Tony/Brooklyn & Lynn/Manhattan going on vacation, Lynn said she’d also help carry bags
alas. Anyways they’re in a Leyendecker color study I did & that I am very proud of how it came out ! Tony & Lynn are only married for legal purposes cause of the 1898 amalgamation of NYC (which gives us 5 boroughs).
Also I haven’t talked about the boroughoes in ages! I’ve been very focused on my Alfred & states lore that I haven’t touched my NYC lore đŸ˜â€ïž my OG lore. I’ll share some major changes and other thoughts below the cut. Also scroll the bottom for a little doodle of the boroughs :D
I do love my borough ocs dearly they’re my oldest babies (9/10 years and going ❀). And I love working on their lore BUT I feel a lot of the depth of their lore can be better discussed if I also work on lore at a state (Jennie/ New York State) and a national (Alfred/USA) level. Don’t worry I haven’t casted them aside, just cooking and learning new things as I work on Jennie & Alfred so I can better understand how different relationship dynamics impact each borough (especially as Lynn/Manhattan is basically their boss).
Before I delve into major changes in my lore, for newer folks, I’m gonna give a brief description of each borough oc:
Manaháhtaan “Lynn Cooper” / Manhattan borough is essentially the “boss” of all the boroughs. She’s born slightly before European colonization to Ms. Munsee Lenape and Mr. Mohican. For various reasons, she’s not particularly close to her parents nowadays. Lynn is a bit like a princess. She expects only the finest things in life, and she’s known to be perhaps a bit greedy and definitely cut-throat ambitious and will squash you like a bug if she deems you unworthy, but she’s quite charming. Her loud, bold, intense, no nonsense, but with perhaps a flirtatious smile makes her someone people wanna be around. She’s close friends with her fellow boroughs, Jennie/ New York State, and Alfred/ USA.
Anthonij “Tony” Cohen/ Brooklyn is a proud man who is always been rather peeved his best friend and greatest rival is essentially his boss and his legal wife, but he can’t ever really hate her. However, Tony will absolutely dig in his heels and give Lynn a hard time like pretending he’s a separate city still. His gregarious nature, and his interests in many topics from fashion to politics makes him someone you want to get know better. On another note, Tony was born to human parents during the New Netherland period, and he’s of African-American and Ashkenazi Jewish descent. Tony began to connect more with Judaism in the late 1800s specifically Reform Judaism. Tony is dating Andy/Queens, and he likes hanging out with his friends (and also making fun of them). Tony is always a bit peeved at Jennie for making him and Lynn marry, but they mostly get along, and they often celebrate Jewish holidays together (alongside with Jennie’s sister Elise/ New Jersey). Tony is also good friends with Alfred.
Andrew “Andy” Perez/ Queens was born to human parents some point during the late 1800s and is of Dominican and Chinese (probably Cantonese) descent. He’s a rather reserved man. He does have a bit of a bitch face, but he’s honestly quite friendly if you get him talking. He enjoys a more quiet pace of life. You’ll find him hanging around his neighborhoods, playing chess or helping folks out or just yapping. During the summer, you’re highly likely to find him at Rockaway beach catching some waves.
Rodrick “Rodrigo” Madden/ The Bronx was born to human parents in the late 1800s and he’s of Puerto Rican and Irish descent. Nowadays, he does try to act like Mr. Tough guy, but that’s to hide the fact he doesn’t wanna be hurt again. He’s not been treated well by Lynn as a friend in the past and he somewhat blames his more naive and rather naturally friendly nature as the reason why. But Rodrigo is a sweetheart. His heart has almost always been in the right place. He’ll give you the clothes off his back even if it hurt him. He has a pet calico cat named Teddy that was once a barn cat from he used to be farmer (also I randomly decided the cat also immortal cause I can’t mentally kill off this cat).
François “Frank” Russo/Staten Island was born to human parents during the New Netherland period and is of Walloon and Italian (probably Neapolitan) descent. He can be rather intense especially when he’s passionate about something, and often thinks of himself as the center of universe. He may off as an annoying asshole but if you put aside the self centered attitude, the extreme bouts of passion and stubbornness, and maybe his lack of manners- you’ll find he’s not a bad guy.
Also why borough ocs, Egg? Uh cause I can. When I made them, no one else was doing this and I felt a New York City character can’t be explained in just a character alone plus culturally and politically the boroughs are actual entities thus for me mentally justifies why I could personify them.
OK also one of the more major changes to the lore is that Lynn & Tony are now legally married due to the 1898 amalgamation. As I mentioned numerous times on this blog, I want to explore more serious and complicated themes especially as I’ve gotten older. I now interpret the amalgamation a bit like a marriage between New York City (then just Lynn) and the city of Brooklyn. They’re still friends/rivals. Also Tony is gay. But I’m interested in exploring the idea of these personifications being public figures and how aspects maybe like tokenization, homophobia, misogyny can also impact them. I’ll expand on this another time as I don’t want to take away from the point of this post.
The other major update is that Andy/Queens & Rodrigo/the Bronx only come into existence as aeterni (borrowing term from a pirenaia on twitter) when they’re older kids and at some point btwn 1870s-1890s. This just changes their aging timeline a bit is all. I made this change cause I really want my borough ocs to reflect the inhabitants and groups that have had significant influences on the culture of this city. As Rodrigo is Puerto Rican / Irish in his ethnic background and Andy is Chinese / Dominican, the most significant beginnings of the migration of these groups to the city started in the late 1800s (picked up x1000 post wwii). It wasn’t like impossible before but I felt the explanation was too loose ++ the Bronx & Queens were just beginning to urbanize at this period & beforehand I’m gonna argue did not have much of a major cultural thing. I need both a major cultural aspect and some sort of political aspect to create ocs. Alsooo eastern Bronx as a character no longer exists in this universe- Frances rip 🙏
hehe that’s all (for now)- here’s a boroughoes doodle

Alternatives
We just spent an hour on the phone, Someone and I, trying to think of alternatives to the PR catastrophe I analyzed at length. We almost ended up shouting at each other, too (never mind, the silly cow/pretentious twat is part of the charm & dynamic). I wanted a male POV. A witty (you think I am intelligent? thank you, but meet Someone), sophisticated male tells us (in italics, I took notes, because I am an idiot, of course):
Savile Row. Not Patagonia ('he ain't no Ranulph Fiennes'). 'If he needs to get an Italian refresh: Rubinacci, in Milan'.
Aspen (US winter)/Cortina d'Ampezzo/Zermatt/Courchevel (European winter) or Positano/Biarritz/Costa Navarino (European summer). Not Mexico (tacky past choices), nor Hawaii (proven multiple jinx).
'What do you mean, shirtless pics on the beach?'
'Nevis? Huh? Nevis? Pfff. If it's about rum, Martinique and Guadeloupe, all the way.'
The Independent/The Times. Not Scottish Daily Express, or any other dignified clickbait. It should not be that difficult, he already made it to NYT. 'He'll never please The Guardian, whatever he might do'.
Monocle/The New Yorker. Not Departures and if, for some obscure contractual reason, it has to be Departures -' please, for the love of all that's holy, not that woman'!
No international politics. If he absolutely must, he should limit himself to the human rights/humanitarian side of things and to big NGOs / UN / UNICEF endorsed messages. 'Better be politically vanilla than risk another major blunder' (neither Someone, nor I are politically vanilla - but then, we are not people constantly living under the rabid scrutiny of a thirsty fanbase).
A real one-person, bigger format travel show, SRH does.... [insert whatever you want in here, I and many like me, will watch]. No coat-tailing, dagger winding partner. More content and less silliness, please. He's 43. 'Ours is a very adventurous generation, we practically invented flashpacking'. And I have to agree: the best way to travel is, IMHO, to have it rough at the Breeze Guest House in Moulmein and then soothe yourself at Rangoon's Strand. For example.
No more silly lies. 'I bet the farm and the horses there is no house in LAX'. And I, for one, can even understand if he still needs to do it for a while. But please, don't overdo it. There's nothing worse than to watch a genuinely good guy desperately trying to lie and gloriously failing at it.
Oh, well. We did not spend an hour on the phone just to offer this kind of unsolicited advice. It just goes to prove how easily you can switch narratives and mend it all. All it takes is a first step. And some drastic changes. The sooner, the better.

By Letters, Words, and Names.
Tumblr media
One of the stuff I have been dealing with recently is the weight of letters. We always use words, names, and letters in whatever shape they come, no? It's the kind of situation where people are not thinking about what they're saying, writing, or putting into words. Then we go into rituals and say SABAOTH HEAR ME.
If we are constantly unaware of the words we use everyday, how do we expect the worlds to be aware of us when we want to be aware of our own words? In the beginning was the word, and this word is the binding of time and space, the difference between joke and an insult is all about the right time and the right space. If we can create the time and space with stories, we can bind the time and space with words and bind the words with time and space. Written charms binds the word in time and space, spoken charm binds the time and space in words. There is no so-called astral travel taking place, no spirits summoned in triangles, nor any elaborate prayers spoken. the letters are powers, the words are the forms of that powers, and the name is the connection to this world. Let's imagine this scene and I would like you the reader to try this by reading it silently then whispering then outloud: "I awaken to the world of truth, (your name) the hot summer, rays of sun, and the heat radiating from beach. My legs in the sea of God's majesty I take a breath and see the reflection on the water, like glittering pearls. Shaddai, how great is the world. Blessings of Gabriel wash out the dross of my soul and body, make a me a vessel of divinity today and forever. Amen"
A different one, slightly adversarial effect but it also push someone a bit out of normal time/space. "a Cloudy afternoon, the sky is white, the sea is cold, water up your neck, serene. A hand reaches and hold your leg but no one to be seen. People far, Morning Star, undine and healing but no one is heard." One about the moon: "Moon of April, Moon of June, Moon of Magic, Moon of Dunes, under your rays we receive your lights cold, hot, and warm. Reflect the Sun, Reflect the Sun, Reflect the Sun" if these words can do so much, how much do the words we read on screen, we scroll and scroll mindlessly consuming this or that kind of media. In reality all we need is to have an ounce of balance to it all. People often are careful about what they eat or diet of this or that, what about what you hear? read? listen? etc. Your stomach isn't the only thing that need a diet ;) Of course these are charms written/spoken by me regarding my own rituals, experiences, and stuff I went through and they wouldn't have the same weight as the ones practiced by African, Arab, European folk practitioners for hundred of years. All I am trying to provide here is way and method we can look at strength of words, power of words, and so on. At the end of this I want to give that you too have this power of weaving, writing, and breathing life into your words as all the word of powers, all the prayers, and so on are from the Heart. Let us give thank to god for being given the gift of speech and praying, and maybe buy a prayer book or MAKE a prayer book for you and spirits near you, what if some spirits want to pray but have no access to a mouth then maybe you can help them :D <3 When we choose our words, our letters, and our intentions carefully then the world respect us for respecting the Word. I leave you with something to think about:

Can’t stop thinking about best friend Mase begging for you to come on his family holiday with him and everyone but you knows that he’s so in love with you and when you’re all out he’s fighting off every girl saying he has a girlfriend and just sits there like a grump watching you be charmed by some random European man who is nothing like him and his whole fam just has to sit there begging him to make a move to put everyone out of their misery
oooh I love a good friends to lovers concept
this is quite a long one đŸ€
maybe they can all see that he loves you and they can see that you love him as well, they all know that you both feel the same but you’re both too scared to admit it because you’re worried the other doesn’t feel the same and you don’t want to jeopardise the friendship đŸ„ș
Like you said, Mason wouldn’t really be giving any other girls the time of day, maybe having a conversation with one or two when you’re out but none of them make him feel a fraction of the way you do and he’d much rather be spending his time with you
But then maybe a guy comes up to you one day when you’re on the beach or out for lunch somewhere and starts very obviously flirting with you which makes Mason a little upset but he doesn’t show it, not wanting to interfere even if it is killing him inside but then Lewis notices the way he’s looking at you and has a little chat with him, convincing him to maybe not say anything whilst you’re out but to have a conversation with you that night, to tell you about how he’s very obviously feeling because he wants his brother to be happy, and he wants to put you both out of your misery
Maybe you’ve got plans to go for a meal that evening and Mason makes up an excuse to not go, claiming that he has a headache and isn’t feeling great after staying in the sun all day, he’s hoping that you’ll stay with him and you of course do, not wanting him to be on his own, so it ends up just being the two of you in the villa 👀
and maybe he doesn’t get a chance to even tell you before something happens 👀 soon after everyone has left you realise that he’s actually feeling completely fine, it confuses you why he’s lie about not feeling well but you choose not to question it, happy for some alone time with him finally đŸ€ he convinces you to have a little swim with him, so you’re both just swimming around in the pool, the sun in setting and you’ve got some music quietly playing in the background
it feels so so romantic, the atmosphere perfect and you look so incredibly beautiful in your bikini so he can’t help but swim closer to you, gabbing your waist under the water and pulling you closer to him, your legs instinctively wrapping around his waist as your hands land on his shoulders
you don’t think anything of it at first, physical touch is something that comes so naturally to both of you, and cuddling is something that’s quite common in your friendship, but there’s something about the way he’s looking at you, he has a different look in his eyes and you can’t look away, the eye contact is speaking louder the words and you think you’re imagining it until he slowly leans forward
he gives you time to pull back, not wanting to force you into anything but once you realise his intentions you cup his cheek and speed up the process, just wanting to feel his lips on yours and when they eventually touch your whole entire body lights up, butterflies erupting in your tummy and it has to be the best kiss you’ve ever had 🩋
maybe you dont necessarily address what it means for your relationship until you get home, you continue the rest of the holiday without actually admitting your feelings for each other but you become a lot more touchy and are basically acting like you’re in a relationship, kissing and cuddling, sleeping in his room every night instead of your own and to everyone else you look like bf and gf but deep down you’re still worried that mason doesn’t actually feel the same, and that the sun and being away with other couples is just getting to his head, it’ll break your heart if that’s the case but you don’t want to ruin the rest of the holiday so you don’t speak about it until you return home
When you land he doesn’t want to say goodbye to you quite yet so he invites you back to his which is where you end up speaking about everything. It turns out that obviously you had nothing to worry about, he reassures you that he feels the same and the next thing you know you’ve got another trip planned, just for the two of you so that you can spend some quality time alone with your new boyfriend

okay so I just saw the London production of Rebecca and BOY DO I HAVE SOME THOUGHTS
- score sounded rich and full (orchestra must be huge!!!!) and singing was magnificent throughout
- the English lyrics swung between Really Solid and then abruptly Bad depending on the song, with some truly bizarre structural choices in places (e.g. 'doch sie hat mich verraten' became 'utterly betrayed me' which was awkward and spread over too many syllables it made me wince). BUT overall the bones of the translation are there, it just needs more time and work...
- Danny was the best thing in it, Kara Lane absolutely killed it, I can't wait to go back and see her again so I can analyse every second of her performance; she had to sell some really botched lyrics and did such a good job selling them with her performance; she was cold, defiant, unhinged, vengeful, and eventually utterly broken. obsessed 10/10 would die for her.
- dear God the set was an unprofessional disaster. IKEA meets cardboard walls meets local am dram. I have literally seen village pantos with better sets. Rebecca's room had a bed with plain purple sheets, a backdrop with abstract green swirls (?), and a desk. literally just send someone to the nearest charity shop and buy a couple of candlesticks and some tasseled cushions, for goodness sake, it'll cost you ten quid. I know they have a tight budget but they're going to get laughed off the West End with a set like this.
- the lighting made everything Worse. it was flat and washed out but somehow kept putting the faces in shadow so you couldn't see them??? the colours and depth of the European productions are SO distinct, why are we lighting everything like it's a rehearsal room ffs
- Ich was a darling, very sweet and vulnerable with the voice of an angel, I wanted to close my eyes multiple times just to listen to her songs. she full-on sobbed during the beach scene with Maxim.
- costumes were okay, a bit grungy??? I really miss Ich having some brighter colours after she gains confidence and comes into her own, BUT Danny looked bomb they gave her a beautifully tailored black dress and Kara Lane has a figure to die for so that was 👏👏👏
- Maxim was great, but he looked about 20 and wore his heart on his sleeve??? very charming and funny and flirty which is...not what I was expecting, and honestly not an interpretation that totally works for the story, but he gave a strong performance and absolutely attacked Kein Laecheln, it was very very powerful
- no staircase, no fire, but the cast worked their butts off to ACT the fire and honestly full respect they did a really good job. I felt their panic and terror so vividly. Danny didn't appear onstage until the last 5 seconds of the song, and we only saw her from behind as she started up the stairs...bizarre timing??? but maybe an honest mistake as it was a preview performance
- blocking was very different in places. I liked some of it (e.g. Danny dressing up Ich in nightgown, lipstick, and doing her hair during Rebecca II was intensely creepy but perfect) but other things were a bit odd (e.g. Maxim being super kissy and cutesy and physical with Ich in a way that felt more teenage boy that older English gentleman lol)
- there are LOTS of structural changes, new songs, and things that have been cut (like Danny's entrance...criminal actually) but I'll make a separate post about those
send me an ask if you want to know about anything in particular, happy to provide details!

Hello! I wanted to ask you a question about the brand name, cause I'm a foreigner so I didn't know there was an American Riviera, only ever heard of the french one. What does it sound like to an American? Is that a place known for having orchards or produce of any kind? Like some products usually have the name of origin in their brand (thinking about the duchy of Lancaster for instance). It sounds like a mouthful to me, like something trying to be high end and traditional, but since it's new it just comes off as pretentious I guess. Thank you!
So I'm in America - on the East Coast in New England (Massachusetts) & I never knew that Santa Barbara was referred to as the American Riviera -- I DID learn yesterday that it's a trademarked phrase (by the Santa Barbara Tourism Board, I think) so it's just a marketing thing.
I think you're exactly right - she's trying to convey that this is upscale and elegant. When Americans think of the Riviera (the European varieties, lol) we - or at least I - think of luxurious vacation, towns with a lot of old-world charm, beaches, exclusivity... so she's definitely trying to convey that it's higher end. But I would never think of an orchard - in either Europe or America... ? But - the name American Riviera Orchard doesn't flow. It's too long, too many syllables, too cumbersome, and ... it doesn't mean anything. It doesn't elicit anything except maybe some confusion?
Her branding is beautiful - it always is, to be honest (credit where credit is due, I love her aesthetic... although so wish she'd iron her clothes and get them slightly more fitted lol) - but to me it feels like she wanted to name it America Riviera, realized that it was a trademarked name, and slapped the word Orchard to the end of it lol.

Turn Your Home Into an Instant Vacation: A Guide to Creating an At-Home Escape Shaina Tranquilino June 19, 2024
Tumblr media
Life can get hectic, and sometimes the idea of a vacation seems like a distant dream. But what if I told you that you could create an instant vacation right in the comfort of your own home? Whether it's a busy schedule, budget constraints, or just a longing for a little relaxation, turning your home into a vacation destination is easier than you think. Here’s how you can transform your space into a haven of relaxation and escape without ever leaving your doorstep.
Set the Scene: Create a Vacation Atmosphere
1. Choose Your Destination
Start by deciding on the vibe you want to emulate. Are you dreaming of a tropical beach, a cozy mountain retreat, or a chic European city? Once you’ve decided, you can start to tailor your home’s ambiance to match.
Tropical Paradise: Bring in the sun with bright, warm colors and plenty of greenery. Think palm leaves, bamboo, and floral prints. You could even add some tiki torches or fairy lights for that extra touch.
Mountain Retreat: Opt for cozy, rustic elements with lots of wood, soft throws, and warm lighting. A fireplace or candles can add a perfect touch of ambiance.
European Escape: Channel the charm of a quaint European village with vintage decor, floral patterns, and perhaps some classic European music playing in the background.
2. Create the Right Ambiance
Mood lighting is key to setting the vacation tone. Here are a few ideas:
Candles and Fairy Lights: These can create a warm, inviting glow. Scented candles can also add an extra layer of relaxation with aromas like lavender, ocean breeze, or jasmine.
Music Playlist: Curate a playlist that matches your destination. Whether it's the sounds of the ocean, jazz for a Parisian feel, or mountain breeze tunes, music can transport you to another place.
Transform Your Space: Little Changes Make a Big Difference
3. Decorate with a Purpose
Small touches can make a huge difference. Here are some ideas:
Textiles and Fabrics: Swap out your usual cushions, throws, and bed linens for ones that match your vacation theme. For a tropical vibe, think bright and bold; for a cozy retreat, go for plush and warm.
Artwork and Posters: Hang some artwork or posters that evoke your chosen destination. It’s a great way to keep the vacation spirit alive.
4. Set Up a Special Space
Designate a spot in your home as your vacation corner. It could be a reading nook, a balcony garden, or even a cozy corner with a hammock or a comfy chair. This space should be your go-to spot for relaxation and unwinding.
Indulge Your Senses: Taste, Smell, and Touch
5. Cook Up a Storm
Food is a big part of any vacation. Try cooking dishes from your chosen destination. Here are some ideas:
Tropical: Think tropical fruit salads, coconut curries, or fresh seafood.
Mountain Retreat: Rustic dishes like stews, grilled meats, or hearty soups.
European: Pasta, cheese boards, or pastries can transport you to the streets of Rome or Paris.
6. Scent Your Home
Scents can be incredibly evocative. Use essential oils, candles, or diffusers to bring the scents of your destination to life.
Tropical: Coconut, pineapple, and mango scents.
Mountain Retreat: Pine, cedarwood, and vanilla.
European: Lavender, rosemary, and fresh bread.
7. Pamper Yourself
Create a spa-like experience at home. Set up a bath with some relaxing bath salts, light some candles, and play soothing music. Treat yourself to a facial or a DIY spa day with masks and scrubs.
Make It Last: Keep the Vacation Spirit Alive
8. Stay in the Moment
Turn off your phone and disconnect from work emails and social media. Dedicate this time to relaxation and enjoying your home-turned-vacation spot.
9. Keep the Vibe Going
Consider making some of these changes permanent. A little vacation flair can make everyday life feel more exciting and relaxing.
Your Home, Your Vacation
Turning your home into an instant vacation spot is not just about creating a new environment; it’s about making time for yourself and enjoying the little things that make you happy. Whether it’s a few hours in a tropical paradise or a weekend in a cozy cabin, your home can be the perfect retreat. So, why wait? Start planning your at-home vacation today and give yourself the break you deserve!

13 of the Best Mens Swim Trunks
We received so many questions about what swim trunks we were wearing on our recent European trip, we thought it would be easier to link them all in one place! Below, we’re sharing our favorite swim trunks we brought with us on the trip, plus 11 other options:
American Eagle Colorblock (30% off!) These are PJ’s favorite new swim trunks:
Hollister Light Blue Stripe. I have been looking for some light blue striped trunks for so long and these fit the bill perfectly:
Vuori Kore Shorts. We have two or three pairs of these and use them interchangeably as workout shorts and trunks:
Old Navy Classic Black. Because a solid black pair is always a good idea:
Old Navy StretchTech. PJ bought these for the trip and used them as shorts for walking around Portofino but they worked perfectly as swimming trunks as soon as we got to this cute little beach:
Bonobos Boardwalk (on sale!) How retro and charming are these?:
Lululemon Pool Short. These look so soft, and all of the different colors they come in are so fun:
J. Crew Stretch. I am officially in love with these, and they come in so many different styles and colors (though the below are my favorite!!):
Vuori Banks Hybrid More Vuori for the win!! These are their actual swim trunks, and I love the retro vibe they have:
H&M Classic Red. Just like a solid black pair, I feel like a pair of red trunks is just so classic and not just for lifeguards:
SILKWORLD Colorful Swim Trunks. The most affordable and straightforward of the bunch!:
Abercrombie Pride Pull On Seersucker. I saw these and immediately wanted them. They’re so fun and a Pride apparel that isn’t cheesy or ugly. They’re so cute!:
Abercrombie Navy Blue Floral. Also loving these from Abercrombie. How good would they look at the beach against the white sand? (plus they come in so many more colors!):
