if i were a child again, i would be lying on the bed frame of my grandmother’s 8-levelled apartment in china. an old, wooden thing, my body separated by nothing but a thin sheet, small bones of my frame aching. for some reason, there was no mattress in that room.

a singular fan whirls loudly above, the white planes coated in speckles of dust and rusted metal.

the air is humid from the afterthought of rain, and the fabric chequered with knockoff cartoons sticks to my skin.

still, i sleep comfortably, dreaming of rainbow-frosted cakes and dozing kittens.

still, i will complain about it the next day, and my parents will relent and nestle the small body of a child between the two of them in the hotel room.

if i were a child again, my mother would still love me.

i see the way her face contorts at cropped t-shirts and tomboyish haircuts. how her lip curves downwards at my willingness to stuff and bundle my skin into too-tight clothes. the way she mourns the body of a child she could once carry in her arms and raise to the sky, sunlight blazing against long, dark hair.

now it’s too tall, lanky. bones jutting out awkwardly in her hold.

miserable in the new temperament, the venomous words spat at her that a child would never know the existence of yet. the skin of her hand crackles, wrinkles pinching at the joints from the chemicals in the laundry detergent, from the relentless scrubbing at a stain that will never leave. the hand reaches out towards her daughter still, and she runs, further. hair that slips through her fingers is chopped off.

she loves me still, tolerates the tantrums, buys the clothes, and pays for the haircuts.

she prefers the child.

my mother always preaches how similar i am to my father, the slope of our noses, the glimmer of dark pupils.

we both know i am more like her. the silvery laughter, the poisonous words. the ways our faces both darken at the sight of each other. or perhaps that is my wistful thinking.

"alright, whatever we're starting now. twin give us the count down" agent starts to count down from three and you immediately go for the flour "also i forgot to mention that someone-" you glare at Duke pouring at least 1 cup of flour in your bowl "forgot the buttermilk" for some reason the first thing Kai did was spray his bowl with pam which Duke notices "the fuck?" he stops pouring the sugar in his bowl to look at Kai because for some reason the next thing he decides to do is pour in the milk.

"see unlike these two idiots, i know that your supposed mix the dry ingredients first" you say glancing up at the camera "where are the spoons?" you look around the table as Kai lifts his head and winces "oh shitttttt- my bad yall"

you then smack your lips "fuck it" you start to mix the dry mix with your hands after doing that you grab the vegetable oil and pour just a little inside "ice spice is so fine" Kai grabs an egg cracking it inside "she wants me to be in her new music video" Duke furrows his eyebrows grabbing the oil from you "you?" you grab the carton of eggs from Kai's side of the table "yes. me nigga" kai smacks his lips as you accidentally bump into him knocking almost half his mixture out of his bowl "my bad"

after playing around for a little bit time eventually runs out and the three of you attempt to create at least a few decent pancakes "we have syrup right?" Kai asks "duh why the fuck would we have pancakes and no syrup?" Duke responds to Kai. he smacks his lips and his brows come together as he starts to get irritated "bro didn't you forget the buttermilk?" "didn't u forget the spoons?" "okay but at least-"

"oh my god both of y'all shut the fuck up."

you all finish up your pancakes in separate rooms to create a little bit of suspense and to see who pancakes turned out the best and after setting the camera back up it was time to present.

"hey guys" agent waves at the camera as he fixes the flash "i'm going to be the judge of everyone waffles" you look up and fixes his statement "pancakes" "same difference"

"why the fuck is it hard?" agent tries to cut Kai black ass pancake with a knife but it doesn't budge "and black" Duke adds trying to get Kai eliminated but the way your twin was struggling to slice it was already enough. "you see it was a visual representation of my sister" Kai uses his arms to explain as you step forward "nigga u tryna be funny? alls i see is a black ass blob"

agent ends up picking up the mess with his hand, but it was so hard he couldn't even take a bite..

"alright next." he moves over next to you and removes the lid on top of your plate and he immediately begins laughing. Duke and Kai comes up to see what so funny as they soon realized what you created "i was inspired by the song peaches and eggplants featuring sexyy red and mulatto" your white girl voice comes back as you hold up the plate for the camera to see. obviously it was a peach and eggplant you even took the time to color your batter but what agent found so hilarious was the powdered sugar and whip cream spread across the peach and syrup leaking from the tip of the eggplant.

"alright, alright cmon lemme taste it" he grabs a fork and begins to slice through "hey!! i can cut through this one!" So RWRB is basically part of my identity now, I can't remember how many times I've seen the movie, and I'm on a constant quest of getting my friends to watch it too. And it's working!

I actually started your original works through UTGold and then UTB before deciding to start all the way back from SAL (yea idk how i figured out that order either lmao) and now I've finally reached the end of it with TND! And now rereading UTB again, I realised just how much whiplash there is with Temsen in both stories. Don't get me wrong, the vibe is the same. But he's so much more threatening as a peak alpha compared to his vench self, and it's also funny bc in TND you had to almost permanently hold hands with him to stop him from collapsing. I wanted to ask how much of his TND self is similar in UTB? Are there parallels in how he grew up or his family structure? After reading TND I've kinda liked to imagine he comes from a really remote but close knitted community, and that has influenced how he views the secondary genders differently (and less discriminatory) compared to others.

Ps. I will always rmb Gywn's official debut appearance being him marching up to Santa's workshop xD

This is so interesting to me! I almost feel like you're talking about a different character - I know you're not, but these are all the ways I feel like Temsen is actually the same amount of threatening in both stories in different ways. Like, Temsen is the one who:

Threatens to go to war with the Unseelie Court and King and implies very heavily that he would win.

Which is then confirmed when the Raven Prince candidly tells Gwyn that Temsen is much stronger than he is, and that he has a lot to learn from the vench but,

Understands he never will because they don't want him to.

Temsen is the one who physically supports Gwyn while walking.

Temsen is the only one in the world strong enough to heal Gwyn.

Stronger than even the Raven Prince or his healers or any of the other vench.

It's strongly implied that if there were hierarchy among the vench he'd be a prince, but it's clear when he interacts with the Raven Prince, he behaves more like a very strong king.

He literally lectures the Raven Prince more than once free of consequence because of how powerful he is.

Like, yes, Temsen was vench, and needed a lot of intimacy to stay healthy (although - not constantly! And he's also the one who asks for it and decides how it happens), but imho Temsen to me is actually a lot more threatening in The Nascent Diplomat because he literally takes on the Raven Prince and the Raven Prince is the one who yields and basically goes 'oh no no you're totally right we don't want war haha you're so much stronger than me oh my god.'

Idk for me if you get much more threatening than 'squares up against the Raven Prince and wins so easily there's not even an exchange of magic because everyone just knows how strong Temsen is.'

His needing intimacy to live imho is just not a sign of weakness or doesn't detract from his being powerful or threatening in The Nascent Diplomat. It would be like forcing the Raven Prince into the sea - he still needs to breathe air, it's not a sign of weakness, it doesn't make him less threatening (at least to me! It's just occurred to me that people having basic needs and needing them met might seem like it detracts from someone's personal power which is like, something I've never thought of before, because everyone has basic needs and needs them met, even the world's worst dictators - i.e. being threatening exists completely independently to that in my mind).

I definitely think he has strong family support in both stories, but otherwise to me both Temsens are extremely similar. Both:

Weaponise cheerfulness to gain control.

Are the most powerful person in the room while pretending they aren't.

Are strong enough to make executive decisions and override other people if they need to (esp around someone's health)

Are healers

Enjoy sex but aren't bound to any one person and like it that way

Do not need to be bombastic about showing off just how powerful they are

Use kindness and compassion as a form of manipulation, especially in matters of health

Infodump at times

Feel very passionately about ethics, health and politics

Are relatively open minded and quick to apologise, but sometimes still do harm simply as a result of holding so much power

Tbh, for me personally, Temsen is one of the characters who needs to change the least to become a peak alpha, and I actually invented the 'peak alpha' designation specifically for him, because I knew he'd be stronger than pretty much all the other alphas. I later added Gary / Augus / Crielle etc. to that list, and then Gwyn because I thought it would be funny. But peak alphas exist because Temsen does!

Obviously how I see the characters isn't how everyone else will! But yeah in my mind, they're both so similar I don't have to change nearly anything about Temsen's personality, even down to him having a more visceral reaction to other alpha pheromones because he's so strong in UtB, is a direct parallel to Temsen having higher intimacy needs because he's so strong in TND. One just naturally flowed into the other!
