• When I started shipping them: hey did you guys know theres a chin tilt™ in the movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle Of The Realms (2021) that Ive seen this january of the year 2022

• My thoughts: I hate them so much. theyre perfect foils in almost every way you can think of. they have an extremely appealing enemies-to-friends arc. in fact they tick most of the enemies-to-friends-to-lovers dynamics in one way or another, in one incarnation or another. with the multiple timelines deal you can even sprinkle a little bit of soulmates trope in there. you cannot have one without the other in the general consciousness. theyre perfect opposites and so similar at the same time. their shared storyline is Romantic with a capital R, with its fair share of drama, revelations, guilt, duty, honor, and conflicted feelings, two assassin clans alike in dignity, in fair earthrealm where we lay our scene. theyre LITERALLY fire and ice and everything about them just bring you back to that point. AND theyre both stupid pretty on top of that.

• What makes me happy about them: they were grown in a lab for 30 years to appeal to me personally💙💛 literally tick every single boxes

• What makes me sad about them: if they werent two guys they wouldve been canon ages ago and you know it

• Things done in fanfic that annoys me: mischaracterization in favor of the author's personal fantasies, usually sexual. Sucks so much when a good fic or a good concept gets ruined by them being OOC during (sometimes uneeded) sexy times. I know thats like, 90% of the fics on AO3 but still, lemme mourn.

• Things I look for in fanfic: if we're going Legends or OG timeline, you can never go wrong with a good old devoted protector scorpion. If we're going current timeline, oooh babey gimme that grandmasters middle age mutual pining, sometimes keeping things simple is where its at.

• My wishlist: so fun fact, most of my wishlist already kinda happened, thanks snowblind but literally everything before it. So I guess I would really just like to see the two of them interact in a casual setting for once, see how theyd normally interact. Second would be cuddles and kisses ofc.

• Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Im a subsmoke enjoyer but ONLY in a tragic doomed teenage romance kinda way, two boy best friends in an extremely restrictive environment that forbid close bonds let alone intimate, come on. Other than that... kuai has stupid chemistry with a lot of characters but in the actual story i dont see a lot of potential candidates. As for hanzo, I like him with harumi ngl, if he manages to get his family back good for him, but just like kuai, the ninjas are pretty isolated otherwise and have the closest narrative bond with each other so if not with the other well I dont think Id see it :/

• My happily ever after for them: Legends/OG timelime wise, scorpy continues to play guardian angel with benefits while kuai gives him a purpose, current timeline is the two grandmasters accidentaly making their clans more and more alike due to them sharing a similar mindset, which could perhaps eventually end with them reuniting the clans as it once was, as joint grandmasters wink wink. but my personal favorite is the mk9 sub zero ending where both of them "disappear together into legends" and are just living together in a little house in the middle of nowhere when theyre not avenging the innocents. and disappear even more into legends when they both get to the netherrealm killing the shit out of everything in sight there.

Joelleity: ur scattered nonthesis 🤝 my scattered reply but godddddd i genuinely remember loving a lot of B's costuming/styling even after reading criticism that made sense but im always just a sucker for any media that Tries stuff and boy were they trying stuff but i have gotten a feeling from what i remember and from what uve been mentioning that their choices are like. very. representative of larger sticking points abt it as a show as a whole lol for sure--

one more. tie that in somehow with what i read days ago abt mary's fashion being pulled partly from like a century ahead as a very . reflection of her character. which i loved finding out i love so much that theres genuine thought put into mary. all of a part w 'exaggerating to tell something true' my beloved storytelling style. mwah. chefs kiss. also. why clothes fastenings if not to unfasten the clothes? so extremely true

lmao See thats a mood. like i do think the costuming is one my favourite parts of the show. that's just not saying much. like they do have some colour theming that's pretty nice in there. they are going for like. amusement park regency or smth and that's gonna be a vibe for people who want that and good for them

YES. yes yes love this point. big agree i thinking about how beloved every crew member is cause how True the feel. like my friend who works at a department clothing store like (looks at lucius) "im pretty sure we sell that" and its a big part of i think jims appeal of like. cool ass nonbinary character that the camera just. loves. just the clothes give them the most dramatic silhouette on the show (with lighting to match), they look like a gun slinging cowboy but… u know pirate with knives. AND they still have that vibe after the beard comes off. I will say, its probably even a theme of bridgerton that the characters like. dont get to wear things they like (thinking of little yellow girl from derry girls and bookish little sister. cause like society and structure. compliance narrative etc) but u know, how deep is that. versus blackbonnet identity and clothing EVERYTHING

(i think her fashion thing even passes on to the kids in stede absence cause [checks screenshots] yeah alma starts wearing pants and both of them have much more active looking clothing.) i love mary as a character so much in her own right and narratively to like hold stedes feet to the fucking fire but also be the. foil maybe. for him and how like. society traps him (cause stede, not maliciously was trapping her). so much thought and care for her. a random headcanon: having met his pinoy relatives (from mom's side) they were convinced hierophant was a dead relative's spirit for a long while guarding him bc pinoy superstition and all, that's why his mom scolds her family for making him think that way bc she hasn't grown out of hierophant. ALSO that's what he discusses with abdul!!!!!

general opinion over them: hugest cc ever oh my GOD the way most people treat him makes me froth at the mouth i only trust certain people about her but he's also another genuinely great character and i feel like even if he could've been used for great potential his final battle with dio wraps up his character nicely so he's played his part well.

general opinion over him: hes such a tragic character but also so beautifully written, araki knows to give villains fucked endings but he's one of the few who got a respectful death (choked out by an 11-year old which in comparison, is better than i don't know eternal limbo as a detective, infinite death loop by 15-year old or sent to space never to die EVER), he deserves good things but also he was a priest there had to be some sort of retribution for that (what word was it i forgot)

I don't know any of your OCs, but those are all good questions so all of them for the first OC to pop into your head!

oh honey…… normally id be like “oh wow no way” but yknow what screw it, im predictable so we’re doin RYUJIN BABEY. forgive my lack of macrons in his name but formatting that on desktop messes everything up, so we going basic babey.

What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?

first thing we considered was the most basic of origins (cloning), and how we could make him as opposite to Raiden as possible while also making them very similar, purely as a JOKE. right after that it was appearance, giving him black hair from the get go in contrast to Raiden’s platinum, and then his name. and then the next day i immediately decided his voiceclaim was Yuri Lowenthal lol

Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?

yup! character wise, he was created as a foil to Raiden. visually, his appearance just kind of happened (and i had a convenient excuse to avoid much machinery), but i did pull insp from a bunch of characters from other things. FMA’s Greed is the most obvious example (SUBCONSCIOUSLY, i swear), and i actually based his gloves on Deku’s from MHA!

How did you choose their name?

right after joking for abt 5 mins with Joe and Steel, i went on a quick scour through the names of japanese gods to go along with Raiden’s. in hindsight, Fujin might have been a better pick (as he and Raijin are often depicted together), but i liked the sound of Ryujin better and now its too late lol

In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?

besides from him being a clone because Big Boss has too many and it was SOMEONE ELSES TURN, definitely the Patriots, the SOP system, and all the cyborg elements. i got into MGS largely because of MGR, so i was very intrigued by all the hyper-anime cyborg stuff. plus the big narrative shared by Raiden against child soldiers and mind control.

Is there any significance behind their hair color?

not much beyond it being as opposite to platinum as we could get lol. same with his haircut - we wanted it short cause Raiden’s is so long. (also, Joe suggested a red haired Ryu early on but i forgot to ever try it out lol)

Is there any significance behind their eye color?

not a ton! makes him look more “evil” and goes with his color scheme is all. and again, opposite to Raiden’s blue eyes

Is there any significance behind their height?

nope. Raiden is 5′10″ and so is he. SIDENOTE, i choose to believe that Raiden is 5′10″ WITHOUT the robo heels, so hes actually 2~ inches taller than Ryu hfjdskfds

What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?

hmmmmm. complicated feelings on a father figure (Zeno in this case), aggressive/chaotic tendencies (hes a lot like a more explosive me honestly), just trying to find something to call your own. lots of little things, but thats the main stuff!

Are they based off of you, in some way?

personality wise, kinda. like i said, he resembles a more explosive and traumatized me, with less moral teachings to fall back on for a real long time. hes a way bigger jerk than me tho lol (i hope)

If they have an LI, how much of their character is tailored to be compatible to that person?

…. //cough cough okay SO. i havent said this anywhere yet, but you know how i said he and Courtney become really good friends? well as always Joe and i are suckers so we uh. we kinda actually ship them sdhfjdskfhj. youll prolly get content on that eventually

so all in all, not at all lol. i didnt intend to ship him with anyone when we made him, so he was all molded before we considered bringing Courtney into the picture. i hadnt even played MGR when we made him lol, so if i had it might have had a bigger impact in the crafting stage. we just think they work together regardless!

Did you know what the OC’s sexuality would be at the time of their creation?

i rarely if ever consider my characters sexualities. as a catholic, i never ship my characters outside of M/F ships, so its never really a factor. but, Ryu is a rare case where i have thought abt it a bit more because of his actual physiology. hes likely ace or ace leaning cause uh. well as a full conversion cyborg, he doesnt have the parts if you get what i mean.

What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?

drawing him has because very easy and a go to when im stuck, writing him is actually very fun if a little difficult, and i havent made any kind of edit lol (tho i do have a p snazzy aesthetic board). i guess maybe his design, cause while it came easily at first i keep having to tweak it around lol, i need to make another update post on all the little stuff ive changed.

oh but his YOKAI MASK is HARD TO DRAW

How far past the canon events that take place in their world have you extended their story, if at all?

EDIT: i misread this, but my answer is still p solid lol

thats a tricky one. Ryu’s story doesnt have a definitive end, because he only exists in the hypotheticals after the current end of MGS. the repercussions of everything from canon will continue to be problems for a long time, so he and Raiden have a lot to tackle and lots of room for potential stories. Ryu’s story continues, because he isnt and won’t be in a fixed state until he dies, and theres just so much to play around with. not to mention that he and Raiden will probably age a lot slower because so little of them is organic anymore. his story will end some day, i just dont know when ;)

If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?

1) hes a child. physically, hes an adult, but mentally and emotionally so much of him is just a boy. his body was hypergrown, but his mind hasnt had enough time to catch up with it, and while its not his fault it can cause a lot of problems. it and his conditioning by the Patriots were what made him stick to his guns in trying to kill Raiden for 6 years in the first place, so i have to remember that hes not emotionally mature and really just needs time to grow and heal more than anything else. 

2) his development has to make sense, be gradual. its so easy to want to make him be better nice and quickly, but hes got 10 years of pain, being alone, and bitterness under his belt and little else, so realistically it takes him a long while to become a genuinely pretty good person. one step at a time, and trust is a huge barrier.

What is something about your OC that can make you laugh?

homeboy is a STUPID BABY and a RAT BOY. on a technical level, hes so smart. raw skill, battle tactics, science, history, math, reflexes, manipulation via intimidation, so so smart. but hes so dumb. cant see the forest through the trees. doesnt know how to actually interact with people outside of a mutual gain relationship. actually fails his lifelong goal because hes an arrogant idiot. 

also if you reference any kind of more modern pop culture he will have no idea what youre talking about. what the HELL is a Terminator and WHY are you calling me that

What is something about your OC that can make you cry?

basically everything else. so so traumatized. boxes himself in so much. cant deal with his emotions and is so confused and scared of caring about people. got his first hug when he was like 2 but learns to hate physical contact so much, and doesnt get hugged again until 8+ years later. saw his father figure get blinded. saw his OTHER and first father figure die. theres a long list and i cry a lot.

Is there some element you regret adding to your OC or their story?

sometimes i regret a making him look so human, not much cyborg showing at all, but in the long run it makes him much easier and enjoyable to draw. plus i needed to show up Raiden SOMEHOW. and, if i want i could add more to him down the line so  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What is your favorite fact about your OC?

oof. hard one. him being a cliche joke character is such a big one, but genuinely? i love his redemption arc so much. i live to see characters become better people and heal, make friends and protect them with their lives. its in everything but thats what makes it so good, i have so much content to pull inspiration from. i love working with characters like him and im very glad we made him.
