What’s up with Fear and Hunger? You’re the second person I’ve seen blogging about it and I’m curious. It’s a video game - is it difficult or scary?

It's both!

Fear and Hunger is a survival horror game masking itself as an RPG. It kind of has a similar vibe to Pathologic, if you're familiar with it? Both games gained cult following due to how difficult and unforgiving they are, although to be honest, a lot of the difficulty in Fear and Hunger comes from not knowing what you're doing when you first start playing. That's very much on purpose - the game doesn't explain shit. As a result, you die a lot (especially if you try to play the game like a normal RPG), but each run helps you to gain a bit more knowledge of how the game, its world and the enemies operate, making each successive run slightly easier and more efficient.

The first game in the series is a dungeon crawler heavily inspired by Berserk, while the second game is a weird mix of a post-WWII setting, a battle royale premise, and eldritch horror (although that last one is also very much present in the first game). Both games are very brutal and come with a ton of content warnings, but they're also made in the RPGMaker, so you know. Personally, I found that due to the weird stylised look of RPGMaker games, the graphic violence never felt like too much, even if the acts being depicted were in themselves brutal/disturbing.

It's what made me fall into a rabbit hole of watching playthroughs/videos about the lore of Fear and Hunger, which in turn really got me into the game's story and made me want to play it myself. Mihawk actually continually creates new stages of grief in his unmoving stance to Pretend Everything’s Fine.

He’s not in love with you, he just has every bit of info on your likes, dislikes, and stories tucked away in his memory for convenience. He didn’t even consciously decide to do that actually. It’s just a fluke or maybe it was because it’s all such easy info to remember; it’s certainly not because all that information has special importance. It’s most definitely not because you look at him with such joy and gratitude every time you realize that he’s remembered something about you. Nor is it how beautifully his heart aches when your face glows with appreciation and affection for him.

He’s helping you out because your skills are disappointing, not because he sees you as a being of boundless potential. It has nothing to do with the pride he finds in each stride you make, whether by his guiding or your own breakthroughs. Nothing at all to do with how, day by day, he finds it more precious to watch you grow than the beloved gardens surrounding his castle.

His restlessness and temper when you’re gone are only because he has to take over all the tasks you do at the castle. Of course he’s not happy having unnecessary things out back on his plate, it was so much better being able to hand off half of those so he has time for the things that are important. Like swordsmanship and your shared hours to end each day. He doesn’t miss you bugging him all of the time; he can take care of himself without your drop ins to bring him water and snacks, or calls that dinner’s ready, or excited recommendations for books he always ends up enjoying, or observations on all the inane things around you (he obviously sees everything and it’s not better sharing them and a present existence with you, nope), or the rare occasions you speak your worry for his dour and lonely life that cut right to the heart of him. Those are what he misses the absolute least; he’s used to being called cold and heartless and alone, he doesn’t need you saying it but worse - noticing the heartlessness is unfortunately a lie, that there’s been something raw and painful festering in him for years, kept far from where anyone can touch and exhausting him of life’s pretenses.

He has no hope that you could possibly help fix that (just as much as you’re a balm for that wound, closeness to you rips it wide open).

There will have to be some change to your routine dancing around each other for him to accept his feelings for you and become that self-aware king instead of the willfully-ignorant peasant. This could be a threat of you leaving, likely not in you giving him that ultimatum but in more gradual ways that circumstance usually does. Maybe you begin to get into your head that he’ll never have feelings for you, and in your acceptance of that you begin to seek other hearts to share. Maybe you run from the depths of your own emotions for him, slowly shifting your life to be less and less at the castle, seeking opportunities that will take you to further seas.

Or maybe life does throw you both a much more drastic cause for change - an explosive argument when you seek a new love, or you unloading all your worry for him and fears that he is heartless while he’s frozen stiff, or him knowing the deep fear of not having you in his life in any capacity when your life is almost taken. Regardless of the cause, once he does acknowledge his feelings, he will absolutely act on it. He is a man of drive and dedication after all.

Now Mihawk is a lucky son of a bitch because it is very likely that you don’t know for a fact he has any interest in you until the Cool and Confident stage kicks in. He’d be mortified if you ever found out how desperately he tried to patch the dam in him that barely kept his overflowing interest, affection, and adoration at bay.

I hope you do find out because that needs to be held over his head for the rest of his life and then some 👌🏻

the folk of the air trilogy - holly black

enemies to friends-ish to enemies to lovers, mc is a badass and the li is so in love (hes also a menace but mc kinda covers that lmao)

this is a 3 book series with a new series that just dropped that happens after the events of these 3 books

the order is: the cruel prince, the wicked king, the queen of nothing, stolen heir (the new book) but there are also books you can read in between (that i havent read myself)

by far the best book series ive read, i would sell my soul to read it again for the first time

circe - madelline miller

this is a story about circe, a godess (i think) from greek myth. the writing was beautiful, but since its myth, if youre not interested i dont reccomend

the midnight library - matt haig

i'm actually not sure what category this falls into.

mc has an accident and ends up at a library at exactly midnight, where the weird librarian tells her that this library is her life (of sorts). basically each book in the library is how her life couldve been like based on some decisions she made

and she keeps going to these other versions of her life by reading the books until she realizes hey, she wants to live, and goes back to her original life

not my favorite, but still an okay one

dune - frank herbert

this is a classic, but it was really good

i dont remember the details, all i really remember was that i had sth for the mc

fr tho its really good, give it a go if long books dont intimidate you

this book is so well written istg

mc is a child, first of all. and i dont mean like a teen i mean shes 8 max, shes a literal child but its okay bc there isnt that much action in this one

the main idea of the book is about how precious time is, but its told through such an interesting way. there are time thieves that steal other people's time to live, making it look like theyre helping people save time on mundane things, and momo stops them (not in an insane way i promise)

the secret garden - frances hodgson burnett

this is a classic, but dont let that fool you this is a really well written book

this one has almost no action in it btw

mc is also a child here (shes maybe 12 at most), she moves into the mansion of her uncle after her family dies where she starts to behave like an actual child instead of some spoiled princess/lh

so one day while going on a stroll in the garden area (?) bc no one is there to take care of her now, she finds a secret garden and decides hey since no one seems to care for this garden, this is mine now

ah moonbyul… it was very stupid calling her. and i can only imagine what yoongi is going to say whenever he finds out. obviously the car was hers and she’d told hoseok that her ex had bought it for her, i think they’re going to question why a random woman was dropping it off and where it had been this entire time and i think that’s going to cause a little more trouble

especially since moonbyul is gonna want compensation for doing this favor, i think her pretending to be ditzy and moonbyul brushing her off was just a way for her to ask the m/c for something when she needs it because now she’s in debt to her 😭 i think she’ll rock up to the house and ask the m/c to go out with her or something and hopefully another member of the pack if there to stop her because who knows what moonbyul will do when they’re alone.. i hope at least yoongi is there because as the beta he can kinda maybe steer the situation away from something bad

Okay, here we go. My darling anon, I had to HUNT in my blog archive to find this post, but here is my basic rundown of Rammstein itself as a band (<-linked). So come back here after reading that post if you really don't know anything about the band bc this def won't make any sense. In THIS post I'd love to discuss WHY I'm so obsessed R+ and all the things that I personally love about them. I will format it in bullet points to spare myself and everyone's sanity:

I feel like the most obvious point should be the first; I love their music! I grew up on industrial and synth, so introducing metal to that mix is like a heavenly mashup. The heavy guitar, the synth keyboard, the gorgeous vocals and deep (often complicated) lyrics??? I would insert the music directly into my chest cavity if I could and that sounds really fucking weird but that's where I feel like it should live 🧍🏻‍♀️

I have daddy issues point blank, that much is obvious from my blog LMAOOO so ofc latching onto gruff middle aged men is a fundamental human need for me at this point

The style and uniqueness of the band is incredible. Who else do you know that lights everything on fire while looking like they just walked off a movie set? Their outfits are so fucking awesome. Like every time I see a new fit I eat that shit up and stare at pics for hours on end because they're so intricate and cool and kinda kinky?? I WISH I could be their fashion designer like jfc. Also their makeup/ face paint is always killer. I need to kiss their stylists fr !!! The 90's-y2k looks are some of my favs

the history of the band is also very interesting. a bunch of weird dudes from East Germany end up becoming pals and form a band and rise to stardom while soldiering through the trials and tribulations such fame throws their way? love an underdog story. I highly recommend watching the documentary Rammstein in Amerika, it gives a lot of insight into the band's origins and history up through 2015

Some of the shit they pull is so freaky and weird that its camp at this point. The dick mold dildos? camp. The fact that they need licenses to use all their pyrotechnics? camp. Being arrested for public indecency? camp.

I am incredibly, overwhelmingly, unhingedly down bad for Till, Richard, and Paul (and also Schneider to an extent but not as much). I would allow for unspeakable things to be done to me if given even the slightest opportunity if you know what I'm saying

PAUL'S HAIR !!!! He is so silly goofy but I fucking LOVE Paul's stupid little haircuts. like yass go off with your little monk bowl cuts I'm eating it up I'm putting you in my pocket

everyone is so fucking queer. like. deadass. Paul and Richard regularly kissing on stage is so precious ???? they're just two besties being besties kissing n shit. The band also supports the lgbtq+ community and are outspokenly against bigotry which is always a win. A lot of people have accused them of being bigots themselves and they're like ummm haha no get fucked (cue "Links 2 3 4")

Richard is a perfect little baby angel and I would die for him. I love his spiky hair. I love his nail polish; I paint my nails like him. He is so cute. I love the way he speaks, in German and in English. I also LOVE his band Emigrate, esp the most recent album. He's so awesome 😭 that being said I wish he wouldn't smoke like a chimney because I dread hearing the news one day that he has cancer but ofc I can't do anything about that in the slightest

Darling little (not so little...) Doom Schneider has an incredibly gorgeous side profile. And I love the pornstache he occasionally sports. He's also another one who is just like. A Normal Guy in my head. He is also very very pretty and very well spoken. I loved listening to him talk during the Rammstein in Amerika documentary

I also think Ollie is also just a Dude,, tho admittedly I don't really even think about him much because he is so normal and not unhinged that he kinda just blends into the background most times. He is 6'7 tho so that is fucking insane

My current WIP is set to be a full-length novel that is intended to be the first book of a trilogy - I have the titles and much of the overall story outline mapped out, but I feel apprehensive about revealing very many details about it. When does teasing information about a forthcoming release cease being a pragmatic part of marketing? At what point is it just being too precious about my oh-so-original idea?

There are legitimate concerns regarding withholding info about a book still in development - sadly, concepts, names, and designs can be stolen and it’s a difficult battle no matter how much of a claim you have. That said, do I really think literary thieves are out in the wild scheming on ways they can usurp my intellectual property? They’d have to be aware of me in the first place in order to lift any of my ideas. Being so guarded about my stories feels like such a newbie author thing to do, and it’s a tough habit to shake. So, one of the reasons I’m so coy about providing even the slightest tidbit of info about my latest novel is that, yes, I still struggle with the notion that some miscreant will think my idea is so brilliant that they just can’t resist swiping it. The more realistic reason is that it is still very early in the developmental process and things change. Chronicling the creative process can be fascinating, but at the end of the day, I want to avoid confusion about a piece of work that could undergo title changes as well as general story switcheroos.

As an admittedly vague example, as of this writing, I have introduced a major change in the narration - a different storytelling device than what I had originally conceived. This is something I decided that I will at least try - I have to see what it looks like, so-to-speak. It involves a bit of a time jump; a sort of past and present prism all told via first person POV. This idea could end up in the scrap heap, but it is too intriguing for me not to explore. One of my personal rules of writing is to find the most interesting way to tell the story, and if this particular idea that originated out of left field improves the book, then it is all for the better. After all, the only “real” rule of writing is to produce a story that someone enjoys. It’d be nice if it made money, too, but one thing at a time.

All this interior drama is unfolding within my mind palace, but to the outside world, no one knows much of anything and that is because of the aforementioned rookie preciousness. Ego also plays a factor, too. Strange as it sounds, I almost don’t want to rearrange my story’s structure despite its excitement because it deviates so much from what I said I’d do - what I said to myself, that is. The truth may lie in that my opening sequence has expanded into three chapters. The editor part of my brain demands I kill my darlings and only retain the key points and move the story along. Stupid logic.

The chapter consolidation may still happen, but I had one of those pesky ideas that seem too enticing to ignore. But much like the eclipse, I can’t help but think perhaps I should simply let logic takes its natural course and block out the bright sun of endless ideas. After all, the totality of my time that I can spend creating all of this is very limited and I don’t want to wait another twenty years for another completed book to resurface.

Alas, things are still looking sunny and the future is radiant with new possibilities. Maybe one day I will feel confident enough to simply post my new story’s details and watch with satisfaction as it gets ignored in the never-ending stream of social media.

'm not even gonna explain how the archons adopted you They Just Did. maybe they encountered you one day and just decided to co-parent. maybe there was an elaborate plan. who knows, you don't and neither does venti.

zhongli is definitely the more 'parental' one of the three, he works with hu tao after all. baal beats venti by a smidge, she's still a bit unorthodox in her ways but she does have her moments of being a proud mom. venti has no idea how to take care of a child. but he does play with you a lot! better at the other two when it comes to having fun with you.

zhongli does disagree with the fact venti lifts you high into the air to play sometimes but ffppff whatever!! you like it n you giggle n you look happy so venti gives the old man a smug look before doing it again. venti won't let you get hurt after all.

they're all protective over you, but baal can go overboard at points. you're a child after all. if there's even a small rumor doing around she won't hesitate to find the person or group who started it and teach them a liil lesson. the other two archons say that's not the healthiest option for your friendships but baal says it's fine. you're none the wiser as you play with one of the shibas.

ok i'm just gonna say it, zhongli will use fatui funds to get you stuff. want some candies? childe gave zhongli some mora so he'll use it for some. need new clothes?? banks got it covered. plushie you liked? yep, yours. don't thank the fatui, call childe a stupid fatui man anyways. eat his mask too.

for my own self indulgence, their arms are always open to comfort you. zhongli can set work aside for another day if you ever start feeling down or just want some company. he can always tell his stories from the 6000+ years of his existence to comfort you.

venti's always willing to stay by your bed if you can't sleep. he'll play some songs on his lyre to calm you down and will of course offer his own tales if you need. even when you fall asleep, he'll stay by your side if you need him.

as said before, baal can get quite physical if anyone speaks ill of you. but of course she will comfort you through it as well. her arms are open when you need her. she can show you parts of inazuma and show you the floral and fauna around, even if you've seen it before.

the smile on your face is the most precious thing to the three of them. they'll do anything to help you through hard times. you hold an important place in their hearts after all, you mean the world to them.

while the three of them are chaotic together, they have a shared interest of protecting you and keeping you safe and happy. if you want to go on a picnic with them all it's happening. no, venti doesn't bring alcohol. he knows better.

you played with butterflies as the archons, or your parents, watched you quietly. that day you had a strong urge to go on a picnic with the three so you walked to zhongli and asked him. venti was immediately excited, already chatting with you where you all would go for the trip. you bounced up and down as you told him all the places you wanted to go, from starsnatch all the way to inazuma city.

while going across each nation wasn't something you could do, you could at least settle with staying in liyue and going to the other places another day.with baal and her duties, she was harder to rope into the event. but after you pleading with her, she had agreed to come along. zhongli did most of the cooking for the other two, venti played with you while waiting, and baal helped zhongli with preparations outside of the food. once everything was prepared, the four of you set off to a meadow-y area cleared of monsters and safe to stay in.

"we should do this more," venti said, looking at the other two.

zhongli gave a silent nod as he continued to watch you. baal gave no answer as she turned to venti, then back to you. venti's lips twitched downward before you came running at the three archons with flowers in your hand. you handed each of them one flower, keeping one to yourself as well. "the butterflies landed on these flowers so they're important!"

"why thank you," zhongli smiled. he held the flower close to him as he patted you on the head.

"and they're the prettiest flowers too!" venti said.

"they indeed are," baal nodded. she'd have to make something out of the flowers to remember them.

you beamed as you held the final flower close to your chest. it was always a treat to spend time with all three of your parents. you already knew it might've been hard to do so, so being with all three of them made you so happy it was hard to ever feel down.

even as it came to a close and you walked back to your house, one hand being held by zhongli and the other being held by baal, you felt good. "we should do this again soon," you said.

zhongli could practically feel venti smirking from the side. why did you have to agree with the bard so much…

"we should! maybe even if a month," venti suggested.

"ahem -" zhongli cleared his throat, "we can try to do as soon as we can."

the small pout on your face didn't go unnoticed. baal looked to zhongli, who gave a nod as she picked you up into her arms.

"i can't promise a month, we will surely organize one soon. just so we can see you all together again."

you smiled and wrapped your arms around baal's neck in a hug. "okay! i'll be so excited!"

Do I mind if I ask how you approach writing longer fic? I've always struggled to write anything more than maybe two chapters long and I'm curious if you have a particular method to how you approach such stories.

Thank you so much for this ask! I absolutely love it when people ask me for writing advice because it makes me feel like a Smart Person Who Knows Things.

Before we start, here is one grain of salt to take all of this with: I have a naturally long-form brain. It is very hard for me to write something less than 1k. Short fiction is great, and there is nothing wrong with sticking to short things if that's what your brain likes to do.

So. You have decided to write a story. This is going to focus on "stories". Some people write fic that's more freeform or whatever, I am not going to cover that. What I mean by a story is this:

It starts

Some stuff happens

It ends

It is highly probable that your story contains a change of state, which could be that a villain is defeated, or a goal is reached, but it could also be that character falls in love with another, or someone learns to like broccoli.

I like to start out by completing the sentence, "This is a story where _______". This is basically like coming up with a summary for an ao3 post, except that it doesn't need to be catchy. Lots of different kinds of things could go in that blank! It could literally be what happens: This is a story where Ichigo goes back in time and punches young Aizen in the nose. It could be about what you want to explore: This is a story where Hitsugaya gets a better understanding of his zanpakutou. It could be about the vibe you want to achieve: This is an AU where everyone is in a punk rock band and has cool hair and outfits. The idea of this is to clearly define what you, the author, is interested in writing. Make sure it feels right! Maybe you pick the first one, but when you say it out loud, you say, "You know, I really just want Ichigo to go back in time so he can horse around with young Renji and Rukia and punching Aizen in the nose is just an excuse for that." That may sound dumb, but it's fine, actually! Most people don't read stories strictly for the plot, they read stories for the implications of those plots! Will my favorite two characters kiss? Will there be funny interactions between these two groups of characters? Will there be sick fights? Stories are excuses to have scenes. Sometimes, you will have a story where the interesting sequence of events is the draw, but the point is to know what you're about.

Once you feel happy with your "mission statement", you need to decide the bounds of your story: where it starts and where it ends. It may be easier to start with the end. In some cases, it may be obvious from your mission statement: everyone gets home, a villain is defeated, Kenpachi realizes the meaning of friendship. On the other hand, let's look at that punk rock AU. You've picked a vibe, but you don't really have a natural story arc. It has to have a destination, though, otherwise, it's not really a story, it's a recipe for 3 chapters of an abandoned fanfic. So brainstorm a little: Maybe they get a record deal? Maybe they win a Battle of the Bands? Maybe Byakuya accepts that the band is actually good and tells Rukia he is proud of her. Do not settle for a plot just because it works. Pick something that makes you excited! You're the one who is gonna have to write it!

I said that we needed to pick a beginning point, too, but I'm actually going to skip that for now. The next thing I do is think of all the Big Scenes I want to write, the ones you are hype to write, the ones that pop in your head as you think about the premise. Make a bullet list. They don't need to be in order. The descriptions don't need to be super detailed, but write down anything about it that is important to you. If there's a mood or a snippet of dialogue or a joke you want to make, go ahead and jot that down so you don't forget it later. What you're doing now is putting broad blotches of color on a canvas, filling in space and leaving the detail for later.

Once you are pretty happy with what you have down, try to arrange it in chronological order. Put your end at the end (if it wasn't one of your big scenes, add it now). The next task is figuring out how to traverse your scenes. You've already picked out where you want to spend the majority of your energy. The rest, I regret to tell you, is your slog writing. Now, it often happens that you will find joy in some of these scenes and your best writing may occur there, but that's serendipity. These are the scenes that you are gonna have to make yourself sit down and write, so you honestly want to limit them to just the ones you need.

So how do we do this? Look at the first thing on the list. Can you start there? If so, congrats, that's your beginning. If you can't, what needs to happen to get to there? Where can you start so that you can get to your first fun scene as soon as possible? There. That’s it. You’ve picked your beginning, good job! Now, go through the rest of your list, and add in things that must happen, even if you don’t particularly look forward to writing them. The characters need to travel from geographic point A to point B. Shuuhei needs to say something that Izuru hears and misinterprets. The Central 46 makes a new law. If you have a good idea of how these things happen, go ahead and write them down, but it’s okay if you don’t know yet. Fill in all the blanks so that if you think of each bullet list as a scene, you could read it as a story, start to end. Once you get writing, you might add more scenes, or move things around or whatever, but you should have a thing that functions as a story.

If you struggle with this, an alternative is a story with a very strong structure that is going to guide you though what you have to write.Here are two examples from my own stories Hold On, Hold On (which is only one chapter, but the principle is the same) is structured around the 5 stages of grief. Not Broken, Just Bent takes place over roughly a week, and I just decided what happened every day of the week. See You on the Other Side takes place in the middle of a bunch of canon events, which worked at mile markers.

Congratulations. You’ve just made a rough outline!

Special note for avoiding burnout!: I am a slogger. I will drag myself through the broken glass of an interminable plot to get to a single thirsty scene. That's why, at this stage, I try to look at the ratio of what I want to write to what I must write. It's gonna vary for everyone, but this is a hobby, and if looking at this proto-outline makes you feel deeply tired, maybe this isn't a good story to be devoting your time to! Can you carve it down? Can you chuck two scenes you really want to write and get rid of 80% of the slog? Or maybe you can't! In that case, just write that thirsty scene as a standalone drabble! Or just go work on something else! Maybe in the future, this one will come back to you and you’ll have a fresh idea or a renewed enthusiasm for it.

Another thing I sometimes like to do at this point is to write out some notes about my characters and their motivations and moods. Character A is homesick. Character B is so determined to defeat the enemy that they are having a hard time being sympathetic to Character A. Character C cares for both A and B and is trying to support them both. This is sort of background info that you want to keep in your head as you are writing. Depending on the type of story you are writing, this might actually be the main plot, or it might be happening subtly, but adding to the emotional impact of the story. It’s very easy for me to write these sorts of emotional arcs, but if you struggle with that, you may wish to go ahead and made a more detailed outline for that, too.

Now, it’s time to start writing! I am great at beginnings-- it is very often the case for me that the opening scene was one of my Big Tentpole Scenes. (Before you hate me too much, I make up for this by being double horrible at endings; just let me have this) Usually, I will start at the beginning and write linearly for as long as I can until I get stuck. Then, I will look forward on my outline and do the next chronological scene that I feel like writing. In general, if I sit down to write and there is something I have an urge to write, that trumps everything else. Inspiration is a precious commodity, and you should embrace it when it hits! You can slog any day. I will occasionally hold off writing a scene that I really want to, because I am saving it, like a prize for myself for getting that far. This is a very personal process of figuring out what motivates your brain and then giving your brain what it needs to be its most productive.

Eventually, you will run out of things you are excited to write, but the good news is, you’ve got a bunch of story now! Odds are that what’s left is going to be a lot of those connective tissue scenes, and you’re just going to have to do them, except that now, because you’re connecting two concrete points instead of two abstract points, it will be a lot easier. You can continue running jokes you’ve started. Maybe you invented a cafe in an earlier scene where your characters hang out and you can have them return there. Try to think of ways to make these scenes more fun, both for yourself to write and for your reader to read. 

Around this time, I like to start refining that rough strokes outline into what I will call an “as-built” outline. (This is an engineering term where you update your plans or models for something to reflect any changes that had to be made along the way). This is a great activity to do at times when you feel like you have writers block. I write down every scene I have written as a 2-3 word blurb, in order. I break the scenes into what I think makes logical chapters, and I will do a word count on those prospective chapters and write it down. As you do this, you will realize that maybe you can move a scene from here to there, which will make it 1000% easier to write. Things may be happening too much, or you’ve got the characters eating three times in the same chapter. If you have subplots and dangling threads, this is where you make sure they get closure. I know this sounds very headache-y, but you are so far along in the story at this point that it’s really not-- it’s a way to look at the problems you have left. Use some sort of formatting (I like to bold things I haven’t done and sometimes I put them in red) and it gives you a very visual to-do list.

You specifically mentioned multi-chapter fanfics and I admit that I don’t tend to think in chapters, I tend to think of the story as a whole and just break it up where it feels natural. The as-built outlining I described is very helpful in making sure that my chapters feel balanced. They don’t necessarily need to be the same length, but I like them to have the same amount of stuff in them. One chapter may basically contain one long scene, and other may contain many short ones. I don’t tend to, but you can certainly have a fanfic that varies between short and long chapters, that can actually be an interesting effect. But like I said, I always like to know what I am doing, and so having it mapped out, you can say “welp, this is what I’ve done, how do I feel about that?”

Polynya, you may be saying at this point, do you write the whole fanfic before you post any of it? and I regret to inform you, the answer is yes. A lot of people write as they go, and I have made one attempt at this and I didn’t like it. I don’t like locking myself in, I just need to be able write out of order and go back and change things. Here is the story of a little in love: someone gave me an AU prompt and I got mildly obsessed with it, and wrote 5 snapshots drabbles in that universe, ending with a slight cliffhanger ending. I probably should have stopped there, but I decided to keep going. I wrote out an outline of 5 acts where the first act was detailed to the degree of each chapter being specified. The chapters here were much smaller than I usually make chapters: 1-2k. I wrote act i and ii and it was actually great, and then I hit act iii which required a lot of set up for misunderstandings and a mini romance arc. I couldn’t wing it, but nor could I figure it all out with outlining. I write dialogue in almost sort of an improv “Yes, and...?” style, so until I do it, I don’t know what’s going to happen. So, what I did was treat the second half of act iii as a complete story in the process I describe above, wrote the entire rest of it, and then posted it. One might notice that the chapter lengths grew to 3-5k each. I have two more acts to go, and I haven’t decided how I am going to do them yet, but I suspect I will treat each of them as their own mini-stories.

(I will admit that in Heart is a Muscle, I tend toward chapters that are about 10k long, and this is honestly too long, someone should smack me. If you like punchy chapters, 1-2k is good. I think 3-6k is probably an ideal chapter length. Is this how long the chapters are in my latest fanfic? Absolutely not.)

Okay, so there’s one more step, which is quality control. I am habitual re-reader-- I read my fanfics-in-progress over and over and over while I am working on them. I understand that not everyone does this, but I am usually the primary audience for my own writing, and this is the actual fun part for me. Nevertheless, you should re-read your work at least once, to make sure it hangs together.

This is purely optional, but I recommend it: get a writing friend (if you don’t like re-reading your work, I recommend this even more strongly). If you can get a full-service beta reader, that’s great, but if you can’t find someone, or if receiving that level of critique stresses you out, it’s perfectly valid to just find a friend who will read your stuff and a) shower you with compliments, b) reassure you about parts you aren’t sure about (or suggest ways to help) and c) point out any huge problems you missed. When I am writing a long fanfic, it is a huge motivational factor for me to be able to send my beta chapters as I finish them. If you are already an established writer, and you have people who consistently comment on your fic, they might be overjoyed to get a sneak peak at your work.

And that’s it! That’s the way I do it, anyway! Some people are able to sit down and write a very detailed outline and the write it start-to-finish. Good for them, I say! I have tried this and it doesn’t work great for me. I will admit that some of my fics (especially my early ones) I just sat down and banged out whole-cloth like an insane person and they are generally better than the ones I actually plan out, but that’s not a reproducible process.

As one final mechanical note, I usually write in Google Docs, which I can access on multiple devices (I used to write a lot on my phone), has convenient sharing functionality, and I use the ao3 html formatting script add-in. I generally have two documents for a single story-- one is the outline, and any other notes I want to have handy. I’ll usually put a trashcan space at the bottom for scenes that got cut but I don’t want to lose. The other is the fanfic itself.

You were tied to the chair for a long time, until he came and released you. You immediately thought about the easiest escape route, but the abandoned, damp pavilion in which you were, behind huge boilers, seemed to have no end.

He smiled calmly, standing a few feet in front of you with his arms crossed.

- Agent Y/N. What an honor. - his voice was sympathetic, lulled by a hoarse and low tone - I've been looking for you for a long time. I heard you're trying to get me in trouble.

You laughed bitterly, spitting on the floor to get rid of the taste of the gag that had been in your mouth just minutes before.

- I feel really sorry that I didn't cause more problems, then.

Surprisingly, he laughed back, as if he were in the presence of a rebellious child who he needed to educate.

- You didn't answer the questions my subordinates asked you, did you?

- I will never reveal anything. You can send those dumbasses back and make them punch me more. - you touched your aching jaw with your free hands, without looking away from the one who you knew were the leader of the Organization - I can deal with them easily.

With his arms crossed, he rubbed his expensive shiny shoe on the floor, lifting his index finger.

Feeling a cold shiver down your spine, you stayed still.

- I have all the time in the world, my dear. I can wait until you're ready to start. - with a singing smile that exposed two deep dimples, which now seemed sharply malignant, he turned to the darkness - Ah, and don't even think about running away. If this place already seems big to you, know that it is bigger than you think. And there are some rather interesting obstacles around here.

With one last look over his shoulder, the faint moonlight that came in through the windows reflecting off the lenses of his glasses and preventing you from seeing his eyes, he clicked his tongue.

- But, if you insist on trying to escape... - he pronounced, as if he considered the whole situation a great pleasure, and not a threat - I wish you good luck.

Seokjin:

You were in a small house, surrounded by at least 4 tables full of electronic equipment, computer parts, baubles and dust.

The man seated in front of you, with his chin in one hand, kept his eyebrows raised. By moving your hands tied behind your back, you tried to free yourself from the wheelchair in which you were trapped.

- Stay still. - he murmured, harshly. His expression was divided between apprehension and irritation.

- I am still. It is kind of difficult to make any movement while you are tied to a chair.

Without paying any attention to you, he rolled his eyes.

- I don't know why they thought of me as the right person to fulfill this mission. As if I had nothing more important to do. - his face, beautiful as a carved brilliant, was extremely expressive - And now, to make things worse, you still don't want to collaborate with the interrogation!

You smirked, shaking your head in the middle of the room with brown walls and orange lamps.

- I'm sorry for being a stone in your path. I bet if you let me go, you would be relieved. - your tone was acidic.

Bitting his lower lip, he snapped his fingers. With an impulse from the floor, he slid the wheelchair in which he was sitting to one of the tables, turning on one of the computers.

- Actually, I have a better idea. - he said, his plump lips curving into a smile as his fingers typed quickly, as if he were thinking of a joke that only he understood.

After a few quiet seconds, in which the only noises in the house came from the computer, he turned towards you and rotated the computer screen to your direction, so that you could view it entirely.

- I think you will be the one relieved when you collaborate with my questions. - he murmured, pointing the image on the monitor: the security cameras on the street in front of your family's house, recording everything in real time. It was even possible to spot your mother through the window - It's not that hard to find out certain things on social media, you know? I would recommend you to be more careful from now on.

Your smile died on your face, replaced by an expression of fear.

Yoongi:

The stone basement under the busy bar was a much darker place than it had seemed at first. The endless noise of parties was able to hide the most diverse noises.

The man standing at the door, talking to two others who remained in the shade, seemed completely calm. Which was the total opposite of how you felt.

Trying to shake your body to get rid of the rope wrapped around your entire torso, you groaned. You knew that dozens of bruises would form on your arms because of the effort, but you couldn't stop trying.

Dismissing the two henchmen, the man near the door turned in your direction. Approaching with his hands in his pockets, he stopped a few inches away, bending to reach the height where you were trapped.

- As you didn't want to answer when I asked patiently, I decided to change my approach. - with a slow, almost lazy, gummy smile, he took his hands out of his pockets, revealing a pile of pills.

Knowing what "industry" he was in, you were sure those pills were drugs. Although you were afraid of what might happen, you would never let it show.

- What are you going to do? Forcing me to swallow and kill myself from an overdose? - you almost spat, bending forward in an attempt to hit him with your head.

He laughed, and his laugh was a little choked. He smelled of cigarettes, both in his baggy clothes and on his breath.

- Don't be so hasty. I already said that I am very patient, so I would never force you to take one of them. - he shook the pills in his closed fist, letting them make a noise - I'll let you choose one of them.

Grunting, you turned your head.

- The choice is entirely yours. You may take a sweetie pill, which just makes you more relaxed to answer my questions... - his expression went from amusement to a somber seriousness, while he averted his eyes downwards - or you may take a poisoned one that will kill you. Sadly you don't have the option of not taking any pill.

Smiling again, exposing his gums in a way that made his expression frighteningly youthful, he shrugged.

- I hope you have a good eye for analyzing pills. Or at least a good tolerance.

Hoseok:

He was smiling in your direction for good 3 minutes now. Sitting upright, his knees 5 centimeters away from yours (that were tied to each other), he looked like an experienced dealer wanting to convince you to buy something.

You were already so tired that you felt almost ready to "buy it".

- If you tell me some very simple details of the investigation, I promise you will be released without any injuries. - his face was soft and friendly, and he spoke with such conviction that it was easy to accept.

You were sweaty due to the fact that you had been struggling in that chair for hours on end, trying to break free. That damn apartment seemed to be in the end of the world, because no one on the floors above or below made a sound.

It was time to try something different, to put pride aside. You had full faith in your ability to act.

- Do you... really promise? - you asked, in a weak voice and with an innocent expression, which made apparent the tiredness you were feeling (on purpose, of course).

He broke into a big smile, crowned by his shiny, aligned teeth. He looked cheerful as a child who had just won a candy.

- Of course, my dear. - he replied, lightly touching your hand tied on the arm of the chair. His fingers were warm and soft.

You smiled back "timidly". You would lie masterfully, until you convinced that man to let you go. You knew you were able to do that, because it was a necessity.

- Then... I will collaborate.

Caressing your hand briefly, just before letting go and looking you in the eye, his smile lessened a little.

- Just know that liars are not treated so politely. - he murmured, in a practically humming way - And I always know when someone is trying to deceive me, my sweet. Always.

Suddenly, the touch of his fingers no longer seemed as gentle as before.

Jimin:

The man's eyes seemed to burn in his face, just as the hate burned inside you. He was lying beside a round table, stripped, staring at you through half-closed lids.

- This is kind of kinky, don't you agree? - he asked, breaking the silence, his legs spread in a careless pose as he watched you.

You wanted to scream. You pulled your arms out, listening to the clink of the metal rings and then feeling the physical immobility. Being chained to a cement wall by your wrists and ankles, standing for hours, was far from any pleasurable idea. That was a fucking torment.

- Fuck you, you crazy bastard! - you grunted, your voice hoarse in your scratched throat - If I ever have the opportunity, I swear I'll kill you!

He didn't smile, but something in the curve of his eyes exposed the fact that he was enjoying the scene. In a leap, he rose from his chair, an evil idea igniting in his mind.

- What if that opportunity reveals itself now? Could you kill me? - he purred, approaching cautiously. You didn't know if he was teasing or threatening you, as his body movements were unreadable.

- Chained here? How fair is this clash? It is obvious that you will win. - you spoke through, your head hanging forward. You were an accomplished fighter in the police, but no one with their arms and legs trapped would be able to win a hand-to-hand fight.

- Of course I'm going unchain you. I'll even give you some time to warm up. I like fairness in this type of game. - the way he spoke, with pleasure, showed an insatiable desire for combat. You wanted to punch him.

- How can I be sure that you will not cheat? You are a fucking mafious.

This time, he laughed sharply, putting his hands on his stomach.

- I promise you that our fight will be fair, based only on the skills of each one. Especially because, if I win, my only prize will be to chain you back on this wall right here. - he got close enough to hold the sides of your waist with his hands, more firmly than expected. You forced yourself not to shudder - And while I really appreciate the sight, it is nothing that I haven't already seen.

You thought about attacking him right there, but it was better to wait a little more. Using his hands on your waist as a support, he started to unchain you.

Taehyung:

The boy was standing, his back against one of the only walls of the ruined building. The empty terrain you were on was extensive and the wind was blowing strong, turning all that vastness into a damn desert of grassy ice.

You were standing a few feet away, with nothing to hinder your movements. Still, you couldn't move, as you knew he had confiscated your loaded gun and was now keeping it in his pants pocket, ready in case any attempt was made to escape. You didn't want the same thing that happened to your two coworkers, now two bodies lying on the ground in the woods, to happen to you.

- Will you tell or not? - the man asked, boredom evident on his face. His voice was low, peaceful as a lullaby.

- I won't. - you said, shivering from the wind and nervousness. Nothing mattered now, not even your life: you had vowed to keep the investigation a secret, and that's what you would do. You would die with honor, just like the others.

Arching one of his thick eyebrows, he remained still. His mouth went up in one corner, in a angled smile.

- Ah, too bad.

- Shoot fast, can you? - you shouted back, extremely tired of it. You wanted it to end fast.

- I will not shoot you. You are useful, unlike your unintelligent colleagues who tried to attack me.

You clenched your teeth, the sound of the wind almost deafening your ears.

- What are you going to do then?

Wiping the hair off his forehead, which insisted on sliding in all directions, he waved a hand, turning the loaded revolver in one finger.

- Ah, I decided to let your teammates answer the call that the... deceased agents sent on the radio. They will get here behind this wall, as it is the easiest way to access the terrain. - observing the barrel of the gun and then opening the magazine to see how much ammunition was inside, he continued: - It is always good to practice my shooting from a long distance, just to not lose the practice.

Wide-eyed, the scenario in which your colleagues were killed one by one by shots from a hidden sniper crossed your mind. It was terrible.

- But, if you like your colleagues very much and decide that your willingness to offer information is greater than my intention to play target shooting, it may be that things happen in a much easier way. - he stated.

Jungkook:

He almost never looked up from the ground, and when he did, his eyes kept hidden under the brim of his hat. Not that it was easy to spot anything inside a dark and metallic bunker, in which you could barely move because you were handcuffed to the table fixed on the floor.

After hesitating for a long time, the man with tattoos on his fingers sitting in front of you finally spoke:

- You have to answer. I am here just following orders, and you are delaying my other appointments. - if there was something behind which he could hide, he would probably do it. But not out of fear... it was for another reason.

- I already said I won't tell you anything. You can kill me already, dumb child. - you almost roared, the rage accumulated in hours of silence revolting inside you.

Yes, even though he was partially hidden by the shadows, the fact that he was young was evident. More a shy boy than a silent man.

His eyes widening in shock, he stepped back a few inches. With an increasingly wheezing breath, he got up and walked to a door in the corner of the bunker.

- You're making things more difficult for both of us. - he said, with a dangerous tone.

Opening the hidden door with a single movement of his drawing-covered hand, he revealed a gagged figure, struggling and muttering in a useless way: your partner in the police and best friend, Denyel.

You gasped with fright when his figure became visible, his body covered in sweat. With a sudden tug, the tattooed man dragged your friend over to the chair where he himself had been sitting before, forcing him to settle down.

- With each denied answer, a little bit of his life is gone. - the boy's voice was now expressionless, and his hands moved quickly as he took dozens of knives from the belt under his coat and placed them on the table, with a clang - I can make it drag on for hours, believe me. I know exactly how much "life" to remove until there is no more of it left.

When Bokuto scored match point, the volleyball stadium erupted into deafening cheers. 

Somehow though, Bokuto still managed to hear his daughter’s voice through the cacophony. He turned to where Yua stood in the front row of the bleachers, her head barely reaching over the balcony enough to meet his eyes. Her arms were in the air, tiny fists punching in celebration.

He waved, even though what he really wanted was to run to her, hop up into the stands, raise her on his shoulders and declare to the entire gym that she was the reason he did everything. She was his most precious treasure.

Alas, he still had to lineup with his team, listen to his coach’s talk and be interviewed by the press. He knew how these things worked.

So he did, begrudgingly. But by the time he got to the press box he was starting to get anxious. He knew Kuroo and Kenma took good care of Yua—there was no question about that—but it was still hard. 

He wanted to see his little owl so badly it hurt.

“Pardon me… um, Bokuto-san?”

Bokuto blinked, turning to find the first reporter standing in line, notepad and pen in hand. Oops, Bokuto thought, schooling his expression into a bright smile. “Sorry about that!!”

The reporter smiled back, eyes crinkling slightly behind his glasses. They were nice eyes; a blue-green color Bokuto had never seen before. “That’s quite all right. It was an impressive game. Congratulations on scoring the winning point.”

“Thanks! It was the whole team, though. Miya is a great setter! And our captain holds everything together.”

Another smile. “Your team is doing well this year. What are your hopes for the next tournament?”

Bokuto launched into a soliloquy, delighting at how interested the reporter actually seemed. He couldn’t help but notice that the man was very attractive. Gorgeous, even. He was tall and slender, with cheekbones that could cut glass and a mop of soft-looking hair that curled around his ears…

“PAPA!!!!! PAPA I’M HERE!!!!!” 

Bokuto jolted, and so did the reporter, as a tiny ball of energy shot in between them before flinging herself into Bokuto’s arms. 

“Yua! What have I told you about interrupting?” Still, Bokuto hiked her up on his hip. “Can’t you see I’m talking to someone?”

The girl turned the full force of her three-year-old glare onto the reporter. “Who are YOU?” She pouted, and Bokuto winced. “This is… ah, actually, I don’t know his name..”

“Akaashi,” the reporter clarified. “I’m Akaashi Keiji, from Tokyo Sports News.” Akaashi’s long fingers gripped his pen tightly, hovering over his notepad. 

“Ah, nice to meet you, ‘kasshi!” Bokuto grinned. “This is Yua, my little girl. Yua, can say hello to Akaashi-san?”

The girl twisted her mouth. She was silent for a moment, obviously taking in Akaashi’s presence, before loudly declaring: “No! I don’t like him!”

Oh, shit. Bokuto mentally facepalmed. Nervously, he turned back to Akaashi, an apology on his tongue…

But the man was narrowing his eyes right back at Bokuto’s tiny daughter. “I see,” he said, pursing his lips. 

Bokuto almost laughed at how intense Akaashi’s expression was. Didn’t he understand that young kids just don’t have filters yet? They can be blunt, sometimes to a fault, but that’s just how they were until they learned proper manners.

“YUA!” Kuroo was running over. “Sorry, Bo! The second we got down here, she beelined straight for you.”

“No worries.” Bokuto leaned in to kiss Yua’s cheek before passing her back to her godfather. “I promise it won’t be long, okay little owl?”

With one last scowl at Akaashi, the girl accepted her fate, and Bokuto turned his attention back to the interview. 

He couldn’t help but feel a bit sad when the it ended, though. He watched wistfully as Akaashi strolled away, and he moved on to the next reporter. 

Oh well, he thought, it was nice while it lasted…

Fifteen minutes later, however, Bokuto was surprised to find that Akaashi hadn’t left. In fact, he was in the hallway near the locker rooms, with Kenma and Kuroo. Yua was in front of the trio, showing them one of her drawings.

Turned out, Kenma knew Akaashi from college. They had taken some media studies classes together and—Bokuto’s ears perked up—were both members of the school’s Pride coalition. 

Bokuto wished he could get to know the man a bit more. But it was obviously time to go. “Yua’s bedtime is like, right now.” Bokuto sighed. “We should get home. Ready, little owl?” 

The girl shook her head defiantly, but her little hands were rubbing at her eyes. He laughed. “I’ll take that as a yes.” He lifted her up once again. She snuggled into chest. 

“Bokuto-san.” Akaashi’s voice was soft, his demeanor suddenly shy. He bowed. “Thank you again for the interview.” He shuffled in place nervously. “I… um, wanted to give you this.” 

He held out a small piece of paper, which Bokuto realized was a business card. His heart pounded. 

“My contact info,” Akaashi continued. “You know, in case you’d like to get ahold of me for an article. Or, you know, for any other reason…”

Bokuto beamed. 

An hour later, Bokuto finally got Yua to sleep at their apartment. He sat there, smiling fondly as he watched the girl drift slowly into dreamland. 

There were a lot of important people in Bokuto’s life—his mom, his sisters, his friends, teammates. And he expected that more important individuals would slowly find their way into his orbit. (An image of Akaashi flashed in his mind; he gripped the small card in his palm tightly.)

But no one held a candle to his little owl. 

Becoming a single father so early in life wasn’t exactly expected, and it had been a huge challenge, but it was worth it if he got to have this girl in his life.

What's your favorite Seasonal (including Costume Event) Legendary, Solo, and Story Events in Masters in terms of story that you have played so far? I would like to know your opinions and probably your top 3 favorites if you have any!

Also, what do you think of A Golden Future event? I personally love it, but I'm biased because I like the character, so I want to know your opinion!

I did not realize there were so many events broadly, nor so few Solo events, but I'll try and give a top three of each.  It should be easy enough.

STORY: #3) Baking Buddies - Part of this is my own bias.  I love Dawn and Serena, and having an event focused on both is fantastic.  I also just think it's really cute.  Having the focus be on them helping an NPC confess her feelings is precious, and getting to work in Cheryl and Lillie in a way that's actually meaningful was adorable.

#2) A Golden Future - Yes, I like your boy's event.  It's really strong.  At its most basic level, no MU is nice, and Team Rocket finally taking over as the problem causer is just and proper.  Silver remains a great presence, we get to see all the protagonists, Morty's presentation is great, and the resolution is really satisfying and feels appropriate given what they've built up.  I do feel like just having fake Ho-oh feathers is a bit silly, especially since everyone's freaking out about finding them but they were being sold, but it's a small issue with an otherwise very solid event.

#1) Shining Heart of Dragons - Unquestionably the best story event.  This is some of their best writing.  We get to see Iris as a champion in a way we never did before.  We see her grappling with the fact she's new, inexperienced, and doesn't have much of a following from others.  Her struggling with her own inabilities hits hard, and it's really compelling to see her rise to the challenge.  We get character from Diantha for the first time ever, and she's great.  Seeing her take on this almost mentor role is fantastic, and suits her perfectly.  Even Lance has some great bits, and that's something I thought impossible.  This event is probably my favorite in the game.  It's so good.

SOLO: Why are there so few?

#3) A Sweet Secret - By virtue of there not being many options.  It's cute.  A bunch of random trainers want to get their mentors sweets they'll like, but try to keep it secret while gathering info from the fancy ladies, and the fancy ladies just instantly guess who it's for.  It's cute.

#2) For the Fans - I think Lisia and Elesa are a cool combo, and I like them a lot.  I think...this would be the one where we establish that Hilda has an interest in acting?  Which leads into the PokeWars event, which...wasn't listed anywhere.  Huh.  Anyway, I just like those two.

#1) A Pasio Spectacle - These events tend to be super bare bones, but this one is way too funny to forget.  Like, it's peak comedy for this game, and for that, it's probably my favorite of the solo events that were listed.

LEGENDARY: #3) Pure Hearts and Rainbow Wings - This was so hard to decide on, but I stick with it.  Silver's development is great, and the whole event is just really emotionally satisfying?  Like it's great to see Silver having come this far, and the whole event feels very natural as a progression for him.  Having his care for his friends supercede his desire for power, and having that be what makes Ho-oh recognize him despite all his doubts, is fantastic.

#2) New World Dilemma - I love Cyrus, and I swear to god, the best possible thing they could've done is exactly what they did.  Introduce him to Sophocles so he accidentally makes a friend.  Like, whoever realized that Cyrus was also a shy nerd child once, and therefore would connect instantly with the other shy robotics nerd kid, was a goddamn genius.  This whole event is both emotionally satisfying, and hilarious when you think about it.  It's an absolute crime how badly the Sinnoh Villain Arc dropped the ball here.  I demand something to update this.

#1) Father or Foe - I feel like this is the obvious winner.  Like, there are a lot of good events, but none really hits this hard in terms of examining N's feelings toward the man who raised him, and the struggle between how awful he is and still wanting to have him be a better person.  And having Silver around to parallel that broken family dynamic?  It's so good.  Like, I love Nate's presence, and how emotional he gets over his friend's situation, but there's just something about the added layer of having Nate not understand and insist to N that this is clearly a bad call, and having Silver of all people recognize the struggle and call Nate out that this isn't as clear cut as it seems that just...it hits hard.  All of that culminating in Ghetsis in trouble, and N coming to his rescue, and Ghetsis still being a complete ingrate bastard about it, hammering in that yeah, he is awful and has no desire to change, but you still wanted to see him recognize something good.  It's so strong.  This is the only event that actually left me teary-eyed at one point.  If Lusamine's events had even half this impact, they'd probably be among my favorites too.

BONUS ROUND: I noticed the special costume events weren't listed, and I do like both.  PokeWars is probably over Teatime, but I will admit to being a bit frustrated with the lack of proper resolution.  Still, it's hard carried by how good the character dynamics and developments are.  Hilda's continued development in her love of acting manifesting here, Jasmine getting left behind because of her bulky clothes, Guzma taking on a leadership role for this battle by pushing ahead and how that mirrors Diantha's more guarded approach, everything about Grimsley.  It's so good.

Ideal Formula is really strong.  I like that there's a Team Break member dredging up Team Plasma ideology, and showcasing how N still has his own beliefs, but how they've broken away from what team Plasma used to stand for.  It's good, just not as impactful as the others.

Same with Winter Wishes.  It's good, and I love the presentation of Leon with a flaw, and Nessa having a cute dynamic with Sonia.  But the ultimate resolution doesn't fit well.  Leon deciding "I'll just work even harder to finish early!" is not the proper response, and smacks a bit of being unwilling to say "breaks are important!" and letting him be temporarily vulnerable as a human being.

Give and Take was the contender in the Legendary events.  Sycamore finally confronting Lysandre on his misguided ideals, and out-predicting him to get a decisive win, is exactly what this event needed.  I just don't feel it hits as hard as Silver, despite being really good.
