Dean Winchester and Cas Novak, along with their friend Charlie Bradbury, have been close friends since sixth grade. Growing up only a couple of streets apart, they were as close as most friends could be. However after years together for middle school, high school and college, Cas ends up moving away to Denver, just when a new stage of their lives was about to begin. Cas is miserable in Denver, missing the life he had back in Lawrence. However, when he realised that he was in love with his best friend, his male best friend, he knew he couldn't stay. There was no way Dean would ever be in love with him... right? However, when Cas awakes to a missed call and voicemail from his friend, he realises that what he perceived wasn't quite as accurate as he thought. So, he begins the five hundred mile journey home.

I will say it time and time again, our fandom is the luckiest, because somehow we got all the best writers out of it. It doesn’t matter if the fic is over 100k or, like this one, less than 10, our writers always manage to give every fic their all, proven once again by Five Hundred Miles. 

This short story is worthy of a Pinefest, in my humble opinion, the way the author packs in Cas’s pining, and even though it’s told from Cas’s POV, a healthy dose of Dean’s pining too, told cleverly though the voicemail Dean left for Cas. A good Cas POV is nothing to sleep on, and this author manages one of my favorites in this short, but so good fic. Don’t miss this one!

However, despite all the sudden changes, even the darkest of storms will pass.

And for Ellie, it happens on her first day at Lawrence High, where she meets Lizzie Novak. The girl with the messy hair and confident demeanour. The girl who understands her better than anyone. As the two become good friends, it becomes obvious to the both of them that they were meant to meet. And it wasn’t just because of the way they clicked so instantaneously, but rather because of the way their dads seem to be around each other. From the soft eyes to the gooey smiles. Suddenly, the two fourteen year olds notice that there is more about their two dads and their relationship that meets the eye. Together, they hatch the ultimate plan.

Eventually, after walking for quite some time, Dean stopped in his tracks. He watched as Castiel stopped too, looking over at him with a bemused expression.

“What is it Dean?” He asked. “Do you hear something?”

No, Dean wanted to say as he stared into the distance. He didn’t hear something.

He saw something.

Up ahead, more than twenty feet from where they stood, something glowed.

Dean was entranced by it and began to walk towards it. It stood out like a sore thumb; the bright, ethereal glow creating a dichotomy of dark and light within the woods. It looked so magical, so inviting that before he had even thought about it, Dean shoved his torch back into Castiel’s hands and began to run, moving towards it as quickly as he could.

He heard the prince shout and chase after him. But for once, Dean ignored it.

The grass turned into stone and Dean almost took a tumble as he ran up onto the platform. It was there that he saw what was shining, as it was clearly unmistakable up close. There, half-buried in the stone, was a sword. It was a large sword, much larger than his own. It had a shiny blue hilt, with a diamond encrusted into it. The blade was similar to silver in colour, but with a slightly icy hue. Dean was unsure whether it was meant to look like that, or if it was the light that seemed to radiate off of it.

Without thinking, Dean reached forward and grabbed the hilt with both hands. He heard Castiel’s faint cry of, “what are you doing”, but found he couldn’t answer him. Instead, he began to pull, attempting to unsheathe the sword from the stone with all his might. The air around him became cooler and a shiver ran down his spine. He pulled at the sword, at first feeling a fair amount of resistance from the weapon. He kept trying, tugging, ignoring the sting of his hands and arms, the tension in his shoulders, the sweat beading on his forehead. For some reason, all his mind could tell him was that this sword was his. He needed it. He was to take it.

The sword resisted for awhile, until all of a sudden, it was as if the stone turned to mush. Just like magic, that resistance was gone and Dean gracefully was able to yank the sword up, pulling it completely free from the stone.

Around him, the darkness dissipated and light immediately began to shine downwards from the sky above. The whole area illuminated, so that Dean could see the trees and grass around him and the other elements of wildlife scattered around. He came back to himself, away from the hyper focused state he had been in from the moment he saw the sword. He blinked a couple of times, glancing down at the sword in shock, before turning to make sure the prince was alright.

Castiel stood a few feet away, both of the torches now abandoned on the ground, no longer lit. He looked over at Dean with a mixture of emotions: awe, surprise, bewilderment. When he first took the sword, he had no idea why it was so important or why it was just abandoned here in the middle of the woods. But as he saw Castiel’s face, the prince’s eyes trained solely on the weaponry, he pieced it together all at once.

Oh no.

A hundred years later, Dean awakes alone with no memory of who he once was. All he has is a new companion, a magic amulet and a deep longing inside of him that he can’t place.

If there is one thing I love about this fandom, it’s that there is no shortage of fics with unique summaries or POVs you’ve never thought of before. A Five Step Guide is in the latter. A story told from the POV of Dean’s teenage daughter? Say less. 

And then this fic didn’t disappoint. Full disclosure, it is a split POV with Dean, which is actually perfect, because dad!Dean is a treasure, and his crush on Dr. Novak is adorable and perfect from first meet to when they eventually figure their stuff out. Dean is wonderfully written as a sweet and supportive dad who is helping his daughter grieve through the loss of her mom and a move back to Dean’s hometown. 

That’s where Ellie meets Cas’s daughter Lizzie, who also lost her mom years before. They become fast friends, and so do their dads and when the girls start to meddle, well, it’s a sweetly told misadventure that their dads attempt to manage, all while trying to manage their growing feelings for each other. 

The fic does deal with some heavy themes but they are told beautifully through Ellie and Dean’s POV as he watches his daughter learn to live without her mom. Extra kudos to the author for handling that theme throughout the fic so delicately. The result is a sweet story about moving on and growing up and oh, yeah, can’t forget, watching their dads fall in love.

Excerpt: Castiel Novak had known Dean Winchester his entire life. Their parents had been friends for years before either of them were even conceived; a friendship that only grew once they came into the equation. He had been coming to the Winchester’s farm since he was still in diapers – in fact – he had pictures of him only wearing diapers on the farm. And in those pictures, Dean was always by his side, sporting his own, accompanied by a cheeky baby grin. They had been inseparable since the moment they met, growing from boisterous toddlers to rambunctious children. They’d run through the vineyards under the golden glow of the sun -- rosy cheeked as they chased each other through field after field, until one sent the other tumbling down. On rainy days, they’d trench back to the house with mud-soaked boots, sending their mothers into a frenzy as they shoved them into the bathtub, not letting them out until they scrubbed every bit of dirt off their bodies.  Even when they grew into teenagers, a time when everything was awkward and uncomfortable, they still seemed to fit together. Castiel looked forward to summers more than anything, wanting to escape the demands of high school and the pressure of attempting to be accepted by his peers, in order to see the one person who knew him better than anyone. The person who knew about his dislike for prime numbers, and would listen to him spout the guttural language of Enochian without even batting an eye.  To everyone else, Castiel didn’t seem to fit the mold. But to Dean, Castiel was just… Cas.  He had been expecting that summer to be the same as the last sixteen.  Yet instead, he’d watched his best friend turn into a nasty, arrogant asshole who had been ignoring his existence for weeks. A cool, callous person who was nothing like the friend he’d known his entire life. And finally, after days upon days of enduring it all, Castiel had had enough.  He knew where to find Dean. Despite being without a flashlight under the pitch black sky, his muscle memory led him through the rows of ripening vines all the way down to the creek. He could hear the quiet trickling of the water amongst the loud sounds of crickets. There, even in the darkness, he could see the silhouette of Dean, standing under the large willow tree on the edge of the property. It was Dean’s favourite spot on the entire farm, a fact Castiel had known about him since they were children. Soon, it had become more of their spot, where they spent most of their time during the summers.  As he approached, he heard Dean huff. “Figured you wouldn’t be sleeping,” he grumbled. “Did you think that maybe I snuck out to be alone?”
