more defiant spoilers
i lied, i was not enough of an adult to make myself get six hours of sleep and i had to read the whole book in less than twelve hours, apparently
i am proud of myself for not crying, though - came real close when they were doing the final skyward role call, and i thought i might when gran-gran had her noble last stand, but i saw that one coming so i was able to prepare myself
love that we got more looks into brade's head, and how she really was just.... spensa without a support system (which did not make any of their interactions any less homoerotic) - i'm a little sad at how anticlimactic her end was, but, well, sometimes a fight really is just hitting the other guy with their shields down and that's it
it's nice to see the emotional throughline of the series, now that it can be taken as a whole - grief sucks, but it's easier with people who understand and support you, and also oppressed peoples should unionize and rebel and seize the means of production (especially when they are the means of production)
i actually really love how the taynix and the delvers come to their own agreement completely separate from the races of people we know and understand, because yeah, they are both intelligent species, they don't need a referee or benefactor standing over them to be part of their decision
there's some details about what chet and m-bot were up to that i think i misread, so i'll have to contemplate those and pay attention on a reread at some point, but for now i have finished it, and i am pleased with the ending
(also thank you sanderson for confirming kimmalyn has a girlfriend, always good to have it in the source material rather than just confirming it off the page)
now i guess i get to look out for skyward legacy at some point? i also want to get a physical copy of the three skyward flight novellas - i have electronic copies but i wanna have physical ones too
overall, a good book - it seemed to be in a holding pattern sometimes, with people going 'oh what could the solution to this be???' when, like, it felt like they'd said the solution three times already, but maybe i was filling in the gaps with my own inferences, and there were many moments that felt surprising and well-earned, so all good in the end

Crossover Danuary Week Day 6
Prompt: DC
Summary: "Please don't tell me you have the fucking king of ghosts on speed dial."
This was originally supposed to be a lot angstier with an explanation as to how Bruce and Danny met but, uh, yeah that part wasn't willing to be written. So enjoy something more lighthearted instead!
Bruce had hoped— hoped, that he’d be able to return to Gotham without incident. But of course, that was too much to ask.
Batman had just returned from an off-world diplomacy mission with Wonder Woman, tired, sleep-deprived, and in desperate need to get a minimum of four hours of sleep in his king-sized bed. But as soon as he stepped into the Justice League HQ to give a brief mission report, he was met with trouble.
Trouble came in the form of half the League arguing and John Constantine nearly about to scream his head off, a worn book clutched in his hand.
He pinched the bridge of his nose through his cowl. The universe was testing his patience.
“Well,” Wonder Woman said, amused. “Will you do it, or shall I?”
“I got this.” He turned back to the room. “Quiet!”
The room was immediately silenced.
Wonder Woman raised an eyebrow. “Impressive.”
“Batman, Wonder Woman, you’ve returned!” Superman zipped from the center of the meeting room to the door, greeting the two of them.
“Kal, would you mind explaining what’s happened here?” Wonder Woman asked.
Superman glanced back at the rest of the room, before shifting his gaze back. “A new kind of enemy appeared a few days ago that’s been causing havoc. Its range of abilities is, in a word, vast. Flight, invisibility, some kind of density shifting, and some kind of green energy blasts. Most concerningly, it even has the ability to, ah, possess people. We have no way to counteract it.”
Constantine held his book up. “We do.”
“It’s a gamble, John, and you know it.”
“Well, what else can we do? You can’t even get near the damn thing unless you wanna risk getting possessed, and our other abilities mean shit when we can’t even hit it!”
Batman raised his hand to stop the argument before it could continue any further. “What solution are we talking about?”
Constantine grunted, opening the faded book towards the end. “Look, Zatanna and I did some digging and we think that these creatures could be ghosts.”
“Like Deadman?”
“Not like him, no. These ghosts—these spirits—are inhabitants of the Infinite Realms. The space between universes, the realm between time. They’re on a whole different level than other ghosts.”
Batman took the book and scrutinized the page. The words themselves were in Latin, and though he wasn’t fluent, he’s seen this spell before so he could tell what Constantine was planning. He snapped the book shut. “No. It won’t work.”
“Wha—” Constantine ripped the book from Batman’s grasp, face flushed. “How many times do I have to say that we don’t have any other choice! We can’t beat these ghosts, and they only listen to one person, and that is the Ghost King.”
He was too tired for this shit. “I didn’t say that summoning the Ghost King wasn’t a viable plan, all I’m saying is that the ritual would fail.”
“Oh, you’re suddenly an expert on magic now?”
Batman blinked. “The ritual calls for a summoning circle approximately twenty feet in diameter, with three runic lines and a twelve-pointed star all written with ‘freshly drawn human blood.’ Now, some of the people here are aliens, so they can’t donate blood. Others are metas, and while they’re human, we don’t know how their powers would affect ritual. You also need to consider that unless you’re willing to entrust this summoning circle to Flash, it would take you about two hours to draw it in its entirety, and by then the blood would have already dried, thereby reducing the spell’s effectiveness even further since you don’t have one of the king’s artifacts to tie him here.”
Constantine nearly dropped his cigarette. He took a step back, ruminating over his book. “Alright. Fair point. But what other alternative do we have?”
Batman pulled a green earpiece. “I could just call him.”
“Please tell me you don’t have the fucking King of Ghost’s number on speed dial.”
“I don’t have him on speed dial.” He pressed a series of numbers and held the phone to his ear. It took three rings before the call was accepted.
“Hey, B! Whatcha need?”
“One of your subjects managed to escape and it has colleagues on edge. I’d appreciate your assistance on this, Phantom.”
“What the— Ugh. I told those guys to at least keep their hauntings to Amity. I’ll be there as soon as I can. Where do you want me to meet you?”
“The Watchtower.”
A pause. “Is that the one in space?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll be there in ten.”
Batman hung up and pocketed his phone. “He said he’ll be here in ten minutes.”
The room burst into chaos.
Aquaman asked if there were to be any special procedures they needed to follow to greet a royal.
Flash babbled a mile a minute about getting to meet the king of the dead.
Superman asked Wonder Woman about how their mission went.
Constantine seemed to be running on his last thread of sanity.
Batman pointedly ignored all of this, instead, opening his communicator to check on the situation in Gotham. Damn it. He had to attend a board meeting tomorrow.
“Look—” Constantine clenched and unclenched his fists, then steepled his fingers towards Batman. “Putting aside that you apparently have the Ghost King’s goddamn phone number—” A deep breath. “Exactly how is he gonna get here? Again. Infinite Realms. Place between universes. Not the easiest place to get in or out of.”
Batman felt a rustle beneath his cape. His mouth twitched.
“Simple.” He lifted up his cape. “Like this.”
From the shadows of Batman’s cape emerged Phantom. And though he gave the Justice League perhaps one of his sunniest smiles, it didn’t change the fact that his presence lowered the temperature of the room by about five or ten degrees.
Phantom waved, giddy. “Hi.”
Batman could hear Constantine’s sanity start to fray.
Wonder Woman, ever the pillar of calm, was the first to greet their guest. “Welcome, Your Majesty, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I am Diana of Themyscira, though I am also known as Wonder Woman in the world of man.”
Phantom eagerly shook her hand. “It’s so nice to meet you, too! I’ve heard a lot about you guys.”
“Is that so?” She looked at Bruce.
Batman tugged his cape closed, glaring at Green Lantern over his shoulder.
Lantern released his hold on Batman’s cape, hands up and a sheepish expression on his face. “Jeez Louise, Bats. I’m just curious if you have an interdimensional portal in your cape or something. I’m pretty sure I saw like three of your kids playing Uno under your cape a couple weeks ago, and now a king?”
Batman grunted.
Danny zipped up into the air. “Oh wow. Oh wow, wow, wow!” He flew from window to window, taking in the sight of the stars of the bright blue earth below. “This…this is beautiful!”
As much as Bruce hated cutting away Danny’s fun, they had work to do. “Phantom, we have business to discuss.”
“Oh! Yeah, sorry about that. Almost forgot.” Danny floated back to Batman’s side. “Let’s take care of this quick. I can’t stick around for too long.”
“Oh?”
“I have to get back by curfew.”
Flash gave a confused look to Green Lantern. “Ghosts have curfews?”

Stay With Me | Fox Mulder x GN!reader
request: Hi, could you do Fox Mulder with the prompt '' you didn't call me back, I was worried '' please :)?
Thank you take care ♥️ - anonymous
summary: Fox doesn't call you back when he gets home from his latest case, and knowing him, you can't help but to worry.
warnings: one (1) swear
You were worried, tossing and turning in your bed as you feared the worst and expected just as much; Scully had called you earlier, just a friendly call to remind you that she wanted your help in the knitting club tomorrow, which you accepted. But when she called you to tell you that she had gotten home safe and sound, that's when the panic settled in.
It had been almost twelve hours since you had heard from Fox. Scully hadn't been with him, she had spent her time doing autopsies and going over the scientific end of things and had been booked on a slightly earlier flight due to a technical accident; she promised you that he would be fine, but for all either of you knew, he had been caught by the Cigarette Smoking Man, and he was done for.
Every time you tried to call, Fox's phone went straight to voicemail. Every time, his answering machine picked up. Worry seemed like a kiss on the cheek compared to what you were currently feeling, and with each hour that passed, you felt your throat get more and more clogged. Your hands were shaking, and you could feel your heart against your jugular, pushing against it despite its confinement. Your eyes would widen and your stomach would churn every time you heard a car go past. You hated it.
You tried the Gunmen, but they had no idea, either; every time they had tried to contact Fox, it had gone to voicemail, picked up by his answering machine time and time again. They were sure that he would turn up sooner or later, though, convinced that he was onto something big and he was just chasing it down to the last nub of truth.
Their words only provided a little comfort.
You couldn't cope with it, though, the worry was getting to be too much and before you could stop yourself, you were heading over to Fox's flat; you were thankful that he had given you a spare key a while back so that you could feed his fish when he was away, and when the door swung open, you heard a yelp.
Fox, his trousers undone and his shirt halfway up his stomach, a lazy look on his face like he had been doing nothing but staring at the ceiling, shot up and breathed out a sigh of relief.
"What are you doing here?"
"You didn't call me back, I was worried," you admitted, shoving his legs off of the sofa so that you could sit down. "Are you okay?"
Fox rubbed his face with one hand, nodding slowly as he cleared his throat. "Yeah, no, just... so tired."
Gently, you pulled him into your side, keeping an arm around his shoulder as you sighed. "Do you wanna come back to mine? At least then you'd have an actual bed."
He was struggling to keep his eyes open enough as it is, but he couldn't resist as he nodded. "Sure... did you feed my fish?"
You kissed his head softly, rubbing his arm a little. "Yeah, I did, babe... are you sure you can make it to mine, though?"
"Hmm? Oh, yeah," a yawn ripped through him. "I just need to do my trousers back up..."
"Oh, shit, right!" You chuckled, rubbing the back of your neck as you got up and turned away. "Sorry..."
"Don't worry," Fox hummed. "I'm your boyfriend, I don't care if you look or not."
"Still," you huffed. "You ready to come stay with me?"
Stretching as he finished doing his trousers back up and tucking in his shirt, Fox let out a grumble. "Let's go."

We're Worlds Apart (7)
Draco Malfoy x American No-Maj!reader
series m.list | general m.list | previous chp
warnings: none (other than blaise being jealous)
summary: Draco Malfoy is a pureblood wizard. Magic runs through his veins and has been since his birth. You're a Wiccan No-Maj; a non-magical being with ordinary blood through your veins, but practices what you call magick. And this very practice upsets your neighbor.
a/n: my workplace is under construction and i'm stressed bc i have to work around all the rubbish and it makes me stay longer when i wanna come home and write 😭 anyways, this is unedited so i'll come back to it after i clock off tonight
(gif cred)
Being friends with you was kind of weird. Draco couldn't really tell you about his day because it consisted of magic nearly the entire time. He’s also at work for almost the entire week, so he wasn't really at home much.
Except for now. Draco finally had twelve days off to spend with his best mates. He had been so caught up with the chaos that surrounded him at work that he wasn't able to plan any sightseeing activities to do with them, so he just let them pick whatever it was they wanted to do.
“I could always ask Y/N what to do,” Blaise suggested. Yes, Draco hadn't forgotten the small fling between you and his best mate. Blaise would go over to your house at least three nights a week while Draco stayed overnight at Santa Marie's. Theo didn't mind being by himself and was grateful that the guest bedroom was farthest from your bedroom window. Draco was also grateful that he chose to go on nights he wasn't home; he didn't need to hear you two throughout the night.
Now that a hatchet was somewhat buried, Draco thought that asking you was a good idea. He nodded his head and headed for the door. Blaise also got up, but the both of them stopped when their hands nearly collided on the door knob. “Oh, did you want to ask her?” Blaise questioned.
“Uh… no you go. She's your…” Draco paused, “You go ahead.” Blaise gave him a weird look before walking out the door and headed to your house. Theo watched the whole thing and waited to start laughing at Draco. He glared at Nott and spat out, “What are you laughing at?”
“What was that?” Theo held his stomach as he caught his breath. “Did you want to talk to her?” Draco didn't appreciate whatever his friend was trying to say. It's just a bloody question. He sat down on the couch and picked up the Daily Prophet from Theo’s hands. He wasn't surprised to find Harry Potter in it, a column about his recent marriage with Weasley’s sister. He was surprised that they hadn't gotten married sooner.
“Do you think it's weird that Blaise is dating a muggle?” Theo asked. His face was neutral, but his tone was suggestive. Draco internalized the question. On one hand, it didn't really disturb him all that much. He was confused as to whether or not you were his girlfriend, but Blaise doesn't really talk about you too much. On another hand, he knew Blaise and even though you annoyed him – or did you? – he always took pity on any girl that mixed with Blaise. Draco didn't know what Blaise would do, but it was enough to get anyone on their knees for him in more ways than one.
“I don’t care who or what he dates,” Draco stated. Theo went to minding his business, until something caught his attention from outside. “Oh Salazar, what is he doing?” Theo’s voice was filled with amusement. Draco turned from his sitting position and saw what was happening.
Blaise was fully making out with you right on your porch. Out where anyone could watch. One of his hands were tangled in your hair while the other one was resting gently on your waist. Your hands rested shyly on his shoulders and it looked as if you were on your toes just to reach up to his height. The kiss was slow and sensual.
It was exactly what Draco needed to see. Because from that, he felt nothing at all. Just a gross feeling that he was potentially invading someone's privacy. Sure, they were outside but it still felt weird. Draco wasn't one to enjoy public displays of affection.
“Wow, he’s really milking it out. You reckon he asked her about sight-seeing?” Theo kept observing them from the window. Draco hit his head with the newspaper rolled up. Theo laughed and turned to look at the blond man next to him. “How come you’re not with anyone?”
“With where I work, do you honestly think I have time to find someone?” Draco sassed as he continued reading. Dating was the last thing on his mind. He was too focused on work to even flirt with another woman. Pansy was the last person Draco had ever dated. He was meant to be betrothed to Astoria Greengrass, but Draco declined and started his path to becoming a healer. He also didn't want to be in a marriage knowing he couldn't genuinely love her.
Moving to America, he never found anyone interesting. Ashley was nice but not only was she already married, she was married to a woman. Other women in the department, or hospital as a whole, took an initial liking to Draco, but he figured it was solely due to the fact that he’s a foreign British man with an accent. After a month of women flirting with him, it died down almost completely and everyone treated him as normal which pretty much confirmed it to him. Would Draco like to date someone? Absolutely. But right now, he was perfectly happy being by himself.
Theo knew Draco enough to know when he was fibbing and this wasn't one of those times. He was glad to see Draco be okay with himself after all this time. He remembers the constant need of validation during their days at Hogwarts. And it was because of a certain wizard who Draco was always competing with. Now as for Theo, he had been out of the dating scene for a while and he was nearly desperate to get laid.
He dropped the topic and got up to take a short nap in the guest room. A few moments later, Blaise was knocking on the door. Draco got up to open it and was caught by surprise to see you standing behind Blaise. You looked like you weren't really sure what you were doing there either. “Mate,” Blaise started off, “what if we brought her along with us?”
You blinked at the tall man standing in front of you and then looked at Draco who had the same facial expression. “Who else better to show us around than someone who actually lives here?” Blaise suggested. It made sense; you would know your way around and Draco could save himself the trouble of not only Blaise and Theo being lost, but also Draco also getting lost. He still had a hard time with some of the streets. One-way streets, round-a-bouts, and bike lanes were still new to him. And you once mentioned how Manhattan was worse than the streets here in Buffalo, so how would he deal with that?
You stood unusually quiet. Blaise had only just asked you to tag along with them and before you could even process the question, you were being dragged to Draco’s house. “I don’t know, I don't want to intrude on–”
“Nonsense, you’d be our guide. I highly doubt Draco knows where he’s going,” Blaise assured. He got a stern ‘Hey’ from the blond but ignored it. “What do you say? Come with us?” You looked back and forth from the both of them and settled on Draco, your eyes asking him if he would even want you there. He shrugged his shoulders, leaving it up to you.
“Uh, sure. I’d just have to fix my schedule and–” you started before Blaise cut you off, “Great! We leave tomorrow at seven in the morning.” He kissed your forehead and walked inside. Draco stood at the door and was still confused as to what just happened. You started to walk away before Draco asked you, “Should we take my car?” You turned around and thought about it. “If you want.”
Draco preferred it, so he just agreed to it. “I’ll see you tomorrow, then.” You smiled sheepishly and raised your hand to say 'bye’. Tomorrow was surely going to be… something.
—
You were hoping to be able to rest your head on Blaise’s shoulder for the ride to the airport. But here you were, in Draco’s car with the largest cup of coffee that was barely keeping you awake as you drove there. You were glad that Draco had common sense to book two flight tickets for everyone to go there because there was so way in hell you were going to drive six hours to Manhattan and another six back.
Theo, however, was resting his head on Blaise’s shoulder as he snored away during the short ride. Blaise tried to shove him off, but it turned out that the sleepy friend was heavier than he looked. It was funny, really. Draco sat in the passenger seat next to you on his phone trying to read out directions. You insisted you didn't need them, but he said they were more for himself when they come back home.
Once on the plane, you finally got some shut eye. You stayed up all night thinking about what to do for the day. Where to go, what to eat, what to see. And other things kept you up, but that's besides the point. During the security check, you had to hold your laughter. It was hilarious to watch the three men be so confused as to what was going on. They acted like it was their first time in an airport.
The seats you had were nice and surely expensive. Draco insisted that you didn't have to pay him back. Must be nice being rich you thought. Blaise looked at you and poked your nose, “Is someone sleepy?” You glared at him before laying back into your seat, “Maybe if you didn't keep me up all night, I wouldn't be tired.” You didn't know how the man could have this much energy in the morning.
The hour went by quick and you were in Manhattan by ten in the morning. You suggested a local diner that was near the airport which they all agreed to since they didn't know their way around. At the diner, Blaise and Theo had made a dash for the restroom. You laughed at the view of Theo pushing Blaise behind him and Blaise glaring at him as he smacked the back of his head.
“I swear, they’re still childish gits,” Draco groaned. “26 years old and they still don't grow up.” You nudged his arm from across the table. “Leave them be. They’re still young, and so are you. Let loose, we’re in New York City after all. Can’t be brooding the whole time.” Draco rolled his eyes and looked at the menu that was under the glass on the table.
A waitress came up to your table with a small clipboard and notepad. “Are you two ready to order?” she asked sweetly. “Not yet, we’re waiting on two people to come back,” you answered. “Oh that’s cute, is this a double date?”
Without hesitation, you and Draco stated at the same time, “We’re not together.” The waitress looked between the two of you and just nodded. “I’ll be back, then.” The both of you hadn’t said a word when she left and patiently waited for his friends to come back. Shortly after, they did. Blaise took the spot in the booth next to you and Theo next to Draco.
“Alright, what do you suggest I get?” Blaise asked you. He had his body slightly facing yours and an arm over the top of the seat around you. He hadn't bothered to look on the menu and just focused on your features. “Depends, what do you like?”
“Anything,” he lowered his voice and was close to your ear. The breath tickled your ear which made you giggle. “Okay, we get it. You two are cute. Now keep it down, I’d like to be able to digest this food,” Theo’s nose crinkled as he complained. You still didn't know Theo all that much. This morning, he walked like a zombie and he probably just became fully awake, so to see his best friend making kissy faces at you before his first meal wasn't an ideal way to start the day. Draco chuckled in his seat as he was still figuring out what to order.
“I have to make a quick call,” you announced before pulling out your phone and called one of your employees, “Were you able to open fine on your own? Okay, call me if anything happens. Okay, bye.” The waitress came back and took down the order after she set a pot of coffee for the four of you.
Theo was the first to say something, “So, Y/N is it?” You nodded in response as you took a sip from your mug. “What is it that you do in your free time? Other than Blaise, of course.” He had a smug smile watching as you blushed. Two seconds later, the table shook and Theo groaned in pain. Unbeknownst to you, both Blaise and Draco had kicked Theo in his shins.
“Stupid git,” Draco said under his breath. Theo glared at his friends as he rubbed his legs. You cleared your throat and started to speak before Blaise stopped you, “You don’t have to answer that.”
“It’s okay, he was just joking,” you defended. “No he wasn't,” Draco added. You ignored him and looked at Theo, “What do you want to know?”
He had your full attention and ignored the looks from his friends, “What do you do for a living? What’s your work like?”
“Well, I uhh,” you started, “I own a store downtown. I’m there almost everyday.”
“What kind of store is it?” Theo asked as he leaned over the table closer to you. “What do you sell?”
“Candles,” for the second time that day, you and Draco synchronized. “Yeah, I sell candles and little… knick knacks,” you still hadn't opened up to Draco or Blaise for that matter about your Wiccan activities. So to say that you sold sage bundles, specially made oils and healing crystals would raise questions you weren't ready to answer now.
“Draco, have you ever been to the place? What is it called, by the way?” Theo kept on. Blaise was certainly not kidding when he said that Theo loved to talk. “No, I haven't,” Draco answered. “It’s called Soul Beads, wasn't it?”
“Yeah, that’s the name.” The food was brought on a large tray. Blaise handed your plate to you and you grabbed your fork to dig in. He was eating slowly, looking as if he was thinking about something. “Hey, you okay?” you whispered to him, Draco and Theo having their own conversation. “Oh, uh, yeah. I’m fine, love,” Blaise continued eating at a faster pace now. You looked around the men that surrounded you and smiled. Today’s gonna be fun.
—
The day went… weird. Blaise tried to have as much fun as possible but something was bothering him. Was it Theo talking his head off the entire time? No, I’m used to that. Was it his legs tired after walking almost all day? No, not that. Was it how even though you held his hands the whole time and gave him occasional kisses on his cheek or lips, you had gone the entire day talking to Draco and shared a couple laughs with him? Absolutely.
Jealousy was always an ugly emotion to Blaise. It annoyed him during his time at Hogwarts, and it annoys him now. The way girls would ask him if he was messing around with other girls and he’d always say the same thing. “How could I when you’re the most beautiful girl in these halls?” They’d all swoon over it. And by the looks of it, you swooned over his every word as well. But the looks you gave him were different from the ones you gave Draco.
From all the letters he had gotten from Draco, Blaise knew how much he hated you. No, loathed. But after the two of you decided to make nice, it was like you had been friends since day one. Draco may have even looked comfortable talking to you. And it bothered Blaise. His time with you may have been short, but today made him realize something.
Blaise is nowhere near being in love, he knew that much. But he knew that he didn't want to be messing around anymore. He wants to have an actual relationship, and right now, he wanted it with you. Blaise was confused by it all. He should be happy that his best friend and a girl he likes gets along. It would make it all that much easier.
But something about the two of you was odd today.
Maybe there was a look that lasted too long. Or a tone that came out differently. Or maybe… no. Blaise knew what it was. He just wants to have that same friendship with you. Blaise still didn't know that much about you. He didn't even know you had your own store until that morning. And to hear that his friend who supposedly hates you even knows not only the name of the store, but what you sell, hit something in him.
So, he was going to change that. Because for the most part, you were pretty interesting. He knew you were a Wiccan and as much as he doesn't really care to know what it was all about – considering he can just do any magic with a flick of a wand – he’d at least know you a little better.
Momentarily, as he was deep in thought, Theo’s annoying voice popped in his head. Hey, at least you know her in a way Malfoy won’t. He mentally cringed at it for a second before he thought Wait. I do. It was a start, not one that someone usually prefers, but it was better than nothing.
You sat beside him on the ride back home and had a smile on your lips while you rested on him. Draco was driving and Theo wanted to raise the volume of the music but his hand was slapped away. “She’s sleeping, idiot.” Draco scolded.
“Merlin, look at this,” Theo looked at Blaise as he pointed to Draco’s face. “Malfoy caring for a muggle? I’ve seen everything now.”
“M-muggle?” You rubbed your eyes and yawned. The three Slytherin’s had wide eyes, Blaise cursing Theo with his eyes. “I've heard,” you let out another yawn, “Draco say that before.”
Merlin, how many times have these actually talked? Blaise thought. “I-it’s just slang from London,” he tried to cover up. You nodded your head and gave him a gentle kiss on the cheek before going back to sleep.
Once everyone was home, Blaise walked you to your door. “I had fun today, did you?” Blaise gave his most convincing smile, “Yeah, I did.”
You said ‘Good night’ and almost closed the door when he stopped you. “Is it alright that I stay with you tonight?”
“I'm kind of tired, maybe tomorrow–”
“No, not for that,” Blaise chuckled at your insinuation. You looked slightly surprised. And it made sense considering that's almost all he came over for. Nonetheless, you let him into your home. Blaise stayed true to his words and just laid beside you in bed until the two went to sleep.
In his own bedroom, Draco smiled as he thought about the fun day he had. Maybe being friends with you wasn't so bad. He went to his kitchen to grab a drink when he noticed there was one person missing. “Where's Blaise?”
“I think he's staying at Y/N’s,” Theo stated. Inside, Draco felt an unusual pang in his chest. He let it go and went to bed. Hopelessly trying to get out of his head whatever you two were up to.

The Wayne Manor was truly breathtaking.
Rachel kept staring at it with her nose glued to the windshield of the black SUV that was taking her there. After a twelve-hour flight from Themyscira and landing in New York the Amazons really surprised her saying that they are going to escort her to Gotham and not San Francisco. Since then she was wondering what might be the reason the team relocated there (and she was hoping it was temporary) but she didn't mind as long as she'd be reunited with her family.
Right now though she wasn't thinking about that, because her mind was occupied with this enormous castle-like mansion with giant windows and high towers and open taraces and a fountain in the center of the driveway. Rachel heard a few stories about the place from Dick and from Donna, she even got to sneak a glance at it through their memories but actually seeing it with her own eyes was a whole different experience.
The car slowed down rounding the fountain and Rachel's heartbeat sped up in her chest.
They were here.
And then there was Dick - standing next to Kory with his hands in his pockets and head held high. He looked more nervous than excited and Rachel had to resist the urge to roll her eyes thinking about how frantic and worried he must have been this whole time. But when he noticed her and their eyes met, his face instantly lit up, lips turning up in a brightest smile and Rachel was getting out of the car even before the engine stopped working.
Standing in line in front of the main entrance were Dick, Kory and Gar. She had no idea they'd be notified of her arrival but apparently they knew she was coming and now there's a whole welcoming committee waiting for her. Gar was bouncing on his feet, his excitement threatening to explode like a bomb. Rachel couldn't decide what was brighter - his smile or his green hair.
Kory, gorgeous as always, was standing in the middle with her arms crossed over her chest and lips stretched in a wide happy grin. She was dressed from head to toe in various shades of her beloved purple, from high heel boots and leather pants to the shiny glittery shirt. Her long hair was darker than Rachel remembered but she smiled when she noticed that the iconic thick curls were back.
At first she just stood there, happy to stretch her legs after a long drive and looked at them, smiling so hard her cheeks hurt. They didn't move either, as if paralyzed by some invisible force, watching her from a distance.
She's not sure who took the first step.
Maybe it was her, too eager to finally reunite with them after so long. Or maybe it was them, heading towards her together as one because they couldn't stand being apart for even one second longer.
She's not sure who took the first step but Dick got to her first.
All Rachel knew was that she was running and suddenly she found herself engulfed in his strong embrace, the sensation pushing all air out from her lungs. She linked her arms around his neck when he picked her up and started twirling around in circles with her, laughing into her ear. Her feet were dangling in the air and Rachel started giggling and squealing in delight as well, feeling like a little kid.
"Finally!" he sighed breathlessly when they stopped and he put her back on the ground. "Welcome back, sweetheart."
She stepped away from his hold to look at him but that's when she was captured again in two different sets of arms. She didn't even notice when Gar and Kory threw themselves at her, hugging her as tight as they could.
"It's been way too long." Kory told her, pressing a kiss to her temple. Rachel leaned her head to her and the two of them pressed their cheeks together, smiling.
"Don't leave us like that again!" Gar whined with his head on her other shoulder, squeezing her even tighter. Rachel started giggling again but this time it quickly turned into a choked up sob. She promised herself she wouldn't cry, but she couldn't hold it back now that she was with her family again.
Dick's expression softened, his eyes gazing at her affectionately.
"Oh, honey."
"I've missed you so much, guys." Rachel chuckled through tears, looking each one of them in the eyes. Dick walked up to the group and wrapped his arms around them all, pulling them into a group hug with Rachel in the middle.
"We've missed you, too, Rach." he murmured and kissed the top of her head.
"Mhmm." Kory nodded and cuddled closer.
"Like hell." Gar added and buried his face in her shoulder.
The three of them held her so tight she was starting to run out of air.
"Guys-" she gasped, trying not to laugh too much. "I can't- breathe-"
Mumbling their apologies they loosened their hold a bit, but none of them were planning on completely letting go of her. They surrounded her, arms still linked together and looking at their smiling faces, Rachel couldn't be happier. It's good to be home, even if it wasn't the Tower. Dick, Kory and Gar were here and her home was with them.
Dick's face caught her attention, his eyes to be specific and she raised an eyebrow at him, smirking.
"Are you- crying?"
"No!" he said instantly, but wiped at his cheek with the back of his hand.
"He totally is." Gar teased him, joining in on the fun. "He was one giant bubble of emotion since the moment we found out you're coming back."
"That's not true." the older man huffed.
"Oh please, that was nothing!" Kory's laugh rang in the air and Rachel turned to her with sparkling eyes. "You should have seen him in the first few weeks after you left. He was a mess!"
Gar burst out laughing, earning himself a deadly glare from Dick. Rachel couldn't stop grinning like an idiot at this entire exchange.
"Oh, yeah! He took moping around to a whole new level."
"I wasn't moping around."
"Sure, Jan."
Dick froze.
"Oh, God." Kory sighed, turning her eyes at the sky. "Here we go again." Rachel glanced between her and the boys with curiosity.
"Gar, what did I tell you about quoting memes?"
"Oh, c'mon man! It was a perfect opportunity!"
"Anyway!" Kory interrupted them with that I'm-gonna-beat-the-shit-out-of-you-if-you-don't-stop-right-now smile of hers, putting an end to their little bickering, then turned to Rachel and took her hands in hers. "After Dick finally stops denying he's overly emotional-"
"I'm not!"
"-like right now,"
"I'm not." Dick denied stubbornly, then smiled at Rachel. "I'm just happy you're back."
"-maybe you'll get to tell us how was it, hmm?" Kory finished her sentence and suddenly Rachel felt all eyes on her again. Their excitement was all over the place. She chuckled and squeezed the woman's hands back.
"Of course! I have so much to tell you!"
"Then you better start now." Gar pointed a finger at her face before walking up to her and taking her by the elbow to basically drag her in the direction of the house. "I wanna know everything! Especially if you have any new tricks up your sleeve."
Rachel shrugged innocently, but sent him a mischievous grin.
"Maybe one or two."
"Yesss!!! And wait until I'll show you around the house! This place is so dope!"
"Hey, shouldn't I be doing that?" Dick called out to them, picking up Rachel's bag from the ground where she left it.
"Exactly!" She turned to her green-haired friend. "Shouldn't he be doing that?"
"He's not gonna take you to the really cool places."
She raised an eyebrow at him, suspicious. "Such as?"
Gar glanced in both ways as if checking if no one else was listening in on their conversation, then leaned closer to Rachel and whispered. "The Batcave."
This time she couldn't hold it in anymore - she burst out laughing.
"No way!"
"Yes way!"
As Gar continued his excited rambling, Rachel looked over her shoulder at the two adults that were left behind. Dick's eyes were on her this whole time, he was smiling fondly and winked at her when their eyes met. Kory stood by his side with her hand resting on his shoulder and was sending her a look that said good luck with him now. Rachel smiled back and rolled her eyes, then followed Gar through the main entrance.
***
Dick watched his kids disappear behind the giant wooden door feeling light for the first time in months. Having Rachel back took a giant weight off his chest and he finally could breathe again. He didn't want to ask about Donna, not yet at least, he knew Rachel is gonna share the news with him sooner or later, no matter if they are good or bad. Right now all that mattered to him was that she was back with them and she was safe.
"You were crying." Kory pointed out in a teasing tone, smirking at him.
"I wasn't."
"I know what I saw, Grayson."
They stared at each other for a long moment but eventually he gave up. And no, it had nothing to do with the fact that he was starting to get lost in her eyes. Or with her smile that made his heart racing.
"Okay," he sighed. "Maybe a little. I'm just glad she's back with us, you know?"
Kory smiled at him and rubbed his shoulder comfortingly.
"I know, me too. Our girl is finally back home."

abandoned Star Wars fic #1
This was an AU I started a while back (2014) based off the pre-Disney Buyout version of the Expanded universe. It’s basically just “what if Luke did join the Empire like he was discussing with Owen and Beru back in A New Hope?”
My original plan was for the fic to be a trilogy, following the same main events of the original trilogy. I abandoned it because I got discouraged (for the same reason I always get discouraged when writing fic for a fandom that’s been around since the dawn of time), because the Star Wars fandom is so big and there are so many amazingly talented writers in it that this AU has probably already been written, and probably written better than I could ever write it.
So, I never even posted it.
Until now...
(Oh! Also, it was gonna be a Luke/Mara ship. All my Star Wars fics are Luke/Mara.)
...
[ImpPilot]
Chapter One:
"I'd like three quarters of my pay to go to this account, please. If I can do that." Luke asked.
Even heading strait to the Fleet's financial office immediately after his graduation ceremony instead of going out to celebrate with his bunkmates, it still took an absurd two and a half hours before he could see an actual officer -nothing more than a glorified accountant, really.
"You'll meed to fill out form 6-23-A." Without even looking up from his personal terminal, the financial officer passed Luke a data pad with the blank form already open on it. "You're not the first boy wanting to send money home to his silver-haired mommy. Be sure all the routing numbers are correct and specify whether or not its a savings or checking account, or if its a business account. For business accounts you'll need to fill out an additional form."
"Uh… I think its a domestic checking account…" Luke said. More thinking out loud than actually speaking to the officer. The moisture farm was, technically, a business, but he didn’t think Tattooine was sophisticated enough for business accounts. At least, not reputable ones.
"There's a terminal in the lobby you can use if you need to call home and ask. Regular holo-net fees apply -which this office will not compensate you for." Once again, the financial officer did not look up from his desk.
Right. As if Uncle Owen would even answer. Neither he nor Aunt Beru had answered any of his calls since he left home and signed up with the Fleet.
But they just didn't understand. Luke couldn't spend his life in the day to day routine of moisture farming, watching the rest of the Galaxy turn around him. He wanted to get out and get away. See the world beyond the backwater dust-ball of his childhood and explore brave new worlds in his adulthood. But the Lars hadn't have much money and it wasn't like Luke's late parents (of which very little was spoken of) had seen fit to leave either him or his guardians any money or property of value, there were little avenues or opportunities open to him to get off world. In fact, there were only two possible ways for a poor desert brat like him to get off world.
Join up with a pirate or smugglers crew. Or sign up with the Imperial Space Navy.
So, Luke chose the lesser to two evils.
He signed up for the navy.
At least it was legal.
He went out early the morning of his sixteenth birthday after his mind was made up. Sneaking out of the farm house and into the garage, Luke intended to take the speeder into Anchorhead. Owen was waiting for him in the garage. Intent to stop him. Apparently, his sneaking wasn't too stealthy.
He gave a speech about the stupidity of what he was about to do. That it was foolish and he was just fixing to get himself killed. That he was just like his father -he was a damn fool too!- and that he would just end up hurting everyone else who cared about him. Luke ignored everything his uncle had to say though. His mind was made up and there was nothing Uncle Owen could do to stop him.
Aunt Beru was a bit gentler with him, but still just as disapproving. She met him outside the garage, as he was trying to maneuver the speeder around the complex. She brought him a sandwich lovingly wrapped, as if he were just going out to do maintenance on the vaporators. She asked Luke not to think poorly of his Uncle, he was just trying to protect him. There was a war on and the reason why the Fleet was so eager to lock new recruits into contracts was because they needed more and more bodied every day. That's all he would be to the Navy, just another body to throw into the war.
That time Luke did pause. He placed his hand over hers, resting on the side of the speeder. He assured her that this was something he had to do and that he wouldn't die the death of a nameless soldier. He couldn't explain how or why, but he could feel it. This was something he had to do, and he would not become just another body counted in the war. He would be something.
Perhaps that was the wrong thing to say, because a shadow of fear crossed her face. But it was there and gone in the space of a second. She turned her hand, resting under his and grabbed his wrist, stronger than he thought she was capable of. "Don't… don't use the name Skywalker." She said suddenly. "Its a common name out here on the Rim, but it's a dangerous name to have closer to the Empire. Don't enlist under Skywalker. Use our name. Use Lars."
Luke blinked at her. "Why?"
But she didn't answer and he was in to much of a hurry to wait and pester her.
That was the last he ever heard from either of them. Neither his aunt or uncle either called him or returned any of his calls during his time at the Academy. There was no reason to assume they would answer the comm for him now. In fact, Luke wasn't even sure if they would take his money now that he would actually be earning some. But they had raised him. And the farm wasn't easy or cheap to maintain. Maybe with the extra money, his uncle could hire a few more hands to help them out.
Luke just filled out the form the best that he could and handed it back to financial officer.
"Alright, Lars, your request should be processed in another eight to ten standard days. Everything should be in order by the time for first earning statement is payed." He said looking over the datapad. "Oh, and you forgot to fill out your pilot designation."
"Oh. Right, sorry. Its DS-42-6."
The officer began typing as Luke spoke, filling in the missing information on mental auto-pilot. "D… S… -Wait? DS? Death Star? They assigned a green kid like you to the Death Star!?" He gaped up at the kid, actually looking at him for the first time.
"Top pilot in my graduating class." Luke said, not at all ashamed of the pride that seeped into his voice. Being the top flight student was a significant achievement and not even Uncle Owen could deny that. "I guess they wanna deploy their best people on the most important postings."
"What was that number again?"
"Squad forty-two, pilot number six." He answered.
"Well, Luke Lars, I imagine you going far.
…
Most of Luke's bunkmates went out to celebrate their graduation almost immediately after the ceremonies. That meant that they all had a few hours head start on him and would probably be to faded to be good company when he did arrive. But that still didn't stop Luke from stopping in at the tapcaf they agreed on for their after grad party.
As to be expected, of the twelve men Luke had shared a barracks with for the past two years, only three of them remained when he walked through the door. One of them was just paying his tab, a woman Luke had never seen before under one arm.
"I'm telling ya, baby, I ship out tonight." He was saying to her. "Oh, hey Lars, ya made it! A bit late. Maybe you can scoop Vard and Ika up off the floor."
He left.
Vard and Ika were leaning over a table against the back wall. With a sigh, Luke crossed the tapcaff to assess them. Of the twelve bunkmates that Luke actually got along with, Ika was probably the closest one he would come to calling a 'best friend'. They weren't nearly as close as Luke had been with Biggs, but then, Biggs had to go off and desert on his first tour and place Luke in an uncomfortable situation with ISB right at the start of his second year at the Academy. Some great friend he turned out to be.
But Luke wasn't gonna think about that now. This was the eve of his graduation from the Imperial Naval Academy. This was a happy day. Even if he was about to spend it taking care of his two drunk bunkmates that -in all likelihood- he would never see again. With a conscious effort, Luke pushed Biggs from his mind.
Ika seemed to be past out on the table. A disposable coaster his only cushion against the hard plasteel and vinyl of the tabletop. Vard was at least sitting mostly vertical, but by the looks of it no less drunk. He used one hand to prop his face up while the other shot into the air in an unnecessarily showy greeting. He flailed spastically. "Hey! Look who made it!"
"A bit late, I think." Luke said as he slid into the booth next to Ika.
"Nah. I's cool. We'll just get a new bottle." He flagged down a serving droid. "Another round for me and my buddies. And make the late arrivals a double -to make up for lost time."
"Belay that." He said to the droid. Luke just shook his head. He was in no mood to get drunk tonight. The fact that he was to report for transport and deployment absurdly in the morning or risk missing the boat aside, he just had a feeling it was in his best interest not to get completely sloshed. "We'll have a round of caff instead. And make their's a double."
Vard scoff. "Ya know, Lars, for a guy who never had a daddy growing up, you act an awful lot like my father." With no small amount of effort, he pushed himself to his feet and jerkily maneuvered out of the booth. "Forget this. I'm going to finish cleaning out my bunk."
Staggering mildly, he made his way to the door, where he flagged down a transport. Well, at least he would be safe taxieing back to base.
Luke turned to look at Ika. He should probably call a transport for him too.
Standing, Luke crossed to the public holo-net, passing a very pretty red-head on his way and he lamented the fact that he had to take care of his drunkard friend. She probably wouldn't want to stay and chat with someone who associated with rowdy or irresponsible soldiers like them. Suppressing a sigh, he dialed the public transport company's number that had been very boldly posted over the terminal's key-pad and ordered a taxi to take Ika (and probably him too) back to base.
It didn't take long for the transport to arrive and when it did, Luke helped the driver carry his passed-out friend into the back seat. But Luke didn't feel much like going along. He had come to this tapcaff expecting a party -it was the eve of his graduation, after all- he felt he was entitled to at least some form of celebration. Luke payed the transport driver and went back into the tapcaff.
It was only after he sat back down at their table that the serving droid appeared with their three cups of caff.
Luke's face fell into the palm of his hand.
The pretty red-head by the holo-net terminal gave an amused laugh.
Luke looked back at her and their eyes met over the empty tapcaff. Her eyes were brilliant, and deep, and very very green. The bottom dropped out of his stomach as he felt a wonderful and glittering feeling of exhilaration at the fact that a pretty girl was looking at him with a smile. That glittering feeling was quickly scrubbed away, however, when Luke remembered that he had no idea how to talk to girls.
Back home, he'd hung out with Fixer's girlfriend. But that was always in a group setting and besides, she was already in a relationship with someone. There were a few female cadets at the Academy. But you didn't talk to them like girls unless you wanted to get punched in the dick. Luke really didn't wanna get punched in the dick by the pretty red-head.
Perhaps he hesitated a little to long after their eyes met because the red-head picked up her own drink and crossed the room to sit at his booth. "You gonna drink all those, Cadet?"
Oh, crap. The pretty girl was talking to him. What should he say? Should he make a joke? Or play it strait? Did girls like funny men, or strait forward men? Well, whatever he said, he better say something soon. Luke suddenly realized that his silence was stretching on into awkward territory. "Uh, uh… I, uh… Its 'Pilot'."
"What?" She blinked at him with those deep, sparkling, emerald green eyes.
"I'm not a Cadet anymore." I explained quickly, his ears coloring self-consciously. "I graduated today. Now I'm a Pilot."
"Oh. I see. A pilot." She gave one of those smiles people give when they're humoring a small child and Luke suddenly felt like he had already messed up with this girl. The flushing of his ears spread to his cheeks. She must have noticed the blush (then again, how could she not?), because she took pity on him. "You're not very good at this, are you?"
Luke blinked. "Uh, not good at what?"
"Flirting." She said as if this should have been obvious. "Chatting up women. Attempting to entice them to leave with you. Shore leave doesn't last forever and you can't afford to waste time. I assume you're shipping out tomorrow?"
"Y-yes." He nodded.
"So you've got, what, maybe seven hours before you have to report to your transport."
"Well, yes, actually." Luke had to pause. She knew an awful lot about military logistics. But then again, this was an Academy town. The locals must be used to young soldier-boys coming and going and trying to pick up their young women in between.
"Well, Pilot, I've got even less time than that." She informed him, running a finger over the rim of one of the untouched caff mugs. "Ya see, I just came here for a quick job and now that the jobs done, I've only got a couple hours before I have to be lifting off and flying out."
"Oh, do you work for a shipping company?" Luke asked. Work was a polite subject to discuss, right?
She just shook her head, her red hair cascading round her shoulders in elegant waves. "No, no, you're getting this all wrong." She said. "Listen, Pilot, I have to ship out soon, you have to ship out soon. You're cute. I'm hot. And we're both lonely. You can't take me back to your barracks, and I won't take you to my ship. So, I was thinking of maybe one of those pay-by-the-hour places down the street from the port. We share a couple hours together, then go our separate ways. I don't tell you my name, you don't tell me your pilot designation."
Luke just blinked at her. It… it sounded like she was trying to proposition him. The blush on his face colored to almost scarlet. Oh, the things Aunt Beru would have to say if she heard this. "I… I'm sorry, Ma'am, but I don't do that sort of thing. I, uh, I wasn't brought up that way. But… if you like, I'll treat you to dinner."
With a sigh, the woman leaned back in her seat. "I don't suppose I've got the time to hunt down a better deal. Alright, Pilot, a chase little dinner date it'll be."
Finally feeling balanced for the first time since she sat down, Luke flagged down the serving droid. "Two menus, please."
She learned forward, resting her chin in her hand. "Well, Pilot, you're the first man to ever refuse my offer. So, either you're a perfect gentleman -which thought were just creatures of pure myth- or else I'm not your type of company."
"Oh, I know I'm not a perfect gentleman." Luke assured her. He was idealistic and given over to fantasies and delusions of grandeur. Definitely not perfect. "But my aunt did raise me to be respectful."
"Good aunt." She took a sip of one of the abandoned cups of caff.
"So…" Luke began awkwardly. "If you don't tell me your name, and I'm not allowed to tell you my pilot designation… what are we gonna talk about?"
"Good question." She nodded, tapping her bottom lip in thought. "What made you decide to become a pilot?"
"I was a little short for a Stormtrooper." He joked. "But actually, I always wanted to be a pilot. My father was a navigator on a spice freighter and a navigator is basically a co-pilot."
...
AND THAT’S ALL SHE WROTE!
That was Mara Jade sitting with him at the tap caff, BTW. Luke wasn’t gonna see her again until after the destruction of the Death Star.
Vader was gonna “sense a ripple in the Force” once Luke arrived on the Deathstar for his tour of duty. But he wasn’t actually going to take note of Luke specifically until Obi-Wan, Han, and... BIGGS DARKLIGHTER break onto the Deathstar to rescue Leia.
In this AU, Biggs lives. He’s the one who makes the shot that destroys the Deathstar.
Luke and Vader are the only survivors.
After their fighters (Vader’s TIE Advanced, and Luke’s shitty regular live-1 TIE fighter) are picked up by another Imperial ship, Vader confronts Luke face-to-mask.
Luke’s all like “I wanted to be a pilot because of my father.”
To which Vader replies “Owen Lars has never been, nor will he ever be, a pilot.” (Remember: Luke enlisted under the name “Lars”.)
Luke should be confused by Vader knowing so much about his uncle, but Luke’s also kinda dumb. So he just assumed Vader read his personnel file. He get’s all self-conscious and confesses to enlisting under a different name. Owen Lars is actually his uncle, not his father. His father’s name was Skywalker.
Vader doesn’t visibly react, but behind his mask he’s just like, “OH SHIT!”
And that’s where the “A New Hope” volume of this AU was gonna end.

Fatal | Mobster!Tom x OC!
Summary: Violet Thorne and Tom Holland are both on opposing sides in the midst of a mob war. What happens when fatal collides with dangerous?
t w o
--
"Dad, I don't know what you want me to do here!" Violet sighed loudly throwing her hands in the air. Her father watching her pace back and forth infront of his desk.
"My love, I don't understand why you insist on me giving my seat to your brother. You are my first born thus, it's yours," he explained in a hushed tone.
"I want out of this dad! I've been trying to get out of this! And I can't do that i-if you keep dragging me back in!" Violet didn't understand how her father couldn't comprehend what she's been trying to say for the past hour.
The skin on her arm felt raw. Her nails dragged across it continuously since the topic was brought up.
"Then explain to me why, Violeta!" He stood slamming his hands on the dark oak desk.
Violet knew he had a rule about speaking to his children calmly, reserving his assertive voice for their enemies and prisoners.
He was always a gentle man around her and her brothers, some would say you wouldn't be able to tell he ran a mob while he was around his children. This circumstance was a rarity in her family.
So she stood and let the silence envelope the room.
"Exactly my point. You have no reason for wanting to be out of the business. Not a valid one anyway."
When in fact she did.
Her whole life Violet watched her brothers grow up like soldiers. As soon as they could walk, a gun was placed into their hands and the boys were taught how to shoot.
She didn't want a family like that. She's terrified to have a family like that.
"This could all be yours, my love. This...this empire was built on first borns, you are to continue it on. I'm growing old, Violeta. I need you to take my place. Especially when we're in the midst of a war."
"A war?"
"The Hollands have been crossing multiple mob boundaries in the past months. They're making alliances with the Diaz mob and broke their truce with the Rizzos. They're expanding. I can't do this on my own, Violeta."
"Pappa but you're not on your own..theres five other boys in the house waiting to take your spot. Leo has a knack for this, Dad. Use him!"
He chuckled lowly, "We both know you'd give Leonardo a run for his money."
"That's not my point. What I am saying is tha-" Violet was cut off by Luca, the youngest of the six, as he swung the wooden doors open doors open.
"We found the mole," was all he said before turning around and leaving.
"Mole? What mole?" Violet walked with her father out of his office, confusion written all over her face.
"Some of our info was leaked and other mobs got ahold of our shipments, drug and weapon outlets, even some safe houses." She could feel her father getting angrier as she reached the basement of their mansion.
"What?!"
Angelo, the third oldest joined them, "We found a usb full of our shipment dates and outposts. It was a cook, says the Hollands sent him."
Of course it was
She watched her father take out knives and guns as he headed for the lowest floor. The mere smell of that place made her stomach churn.
"You coming?" Angelo stopped midstep and turned to her.
"Yeah I'm just gonna save myself the trouble and head out for the day," Violet backed away from the flight of stairs.
"Hey Vi..just so you know, you're gonna have to suck it up one day, this job has no place for personal morals," Angelo turned around and decended the stairs, leaving Violet chewing at her lip.
What if he was right?
What if she really just needed to suck it up?
What if this was meant for her?
What if
What if
What if
Wh-
"Earth to Violet!" Leo waved a hand infront of her face.
The raven haired girl was dragged out of her own throughts.
"Tom wants to talk to you." Leo whispered, afraid that their father someone would hear.
Violet's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, "Tom? Tom Holland?"
"Yes Tom Holland! Who else!" Her brother sighed in annoyance, "He sent a letter this morning, good thing I got to it before Dad."
A light blue envelope was placed in her hand.
"A letter? Guy doesn't own a phone?" she scoffed, eyes skimming through the writing, the letters were smooth and neat, contrasting the many wrinkles on the paper.
"He's traditional I guess. Whatever. It just says he wants to meet with you to discuss some things blah blah blah...some thing about weapons yadda yadda.." Leo talked animatedly. His hands always waving around as he spoke.
"Why not Dad? I'm not in charge."
"Dad has it out for him, he's paranoid these days. Thinks everyone's out to get him."
"And what if it's a trap?"
"I'll have men tail you for protection, but other than that I think this is you know...good."
"Good? Good how?"
"Look, I don't wanna see this war that Pappa's been talking about happen. People will die. If theres a way to stop it, I think only you can pull it off."
"As much as I'm flattered, there's no point in me talking to him. I'm not taking Dad's place."
Leo rolled his eyes at his stubborn sister.
"No one said anything about that! Just go talk to him and see what he wants!"
"Fine."
"Yes!"
"But-"
"Oh no."
"You have to handle that southwest gang of criminals scamming our casinos."
"Ugh."
---
"Have they replied?" Tom asked as Harrison walked into the room.
"She's on her way now, actually. Eager girl," Harrison chuckled. "What do you want with her anyway?"
"Nothing harmful. Just trying to see if she could hold her own." Tom smirked as the burn of scotch travelled down his throat.
Violet rolled up to the front of the Holland mansion, a bit bigger than the Thorne's but then again, who's keeping track these days? Right?
Sam Holland walked to the car and opened the door for Violet. "Miss Thorne."
Violet took his hand and bent to look back at her driver in the car.
"When should I pick you up ma'am?"
"I'll call for you, Artie. Thank you." she smiled gratefully and followed the twin into the house.
"Bring a weapon with you, Thorne?" Harrison called from the top of the foyer.
"You think I'm gonna go into enemy territory without one?" she retorted. "Whoa! Kid! What're you doing!"
"Can't take any chances." Sam began to pat her down staring from her waist.
"Think we're gonna roll and show our bellies just cos you're a woman?" Harrison chuckled.
"I was counting on it.." she pouted as Sam seized her gun.
"Now there's no need for that ,Sammy." All of a sudden Tom appeared next to Harrison and started decending the stairs. "Don't you know how to treat a lady?" He grinned at her, "Let her keep the gun."
"Tom-"
"Let her keep the gun." Venom dripped from Tom's voice as he spoke slowly, "After all, this is just a casual talk right?" His eyes moved to hers, an ominous meaning behind his words unsettled her but stayed holding his gaze.
"Sure is." she took her gun back and slipped it on the band on her jeans as Tom looked behind her and whispered, "Then tell your men to turn around and go home."
Violet's heart dropped to her stomach and turned, the men Leo had sent with her we're parked outside the gates of the mansion, headlights turned off and obvious guns in hand. She sighed and called her brother.
"Yeah?"
"Tell them to go home." she said simply into the phone as Tom smirked at her.
"Vi, you can't be serious."
"Just do it."
She hung up the phone and threw a taunting smile at the boys before her.
"Follow me." Tom led Violet up the stairs and into what she assumed was his office. Much like her father's, the office was very manly and dark.
Taking a seat infront of his desk she asked, "Why am I here, Holland?"
"I want a cut of your drug profits." Tom said simply.
"And what do I get in return?" Violet leans forward to place her forearms on the desk.
"Safe travels. I know that for years your family has been funneling your weapons through my side of the city to get to them across the Atlantic. And for years my guys have been giving you trouble," Violet nods, pouring herself her own cup of scotch, "All I'm asking for is say..20% of your drug profits and I let your guys through with no hassle."
Violet finally breaks eye contact with Tom and doubles over in laughter, catching the mob boss off guard.
"20%?! Ha! You're delusional." She scoffs at him.
He stared at her with a look of both amusement and annoyance.
"Mr. Holland," Violet recollected herself as she sat with poise, sharp eyes looking at the man before her, "did you know that my family runs America's biggest underground drug cartel? We have 8 different bases across the country, and 2 abroad. Bringing in approximately twenty-million dollars a year each. You're asking me to cut 20% of my 200 million a year to..what," she did the math quickly in her head as Tom gaped at her in disbelief, "$160,000,000 for safe travels, as you put it, for one of our outposts? You've gone insane. Your men aren't anything mine can't handle. Now if you'll excuse me."
Tom ran his calloused hands up and down his face in exhaustion. Man she was a hassle.
"Wait."
Violet sat back down and looked at him in boredom.
"15%"
"Eight."
"Thirteen."
"Six."
"Fifteen."
"Six."
"Twelve."
"Three."
Tom cussed outloud and leaned back in his chair. "8% and I'll tell you what the Rizzo's down south are planning."
"Why would I care about some shithole mob?" Violet scoffed at his poor attempt to negotiate.
"They're trying to kill you."
Tom saw that what he said piqued the stubborn girls interest.
"Fine. 16 million a year. Now, tell me more."
Tom inwardly smirked at this, "They think that killing you would kill your empire. They know Robert would never give his seat to anyone else. And they also know you're refusing to take it. If you're gone..all they have to do is wait for your dad to die and your mob along with it."
The room was filled with silence as a million thoughts ran through Violet's mind.
"Huh," she chuckled.
She's laughing? Why would she be laughing at the fact someone's trying to kill her? Tom thought to himself.
"Guess that's just another thing on my list," she got up and slid her coat on, "enjoy your sixteen million, Holland."
"Pleasure doing business with you, Violet." The pair shook hands before Violet said, "Buy your share under a different name, my dad would never sell to a Holland."
"Will do," Tom walked her to the front door, "And for the record..I wouldn't mind you being the business, Violet. You'd be a worthy opponent." Tom complimented her genuinely.
Violet only looked back at him, winking she said, "You bet your sweet ass I'd be."
Tom chuckled as the click of her heels faded and Harrison was at his side.
"So...?"
"Ferocious that one.. smart too." Tom had a sly smile decorating his face.
"But I've got her right where I want her."
