BnHA Chapter 425: New Normal

Previously on BnHA: Everyone was all “and with that we conclude our final battle for better or worse!! We will now commence our slow return to the new normal, beginning with our protagonist and deuteragonist who are miraculously more or less intact, albeit exhausted and mildly traumatized. Also the words ‘more or less’ are kind of doing a lot of heavy lifting there.”

Today on BnHA: The Big 3 and Aoyama are OUT. Shinsou is IN. The Tododrama is PENDING, and the mysterious figure in the shadows is UNIDENTIFIED. Also class 1-A finally becomes class 2-A and it only took them 425 chapters and TEN LONG YEARS. Can you imagine if this series had actually run throughout their high school experience like people once expected. “THE YEAR IS 2044 AND MY HERO ACADEMIA IS FINALLY WINDING TO A CLOSE.” There’s an alternate universe somewhere where this actually happened and we were all so very, very tired.

This is once again a shorter than usual reaction summary post, as opposed to my typical page-by-page liveblog. Not gonna have time to do those for a while yet most likely, but like hell am I gonna miss out on the last days of the series, so here we are.

watching the eighteen inch tall Rat Principal standing at a podium overseeing this graduation ceremony is surreal in the most wonderful way. it’s like receiving your diploma from a sentient Funko Pop

I love how they established that Mic sitting there screaming at the top of his lungs is also a beloved U.A. graduation tradition, and that the senpais just roll with it while everyone else is in varying stages of trying to decide if it’s too late to transfer to another school

absolutely wild that Horikoshi gives credit to Rat Principal for coordinating the entire disaster recovery nationwide. are you serious. the “world-famous” Principal Nezu?? you’re telling me this little capybara is effectively the secret president of Japan now or something. when does he even sleep

“the principal made great contributions to quirk morality education” is also a VERY interesting tidbit that I really want to know more about. “hey guys what if we did a better job at teaching people not to be dicks with their quirks” AND JUST LIKE THAT JAPAN WAS SAVED huzzah

“we lost many things, but we gained nothing” is both HILARIOUS and soundly depressing, but I can see what he’s trying to get at. still an odd choice for a graduation speech though. “our job is all about harm reduction, and we couldn’t even do that this time around, but in the future we hope to balance things out and maybe even get some net positive impact going!” lmao. again it’s all true, and in all honesty it’s spectacular that they managed as well as they did, all things considered. and I guess it would have been disingenuous to just ignore the reality of everything this particular school body has been through and pretend like everything is great right now. but I still can’t help feeling like there was probably a more inspiring way to get this message across lol

regardless of what he says, Aizawa 100% either bribed or threatened Rat Principal behind the scenes in order to stay with his class. and will do so again next year. he can and will keep getting away with it. he is never leaving these kids

and the sheer relief from all of them upon hearing it is all the justification he needs. these kids have four thousand nine hundred and seventeen accumulated traumas among them. they don’t need a four thousand nine hundred and eighteenth. this man is their father ffs. MINA WAS CRYING AND EVERYTHING

Kacchan watched that YouTube video about a dozen times until he managed to tie his tie all on his own with the one hand. and he did an amazing job. he’s such a model citizen now

also it looks to me like he has his right arm hidden in a sling underneath his shirt, which is interesting. if I’m not mistaken (and I very well could be, since it’s been a hot minute since I did any BnHA timeline math), the final battle took place sometime in early May, so this chapter is taking place roughly one month later. the hospital chapter took place about a week after the battle, so it’s been about 3-4 weeks since then. I really want to know what kind of shape Kacchan’s arm is in, but I guess Horikoshi will get to it when he gets to it

also, “we all gotta be together today” was a real wakeup call to me in that it gave me just an absolutely ridiculous amount of feels. just a totally unreasonable amount. and it’s like. listen, self. Kacchan has completed his character growth arc. he’s a team player and a leader who loves all his friends and they all love him in return. we’ve known this for years now. it’s an established fact. you can’t keep bursting into tears or whatever every time he shows it. this is no way to live your life. I need an intervention

anyways later this evening class 2-A is gonna have a celebratory movie night in the common room, and Kacchan is gonna fall asleep two minutes in peacefully surrounded by all his classmates, and they’re all gonna nudge each other and smile fondly and cover him with a blanket and stay up until 2am and Aizawa will have no mercy on them the following morning. it’s gonna be so wholesome you guys

(ETA: I decided to go back and have some more feels about this one tiny Kacchan panel, because apparently the four paragraphs I already wrote about it weren't enough. so the thing is, Sero's wonderment at Katsuki being out of the hospital initially read to me as half bemused awe, and half "oh boy, time to get back into our usual rhythm of antagonizing Kacchan!" but my second time around, I can't help remembering that all of Kacchan's classmates got to watch this kid getting tortured and strangled and stabbed through the heart in 4K. like, even if they were busy with their own fights at the time, there's no way they didn't see the footage later on afterwards.

and that had to have been traumatic for them. their friend literally died and was just lying there so still for so long afterwards. and him getting better and going back to his usual asskicking self later on doesn't just erase those memories, you know? especially with him having lasting, permanent damage afterward. not just his arm, even! like who even knows if his heart is going to be okay long term. when people get organ transplants they have to go on immunosuppressants afterwards because otherwise their body will try to attack the replacement organ. so I wonder how exactly it works when it's still your heart, but it's being held together by various bits and pieces of a spindly little floss man. idk, but I bet you it's still pretty rough.

anyway so long story short, I'm now reading this as one-third bemused awe, one-third joking antagonism, and one-third genuine "no seriously, is it okay for you to be here, please don't do anything to put your health at risk because we seriously cannot handle you dying on us again." and Kacchan's not even disagreeing with him lol, which has to be the most concerning thing of all. "they said it's okay if I rest." even he knows he's pushing it, but it was too important of an occasion to miss. anyway please take it easy kiddo.)

Aoyama leaving makes me sad but it makes total sense for his character after what he’s been through. he needs time to sort things out and continue down his own personal honor-regaining journey. respect

also glad to hear that it was his own choice and that both Rat Principal and Nao would have supported him if he stayed. I still to this day do not understand Naomasa’s actual level of authority lol. like, he’s supposedly a detective, and yet he seems to be personally in charge of every single important police operation, on like a national level. and he has the authority to make decisions like letting Aoyama go free. he is the law, literally

Aoyama trying to feed Deku some farewell cheese also took me out. like he just walked in there and was all “sorry everyone, I’m leaving, but I’ll still aim for the path of a hero and will one day return, don’t you worry!” and at some point in the midst of this tearful speech he made a beeline directly to Izuku and tried to give him some cheese that he apparently just had in his pocket or something. and Izuku was all “YEAH!” all solemnly but HE DIDN’T EVEN TOUCH THAT POCKET CHEESE. like he loves you and accepts you for who you are Yuuga but COME ON

at this point in the chapter it also became clear to me that Aizawa has his hair up in some sort of loosely assembled messy bun and that’s why it looks so especially flowing and gorgeous today. this is great cinema

and then AT LONG LAST, the admission of Shinsou into class 2-A. they tried everything they could to keep him out, BUT NOT EVEN THE END OF THE WORLD COULD STOP HIM. his rightful place

Ojiro’s scandalized response to hearing Fuwa refer to Aizawa as “Era-sen”, and then Fuwa subsequently revealing all of Aizawa’s secrets and Aizawa getting flustered and kicking her out, was one of the most delightful sequences I’ve read. “nooooo don’t tell them that, what the hell am I gonna threaten them with now”

Izuku has not even attempted to crack a smile since the final battle, aside from when he was frantically trying to reassure Kacchan in the hospital. I’m worried about him but also loving this a little bit, ngl. I am content to wait for you to eventually have a proper breakdown, mister Greatest Hero

also I singled him out on the whole not-smiling thing, but really this is true for just about all of them. my heart aches :(

were there really so many people freaking out over Izuku’s hair that Horikoshi felt compelled to throw in that “HEY DEKU-KUN, YOU SHAVED YOUR HAIR LIKE THAT DUE TO AN INJURY, RIGHT? BUT IT’LL GROW BACK, RIGHT!?” line in there lol. the hilarious thing is that this chapter was already in the books before 424 was released, so it means that Horikoshi anticipated the backlash ahead of time. the man knows his audience

and now for this mysterious little barefoot man randomly emerging from some rubble somewhere. who are you. fandom already thinks you’re everyone from Tenko to Hisashi lol. my personal theory is that he’s just a random citizen who’s hurt and traumatized and needs help. and unlike what happened with baby Tenko once upon a time, this young man actually will be helped by a hero in his moment of need, and it’ll be all hopeful and stuff because SOCIETY IS CHANGING FOR THE BETTER NOW HOORAY

your big break in the hollywood came with your lead role in a massively successful disney film. you were this year's breakout star, and therefore were invited to every charity and red carpeted event.

the rest was history after that interview. before moving onto the next interviewer, you asked trevor to see his list of interview questions. when he passed the sheet over to you, you wrote your number down for him to call. he called you the very next day.

“hold my hand again?” trevor asked, holding his hand back out to you. you easily take his hand and bring it up to your lips. 

“okay, we can go out now,” the security guard from before motions for the other guards to be alert as you begin to go outside to your car.

everyone was shouting your name, you and trevor were being blinded by the flashes of cameras, and you swore you had never seen a larger crowd in all of your life. with you being gone in the usa for the past two years, yours and your families fandom in mexico were going crazy over your return. 

“there's so many people!” trevors shocked voice was loud in your ear as he leaned down so you would hear him. before you could respond, the crowd started to shift as they pushed against the barrier that was separating them from you. all of the security guards were quick to step into action as they pushed against the crowds and blocked them with their bodies. 

you gripped trevor's hand tighter as you quickened your pace to the car that you were less than a foot away from.

One Way to Start the Morning: Yukiko and Yosuke talk about being in love with their best friends... as much as Yosuke can admit it anyway. realistically awkward but genuine Yosuke and Yukiko friendship, hooray! [warnings for one use of slur]

Whisperwind: Yosuke gains telepathic powers and it's too much (a sorta Carrie au). very surreal but well done horror fic (there is souyo but as you can imagine, it doesn't end well) [no smut but it is very gory so think maybe R? instead of NC-17; major character death]

Contact: souyo's relationship through touch. wonderful sense of tension and space throughout this fic, and i love viewing their progression thru one specific lens

Breaking Up is Hard To Do: Yosuke confesses... the night before Souji leaves. once again the genre is souyo/working on their issues. excellent, naturalistic dialog and not too angsty...

[untitled]: souyo told purely from other character's perspectives. unfortunately unfinished; we really need more outside pov fics !

Unfortunate Timing: souyo are having phone sex when Nanako has the WORST timing. Souji's dilemma is supremely entertaining, and we love bratty!Yosuke [warnings for Nanako? she's not a part of/aware of the sex per se but she's in the vicinity if that squicks you out]

Experience: Kanji learns a thing or two from established souyo. the Kanji pov is an interesting angle to view souyo and how well they work together [warnings for dp]

I HAVE NO DUNGEON, AND I MUST TROLL!: Yosuke has a personal blog- very personal- that starts getting hate from one anonymous Souji. this fic is unique for presenting the lj/comments true to life and there's a lovely floaty style to the offline sections; this fic is also an interesting look into Jerkji, who we don't see often in fan characterization anymore [warnings for manipulative!Souji; eating disorders (adjacent); dubcon; suicidal actions]

and finally Sympathy Crime even though pretty much everyone already knows about it AKA the fic where Adachi manipulates Yosuke into a relationship and it takes a tole on the investigation. heed the warnings of abuse, rape, torture, and suicidal thoughts/attempts seriously as the fic goes in depth to depict these, the horrifying effects, and then recovery. It does not pull any punches. The fic really understands how anyone can be susceptible to abuse and how important a support system/lack thereof is. It is incredibly well written- and that is in part because it has a message about horrendous acts of abuse. Additionally, it's a 200k+ (i think) word read so it is A Lot. Sympathy Crime is 100% not for everyone, but if you think you can tolerate reading the subject matter, there is a reason why this is a monolithic fic in P4 fandom history

Just gotta say.....HFC was pretty great! It was funny and moving and crazy and I ABSOLUTELY ADORE IT!! 10000/10 imo, would recommend!

-Tom Fisher as Graham Chapman was pretty much the MVP of this film, I love his surreal yet pretty funny wiseness that he gives the other Pythons and every scene he was in, even for a few minutes of screen time, was pretty much GOATED ASF!! Would've loved to have seen more scenes of Fisher's Graham Chapman, but for every moment he was in, he absolutely chewed, nay, MUNCHED on that scenery with absolutely deLIGHT!!

-Phil Nichol as Terry Gilliam was pretty hilarious actually ngl! Nichol's portrayal really nailed down Gilliam's crazy and chaotic little goblin-like vibes, and I absolutely love Nichol's voice he did for Gilliam, it's very adorable imo 🥰

-I like the scene in the movie where the Pythons are at the pub, and John, Michael, Terry, Jonesy & Eric are drinking alcohol/beer 🍻, whereas Gray's the only one drinking orange juice 🍊. Idk, it's a nice little detail I noticed and I appreciate it being included in the film as it refers to Gray's alcohol intervention and that's he's really over the alcohol for the better and for the good of his health. It's a nice and lovely moment ❤️

Hi!! What are your thoughts on a hypothetical Graham Chapman biopic, starring Tom Fisher (as Graham)?

Ooooh this is a cool ASF question frfr!! Thank you for the ask @knoxoverstreet16 !!

Obviously, Tom Fisher as Graham was absolutely great in “Holy Flying Circus” (2011), everything from his jackets to his gay quotes to his wiseness and gayness in general was just….ABSOLUTELY PERFECTO *mwah* and in short his portrayal was and is absolutely amazing!!

Now, a biopic starring Tom as Graham? That’d be unironically a MASTERPIECE FOR. REAL.

Personally, I think Tom Fisher would honestly be an awesome pick as Graham, especially for a hypothetical biopic! Especially the fact that Tom can bring that vulnerability to some of his characters really really well fr, and I think he’d bring the emotional pathos of Graham exceptionally for sure!! I’d fr recommend you go watch this lil indie film starring Tom (in the main role ofc) called “Treacle Jr” (2010), as he’s absolutely great in that fr, as well as the fact that his character in that film really brings that vulnerability and emotional pathos, and ngl Tom’s character in TJ does remind me of Brian Cohen from “Life of Brian” (1979) in a way too (idk why but Tom’s character in TJ deffo has “Brian Cohen” vibes frfr) ! The whole film’s on YouTube so do check it out!

Ok, so in terms of how the hypothetical biopic starring Tom Fisher as Gray would be like? Mmmmm…..if we are to assume that it’d be a (mostly) live action film with some animation bits in there (aka a live action/animated hybrid film), then it’d be fr interesting! I’m thinking it could be like the Elton John biopic “Rocketman” (2019) in a way, where in that it is a fantastical reimagining of Elton John’s life (with some musical numbers ofc), and I can see the hypothetical Tom Fisher/Gray biopic going along that route!

Idk why, maybe it’s because I really love the animated biopic “A Liar’s Autobiography” (2012) (aka the animated biopic about Graham), but I think a surreal animated film (or in the case of the hypothetical Tom Fisher/Gray biopic, a live action/animated hybrid film) deffo fits with Graham’s vibes a lot more than if it was a traditional and conventional biopic (in which Graham was neither traditional nor conventional lol) as Graham was truly bonkers and wacky which was disguised under the fact that he mostly played the “straight” (badum tush) roles, aka he played the somewhat more “normal” character roles compared to the other Pythons most of the time, with some exceptions here and there ofc. Oh and also, despite playing the “straight” leading man, Graham was, ironically, NOT straight (he was a gay-leaning bisexual ofc). I think it would be further interesting if the biopic had a live action Tom Fisher/Gray intersect with the animated people of the scene(s) or smth like that? Like the bridge between reality and (animated) fantasy becomes more and more thinner and blurred by the minute, ya’know?

Anyway uhh tangent over, what was I talking about? Oh yes yes ofc, the hypothetical Tom Fisher/Gray biopic!!

Another thing that I think would be interesting in the hypothetical biopic would be Tom Fisher/Gray breaking the 4th Wall and talking directly to the audience (maybe in a sorta “Fleabag”-style 4th Wall breaking kinda way?) and there’s some characters in the film who are like “Gray….who the hell are you talking to?” and Tom Fisher/Gray is like “oh uhh…I’m talking to the ceiling” or smth like that, with Tom Fisher/Gray acknowledging that “it’s hard to talk with you when other people start noticing that I’m talking with you, ya’know?” or smth like that!

Some more things that would be interesting in the hypothetical biopic :

-It would be cool seeing Tom Fisher/Gray in Graham’s outfits from the different decades (like the 1960s, early-mid 70s, early-mid-late 80s, etc!)

-If David Sherlock (Graham’s partner and technically husband really) were in the biopic, then I’d think Peter Sandys-Clarke would great as David fr! Because yes. (Also they both look so so similar fr ngl)

-Tom Fisher/Gray singing “Medical Love Song” would unironically be awesome actually, fr.

-Also, ofc it obviously has to be unambiguously, UNAPOLOGETICALLY gay/queer AS FUCK. It’s what Gray would’ve wanted ofc <33

-ALSO also, it has to be in bad taste (by that I mean “good bad taste” not “Jesus Christ this is so horrifically homophobic and unnecessarily cruel and mean to Graham wtaf were they doing??!!???! bad taste”, as in “bad taste” like what Graham would’ve wanted it to be <33 as he is ofc “The Prince of Bad Taste” 😉)

a little update

hi! uhm.. i don't even know how or where to start this after basically just disappearing without a word so i'll just start with: hey, i'm still here! i didn't want to leave, it just happened..

so much was and still is going in my life that i just didn't have the time to be active on here. unfortunately, that hasn't really changed and i feel incredibly sorry about that. this blog was my safe space for a long time, but life just got too overwhelming at some point and i couldn't enjoy anything anymore. either way, i couldn't be more grateful for everyone who is still reading my fics on a daily basis and leaving all the love on my blog in general - i love you all 🫶🏻

this post is supposed to update you on what will happen with this blog in the future and what has been going on in my life. the latter will be at the end so i don't force you to read it!

most importantly: this blog is very dear to my heart and i want to start writing again soon. i really missed the daily routine of writing a few words and i want to get back into it but i genuinely can't promise anything. there are still a few requests in my inbox but i don't even know if these people still want me to write their requests since it's been ages and they probably don't even remember. i don't really know what to do about that :( i also have a lot of unfinished drafts with my own ideas and it just got really overwhelming ngl

another reason i didn't enjoy writing as much anymore is also the liking/reblogging/commenting system of tumblr. as a writer, it simply sucks to 'only' get likes when we all know that reblogs are what pushes fics. as a reader, i usually don't reblog every single thing i read either or i just forget so i'm torn between those two sides and genuinely don't know what to do. i don't write and have never written to get the most likes/reblogs, i write because i want people to feel safe, to escape reality for at least a few minutes and because i enjoy it. but in the end, appreciation for what i write is also important in some way..

either way, i'll try to figure this out soonish and hopefully post a new fic in the foreseeable future 🥺 i missed it so so much

so, what has been going on in my life since i stopped writing? well, i'm almost done with my studies (which is fun but also scary) and i literally have only been breathing and living for university. it was a lot. it still is a lot to be honest but at least i can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel! yayy

when i did have time to myself and allowed myself a break, i grabbed a book or watched a movie/show. i finally got to read some of the books i wanted to read for ages (a court of thorns and roses, king of scars, etc) and i reached my goal of reading 50 books last year and currently i'm at 18 books for 2024!

i also watched a few new shows and movies like dune 2, damsel, challengers or the hunger games and the one piece and atla live action, derry girls, and - what probably took in my whole life at this point - house of the dragon and game of thrones!!! i can't believe i finally watched game of thrones after all these years, it still feels surreal. and listen, i'm OBSESSED. i watched it with my best friend who has seen it 10+ times and we started with house of the dragon (can't wait for season two!!!) and then went on with game of thrones and OH MY GOD. it's just so so good, i love it so much and can't believe i missed out on it for all these years. i know it's unbelievable but i went into it with basically 0 knowledge and only minor spoilers i have seen over the years so the impact was incredible. the whole experience was absolutely amazing and i will definitely rewatch it! my favourite characters are jon (what a surprise), sansa and tyrion <3 oh, and i love alicent and criston in hotd, i'm 100% team green~ who would have thought that now i of course want to write something for jon snow and maybe even some other characters from got/hotd, we'll see!

also, i can't believe the european championship is starting on friday and what do you mean it's happening in my country??? i'm so excited, can't wait to watch all the matches!!

i think this is enough for the little update. i genuinely hope that i will be able to write & post something soon and that i can finally turn this blog into my safe space again 🫶🏻 ily

I first saw him in Shanghai Noon (Roy my beloved) and its sequels and then the next movie was The Royal Tenenbaums (Eli my beloved) and by the time I knew how to separate the roles from the artist, he was in NATM 😂which means dooming myself to think "oh so he's just a cowboy irl" for the longest time. It took me becoming a pretentious film student and diving headfirst into Wes Anderson filmography to deprogram myself lmao. And now that I'm a through and through Owen appreciator, he really is just spotted in the wilds wearing cowboy hats and handkerchiefs around neck! 😂😂

They are luckily normal about fictional characters so weren't judging me over all the Nefarious Deeds, and just as I'd hoped, they got a kick out of extendo-arm and ear scythe. as far as my favorites of the dwarves go, I absolutely adore kíli, fíli, bofur and nori!! they're all amazing and I love the deeper look the production vlogs give you for them <3 I'm also a big fan of Frodo in particular, he's so surreal as a tortured character and I love his character arc throughout the movies.

if I could go anywhere in all of middle-earth, I'd definitely have to say Erebor and Rivendell. they're just absolutely stunning locations and I would do anything for the chance to witness such splendor! the shire is also a personal favorite of mine :)

as far as ships with the Erebor gang, I love Thorin and Bilbo. despite Martin Freeman not liking fans seeing queerness with his characters, he ironically plays queerness very well. though I'm not really crazy about crossover ships if I'm being honest, but definitely more power to those that adore them.
