Scenes do not exist unless they facilitate a change or tone shift, a "value change". Something that occurs in the scene must motivate a character to do something they would not have otherwise in future scenes. Good to bad or bad to good etc but never no change in emotion. This applies to every scene, regardless of length. It provides a piece of information that changes the emotion and causes and affects the direction of action.

But we have a scene in 3x01 of Mike and El talking on the radio as he bikes away from her house. He says Hopper looked funny. She laughs. She says he wishes he was still there. He agrees and says he'll be back tomorrow...but his delivery changes and his face falls. That's the entire scene.

Then, as I covered in this post, he arrives at the movies irritable.

Only two things are stated in that scene: Hopper made a funny face, El wishes she and Mike were still together (implied: kissing).

The scene is started with the Hopper comment by Mike himself, so that certainly isn't the gained information over the course of the scene. So gee golly, what could have altered him?

Yeah. So what we know of scenes are writing is that Mike starts this scene happy. A single thing is said: "I wish I was still with you". Mike is required by screenwriting structure to leave the scene differently then how he came into, which is, as we just established, happy.

The only reason for this scene to exist is for the idea of being with El again how they just were to upset Mike.

A lot of times, the folks running admin for these groups have names like 'Big Standing Bear Jones'. My personal favorite was 'Buffalo Sister'. It's connected to 'naming ceremonies' they give themselves, which is also a common thing the BIA has noticed with all of these groups. Whatever you do don't go on Tiktok it's terrible there

It's so funny cuz the 'cherokee names' in the fake tribes are always in English... or at least mostly. I've even heard someone say 'I was named [such and such in english] and we just don't know what it would be in cherokee yet' like. A cherokee name..... get this... a cherokee name is by definition... in cherokee.

Because this feels rude to put in the tags on someone else's really interesting post bc it's basically a counterpoint: I am so intrigued not just by the statistical breakdowns you can do with a show like spn, but also by the fact that there are episodes that are overall 90% mediocre to bad and then that remaining 10% lives rent free in the fandom hivemind divorced from that episode. Or the reverse where the majority of an episode is really good but the last 5-10min banish it to the shadow realm. (come see my semi-controversial takes in the tags!)

And idk how you calculate for any of that but I think it's really interesting stuff to dig into and that sort of qualitative data / anecdata is so hard to include and yet so cool to pick apart. Especially going back and looking at how fandom opinions have changed over the years like looking at contemporary opinions on earlier seasons are so fascinating, especially when there's been an inversion of fandom opinion in the intervening years where clunkers become belovèd and belovèds become beloathed.

There's something kinda funny about how RWBY just absolutely refuses to die despite a constant stream of adversity. The first season was objectively hot garbage but it still got a second season. The creator of the series whose passion project the whole thing was passed away in a freak accident after the second season but they just kept going without him and somehow a significant portion of the fanbase went along for it. The budget got slashed in Season 5 because of gross mismanagement but no worries! The fans stuck with it and they got it back for Season 6. Then a few seasons later the entire company that's been producing it went completely tits up and we all assumed THAT would be the end but nope!!! They got bought by Viz. RWBY has now outlived both the man who dreamt it up and the company that produced it. In an era where numerous streaming shows get axed after one or two seasons despite being critical successes with large fanbases it is completely baffling that a show that is so consistently troubled and infamously has an extremely mixed reception cannot be fucking ended despite all indications to the contrary. It truly is femslash Supernatural

I am LOVING the fucking chocolate guy’s netflix show! It’s FANTASTIC! Anf hold on to your fucking boots y’all cause it’s actually not what I was expecting at all!

Do you miss the gentleness of the Great British Bake-Off? THIS SHOW IS SO KIND AND GENTLE! For fuck’s sake, NO ONE GETS KICKED OFF! No. No, Listen to this! When they lose the first challenge (a pastry one), the punishment is... They get private lessons with Amaury to help improve what brought their scores down instead of competing in the second chocolate challenge. 

When the one black lady contestant messed up the first challenge I was super bummed and like, OF COURSE. But NO. She got lessons! She struggled! she worked hard! and she won a later challenge! GROWTH MY DUDES! They are there TO LEARN and GROW and Maybe Win a Big Prize!

They ALL get to stay and keep doing their best! and at the end the one who did the best overall is the one who gets the money prize!

Look at this lovely line up! they make COOL LOOKING FANCY THINGS! Amaury tells us how he does some of the fancy things he does! They OFFER TO HELP EACH OTHER WHEN THEY FINISH EARLY AND GET PROPS FOR THAT! (not taunted for not using their own time better). The set up even kinda makes the one who is like, I’m in it to win it, is the villain and doing bad. The rest who are like, I’m here to learn and grow and maybe make friends! AUGH YOU GUYS!

Amaury is soft spoken and kind, and has a pretty voice and a pretty smile and that’s nice to watch too. The chefs are talented and artistic and they actually give the THE TIME to make nice things! It’s not “Wham out some half-assed garbage in 2 hours so we can shotgun the production and laugh at your garbage” like most cooking shows nowadays. NO! 14 hour challenges! They��re still hard, but they get to actually make cool stuff! fancy stuff! Stuff I want to look at and cheer for them!

The episodes average 38 min and aren’t a huge time commitment, the first episode being the longest one, and there are only 8 total so it’s not like you have to really get in for the long haul. \

WATCH IT! Pump it! we need more cooking shows like this and less that are sad and mean!
