If you were any kind of trans person in pretty much any time and place before the 2010s, and a relationship with a non-trans person went poorly, there was a very high chance you would be dead. Gato deleted her social media accounts this morning (tumblr, twitter, pillowfort) and explained on patreon it was for her mental health and safety (which... safety? hm) and someone here immediately claimed the gatobob url. which happens, it's tumblr. but this person is using it basically as a callout center.

the callout seems to be about an incident that happened in the patreon exclusive discord server before it got shut down a couple months ago. tldr according to this person, someone (a mod?) made a racist comment towards someone, and gato apparently handled the situation poorly and neither her or the mods apology were really that great. I was in the server as a lurker more than anything, but I don't remember being there when this happened.

other people sending in asks to this new gatobob account have also been calling her out for xenophobia, but I have a feeling that's looking a little bit too much into statements she's made about her games being redistributed in Russia and Spain specifically if i recall correctly.

this new blog is demanding gato and the aforementioned mod properly apologize for their behaviour, but in my opinion, this is a really weird and bad way to go about it. Smart to use her url as a way to boost the problem, but... I haven't seen any solid evidence besides some very vague screenshots, none of them including the racist remarks (the screenshots they've posted so far definitely aren't good responses or apologies if they ARE linked to this incident, and it should have been taken seriously) And the victim from the racism incident is NOT the person running the new gatobob account, so it feels very weird to me that this person is taking it upon themselves to stir everyone up and demand things from gato and the mod.

as far as I can tell, gato hasn't said anything about this on patreon, although she's likely taking her separation from social media very seriously. If she is aware (and I'm sure she's getting plenty of DMs about this on patreon), she'll likely make a post there addressing it in the next couple days, but that's just speculation.

I'm keeping a mostly neutral stance in this whole thing, but I'm encouraging people to not interact with this new gatobob account. There's nothing we can really do; they aren't impersonating her, posting anything against ToS as far as Im aware, and people have been hoarding urls for years. Just... listen and learn, I think is all I can suggest. Form your own opinions, but don't go on a witch hunt about it, if that makes any sense.

hey fellas and folks i have been meaning to write something up about this but haven't known where to start or where i'll end up. but i DO feel like it deserves addressing.

i really love this niche. i found a home in it during a very difficult time in my life, and have found many friends and lasting irl connections from the writings shared and conversations had. this place is so incredibly, INCREDIBLY dear to me. despite going through many horrors (tm) while in this community, i continue to stay because there is a lot about it that i love.

however, in the last... i don't know, year or so? there has been such an abundance of discourse, gossip and drama both publicly and privately that has exhausted me to no end. these things have always existed, they always will, but in the past year they have felt so draining and despairing that it has made finding the same comfort and joy in this community is hard. a lot of times, impossible!

one of the things that genuinely makes me SO sad is the tags. i made most of my lasting friendships in this niche but seeing a writing in the tags that i enjoyed and dming the author and shouting together. i have found so many great writers in the tags, and i still crawl around them today looking for fic!! HOWEVER. i find it difficult, not just because of the abundance of vague smut-related comphet posts with a slew of character names underneath from unrelated fandoms (to each there own but it isn't a posting style i enjoy!) but moreso because of the INSANE number of posts by antis that get thrown into the tags. main tags, character tags, x reader tags. it is so deeply disheartening to be looking for fic to enjoy and get jump scared by a posts saying horrible things about those who enjoy dark content. respectfully if you're above the age of eighteen and looking for writing on tumblr dot gov, i HIIIIGHLYY recommend using your literacy to first read ANY article or study summary about human psychology and sexuality and why fantasy does not equal what someone actual desires! signed a sex-repulsed ace spec mf who writes and enjoys smut. hate to use myself as example, but i hate even more to see folks in the tags be puritanical and pro-censorship under the guise of progressive ideology.

i want to say that there are parties within this niche that are CONSISTENTLY at the center of drama and conflict. no matter what fandom, no matter the url changes and lurking, they are there and its the same mfs. this is a complete vague, as i'm sure the parties in involved in the targeted harassment and ensuing drama do not know who i am, nor know that i know. but i DO <3, and so do plenty of other writers in our niche who have politely blocked and left you alone. do us all a fucking favor and do the same, instead of instigating harassment and being hateful cunts.

in this vein, in my closer circle, i know that these events (especially in the last six months) have caused folks to become conspiratorial and assume bad faith. i understand this is a protective measure because folks have gone through the wringer. however it makes me so sad to see what is often folks who likely do not know any context or horrors of the community, be painted so poorly in casual conversations when most of the time, communication is made to create a connection, not to start a fight.

i find myself reflecting on WHY i have come to not feel comfortable in this community. why i don't enjoy writing the same way, why i don't feel the same security i once felt, why i get so damn nervous to post a silly thought or thirst on main, and i find myself coming back to these experiences and the subsequent fear that follows. perhaps i am a weak-hearted coward, but i find it hard to find joy when i feel surrounded by constant negativity and genuine cruelty. it is hard to want to share any of myself when i am so deeply aware that whether it is strangers or people i have become close to, what i enjoy and what i choose to express and share can be so easily twisted into something it is not.

i know it would be easier if i had a thicker skin, or felt secure enough that this didn't bother me, but part of the core problem is that this community has made me insecure. it's a loop. it is one that makes me genuinely sad, as this place once felt so much like home. i know it still can be, but it certainly won't be sitting here, starting at blank documents and text posts wondering to myself 'why can't i just put words on paper' while i have the cortisol levels of a prey animal.

i'm not sure if other folks have felt similarly, or find themselves in the same point. however if you do, or you find yourself resonating, here's to feeling seen 🥂

some rambling thoughts about A Certain Videogame that is releasing soon (largely game-neutral and fandom-negative)

because. listen. there are a lot of things that I could criticise Dragon Age for. Inquisition was my biggest disappointment in gaming, even bigger than BG3 because with BG3 I was on the "I expected nothing and was still let down" mindset, whereas with DAI I was genuinely looking forward to it & felt like they did not deliver on any of the promises they made. there are a lot of things they have handled poorly. the ongoing plot about the elven gods is extremely unsatisfying & feels like a total cop-out and a loss of what made the world interesting in the first place.

but some people are approaching their criticism the wrong way IMO. because—alright I don't want to get into drama with anyone or bring drama to anyone so I won't be screenshotting OP's URL here, but this statement is just. outrageously ridiculous.

uh. no? it really is not that easy??? where are these texts coming from, pray tell? that shit doesn't sprout from the ground fully-formed. who's writing them? who's voicing them (unless we're meant to assume that you want all reactivity to be contained within codex entries)? even for interactive fiction games, where literally all you have is writing with no voice work or mocap work or whathaveyou involved, keeping track of these variables is extremely tough and time-consuming work. (source: I am writing one. unpublished as of yet, but I am writing it.) this is such a weirdly reductionist way of approaching the topic, especially in light of what we know has been going on at BW—they fired a large portion of the writers, including Mary fucking Kirby (which should be more concerning to us as players than a lack of reactivity, btw), there's clearly Issues going on there that encompass the whole company, there's a lack of funding or at least severe issues with how they're handling their funding, there's a lack of care for the people who have worked there for decades, etc etc.

is the lack of reactivity a problem? yeah I guess? maybe? but not for the reasons OP is saying, and it most definitely cannot be solved in the way OP is proposing. reactivity isn't a switch you turn on or off. and a reactivity like OP mentions would just make the world feel wide but shallow; things are acknowledged, but nothing comes out of them. there's a throwaway line of text, and that's that. because the alternative involves branching paths, cameos, different solutions to quests or different dialogue trees, etc etc, all of which is, again, a LOT of work, it's not something an intern can pull off in a day.

and like. alright. not to play devil's advocate here because I am, by and at large, hugely disenchanted with this franchise, and although I will be playing DATV (not that they'll be seeing a cent from me lol) just out of curiosity and sunk cost fallacy, I do not have high hopes for it. BUT.

Origins released in 2009. DA2 released in 2011. Inquisition—the latest entry in the franchise—released in 2014. that's a whole fucking decade in-between the third and fourth installments. and something that I think a lot of people online fail to understand is that the vast majority of gamers do not engage in fandom-type activities. we are a minority. a loud, outspoken minority, but a minority in the end. a LOT of people just play the game for what it is, then shelf it and don't think about it until the next one comes out (if it ever does). in this context I think that "making great use of the medium" would fall more along the lines of making sure there is proper reactivity within the game itself—meaning: let's NOT have another "human NPC humansplains Dalish history to my Dalish elf protag" moment—and not making callbacks to games from 10+ years ago, because. guys. we have to accept it. a LOT of the people who are gonna be playing this game won't have played DAO/DA2, or even DAI. a LOT of the people who are gonna be playing this game won't remember shit about the previous games. because a decade has passed. (if we're counting from DAI. otherwise we're looking at 15 years.)

especially when people start complaining about stuff like "what do you MEAN the choice of who we left in the Fade isn't relevant"—we were told that person's not coming back. like I could understand being upset at, IDK, your Inquisitor's romance choice (which btw does seem like their way of catering to the fandom part of the playerbase, but I digress) being more relevant than who is currently ruling Orlais, but if you're upset about the Fade thing you only have yourself to blame. we've known for years that character's Not Coming Back. the devs were very straightforward about that. ultimately it's not their fault if you've headcanoned your way around that statement. which like, don't get me wrong, I am all for headcanons, but when you have a headcanon you need to accept the fact that canon probably will contradict it eventually. your city now but also don't expect the devs to buy building permissions in your city, y'know?

but yeah. as I was saying. 10-15 years. most of the choices are gonna mean absolute jack shit to new (and a lot of returning!!) players, so at a certain point it makes sense that they had to make, like, a strategic choice of what to include and what to set aside. and of course it's a bummer for those of us who have been playing since DAO! I wanted mentions of my HOF, of Kieran, etc etc, there's a lot that makes me go "aww man". but also I think that people need to start acknowledging the fact that ultimately there are limits to what can and can't be done within the frame of one game that is being released, again, 10 years after the previous entry.

I mean tbh at this point I feel they'd be better served by having their next game be the first installment of a completely new franchise / IP. I can understand why they didn't make that choice. but it feels they'd be better off that way. having to deliver cameos and reactivity to Every Single Goddamn Choice Made In 3 Games The Oldest Of Which Is 15 Years Old is kind of a Sisyphean task that bogs the actual game down IMO

to sum it up I feel like I honestly just have a lot of misdirected anger at how fo4 isn't like, more fleshed out in its queerness. it's frustrating, new vegas had a lot of queer stuff and fleshed out identity and I went into fo4 kind of expecting east coast new vegas with better graphics and i did not get that and it was incredibly disappointing. fo4 did not feel as much as I was the target audience. (this is not fo4 bashing, i still love the game). The queer characters didn't really **get** to be queer outside of player interactions, like how the other person said. they didn't get to have previous relationships or awakenings or talk about how it's affected their politics or their relationships with other faction members or even within their own faction. and that frustrated the shit out of me. my problem was less that they weren't queer, it was that it felt to me that it wasn't queer enough because it wasn't human enough and I expressed that poorly and in a biased/bigoted way, which was shitty of me. there's no excuse for that. what I listed for was a reason I said that, but it wasn't an excuse and it doesn't excuse what I said.

It's fine!! Like I said, I know a lot of people have different opinions on it and mine is just "I'll take what I can get", I honestly don't care much about lazy writing as I would if it was downright awful (stereotypical, harmful, etc)

And honestly, yeah. Fallout 4 in general has an issue where a ton of the writing and the game in general feels unfinished, like how Preston has "chat" instead of "talk" in his speech wheel and you get like, four chances to flirt with Curie instead of the usual two with most of the other companions. To me that shows the companions in general are very unfinished so I'm surprised we got the option to romance them at all, let alone have the option to do it regardless of the sole survivors gender

Generally I think it's just an issue with Bethesda trying to push their game as a product and not a story. Too much focus on mechanics like weapon and armor building and settlement building and not enough on fleshing out the world and its characters like you would've seen in other games. But that's something I could rant about in general for ages

Tl;dr — Bethesda sort of dropped the ball with most of the writing for Fallout 4 so I'll still take their "lazy" queer inclusion over nothing. Glad you stuck around to listen to my reasoning lol

Music really gets to me. I grew up really immersed in religion and so many of our prayers are "sung" rather than said aloud, and so the way I learned the history of my faith is through music. I find myself closest to the Divine when I am listening to music, and growing up as part of an Abrahamic faith, I do resonate with Christian allegory because those are stories I remember being sung during majlis too. Every prayer I remember is because it was sung to me when I was learning it, and to this day, I keep those same tunes.
