Some of the final illustrations for my last uni project of the semester! For brevity I haven’t included everything lmao, but these are my favourites of the 20 I ended up doing
I was looking at adapting Sir Gawain and the Green Knight to more of a storybook format and these were the illustrations to accompany the text!
(Animal characters because I was initially going for a fucked up medieval manuscript animal thing but that got lost along the way, rip </3)
#sir gawain and the green knight#the green knight#gawain#at a loss on how to tag this tbh lmaooo#arthurian literature#like 90% sure it was the burton raffel translation i used in the end but i read a few so ill get back on that#swapped out the stags that bertilak hunts for hares because um. well he's a deer and i didnt think about the implications#until it was too late#honestly just dont think too hard about any of the implications#half my major project decisions are 'oh that would be funny'#vibes art#i just got everything printed and bound this week but oof 2 weeks left to get everything documented#the bind was going so well and then i crushed the spine in the final press <//3 shes a lil busted now#never drawn animals properly until this project but you learn fast on the job lmaoo#they do the job#tw blood

Can you recommend fics where harry thinks draco is up to something? thank you so much! I love this blog.
Sure thing, anon! A classic Drarry trope👌🏼I hope you enjoy these:
push and pull you down by @bonesliketambourines (E, 5k)
Harry's resigned himself to petty, inconsequential cases and no real connection to his job at the Auror department—after all, what else would he be doing with his time? He's not happy, not really, but that hardly matters. A chance encounter with a mostly-naked Draco Malfoy exposes him to an entirely different world, one much more colourful than the lonely one he currently occupies—but at what cost?
The Usual by @aibidil (T, 9k)
Harry finally tries the new magical coffee shop on Diagon Alley. A story in which Draco is Up To Something™ and Harry is going to get to the bottom of it, and to the bottom of that sixteen ounce to-go cup.
Operation Dragon's Shenanigans by @nv-md (E, 14k)
Harry's in love with Draco, but it's complicated. Even more complicated than 'I'm in love with my ex-archnemesis and I get dizzy every time I see him smile'. No matter that Harry's an Auror, and always loved a good mystery, he's still having trouble figuring Draco out. And he's the only one who can see that Draco isn't a regular human.
Sleight of Hand by @the-starryknight (E, 15k)
It’s another one of those horrid Ministry affairs, and the only interesting thing is twinkling from Draco Malfoy’s finger. Can you really blame Harry for being fascinated by the gorgeous emerald ring and those long, elegant hands, especially when he’s certain Malfoy is up to something?
Espresso Patronum by @tasteofshapes (T, 15k)
When Draco reappears five years after the war and opens a wildly popular coffee shop, Harry’s pretty sure that Draco’s Up to Something. He just has to prove it.
The Regret Machine by @cavendishbutterfly (E, 15k)
Malfoy’s coming in to do fancy Legilimency work on Hermione’s mind healing machine. Harry’s his test subject—and he’s pretty sure Malfoy is still Up To Something.
Infuse With Affection, Enchant With Love by @bafflinghaze (T, 16k)
It starts with Draco making protective pendants for himself, his parents, and his friends, after the war. Something that would watch their backs—and their fronts—as people spat on them in the streets and hexed them in the alleyways. Draco gets better at it, does a course on it, and takes enough commissions for charmed jewellery that he eventually opens his own shop.
Rich Friend by @sorrybutblog (E, 18k)
As far as Harry can tell, Draco Malfoy is still rich as hell. He’s just not a wizard anymore. Featuring: Draco Malfoy trying to make it as a Muggle pop star, Harry Potter as our confused and horny hero, bad driving, good music, and the mysterious magic of falling for someone.
Here Be Dragons by birdsofshore (E, 21k)
Harry doesn’t want to waste his time investigating illegal dragonhide trading, whether it involves a fetish club in Knockturn Alley or visiting a remote island in Wales. Why the bloody hell does Malfoy always have to be up to something?
Trouble, My Old Friend by Tepre (E, 21k)
Harry goes rogue investigating an illegal potion and ends up at Draco Malfoy's dodgy lab.
Tuxedo Angel by tryslora (E, 25k)
Harry and Neville are looking for the infamous Dragon Lily, a Dark witch active throughout Europe and Asia. Instead, they find the Tuxedo Angel, a beautiful witch performing in Rome. Harry quickly discovers that the Angel is not what she seems, and fights his attraction to her, while both he and the Angel are drawn into a web created by ancient magic that pulls them together, whether they are ready for it or not.
À Bon Chat by @oknowkiss (E, 35k)
Draco Malfoy didn’t intend to lead a life of crime after the war. It’s just that being good had turned out so incomprehensibly boring. Now he's thirty-five, a fully redeemed member of society, the darling of the wizarding social pages, and a newly minted consultant for Gawain Robards' Investigative Research division. In his spare time, he enjoys good whisky, casual sex, and moonlighting as an art thief.
measures of our days and nights by flimsy (E, 40k)
Draco returns to London to help the Ministry decipher a spell, but things aren’t quite as simple as they seem.
The Last Day We Ever Close Our Eyes by @firethesound (E, 43k)
When Draco Malfoy returns to the public eye by purchasing a run-down little antiques shop on Knockturn, Harry is convinced that he is up to something. It turns out that Harry is both very right and very wrong about that.
Soup-pocalypse and The Great Curry Cataclysm by SquadOfCats (E, 104k)
Eleven years after the war, Draco Malfoy leads a quiet, boring, and perfectly respectable life, thanks very much. Or, at least he does, until a sudden and very unexpected veela awakening causes him to throw soup all over Harry Potter in the middle of the Ministry cafeteria.
The Star Splitter by @oflights (E, 219k)
On a routine time travel assignment to the past, Draco stumbles upon 7-year-old Harry Potter and witnesses his neglect and mistreatment by the Dursleys. In the moment, there is only one solution, even if it goes against all his training as a Time Agent: he has to bring Harry back to the future with him.

ok so ive been marinating on some thoughts of 4KOTA again so
18+ 4KOTA and friends but BOOZE EDITION
Percy Platoon first
Donny is a BEAST, this mans can drink so much. It takes so much to get him drunk. He's near the top of ranking here. He gets a little cranky when he's drunk but you can bet your ass he spends so much of the time of getting there making fun of everyone and the time after getting there of being a jokey teasing.
Anne, I think isn't too much of a fan but she can drink a good amount before she's drunk drunk. High middle of the leaderboard. She's a happy drunk and also just more of what she's already like but at 100% the whole time. She will knock herself out within an hour, and it will be Gawain's job to carry her to bed
Percy and Nasiens are. Frankly, I think they're mildly immune? Obviously, Nasiens can frankly erase the effects of alcohol and I'm p sure Percy just can't. It just doesn't work on him. Does this make them top or bottom of the leaderboard? Who knows.
Tristan Platoon
I think Isolde and Jade are both middle ground as well, but opposite side of the middle. Isolde has a slightly higher tolerance than mid and Jade is slightly under. Isolde is a crier, she's real emotional type and she WILL hug somebody. Jade will try to be the hugged one, but he heavily disassociates man. He goes off, he's on another planet.
Chion, I will be mean too, I will not lie. He is pretty low on the leaderboard but not the bottom, it doesn't take much to get drunk and he's a little more obviously mean than usual but he's so wobbly its hard to take him seriously. But he does absolutely make fun of our bottom of the leaderboard.
Tristan is smack between Chion and Jade. He's fairly low tolerance but you can thank the genes he got from Meliodas for being able to handle any booze at all. He's giggly and sweet and always winds up laying on somebody somehow. Shoulder, lap, back, this man will find a way to become a feather boa on you if he can.
AND LANCE!!! Oh this is what spurred this whole post! Lancelot my boy my guy my little purse chihuahua
IF I could direct your attention to Ban's wiki page, you will see that Lance's old man is a LIGHTWEIGHT! Ban gets shitfaced at the slightest amount of booze and you cannot look me in the eye and tell me Fairies have any better chance. Lance is the LIGHTEST LIGHT WEIGHT IN BRITANIA and he HATES IT. And worst yet, he's just like his dad when he's shitfaced. He gets real friendly and by GOD he won't stop laughing.
Chion loves to gloat about how he can drink more than Lancelot, but Tristan and Percy are by far the worst of it, they WILL tease him relentlessly the day after because he would not stop telling them they're his beeeeeessssssstttt frrrriiieeennndddsss~!
And last but certainly not least.
Gawain is just. Impervious. She can down a whole barrel of good shit and act no different. Her face doesnt even flush. You literally can't tell if it does anything and she'll certainly never tell if it works. She and Donny absolutely do drinking contest cause Donny always thinks 'this time I'll win' and then doesn't.

I didn't realize how much people fundamentally misunderstand Eggman and Sonic both as characters and as a pair until now tbh.
No, Phantom Rider Sonic is not out of character for Sonic nor for Eggman. Let's look at right before Sonic accepted the Eggstreme Gear.
Going undercover is implied to be incredibly beneficial to Sonic, Tails, and Amy's plan, something Eggman agrees with:
Eggman took a sabbatical after Eggperial City was destroyed, then came across Orbot and Cubot watching the Clean Sweepstakes opening ceremony, and didn't like that he was being mocked:
He was at least happy to see Sonic and the Babylon Rogues squabble, but then Sonic got disqualified (which Eggman claims he hated because humiliating Sonic is his job), which gave Eggman an idea:
Since Sonic was indirectly responsible for Eggman's inspiration coming back, he felt like repaying him in some way:
And throughout the arc, Eggman is shown to have been honest about this (unless something happens in issue 74/issue 75). This scene from issue 69 sets up mutual benefit; Sonic can more easily create a diversion because he's disguised, Tails and Amy can more easily sneak onto the shuttle, and Eggman repays Sonic for getting him his creative drive back and also gets to watch the chaos that unfolds as Sonic disrupts the event as the Phantom Rider, which he wanted to do before Sonic, Tails, and Amy were disqualified (and Eggman gets to watch the event that mocked him get disrupted).
Sonic causing trouble on purpose for the benefit of the greater good isn't out of character, he just isn't usually so chaotic about it, nor that intentioned about causing chaos, because what he's doing doesn't require a chaotic course of action. He does it in Sonic Adventure 2 to some degree (this is made most clear, in my opinion, in the recaps before each level) and he literally tells Merlina in Sonic and the Black Knight "Guess I can't be the hero every time!" after being told "If you remove that sword and defeat King Arthur with it, you shall forever be the worst of knights, slayer of kings!" and proceeds to fight the Knights of the Round Table and King Arthur. That's just in the games, if we factored other media into this there's a lot more I could cover.
Now, to be fair, that tends to not backfire on him as bad as it could. In Sonic X, when he's destroying Eggman's mirror towers, everyone eventually realizes that Sonic is doing it for the benefit of everyone else; he doesn't care about that though. In Sonic and the Black Knight, once Merlina admits she was essentially scamming Avalon, Lancelot, Percival, and Gawain team up with him to stop her. In Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic's already a fugitive, so him causing some level of chaos to clear his name isn't something that really affects public perception of him.
In the comics, specifically the Phantom Rider arc, it does backfire on him once he's revealed to be the Phantom Rider, and there's some indication in issue 76's solicitation that there are going to be long-term effects in regards to Sonic being the Phantom Rider, meaning this would be the first time Sonic feels long-term effects for playing the villain (I'm actually surprised it took this long but whatever lol). The aftershocks might not be as bad once Clean Sweep is revealed to be untrustworthy, but there are still likely going to be some trust issues within Sonic's friend circle, which will be the worst ramifications we've seen from Sonic's chaotic good antics thus far.
Sonic is not against working with Eggman if there's a level of mutual benefit in it, and usually it happens because of some potentially world-ending catastrophe (Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic X, Sonic Heroes, Sonic 06, Sonic Frontiers). I actually think Jimbotnik sums this up best; "If I can't rule the world, I might as well save it!" However, Eggman is not above teaming up with Sonic if, from his perspective, the need arises, even if the world isn't about to end. If there's even a shred of mutual benefit, they are willing to work together. The Phantom Rider arc just has an example of them teaming up for, on Eggman's end, petty reasons.
Eggman's not above teaming up with Sonic if there's mutual benefit and Sonic's not above playing a villain for the benefit of the greater good. Phantom Rider arc is not out of character for either of them.
#sonic the hedgehog#dr eggman#dr ivo eggman robotnik#dr ivo robotnik#idw sonic#sonic analysis#this post brought to you by: people on twitter claiming the phantom rider arc is ooc for eggman sonic or both#rambling about dumb twitter stuff on tumblr is more fun that it should be tbh

A painting I made early 2016 for a mentorship.
This is an interpretation of the Arthurian legend of Gawain and the Green Knight; I started without a clear plan for a story, and I let the process guide me along the way, ending up with some Norse Mythology influences.
This piece was significant for launching my career; It got me quite a bit of entry-level jobs, and helped get me seen as an artist. I may redo it one day.
Very excited for what 2024 will bring in terms of opportunities, Cheers!

Four Basic Steps for Effective Creative Visualisation 🌀🌀🌀
From Creative Visualisation by Shakti Gawain📚
Four Basic Steps for Effective
Creative Visualization
1. Set Your Goal
Decide on something you would like to have, work toward, realize, or create. It can be on any level — a job, a house, a relationship, a change in yourself, increased prosperity, a happier state of mind, improved health, beauty, or better physical condition, or whatever.
At first, choose goals that are fairly easy for you to believe in, that you feel are possible to realize in the fairly near future. That way you won't have to deal with too much negative resistance in yourself, and you can maximize your feelings of success as you are learning creative visualization. Later, when you have more prac-tice, you can take on more difficult or challenging prob-lems.
Creative Visualization
2. Create a Clear Idea or Picture
Create an idea or mental picture of the object or situation exactly as you want it. You should think of it in the present tense as already existing the way you want it to be. Picture yourself with the situation as you desire it now. Include as many details as you can.
You may wish to make an actual physical picture of it as well, by making a treasure map described in detail later). This is an optional step, not at all necessary, but often helpful (and fun!).
3. Focus on it Often
Bring your idea or mental picture to mind often, both in quiet meditation periods, and also casually throughout the day when you happen to think of it. In this way it becomes an integrated part of your life, it becomes more of a reality for you, and you project it more successfully.
Focus on it clearly, yet in a light, gentle way. It's important not to feel like you are striving too hard for it or putting an excessive amount of energy into it — that would tend to hinder rather than help.
4. Give it Positive Energy
As you focus on your goal, think about it in a posi-tive, encouraging way. Make strong positive statements to yourself: that it exists, that it has come or is now coming to you. See yourself receiving or achieving it.
These positive statements are called "affirmations." While you are using affirmations, try to temporarily suspend any doubts or disbelief you may have, at least for the moment, and practice getting the feeling that that which you desire is very real and possible.
Basics of Creative Visualization
Continue to work with this process until you achieve your goal, or no longer have the desire to do so. Remember that goals often change before they are realized, which is a perfectly natural part of the human process of change and growth. So don't try to prolong it any longer than you have energy for it — if you lose interest it may mean that it's time for a new look at what you want.
If you find that a goal has changed for you, be sure to acknowledge that to yourself. Get clear in your mind about the fact that you are no longer focusing on your previous goal. End cycle on the old, and begin cycle on the new. This helps you avoid getting confused, or feeling like you've "failed" when you have simply changed.
When you achieve a goal, be sure to acknowledge consciously to yourself that it has been completed. Often we achieve things which we have been desiring and visualizing, and we forget to even notice that we have succeeded! So give yourself some appreciation and a pat on the back, and be sure to thank the universe for fulfilling your requests.

Alone Together
Okay, so I'm in a Knuckles-focused discord server and we toss ideas back and forth like ping-pong balls, sometimes resulting in me vomiting out a little scene from it.
So for this one, we got talking about an event where the Master Emerald pulls ALL the versions of Knux into one place, ala Spiderverse style. Dread, naturally, would be seen as that one weird cousin no one really likes but has to invite anyway, and it got me thinking about maybe how Boom would deal with him. Here's the result.
Check out the Knucklesverse guide for more deets.
Enjoy!
~~~~~
The tall echidna stood in the room, looking around himself nervously. It was a large space, with strange architecture bordering the perimeter. He wasn’t exactly clear how he got here, but was certain it had something to do with the giant green gem hovering above their heads.
The Master Emerald.
He didn’t know how he knew what it was, but nonetheless, there the information was. There . . . a lot of information was, all of a sudden. It was as if his mind were a pool of water, with dozens of puzzle pieces floating haphazardly within it, and now those pieces had snapped into place properly.
For the first time in his life, Knuckles could think clearly.
It was . . . strange. Suddenly having new information in your head. Just . . . knowing things. Not as strange as being in a room with what appeared to be a lot of different versions of, well, yourself, but strange anyway.
He fidgeted with the wrappings around his hands—hands that had individually wrapped fingers instead of large mitts like all the other echidna in the room. They were like him, but . . . different. Each echidna had the same red fur, the same white crescent moon on his chest, and the same kinked tail. But they were all smaller than him, and some wore clothing. They were all technically “Knuckles”, but his mind conjured different names as his eyes floated over them.
OVA. Archie. Sinbad. StC. Sir Gawain. Classic. Prime. Modern. IDW. Renegade. Wachowski. Gnarly. Forces.
His brows furrowed. Those names didn’t make any sense, but he supposed they had to have some way of telling each other apart. They couldn’t exactly just call each other “Knuckles”, now could they? That would get confusing.
He thought about himself, and the word ‘Boom’ came to mind.
Huh. That’s . . . that’s weird.
Giving his head a shake, Boom watched as the smaller hims chatted and interacted. He’d been invited to join a few conversations, but had nothing to add when the other echidna spoke of their ‘guardian duties’. He wasn’t exactly sure what that meant, so he had simply wandered off.
And now he felt alone in this crowd. This collection of other versions of himself.
Boom sighed, wondering when he could go home. Not that he was eager to lose this newfound clarity in his mind, but being here made him feel odd. Like he was supposed to be part of this group, but just . . . wasn’t, for some reason.
The tall echidna rubbed the back of his neck, glancing around himself again, taking in the carvings on the walls. He’d never seen any of this before, but it seemed strangely familiar to him. He turned to look at the wall behind him, and found another Knuckles sitting against it, his knees drawn up to his chin.
A name came to his mind.
Dread.
The echidna was dressed like a pirate, and snarled at any of the other Knuckles’ who happened to glance his way. He was doing a pretty decent job of keeping himself isolated, but didn’t really look all that happy about it.
Boom was nothing if not friendly. He approached the little pirate, a little smile on his lips.
“Hey there, little guy,” he said, crossing his arms as he looked down at the other him. “Feeling kinda left out?”
Dread scoffed, keeping his eyes averted. “As though ye cared. All the others feel some sort of weird bonding with each other. I don't. I be nothin' like them.”
Boom tilted his head slightly, glancing back at the group of echidna behind him. Gnarly and Renegade chatted, while Modern and Classic listened in, nodding. Yeah, he supposed they were very similar in a lot of ways, so of course they'd get along. They were all the same person, technically speaking. They were him, and he was them.
It was really, really weird when he thought about it too much.
The taller echidna turned back to Dread, shrugging. “I'm not like them, either.”
Dread rolled his eyes, but still wouldn’t face Boom. “That’s a load o’ barnacles. Ye're more like them than ye realize. Don't patronize me, ya scallywag.”
Boom shrugged again as he lowered himself to sit cross-legged before Dread. “Most of them have something called the Master Emerald. I don't have anything like that. And I don't talk like them. I don't look like them. I mean, I kinda do, but I'm pretty different. But that doesn't mean it's bad, I don’t think.”
“All they see when they see me is a smelly, rotten pirate,” Dread sneered, baring his fangs at the others. “I don't belong here. They know it, and I know it.”
“Well,” Boom said, his brow furrowing as he thought. “Maybe they don't think you belong here, because you don't think you belong here.”
Dread turned to face Boom fully, his muzzle pulled into a snarl. “Are ye tryin' t' get into me head?” he growled. “Don't turn this around on me. I know I've done wrong. I know I can't be trusted. They know it, too. Why do ye want me t’ think otherwise?”
Silence settled over them, and Boom twisted his mouth as he thought. Why did he? There were plenty of other Knuckles' to be friends with, ones who were much more inviting and accepting of his friendship. So why was he focused on Dread? What did he care if this version of himself was left out and lonely?
“Maybe,” the taller echidna said, speaking slowly as he chose his words carefully. "Maybe it's because you're different, like me. Maybe I don't feel like I belong with the others either, because they're so much more serious and smarter and know what they're meant to do with their life. Maybe I see you, and I see a Knuckles who maybe doesn't have that sure path. Someone who's just trying to figure it out, like me."
Dread seemed to contemplate what his larger counterpart said. The ever-present furrow in his brow smoothed, and he flicked his violet eyes up to meet Boom's identical ones.
“Ye feel it, too?” he asked, his voice softer than Boom had ever heard it. “That feeling. Like there be somethin' missin' in yer life. But ye can't put ye're finger on what. And it be like a gnat, buzzin' in ye're ear. Always there, but slightly outta phase.”
Boom tilted his head, thinking about how Dread had phrased it. Finally he nodded.
“Yeah. That's kinda what it's like. Like . . . I know I should be doing something important. Something that matters. But . . .” He shrugged. “I don't know what.”
Dread lowered his head, resting his chin on his knees.
“I've always wanted to be someone important,” he said, his gaze dropping to float across the floor in front of him. “Be seen. Be recognized as the fiercest pirate in all the seven seas. The idea of being unknown is almost painful to me. And I thought the Prism Shard would do that. Suppose it did. But . . .” He shook his head, his brow furrowing. “It did something to me. And I wasn't happy. I didn't feel like me. Or the me I was supposed to be.”
Boom nodded slightly, glancing over his shoulder at the other echidnas. The other Knuckles'. The other hims. But they weren't him. It was weird. He turned back to the pirate with a sigh.
“They seem to have it all figured out, don't they? Even Gnarly and Renegade. They don't have one of those Master Emerald things, but they feel the pull from it and just know who they're supposed to be. But me? I feel it, but I don't FEEL it. Like, I know it's there, and it helps me feel . . . I dunno, more in step with the world around me. But it just doesn't feel like . . . like it's me.”
Dread nodded, uttering his own sigh. “Aye, it be like a hand on the back of ye're neck, guiding. But it feels wrong somehow. Like it was never meant for me.” He flicked his eyes up to Boom. “Us.”
Boom leaned forward, his brow furrowed slightly. “Does . . . does that mean there's something wrong with us?”
Dread didn't answer right away. He looked over at the other Knuckles'. They were so much more accepting of this new connection. This new duty of guarding the Master Emerald, and helping to balance chaos energy. It was all so strange to him. He still didn't fully understand it, or wrap his head around it all. Life was so much easier when all he had to worry about was his next treasure hunt, and keeping himself alive.
“I dunno, lad,” he said finally. “They all seemed to have fallen into step without question or doubt. Maybe that be the way it should be. Or maybe having some healthy fear and doubt about something different than you've always known be wiser.”
Boom gave a little snort of laughter. “I've never been accused of being smart,” he said, shaking his head. “Always been kind of an airhead my whole life.” He paused, a thoughtful look on his face. “But . . . I feel like I can think better now. Like my mind isn't all jumbled and noisy like it was before.”
Dread nodded, a nearly identical expression on his face. “Aye, I know what ye mean. My mind also be . . . quieter. It always felt like I had so much noise in my head, like some sort of buzzing or itchy feeling. But now . . . it be gone.”
The two sat quietly for a while, thinking their thoughts and shooting little glances over at the rest of their new tribe. A tribe of one, split into many. It was strange--being in a crowd but seeing your own eyes staring back at you, hearing variations of your own voice. The personalities were different, but there was that similarity, deep down at their core.
“Thank ye,” Dread said, startling Boom from his thoughts. “For sittin' with me. They all mistrust me because of what I did on my world. And to be fair, I can't blame them. I was . . . pretty bad. I wasn't thinkin' straight.”
Boom smiled, giving him a shrug. “Hey, don't worry about it. When you have a noisy, itchy brain, you do things you probably wouldn't now. I'm usually ignored on my world, because, like I said, airhead.”
Dread smirked, his gold tooth glinting in the light. “I don't think ye're an airhead. Ye seem pretty wise, to me.”
Boom chuckled. “And you don't seem like some smelly ol' pirate to me. Just a guy who maybe needed a friend.”
The pirate chuckled back, and held his hand out. “Aye. We are well met, Boom.”
Boom reached out to complete the handshake. “Right back atcha, Dread.”
You mentioned on a post about Sauron inventing Black Speech that you're a linguist - are you comfortable elaborating?
I'd love to know more, as an informal but dedicated linguist myself. Always curious about how people get into languages.
@oroniel So, here we go. It's going to be long!
I love languages. I'm fascinated by all their aspects - the development over time, the way they influence each other, how they often reflect the speakers as a group at a certain point in time, and the system of a language as such.
At the university I studied English and German, but not pure linguistics, I majored in translation and interpreting (loved the first, hated the other, because those two require differently wired brains, and my brain is definitely a translator's brain).
While at university, I also learned French, Latin, Swedish, Old English and ivrit (these days I am in awe, I barely manage ONE language course now), and sometimes just read grammar of others just out of curiousity - Gothic and Breton, maybe others, can't remember now! These days I sometimes read on Old Norse and and look up words in Proto-Germanic, not really learning, just having fun.
I also started translating Sir Gawain and the Green Knight into Slovak, a project that I abandoned once I started working, but at that time I was very good at that particular dialect of Middle English and it was a great exercise in translating poetry (and translating in general).
Of course I have forgotten most of the above as it happens when you don't practice. When I came to Luxembourg I had to start learning French again, and took Italian later on, but my Mum had Alzheimer's, and it took its toll on my brain, so I ended up not being able to do that at one point. This year I'm not working (unpaid leave), so I FINALLY started learning Luxembourgish. I was a bit afraid, but my brain cooperates, I'm just rather tired after each class.
I also have to mention that when I was watching my favourite Chinese drama (The Story of Yanxi Palace), I started recognising words and even deduced some very basic grammar rules (confirmed by a colleague who studied Chinese), which made me immensely proud. I love deciphering a system, that's for sure.
I do not expect to learn anything beyond Luxembourgish at a level of being able to hold a basic conversation, and maybe come back to Italian one day. I'm not getting younger, and my brain is chronically tired.
I have always admired Tolkien, the natural linguist, not only for the sheer amount of languages he knew, but for the amazing job he did on his conlangs. That's just. WOW.
Oh, and I love Black Speech, I know it's supposed to be ugly, but it doesn't sound ugly to me. My HC is that Mairon based it partially on Valarin (his first language, and one that sounded unpleasant to the Elvish ears, and thus Quenya was born), just making it simpler. Imagine my JOY when I found out that the word for ring in Valarin is... naškad. Not dissimilar to nazg, is it? :)
And of course Black Speech is a language that has no exceptions, because our darling Maia is such a perfectionist. It's a pity we only have but a few words and sentences. And I NEED to know what Halbrand said to that warg! Hopefully we will learn in time.
Hi! I really want to read the vulgate cycle but I have a hard time staying focused when reading it. Are there any sections of the vulgate that are not as important to the understanding or able to skip? Thank you so much for making all these stories accessible and thanks for your reply :))
Hello my friend! This is a great question and one I get a lot. The Vulgate Cycle is long and daunting, but I can help you navigate it!
Firstly, here is the full Vulgate Cycle PDF collection for everyone to read. Secondly, I'll summarize what you can do, and elaborate below a cut.
TL;DR
If reading a PDF, use CTRL+F to find your favorite character's name/stories.
If reading a physical copy, utilize the index (located at the very end of the Post Vulgate) to find them.
Discover chapters of interest from the summary page (also located at the very end of the Post Vulgate).
Skip The History of the Holy Grail and begin with The Story of Merlin or Lancelot I.
Now, let's break down the ways you can navigate the Vulgate Cycle step by step.
CTRL+F
This option will certainly be less effective if your favorite character is a prominent one such as Lancelot or Gawain as they appear a million times. However, if you want to learn more about someone else, say, the Lady of the Lake, you can search her up and find every instance of her appearance. Like so.
Index
In the very back of the final book of the Post Vulgate, there's an Index listing every named character [Ex: Gawain], location [Ex: Orkney Isles], entity [Ex: Holy Spirit], animal [Ex: Gringalet the horse], and language [Ex: Hebrew] mentioned in the entirety of the Vulgate Cycle. There you'll find a list of which book/chapter/page they appear in. Here are all the mentions of Gawain's horse in The Book of Merlin.
Chapter Summaries
Each book of the Vulgate Cycle has a Table of Contents with the chapter numbers and long, descriptive titles. That alone may give you an indication of what you want to read. However, at the back of the Post Vulgate, right before the Index, there's a list of every chapter in the Vulgate Cycle with a summary of events. That will give you more detail and may help you decide if you want to read in full.
Skip
If it sucks, hit da bricks. The beauty of the Vulgate Cycle is that you don't need The History of the Grail or The Book of Merlin to understand what comes later. I enjoy them because History gives a ton of background to the religious themes the Grail Quest will eventually explore and sets up all the motifs way in advance and Merlin has the Orkney Bros as well as Yvain and Sagramore as kids which is fun. But the fact is you can begin with Lancelot I and you won't be lost. Lancelot I was written first, Merlin is a prequel, so it's optional, and the motifs of the Grail Quest are going to be heavy handed when you get there anyway without the added stuff from History. That's hundreds of pages you can skip if you want to! Norris J. Lacy, the head editor, and his translation team did a phenomenal job with footnotes throughout, so if a character off-handedly refers back to something, you can rely on them to leave a little note at the bottom for you to refresh your memory with. It'll even give you a chapter/page number if you want to refer back yourself. Here's a footnote referring to Agravaine's unnamed amie [his ladylove] who helped wing woman her sister to romance Gawain. That was 4 chapters prior to this moment.
So there are plenty of ways to navigate the Vulgate Cycle and make it more digestible. That being said, it's translated so beautifully by Lacy and his team, that it reads like a modern novel. I have no doubt that once you get started, you'll become invested, and find it much easier to work through than you first thought. It's long-winded and character dense but it's fun. I do hope you're able to read it and understand why I love it so much! Thanks for this ask and I hope this helps. Have a great day!
