I'm not going to go in on all your points here but I want to talk about the student loans thing quick. Basically, Biden's stance on the student loan forgiveness was about the Public Student Loan Forgiveness program (PSLF) which is a program where if you do public service for 10 years and make all payments on time for all 10 years then you can have your qualifying loans forgiven.

This program was around before Trump and, when Trump got into office, people who were following the requirements of the PSLF and were at their 10 years to get their loans forgiven were suddenly getting denied in huge numbers. It was an extremely low percentage of people who were getting approved for their student loans to be forgiven. And, while they were waiting to be denied, they still had to pay their student loans. And then they would get denied. So lots of people were wasting 10+ years and a lot more money for these student loans to be forgiven.

So Biden's student loan promise wasn't about forgiving everyone's student loans en masse. It was actually about the PSLF and the people who were being denied when they followed every step under Trump and still had to stay at a lower income job while paying these loans off in the hope that they could get approved for their loans to be forgiven. When Biden got into office the number of approvals skyrocketed. So, a lot of student loans did get forgiven, just not in the way you knew because you didn't know the exact details of the issue that he was campaigning for.

And that's with all of his points. Biden actually is one of our most progressive presidents who did accomplish a lot of things. You just don't read the correct news sources.

im gonna be honest it's kind of hard to watch all the shit trump and his admin are pulling without getting even madder at biden for doing jack shit about his campaign promises. student loans, minimum wage, reproductive rights... and i know some picrew icon who voted for the first time last year is already rushing to the reblog button to write a YA protagonist monologue about how those would have been/were blocked by congress/the senate/inclement weather/etc. but the thing is that at this point i literally do not care about "established legal and political processes" and "working within the system", i just want my views enacted into law. which would be childish if it wasn't the exact strategy that has been working unbelievably well for republicans for the last decade!

i want to grab a democrat career politician by the shoulders and scream in their face: do something good for once in your god damn life! fuck "checks and balances", fuck "legal precedent", just keep packing the courts and gerrymandering districts and throwing shit at the wall until something sticks! fucking fight back god dammit! where's your dignity? your rage? your humanity? you're playing checkers against someone eating your pieces while adding their own to the board and you're trying to give an impassioned speech about how "they go low we go high" while they simultaneously piss on you and shoot your dog!

First of all :

I'm Areej I was an English teacher before war and everything change after October 7. Also I'm a creative writer at we are not numbers.

Also I am a mother of three children. We have lived through the war for a year and a half, and we have lost everything we own. My husband is a man who did not work before the war and even now. And I lost my job in teaching because of the current situation, the school was destroyed and many of my poor students was died by the missiles 😭

So i did not have a breadwinner or any source of income . But I didn't give up to teach so I volunteered to teach some students near my camp in IBM Rushed school. There where many family were displaced from the north of Gaza. Actually it was a good chance for me to know more people and to try to engage students with English after this bad war. I held many activities with the for fun and learning and they were happy for this great chance so I hope to return to have my project to enable more students to engage with my voluntury work. I hope you help me and understand my holy target for helping students in their education. 🙏🙏🙌💯

Your help also will also help me in rebuilding my own family home.

Today, after the war, the truce has entered its first phase in Gaza, and I now live in a tent and do not have a house after it was destroyed by missiles. I now ask you to help me rebuild my house. And buy basics for the daily essentials for my children and I need money so that we can stand up again and start again.

This war wasn't easy at all it has taken many friends at work, students and some of my colleagues at the university. They are almost ten souls I won't never forget . Their laughter, their presence, their love… all of it is gone, leaving behind memories that are both precious and painful. Every day, I carry the weight of their loss, but I also carry their spirit, which gives me the strength to keep going.

so i'm watching game changer season 6, and i wasnt expecting to see you on there! what was it like being on set and meeting everyone?

it was terrifying but super fun. i was notified maybe like 5 days before i was cast so luckily i didn't have much time to be anxious about it. i definitely almost said no but i promised myself a while ago to not shy away from scary or new experiences. sam texted me right after i turned in all my paperwork and was super encouraging and told me to just be myself

it was super cool doing the whole hair and makeup process, all the makeup artists were so kind and helped calm my nerves a lot! it was nice being cast with friends also. just talking with caldwell and nathan in the greenroom beforehand and hearing that they were also nervous made me feel more comfortable. i got to briefly meet oscar and ally since i believe they filmed the "second place" episode right before ours. they were lovely!

this entire thing truly played on so many of my fears. improv, being on camera, and then having to draw on a time crunch and be funny while being recorded at the same time. i texted some youtuber friends beforehand to ask for tips which really helped remind myself stay grounded. i weirdly wasn't too nervous during the actual games since i was so focused on trying to be funny. i did feel like i was gonna pass out every time we took a break tho LOL. it was really funny, during each break, sam kept walking up to me and ominously saying "someone you know is here" which also helped take my mind off of the nerves. i was like "do they know who my brother is? is jaymin about to show up on the show??" it was sarah natochenny which was also a super fun surprise. apparently sam didn't tell her i was gonna be on the show and just alluded to a "pokemon fanartist" being one of the contestants and she told me that she was just like "is it kiana" LMAOOO.

but again, it was sooooo much fun. i don't think i'd ever laughed so much. every challenge was hilarious and everyone was just having a good time. my favorite was definitely face painting for the kids. they were adorableeee and it was the one challenge where literally all my nerves melted away (i wanna be a mom someday and i love working with kids so i was livinggg).

despite the anxiety, i had an amazing time and would definitely do something like this again!

thinking about how threshold would have gone on other star treks. just spitballing here i’m taking suggestions:

original trek: would fit right in here honestly, no change

the animated series: it’s even weirder somehow. the evolved human salamanders are hot pink.

tng: we actually know what they’d do because they’ve had two episodes in this genre already, but with some key differences: a) the character who transmogrifies into a glowy gecko (geordi) is the only character on the show with no daddy issues whatsoever, and b) “genesis” hinges on the fact that even if you turn into a lizard, your babies will be born normal. of course if those babies were humans and not cats, by the end credits they’d have somehow winked out of existence or never been born at all or something. the j/p babyfic fans just can’t win.

deep space nine: they definitely aren’t abandoning those babies!!! instead the babies die and it’s the saddest thing you’ve ever seen

enterprise: in only four seasons this show somehow had TWO precedents for “we will care for these accidental weird babies in a cringefunny way until we find them a home with more appropriate caregivers” AND a “crewmembers evolved into something stupid but we fixed it” episode

discovery: this is the one show where i feel confident that they keep the lizard babies forever. unsure if the parents leave the show for a while to care for them or if they just have an off-screen salamander daycare on the ship now, but they reappear out of nowhere in the last two episodes of the season to save the universe

I think a lot of the people you'd associate with the "start a community garden! support local businesses! make zines!" posturing and who are at least nominally sympathetic to communism conceptualize of organizing as a series, or more specifically, a collection of broadly "good" actions that are possible in the short, short-medium term. And it is worth pointing out that this does not come from nowhere, it's a more extreme version of the mental shortcut essentially all organizers end up taking. Oftentimes, when you're working within a party or organization, there are a set of actions and activities that become routine, justified implicitly by their own frequency. This isn't necessarily a problem, but it can be one if left unacknowledged and unchallenged. Along the lines of this post, effective organizing is practical, yes, but based on a careful collective analysis of the external, political context and the internal, organizational realities, if you allow me the semi-correct dualism. We don't do things because we can and they're good, we do them because it's the best course of action to further the medium and long term political agenda of raising consciousness towards challenging the bourgeois' power.

So what I believe happens to those people I mentioned at the beginning of the post is that this fetishizing of the usual activities is so extreme there isn't even an actual concrete analysis of concrete reality at some point in the past to point to, and things are done because they appear to be good in some intuitive sense. For example, you might look at the Black Panthers' free school meals program and attempt to imitate it as closely as possible, instead of actually learning that the school meals program was correctly judged to be something that could really demonstrate the possibility and power of classist worker's organizations, to further their goal of eventually contesting the US' bourgeoisie, in the context of the situation of the US's schooling of poorer children. Much like reading theory, the point is not to learn about anecdotal events, but seeing how conclusions where reached that lead to actual victories, large and small.

Especially for those with the ailment of horizontalism, you'll encounter plenty of orgs mostly making post-hoc and hasty justifications for doing things for which there simply wasn't very much thought put into. Once again continuing on the ideas of that post I linked earlier, this happens because those same people do not have actual programs that can guide their own independent activity, instead substituting it with a long list of things they're against and concepts they abstractly support.

Obligatory round of disclaimers: Yes, sometimes people do bad things. Be specific about exactly who is doing what instead of ascribing it to some vague group of shadowy elites. Yes, sometimes things in society are bad. Learn to identify the root causes of complex social issues instead of assuming that they're actually extremely simple to fix and we're just not doing it because of some vague group of shadowy elites.
