I watched a Jack and Joker edit with some of the first ep story and it reminded me how much I liked Jack in his bright-eyed innocent phase. Even after losing his parents terribly, even after unfairly not making the national team, he was so shiny and optimistic. And I loved how Yin played him. His whole presence was different than in other roles I've seen him in.

I also loved how much Joke liked Jack immediately. That man has been feeling his feels for 5 years, all mixed up in guilt and regret and some serious yearning. He was drawn to that light in Jack. He wanted a light like that in his life so badly, which made what happened all the more tragic.

And I love that when Joke comes back, he sees how Jack has changed and although he wants to help Jack get back some of that light he had before, he knows he has good reason to be more world weary and he clearly is even more endeared at who Jack is in the face of the world he was sucked into.

I just really appreciate that this is a story that gives reason after reason as to why these two characters would find themselves drawn toward each other over and over again.

Sure, they're pretty. Sure, they're clearly very hot for each other. But they also have a connection that is emotional and based on both their past experiences and traumas. They've slowly built an admiration for each other that makes me a little bit nutty.

So yeah, in a mob drama where no one seems to get very hurt, there is a whole lot of threatening, half the time they don't have guns, when they do they rarely shoot them - the life stakes don't seem to be very high, but the emotional stakes clearly are and that's why I keep coming back to think about it.

last year i finally read "all that's said in the low light" by headlocket which i feel like has developed its own reputation by now, but just in case you don't know - it's kind of known in the fandom as a massive tearjerker. As promised, I cried buckets over it and it left an enormous impact on me.

I drew this comic (after getting permission from headlocket) as a what if on a situation in chapter 12, where Simon goes through a period of radio silence from Johnny after essentially giving him his blessing to date other people, the utter clown. We only see it from Johnny's side, who is really going through it, but the mental image of Simon staring at a slew of his own unread messages really stuck with me...did he think this was it? That that shitshow of a conversation he had with Johnny might've been the last they ever had? What if Johnny just never responded to him again? Did he regret giving him permission?
