

Anyway, i really wanted to write it, so let me know if you like it! + If you want general group headcanons with them as a kpop group, pls let me know it as well! (Or a similar one with Simeon, Luke and Solomon, hehe) Love!

The demon brothers as a kpop group (+Diavolo)

DIAVOLO - The CEO of the company - It was the main goal in all his life to see Lucifer shining on stage - Okay, not, actually he only knows Lucifer since a shitty survival program - I mean, Lucifer is already hiper super extra giga mega beautiful in his eyes, but! Lucifer! on! stage! is the main Lucifer - So he maid a company for him - Lucifer was like 'wtf dID U DO' (okay, he didnt say it in this way, but-) - He is an understanding boss - Doesnt plan to debut any other group, so his company wont suck lol - Has all the money only for the bois - Altho he is really kind and understanding, he expects the guys to work extra hard do achive success - Sometimes goes to variety shows with his group and acting like a proud dad around them - Fans say that he is the 8th member of the group - Has his own fansites - Sometimes does modelling (has a duo photoshoot with Lucifer which he is extra proud of and some of its pieces are on his wall in a big canvas) - Fans ship him with Lucifer (not suprising) - He bought two houses next to each other. One is his and the other is the guys'. - Has a cameo in one of the mvs of the group - Does acting, has a lots of main roles - He is POPULAR

LUCIFER - Leader of the group - Also dad of the group (i mean if you dont count Diavolo) - He and the others participated in a survival program, but didnt make it - Got kicked out of their prev company - Thats when Diavolo became a fan of him and decided on founding one for him - Lucifer only agreed on joining if his teammeat could go too - Most popular in the group - Does everything Diavolo asks him to do - Makes the guys practicing till morning - Barely sleeps - Also does acting - Really bad at doing fanservice - Extremely caring towards fans - Always makes sure that the fans are doing okay, writes short messages on fancafe, uploads pictures (never about himself) on ig and twitter and reminds fans to take care of themselfs - Staying up super late to read fancafe letters from fans - Gives special attention to communicate with fans - However... He shamlessly blocks fans who upload meme pics about him or hurt his pride - HE IS SERIOUS - Thanks to this, fans never EVER mock him - Has a solo album - Won against his own group once in a music show (Levi said how it was not fair and Satan was pissed) - Never dyed his hair and never will - According to some poll, he is one of the most handsome men in kpop - He hates fanwars and when there is one, he tells the fans to stop - He also hates rumors

MAMMON - He wanted to became a worldwide idol so he can get more money - Actually he was really bad at everything when he joined that survival program - Fans started to love him bc of his hard work (((for the money))) - Always forgets their own choreography - The whole fandom jokes about how stupid he is - He is always truly offended and scolds the fans on vlive - Fans make memes out of him and love dissing him - Fans think he is super cute and he is loveing it - LOVES fansigns but always blushes if he needs to hold hands with fans - Tries to act tough anyway - Cries in every. fkin. concert. (giving birth to new memes lol) - Once made a "joke" about how fans should donate him money instead of giving presents and it became a HUGE scandal, Lucifer and Diavolo deadass wanted to kick him out of the group - Does vlive a lot bc he loves talking about everything: how he bought a new car, new shoes, how he wanted to prank Lucifer with Satan and how they failed blah blah and so on - He is that member with zero lines, but has fair screentime - Modelling and super popular - Tried acting bc "he is too good at everything" but failed (he is not too good, but too shy lol) - The loudest member - Variety shows love him thanks to his idiotism - He says he is the "cutie sexy" member of the team - Once a fan started crying in front of him at a fansign out of happiness and Mammon was so touched he started crying as well

LEVIATHAN - His nickname is Leviachan for a reason - Fans know how much of an otaku he is so they always buy him anime related stuff and LEVI IS TRULY HAPPY ALL THE TIME - He even post about his presents at twitter and ig - Does gameplay vlives - Also has a youtube channel where he uploads every kind of videos: gameplays, gameplays, anime reviews, manga recommendations, gameplays, videos about his Ruri-chan collection, gamplays... and more gameplays - Uploaded a video where he and Mammon tried to snake into Lucifer's room to film him while he is asleep, but got caught and Lucifer started to shout at them - He needed to deletet it bc Lucifer wanted to kill him for publishing it - Fans didnt reupload out of fear from Lucifer - Shy at fansigns but compfy with old fans and fansites - Doing cosplay - At the begining he was reather shy on stage, but since he got used to it... aegyo all the way - Loves when they promote in Japan - In variety shows when the mcs ask him about his hobbies he always ends up talking too much, so to others need to stop him - According to fans, he has e-boy vibes - He is the one who posts everything thats happening with them on twitter, so the fans really ALWAYS know whats up whit the guys - Once accidentally tweeted out their hotel room numbers and fans found them (Lucifer was hella angry)

SATAN - Mom of the group, even if he hates it - Like if Lucifer is the dad, no way that he is the mom - Also prince of the group - Has good vocals but can rap too - Writes lyrics - Started acting bc he was sure he is better than Lucifer - Won an award for his main role in a detective series - Has a whole collection of books bought by fans - Gets angry easily which is the reason why fans often mock and make memes about him - Reads the messages fans send him and replies; sometimes its only a heart, sometims its advice or kind words - Came up with the groups greeting - According to the other members fansites, he is so handsome that its hard to not take pictures of him - Thanks to this, all the others fansites have at least two posts about him - Fans going insane when he starts smiling - Plays the guitar - Multilanguage king - Cant do fanservice - Literally hates fanservice - Once in Weekly Idol, him and Lucifer needed to hold hands and say nice things to each other after the others told the mcs how awkward their relationship is - That was the worst moment in his entire life - Wanna do a solo album, but didnt have the chance yet (Diavolo promisd him tho) - He has th best fashion sense after Asmo - Has a cat in the dorm and the fans love it like its their own - He has a great memory, so he remembers the names of the fans who attended their fansigns at least two times

ASMODEUS - Main vocal of the group - Self claimed visual of the group - He posts the most, almost everyday - Loves doing make up - The most fashionable member - A big ass diva - Went to king of masked singer but didnt win it - Has a solo album - He loVES FANSERVICE, HE LIVES FOR IT - With members, with fans, it doesnt really matter - The best at fansigns, he is so direct - Hold hands with fans, gives hugs, let them touch him - On the groups YouTube channel, he has this special segment called "Asmo cam" - He shows whats happening in backstage during promotions - Designed their debut album's look - Also designed the lightstick - Complains to the stylists if he dislikes an outfit - MCing - Reads the fanfictions fans write about the group and teases the members with it - Doing shower vlives, where there is only voice, so the fans can hear him singing in the shower (he also brags about how beautiful he is and how unlucky his fans not seeing the full beauty of his body) - If a fan post about him saying dirty things, he will reply with even more dirtyer stuff - Most of his fans are hard stans

How about the entirety of Medusa and Crossfire? On both occasions this bitch spent most of the episode scheming up her secret plan without letting anyone in on it (bc who would trust a luthor am i right?).

Especially by the time of Medusa she had worked together with Supergirl already yet she let her believe she activated the nukes and was helping her mother only to be able to face her mother with the smugest face in existence when her plan worked out aoierhfoasd

Also yes she initially dropped the alien detection device I know but her reason for putting them on the market wasnt some “ugh I hate aliens” sentiment she literally said people are gonna spend money on them and thats what matters most. She is a cutthroat business woman CEO. I would bet that the amount of Slytherins in CEO positions is high as hell compared to other houses.

Lena has always used her schemes and plans for good but that doesnt mean she isnt constantly plotting which is a key characteristic for Slytherins.

She also shows so much ambition! one of the youngest CEOs and having studied and graduated with degrees in science from a young age. She is constantly working hard to show her accomplishments and prove that she is more than the Luthor name.

Love my ambitious, scheming Slytherin kiddo yes I do and Slytherin =/= destined to be evil. So it doesnt mean I think Lena is evil or will become evil in the future. She is a good person

rambling about shin men and hyu/kan. its long and self indulgent but if ur curious where my brains been at recently here it is

ive been in an out of a couple fandom interests recently, im still following new shin chan episodes closely (and i’ll get back to subbing some eps probably, at some point)...

anyway the past couple weeks i got, weirdly, super into hyu and kan as a ship. even though theres not a TON of content to work off, and also theyre ostensibly a het ship which can turn me off (and did at first, when i first realized kan is a ~secret girl~, in fact i have my reaction in writing

but then i gave shin men more of a chance and rly grew to appreciate all of the characters and.. the thing as a concept, and BOY!! i love kan a lot, like a heck of a lot. and since shes a girl who deliberately takes on a lot of masculine attributes its very easy to read her as genderqueer or transmasculine or even a trans dude straight up - though as a demi...gender?? person myself i like reading her as Soft Transmasc, because projecting onto cute little cartoon ppl is my favorite thing to do

so one of my main questions when i encountered this series was: who came up with this and why? what IS shin-men? this post will be me trying to explain it to myself:

shin-men was a concurrently-running anime AND manga series created in 2010 to celebrate the 20th year anniversary of shin-chan. the anime is obviously more well known, but the manga chapters tell the stories quite a bit differently and provide some more backstory - i own the first two volumes with the third on the way. the anime is awesome because it was seemingly spearheaded by Masaaki Yuasa (the kaiba dude), and as soon as I saw the first episode i assumed Shin-Men was his brainchild from start to finish. i’m not sure EXACTLY how much was his creation, conceptually speaking, but it is true that he finalized designs and a lot of basic concepts for the characters. (parabon is straight up hyo hyo!)

(from masaaki yuasa’s super huge sketchbook, which runs in the 40-50 dollar range. let me know if you find it cheaper anywhere ill accept a used copy with heavy spaghetti stains)

yuasa boarded the first five episodes of shin-men, and a subsequent 8 episodes were released with different boarders (primarily yuji mutou, who’s been a heavy hitter on shin-chan since 1998). yuasa’s 5 episodes are beautiful - i mean look at this

yuasa always brings an otherworldly, dreamlike quality to whatever story he’s telling. on shin chan he generally seemed to prefer fun AUs and outlandish stories about buriburi zaemon that would allow him to invent colorful new settings and costumes.

that’s what’s so refreshing about shin-men - it’s the first time the show completely abandons its core cast of characters and focuses on NEW ones, in a universe with different rules. except, just kidding, because shinnosuke is still the main character, he’s just red now and called gou. so even while shin-men is TECHNICALLY breaking the fundamental rule of shin-chan - that shin is the main character who is in every single episode no matter what - it’s still abiding by it, and it still feels like shin-chan. that’s not criticism, though - i like the various alt-universe appearances of shin-chan characters in the shin-men universe. my favorite is matsuzaka, who is called “matsuzakaroni”, is STILL a kindergarten teacher even in this very alien universe (and despite the fact that she, i think, hates it?), and most uncannily of all, gets hit on by gou?? also gou is an adult i think, in this universe’s rules, he’s just really short like all of the other shin-men who are also adults?? i mean, i THINK? why does nobody in universe ever seem to mention how tiny these apparent grown-ups ar

anyway i’m not an expert on shin-men. despite my efforts i don’t really understand exactly where it came from or where gou’s ears are

i hope some day someone will create really good english subs of it, though i realize that’ll be a serious effort since yuasa’s episodes ABOUND with onscreen text - fuck, just imagine editing the moving gossip clouds on botswanawana to have english text. how would you even do that.

but i do wanna talk about kan a little and why shes cool thats the topic of this post

kan akaluislar (thats her last name..) is one of the 5 shin-men, superheroes with elemental powers who all look like a 5 year old named shinnosuke nohara from another universe, but don’t think too much about that. kan’s the only one who doesn’t actually have a superpower - she’s the Iron Man of the group, like, literally she’s tony stark, she’s the super wealthy and successful president of a major automobile company and rules the school in her home country, Detahoit. (which is maybe a pun on detroit? i’m not sure what’s up with that name)

anyway in addition to being iron man she’s also Transformers and Fullmetal Alchemist, she’s all three of those guys. she turns into a car a lot and transports her teammates everywhere. she also OWNS a car and drives it around when she’s not being a secret car superhero. is that bitterly tragic, or does kan secretly PREFER to be the car? is that her darkest fantasy? to be a full time car instead of a car-driving ceo? that is my headcanon

kan guards the fact that she’s female from the group, convinced they’d treat her differently. specifically, she’s convinced gou and nyoki would hit on her (confirmed), sui would bitch her out for not having a proper skin care regimen (that’s sui’s big thing, by the way, is that he’s a bitchy youtube beauty vlogger), and - worst of all - hyu would kick her out, since girls can’t fight.

...which seems like a pessimistic view of hyu. hyu is the wind elemental in the group - he’s buff and a little dopey but kind hearted and sweet, the noble hero type. also a bit of a spoiled prince.

each member of shin-men gets a yuasa episode dedicated to them, and hyu’s episode - his main arc, really - centers on his love for kan, which he keeps secret, despite the powerful curiosity of his country’s gossipy citizens.

what interests me is the disparate ways the anime and manga handle this plot thread. the anime treats hyu’s crush very earnestly, maintaining an undercurrent of quiet affection from him that appears in the majority of its episodes. the manga, however, emphasizes kan’s disinterest in romantic advances from both gou AND hyu, then practically drops the topic of hyu’s crush. it doesn’t exactly defy or contradict the relationship they have in the anime, however -- but it makes me sad, because hyu’s crush on kan is extremely cute and endearing. (as a sidenote, gou’s thing for kan is also pretty cute, but it only exists in the manga, and, well - it’s not really a /romantic/ crush.

the shin-men manga makes a lot of different choices to the anime, and since the two were released concurrently i have no idea which “version” of any one story was the “original” - and in some cases i’m sure there isn’t an “original” version of a story, just two different ones. sometimes i really prefer the anime’s decisions (not drawing eyelashes on kan) and other times i’m... not sure what to think (the manga chapter with pimawari does NOT focus on kan, so did the anime decide to highlight kan’s relationship with pimawari because... kan’s a girl?? did they really do that? am i over thinking this?)

the manga does a GREAT job of fleshing out kan, though, even though it does so by torturing her, endlessly. she gets trapped inside of a washing machine. then has to use up all her fuel exploding out of the washing machine. the good news is, kan can repair washing machines, we learn this in episode 5 of the anime.

but be it manga OR anime, kan and hyu frequently wind up as partners who work well together, and its understandable. kan and hyu have private lives that mirror each other, both of them being high-profile and wealthy, pressured (kan by her conniving older sisters, hyu by his palace’s grand chamberlain) to settle down when neither of them is particularly interested, both preferring the life of a superhero. their private lives seem lonely and neither of them has any friends outside of shin-men. but within shin-men they team up frequently, and (being natural leaders) the two of them tend to take charge and stand out as The Responsible Ones.

(pointing = leadership)

this is what sells me on them as a couple - that they have this core of collaboration and mutual care in their superhero lives, which could build into a supportive friendship in their personal lives.

i very much love that hyu has a crush on kan despite thinking kan is a guy. that angle never comes up in the anime, though its lightly touched in the manga - and yuasa explicitly addresses it in his earliest notes. to quote,

“kan (iron shinnosuke) is the only girl within shin-men. since only men can be shin-men, she wears an iron suit to conceal the fact that she's female from everyone. and since she doesn't have a superpower, she relies on the power of her suit. hyu (wind shinnosuke) secretly likes kan but keeps thinking things like "could it be that i actually swing that way.." (lol). eventually, he's the only one who knows about her true self, but hides it from everyone so it won't be known.”

so, kan’s expectation of how hyu would react, having a sexist freakout and banning her from battle? apparently not representative of reality. which is good news because, even if kan doesnt want a love connection, she DESPERATELY needs a friend whom she doesnt feel the need to hide her private life from.

and at th end of the day thats what makes me happy: the idea that hyu can be this friend to kan, and they just chill out together, smoke a bong, get their truant son gou to cook them some curry, consolidate oil and wind technology to make both of their countries more sustainable and energy efficient, kiss etc.

im so curious if vol3 of the manga will give me any further insight.. i doubt it but im excited anyway

Here you are Nonny! Vishnal/Arthur is not a ship I've ever written for, but I'll be damned if it wasn't fun. it's too much fun to play with Vishnal's obvious uh... attraction to authority figures.

I went back and forth a few times on whether I wanted this to be a Modern Office AU or an in-game canon AU where Vishnal gets assigned as Arthur's personal butler.

but I had a little more fun writing the Office AU, so here it is. Lowly employee Vishnal and New Boss Arthur, complete with teasing coworkers.

Ficlet AU Prompts

“Heads up, new boss alert.” Vishnal’s heart gave an unpleasant lurch as his head shot up from the spreadsheet he had been working on to crane over the sea of cubicles. Leon’s warning had been spot-on. There was a small group of important looking people all gathered around what used to be Mr. Volkanon’s office. The office had been cleared out of any of their former manager’s personal effects after his retirement party last Friday, and it looked like someone new was moving in this morning.

Vishnal skimmed the small crowd, wondering who among the besuited bodies was going to be their next manager. Almost all of them were older, at least in their fifties, but there was one younger man amongst them, blond, bespectacled, holding himself rigid and looking nervous with an armful of folders. Vishnal had to sympathize, he hated being the intern lackey dragged along with the higher-ups.

The thought crossed his mind that he should probably get back to work, but he realized he wasn’t the only one in the office scoping out the crowd for their new boss. Actually, the only one among them who appeared to still be diligently working was his other cubicle-mate, Clorica, who had dozed off while staring at her computer screen. Vishnal nudged her awake.

Clorica woke with a small gasp, automatically wiggling her mouse and putting her fingers on the keyboard and typing in a few nonsense characters, proclaiming in a rushed whisper, “I’m working, I’m awake. Wait…” She looked at Vishnal and Leon who was doing his best to hide as a breathy cough. “What’s going on?”

“New boss is in. didn’t think you’d want to miss it.”

“Oh.” Clorica joined the rest of the office in watching the group at the front.

The group was breaking up, several handshakes were exchanged, before one by one they all walked out of the office, leaving a familiar woman and the young intern behind.

Ms. Ventuswill was the general manager of their work group, Mr. Volkanon’s boss. Vishnal frowned slightly, she wasn’t taking over as their manager, was she? That seemed like a demotion for her.

She stepped forward, clearing her throat before saying in her normal, commanding voice, “May I have your attention please?” It was a needless request, she had everyone’s attention already, but she did stop the murmurs that were bubbling up across the office. Ms. Ventuswill smiled at the silence office. “I’ll make this quick, I’m sure you have plenty of work to do today and don’t need any further distractions. I would like to introduce you to your new manager, Mister Arthur Lawrence.”

The young blond man stepped forward and shifted his hold on his folders to offer the office a small wave. “Hello’s, I am really looking forward to working with all of you.” He was much softer spoken than his predecessor. Mr. Volkanon’s booming voice could be heart two floor away if he got into a particular mood. Still, Mr. Lawrence’s voice carried quite clearly all the way to Vishnal’s ears in the furthest cubicle. “I think we can all be a very cohesive team. I hope you won’t mind if I take some of your time today to meet each of you individually, but until then, I’ll let you get back to it.”

At that, Ms. Ventuswill and Mr. Lawrence turned to step into his office, closing the door behind them. Chatter erupted immediately in the office space as cubicle-mates quickly began discussing their new boss. Vishnal’s cubicle was not exempt from that.

“Did you hear that?” Leon demanded, dropping into his chair so he leaned over the back. “His name is Lawrence. You think he’s one of the CEO’s kids?”

Clorica tapped her chin thoughtfully before saying, “Yes, I think he is. I remember seeing him at a couple of the company gatherings.”

Leon scoffed. “Nepotism in its finest.” He propped his chin on the back of his chair and swung around in a slow arc. “So, how do you think he’ll be? Overly familiar, open-door, pushover? Useless and lazy slob? Or a micromanaging tight-ass who’s desperate to impress daddy with his first big boy job?”

“I don’t know, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.” Vishnal shrugged.

Leon hummed and spun around in a circle. “I bet he micromanages to impress daddy. He gives me that same small-anxious dog vibes that you do, Vis.”

“Hey! I do not micro-manage!”

Clorica snickered. “Only because you’re at the bottom of the food chain, mister color-coded-productivity tracker.”

Vishnal merely huffed and turned back to work. He would have to be more diligent than normal to make sure he got all of his work done with the added distractions today. His productivity tracker kept him organized, damnit, it was useful.

Mr. Lawrence worked through his personal introductions to their office group in order of seniority, it appeared, and Vishnal was the last one to go into his office. It was strange stepping into an office that had, just a few days ago, been covered with Mr. Volkanon’s personal touches – the man had a lot of grandchildren and plenty of pictures of all of them. The walls were still bare, freshly spackled and painted over to make a blank canvas for Mr. Lawrence’s décor of choice. All he had hung so far were two framed degrees, his Bachelor’s and a freshly obtained Master’s, but Vishnal spied a box sitting in a corner that looked like it had some more decorations tucked inside. Mr. Volkanon’s old desk had been replaced, as had his chair, with shiny new counterparts. Mr. Lawrence’s desk was already half covered with a scattering of paperwork and binders.

Vishnal paused in the doorway and knocked to announce his presence.

Mr. Lawrence looked up from the paper he was skimming and smiled, “Yes, come on it.” He walked around the desk and shook Vishnal’s hand. “Vishnal, right? Old Volkanon had nothing but good things to say about you.”

“O-oh, he did?” Vishnal’s brain forgot how to work briefly as he took in Mr. Lawrence. He was much more handsome up close than Vishnal had thought, and young – well, probably older than Vishnal, but still younger than any manager he’d ever known. His brown eyes sparkled, and his classes complimented the shape of his face, his impeccable suit fit him perfectly, cut to properly accentuate his lithe frame. He was vaguely aware that Mr. Lawrence was still speaking, he heard nothing because all him mind was doing was screaming a long, agonized “Ooooh nooo, he’s cute!”

He tuned in just in time to catch, “Go ahead and take a seat, I’d just like to take a minute to get to know you better.”

“Uh, yes Mister Lawrence.” Vishnal hurried to sit in the spare desk chair that had been rolled into the office.

“Please,” Mr. Lawrence tittered wearily, “Just call me Arthur. Mister Lawrence is my father, and I’m not nearly as much a stickler for formalities as he is.”

“Oh, okay, Arthur.” Vishnal liked the way that name rolled off his tongue. His anxiety on the other hand, didn’t quite care for that much informality between him and his new boss, and it was doing a wonderful job keeping a very tight leash on Vishnal’s imagination. Now was not the time to be fantasizing about the things he and his boss might do on this pristine new desk. Nope. Definitely not! To derail that train of thought, Vishnal tried a small joke. “I bet you’ve said that line about a hundred times today, huh?”

“Ninety-seven times, to be exact.” Mr. Law- Arthur smiled back weakly. Vishnal laughed weakly, realizing his joke had been recognized. “Really it’s more for logistics’ sake than anything. With half of my family working in this company, and a good portion of them my brothers, things get a little confusing with a dozen Mister Lawrences running around. That and it makes me feel old.” He shuddered comically and grinned. “I’m not even thirty yet, I can’t be a Mister.”

“Yeah, that makes sense. But I suppose it makes ordering company letter head much easier.”

Arthur laughed, genuinely this time, and it was such an endearing warm sound. “Yes, that it does.” Then the smile fell somewhat and he straightened the papers in front of him. “Now to business, I understand you’re our newest addition to the team. You just started… eight months ago?”

Vishnal somehow managed to keep his wild imagination in check over the next fifteen minutes and carried on an entirely professional conversation with his very cute new boss. How, he wasn’t entirely certain, because he was sure any moment Arthur would notice how flush Vishnal’s cheeks had become or how sweaty he suddenly was, or the nervous stuttering. But he said nothing about it and sent Vishnal back to work with another firm handshake and a smile.

Arthur must have just been polite, because as soon as Vishnal got back to his cubicle Leon called him out immediately. “Ooooh, I know that look. Someone’s got a crush on the new boss.”

“N-no I don’t!”

“But, Vis,” Clorica said, so sweetly and innocently. “Why is your face all red then?” She rolled over and gently poked on of Vishnal’s burning hot cheeks.

“Anxiety. I don’t do well with authority figures. I was nervous.”

His cubicle mates shared knowing looks and diabolical grins. “Uh-huh, sure,” Leon drawled. “A problem with authority figures.”

Vishnal brushed them off and turned back to his work, waking up the computer with a determined wiggle of the mouse. Leon would get bored eventually if he didn’t interact with him, and Clorica would eventually drop the game and get back to her own work. And so what if he had a little crush on their new boss? It was just a crush, perfectly normal and innocent and harmless. Even if his imagination was doing its best to bring up images of what the two of them could do in that office, or in the copy room, or maybe leaving early together on a Friday to go get some drinks…

“Oh look,” Clorica’s gleeful voice chimed in. “Now his ears are red too.”

To be reasonable, video calls can be an irritating part of remote work. (Surprise, surprise, DTEN is a Zoom Rooms partner as well.) If I were to risk a guess, enterprise hardware may not be growing now that many white-collar office complex stay closed to adhere to regional stay-at-home orders. Or possibly this is a relocation created to profit from the fact that more Americans would like to continue working from home in the future. However even if either of these scenarios holds true, this still seems like a slapdash attempt to get remote workers to overpay for something that a laptop or tablet– you know, completely multifunctional devices that much of us utilize every day– can do for no additional cost.
