I’ll split this between boys and maybe give some love about Larry as a unit at the end too. Watch out, it’s gonna be a long one.

Louis: I love so much about this man. He is just so… interesting. There’s no one like him.

Watching him grow up over the years… wow. He’s so complex, has so many sides to him, and is a bit of a chameleon - being able to adjust into any social situation and being able to make friends with just about anyone, while still being himself. He’s so damn strong, and fights so hard for what he believes in and who he loves. He just is so caring and will throw himself under the bus solo over taking anyone down with him. He sacrifices himself for the ones around him, no matter what consequences that has.

Even without talking about Larry, you could tell he was immediately the natural leader of the band. He has everyone wrapped around his finger, but doesn’t take advantage of that (unless it’s for pranks hehe). He’s so very protective, and he fought against 1d’s team and Cowell hard. He threw himself into the wrath of that asshole, just to try and ensure the others had it easier. He didn’t care what that meant for him. Even if Cowell through him out of the band, which I’m sure he was close to multiple times, he’d rather that than the others take the blame or get into trouble (

Also, all the boys have stated how vital and strong he is, and how he truly grew into himself after being so shy and then just… blossoming. They were big parts of that, but Louis truly just.. took the reins, made the most of it, and tried so hard to see the best in things. Niall says here (3:10 onwards… ignore that shitty Aus interviewer, he’s fucking useless) about how Louis was self deprecating in an interview and he shouldn’t be hard on himself, because they all adore him and he’s an “extremely vital part of one direction”. Here’s Liam talking about how crucial Louis was to the band, and how he persevered without being the front man or singing a lot at the beginning, but he made the best decisions for the band and that leant him more into the business side of it all.

He’s an incredible writer, too. Truly just… very interesting with his genres. He brought 1d to a wider demographic and audience by not following the stock standard general boyband vibes, and gave them more maturity and edge and complexity by the end of it. While a lot was still collabs, he brought his own sound so strongly. You can TELL when it’s his writing, and that is such a special thing that a lot of artists haven’t been able to master.

While I do agree he has lost a fair bit of his flamboyancy and has quite a strong barrier around him (walls…) before truly letting people in, he’s done that simply to protect himself and that’s a really important and valuable thing to do, particularly when he’s always in the public eye, he learnt how to manage that appropriately to keep his personal life, and his heart, under armour.

He’s also just… cheeky as fuck. And the stories I was told about when he was in Aus… very funny. Very down to earth, loves indulging in some beers and smoking a J and I adore him.

Also, his vibe. Shit. He just… draws people in when they’re around him. While yes, I am a fan, even if I wasn’t and we’d made eye contact backstage like we did, I would’ve been frozen to the spot. He’s powerful, confident, a little cocky, but also soft, gentle, and caring. He’s also been through some rough hardships dealing with trauma and family/personal losses, but still comes out the other end. An incredibly strong human being.

Harry: Harry is… so layered as well. Both of these boys are very complex and I would put that down by having to hide, being controlled, and shoved in the public eye at a very young age. But Harry came out the other end a little differently than Louis did.

Harry has always been so open and caring, driven and focused, but also has an off switch as opposed to Louis. Behind the scenes, Harry drops the stage persona (which a lot of it is truly him, but you know what I mean), and comes back to himself. He calms down, and stays calm, and puts other people first and gives them plenty of space and privacy. He values his privacy so much, and values his personal life to a point that you can truly tell how genuine he is, and how much he doesn’t want to pull the people he really cares about into the spotlight to deal with the public like he has to.

He also is a different level of fame to Louis. Harry has his every move scrutinised and ogled at and yet he continues to be himself and wear whatever tf he wants to, and makes a statement. He’s very loud. He dances ridiculously and wears awful sparkly jumpsuits and writes a lot of songs that still pay homage to the 1d days. And also, career wise, you can tell when he chooses to make decisions for himself.

Releasing SOTT as a single, for example. That song should have (marketing wise) been an album song. It should’ve been about 3/4 through the album, to balance out the fun pop. It shouldn’t have been released as a first single to solidify his solo career, and I can guarantee he was advised against that. But he did it for himself. He didn’t do that shit for anyone else.

He also is just a giggly little cheeky mess. A natural flirt, who can be cocky and confident and grab whoever he’s talking to’s attention, just by looking at them. But in saying this, he genuinely cares about what people have to say when they’re talking with him. He makes a lot of eye contact, often stays quiet for a moment or two after someone has finished talking to give them the time to finish, but also to carefully consider what he’s about to say next. And yeah, you could put this down to media training, but he makes sure the other person is heard and has the platform to speak to him, like he’s just another guy. He is very genuine like that, and he makes people feel important by doing so.

He’s also a romantic. He looooves love and values it above all else, in my opinion. He also just loves freedom. To be who he is, to spread his wings, to be the centre of attention even though he doesn’t really mean to. To be himself. He truly doesn’t hide under a mask anymore (closeting aside).

And if you’ve been around forever, you can see he’s not queerbaiting or whatever tf. He just lets it loose on stage but doesn’t need to be that person all the time. He is far more quiet and shy and giggly than the media gives him credit for. He just… is himself off stage as well, but the more reserved side, because he gets it all out on stage and it’s the one place he can truly release that energy bc of his glass closet. He doesn’t have to pretend on stage, he doesn’t have a stunt gf all over him when he’s up there, he can just be that loud side of him that shows who he is. That shows how proud he is.

He’s a frontman, he loves performing, and takes the chance to again, make people feel important when they’re speaking to him. Like he truly does care. He listens to his fans in the crowd, spends a ridiculous amount of time talking to them, and values us for always being there and seeing through the bullshit of his image. He’s also very hardworking, as Niall says (3:25 onwards).

Larry: I mean… Jesus Christ. How lucky are those two to find each other? To form an instant connection and look at each other like that? God, even if you forget about the romance of it, just that deep and powerful connection, is definitely a form of soulmates for me. How happy they are together, how touchy feely (Louis is so physically affectionate and Harry loooooves it) they are, and how protective they are of each other.

Being shoved into a situation like 1d, is hard for any of those boys, and with closeting on top? God damn they fought hard. And Louis is, and always has been, so protective of Harry who is his baby hehe. So to be there and gently guide Harry, a naive and shy 16 year old, through the treacherous grounds that is the music industry, is extremely important and a bond for life.

The instant connection between them, the mirroring, the drawing each other in no matter how big the room is, the gentleness, the rowdiness, the love… god. Even if you don’t believe in larry, you see it between them. The connection was always there. And both Harry and Louis have fought so hard for it. They came out the other end stronger and more powerful than ever. They didn’t crack. They didn’t break. They supported each other and helped each other and held onto each other.

And that’s what true love really is about.

Ima hop in talking to throw my two sense about this major break that’s coming up for 5sos, anonymously as someone who runs a anonymous 5sos confessions blog.

There’s a lot of new people in this fandom who’ve never experienced a 5sos break, and still have trauma from either 1D or other bands who took a break and then disbanded before the reunion. Or are fans of bands who are also in a limbo and are worried about what’s going to happen. (Looking at 1975 fans, I wish the best for yall)

And I’m a mixture of both! I was here for the first break, but drifted into other music genres during it, and kinda forgot about 5sos for a while, but came back within the last 3 years.

Plus for those who were here for the first break - there’s a lot of different factors that add into the uncertainty this time, like Michael becoming a dad!

There’s a lot of feelings being thrown around in the music industry of what happens before/during breaks that adds to what a break means now vs when the first break happened. It’s just… a lot.

Okay, look, I'm nice and I'm understanding but right now I'm gonna sound like a bitch and I don't care. Whatever experience anyone has with any other band doesn't matter. What happened with one direction is different from what is happening with the 1975, that's different from what happened with big time rush, that's different from what happened to why don't we, that's different from what happened to the Jonas brothers, I can keep going but you catch my drift. They are different bands, formed by different people, in different ways, with different believes and way to make music. No one thought backstreet boys were ever gonna come back and they just did a world tour, NSYNC was seen together just last month for the first time in YEARS, bands can take breaks and reform and regroup and move on if they want. I think this expectation that you're owed content all of the time is crazy. Album cycles shouldn't be just month long things. They should be allowed to work on something for longer. They should be allowed to not tour every 6 months. 5sos released 5 album in 10 years. An album every 2 years is a fucking good number. But even if it takes them another 2, 3, 5 years, it's their right as humans to take as much space as they want. I understand why people might be scared, but no one has the right to demand anything from anyone. Maybe Luke and Ashton will release more solo music, maybe they'll go on a tour, maybe Calum will drop a poetry book, maybe we won't see them for 5 years and then they'll announce the announcement of a new song. They can do whatever they want. You can't honestly expect to have access or content or tour at all times. They are grown men with lives and families who worked hard to learn how to exist outside a band they started when they were teenagers.

And yes, Michael is gonna be a father, but one, he's not the first musician ever to have a kid so that doesn't mean anything, but you also can't expect him to not be there for his daughter. Baby girl Clifford should be his priority but in nowhere is stated that you can't be a father and a musician.

And to compare 5sos to one direction is not a fair comparison, one direction was formed in a reality show by people who only wanted to explore them. 5sos were friends first and they are still friends first. Maybe they won't drop an album every year anymore. Maybe they won't make a tour with 101 concerts in less than 8 months. But that doesn't make them any less of a band, it they are doing shorter tours and longer album cycles.

Also, if they break up, they broke up, we can't force them to stay a band.

But I stand by the fact that these men went through quarantine, lost a whole record with calm due to an internal error, dropped their label, their management, both Ashton and Luke released solo albums, with Luke signing a 3 record deal if I'm not mistaken , Michael got signed as a dj and a producer, and they still released a whole album independently that was made the way they wanted. If they were gonna stop being a band they would've done in it in 2020. They're allowed whatever breaks they want or need. They are real humans. And they are not one direction.

But this break they are taking is something that they planned around it, or do you think it's an accident the tour ended just in time for Michael to be back home for the birth of his daughter? This tour wasn't scheduled, they could've not done it. But they chose to do it. But to look at them and accuse of being about to breakup and lying about it because they are taking a break for a very specific and unbelievably valid reason is bullshit.

I don't care about whatever trauma you may have about other bands. What happened to other bands happened to other bands. You can't make a different situation about them because it's never gonna be the same because there's different people involved.

Is their life. Their choice. We're just along for the ride. It's a hell of a good one so far and if this is it so be it. It's their choice.

And honestly, if you're actually this affected by one direction breaking up and this is not just some exaggeration for the bit or a joke, get help.

Going back in time with 1d! part 3-4

Part 3: the basement

a-a-a circular thing that was in the middle of the basement. A green light shining out from it. “woah” you whispered under your breath. You slowly walked over to it; eyes wide. You weren’t sure what to do…so, you stepped on it and there was this whole thing that happened right in that moment it kind of closed in on you there were now walls keeping you inside. You tried to push out of it, but it just wouldn’t barge. Then these weird letters popped up on the screen “whoa” it read; time with different years and times. And then it read place with a text bar where you could right down the exact place…it seemed to be a…time machine. She put in the data and then…” whoa” she screamed and out of nowhere she was in…(where ever 1d was doing there concert….). she was Infront of the building getting rammed by thousands of people. She saw her wrist that was shoved outside of the gate that was supposed to be BLOCKING people from getting past it…but it was failing. Your wrist had a green band on it…it was to MEET 1D!! what!

Part 4: backstage

You had never been to a 1d concert but this…this was by far the best day of your life. And it was time to go backstage to see the members…you were shaking, heart racing as the security guard led you to the room where you were going to meet…you weren’t exactly sure what you were going to say when you met them, but you did wanna see their reaction when they hear what their futures are going to be like. So, you decided you were gonna tell them…as the security guard opens the door harry runs up to you and embraces you in a warm and tight welcome hug that you really enjoyed. “Hello, love I’m harry” his voice soft as if you didn’t already know. His eyes were soft, and he was even more beautiful in person…he smelt like a flower or like the ocean…fresh it was nice. “um, I’m Y/N” and then louis runs up to you from the red couch he was just laying on “Ello, love” (say it in a British accent and it’ll sound just like he says it like Ello)  “hey” you respond shyly next up was Niall putting his hand out to shake his eyes not leaving yours and then Liam and Zayn where Zayn did his cute “vas happening” thing…you all began sitting down talking about pretty much nothing and then harry asked where you were from and you said “well, I’m not from…here…well, like I’m not from here, here, like I’m from a different time….um…” harry raised an eyebrow as Niall was eating chips that where in a closed bag he had found under the couch as all attention left you and to Niall…which is where you became worried there was something seriously wrong with Niall “what…I was hungry” Niall responded with his mouth full of chips “anyway…Y/N, um, you sure your ok??? Have you fallen under my spell and now you don’t know how to handle it??” he winks at you, making you laugh…Liam looking at him like he’s insane “harry…not the time…do you have any proof Y/N?”

You looked shocked he even cared to know “well I have a couple things to show you…but…I can’t show you here…” you say worried “ok…well, here’s my number…um…nialls…harrys…and zayns, and louis…tell us when you wanna meet up. Ok?” and then the guard came to get you and you took the numbers and walked out to wondering how you're going to get back so instead you got a hotel room and looked for a theater near by…

Yeah I wonder though how's gonna be watch Louis tell his history if he can't reference the biggest reason why he was so heavily held back since 1D. Like, is this gonna be honest enough if the "struggling" on his career is to be left in the dark by his bandmates after the hiatus? I'd love to hear him talking about success, industry, choices and happiness but focusing on how he's a great daddy while maintaining a laddy lad image and painting a part of his fans as deluded might not be my cup of tea

Mhmm I know what you mean, it’s a bit unsettling. Maybe I haven’t learned my lesson after so many years around here and I'm being way too optimistic about the entire thing, but I don't think Louis is the kind of person that wants to tell half-truths. Especially in this kind of documentary format and the fact we know he has been holding back and biting his tongue a lot through the years, out of One Direction he’s the one who talked less about all the struggles. So I’m really choosing to be optimistic about it and giving him the benefit of the doubt, since I believe AOTV is Louis finally doing things his way. This is the opportunity he has been waiting for, I fully believe he was given a chance to clear things out and speak up before, but he didn’t. I understand the concern about Larry, and maybe we will have him tip-toeing around it but to be honest IMO Larry is just the tip of the iceberg. I still think he can be entirely honest and tell us a lot about himself without necessarily having to exposing in details what him and Harry went through. This is a great opportunity for rebranding and new narratives (real ones) and you know… finally taking a turn and being publicly something he’s more comfortable with. Baby steps. Anything is possible and I think this is a step forward and not a step back.

omg I loved it!! Like overall it was so beautifully done and u can really see it was done with care and thoughtfulness! it follows the timeline chronologically pretty well although it kind of goes 2010 to 2016 and then skips to 2019 to 23 so that gap kind of stays unknown but it is said that those were very difficult years for louis.

it starts with the 1d stuff and it goes pretty deep in how louis lived the beginning and the end of it! like we hear the story of how he didn't sing at all in wmyb and how he had worked with the producer for the 2nd single and they worked hard to get his verse right and then in the final cut he found out that they had given it to harry (😑) and how at that moment he felt like no matter what he did it wasn't gonna be good enough :( but that's also how he started writing bc all he ever wanted was to feel like he had a place in the band :( and then it cuts to 2015 and their last performance and there's a very telling video of him after the performance and he was so fucking sad (also I wonder what that footage was for ? bc it looked like they were making something then too) and in the voice-over he says that he was feeling angry and lost bc he felt like he finally had his place and he didn't want it to end (!!!) and then OLI MY BEST FRIEND!! says how only certain band members wanted it to end but louis didn't (we been knew but I'm glad oli is well aware and not scared to say it) and then we even hear lottie and his grandparents talk about the huge loss that losing 1d was for him.

I actually found it interesting that they had that first segment about 1d then right after his mom and then felicitè and they talked about all of those as the most important losses of louis' life so u really can see how big of a loss the breakup was for him :/ it was truly a part of him

then there's the part about his mum with his grandparents talking and I legitimately cried when his grandpa was talking bc it was all so sad and touching but also u can really feel how much they LOVE and admire louis and in general in all the family clips and interviews u really see how he is the core of his whole family and how much he loves them all. it's so beautiful

I loved the bits with his sisters too! the twins talked about how much he looks after them and how sometimes he's a bit too much but it's only bc he cares so much :(( and lottie said "he was made to be a big brother for many sisters " and I was like SO TRUE !!!! he literally is ! and helene called him GENTLE AND KIND !! which is also SO TRUE 😭😭 I love him sm

also I was surprised that they talked more about felicite bc he never said anything but God :( lottie talked about how louis and her tried to help her and how guilty she felt bc she couldn't and how louis must have felt it even more 😔😔

and in the middle of all of the parts there's oli interviews which are the best bc he truly gives such an insight on louis and like u can totally see why they're so close !! he understands louis a lot ! and he even says his job is to try to keep louis' life together lmao 😭😭

I loved the part about the beginning of the walls era bc u see how difficult that was for him and many aspects of it was stuff that we didn't know about! like there are clips from some of the earlier promo performance where Louis says that he hated it and hated performing and u can really see how much he beat himself up for his mistakes and that only starts changing with the ccme performance and then only at the Scala gig he's like I actually loved that!! I was really surprised about that like I had guessed from his stage presence and in general by everything that he wasn't really comfortable but he literally says taht at one point he couldn't wait to get out :(( and helene is like that's what u need to work on bc u actually love singing!! and u can see how it all changes with tour and how much she was right bc his voice keeps getting better as he gets happier mentally <3 the body truly does keep the score of our trauma!

I also loved the band bits and u can see how significant it is for the guys that louis sleeps in the same bus as them and involves them in day off activities and how tight and loving the atmosphere is on tour

also the fans interviews were lovely!! I especially liked a segment they did on how fans formed friendships and lived great experiences through the fandom and louis! u can really see how much louis loves that and it's beautiful bc it just reinforces one of louis' core messages which is how important people and love are <33

the entire Freddie segment was BEAUTIFUL it is the part that my non louie friend was most impressed by bc u can really tell how much louis loves him and vice versa, also how important Freddie is for him! and he's such A GOOD DAD!! so loving and affectionate, he is always telling him that he loves him and asking for kisses and it was so 😭 that kid will be such a wonderful person. and louis even showed him that he was crying after the la show bc he saw him in the crowd ! :(( truly beautiful (and great parenting especially for a boy!)

there wasn't a lot about his career difficulties (as I expected) but it's still hinted at that he had more than one issue with the labels and all that side of things :/ also found it interesting that helene mentioned that people in management etc in 1d didn't like him bc they thought he was arrogant and wanted to be the front man when all he was arguing for was just Equal and fair opportunities and even his grandparents talk about how it wasn't fair how he was treated in the band and that even if louis didn't talk about it they could see it hurt him... sigh

I'm sure I'll remember more as soon as I post it but for now I think that's enough skdk it's beautiful! it's telling and it's real ! go watch it and enjoy louis in all his wonderful aspects!

also there are the parts about liam at ccme and niall in Mexico and they talk about when louis went to see him etc and it was interesting how niall seemed awkward in front of the camera talking about it lol? meanwhile it was sad when louis watched liam the first night and then louis was in his room and he asked if he'd stay to watch him but liam had to fly to LA :/// kind of explains how all of them have treated louis for all these years tbh, maybe that's what triggered that apology from liam and tbh louis definitely deserves one from all of them .

Louis has such an amazing writing style and his lyrics are always incredible but something I’ve always loved is the way he carries the same themes/ motifs throughout his writing. Even looking back on songs from 1D that he wrote on there are clear indicators that he wrote on it because of the themes, lyrics or style of the song often you can tell by the bridge too my man never misses with a bridge he constructs them like no other.

An example of motifs is his use of religious imagery or language in his songs.

‘There’s a devil in your smile that’s chasing me’ // the priest thinks it’s the devil’ // ‘it’s a church of burnt romances’ // ‘im too far gone to pray’ // ‘the devil in my brain’ // ‘demons, I’m taking all of my demons’ - it’s interesting how this is a consistent theme and there’s phew so much to unpack in these songs and their connotations themselves but the lyrics are so emotive. As someone who has a religious background the use of religious imagery is actually something I love because it’s something I pick up on quite quickly. Louis often talks about ‘the devil’ a devil or demon is a crafty creature a ‘fallen angel’ a trickster his use of talking to someone and saying ‘there’s a devil in your smile’ is almost him saying ‘I’m gonna regret this but you’re so tempting and I can’t escape you, I also don’t want to’

‘The priest thinks it’s the devil’ in End of the day Louis is demonstrating loving someone, you can’t help but love that person there’s no escape again linking back to ‘the devil in your smile that’s chasing me’ not to mention the religious trauma that comes along with this line, ‘the priest’ thinks you’re sick your possessed and incurable, because you can’t in fact change who you love. This then links to ‘the devil in my brain’ now remember how in End of the day Louis was being told he was possessed well here’s Louis acknowledging this ‘demon’ he hears the demon in his head this incurable part of him he can’t escape and he can’t help but to listen to this demon because he can’t help who he is as he addresses in End of the day. In Only the brave (which is a song full of queer connotation and religious trauma and imagery) Louis again addresses how he’s ‘too far gone to pray’ how this ‘church of struggles of romances that have burnt to bright but then been put out too soon’ makes him feel like he couldn’t possibly pray he is a possessed man remember the priest has told him that he is wrong, this song addresses the deep trauma of coming to accept how hard it is to love so honestly ‘I’m breaking my own rules’, he’s going against what he’s always been told and therefore something he’s always allowed himself to believe but he is learning to be himself and accept himself because at the End of the day, love is only for the brave. But finally after all this questioning after being told he’s sick, being told he has a devil in him he finally in Out of my System finally sheds off these traumas finally learns to accept who he is ‘Demons, I’m taking all of my demons’ he’s collecting the parts of him that he’s been told are wrong the parts he should hate the ‘devil in his brain’ but he’s ‘putting them where he can’t see them’ because he doesn’t need them anymore he doesn’t want to listen to this trauma because he’s grown from that, he’s getting it Out of his system because he’s finally accepted who he is and he’s being true to himself.

There’s a lot of dark connotations to religious lyricism and the guilt that shines through is prevalent this theme carries through so much of his song writing and it’s truly beautiful like I could truly go on about it (but I won’t I promise). There are countless examples of other motifs and ideas he uses in his lyricism but this is one I’ve never truly seen get truly addressed and it’s in my opinion one of his deepest and most painful themes because of the trauma that comes through the terrifying feeling of trying to be yourself of learning to accept yourself and honestly you don’t even need to look too hard to hear and see the queer connotations that cover such a theme.

as i stood next to my partner watching the midnight fireworks last night, i had a fleeting thought -

16 year old me didn't think i'd still be here at 26 -

i didn't expect to still be on this earth in 2023

when i was around that age my home life was really shitty and abusive and lonely and my only saving grace at the time was the family i found within the one direction/5sos fandom. there were so many times then that my fandom friends saved me, literally.

i wouldn't be here today without them.

i stopped being in fandoms around 2016 and while i still have MANY long term close friends from that time, we all have gone our separate ways interest wise.

I didn't realize just how much i missed being a part of a community until i joined tumblr again. the austin/elvis fandom welcomed me with open arms & filled me with that same youthful joy and connection as i had when i was 16. and even BETTER bc this fandom has blown me away with how kind and gentle and loving it is

point is - i’m grateful that i AM still here, that i’ve been here long enough to meet you and experience this amazing fandom.

it's insane to me to think i would've never met some of the brightest stars of my days without walking into that theater that day. my year would've been so empty, lonely and sad without you all, so thank you all from the bottom of my cold lil heart - you all showed up in my life when i needed u the most

(something weird about this 1D -> Elvis/Aus pipeline is that when i went back to see the day i saw the movie the first time it was on July 23, aka the 1D anniversary 👀 lil weird)

Saw the 5H renaissance on Twitter and just gotta say, like Lauren tweeted, “the timeline’s triggering af”.

I grew up listening to those girls. I grew up supporting them. I remember watching their X Factor performances, their interviews even clips of their mall performances. And even though there were many upsides, there were a lot of downsides too.

I’m not going to touch on the messiness of Camila leaving the band because it’s too much to cover.

This is gonna be long cause I’m still mad at Syco for what they did to 5H.

I am a massive Lauren stan and I love her voice so much. I found it super annoying that she didn’t get enough solos (you guys if you’re 5H fans, know which ones) and I noticed how much Lauren changed over the course of 5H’s run.

I’m gonna start with the downsides first:

From 2012 to 2018, you could see how 5H changed for the better and for the worse. And the worse part was their contract.

According to their lawyer; she said that that contract was one of the worst she’d ever seen. And if you followed 5H throughout their run, you would’ve seen it.

I’m gonna start by mentioning Lauren cause I love that woman.

2012 Lauren had a spark in her and you could slowly see the light dim from her and it got especially bad in 2015-16. In the interviews, she always looked tired and wasn’t just her, the other girls too. It was clear that all of them were overworked and as Lauren said “literal slaves” and “they see nothing”. She’s also called out their label for exploiting the band and telling fans to “read their contracts” which should tell you how bad the situation was.

And it also applied to the other girls. For example; 2013 Camila was more joyful and more goofy then you move to 2016 Camila and she became more quiet.

I know you could say that she matured. And yes I agree; she did. But you could see how exhausted she was half the time. I’ll bring up another point as to why Camila became more quiet later in this post.

This just didn’t apply to 5H, it also applied to 1D and Little Mix. Below is a link of how Syco exploited them and just knowing all that made me so sad for them. These were teenagers, 5H especially (Dinah and Camila were 15, Lauren and Normani were 16) and their management worked them to the bone. Some highlights this person in the video talked about included how Dinah had to watch her great grandmother’s funeral over face time because management wouldn’t let her attend the funeral. And another point is that Lauren said in a very recent interview that from 2013-2018, she only went home for 2 weeks a year.

Now that’s insane. I’m mainly bringing up 5H cause like I said, I grew up with them. I was there when things started to go south. As much as I loved seeing clips of the girls goofing around esp when Dinah poured water over Camila and then Camila slipped on stage, it hurts knowing that they were exploited. I know people say 5H had no chemistry etc. But you have to remember that they auditioned as solo artists and were put together in a band. Plus it didn’t help that Camila was singled out, I feel that started the rift between her and the girls.

Anyways, like I said, I am a massive Lauren fan because she’s outspoken about her beliefs and she’s so underrated. If you see videos of her covering for the girls when they couldn’t perform, you know she has the range and the voice. One example I would quote is when she covered for Dinah in Who Are You. Now, I know that was Dinah’s song but hearing Lauren sing her parts gave me goosebumps. The fact that she had to least amount of lines in the Reflection album still pisses me off till this day.

Another point that I would like to make is that Dinah also pointed out that she had to tweak her vocals to make herself sound more pop because the producers told her that her voice was too soulful and didn’t suit the songs such as Sledgehammer or Boss. That’s crazy cause if you watched Dinah perform live, you know that woman has the range and the vocals. She impressed me so much with her X Factor audition and it was such a waste that she was sidelined because she didn’t suit the pop songs.

And another thing that Camila did point out is as that the girls were oversexualized in their songs. Camila and Dinah were 17 when they filmed and recorded the vocals for Worth It. Camila had to sing and I quote “I like it a little rough” when she was a minor. And didn’t help that for the music video; they dolled up the girls to make them look way older than they actually were. I mean look at Dinah, she looked to be 30 when she was 17.

I know some people are gonna debate that Camila could’ve easily turned down that line or spoken up. But you have to remember that their management controlled them. Like Lauren said, if you tried to go against management, they would brand you as a difficult and probably blacklist you. So, the girls couldn’t exactly say no while they were under contract.

Another downside that I would like to point out is that 5H had no creative control over their music. I mean YouTube has some of their unreleased songs such as Voicemail which is a bop and should’ve been on 7/27 and the fans love it. That’s why Camila left the band.

Again, some people might say “if 5H was gonna break up anyways, why didn’t she just pull through?”

And I raise you this, did you see how burnt out Camila was? That poor woman suffered an anxiety attack so bad that she couldn’t perform for half the show. The other girls also couldn’t deal with the exhaustion. Lauren broke down during No Way and Dinah started crying during Brave Honest Beautiful. It was just a huge mess and you expect Camila to suffer another year? Even Ally said in her book that she didn’t enjoy her time in 5H and it was because of the overworking, the fact that people were saying she wasn’t as good as the other girls. Yes, I’ve seen the tweets and the comments which are just awful.

You can’t compare Ally’s vocals to Camila’s or Normani’s, they all have different ranges and voices. You can’t compare Camila’s dancing to Normani’s, they have different backgrounds in dancing and Camila was a little bit less coordinated. You literally cannot compare the girls to each other because they were so different.

And now another point that I would say is a downside would be the shipping. And yes, the ship I’m talking about is Camren. Ngl, I used to ship them only because of the fanfics (you guys know which ones). But as I got older, I realized what Lauren said about the fans being super invasive and you could see how it affected her friendship with Camila. Lauren said it herself on Becky G’s podcast that she felt like a predator and she would hyper analyze her actions. And you could see it, you could see how she distanced herself from Camila because of the shippers (I still IHQ is about Lauren and somewhat about Dinah).

So yeah, when I saw the 5H renaissance trending, that brought me all those memories. But now, time for the upsides.

I said earlier that people say 5H didn’t have chemistry but have you seen their earlier interviews or their twitcams? They were goofing around with each other and just being teenagers because that’s what they were. I know people say 5H weren’t coordinated during rehearsals etc but you have to remember that their rehearsals were rushed. Lauren also mentioned that in her very recent interview so you can’t blame the girls for messing up (Well except Normani cause that woman is the goddess of dancing). Ally still doing a cartwheel while Camila and Dinah do the hammer dance still cracks me up but that was 5H. They were teenagers having fun on stage and it worked. The audience loved it.

So yes, while I did enjoy watching 5H (attended their Reflection tour , 7/27 tour and their self titled album tour) and watched their tour bus videos and interviews, just noticing the changes throughout the years, hurt and it was hard as a fan to see the spark dim from their eyes.

But ever since the group went on hiatus, you can slowly see them healing from the trauma. And I can’t blame Lauren for not wanting to rejoin the band for a comeback. I know she’s grateful for her time in the band and yeah, it helped her grow as an artist and helped her find her path in the industry. The same goes for the other girls too.

I just wish that these artists have a union like SAG-AFTRA to back them up because they are so exploited. This needs to be highlighted more, now that Syco is out of the picture.
