Finished arcane! It was pretty good. It feels like they needed another episode to flesh things out/pace things better and it definitly has its issues but overall i enjoyed it a lot (wish they showed my main favorite crow guy proper though 😔).

In regards to fleshing things out i actually didnt mind some of the little skips in time between episodes, i actually enjoy when shows do that sometimes and they trust the audience to fill in some gaps without force feeding exposition about every little thing. But other things i wouldve liked more on, like victors mindset shift feels like they couldve spent some time on it. But i think some of that might be carryover from season 1 which i didnt rewatch so maybe that couldve helped. Also wanted more a lot more out of the epilogue. Other stuff too but those are some of the bigger grievances i guess

But regardless, the show really just had so much passion and creative vision behind it- its such a GOOD LOOKING show, like every animated thing wishes they had the time/care/creative freedom put into it that arcane was seemingly allowed to have. The expression work and body language and artstyle shifts contributed so much visual storytelling wise that helped sell the pathos and relationships between characters even when the writing could sometimes fall a little short. Not to say the writing was bad, there were some nice bits of writing i liked a lot (silcos final talk with jinx was one of them), its just that the visuals really were adding a lot of heavy lifting for me.

Some of the song choices weren't my favorite but it does add to the identity of the show. It really does have a nice visual identity that has a little similarity to the spiderverse inspired stuff but definitly feels distinctly like its own thing. The character designs, shot compositions, backgrounds, action scenes were all just chefs kiss really- again visual feast.

And there were just a lot of nice little nods to the game for the fans without feeling, uh, pretentious? Although i know the "lore changes" aggravate some people but i just treat it as separate canon. I do get the frustration with this "separate cannon" leaking into the game (thus kinda superceding the cannon) like with viktor's VGU though. I will miss og machine herald but itll probably become a legacy skin or something. And also i really like arcane viktor and think hes cute and love his voice so personally it doesnt bother me much. Riot will do lore retcons even without a cool show behind it anyway smh (skarner...)

Idk even if it kinda floundered in some of the execution of its ideas it had some nice, sincere things to say about our connections with others and moving forward and forgiveness that i always like, and i hope they add Mel to league sometime after Ambessa because Mel is cool.

(disclaimer, I am irritated. This is a point I've had to explain to a lot of people who arent designers, and it gets really irritating: you do not have to like a design for it to be an objectively good design. My comments are on what makes an objectively good design, not what I personally like in a design. There are a lot of objectively good designs that I dont like, and plenty of bad designs that I do like)

I AM LITERALLY IN SCHOOL FOR CHARACTER DESIGN!!! I AM SPEAKING FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF SOMEONE WHO REGUALLY HAS TO MAKE DESIGNS THAT PASS THE VIBE CHECK FROM 3 50+ YEAR OLD WHITE MEN WITH VARYING IDEOLIGIES AND MY 1 COOL 30 YEAR OLD LESBIAN PROFFESOR. So, ya, I know damn well I dont know or understand every possible aspect of design and I'll always have more to learn, but I do know what I'm talking about to a degree.

I'm not rationalizing likability of design. The categories I listed are some things I randomly decided, its literally the metric every single assignment I've done has been graded on. Color usage, silhouette, and story telling are basically to design what grammar, spelling, and structure are to writing. And ya- theres still a degree of subjectivity to it, but these are still they're still based in actual design theory and they're the most objective measures artists have to critique design.

Personal comfort is not an objective metric because whats considered comfortable is different for literally every person on the face of the planet. For example, you mentioned finding Vita's design comfortable looking, but it sure as hell wouldnt be comfortable to me (I just hate wearing skirts that go bellow like... my mid thigh? No idea why, I just do). I love wearing skinny jeans, while they make some of my friends wamt to crawl out of their skin. Some people like crop tops, others would rather die than show their stomachs. Some people can do back flips in 10 inch heals where as others cant walk 2 steps in them... you get the gist. If I included comfort as a metric, HoV would be F tier just because I hate tight shirts and lots of tight things around my neck (and like, only an absolute clown would put HoV's design in F tier)

Fetishization is a more complicated category when it comes to objectively judging design and I don't have the time to have that discussion now. My general opinion is "leave minors alone, otherwise horny design is fine so long as your equal oportunity with it," but thats just a me thing #feed the bisexuals 2023 #men deserve tits out ass out outfits too. I very much had to learn that I didnt know what good design is. (There are so many bad design habbits I had no unlearn ✊️😔. ) Things like comfortability, practicality, and wearability are perfectly fair and rational metrics for judging how much you like a design, but it is completely unfair to call a design bad just because it doesn't cater to your values. Or at the very least if you're just bitching about a design you dont like, try and make it clear thats what you're doing (thats what I do with Hare's design :/)

Am I crazy or are Aponia's sleeves not connected to the rest of her outfit? There is a lot I don't like about her design (which is a shame since I really like her), but this one thing is driving me up the wall.

They're disconnected, you're good 👍 . You are free to like or dislike whatever you want, but here's my perspective on this (not gonna judge if you still disagree after my explanation)

Whether or not a character design functions like regular clothing isn't something that really matters to me? I'm more interested in the amount of info the design gives on the character and how well its communicated. I'm usually pretty neutral on design until after I've stared at them for awhile, and because I've done some pretty detailed drawings of Aponia (and most of the flame chasers) I've spent a lot of time staring at her and oh boy- her design is a treasure trove of tiny details (from the various pieces of her hand made jewelry and lace accessories hinting at her appreciation of luxuries, to the plants creeping up her design and breaking the symmetry eluding to the nature/fate breaking her illusion of control)

Tldr: I think Aponia has one of the best designs in honkai and if this is the hill I die on, so be it

There was a ballet performance today. And rin couldn’t care less about it. His parents pestered him to come because they are, of course invited. By the owner and organizer of the theatre.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! I’m inaz, your emcee for the night. Today we are all gathered here to witness one of the biggest show ever created since decades ago! I won’t be making this long, can i have a round of applause before starting?” The said emcee gave a polite bow and smile before disappearing in the dark. Along with the claps of the audience.

Whispers were shared among the noble families. Afterall— this event is secured for the rich ones. Fending off money here and there, you cannot attend unless you have connections nor the money.

You’re shaking, anxiously. Your hands are sweating, you do not know what to do. You kept on pacing back and front, left and right. Until that is you felt a hand on your shoulder. You jumped at the sudden contact. “Goodness! You scared me.” You gave a shock look at your best friend— anri.

“Chill girl, you’ve got this. I’ll be watching okay? Just don’t mess this up. Especially with the royal family watching the performance.” Anri spoke with a warning but reassuring tone. Which helped you a bit.

Right. You’re one of the ballet performers. Picked out by the organizer of the event themselves. You are of course, a princess from C/N (country name). Meaning you’re not from here. You have foreign features. Which doesnt give away the etherealistic beauty that you have.

You are gorgeous. You are wearing a white corsen and a sparkling white tutu. A white ballerina dress. Representing a white swan. (IDK WHAT THE BALLERINA OUTFIT IS CALLED SORRY 😔)

Suddenly, you guys were called. Pulling you out of your trance, meaning it’s start of the show. Anri gave you a pat on the shoulder and a hug. “Fighting.” She smiled holding her fist up and so did you bump it with yours. You gave her a nervous smile before stepping off to the stage.

The whispers shared among the audience was quickly shut down when the lights went black. Which means the event is about to start.

You were the first one to step out. With a white headwear glistening among the crowds that shines so perfectly, with a simple make-up on that makes you stand out so much more. You frantically left the backstage to meet up with your childhood friend whom you missed so dearly. Afraid that you wouldn’t be able to catch up to her. Dragging yourself outside you spotted her at the end of the corridor. Unaware of what’s about to happen.
