Eldritch/not-entirely-human Grunkle Stan stories have been eating away at my brain, so I have a silly little concept of Mimic!Stan.

He and his Mystery Shack are both mimics that lure tourists in as a literal "tourist trap" to gather and devour them! Since the house is alive, it raises a few (read: several) child safety concerns that lead to a LOT of rules to be created for Dipper and Mabel to follow when they eventually arrive, such as:

Be careful not to get lost in the winding hallways! The Mystery Shack is bigger on the inside, and you don't want to end up in the wrong areas.

Don't go through randomly appearing doors, they may eat you.

If you think you feel the walls around you breathing and the floor beneath you shifting, no, you don't.

If you think the walls feel a bit damp, you're imagining it.

Watch your fingers around windowsills! You wouldn't want to lose any of them.

Don't linger too long under the doorframes; it may start feeling like they are slowly constricting around you.

Especially when you juxtapose it against this

Here is a man who believes that the family he loves, and has devoted his life’s work to, doesn’t love him back. That they, in fact, despise him. Every single one of his siblings, and the only living parent he has left, all of them hate him.

It’s just so bleak, because he’s not just saying that they don’t love him, but also because he implies that they don’t understand the way he loves, the way he has devoted himself to them and he doesn’t know how else to love.

Then you have Kate telling him that she loves him so very much that she cannot bear it.

And she says this immediately after he expresses his love in a way he knows how to. Not as an “I love you” in words, but in saying that her home is also their child’s home, her culture is also his culture. That he’ll learn, that he wants to spend time and effort to learn about her home and history and teach it to their child. It’s very much an act of devotion.

Kate understands this. She understands how much he loves her. His way of loving is easy for her to understand.

And, she loves him back. She appreciates the way he loves her, it makes her love him even more, till it’s almost too much to bear.

Can you imagine what such a declaration means to a man who believed that he was doomed to be despised by the very people he loves because of the way he loves. He believed that his expression would go not just unreturned but unnoticed because he didn’t know how to translate it to his family.

And here comes Kate, who shows him that he doesn’t have to translate anything, because she speaks the same language. She understands the love he’s expressing and she returns it.

To be truly loved is to be known and no one knows or loves Anthony better than Kate.

the storytelling in nosferatu 2024 is multilayered, it is full of symbolism and metaphors and should be analyzed within the framework of the gothic medium and context.

orlok is the manifestation of ellen's desires. and in this sense, orlok *is* ellen. or at least the part of her spirit that she has been repressing since her desires are viewed as inherently sinful and impure in the puritanical victorian society.

orlok assaults ellen, yes, but this too should be viewed as a metaphor within the context of the storyline.

the desires that ellen has are viewed as dark, thus she perceives them as violent since she fights to tame her own identity that hungers to be freed. orlok coming to her during her puberty is a metaphor for her sexual awakening. it is viewed as dirty, so she experiences it with shame and as if it's unwelcome.

orlok is an appetite. whose appetite? ellen's. it's not simply an appetite for sex. it's an appetite for life and power. this underlying conflict within ellen is revealed when she is talking to anna on the beach and confesses that she hungers for smtng beyond what is given to her.

speaking of anna, the film hints at her love for ellen being more than platonic friendship. so, it's notable that orlok afflicts anna after she sleeps with ellen. what does this mean metaphorically? well, perhaps anna's feelings for ellen have grown to the point where she starts feeling discomfort in the life she is living, and the inability to face and accept her feelings manifests into the sickness. the four rats on her body represent her family and the darkness that befalls anna represents the crumbling of her false idyllic life. in this case, orlok is anna's appetite for ellen.

so, what happens in the end? yes, ellen sacrifices herself but what happens on a deeper level?

by succumbing to her desires (orlok) willingly, she embraces her own self and accepts her hunger, thus freeing herself of shame - purging the darkness. her desire is dark no more, it's basked in the sunlight and surrounded by the lilacs. she dies bc she transcends into one with own self!

honestly the positioning of common-sense sun protection- hats, parasols/sun umbrellas, sunscreen, etc. -as either prissy and affected or unnecessary anti-aging obsession is one of the most dangerous lines we've collectively been fed as a society, for 100 years now

like I get where it all started, I do. there ARE health benefits to sun exposure in moderation, those were starting to be understood around the 1910s, and the 1920s fancied themselves the inventors of science and Women Doing Things OutdoorsTM because of some discoveries made and voting rights gained around that time. tanning was the new miracle cure! it meant you were outdoors and active- with no consideration that the "active" part might be what made people feel good, not so much the endless sun exposure! it spoke to European or tropical holidays!

(if you were white. if you had natural, healthy dark skin, no dice; keep rubbing heavy metals on your body to look lighter. there's just no winning)

having complicated feelings about the politics of rage

like that specific kind of debate bro whose videos are all "liberal DESTROYED raging feminist OWNED by calm facts and logic haha i'm so smart and cool" who thinks anyone not in a perfect stoic state must immediately be wrong (and by proxy their ability to "argue" about things that don't affect them divisive topics calmly means they must be right)

seeing people finding their ways to scream into the void for reaping week or vent the anger and indignity at how screwed up our world is... why is it so taboo? why is it so bad to be upset at, yknow, things that should upset any rational, compassionate person?

because yeah, anger isn't rational and tends to find targets rather than solutions, but for fluff's sake it doesn't just go away! you can't turn off your passion! and you shouldn't! you should be upset! you should be upset about climate change and billionaires and rising fascism! you should be upset that the world is unjust!

but we've created, or accepted, or failed to question, this framework where being calm makes you more correct and being visibly passionate or upset is a bad thing, where being riled up by someone who thinks you don't deserve rights is a sign of weakness, where caring loudly and vibrantly is somehow bad optics because being angry looks bad.

angry people are dangerous. angry people can't be trusted. angry people shouldn't be listened to. angry people can't control their emotions. angry people should just calm down. angry people should be subdued.

like. look. the doomerism and despair is strong outside of communities like this. so often i find myself asking where is your rage!? where is your hope?! your joy, your passion, your conviction that a better world will be made!

i spent a long time drowning in some pretty rough crap. when i managed to crawl out of it, the first thing i felt was relief. the second was burning, white-hot rage that i had lived like this, that i had been allowed to live like this. anxiety makes you want to shrink down, be as small as possible, as unintrusive, as unnoticeable. anger told me to be loud, be bright, be visible, shout from the rooftops that i deserved better, turn passion into action instead of wallowing.

yes, i am angry at the world and i should be. i am upset that people who have more money than i can even conceive of can run the planet into the ground and blame me for using too much plastic. i am upset that my existence is someone else's political fodder they can fearmonger about for engagement. i am upset that people are dying over numbers on a graph and lines on a map. i am upset that billions of dollars for guns and tanks gets written off without question, but the single mother of two on food stamps is what's draining the budget. i am upset and i'm not going to apologize for it, because that isn't "letting my emotions control me," it's having basic fluffing compassion for other people.

It’s not my usual content but it’s important. It’s a disservice to only call Kendrick’s performance a televised fuck you to drake. It was so much more than that. It was an open critique on the current state of America, it was a live performance at one of America’s biggest events where he spoke against America’s racism and descent into fascism. Yes he performed Not Like Us and of course Drake was ripped to shreds (again) but it is so much more than that.
