N is one of those characters I adore but don’t talk about a lot (did you know in evolutions he’s voiced by chris hackney who’s dimitri’s English va!)

I mean at first you see an innocent kid who grew up surrounded by pokemon, he’s able to understand these pokemon and be at one with them because of this

Then in comes Ghetsis and Plasma, who end up using N’s innocence to mould him into the ideal king for Ghetsis’s beliefs

And just like that he’s used for someone else’s plans, used as a pawn because of someone else’s fucked up ideals and it kills me that N had his innocence, the bond with him and the team he grew up with ripped away

Because Ghetsis decided to use him for his own gain (much like someone else we know)

Now N gets fed this idea that Pokemon and humans need to be split because Ghetsis gives him a team of pokemon that have been hurt by their previous trainers

N only saw the bad side because that’s what Ghetsis wanted him to see and we know Ghetsis was using him as a pawn in his game

AND THIS HURTS BECAUSE THAT POOR BOY FROM A YOUNG AGE WAS USED TO FIT SOMEONE ELSES IDEALS AND IT KILLS ME

BUT! He meets Hilda/Hilbert and because of them and their Pokemon N begins to have doubts

(that’s because of their mons thoughts and how much they enjoy being with the protag)

So even if he continues to be on Plasma’s side, the seed of doubt has been planted anyway!

Then you battle him time and time again, he befriends Zekrom/Reshirham and ends up battling the protag and looses

He then tells you about his doubts after Ghetsis has been defeated, he knew when he met the protags pokèmon that something wasn’t right

And then he leaves you with his dragon (a popular headcannon I think, is that Hilda or Hilbert end up going after him)

quick thing about fabian in the nightmare forrest

1. I'm going to use adaine as an example as they have similar checkpoints but fabian laying on the ground for chungledown bim and the rat was not the same as adaine talking to her future self on the cliffside. the actual parallel with adaine's arc was the moment that adaine stepped off the cliff (it was the acceptance of and moving towards your fear) yes they had different vibes but thats because their arcs were different

2. chungledown bim and the rat were comedic vibes on some level yes but that not only is something that was consistent with most of the other nightmare forrest on some level (fig had hilda hilda adaine was stuck in a circus riz's end realization was the need to sleep in a bed) the fact that i fills a larger swath of the time also fits with fabian's arc that season and especially in the nightmare forrest about fabian not being his father, of course his fear wasn't this big haunting image he was terrified of not being this scary serious adventurer like his father so he's confronted with these more joke antagonist because they don't line up with that narrative of being the same as his father with enemies like james whitclaw (while still an enemy the main purpose of the forest was to confront fears

3. fabian did have the emotional conversation that lead toa confrontation about himself, when he was falling he conversed with cathilda about not writing his face on the world, in the scene we see him confront someone who has loved him all that time without being some grand legend and was forced to consider wether that would stay true if he didn't grow to be like his father and if the love he felt was going to go away if he was not some massive hero, in the end he found an anchor, his conversation ending by him stating that certainty that he would still be loved even without being this big hero or having the same intense and strong presence as his father because he knew his friends would still care and he knew cathilda would still care

sorry for the long thing and everyones entitled to their own thoughts about how things went down it's mainly just that whenever i've seen the take that fabian's forest trial was incomplete it never includes the final part of the nightmare forest scene that ties it together again in he end its your choice how you feel about it sorry for bugging you

don't worry about bugging me — asks are always welcome! besides, i don't mind someone writing long things (considering my usual type of posts lol) so no worries! I'm not sure if there's a question here or if you want me to simply read your thoughts, but if it's alright with you I'd like to clarify why I took the stance I did!

all the Bad Kids had different experiences and scenes in the Forest — you're absolutely right in that the moments I picked out weren't so much compatible as checkpoints in the story — I wasn't particularly looking for direct parallels timeline-wise, so much as comparing the general gist of their scenes.

Fabian's scene just stood out to me more because it dealt with a topic much more... grim, than I was expecting for the show to touch on, and the implications went relatively undiscussed, in my opinion.

similarly, I do agree that Fabian's Forest trial was completed, but Nightmare Cathilda only really had one line, and Fabian's resolution of it was "So maybe I'll never write my face, or my name on the world. But I'll be with the Bad Kids." it's a proclamation of separating himself from his father's legacy, but it's also not necessarily connected to the overarching topic that I was trying to discuss (forcing to submit to assault), which is why I didn't bring it up.

finally, your second point I very much agree with! storytelling-wise, it's a nice parallel of Bill Seacaster having grand, fearsome foes and Fabian to some level wanting to be equally grand, with equally grand foes and not having those. it's a way to separate him from his father, and I don't necessarily mind that there's joke characters (Hilda Hilda, giant German Shepherd, as you mentioned the circus and bed etc.) since it's a show meant to be entertaining and it provided levity to what was otherwise a very intense scene.

what my main "issue" (and I use that word loosely) with the joke characters was, was that the fear they evoked wasn't taken seriously. Fabian's Forest characters were funny, but afterwards, despite the character expressing fear, his friends continue to poke fun of him by conjuring an image of the rat and making it touch him, etc.

most of the other Kids' issues are brought up later in canon in a serious context — Adaine's Oracle position comes up a lot in JY, Baron comes up later again, Gorgug stops doubting his intelligence and becomes an artificer in JY. all things that canon treats with quite some grace and touches on, which honestly — I think is great.

this post was mostly meant to highlight my opinion that Fabian's issues, still, are glossed over/made into a joke even after the Forest scene is over, and that coercion/dubious consent is, like, a step further than falling off a cliff or crawling through a tunnel, which is why I brought that up. even in JY, the Bad Kids poke fun of Fabian's fears.

that said, you are absolutely free to disagree with me and this is by no means an attempt to disregard your message or convince you — you make some great points, and I think I might have gone for something slightly to the left of what you're getting at — but that's alright! If you don't want an unsolicited Alfendi rant thats fine deadass we're just hyperfixated on our own source (+ have no outlet) and uhh yeah we have kind of a unique perspective on the whole Alfendi thing since we literally have it as a sub-system in our own system (hi) but you know. We don't uh headcanon it in the same way for lack of a better term? To put a lot of medical nonsense out the way, for a system to be programmed in adulthood (like Alfendi was by Justin (i think that's what his name was idfk anymore)) they need to be predisposed to programming as a child. Basically this comes from a specific type of basically abuse in a way where the person would be in a semi-conscious state where the programming would take place (think how Al was in a coma as justin programmed him basically). Obviously Layton would NOT be out there doing that lets be honest but uhhh @/mystery-room did a fanart of Alfendi as a kid in the context of NWOS and lowk that was genius? Cause likeee if he was in America he could have been idk orphaned ir something and I've always thought his programming would be from a fucked up science experiment or something. Basically cause uh Hilda is an international policewoman or whatever her job was i then thought oh well what if she found Alfendi's old like experiment file and therefore thats how he finds out that system is muchhhhh bigger.

The thing abt programmed systems is that the host (Potty) would be made so he was unaware of the rest, but programming an extra host in would make the original host aware at least of that other alter. The thing abt Placid is that he's triggered to front to cover up the murder which is super typical of programmed systems because yk for example an alter would be programmed to uhh cover up abuse or something. Yeah it's insane, anyways LBMR is accurate and inaccurate at the same time, shits wildin

if youre down to hear my thoughts on it, i wish we had gotten a sequel game to establish his brother and also why he was such a nutjob before being brainwashed (joking ofc, but he was like. more intense. yknow. ofc you know we both played the game), as well as a dynamic between layton and al. It is kind of sticky when we start discussing the idea of childhood abuse beyond an abstract trauma from being an orphan, but i dont doubt that would be a suitable backdrop for either further abuse or even just a narrative foundation for explaining away the more intricate details of developing systems (as lbmr is prone to do lol).

Also, i think the idea of at least a hilda focused segment in a hypothetical sequel being used to explore potty's system would be kickass. im so here for that

Im curious about the sides/aus

infodump time

firstly, the b side universe is basically just a whole different universe than thadrofinica where I can explore different concepts with my characters in a more modern context

B side sf is a homeless kid that travels across the world, experiencing it first hand and not ever having a home to return to (not that it bothers him)

He mostly travels by foot or by hitching rides on trains, and is a very laid back version of sf if he wasn’t as traumatized

B side loading is a gigantic terrifying behemoth that lives in the woods as a hunter. He’s very food oriented and spends most of his time cooking offerings for draven (who’s now a weather spirit, but still his love interest)

b side loading is significantly more terrifying because he actually takes his job seriously while still letting his unhingedness slip through every now and then, resulting in clean but not necessarily quick kills.

He’s also significantly more mature and optimized for hunting, possessing his projectile gloves which shoot bullets much like cuphead and some actual patience and self control

Pheonix is a biomechanical terror rampaging the land, nothing new other than the fact she now has some upgrades

Reena is a genie that travels around via client to client - one of her rules for her wishes is that you need to pass the bottle on to someone new in order for her wishes to properly come true. She doesn’t really mind being a genie, and also isn’t a very malicious one. Mischievous, yes, but not malicious

The medical crew also has b sides, all of them being in a band that travels around and either plays for free or for charity for those in need

the c sides live in a universe I describe as the dream realm, so everything is very abstract and strange

every one of these character designs are supposed to explore the abstract and unrealistic versions of my characters where I can just go crazy and not need to have an explanation for it

C side sf is meant to represent the dreams I have where I just. Fly around and explore. He’s like sf if he weren’t traumatized and also older (around 16-17)

C side Reena is a zombie and she is very chill and nice. She wears a mask to not infect others (and she also maintained her intelligence and doesn’t try to eat everyone) she’s meant to vaguely represent the apocalypse dreams I have sometimes

C side Phoenix is a perpetual gory gutsy mess with a whole bunch of things wrong with her and she’s meant to represent my gore dreams (don’t ask unless you really want to know) im quite proud of her design and how visceral and over the top it is and she’s just there to terrorize

C side draven is a swamp monster and he’s meant to be a nod to the character that inspired draven in the first place, Sigurd from Hilda

he doesn’t. Really do much. And doesn’t represent any dreams at the moment so moving on

C side loading is a cyborg who’s built for mobility, representing my rare but absolutely sensational parkour dreams

c side loading mood can be controlled and monitored by the dial and indicator on his chest so it’s easy to keep him under control

C side Andy and Cedric are healers as always, with cedric being a spirit of healing and Andy being his mortal supervisor/guide

but yeah there’s a bunch of other characters in the c side universe that aren’t necessarily aus like sovanna and Alaska

one day I might develop these worlds more but thadrofinica comes first

As promised Thoughts. S3 was pretty amazing tbh. I loved getting introduced to tofoten, which began foreshadowing that this season would focus a lot more on Johanna than previously. Watching Astrid and Johanna reconnect slowly only for it to be broken apart by Astrid's lie. AAAGH. Also the inside of the fairy mound (or the "borderlands" as they later call it) is definitely a level up on spookiness for hilda. It really made their situation feel that much more compelling and dangerous, and I felt real relief when they got dug out. (It's also what makes the failure of the kids and anders to dig hilda out that much more scary(I mean when the mound crumbles??(wait thats too many asides))) The inbetween episodes (3 and 4) were not bad persay, but you can really feel the fact that the season got cut by 6 episodes. It doesn't feel like much time passes between them and more like just a random cutaway. If we got 2 or 3 more episodes I think that would have made these non plot episodes much better. We could have also gotten more louise! The fact that she's introduced in one episode, and apparently added to the friend group is really sad. :( It makes sense, she couldn't have really been involved in the final plot after only being in one episode. But man would it have been so nice to see more of her.

here's the basic rundown on them!

some more things about them though:

i use the day i finish designing an oc as their birthday, so alto's is september 13. they're 23 at the time of bw2

full team is fearow, unfezant, swanna, rufflet and vullaby. they're like 4th-5th gym level kind of strength in battle

somewhat inspired by the time that as a kid i went to this beach, known for having a one-winged pelican around. i never got to see it but i always remembered it. alto's initial partner pokemon was going to be a pelipper, but i did want to give the underappreciated fearow (which i actually really like! a lot more than pelipper haha) a little spotlight. i still kept the one-winged pelipper concept - it's now the logo of the skyline sanctuary visible on alto's second outfit. it lives with the rest of alto's family at the sanctuary as one of the helper pokemon

taught themself how to sing and dance as a kid so they could play with the birds in the sanctuary, but ending up really liking it and they do it as a hobby. you could NOT convince alto to sing or dance in front of other people though. gun to their head they will not

sucks at throwing poke balls but thats what the capture styler's for

afraid of thunderstorms, not in the afraid of loud noises way but because their family are all extremely wary of them. they're dangerous times for bird pokemon so they have to be on guard during them, so even when they're not at the sanctuary, storms put them on edge

alto doesn't battle often, but people who have battled them think they're annoying to fight lmao. when facing wild pokemon as a ranger, their main tactics are dodging and disrupting to get openings to use their styler, and they incorporate those same tactics in their battles

also despite part of why i made alto being that they were going to be paired with n i dont think i explained their whole story here???

between the remains of team plasma that either joined neo team plasma or are making up for their actions in the driftveil safehouse, there's a small number that still fully believe pokemon should be separated from humans for their sake. they operate independently, still convincing some to release pokemon or outright stealing them just like the original plasma. this is one of the reasons some rangers were dispatched to unova to help recover these pokemon

alto gets assigned to capture and calm an ursaring who took its release very badly and is now rampaging through the forest. while searching for it, he runs across n who was busy playing with pansage so deep in the forest he didn't get the evacuation memo. n asks what someone else is doing so far into the woods, alto explains their mission, n volunteers to help, alto thinks thats insane you cant do that and leaves. "i don't need help. i got this"

they don't got this

they end up taking a direct slash, and it would have been worse had n not worried about someone going that far into the forest alone with a dangerous pokemon and went in the same direction. n jumps in, calms the ursaring himself, and drags alto out to get medical help

alto usually takes a while to warm up to new people but on account of n literally saving their life he gets to skip most of the aloof alto phase. they end up great friends, alto admiring n a lot

alto, however, has a very strong sense of justice and never forgives criminals. in particular they hate team plasma because of what they've had to witness firsthand. n is ex-plasma, the ex-King no less. n soon learns about alto's views and knows that he should tell alto the truth soon. its harder then when he told hilda though, he's already such good friends with alto and this aill likely ruin it

he finally ends up telling them about a year after their first meeting. just as he thought, alto's distraught and leaves

over the next month though alto feels like shit over the whole thing. yes they're not sure if they can trust n after he kept that information from them for a year. but n was different to how any of the still malevolent team plasma members were like...?

they happen to get assigned to work with the driftveil safehouse to help them handle some pokemon

surprise asshole n's sisters live there and they've been told all about you

both of them are reluctant to work with alto not just because of what happened with n but because it shows they don't trust anyone at the safehouse. for the sake of professionalism alto promises to put all bias aside and carry out whatever tasks needed of them

working with the safehouse makes them realize that people can change. every ex-plasma member here is genuinely trying their best to atone. alto finally admits to themself that they really screwed up with n and asks anthea and concordia if they can tell n they want to apologize. they slowly patch things up with him from there
